TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Note from the Editor, The Newsletter, a community enterprise, is run entirely by volunteers (over 100) consisting of a small committee, distributors and deliverers and is non-profit making relying solely on advertising revenue. As such all advertisers are contributing to the community.

There is no fixed delivery date so your Newsletter will arrive after it has gone through the following process: taken to distributors by either Eddie Garrett, Tim or Kate Ross, then the distributors take it to the deliverers and the deliverers post it through your letter box. Given that all are volunteers it is unreasonable to expect that all are going to be able to respond immediately and put aside their other commitments solely for the Newsletter so there will be time lapses along the way.

If you have any suggestions to offer, which might improve any aspect of the Newsletter, please get in touch with me.

A key element of developing a Neighbourhood Plan is identifying the important characteristics of Taverham that should inform the future development and conservation of the area. This is called ‘character assessment’ and covers such aspects as land use, including business and leisure, landmarks and views, green and natural features, and the type of buildings and roads. Steering Group members are currently out and about looking at different parts of Taverham, as well as contacting local businesses.

Taverham parish covers an area of 8·7 sq. km, making it one of the largest Broadland parishes in the Greater Norwich Local Plan. It is this size and the large areas of farmland and woodland which mean that, although Taverham has a population over 10,000, the population density is much less than Old Catton, which has a smaller area and population. This is why new development may have a significant impact on Taverham and why it is essential to identify what matters to Taverham residents.

To get the best understanding of what’s good about living in Taverham, what’s important to retain or improve, and how residents feel about new developments, the Steering Group is planning to hold two Neighbourhood Plan ‘community engagement’ events in April. One will be at Taverham Village Hall, the other at Hinks Meadow. More details will be in the April newsletter.

In the meantime, the Steering Group is keen to hear from newsletter readers. You can make a comment in writing and drop it in to the Village Hall Office, marking the envelope TNP Steering Group. I will be posting on the two local Facebook pages, ‘Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton community’ and ‘Thorpe Marriott (Drayton and Taverham) community page’.

To whom it may concern We have recently had two large dog messes on the footpath between Laburnum Avenue and Nightingale Drive. Would the person responsible for allowing their dog to do this please clear it up afterwards? It is your responsibility and gives all other dog owners a very bad name. This pathway is used daily by children and adults and it is very unfair of you to walk off and leave it for people to tread in it.

Be assured that when we find the culprit it will be deposited on their doorstep. Maybe then if they slip or stand in it and carry it indoors they will realise how distasteful it is!

A disgruntled resident of Taverham Dear Editor, I would like to bring to your attention those who are using yellow bags to pick up their dogs’ mess and then using hedges instead of the correct red bins in the Breck Farm Lane area in which to deposit them. It’s time these people became responsible owners and used the provided bins.

March always feels like a month that can’t make up its mind which season it is in. The days are lighter and the sun is starting to appear more and more leading you into a false sense that spring is arriving.

Then just when you put away your winter coat, we get visited by another frost!

Some people have great success with early planting and I think providing you take care in what you plant and also by covering, frost susceptible plants can yield good early crops. I err on the side of caution.

Working full time and not being able to spend as much time as I would like checking on things sometimes leads to unpleasant surprises.

My plot is currently only partially fenced as I don’t mind sharing some of my produce with the wildlife.

It’s all about give and take although as last year there was more taking than giving, I’ll be extending my netting to more of the plot!

We have never had success with peas, which is a bitter disappointment - with the rabbits taking more than their fair share of young plants and other plants seemingly giving up. This year we are going to make a concerted effort to change this around. If we could have half as much luck with peas as we do with beans, I’d be more than happy. It always amazes me how some plants can be overly productive whilst others seem to struggle.

Even though I have varying degrees of success with my growing, I always look forward to allotment trips there is something incredibly satisfying about putting a tiny seed into the earth and (hopefully!) watching it transform into something marvellous  If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham please contact Bernie at a.collingsworth60@btinternet.com you can also reach us through our website www.talga.org or drop into the Parish Council Office.

Hello Readers, We hope you enjoyed half term and are looking forwards to the warmer spring weatherď Š.

During January we talked to the members about what sort of activities they would like; we were given some great ideas and are programming these in during this term. In addition to our usual facilities the members participated in the Disney quiz, making your own warm sponge puddings and ear ring making.

For new member the first session is FREE then ÂŁ1 entry thereafter. This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious background.

We then NEED again to follow on with an appeal for YOUR HELP!!! We urgently require adult volunteers to assist in the staffing of the Tuesday and Friday youth club. We are staffed by a small team of volunteers with a professional youth worker to support and guide them. You can volunteer on a basis that suit you. There is no need for experience; just a positive attitude and willingness to be around young people. You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training.

Social F.I.E.L.D Youth Club Friends Interacting and Enjoying Living Differently lolastaffordconsulting.co.uk Social F.I.E.L.D is a youth club currently based at Taverham Youth Centre. It is for young people aged 10 to 18 on the autistic spectrum or those young people who have social difficulties. Social F.I.E.L.D has been running for a year and a half and was lucky enough to receive funding from BBC Children in Need last October.

We meet every Thursday night, 6:30 pm till 8:00 pm, even in the school holidays with two weeks off over Christmas. The club is free to attend and provides refreshments such as squash or tea and has a tuck shop. We have done many activities including a camping trip, cardboard fort building, tubing, bowling, building water bottle rockets and archery to name but a few.

Bangers, Bubbly and Bingo were the theme for the first meeting of our 60th year.

Our catering committee did a grand job of producing fluffy creamy mashed potatoes, succulent bangers, beans and delicious onion gravy. Opening the meeting with ice cold bubbly, with refills during the evening, meant that by the time we had reached the dessert course of apple crumble with cream we had all lost the January blues. We then had an introduction to Hoy bingo… (don’t ask!!) much confusion and laughter was the result.

At the start of the evening there was a ceremonial unveiling of a table cloth made by a small group of talented members. This table cloth is embroidered with the names of all past presidents and our current members in a creative design to commemorate 60 years of Taverham WI. Those of our members who have been in the WI for 25+ years this year will receive certificates from the Norfolk Federation in recognition of their loyal membership.

Some have already been presented but we shall wait until all have been received before noting them in our report.

Two more events took place during January, our pass bus/walking group took themselves off to the Sainsbury Centre to the Fabergé exhibition and enjoyed a leisurely lunch after being enthralled by the exhibits many on loan from HRM The Queen’s collection at Sandringham.

Later in the month a trip to the Theatre Royal to see Top Hat performed by the Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society……as good as any west end production was the majority opinion.

14th March 1958: An announcement was read out that the Mass Radiography Unit was visiting Norwich and members were encouraged to attend. A letter from Messrs Caley stated that they were unable to conduct any tours of their factory. Visitors from Framlingham WI attended to take part in a quiz. The President expressed her admiration at the exhibition of teamwork there had been to organize the Whist Drive on the previous Saturday which raised £16.1s.8d.towards funds. Plans were made to entertain the over sixties during the summer.

2018 marks a special celebration for two members.

Ian Colman began his interest in Brass Bands at School. In 1978 at the age of 11 he joined Taverham Band as a 3rd Cornet player, progressing to Principal Cornet in 1983. In 1992, at the age of 27, he was appointed Musical Director of the Band and this year he completes 40 years’ service - one of the longest serving members of today’s line-up. He was awarded the MBE for Services to the Community in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours list in 2016, attending Buckingham Palace in January 2017 to collect his award, although sadly the Band was not invited to play on that occasion!

Peter Almond, Solo Horn player, will be 90 years old this year and as a special birthday treat has been asked to select some of the music for the Band’s Spring Concert at Taverham Village Hall. Peter has had a long career in music which he commenced in his teens as relief trumpet player at the Norwich Hippodrome Theatre before joining the RAF Band at Cranwell in 1946. Thereafter he played professionally with many top musicians including the Joe Loss Orchestra and some of the top brass bands in Britain. He worked at the Hippodrome in Norwich for 10 years until it closed in 1959. This coincided with the opening of the Britannia Pier Theatre, Great Yarmouth, with a summer season lasting 20 weeks, 6 days a week. Peter joined an orchestra supporting such famous names as The Beverley Sisters, Mike & Bernie Winters, Morecambe & Wise, Bob Monkhouse, Des O’ Connor, Ken Dodd, Jimmy Tarbuck, and Bruce Forsyth. He later played in pantomime and circus bands with many other celebrities. After retiring as a professional player in 1984 he worked for several years as Brass teacher at Town Close School in Norwich and joined the Taverham Band in 1974 where his knowledge and experience have been ‘instrumental’ in the development of the Band.

It is appropriate therefore that our Spring Concert should have a strong element of nostalgia as Ian and Peter have chosen a programme of their favourite music from the Band’s wide repertoire developed over many years. Look out for some golden oldies!

Girlguiding in Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton has always thrived and relied on adults volunteering to keep all our units running each week. They all do a fantastic job and I am sure that you will agree with me that your daughter if she attends rainbows, brownies, guides or senior section have a thoroughly fabulous time.

We now need some help in a couple of units, especially one Tuesday brownie unit in Taverham; otherwise I am afraid it will be closing at Easter.

At a recent committee meeting we agreed a number of dates for 2018. The centre will close for the summer break on the 26th and 28th June. We hope to have outings on the 12th April and the 5th June. We will probably close for the Christmas break on Tuesday 18th December. We would still like to have a volunteer to assist with general kitchen duties on Thursday mornings. If you or you know of someone who may be interested please let us know. Recently we have had a number of people booking trial days and then failing to attend which was disappointing.

We still have a few places vacant on Tuesdays.

Our Taverham group received some lovely thanks from Arthritis UK whose hospital stall we support regularly and also local care homes. So we are grateful for all donations of wool. We need red for the curtain of poppies for the cathedral but all colours for rainbow jerseys, hats etc. Dull colours also welcome; grey, brown, black get used for making donkeys and hedgehogs to sell for sanctuaries or for seamen's neck warmers. We also have ingenious ways of using bits, however small!

We meet at Hink's Meadow Hall on the 2nd & 4th Wednesdays of the month from 1:30 – 3:30pm.

January saw the Scout Group AGM which reported a high level of membership, sadly still a waiting list and the premises and grounds in excellent condition. The Group is still seeking more adult support with the sections ranging from Beaver Scouts to Scouts covering the 6 – 14 age range. We said farewell and thanks to Jon and Enid Stanbrook-Evans who have retired from the Group Committee after serving for more than 30 years. They joined when son Daniel became the first Beaver Scout at Taverham….and he has now reached 40!

Another change is that after 15 years as Chairman, I have ‘retired’ from the role and handed over to Daniel Fordham. I don’t escape that easily as I remain a member of the Group Committee. I join with the rest of the Group in wishing Daniel every success in the role. The evening rounded off with presentations from all the sections of the activities carried out in 2017 including camps, visits from the Police and Fire Service (planned!), crafts, first aid and cooking. If any adults are interested in volunteering to support and help our local youngsters, please get in touch.

TAVERHAM and DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Hallelujah!!! After months of either describing our fall in membership numbers or appealing to readers to consider joining the Taverham Lions Club we have a new member. Yes, Sue Marshall has joined the club, sponsored by our sole remaining charter member Nigel Howes and at January’s meeting Sue was “badged up” by our current president Malcolm Neal.

I’m sure that Sue will enjoy her membership and be a great asset to the club, actually she will be referred to as Susan as we already have Nigel’s better half Sue as a member …………we certainly don’t want any confusion!!

Our first involvement of the year is not actually money raising for the club but assisting the Norfolk & Norwich Association for the Blind. The NNAB is holding a quiz and chips night at Hinks Meadow Hall on Friday 9th March commencing at 18:30 in aid of funds and 7 Lion’s Club members are helping them with the organisation. Now this is brilliant as in the past we have done a litter pick along Marriott’s Way, carol singing at several of our local nursing homes and organised “shoe box” collections for Romanian orphans. It’s great to be able to raise money for deserving causes but another of our key goals is providing service to the community.

The bowls carpet will be turned over and fitted with a new underlay. This will extend the life of the carpet considerably at a cost of nearly £13K. The work will take place from Monday 14th until Friday 18th May and obviously the rinks will be unavailable during this time. However, on Sunday 20th May from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm the club will be open for members to try out the new surface at no cost. The owners of Roundwood have kindly offered to supply free tea and coffee during this time to support the event.

Finally a date for the diary ....Wednesday 4th April at 7:00 pm when a Q and A Session will be held for all members to raise any concerns they may have or offer any suggestions to the committee. (Careful.....!!)

NEW TAVERHAM PLAYERS Our House the Madness Musical

BEAUTIFUL BONNIE, a gorgeous Doberman we have had the pleasure of looking after at Taverham Vets, is helping us to raise awareness of a condition called GDV - Gastric Dilation and Vulvolus.

As a Doberman (a deep chested, large breed) Bonnie is at an increased risk of developing GDV, to prevent this Bonnie's owners decided to have a 'gastropexy' performed laparoscopically (keyhole) at the same time Bonnie was spayed. This procedure has removed the risk of Bonnie suffering from a life threatening GDV in the future.

‘Gastric Dilation and Volvulus (GDV)’ is a rapidly progressive and life threatening condition in dogs. It is characterised as a swelling and twisting of the stomach due to a sudden accumulation of gas, fluid and digested food which cannot be expelled. As pressure increases inside the stomach it has several severe consequences and can be fatal.

Is my dog at risk? Several studies have been published that have evaluated risk factors and causes for gastric dilatation and volvulus in dogs. It is known that there are associations with: Deep chested breeds, Feeding a single large meal once daily, Previously having their spleen removed (Splenectomy), Age: Older dogs are believed to be more prone and Genetics: Dogs which are related to other dogs that have had the condition.

The most common breeds at risk: Great Dane, Weimaraner, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman, German Shepherd, Standard Poodle, Dogue de Bordeaux, Irish Setter, Akita, St Bernard, Irish Wolfhound and Rottweiler.

How can I prevent Gastric Dilation and Volvulus? An elective gastropexy can be performed on high risk breeds in a non-emergency setting to prevent dogs suffering from a life threatening GDV in the future. A gastropexy is a surgical procedure in which the stomach is permanently attached to the muscle wall of the abdomen. The procedure can be performed at the time of neutering with the assistance of minimally invasive keyhole surgery equipment. It is advised that if you own a breed at risk to discuss the procedure with your veterinarian at your pre-neuter health check.

Costessey Road Taverham (by St Edmund’s church) was flooded for about 8 days. There was a ‘road closed’ sign but cars still tried to go through. Stuart Clancy and Claudette Bannock spent several hours trying to stop cars going through. Lorries and Heavy goods vehicles were going over the bridge. There is a 7·5 ton restriction on the bridge. If these lorries keep going over the bridge the road will have to be closed for repairs.

The story then follows the two paths that Joe’s life could take over a period of seven years and the ultimate choice that he has to make.

ZHINENG QIGONG

Free Introduction and Practice Session I would like to invite everyone to a free introductory talk and short practice session on Monday 12th March from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. at Taverham Village Hall.

Zhineng Qigong (which means the study of working with energy) consists of a series of gentle movements of the body synchronised with meditation and visualisation which opens up internal blockages, improving health, reducing stress and developing the immune system.

This is the first Qigong practice based on a fully developed scientific theory and was created by Dr Pang Ming for use at the world’s largest medicine less hospital called the Huaxia Centre. With a fulltime staff of over 600 doctors and instructors the hospital had a 97% success rate with regard to treating many different illnesses without the use of any Western medicine.

Although relatively unknown in the U.|K. Zhineng Qigong is practiced by over 10 million people worldwide. Instructor training courses for Westerners have been recently available and I consider myself both fortunate and privileged to have been able to complete the intensive three months training course in China in 2016 run by the doctors and instructors that worked at the Huaxia Centre.

A five week course will follow on from the free session for those interested in learning a full practice and details will be given on the 12th March. There will also be a one day workshop held on Saturday 24th March for those who would like to learn Level 1 but are unavailable during the day. Fish in Papillote (serves 1) Ingredients: 1 fish fillet Olive oil for greasing 1 med tomato (sliced) ½ lemon sliced ½ teaspoon dill/mixed herbs Black pepper (ground) Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/Gas 6 2. Cut out a piece of Greaseproof paper 30x40 cm.

3. Lightly grease the paper 4. Place half the tomato slices in the middle of the paper and place the fish on top.

5. Then place the rest of the tomato slices and the lemon slices.

6. Sprinkle on the dill/mixed herbs and pepper.

7. Fold up the paper to enclose the fish. Crimp the edges for a tight seal.

8. Place on a baking tray and bake for 15 minutes 9. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

The FIT Club is run fortnightly on Thursdays at Drayton Village Hall from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. for both widows and widowers. If you are lonely then please come along for a friendly chat and refreshments. Try your luck with our raffle and enjoy the entertainment, talks and day trips out.

I am very pleased to say that since September we have had several new members join the club and as word gets back to me it’s nice to know that most of them are really glad they came. I know it’s not for everybody but it’s very satisfying to know most are enjoying themselves amongst people sharing the same situation. I am so pleased to think they are taking that first step on their own and hope that members will make new friends and continue coming and be happy, that is why I get such pleasure from doing my job.

I cannot believe we are already in the third month of the year – just where does the time go?

Our March meetings are: 1st – Lunch at the Red Lion then Hoy and Bingo; 15th – Ruth Smith (the day I was a raindrop); 29th – Pat James (Singer).

This month we were the privileged audience of a beautifully honed performancecum-presentation by Liz Scott about life at Blickling Hall in the 1930s.

Herself a long-term volunteer at Blickling, she appeared in the persona of one of the scullery maids at that time, complete with authentic costume and gawky mannerisms. The accent she assumed was an intriguing blend of Norfolk with a touch of London (possibly inspired by the late Flo Wadlow who was Blickling’s last cook), and the manner she affected combined the knowingness of an insider, the awe of a lowly servant for her “betters”, and a sort of bold brassiness in her confidential asides to us as her supposedly upper-class audience.

Having thus won us over, she kept this persona while informing and entertaining us for a solid 55 minutes (without a single note and aided only by a view of Blickling Hall’s frontage) with a vivid account of life there. We heard of the doings and quirks of the huge variety of both great and lowly characters who lived and visited, and of the daily routines of its hard-worked staff.

It was all vastly entertaining – Liz is a fine actress and impressively in command of her subject. I’m sure her time with us will have prompted several first or return visits to that lovely spot near Aylsham. Many thanks!

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

WVBS It’s that day of the year when rarity status goes out of the window and every bird has even status. Each bird counts and we want them all by the end of the day. This is the day of the Annual Bird Race (or Bird Count) held on the first Sunday of the year by Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society. It’s a fun event but a serious census of birds in the Wensum Valley at the same time.

Teams of up to four chase around the area collecting as many species as they can between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, then all meet up at HQ for a comparison of results. It is highly competitive also a good day out. This year 9 teams took part and a total of 92 species of birds were seen by at least one of them. The winning team scored 81 species an astonishingly high count and four of us had the same total – 65. Obviously we were the mere mortals of the competition. Very entertaining accounts of their day have been provided for our Members’ Newsletter. Sadly they are much too long to reproduce here but suffice it to say that everyone had a great time.

Before Christmas a similarly great time was had by a large gathering of members for our Christmas social event. There was a splendid spread, plus quizzes and a raffle. Our ever-hardworking Secretary, Lin, co-ordinated both events, for which we are as ever grateful.

Future events: meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, at 7:30pm. All are welcome. (There is a £2 for non-members.)

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10pm. There is no extra membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

Tuesday 30th January Our AGM was conducted quickly and efficiently: we congratulated ourselves on another successful year from both entertainment and financial angles, voted the committee in again en-bloc and then got on with an evening of music by Trevor Flunder on the Lowrey Rialto Organ coupled up to external speakers - more than powerful enough to fill the hall with sound.

Throughout the evening Trevor put the Lowrey through its paces, using the organ flutes and stops, the orchestral voices, several different piano voices, big band voicing and, of course, making good use of the on-board rhythms.

His programme started with the ‘Lowrey Fanfare’ and included several ballads, some lovely easy listening organ style arrangements, country styles, Ski Sunday, The Circle of Life (from The Lion King) and a medley of Frank Sinatra favourite. He finished with a selection of Elvis ballads and rock ‘n’ roll tunes, then with an encore of Glenn Miller up-tempo swing numbers the evening rounded off with a flourish.

Tuesday 27th March - John Cooper This will be John’s first visit to our club; he has been touring on the organ circuit and playing at festivals with the new Yamaha Stagea ELS-02c. John prides himself on making the organ sound like a full orchestra, big band or traditional organ and has put together a concert that he feels has something for everyone from modern day to past classics.

TRINITY CHURCH CENTRE THORPE MARRIOTT

Our first meeting of the New Year saw the return of Simon White from Peter Beales Roses. It was a wet and windy evening but we were soon transported to the warmth of the month of May to see the beautiful displays of the Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court, which is slightly smaller than Chelsea. Both grounds were filled with acres of colour from individual arrangements to large displays to cottage gardens. Simon was very proud of the large, tall exhibit of roses which he helped to design and which won a Gold Medal – one of many. One tip he gave us if we wished to visit the shows was to take our own refreshments as they were rather pricey to buy on site.

We have no guest speaker this month as it is our AGM on March 6th and once the business is over we will have a quiz.

On April 3rd we will be holding our Spring Show and our guest speaker will be Andrew Broggan telling us about Henstead Exotic Garden.

Visitors and new members will be very welcome to join us.

We have a varied programme booked for future meetings. Any queries please phone me.

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB The Club will be welcoming another newcomer to the flower arranging world when Kath Doggett and her demonstration ' This Time of Year ' comes to Drayton this month. It is always very refreshing to welcome a new face and we look forward to her 'dem ' The AGM occupies some of the evening on April 17th but the business side is briskly dealt with and then we will enjoy a presentation by Ruth Smith ' Life Modelling - The Bare Facts ' I imagine there will be much laughter and some surprising facts and figures uncovered. Do not forget to start putting your teams together for the Quiz Fish and Chips night on Saturday April 21st at 6.30pm. Further details will follow.

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB At present the ‘A’ team are sixth in Premier Division ‘B’: a 5-5 draw against Dynamic Rams and a 7-3 victory over NCC ‘A’ has reinforced their mid table position. Steve Barrett continues to be the player to watch but Wayne Lubbock has shown glimpses of getting back to form.

Meanwhile the ‘B’ team are fifth in Division 1. They enjoyed an easy 7-3 victory over a two man Originals team, lost narrowly to St Faiths ‘B’ 4-6 and drew 5-5 with Electricity where the Chairman, playing a rare game for them, won a brace. Danny Atkins continues to be the success story in terms of averages but Jack Harrowing is now winning a few to support Eric Melvin’s team.

In Division 2 the Club has two teams the ‘C’ and the ‘D’. The former are doing very well, and lie third at this moment. They had a magnificent victory over leaders CEYMS ‘F’, each player contributing to the outcome.

James Ashworth leads from the front and is having a very good season, and Trevor Johnson reminds us from time to time that he can still do it, turn in a special performance and surprise the opposition. For the ‘D’ team things are always going to be difficult this season. They are five points off the relegation zone but have played two more matches than their main rivals for the drop. Matches against Ex Choristers and the UEA will be significant. However in their first two matches since Christmas they gained only a point but then had a marvellous win over Wensum ‘I’. Non-playing captain Dennis Calver put on his thinking cap, swapped the doubles partners and Taverham won both rubbers, leaving it to Mick Littleboy to seal the match.

The ‘E’ play in Division 3 and are second, following a draw with UEA, an 8-2 victory over Fairfield and a tremendous win against CEYMS ‘F’. Sadly Lewis Ross broke his ankle playing football and this has lessened the firepower of the squad. A lot of responsibility will now fall on the young shoulders of James Austen and Alex Edmonds. We all hope they can do it and gain promotion.

The Norfolk schools Tournament held on 27th January saw James and Alex in action in the Under 16’s and Under 19’s respectively. Both were in tough groups but they played well on the day against some very highly skilled opposition and gave a good account of themselves both on and off the table. Lewis hobbled in on crutches to give his support. And last but not least a word of special thanks to Dennis and Margaret Calver for running the event, keeping competitors to schedule – no mean feat in itself. Thanks too to Peter Austen for umpiring umpteen matches.

In the Handicap Cup, both the ‘B’ and the ‘C’ teams went out in the quarter finals. However in the ‘C’ team match against Wensum, Janet Kelly had a notable success over a former Taverham player, Mike Goffin, 21-18 in the third. Sadly therefore the village will not have a representative in the later stages of the competition as both Taverham and the holders, Foxwood, have been knocked out.
