IMPORTANT NOTICE It is with regret that the Newsletter Committee has had to take the decision that we will no longer be able to deliver to those roads NOT in the Parish of Taverham after the end of 2017.

This has been caused by the increasing cost of paper, thus printing costs, and the reduced number of advertisers. The roads affected are: Ashgrove, Bramble Close, Costessey Road, Foxwood Close, John Gale Court, Judges Gardens, Long Dale, Priorswood, Riverdene Mews, Rook Drive, Suters Drive, The Thicket, Walsingham Drive and Winners Walk.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly but we could not sustain the number of copies printed without losing money. However, please remember that the Newsletter can be accessed online at www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk and we will try to increase the number of copies available at the library and Taverham Village Hall.

Sad news from the club this month, our chairman and very good friend Carole Grothier passed away on September 9th. For seventeen years Carole was the mainstay of the club not only as chairman, she also remembered birthdays, booked the monthly outings and until this year made sure we had speakers for our meetings.

September 19th would have been Carole’s birthday and a party was planned. Sadly Carole didn’t make it but we celebrated her life with tea and birthday cake and remembered and the good times we had shared with her.

It was an honour to have known her.

Last month I reported that improvements to the Village Hall will continue next year and I am glad to announce the next exciting project agreed recently by the committee is the refurbishment of the Bedford Room. This will include redecoration, improvements to the kitchen facility and a new floor covering. As you all know any improvement requires considerable funding and the fundraising committee has welcomed the challenge of raising funds in support of this long overdue project.

The committee also agreed to continue with our ongoing redecoration programme to ensure that the considerable choice of facilities is maintained to the highest standard which is why Taverham Village Hall currently attracts so much interest from potential hirers.

During a recent visit from an engineer to maintain our automatic doors I was amazed to discover that, following analysis of the data the system provides, they have already carried out 249,918 cycles. For a village hall that is certainly a great number of visitors in just two years since installation.

At the time of going to press you may still have a chance to book a table at the Christmas Craft and Gift Fair on Saturday 11th November, 10:30 2:30. Nightingale Infant and Nursery School Is it a bird…? Is it a plane….?

No, it’s the Year Ones at Nightingale Nursery and Infant School!

For our first topic in Year 1 we have been finding out about superheroes. We having been comparing the special powers of superheroes to the amazing senses that we ordinary mortals have. We have used our knowledge of phonics to create sound effects, and we are creating our own superheroes that will feature in their own comic-book adventures.

We are asking the children the very profound question, “What can you do to make the world a better place?” We are confident that our super Year 1s will grow up to be helpful and caring members of our community in the future so look out for these masked superheroes on the streets (and in the skies) of Taverham.

Hello Readers, During September the members enjoyed eating hot dogs, pizza, making Guacamole, starting the junior pool tournament, making and eating their own chicken wraps with salad and sauce’s, designing and flying plane planes in a race and bracelet making.

Members and staff were very sad this month to say good bye to a young member of staff who has been volunteering for 3 year – Karl Brock. He has been a valued team member and will be sadly missed. Thank you for all your hard work and support during your time with us. ☺ The clubs are open as follows; Day Time Years/Age Tuesday 7:00-9:00 8, 9, 10 & 11 Wednesday 6:30-8:30 5, 6, 7 & 8 Friday 7:30-9:30 Age 13-17 For new member the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter.

This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious background.

We then NEED again to follow on with an appeal for YOUR HELP!!! We urgently require adult volunteers to assist in the staffing of the Tuesday and Friday youth club. We are staffed by a small team of volunteers with a professional youth worker to support and guide them. You can volunteer on a basis that suit you. There is no need for experience; just a positive attitude and willingness to be around young people. You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training.

We have a hard working Friends of Nightingale who raise money for the school. They have organised a Quiz and Chips evening on Friday 10th November from 7-10pm in our school hall. The cost will be £7∙50 or £6 (depending on food choice).

Taverham Junior School PTFA We recently held our AGM at the school, an opportunity to reflect on last year, tie up loose ends and make plans for the year ahead. We are thrilled we were able to confirm a donation of £11,500 to towards the cost of a new school minibus. We are even more thrilled to announce that it is already at the school being put to good use for swimming lessons, sports events and trips! This would not have been possible without the support of all the parents at the school, the school staff and the many local businesses who so generously donated their time and money. Thank you all so much. We hope the children enjoyed the events we organised, including the half termly discos, the summer BBQ and, of course, the Run for the Bus! We also produced year group tea towels and organised a quiz and chips night for the parents. This year’s focus is to fund 50% of the cost of all school trips which will benefit all parents and potentially allow the school to organise more trips or activity days for the children.

1st Thorpe Marriott (Wednesday) we are working towards our personal safety badge and the Marriott’s Way Heritage Trail (which recently received funding), so we intend being out and about this coming year along this trail. Guide Rocks, instead of Norfolk Rocks so look out for them, chocolate and pamper evening, walk and chips, Christmas sweet making.

1st Taverham Guides (Friday) Completing Go For It Life Wise, penny walk and chips ending with guides running a session and Christmas Panto.

2nd Taverham Guides (Thursday) Ready Steady Cook session, Norfolk Rocks with 2nd Taverham Guides keep an eye out for these, drama and giant games night, walk around Taverham and apple bobbing.

Senior Section (13 +) (fortnightly Thursdays) The Sweet Shop Challenge, memory game, felt candy bags, armpit fudge, sweet sushi, chubby bunny and movie night.

As you can see, the guides/senior section plans its session at the beginning of each term and what a difference between the units the planning is, exciting and diverse!! In October half term we will be holding a Quiz ‘n Chips to help raise funds for Norjam 2018, which is a large week long and we will be bag packing during this term, so look out for us and come and have a chat about guides.

We always welcome new adults to help at units, but currently urgently need adults to re-open a Rainbow unit, as we currently have in excess of 50 (5+) girls on our waiting lists. BEAVERS: So far this term we have made the most of the evenings before the clocks go back, getting the Beavers outside as much as possible.

As leaders it is lovely to see the joy and excitement they experience whilst working on traditional skills such as building dens, campfires, and toasting marshmallows!

We have been also learning about keeping healthy and how our bodies respond to exercise.

We joined other Beavers from Northern Norwich District on a weekend trip to Holt Country Park and participated in bug hunts, orienteering, wildlife craft activities and a shelter building competition- winning the prize for the most watertight shelter! Some super observant Beavers even spotted some newts! These events are so much fun, superbly organised and open the eyes of Beaver Scouts to the greater membership of the movement beyond their immediate neighbourhood.

www.taverham-wi.co.uk September was a busy month starting with our regular monthly meeting with Rachel Duffield entertaining us in style with songs from the 40’s with many of us singing along to the favourites of our parent’s generation. Rachel explained how during the war popular songs were either expressions of sentiment for absent loved ones or cheering jazzy numbers to raise the spirits and patriotism.

A small group of us had a very pleasant evening visiting Humbleyard Vineyard near Mulbarton. We were taken to the vines by trailer sitting on hay bales and it was explained to us the differing grapes and how it was important to pick them when the sugar or acidity was at the correct balance for the type of wine. It was a rare sunny evening and just perfect to sample sparkling wines el fresco.

Later we were treated to some delicious canapé’s and further tastings of quality English wines.

On Wednesday, 15th November, 7:30pm, Taverham Village Hall, Robert Little, will present, “The Sewell Barn Theatre and it’s Resident company”. Tickets are £2∙50, on the door and there will be our usual raffle and refreshments at very reasonable prices.

Large numbers attended in September when Barbara Miller presented a very interesting, gruesome and, at times, amusing talk as we were taken through the story of the medical profession with a glimpse into ancient history using apothecary methods of healing through to more recent times of surgery. We discovered why specialist surgeons are known as MR and our GP’s doctors, hospitals were designed for the poor, often funded by philanthropists whilst the more affluent were treated at home.

I am confident many were surprised by the number of influential and talented practitioners who resided in Norfolk. A short history of the old Norfolk and Norwich hospital on St Stephens Road founded in 1771 rounded off the very informative evening.

I may be whetting your appetite for more information but it would take the entire Newsletter, the best thing is to attend our evenings to learn and appreciate how we have progressed and developed over the years.

I will provide a brief report of our AGM next month.

At the end of the month we met with Horsford and Old Costessey WIs for a Group meeting. The speaker was a representative from the charity ‘Pets as Therapy’ which was founded in 1983 by Lesley Scott-Ordish to use pets to enhance health and wellbeing in the community. This was followed by our own Sophie Thomson entertaining us by playing the Ukulele and informing us of the history of the instrument.

Next meetings are: 10th November. Annual Meeting 11th December: 2 + 1 A Trio – Songs from the Shows We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7:30pm till approx. 9:30pm in The Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane and we meet regularly for lunch at Wensum Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week.

I’m sure I don’t need to take you through the rags to riches story of every young girl’s dream of meeting her prince and living happily ever after. Taverham Players promise to deliver a traditional and loved pantomime story buckets full of fun. Be ready to cheer the good and boo the bad as we twist and turn from traditional to modern ensuring every age of our audience has a great time.

CINDERELLA has been written and directed for us by Nathan Harrod (our Mr Pinky in Hairspray and Bob in 9 to 5). This is a first at Taverham for him and he’s made sure we’ve all had a great time. Thank you Nathan!

Apart from manning the football car park to boost our welfare fund we have been quiet this month although a small group of members are already planning the roster for “Santa’s sleigh” and as I mentioned in last month’s newsletter we always appreciate any help offered by members of our community. It is probably a good time to highlight some of our most recent donations, which have been made through the generous support of many in our area of activity.

As you know we try to help local organizations, especially when they fall under one of the groups defined in our trust mandate. However, there are often occasions when something dreadful is happening not on our doorstep, but thousands of miles away and I would like to think that the famine in East Africa is a case that you would agree we should support and we have done that with a donation through our international organisation.

The monies raised from our football car park have been shared with three groups: the Hamlet Centre which supports children and adults with disabilities and complex health needs and with our and others help they no longer feel alone.

Musical Keys which provides a service to people of all ages with disabilities. Their programme of music, movement and art based activities help participants learn new skills and build confidence. Nelson’s Journey supports children up to their 18th birthday who have experienced the death of a significant person. The aim is to bring a smile back to their faces.

Ringland Church: We have liaised with Rev Paul Seabrook on several occasions and offered help when we can as there is some restoration work needed on this lovely little church in our neighbouring parish.

N.N.U.H. Only a small donation but we were pleased to provide some more slippers for those patients who are admitted without all their essentials at hand, particularly the elderly.

So once again it is no surprise that on behalf of your local Lions club I have to thank everyone who has generously supported us for the past thirty years.

TAVERHAM FAYRE NEWS

At a recent committee meeting we discussed at length the pros and cons of our Hawaiian themed July Fayre.

Most feedback received was extremely positive greatly aided by such fine weather and the colourful displays created by stallholders. The few negatives can be easily addressed for next year in particular the opening times. Plus most agreed avoiding the Lord Mayors Procession encourages visitors to enjoy our event without distraction.

As a result the 2018 Taverham Fayre will be on the 30th June, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. The earlier closing should appeal to most and although the date appears early it is only how the Saturday falls taking it back by one day into June.

Our theme for next year will be announced at the AGM being held on Thursday 9th November, 7:30pm at Taverham Village Hall. This will be followed by a stallholders meeting when your committee will be looking forward to receiving your comments as this is your opportunity to help us to create an even better Fayre next year.

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB This month I am showing you a breakfast recipe you will want to prepare over and over again!

Blueberry pancakes with golden syrup (Serves 1) Ingredients 50g Self raising flour, ½ tspn Baking Powder, 1 egg, 10-12 Blueberries, 60-80ml Semi skimmed milk, 15ml Vegetable oil for frying and 15ml Golden Syrup Method 1.

Sieve the flour and baking powder into a medium sized bowl.

2.

Whisk the egg with a wooden spoon and put into the same bowl.

3.

Pour 60ml of the milk into the bowl and mix the ingredients together with a fork.

4.

Mix until a dropping consistency. (i.e. hold the spoon horizontally above the bowl and the mixture will drop off the spoon rather than pour in a stream) Add more milk if necessary.

5.

Put the oil into a large frying pan and heat on maximum heat for 30 seconds.

6.

With a small ladle place 1/3 of the mixture into a circle at one side of the frying pan.

7.

Then repeat with the second 1/3 and then the remaining mixture.

8.

The mixture will bubble just before the pancakes turn golden brown on the base and they are ready to turn over.

9.

Leave for 30-45 seconds to brown on their second side.

10.

Stack on your serving plate and place your blueberries on and around your pancakes.

11.

Pour over the pancakes.

The new season began with Handicap Cup matches.

Taverham fielded three teams in the competition. The ‘B’ defeated CEYMS ‘F’ 6-3. New captain Eric Melvin led for the front, and won all his games. The ‘C’ team got past Shelly Telly, but sadly the ‘E’ team went down 4-5 in a close encounter with Wensum. So two teams are through to the next round.

The League season has just started; only a handful of matches so far. In Premier ‘B’ the A Team await their first win, having lost 4-6 at home to Dynamic Rams and securing only a draw with County Council. New signing Steve Barrett won a brace against Dynamic Rams and has fitted in well at the Club. Meanwhile the B Team lost against Electricity, 2-8 in what proved to be an unpleasant evening. However their second match was played in a sporting spirit and a lovely atmosphere. The team won 7-3 against SFC ‘B’ but in all truth the real winner was Table Tennis.

In Division 2 the C Team has started slowly, doing well to draw their opening match but then losing out to a very strong CEYMS side. In Division 3 the E Team put the Handicap Cup behind them and had a tremendous 8-2 win over another CEYMS side. James Austen and Alex Edmonds won their singles.

The D Team also play in Division 2 and I should have more to report next time round.

In the meantime, the Club continues to meet on Friday evenings and coaching for youngsters takes place on at least two of the Fridays under the watchful eye of Chris Cockburn. Further details can be obtained about the Club’s Friday evenings re times etc. from the Secretary, Dennis Calver on 01603 867924.

Mid Norfolk Shooting Ground Some of the East Anglian Air Ambulance team visited Mid Norfolk Shooting Ground for a complimentary clay shoot in September. Knowing what a fantastic job the Air Ambulance does and after the £1000 donation made by the CPSA last month, Steve reached out to offer a shoot to the crew. This was a small gesture for the work that has helped so many people in Norfolk. As you can see (photo on the left), they had a lovely time and said “MASSIVE thank you for having us on Wednesday. Mike and Paddy were excellent teachers and everyone had a fantastic time.”

At the time of writing (early October) the leaders in the Monday Triples are the blocks skipped by Jim Davies and Eric Walton with Steve Medler at the top of the Monday Evening league. Tuesday Morning Triples sees 6 teams on equal points while Wednesday Men’s Triples are headed up by Chris Binns. All the other leagues are now in full swing though some games are still being hit by holiday absences.

The club took part in the MacMillan Coffee morning raising £130. Thanks to all who donated prizes or took part and especially to Wendy and Doreen Berry, cake cooks extraordinaire!!

Now that most (! !) membership renewals have been received and the club is up and running after the more relaxed summer sessions there are one or two points from the AGM worth pointing out for those who didn't attend: The club is pursuing becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation; John Hipperson has been elected as Captain of the Men's A Team and Geoff Durrant now captains the Men's B Team; Membership fees have been increased to £60 with reduced fees for over 80s and juniors; Guests may play twice for £5 per game but then should take up full membership, the only exception is the Sunday Village League where all nonmembers pay £5 per game; A cash prize has now been introduced for the winners and runners up of this league; Players to be reminded that the correct dress code should be worn on all occasions...namely a Roundwood Club Shirt or plain white shirt and grey trousers (not jeans, chinos or cargo pants!); Finally a reminder that bowls shoes should not be worn outside the club and mobile phones should be switched off.

Well, where has the time gone? The one thing about playing in the band is that the concert schedule does come round quickly. Summer was a busy period but it’s now a distant memory as we march into winter. The Band, is now completing its autumn concerts, and rehearsing for the Christmas shows. So it’s not just the shops that start early!

It doesn’t seem five minutes since the Christmas music folders came out last year!

The percussion section has to find the sleigh bells again and Nick has to decide what costume he will wear at the Christmas shows. Taverham Allotments (TALGA) The answer is in the soil

We see many dogs with heart disease in practice and most of these present with a heart murmur. A murmur means that we can hear a “whooshing” sound when we listen to the heart with a stethoscope. Murmurs are caused by turbulent blood flow which usually results either through blood flowing the wrong way or as the result of blood flowing more rapidly.

Some murmurs are present from birth and result from abnormal heart development but the most common presentation is the older dog that comes in with a new murmur. Many of these dogs have valvular heart disease which is the result of ageing changes to the valves causing them to become thickened and nodular so that they no longer create a good seal when the heart contracts.

A recent study (the EPIC trial) has shown that if dogs with valvular heart disease are diagnosed before they go into heart failure but at a time when the heart is starting to enlarge they will live on average 15 months longer before showing signs of heart failure. For this reason echocardiography is recommended for any dog with a heart murmur even if asymptomatic. Performing an “echo” is where ultrasound is used to view the heart and assess any structural changes as well as measuring blood flow across each of the valves. Echocardiography is almost always done on conscious animals with the patient lying on a specially designed table.

My case of the month is Tess an 11 year old Trail Hound. She has mitral valve endocardiosis which is a form of age related valvular heart disease and she presented recently with shortness of breath due to heart failure. With appropriate treatment the condition can often be successfully managed with medication. Symptoms of heart failure include breathlessness, collapse, exercise intolerance, weight loss, swelling to the abdomen and possibly a cough.

Knowing what type of soil you have in your allotment or garden will help you to produce the best crops. There are four basic soil types, sandy, clay, peaty and silt.

We will concentrate on the first, as this is the predominant type for this locality. In this part of the county most soils are based on sandy glacial deposits.

They can be graded from sand/loamy sand/sandy loam/loam, which is a mixture of sand and clay. These sandy soils are found to also contain flint and gravel.

They are inherently infertile and without fertilisers would produce only lowland heath.

Sandy soils do not retain plant nutrients unless there is a reasonable level of organic matter incorporated in the soil profile. The organic matter helps to ‘coat’ the soil particles and acts like a sponge for nutrients and water.

All nutrients will percolate down through the soil until they are out of reach of the plant roots and also some of the nutrients are removed when you harvest the crop. Crops which are deep rooting, like parsnips, can perform very well under these conditions as they can reach down to the leached nutrients. Providing the correct balance of nutrients is essential but the basic rules are; Nitrogen for green leafy plants, Phosphate for roots and Potash for fruits. Phosphate and Potash can be retained longer in the soil than Nitrogen. After the winter rain it is best to assume that all the nitrogen has been leached from the soil and that you will need to provide all the plant requires. The Nitrogen is an essential part of the chlorophyll, so the more chlorophyll you have the bigger and greener the plant will be.

One problem often overlooked is compaction. Digging to the same depth year after year instead of forking over the bottom of the trench can lead to the equivalent of a plough pan. The other major cause is your own boot. A footprint can easily exert a pressure of 250grms/cm2 this inhibits root penetration. Using a couple of lengths of board can help to avoid this problem by spreading your weight over a larger area.

Light sandy soils do not need to be dug in the early autumn. If left until early spring then there is less time for them to slump and lose the air, which is needed for early root development.

We are a club run fortnightly on Thursdays at Drayton Village Hall from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for both widows and widowers. Our October meetings went well and the fish and chips lunch went down a treat. It doesn’t seem possible we are now in November. Doesn’t the time fly it will be Christmas before we know it!

Our November meetings are: 9th – “Oh to be a Farmer’s Boy” – I am really looking forward to this as I was brought up on a farm; 23rd – Singer (Irish Gerry).

For all the widowed ladies and gentlemen out there we understand how hard it’s for you, but the FIT Club is for everyone in the same situation and the club would benefit especially if more gentlemen would join and balance the numbers. It’s easy to understand how a Travel Agent’s courier can catch the ‘travel bug’. And that’s exactly what happened to our October speaker, Sarah Laverty.

After ten years she had been well and truly bitten by the bug and decided that age 29 was not too old to have a Gap Year. Or two. Or, as it turned out, almost six years in all!

The back screen beguiled us with exotic photographs: whales, giant redwoods, cruise ships, the Rocky Mountaineer railroad, Uluru, lava streams, the Aurora Borealis and many more. As you may know, Probus is a retired businessmen’s group, so setting out to infect us with the travel bug seems like a lost cause. And yet….. Sarah told us tales of extremes. Of luxurious locations for the travel company, or travelling fearfully through Honduras in a VW van being stopped by the police five times in an hour and parting with money to recover passports! Staying in a five star hotel, or sleeping by the lava stream atop an active volcano! But Honduras was not all bad news.

Sarah lingered on the idyllic island of Utila, enjoyed the scuba diving, met her future husband and gave birth to her son. Her husband was a man from Kent who had studied at UEA, so when her son was four and they returned to England, Norwich was a natural place to settle. And what to do in Norwich? Why, start your own Travel Company* of course. What else?

So could a room full of retirees be persuaded to escape - explore - experience? Would we be tempted to scuba dive in South America, toast marshmallows on a volcano, throw caution to the wind and explore a world of danger and excitement? This was our October Ladies’ Lunch, so husbands and wives would need to agree on how exciting they wanted their next holiday to be. At our age, we might need to settle for enjoying some of the experiences vicariously. The exotic images and Sarah’s energy and enthusiasm had certainly made that possible.

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, 7:30pm - 10pm. entertainment by top professional organists, an interval with refreshments and a raffle. There is no membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

Tuesday 26th September – David Thomas spent the week preceding his visit working at an organ and keyboard festival in Hemsby so hadn’t had much time to relax and re-charge his batteries, but nevertheless he gave us an evening with something for everybody. He brought along his Roland Atelier organ plus a whole load of visual effects and with his anecdotes of his musical career the evening quickly became a very light-hearted and interesting experience.

David engaged with his audience without any apparent effort especially when ‘there may be trouble ahead’ were the first lyrics that went through our minds when he started off with ‘Let’s Face the Music and Dance’ - this being typical of his relaxed style and sense of humour. More Irving Berlin dance numbers, followed by some jolly cha cha chas and our feet were tapping in no time at all.

The projected image of the keyboard on the big screen was put to good use and gave David the opportunity to show us some of the finer points of how to produce the voicing on modern organs and keyboards and, in particular, how drawbars work, followed with a demonstration of different sounds and styles of the Hammond organ.

The evening finished with a video clip of a group of babies dancing on roller skates in time to David playing The Hustle, followed by David singing a duet with Bing Crosby in a clip from High Society, leaving us in no doubt he is a very clever man and an excellent musician.

Tuesday 28th November will be our final concert of 2017 and we have international to play for us again. He is a favourite with many of our members, playing both modern and theatre styles.

District Councillors’ Report Northern Distributor Road: The opening of the western end of the NDR between Fakenham Road and Cromer Road is nearing completion. The date has not been announced yet but mid-November is looking likely. There is going to be a chance for people to cycle the NDR before the opening later - traffic free cycling for one day only!

Look for details in the EDP. Fly tipping has taken place again this last month. All tipping has been reported to Broadland who have dealt with these issues within 24 hours. Please report tipping to your District Councillor.

Broadly Active (www.broadland.gov.uk/broadlyactive) is a 12 week exercise referral scheme delivered by Broadland D C across the Broadland District and Norwich Clinical Commissioning Group areas. It is available to residents with chronic health problems that could be improved if they undertook more physical activity. Referrals can be made through your surgery, physiotherapist or pharmacy.

Physical activity is proven to offer many health benefits and reduce the effects of many medical conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A Broadly Active Instructor can provide a safe, individually tailored programme of exercise that can be undertaken independently or at one of the sessions provided locally.

These include exercise groups, water based exercise and walking. Residents will get regular support and motivation from the friendly team plus the added benefit of social classes with similar people. At the end of the scheme, the instructor will assess progress and provide recommendations on how to keep up the good work.
