After a long, painful and hard-fought battle with cancer Sandy, former Chair of Taverham Village Hall Committee, very sadly lost her fight in January.

Sandy worked for several years at Hellesdon Hospital. During this time she was also an active member of the Taverham Village Hall Committee as the first Treasurer. She later became vicechair and then chair.

A formidable ally to the Village Hall, she wanted the best so with the little funding available she resurrected the Fund Raising Committee and worked relentlessly to achieve the high standards we all now enjoy. Her projects from a Horse Racing Night to an Auction of Promises via various other fund raising ideas raised and continue to raise considerable amounts which have benefitted the Village Hall.

Her activities included everything from Bingo calling, to weekend fundraising events and organising quizzes. Whenever painting or similar maintenance work needed doing, Sandy, along with husband John, was always in the thick of it.

In Sandy’s “spare time” she would still be very active in helping the community she loved so dearly. She was such an enthusiastic person that after retiring from work she volunteered her time at the local cancer charity shop.

We have all lost a dear and lovely friend – a real unsung hero! Our sincere condolences go to John and all her family.

We want to give you lots of warning, Please come and join us at our coffee morning.

Similarly should you feel you have the drive and enthusiasm to Chair the committee we would certainly like to discuss how we can build on our past success and develop for the future together.

We hope you are enjoying spring and looking forwards to the coming summer.

During January we consulted with the members to find out what activities they would like to do this term.

Unfortunately we were closed for one week due to staff health but then enjoyed a Chinese themed night with noodles, prawn crackers, duck or vegetable spring rolls and fortune cookies. Then a quiz, word search, zodiac info and chop sticks game.

We then NEED again to follow on with an appeal for YOUR HELP!!! We urgently require adult volunteers to assist in the staffing of the Tuesday youth club. We are staffed by a small team of volunteers with a professional youth worker to support and guide them.

You can volunteer on a basis that suits you. There is no need for experience; just a positive attitude and willingness to be around young people. You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training.

Check the Village Hall listing page for the clubs opening times. New members are always welcome.

Please note that the Friday club is temporarily closed while the usual lead worker is on maternity leave. The Tuesday and Wednesday clubs will be open as usual.

Many will have seen our notice informing you of our Annual General Meeting on the 16th March and this is your opportunity to voice any opinions regarding the future management of the Hall or more importantly, as there are currently spaces available, you may wish to take a more active position by joining the management committee at such an interesting time in the progress and development of the Hall and its excellent facilities. Thank you to all who supported the defibrillator training in January. The clear instructions and hands on approach provided by Andrew Barlow, Community Collaboration Manager for the East of England Ambulance Service, will certainly give us the confidence to use the equipment should the need arise.

One of the activities that we arrange for the members is informative talks. A recent talk was given by Heath who is one of Broadland District Councils Handyperson team.

The Handyperson Service carries out small household adaptations and repairs for persons over 65yrs old. There is a modest labour charge of £15 per hour, if person is not receiving certain benefits. The householder pays for or supplies the material needed. The handyperson is trained to give support and advice as he has links to many other services. To contact the Handyperson Service phone 01603 430518 Another activity arranged for our members is an Extend session. Extend is exercise carried out whilst sitting.

NIGHTINGALE INFANT AND NURSERY SCHOOL

SKYDIVE FOR HALLSWOOD I am Hannah Yallop, a 16 year old Taverham resident. I volunteer at Hallswood Animal Sanctuary in Stratton Strawless.

On 8th April, I will be doing a Skydive to raise some money so Hallswood can build a bigger enclosure for their rescued rabbits. BRENDA CLARKE It is with great sadness that I’m writing to inform you that Mrs Clarke is retiring at the end of this term. Mrs Clarke is our longest serving member of staff who over the last 20+ years has helped create and maintain the wonderful ethos of Nightingale School. She has taught a huge number of children throughout the years and provided excellent support to many of our families and staff members.

As a school we would like to wish her well and hope that she has lots of exciting things planned to fill her days with, perhaps, a holiday during term time being top of her list!

We will have a special farewell assembly on Wednesday 29th March at 13:30 to celebrate Mrs Clarke’s achievements. All pupils, parents and members of our community are welcome to come and celebrate with Mrs Clarke and enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of tea!

freestyle yoga and pilates

This class integrates basic Yoga and Pilates for complete fitness, concentrating on core strength and flexibility.

Both Yoga and Pilates are recommended by the medical profession for the relief of chronic back pain due to spinal stiffness and weak abdominal muscles but anyone with more serious problems should always consult with their physician before embarking on any exercise regime.

There is no aerobic content and relaxing music gives a definite “chill-out” atmosphere to the class.

The class is friendly, non-competitive and everyone is encouraged to work at their own level, with no pressure to work beyond each individual’s own comfortable limits. It is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some exercise experience as the philosophy of the class is that the greatest benefit is obtained by performing basic stretches and abdominal strength work with good technique. Ann Godfrey who instructs the class has over 25 years’ experience and is a qualified Freestyle Yoga and Fitness Pilates Conditioning Instructor who also holds a Level 3 Diploma in Anatomy and Physiology and is always on hand to answer any queries.

Regular weekly drop-in classes run at Taverham Village Hall on Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30a.m. The class costs £6 per session and participants should wear loose comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat for the floor work. Nursery We have been celebrating at Nursery. We celebrated the fact that it was snowing. By the time you read this we may, or may not, have had lots more, but the excitement when it fell during that one morning in early January had to be seen to be believed. All children and staff went out in it to do mark making, catch the snow, dance in it and yes, there was even enough to make a small snowman and have a snowball fight. Sadly it did not last long, but everyone had such a lovely time.

We also celebrated the Chinese New Year and had noodles for snack time, which we tried very hard to pick up with our chopsticks. We practised using chopsticks in our home play corner as well ‘transporting’ numerous paper noodles from one big wok to our little dishes. We had a fantastic dragon parade with our own band supplying the music.

North Norfolk Lifeboats - 200 Years of Gallantry and Sacrifice off Our Coasts Life Governor of the RNLI, Paula Hughes will be delivering a fascinating talk on the history of North Norfolk lifeboats. She will focus on notable rescues and the people involved to illustrate the vital importance of lifeboats to the safety of those at sea which continues to this day.

TUESDAY FRIENDSHIP CLUB We are now settled into a new year and have an interesting programme of speakers and outings to look forward to.

We had our AGM on the 10th January which was an opportunity for anyone to voice any concerns and comments they may have had. To round the afternoon off we played a game of Hoy which is a card game the members enjoy.

Paul Graves, the butcher from Briston, came on the 24th January with a good selection of his meats. He has a farm on which he raises cattle for his shop, he also has a Bakery and General store which serve the villagers with most things they need. He also has a shop in Holt.

He kindly donated two prizes for our raffle, an enjoyable afternoon as always when Paul comes to us.

We meet twice a month in Taverham Village Hall from 2pm to 4pm. We also have outings when anyone is welcome to join us open to non-members, for details contact Carole on 01603 868239.

Double Cropping

Writing this in the wintery dark days at the end of January it is good to be aware that by the time it is published the winter weather should be making way for the promise of spring with the daffodils and other seasonal flower brightening our gardens.

Our January meeting was our winter social and we were treated to some delicious homemade soups and puddings….yummy! Made by our catering team and I understand one or two had help from their husbands….lucky them! Patsy Rose a very talented musician added to the enjoyment and encouraged us to dance off some of the calories.

Our early February visit to see the Norfolk and Norwich Operatic Society’s production of Witches of Eastwick was booked last September and is a great opportunity to meet up with other WIs from around the Norwich area and to enjoy a Saturday in the city together.

In anticipation of our 60th birthday celebration next year we have been compiling a list of all past presidents. We now have all the names but have been unable to establish the Christian names of two. Unlike the more informal ways of addressing each other now we only have their title, initial and surnames. Mrs M.A. Alcock was president 1960-63 and Mrs Ramsey 1966-68 if any readers can help please contact Gill Whitehead who as our archivist will be very pleased to hear from you, 01603 867870.

The amount of land for growing crops is finite so getting the maximum from the available land is the objective. Double cropping and catch crops have been practised by farmers for many years. We can see an example next to the allotments where a catch crop of stubble turnips is grown after a crop of winter barley. This provides food for the sheep which provide much needed manure on the sandy Ringland series soils.

For an allotment holder it is possible to double crop in some circumstances if you get the timing right. The weather can also play its part and a cold wet May/June makes things a little tricky. Raising the second crop as plants in pots will save up to six weeks in the rotation. Examples of the combinations which fit into double cropping are: Peas and Leeks Early peas can be sown first week of February in pots and then hardened off in a cold frame or greenhouse until they have two or three true leaves and then planted into the allotment.

Remember to unravel the coil of roots when planting out. Main crop peas and mangetout can follow on two or three weeks later. Cropping will be over the May- July period and the surplus can be frozen. Meanwhile leeks can be sown in trays on the 1st May and when germinated potted on into individual small pots. A second potting into a slightly larger pot can be done if the leeks start to fill the small pot. The pea plot can be cleared in July-early August and the ground immediately prepared for the leeks. Spread one cup pelleted poultry manure plus one tablespoon of sulphate of potash per square metre. Fork over the ground using the full depth of the fork. Knock the leeks out of their pots and plant, again trying to unravel the coil of roots. Allow 12-15 inches between plants. Water plants regularly until established.

Harvesting is from November until early March.

Other combinations are also possible. Early Potatoes, planted in March and grown with frost protection using cloches, can be followed by sweetcorn. Again the sweetcorn must be raised as plants. Spring cabbage planted in the late autumn can make a good entry for climbing beans in May. Beetroot can be picked and bottled in July to be followed by salad crops and spring onions.

This term all our units will be celebrating Thinking Day in February, this year we will be joining together with all our Division units, Costessey, Old Catton, Horsford and Hellesdon. We come together to celebrate when guiding starting over 100 years ago, when girls asked Lord Baden-Powell if they could join in scouting and his wife Lady Baden Powell became our founder and hence we are still going strong. More and more girls wish to join the guiding movement especially rainbows, which is the youngest of all the sections 30 years old in fact this year.

Although the rainbow section is flourishing with all our units full, we unusually have vacancies in Brownies and Guides who run on a Wednesday at Hinks Meadow Hall. If your daughter is aged 7 - 10 years old and would like to join us, then please do get in touch with me at chrischapmanmail@gmail.com and she could well start in one of these units.

Guides in the District have just registered to attend Norjam 2018, which is a week long camp on Norfolk Showground with up to 5,000 other guides and scouts, it’s a great experience for them. We are going away in March for a weekend residential at Patteson Lodge and hope to camp in the summer.

Brownies in the District are also going on residential this summer, so there is much going on in the District.

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB For the ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ teams little has changed since my last report. The ‘A’ team is 6th in its Division, the ‘B’ lies 6th in theirs and no prizes for guessing that the ‘C’ is in the same position in Division 2. However, the ‘B’ team has seen the welcome return of Eric Melvin to the squad following injury – most welcome for Eric who has missed the sport after twelve weeks ‘out’ and for the team which was down to a minimum base of three players and hoping on some weeks that someone would be available from elsewhere in the Club.

And now to the highlights of the season, the ‘D’ and ‘E’ teams - both play in Division 3 of the Norwich League and at the time of writing the ‘D’ lies second. Although Table Tennis is a team sport their position is in no small measure due to the form of Jack Stubbs. So it was no surprise that when the team defeated UEA ‘D’ 6-4 it was Jack who took a maximum and shared in a Doubles win. Meanwhile the young ‘E’ team lies a very respectable 5th in the Division. Their 5-5 draw with a young Wensum ‘J’ team was a superb match to watch. Georgina Sunter was the Taverham star on the night.

In the Norfolk Schools Tournament held on 28th January Taverham’s Lewis Ross won the Under 13 title and will go forward to represent the County at the National championships. He defeated his opponent James Taylor 11-9 in the fifth; the match could not have been closer. But it was a full week-end for him. The next day Lewis was at Stowmarket in the Eastern Region Juniors helping his Norwich team win their three matches, 8-1, 7-2 and 5-4 in League 2.

Finally, in the Handicap Cup in Norwich the ‘C’ team lost its match in the quarter finals 54. However, in the same competition the ‘B’ did not have to hit a ball in anger because their opponents were not able to field a side and the ‘B’ goes through to the last four.

The Club continues to meet on Friday evenings in the Village Hall.

TAVERHAM BAND

The musical director of the Taverham Brass Band has described his MBE honour from Buckingham Palace as “fantastic”.

Ian Colman has spent 40 years with both the Taverham Brass Band and Taverham Scouts and is currently chairman of Ringland Parish Council.

The 51-year-old was included in the Queen’s birthday honours list last year and was made an MBE for services to the community in Norwich.

He attended the ceremony with his wife Lisa and daughter Emily. Mr Colman said: “It was a fantastic day and quite nerve wracking.

“It was quite an experience to meet all the other recipients. And, of course, Ant and Dec were there and we had a half hour chat with them beforehand.”

The Taverham Brass Band, which Mr Colman joined at the age of 11 and he has been musical director for 25 years, had previously played for the Royal Family and Prince Charles remembered.

The father-of-three said: “I did meet Prince Charles three years ago at a Sandringham Garden Party with the Band and he recalled that particular event. “It was just a fantastic day for my wife Lisa and daughter Emily and to see the palace.”

He added: “I think it was one of the nice things Prince Charles said, was that people have taken the time to recognise what I have done.”

Mr Colman has been the chairman of the Taverham Scouts Group for the last 10 years and was involved as a governor at Drayton Infant School and Taverham High School and is also the treasurer of St Peter’s Church in Ringland.

He said he benefits from the great experiences by being part of so many organisations.

“I have been involved since I was a youngster and I have just carried on,” said Mr Colman. “I have had so much pleasure out of these organisations and it gives me great pleasure to see people enjoying them.

“It is a great experience (the brass band) with the people we meet and the places we go. And I think it is nice to work with youngsters. It is great to work with so many different people.” www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Taverham Band March 2017 Preparations for the Spring Concerts at Taverham Village Hall on 31st March and 1st April are nearing completion, and the Band is looking forward to introducing new repertoire as well as revisiting old favourites. Norfolk County Councillor’s Report

tables in Thorpe Marriott are being assessed in terms of height and serviceability.

Speed Limits and Enforcement: I have advocated and strongly supported the introduction and enforcement of variable 20mph speed limits in and around our schools, but do not support speed cameras. I am also pushing that PCSOs should be responsible for the management and potential enforcement of parking/obstruction issues around our schools.

Bus Routes: During recent months I have had further meetings and dialogue with officials from First Bus and NCCs public transport department about the revised routes of the 28 and 29 bus services which many residents have found has left them with in effect no public bus service. As these services are operated by First on a commercial basis NCC is not in a position to demand First revise these routes. However, at the time of writing First have agreed to review the whole routing structure in Taverham and report back to me. In the meantime I have requested NCC look at other possible options to improve the public transport offering in areas which are currently unserved including a possible subsidized service.

Site Proposals: During the past few months various agents/developers have put forward 5 potential site proposals for inclusion in BDC’s Local Plan in and around Taverham for up to 1800 new homes by 2026. Whilst I am not totally against more housing I most definitely will not support inappropriate large scale development which is detrimental to existing residents and is not accompanied by guaranteed legally binding agreements to deliver improved local services and will certainly NOT support any major housing development proposals within the Wensum valley.

Broadband/Mobile Phone Signals: I have continued to work and put pressure on the Better Broadband for Norfolk contract providers to assist local residents and businesses to obtain better Broadband speeds and mobile phone signals which, in many areas, remain unsatisfactory. If you have a particular problem obtaining satisfactory Broadband speeds please contact me I may well be able to assist.

Summary: 2016 has been a busy year at NCC and has seen many changes although progress has been made towards achieving the delivery of efficient cost effective front line customer focused services, unnecessary and wasteful bureaucracy and process remains an unacceptable cost burden on the organisation.

Stuart Clancy, Taverham County Councillor, 01603 754148, 07837299753, stuartmclancy@hotmail.co.uk NDR: After nearly 30 years the work started which although on target to be completed autumn 2017 has caused some disruption to our area. The construction phase has been challenging as the project has had to meet stringent criteria, which the contractors and NCC have not always got right, resulting in me having on occasions some very robust conversations with the project manager. As I have consistently stated the NDR in its current form will be incomplete and of little or no benefit to our community, therefore I campaign and lobby hard for it to be linked to the A47, this project is known as the Norwich Western Link.

Norwich Western Link: NCC has formed a NWL members working group, which comprises of myself and five other councillors whose divisions are directly affected by the current situation. I have promoted the NWL to become NCCs TOP priority (of three) in terms of new major road transport schemes, currently there are thirteen route options being investigated.

Therefore we are constantly pushing officers to speed up the process.

Adult Social Care: NCC is proposing to invest an additional £25m into adult social care this year, something I support. NCCs ASC service is moving towards locality which means working within Districts which should bring a more responsive customer focused service, cutting the back office and improving front line service delivery.

Parish Partnerships: NCC is continuing with the Parish Partnerships scheme which in essence offers Parish Councils 50% funding for small road improvement/safety schemes, something I have worked on with our Parish Council to the benefit of all road users including the provision of electronic speed warning/indicator signs.

Taverham VC CE Junior School: During the past year I have been helping the Headteacher and Governing Body to deliver a major building replacement programme to replace the rotting old mobile class rooms; this will vastly improve the standard of school accommodation.

Devolution: Whilst 2016 saw the end of the current devolution proposals, I believe that some form of Local Government reorganisation will be back on the agenda as the current form of local government in Norfolk is costly, complex and can lead to duplication and lack of clarity. Whatever is proposed I will work tirelessly to ensure that Taverham is not absorbed into or taken over by Norwich. Working with Norwich is acceptable, but being taken over is totally unacceptable. My first priority is looking after the best interests of our area and its residents in any proposed changes to Local government in our area.

Apprenticeships: During the past year I have been member champion for Apprenticeships at NCC as well as BDC, and am pleased to report Norfolk employers have taken on a record number of Apprentices - BDCs apprentice service recorded the highest growth in numbers anywhere in Norfolk, and achieved an OFSTED "Good" rating.

I am also pleased to report that with the assistance and support of the Chair of Governors at Taverham High School, NCC Apprenticeship Service is now able to present its Apprentice offering and support to students of THS, this gives young people the best possible opportunities and career choice.

Pot Holes, Paths, Road Repairs, and Grit Bins: During the past 12 months I have endeavoured to keep minor local road works and the re-surfacing and repair program for Paths and Footways on track. I am pleased to report that I have secured much needed funding for next year to re-surface the paths on Shakespeare Way and surrounding roads plus part of Baldric Road. NCC is now taking a proactive approach to the filling of Grit Bins prior to the salt being required. Also during the course of next year the speed

NORFOLK KNITTERS & STITCHERS Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers continues to grow. It does not seem that long ago that we welcomed a new member to our Taverham Knit and Natter as our 1000th member. We now have 3000 knitting and stitching to provide all sorts of things for people in need or items sold to raise money for good causes.

A BIG THANK YOU on behalf of all the charities that are supported by your sewing and knitting. Here in Taverham we continue to provide items on a regular basis for the Arthritis UK stall at the N & N and many other local organisations helping those less fortunate as well as The International Aid Trust.

Donations of wool are always welcome as are new members to our Knit and Natter sessions at the Community Café at Hinks Meadow.

Taverham District Councillors’ Report Easter and May Holiday with Tots2Teens

Every School holiday, Broadland District Council run the Tots2Teens programme for children aged 5-16. A diverse range of fun activities are run across the district, from arts and cookery through to technology and sporting activities.

Highlights this Easter and May holiday include Easter crafts and egg hunts, golf, gymnastics, cookery and much more. Activities will be running between Monday 3rd April and Thursday 13th April and also between Tuesday 30th May and Friday 2nd June.

Our case of the month is Archie, a handsome 6 year old Weimaraner who presented last year lame after chasing rabbits. Over the course of several days his back leg above his hock became progressively more and more swollen. With the progressive swelling there was some concern about the possibility of an adder bite however as the amount of bruising and swelling continued to increase we became concerned about a rupture to the one of the muscles or tendons in the back legs.

Referral to a specialist centre was organized and a rupture to the gastrocnemius muscle diagnosed.

Archie then had a major orthopaedic surgery performed called a “pantarsal arthrodesis” which effectively fuses the bones in the tarsus together.

Archie made a good recovery and is now back to his happy self.

Fly problem - Taverham North Your District Councillor (David Willmott) would like to inform readers that he has been in touch with the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) and that the housing of all Poultry presently in place due to the bird flu restrictions, could exacerbate the fly problem and that a close working relationship with the owners of the chicken/egg farm will be maintained at an early stage of the year to try to avoid the fly situation endured last year. The EHO, David Willmott and the chicken farm are all working together.

The Lions Club of Taverham & District, part of Lions International which is 100 years old this year, hold various fundraising activities throughout the year from Quiz ’n Chips nights, race nights, summer BBQ’s with our own professional equipment and many other events to support local schools, clubs and other charitable causes.

All monies raised are used for charitable purposes; nothing being taken out for administration etc. as all our members are volunteers giving their time freely to raise funds. However, it’s not all work and no play as we also hold various social events to keep us amused like darts nights, restaurant trips and brewery and local history tours to name but a few.

In the County fixtures the ladies’ B team continues to top the league with 7 games played and all 7 won. The ladies’ A team had a clean sweep at Woodlands and have moved into 2nd place.

Both teams wish Barbra Davis, the club captain, a speedy recovery from her recent operation.

The men's A team has played 8 matches in the division 3 league and is undefeated. The top rink in the last match was skipped by John Spinks and won 24-9!

Socially March 10th sees another of Roger’s unique bingo sessions..... A fun evening guaranteed!!

VALE PROBUS CLUB - ROYALTY MURDERED AT DRAYTON? Local academic Joe Mason was our speaker. Over many years he has developed a theory which challenges the traditional story of St Edmund that regards him as having been martyred in Suffolk and has led to him being adopted as the Patron Saint of that County. In his presentation he showed how he had drawn on the generally overlooked evidence of place names and landscape features to make sense of sparse written records. The story he revealed was a very convincing account of how the Saxon King probably met his gruesome end right on our doorstep, near the Drayton Beauty Spot!

In 869 AD King Edmund was fighting a campaign against the marauding Vikings who were penetrating via the river system from the Wash and what is now Yarmouth to pillage and destroy villages in their path. Refusing to accept pagan rule as a condition of peace, he chose the land between river and high land at Drayton as the strategic spot for his Saxon forces to block their route up river to the Christian Cathedral at North Elmham. However his position had been betrayed to the Vikings and on 20th November they took him by surprise, killing his chieftains, torturing him to renounce Christianity and beheading him when he refused. The scene of this was called Bloods Dale until recent times.

The survivors then took his body by boat up river, past the smouldering remains of Costessey and Taverham churches (now both St Edmund's) and found a burial place for him in a safer location at Lyng. At this spot are now the ruins of St Edmund’s Chapel, an Ice-age boulder called St Edmund’s Stone, and an area of trees called Kingswood. Coincidence or what?

Meanwhile with winter coming on the Vikings lost interest as their cunning plan (to rule the area using Edward as their puppet) had failed, though ironically when they returned some decades later they did become Christian!

Norfolk has far more churches and other place-names remembering King Edmund than anywhere else, including Suffolk. Joe Mason has carefully mapped their positions - they lie mainly along the routes where the Vikings wreaked their havoc - and suggests they were named in homage to the Saxon hero.

Joe took us through a wealth of detail, and scrupulously weighed the value of each source he used. Agreeing that Edmund was indeed later reburied in Suffolk, few could now sensibly challenge that he is actually a Norfolk Saint, - and what’s more, a Wensum Valley Saint!

TAVERHAM & DRAYTON SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD TEAM Minutes of the Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel Meeting. Wednesday 25th Jan at Drayton Jnr School 5. Advised the meeting about a grant of £500 that had been spoken about at a recent Taverham Parish Council meeting that could be used for Homewatch.

Keith Morgan raised the issue of defective lights on bicycles and motor vehicles.

A member of the public raised concerns over the parking on Windsor Chase, Taverham and the broken street lights at the rear of Tesco in The Square, Drayton.

Mike Lamb also made reference to the broken lights and asked if the panel could send a letter to the owner of the land asking that the lights be repaired. The issue of pot holes in the car park at The Square was also raised.

Cllr Adams spoke about the issues in The Square and asked that if he could be given the land owner’s details then he would look into the matter.

A member of the public raised the issue of vehicles for sale parked at the end of Longdale and Drewray Drive making it difficult for drivers to negotiate the junction safely. PC Hudson advised that the team had already dealt with previous reports and encouraged members of the public to report these vehicles for the team to deal with.

Graham Everett raised the issue of the mobile library and school times.

Katie Holt raised the issue of school parking and made reference to Drayton Infant School and the possibility of using the car park and front of the school as a drop off point. PC Hudson advised that this was already being looked at under the joint project with Broadland District Council.

A member of the public raised concerns over vehicles parking in Ashdown, Taverham.

Katie Holt raised the issue of the problem of dog faeces in the local area. Cllr Foulger advised the meeting that any evidence of dog owners not clearing up should be reported to the council for enforcement.

Katie Holt also raised concerns over the use of Hinks Meadow Car Park in the evening and car owners playing loud music and smoking drugs. Police advised that patrols are carried out in the area and encouraged members of the public to report any antsocial behaviour to the police.

PC Hudson made the meeting aware that the Police had received communication from concerned local residents regarding the recent felling of trees off Marriott’s Way in Taverham. It was highlighted that recent anti-social behaviour had started in this area and there were concerns that it would get worse.

Lamb - Drayton Resident Attendees: - PC 460 Hudson, PCSO 8640 McCue, PC 1636 Mason & 18 members of the public Review of non-priority matters: PC Hudson advised that the team carried out 28 high visibility patrols around local schools giving advice to motorists regarding parking issues. He confirmed a patrol was made at the Junction of Costessey Lane in Drayton but the team were called away to deal with a shoplifter at Asda.

Introduction of PC Mason: PC Mason introduced himself to the meeting as the new Police Engagement Officer for Broadland. PC Mason spoke about his role and advised on subjects of Community Speedwatch, Neighbourhood Watch, Police Specials, Police Cadets and Social Media.

Review of Crime figures: PC Hudson advised there were 110 crimes reported to Police compared to 108 in the same period last year which included: 43 assaults, 7 criminal damages, 8 burglary offences and 3 drug offences It was noted that Police are dealing with more internet based offences relating to young people sending indecent images to each other. The team explained that they continue to educate both pupils and parents around these areas.

A member of the public asked how victims of crime were referred to victim support and this was discussed.

Meeting opened to the public for discussion: Katie Holt raised the issue of speeding motorists in the area. PC Hudson explained the procedure for concerned members of the public to contact the police and the information can be fed to the Community Speedwatch co-ordinator. It was also encouraged that members of the public could join the Speedwatch team and had brought along leaflets to the meeting.

Claudette Bannock raised the issue of HGV's using Sandy Lane and then driving over the bridge which has a weight restriction.

Graham Everrett spoke about engagement between the Police and Drayton Parish Council and the possibility of putting on a local event that could promote items such as Community Speedwatch and Neighbourhood Watch.

Charles Ison made the following points: 1. Reference to the recent engagement meeting that both himself and David Wilson attended between the Police and local Parish Council, held recently in Aylsham. He expressed his appreciation for the meeting and the presentations given by the team and PC Mason.

2. Thanked Inspector Sweeney for putting on the event and looked forward to the next meeting. Mr Ison was disappointed that Taverham Parish Councillors were the only representatives from the local area to attend the meeting. Mr Ison made reference to the high turnout for tonight’s meeting and asked that the minutes and agenda for the meeting could be placed in a local news magazine.

3. Gave an update on Taverham Parish Council and the purchase of the SAM machine and laptop.

4. Raised concerns on a recent article about Community Speed Watch and PC Mason advised the panel that the issue had been addressed. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

Priority Plan: To address issues around anti-social behaviour along Marriott’s Way and the surrounding area where trees have been recently felled.

It was also agreed to continue with patrols at local schools around the issue of parking and to continue to monitor Costessey Lane junction and Carter Road.

To monitor ant-social behaviour and to continue to engage with youths in the area.

The Programme Secretary and Committee have been very busy putting together an exciting programme of demonstrations for the coming year. April sees the Annual General Meeting after which we will be visited by Moaning Martha from the workhouse in the shape of Rachel Duffield. If you have any suggestions for the AGM please speak up or speak to a committee member. It would seem to be inevitable that subscriptions will have to rise, flowers for instance are now much more expensive because so many are imported from the continent.

It is not too late to enter a team for the Quiz and Chips night on March 11th. Cost is £7 per person and everyone is most welcome, it's not restricted to flower arrangers.

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

We meet on the last Tuesday of every month at Drayton Village Hall, 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10pm. There is no membership fee; entrance is £6.

Tuesday 31 January David Last is a classically trained pianist and theatre organist in addition to playing electronic organ and keyboards and is very well known and in demand for playing for sequence and ballroom dancing in Norfolk and around the country.

This was his first concert for our club and I’m surprised we haven’t discovered him before, especially as he lives just down the road in Ipswich. He brought along his Roland organ, let his 10 fingers do the introductions and played through a vast amount and variety of music, despite the first half being slightly shorter because we needed to conduct our AGM before he could get started. It was an evening of contrasts which had us completely hooked shortly very early.

David’s choice of voicing, which was spot on throughout, plus the extra details which he puts into his music really caught the essence of every piece. There were several excellent orchestral arrangements; Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5, Good Old Vienna and Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik plus superb theatre organ style arrangements including novelty pieces such as The Dance of the Honey Bees and Poodle in the Park, using the softer tone colours of the flutes as well as the richer sounds, with plenty of expression of light and shade.

Popular songs from the 70’s and 80’s, The White Horse Inn medley, Lou Reed’s Perfect Day, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore big band style and an excellent medley of Charlie Kuntz style piano all contributed to his varied programme, finishing with an outstanding rendition of Orpheus in the Underworld. However, after such an enjoyable evening we couldn’t let him go without asking for an encore, which produced an orchestral American Trilogy and demands such as ‘you need to get him back here again!’

Tuesday 28 March: David Ingley. David has had considerable experience, playing for dancing and backing cabaret in the clubs. He has been musical director for several variety and dance shows and makes concert appearances at organ societies and festivals all over the country. His choice of music for concert performances includes all musical styles.

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION Not many people would look forward to their retirement knowing that they were about to tackle two acres of a rundown garden. That is what our guest speaker for January’s meeting, Graham Watts, together with his wife Sally, did.

Both had a background of horticultural knowledge and it was their dream. Our talk and slide show was all about ‘then’ and ‘now’ and it took two years to transform their new home and garden with its many features, including a lake and a stream and many sculptures made from natural materials. All this is included as one of the gardens open to the public under the National Open Gardens Scheme; Dale Farm, Dereham. This year it will be open on July 30th, all monies raised go to support cancer charities.

Nothing quite as exciting this month, as our A.G.M. will be held on the 7th March. When all official business is over, two of our members will give short presentations. First, Irene Woods a dahlia specialist, and then Allan Bagnall, known for his extra-large vegetables.

A FREE tea/coffee and cake per person ACT (Aylsham and District Care Trust) is organising a free event at the ACT Centre in Aylsham for people in Broadland. There will be at least 40 organisations providing information, advice, support and care for older people in the community and their family and carers.

Stand holders attending will include: Fire Safety, Home Safety, Legal Issues, Trusted Handyperson, Housing, Care Options, Respite Care, Claiming Benefits, Hearing, Eyesight, Diabetes, Fraud Avoidance/Advice, Arthritis, Chiropody, Counselling, Help with Shopping/Meals, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Support Groups, Befriending, Mobility Aids, Assistive devices...and many more People who use the many services that ACT provides regularly ask about the different options that might be available to them and to have this extensive range of information in one place would be very beneficial.

For those who do not have easy access to the internet it can be challenging to find out what is available. This ‘one stop shop’ will hopefully provide lots of help and information.

This is the first event of its kind in the area.

Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society

Having neglected to write a report over the Christmas holidays, I am reporting on more events than usual this month, and therefore I am not providing much detail. If you would like to know more, look at the Society website – www.wvbs.co.uk – where reports of all of our meetings can be found. We had an exceptionally well-received talk by Dick Newell entitled ‘All about Swifts’, which garnered more enthusiastic discussion and questions than any I can remember. It was packed with information about swifts, their migration and how to attract them to your home. Recent work to track Swift migration using geolocators has produced valuable information about their routes and habits. Much work has been done by Dick’s organisation, Action for Swifts, in developing suitable nest boxes in an effort to stop the decline of these much-loved birds. If you fancy having a go at attracting swifts to your home, you can find information on how to make or purchase the necessary equipment and boxes on the website at actionforswifts.blogspot.com.

Our December indoor meeting is traditionally a social, with food provided by the members. What a spread we put on this year! Then our brains were put to work by four challenging quizzes.

Another tradition is the Winter Bird Count. 9 teams took part, racing to record as many different species of bird as they could between 08:00am and 16:00. My team was happy with a total of 60, but the winning team managed 79! The event ended with tea and cakes at our new indoor meeting venue, Great Witchingham Village Hall. As well as being fun and a sociable occasion, our sightings all contribute to our records of birds in the Valley.
