Dog Lost: Molly was last seen in

SCOUT LEADERS REQUIRED

Drayton Drewray woods on Friday evening 27 March. She is elderly, slightly deaf and in full winter coat. She was wearing a collar and is microchipped. To date there have been no sightings or reports of her. I would be grateful if people could continue to keep a lookout for her and also check their sheds, garages and outbuildings in case she has taken refuge in them. She is a very friendly and happy dog and I am desperate to get her home. A reward is being offered for her safe return or for information leading to her safe return. If you can help please either contact 07776 488367 or Dog Lost on 0844 800 3220 case no: 84736. Thank you. Worried Owner

We are still in need of additional leaders especially for our Cub section meeting on a Tuesday night. Without the offer of additional support we cannot offer Scouting to all the children who want to enjoy the fun. We need adults over the age of 18 and a full DBS check will be undertaken. Full training will be given! Too often adults criticise youngsters when they are seen to be causing trouble. We have over 50 children wanting to enjoy Scouting locally and the only reason they can’t is because we do not have enough adults. Please consider being part of this great organisation which locally is celebrating 50 years! Contact: Ian Colman, 39 The Street, Ringland, Norwich NR8 6AB 01603 868680 or 07931 722186

TAVERHAM MAN WALKS FOR HELP FOR HEROES

HELP!!!!!! Deliverer Required

th

On the 20 September, I will be walking from Kings Lynn to Great Yarmouth to raise money for Help for Heroes. I am 42 years old and live in Taverham. I have Epilepsy, Short Term Memory, Learning Difficulties and Dyslexia, but I am doing this because both my Grandfathers and some of my Uncles served in the Second World War and my Great Grandfathers served in the First World War. Also my step-father was in the Royal Engineers and served in Northern Ireland during the troubles there. I wanted to join The Royal Navy when I was younger, not understanding that my disabilities would prevent this. I want to show my support for the Men and Women in the Armed Forces who put their lives on the line to protect our country, they put themselves at risk in order that we remain safe. This is my way of saying Thank You to them. If you would like to donate please go to: www.justgiving.com/paul-evans72 Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Paul Evans, Taverham

TAVERHAM ‘BACK TO YOUR CHILDHOOD’ FAYRE

taverham village hall www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com

This year’s TAVERHAM FAYRE will take place from 10:30 a.m. onwards on Saturday 4th July, on the Sandy Lane playing field and also inside The Village Hall. The theme of the Fayre will be nostalgic and inclusive to all ages:CHILDREN’s TV AND NURSERY RHYMES. This should give both the stallholders and the general public who attend the Fayre an opportunity to revisit their childhood. Taverham Fayre is an event for the whole community and we aim to provide traditional Fayre fun. Lots of things have been arranged with firm favourites of past years returning, including the birds of prey, bouncy castle, model train rides and go karts to name a few. Come into the halls inside and find craft stalls and sit down for a justly deserved rest in the tea rooms for tea and cake. The smell of the bacon rolls will lure you there we are sure. Outside there will be the usual array of community stalls with the Taverham Scouts and Taverham Lions providing their lovely BBQ’s. We want to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and, of course, the local businesses as without their support we would be unable to put on such a wonderful community event. We look forward to seeing you all on the day to help build on the past achievements that have made this the number one family event of the year. For latest updates: Follow us on twitter @Taverham Fayre or like us on facebookTaverham Fayre 2015

Over the few years that I have been on the Village Hall Committee I have been increasingly amazed at the dedication shown by a small group which is prepared to give up its time and expend a considerable amount of energy with no reward. This group has worked incredibly hard to raise funds for the proposed refurbishment of your Hall including automatic doors. The latest venture was the Indoor Car boot Sale on Saturday 18 April. There were not as many at this as in the past but fund raising still went well. Janet Latchford and Christine Harding ran a stall which raised over £225 and the Refreshments with Stella Newstead, Susan Millar, Jo Swannell and Chris Hall working their magic raised over £52. These added to the sale of tables means over £400 has been added to the coffers. Many thanks too to the brave voters who bought raffle tickets when they came to vote on May 7th. They added another £326 to help with the automatic doors etc. By the time you read this the Plant Sale will have taken place. Yet another example of the dedication of the few! The refurbishment is due to take place in August. It is not proposed to redo the whole Hall but apart from the automatic doors there will be plenty being done to improve the Hall. The cost is going to be considerable but it is important to keep the Hall up to a good standard. Hence the need for all the fundraising that is taking place. We need another elected member and 2 club members, if you are interested and would like details please get in touch with Mikaela on 869316 or at taverhamvillagehall@yahoo.co.uk David Ross (07789673489), Vice Chair, Taverham Village Hall Committee TAVERHAM VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE

Taverham Allotments (TALGA)

Nursery School

It’s an interesting fact that grasses are by far the most important plant nt group for feeding the world but probably have the lowest representation on our allotments. When we think of grasses we think of the perennial grasses that we grow as lawns in our gardens or football pitches. These same grasses are the mainstay for feedi feeding our domestic animals, in particular, cattle and sheep. On the allotment this type of grass is represented by couch grass and perennial ryegrass which allotment owners treat as perennial pernicious weeds that can drive us to distraction. We forget perhapss that also within this group are rice, wheat, barley and oats; crops that have driven the green revolution and without which much of the world’s population would starve. There is, however, one member of the grass family that is represented both as an agricultural cultural crop and as a horticultural crop that we can grow on our plots. That plant is maize; grown as a starchy crop on the farm for feeding animals and on the allotment as sweetcorn, which is a mutant form of maize that produces sugars as well as starch. Maize, and its derivative sweetcorn, is an ancient grass that was imported into Europe from South America at a similar time to potatoes. It is a strange grass in that the female parts that form into corn cobs are produced in leaf axils low down on the pla plant and the male parts that produce the pollen grow at the top of the plant. Maize pollen is quite heavy and falls from the top of the plant onto the sticky female parts below. To encourage good pollination, therefore, it is recommended to grow the plants in a square pattern rather than in long lines to improve the chances of fertilisation. Since maize evolved in a warm part of the world it is temperature sensitive and is usually sown towards the end of April, initially in pots in the greenhouse. It can be sown directly into the ground, but then it is necessary to wait until May or early June when the risk of frost has diminished. Eating sweetcorn cobs coated in butter is one of the things that remind us of the long summer evenings and is part of the joy of owning an allotment. Cliff Hedley

It doesn‛t seem possible that we are now well into the Summer Term. The whole school topic for the term is ‘Norfolk‛ and the children have been very busy with their learning. Year 1 have been having lots of fun learning about growing. They began by labelling parts of a plant and researching how it changes from a seed to a plant, creating new leaves using art and growing beans. A popular story linked well to these activities… Jack and the Beanstalk. As you can see from the photos, year 1 got very creative with their bean growing this year! A competition is running to see whose beanstalk can reach the giant‛s castle first. We take part in school trips throughout the year, but this term every year group takes part in a trip to a local event or attraction. This year, classes will be visiting the Sealife Centre, Gressenhall, Banham Zoo and the Year 2s are very excited to be visiting the Royal Norfolk Show for the first time with the school. Mrs Jackie Loughlin

LITTLE NIGHTINGALES

This term we have been talking about growing and our walls are full of displays of beautiful flowers. We have planted cress seeds and they are growing so quickly. We have talked about sunflowers and how tall they grow, even taller than the children. We are now doing one of the most popular topics at Nursery - Mini Beasts. Spiders, caterpillars, ladybirds and many more creepy crawlies, form part of our craft activities and the children are enjoying going on bug hunts to see what they can find. Can we remind you that we are always on the lookout for items we can use on our craft tables? Unwanted wool, foil, feathers, felt, stickers or anything you may have lying around of which you think we could make use would be gratefully received. Brenda Clarke

The Governors of Nightingale School wish to inform you that Mrs. Loughlin will be retiring at the end of this school year, in July. She has been Headteacher at the school for over 20 years. Through her endeavours over this time many of the children from the village (some of them are now parents themselves) will have happy memories of and, will have benefitted from, her enthusiasm and commitment to their early education. If you would like to send in your best wishes to Mrs Loughlin or even write down some special memories you have of the time you or your children spent at Nightingale First School please do so. If you would like to make a donation for a retirement gift you may wish to do this at the same time. Please send or hand in any messages or donations to the School in an envelope marked for the attention of Mrs Brenda Clarke (Ref: JL). Please ensure they are received at the School by Friday July 10th. If you would like to send a cheque we would ask that you make it payable to Nightingale First School. We are sure so many of you will want to wish Mrs Loughlin a long and happy retirement. Thank you, The Governors of Nightingale First School

TAVERHAM LIBRARY NEWS Young volunteers needed! Taverham Library is looking for young volunteers aged between 13 - 18 to help with this year’s Record Breakers Summer Reading Challenge. Volunteers are needed to help through the summer from July to the beginning of September. They will help with registering children, recommending books, supporting activities and encouraging children to complete the challenge. Applications need to be returned as soon as possible so that we can process all the applications before the end of June. Training for volunteers will take place at the end of June ready for the launch of the challenge on July 11th. For more information and to request an application pack please contact: volunteercontact@norfolk.gov.uk, visit www.norfolk.gov.uk/libraryvolunteers or ask at the library (01603) 260545.

NIGHTINGALE SCHOOL Recently we were invited to City Hall to participate in a ceremony celebrating the school's environmental and eco-work. Nightingale has an active eco-team which look at issues which affect our school environment and relate to global concerns. Some of the things we work hard to do are recycle, save energy, compost and grow our own produce. We have a wormery which we use to help break down the waste from our fruit snack and create good quality compost which in turn helps us to grow fruit, vegetables and herbs in our organic garden beds. The children and staff leading the eco-team were awarded a certificate, to recognise their hard work in this area, which was presented by the Lord Mayor. This month we also received a visit from the Taverham Lions, who presented us with a music trolley and new instruments to support our creativity in music sessions. The members from the Lions were treated to a composition of music, created using a variety of instruments, by the year 1 children. The composition was based on Lake Malawi, close to where our partner school in Africa is located. Joe Davison

Taverham Library is in need of volunteers to help deliver books to people in the community who like to use the library service but are unable to get there due to age, disability or restricted mobility. If you can spare a couple of hours every three weeks please contact Taverham Library on 01603 260545 for more information.

41 guides along with their leaders recently spent a weekend at Kingswood Activity Centre at West Runton. The guides slept in dormitories, some rather cosy but some spacious. Friday night they were put ‘in the spotlight’, an activity similar to karoke. They all joined in and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, the leaders participated as well. Saturday morning after breakfast they had a full day’s activities which were - drama, zip wire, Jacobs cobs ladder, aeroball, indoor initiatives and the evening ng a trail of mystery (cluedo). The guides were catered for by the Centre and on Sunday after a great night’s sleep they had team challenges ( which involved working together , so that everyone on ttheir team achieved their goal). They thoroughly enjoyed this activity and finished off with quad biking. What an amazing experience the guides had, most of the guides had been away before but their favourite activity of the weekend was Jacobs Ladder an activity ivity many had not experienced. Our picture shows how much they enjoyed this activity, when they reached the top! One leader, Libby Smith, who is currently completing her Leadership qualification, has added her report about the weekend "What What a fun, exhausting and exciting weekend!! This past weekend I got to go on my first camp with Girl Guiding, it was a great experience! Girls from Thorpe Marriott and 1st and 2nd Taverham Guides went away together to Kingswood, West Runton. As a leader in training, it was great to see how all the other leaders worked, I got a chance to talk to them in a relaxed environment and see how they do things. Then the fun came, I got to join in the activities with the girls! Being not so keen on heights I skipped the zipwire and Jacob's ladder, but come the chance for aeroball and I was in! It was interesting to join in with the girls at their level and just be a part of what they were doing. Can't wait for the next one!" Drayton, Taverham and Thorpe Girlguiding thrives in Drayto Marriott but without our volunteer leaders and helpers it would not, so if you have a spare hour or so a week, then come and join us. You can contact me on guides@christinechapman.info - it will be worth it! Christine Chapman - Rainbow and Guide Leader

Since the Easter holidays, the Beavers have been learning more about safety, this time focussing on how to cross roads and railways safely. Beavers managed to practice their Green Cross code skills across Sandy Lane under the watchful eyes and encouragement nt of our local PCSOs. Beavers have also been busy planting trees in the Scout grounds. They are working in partnership with the Woodland Trust (who supplied us with 210 trees last year), Taverham Woodland volunteers (lending gloves, gardening tools and helping dig holes) and members of the Group Executive (who have been clearing areas for planting). Some of these trees were potted up in March 2014 and went home with Beavers to be looked after… Amazingly half of them have returnedreturned alive and sprouting! Some ome of these Beavers have since moved on to Cubs so they were invited to join in with the current Beavers to plant their trees. Grateful thanks to all those who have supported this venture so far. On Sunday 26th April, 8 Beavers, 8 Cubs and 1 Young Leader took part in the St George’s Day service in Norwich city, parading with hundreds of other Scouts from the Northern Norwich District. During the service the Beaver Leader (Penny Butler) was presented with her wood badge in front of dignitaries including the Lord Mayor of Norwich. HQ Hire: We currently have time available on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the day to hire the HQ for groups/meetings etc. If you are looking for a regular home in Taverham and would like further details then please get in touch. Ian Colman - Chairman 1ST DRAYTON RAINBOWS Drayton Rainbow unit is still a thriving unit, we have not closed but moved our meetings to a THURSDAY 5.15 – 6.15 PM at Taverham Scout Hut. Why not put your daughter’s name down to join us, we will have spaces in September. Go to girlguiding.org.uk and register egister your daughter, she will have lots of fun. There are also units in Thorpe Marriott and Taverham who run on a Thursday 4 - 5 pm. 11

TAVERHAM BAND

Taverham History Society

www.taverhamband.org Supported by: NatWest, IC Travel, Hi Span/H Young Group, 3-Line Electrical & Ichthyos Ltd It was standing room only at Spixworth Village Hall on 18th April with an audience suitably armed with Union flags and song sheets for a “Last Night of the Proms” concert including all the traditional ingredients of Rule Britannia, Land of Hope and Glory and Jerusalem. The preceding programme included an imaginati imaginative arrangement of Songs of the Great War, culminating in a rendition of the Last Post as a poignant reminder of the immense sacrifices that were made by so many; and a virtuoso trombone solo from Alex Utting whose technique and confidence continues to deve develop apace in two years time he’ll even be eligible to vote! The Band braced itself against a keen wind as it headed into the wilds of Suffolk to perform for cheering crowds at the Earsham Fête; and looking forward to June there is a busy programme including ing a prestigious appearance in the splendid surroundings of the Bishop’s Garden in Norwich in aid of Save the Children. We look forward to seeing many of you hopefully basking in the sunshine. You can catch us at many events over the summer months and we very much look forward to seeing you. TAVERHA TAVERHAM MILLS Spring has sprung on the Mills! As I write the snowdrops have been and gone and the bluebell bluebells are now blooming. April, a month with a reputation for providing all the weather conditions usually experienced during the course of the year in a single day was, in the main largely dry, sunny and pleasantly warm. The Greylag Geese eese on the lake responded to the ‘unseasonal’ conditions by rearing their young early, whilst migrant birdss have arrived in good numbers. Species such as Chiffchaff (easily identifiable by their ‘chiff-chaff’ song), Willow Warbler, Garden Warbler, Wood Warbler and Blackcap reside in the wooded areas, and a few Swallows, House Martins and Sand Martins can be seen over the lake and close to the river. Regular sightings once again of the Barn Owls after dusk, the signs that they might raise their young on the reserve for a second successive year are at this early stage encouraging,, so fingers crossed crossed. There are thought to be around 4000 breeding pairs of Barn Owls in the UK, though 75% die within their first year underlining their fragile existence, so another successful breeding year would be good news news. The reserve is also a stronghold for bats, with dusk again being the best time for observing them. There are 17 breeding bat species in the UK UK. The Mills is host to Soprano and Common Pipistrelle as well as Daubenton’s bats, s, though a bat survey carried out in 2010 also recorded single sightings of Barbastelle and Noctule species on site site. The average Pipistrelle ms and can consume up to bat weighs just 5 grams 3000 insects in one night! There are numerous bat boxes located around the reserve and th these, with the excellent natural habitat habitat, allows them to thrive. The he Highland Cattle, which over wintered on the North Norfolk Coast will be back around mid May. It was hoped that some may be in calf when they returned, although this has proved not to be the case. ge in personnel at the reserve. Finally news of a change After 15 years as Head Warden, Simon Wrigglesworth found the lure of life in the Lake District too big a temptation temptation! Simon played a major part in the development of the reserve and all who know him wish him well. Harry Waye Waye-Barker joins as Simon’s replacement. Harry has a wealth of experience having worked for the RSPB for 5 years and is very much looking forward to the challenge ahead. More in a few months! Steve Spurgeon

Taverham Veterinary Practice, Fir Covert Rd, Taverham, Norwich, NR8 6HT, Tel: 01603 867330 My case of the month is based on another very unusual cat. Marlin is an 8 year old Siamese who presented to us following a cat fight a few days earlier. This has happened before as Marlon clearly takes defending his territory very seriously and previouslyy his bites have healed with no problems. This time the bite was on top of his head. It was cleaned and he was treated with an anti-inflammatory inflammatory pain killer and a long acting antibiotic. Unfortunately Marlon became more unwell the following day. He started ted to act very strangely, appearing disorientated, wobbly and he even tried to step off the consulting room table into the thin air. With the development of such serious neurological symptoms Marlon was rushed by his owners to Dick White Referrals in Newmarket arket and an MRI scan showed that he had developed a brain abscess. A surgery was performed to make a hole in the skull and remove the pus that had formed. Remarkably Marlon made a very quick and full recovery and was soon discharged home. Cat bites are very ry common and usually present as swellings under the skin. Normally once the pus is released they heal well. Marlon was extremely unlucky to have sustained such as nasty infection and thankfully this is a very unusual scenario. We are now fortunate to have ave Susie Kenefick helping us on a consultancy basis. Susie is a medical veterinary specialist who has previously worked at the Animal Health Trust and Dick White Referrals and following a relocation to Norwich she is now helping us with some of the more complex omplex medical cases. Drayton & District Country Market at Taverham Village Hall Thanks to anyone who supported our Good Friday Market. We had quite a successful morning and the proceeds from our raffle were sent to Cerebra, a charity for young people with brain injuries. A cold April has meant we have not had too many plants available but hopefully the weather will improve and the bedding plants will soon be on sale. We would be pleased to see you any Friday morning. We are in the Old Hall at Taverham Village Hall between 8:45 45 and 11:00 11 am. We have cakes, pies, preserves, eggs and craft items for sale and there are refreshments available. VALE PROBUS CLUB MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE What is Message in a Bottle? The Lions Message in a Bottle scheme is a simple idea which encourages those who live e alone, have an illness or disability, to keep their basic personal nal and medical details in a plastic bottle in the fridge where it can be easily found in an emergency How does the scheme work? Your details are stored in a clearly labelled plastic container which is kept in the fridge. Two labels with green crosses are provided. One is displayed on the fridge door and the other on the inside of the front door. When emergency staff attend a patient who is confused, incapable or unconscious they look for the green cross labels to determine the current patient's patient medication What does it cost? We will probably visit again next year. year There are still a few vacancies for new members on Tuesdays. Our May meeting commenced with a commemoration of Derek Snelling who sadly has died, having been our President only two years ago, and a true gentle man. In a way our speaker, Ray Cossey, continued the theme of commemoration ation in his talk about the Blitz in Norwich. He gave us a number of graphic accounts of the experiences, lives and deaths of individual people in specific raids. These were firmly rooted in their actual locations, illustrated by photos which often linked the scenes then with how they look now. As he built up the detail from the first raid through the terrible Baedeker raids to more spasmodic attacks at the end of the war, we empathised in some awe with those involved. On the anniversary of VE-day day it seemed very fitting to reflect on the suffering, privations and heroism that existed in the streets which are now bustling with peaceful and prosperous activity. It was also very thought thought-provoking to see pictures of the total devastation in the city centre and realise ealise how much has been rebuilt, and to appreciate Norwich’s good luck in that its main historic buildings escaped destruction. Many personal memories were stirred, not least for Ray himself as he recalled his own father’s heroic rescue work while severelyy injured. In “question time” afterwards members were keen to tell of their own experiences. It also transpired that a messenger boy mentioned by Ray, who showed amazing heroism in the thick of the bombing, was now a senior member of the family of one of our ur members! Many thanks, Ray. Drayton Horticultural Association Your Local Gardening Club

Holding Hands with our Courageous Children

I think we can safely and honestly say that the 40th Anniversary meeting was a great success despite previous misgivings. The large audience was made up of current members, including seven founder members, plus invited past members, and these included the very first secretary, the first treasurer, a former chairman, a former treasurer and a former Vice-Chairman/Show Chairman/Show Secretary. On entering the hall, to the right side (Pond Lane) was the display of vases containing several classes of cut daffodils and tulips; on the kitchen side were vases of shrub stems, flowering and foliage, ending with pot plant exhibits. At the front of the stage was a table of flower arrangements. In total there were just over 100 exhibits from 14 members, a very satisfactory result. Our special guest was the wel well-known Radio Norfolk gardening expert Richard Hobbs who took us round the world to see unusual plants and flowers. Following the talk we held the ceremonial cutting of the cake by our President Richard Madle. The cake plus others provided by members was cut ut up and served to everyone during a refreshment and chat break. Finally the raffle of 19 prizes with a 'ruby' theme was drawn and we all went home happy after a memorable meeting. A rather different subject for our meeting on the 2nd June, when Adam Thurtle rtle will explain all about the Restoration of the River Wensum. With the river meandering through our villages this will be of interest to many of us and visitors will be welcome to join us Village Hall, Pond Lane, 7:30 p.m., cost £1. Sid Bunn - 867837

You cannot underestimate the therapy of fun!!

This could benefit your child or grandchild

We are a group of mums fundraising this year under the umbrella of the Addenbrooke'ss Charitable Trust (Reg Charity 1048868) and the Norwich Norfolk University U Foundation Trust (Reg Charity 1048170). The inspiration behind the group is Gemma, a five year old little girl who managed to keep smiling and laughing through the most frightening of days in hospital. Gemma had a tumour removed in April 2014 and if it hadn’t have been for the support of the Play Teams within the hospital her family do not know how they would have got her and them through her multiple scans and procedures. We would like to raise enough money to make children in hospital smile and laugh through entertainment. The money raised will be split between: The N&N where it will provide a children’s entertainer, entertainer for at least a year, to the children’s n’s wards and day units for them too enjoy and to have some relief from their daily struggles. Addenbrooke'ss Ward C2 and the Paediatric Day Unit Play Team.. The unit is the regional children’s oncology (cancer) and haematology (blood disorders) outpatient clinic. The Play Team are a fundamental undamental part of the team there supporting the children and their families through their daily procedures and treatments. Our Main Event is A ‘Traditional Family Fun Day’ being held at The Meadow, Cromer Road Aylsham on 15th August 2-6pm. 6pm. Providing fun and a enjoyment for all the family - Face Painting & Tattoos, Games, Fun Force, Bouncy Castle, Beat The Goalie, Ladies Pamper Treatments & Cake Stall - whilst raising funds for these two amazing departments. departments Tickets for the event go on sale from 18th May and can be purchased via Juliet Waller 07733016757. The event is pre-ticket sales only.

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB Tuesday 28th April Steve Hubble has been in the music business for more than 30 years, starting his professional career as a concert organist and keyboard player and going on to run his own shop and music school. For the last few years he has returned to the organ circuit ass well as playing for private and public functions. Our club members and visitors benefited greatly from this wealth of experience when Steve visited us, showing us how he combines his excellent playing and arranging skills with the realistic sounds and fe features of his Tyros set-up up with 2 keyboards, foot pedals and speakers. Steve played with much feeling and energy from the start - his opening medley of Barbara Streisand numbers, the haunting film themes of John Barry's Out of Africa and Dances with Wolves Wolves, authentic big band and orchestral arrangements, jazzy organ versions of Girl From Ipanema and Why Haven't I Heard From You, Karl Jenkins Palladio, Water Fountain, Sleepy Shores and Misty showing off the piano voices, bending the trumpet on Cherry Pink an and Apple Blossom White to name a few - the music kept coming and filled the hall with an impressive sound. An encore of Duelling Banjos finished off a very pleasant evening and gave us a jolly tune to hum on the way home. Tuesday 30th June - Chris Powell and Brett Wales. Our concert this month involves two of the country’s top professional organists, both very popular individually and they have entertained us on many occasions. Do come along and join in the fun as they present their duet uet show on Roland and Wersi organs, you will be very welcome. Martin Drake (Chairman), 01603 745544

Weston Longville Village Cinema

June's film is The Testament of Youth (PG 13). 13 This is an outstanding and powerful period drama set during WW1, based on an incredible edible true story of a young woman who struggles to survive the horrors of that war, which robs her of everything she holds dear but fails to break her extraordinary spirit. This very moving romantic drama has attracted excellent reviews for both the acting actin and the authenticity of the period settings. It will be shown on 20 June at Weston Longville's Hall for All. Doors open at 7:00 for a 7:30 start.. Entrance £5 for the film, a warm welcome, a wine gum on entry and there’s the added gastronomic delight of an included luxury ice cream (with a choice of flavours!) at the interval. All welcome! Proceeds go to the Hall for All. 19

Taverham WI

www.taverham-wi.co.uk Having prepared our gardening questions in advance our speaker for April Charlotte Philcox sadly cancelled at the last minute because of ill health ..…what to do? After a few minutes panic and texting between committee members a beetle drive was settled on and having got together the appropriate materials, checked on line again for the rules the evening was a great success with much fun and laughter. At our group meeting in Costessey Mike Wabe thrilled us with the tale of England’s first serial killer Mary Ann Cotton. We lost count of just how many husbands, lovers and children she killed with arsenic before being caught, tried and sentenced to be hanged. We managed to choose a fine evening for our spring dinner at Wensum Golf Club and the view of the sunset over the valley was a fitting end to an enjoyable meal. Again this year Taverham WI will be entering the Federation competition at the Norfolk Show and taking part in the Taverham Fayre. There are a number of events to celebrate the National Women’s Institutes Centenary year both national and local. The Norfolk Belles WI choir will be performing at the two garden parties at Gressenhall in July and again at Blickling in August. Some of us are lucky to be going to the Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace early in June - I will report back on that next month. Before the holiday rush we hope to visit Wells WI for a guided walk and lunch and enjoy a lovely day at the seaside. Our programme for the next two months: June 12th: Pam Bugg - ‘Craft Activity’ July 10th: Maureen Risborough - ‘Sandringham WI’ Gina Clapson, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk

The Home Care Specialists

Do you need a Helping Hand?

Drayton Flower Club The Annual General Meeting of the Club was swiftly dealt with and we have decided to support the East Coast Truckers Charity once again this year. Watch out for a special coffee morning in August. We were then hugely entertained by Melissa Sheldrake and her Box of Delights which consisted of Melissa's auction 'buys' beautifully illustrated by working models cleverly made by her husband. The first item out of the Box was a sumptuous white feather French fan, the model to go with it? a working guillotine! Further surprises followed during a very entertaining and informative talk. The demonstrator for June is Mrs Ann Colby and ' All the good things ' The Club Competition is being held this month with the title ' Golden Anniversary ' and we will also be having a brief visit from the East Coast Truckers representative to receive their cheque for £460. Come and join us for a friendly, fun filled, floral and foliage fiesta. Details of Club activities Pam Bailey 867730
