DISTRICT COUNCILORS’ REPORT

A happy New Year to all Taverham residents, businesses, schools and organisations from the Steering Group.

The Taverham Neighbourhood Plan is your community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It is about the use and development of land over the next 20 years.

This year we aim to have the Plan finalised, approved and adopted. So, we are looking towards 2039.

The Neighbourhood Plan can’t stop development, but it can influence the provision of housing, community facilities, the environment, businesses, services and transport access by developing local planning policy.

One of the aims is to ‘Give a voice to residents to shape developments’. Our next consultation events are Saturday 26 January 12 noon to 5:00 pm at the Village Hall on Sandy Lane and Friday 1st February 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hinks Meadow. Please drop in, have a chat over refreshments and comment on the emerging ideas for our Plan. Everyone is welcome; families and individuals. It will be great to see you.

During the spring, we will be writing the Plan. If it is successful at Referendum, the Plan will become part of the statutory development for the area. Together our views do matter and so make sure you have your say on the future of our village.

Protecting green areas and having high quality public spaces are high on many residents’ lists. If you live close to or own a green space, we would like to hear from you.

Speeding - Sandy Lane: The speeding in Sandy Lane has not improved. In fact it has got worse. The dark nights are here. Children come out of school at 3:30 when it is dark. It is a nightmare for parents and children with cars, lorries and tractors speeding. The Police are aware of the situation. They monitor the road every day but cannot be there 24/7.

Street Lights: We have had many complaints regarding street lights in Sandy Lane. There are street lights on the left hand side going down Sandy Lane. There are lights which cannot be seen as the bushes and trees black them out. Broadland has been informed regarding this problem. The trees should be cut

by Norfolk County Council - 3 months later nothing has been done. We are pressing hard on this matter.

Taverham Junior School has filled and sent 78 shoe boxes of items to Africa. Items in the shoe boxes include toothpaste, toothbrushes, hats, gloves, toys, sweets, notebooks, pencils and pens. The children chose if it was to be for a girl/boy and the age of the child. Blythswood Care helped with the boxes. The lady who was taking the boxes to Africa will be going in a few weeks. She will then come back to talk to the children about Africa and how they will spend Christmas. Well done Taverham Junior School!

MESSY CHURCH

We have, as usual, been very busy at Messy Church. As well as the story time, the singing session and prayers, we have been using the sand tray, paints, glue, stickers etc. for the lots of wonderful arts and crafts activities. The younger children have had lots of fun playing with the numerous toys we have out at each session.

Our first Messy Church in 2019 will be on Tuesday 15th January. This is one week later than we would normally be meeting.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY I am sure we all thought we knew all about “Mustard, Boots & Beer” before the presentation by Chris Armstrong in November but how wrong we were.

Professionally delivered, this extremely interesting and informative talk included extracts from his book of the same title.

Some of these Quaker and Methodist, influential and enterprising men of business certainly had a few tricks up their sleeves and perhaps sometimes used questionable methods to increase not only their position in society but also financial and political standing. Having said that, the recovery and success of Norwich during the Nineteenth century by the eight individuals mentioned, should not be underestimated.

Has this managed to whet your appetite for more knowledge then why not come along to our next or future presentations for more details look out for our posters about the village or read your Newsletter?

Our complete programme of events for 2019 has been printed and will be available for you to take away and update your diaries at our first presentation on 20th February when Mary Fewster will present the “Norwich Pleasure Gardens”. We look forward to seeing you.

At our AGM in November our membership invited Janet Colbert to remain as President for another year and I along with other members of the committee and the greater membership are very happy that she has been willing to do this.

We welcome 2019 with a new programme which will be published in full next month as there are still a few tweaks to be made to some of the dates. However our January meeting will be a social evening to start another year of fun and friendship.

Having just celebrated 60 years of Taverham WI we now move on to celebrate The Norfolk Federation Centenary year with many events planned across the county we look forward to taking part in some of these events and reporting back on them.

You may have noticed that there is new logo heading this article this is to start the Centenary year and it was thought to modernize the image to go along with modern women’s role in today’s society.

The jury’s out on the design but as in all things we all have differing views.

Personally I like it.

I shall be standing down from being the regular WI contributor to the Newsletter to allow for a fresh approach by other members. TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE Hello Readers, We hope you enjoyed or at least managed over the Christmas period, are now recovering from all the additional hustle and bustle that came with it and looking forward to the year ahead. Maybe thinking of doing something new – like getting involved with your local youth club! Working with young people can be very rewarding and re-energising and works on a basis that suits you. You can access free and low-cost training relevant to the work and gain work experience in this field. We always offer a trial session so please get in touch and support your local youth club/s.

During November we enjoyed a Guy Fawkes themed night with a quiz, word puzzles, mask making and make your own chocolate apples with sprinkles, we also provided bags and ribbon to decorate but many apples never made it this far as they looked too good to save!

We also played games on the Xbox, enjoyed team Quiz night and making Christmas scented baubles using clementines, ribbon and sequins.

The clubs are open as follows (term time only): Tuesdays 7:00-9:00pm for school years 8, 9, 10 & 11 Wednesdays 6:30-8:30pm for school years 5, 6, 7 & 8 Fridays 7:30-9:30pm for ages 13 – 17 For new members the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter. This includes access to and use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious/social background.

security fences, cameras and lights. Plot holders even resort to organising security patrols, especially at harvest time when the pickings are plentiful.

Another area which can spark disputes is the management and allocation of plots. Allegations of favouritism and queue jumping arise especially when the rules and responsibilities are not made clear to tenants when they take on a tenancy. In one reported case a plot holder accused the management committee of trying to evict him because his plot was too fertile. The council eventually intervened and restored his tenancy.

Neighbourliness is not always evident. One couple never spoke to each other for 11 years after a boundary and footpath argument. Fortunately at TALGA our problems are restricted to minor ones and are usually resolved amicably by the management committee and the Parish Council.

In Premier ‘B’ the ‘A’ team is at present 6th but this could change very soon as they have played more matches than anyone else and other teams will catch up with their fixtures. Andrew Calver is playing well.

In Division 1 the ‘B’ and the ‘C’ teams met in the League and the ‘B’ took all four points with an 8-2 victory. Six of the individual matches went the distance to five sets, but the ‘C’ could only win one of those. Eric Melvin won all his games and young Lewis Ross, playing up for the ‘B’ had terrific victories over Janet Kelly and James Ashworth but could not get past the wily and evergreen Geoff Cook.

The ‘B’ is 4th in the Division but the ‘C’ has slipped into the relegation zone.

The ‘D’ and ‘E’ teams will play their own ‘derby match’ shortly as part of their Division 2A fixtures.

Currently the ‘E’ is second and the ‘D’ fifth. The youngsters from the ‘E’ will be looking to defeat some of the older players of the ‘D’; game on as they say. The Chairman is neutral of course!!

At the Norfolk County Championships, four players represented the Club – James Ashworth, Janet Kelly, Alex Edmunds and Lewis Ross. Alex and Lewis reached the Doubles semi-finals in the Juniors. Lewis went on to contest the finals in both the Under 18 and Under 16 events, but sadly lost. All players did us proud. Dennis and Margaret Calver officiated.

Well, the Christmas festivities are all done and dusted for another year, though as I write this on 2nd December 93 Roundwood members and their guests have just enjoyed the first of 3 functions organised by their Social Committee....a dinner with disco at the Wensum Valley Golf Club. The Christmas Show at Potters was up next on the 9th December with dinner, overnight stay and breakfast on the cards. The entertainment concluded with Roger’s Christmas Quiz on Friday 14th December when hopefully members Christmas jumpers were on display.

The next Social event lined up does have serious bowls at heart....the World Championships held at Potters resort.

Spectators will be able to watch a Singles match in the morning and the Mixed Pairs semi-finals in the afternoon.

Tickets include coach travel and lunch so hopefully a good day will be had by all and a few tips picked up to use on the Roundwood rinks.

On the rinks the Men's A team tops the table in Division 2 whilst the B team has won 2 and lost 2 of its matches. The Ladies A and B teams both compete in the Northern division.

The A team currently has the edge at the half way stage but there is all to play for in the New Year.

On the subject of Resolutions there isn't much to look forward to during the frosty expanse of January and on top of that we are supposed to deny ourselves the things that make us happy, join a gym and lose a stone! (Just remember, however that resolutions don't count if you are hungover anyway .....!)

Allotment Wars

Allotments are supposed to a place of relaxation, peace and tranquillity. We like think so at TALGA but in other parts of the country that is not always the case. In fact in recent years there has been an escalation of disputes between plot holders. The Society of Allotment Holders and Leisure Gardeners reports a steep rise in disputes ranging from sabotaging crops, poisoning water tanks and even burning down sheds and destroying greenhouses, often fuelled by jealousy and envy.

A common source of disagreement stems from boundary encroachment when fences and posts are moved or footpaths changed. Over the years societies have been forced to reduce the size of plots as land for allotments becomes scarce and demand increases. In some urban areas plot rents are over £100 plus a heavy water charge.

Theft and vandalism are a real problem in towns and cities where allotments have to be protected by 13

WENSUM DIVISION GUIDING REMEMBERS 100 years since the end of the First World War, a time for remembering as well as celebrating. Taverham, Costessey, Hellesdon & Horsford and Old Catton Districts came together at the Bob Carter Centre on Saturday 10th November to remember. Over 150 girls and their leaders spent their day on various activities; their first task was to put together care packages for current service personnel serving abroad. Everyone in the Division was asked to bring their contributions, which they then packed into boxes that could only weigh a maximum of 2 kg. We managed to put together 75 packages and what remained was donated to the local homeless shelter.

The girls then cut out a poppy, writing a personal note and placing on our graffiti wall. We also remembered the many animals that gave their lives to the war effort and they made purple and red poppies for a wreath. Before lunch horseshoes were put together and the girls completed an activity booklet. Various stalls were set up and the girls could learn how to sew a patch, tie up bandage for an injured arm, look at memorabilia from the First World War and the most popular was “Sweet Rationing”, where they had to guess how many sweets they would be allowed to have to eat for a week! Not many guessed right and they then had their own ration ticket which enabled them to purchase the said amount. Many were surprised at how many they were allowed to have!

After lunch Rev Margaret from Horsford came along and we held our own Remembrance Service, unit flags were displayed and a minute’s silence was observed.

The rainbows and brownies together read a poem and two guides from Thorpe Marriott read out a soldier’s poem. A member of trefoil read a poem called Poppies and scattered paper poppies whilst reading. It was rounded off by our new County Commissioner, Christine Martin, reading “In Flanders Fields”. It was a very girl interactive service and one that will be remembered by all in the future.

We wish to thank everyone that came to this first Division event organised by our new Division Commissioner, Carin Pratt and her team.

January 1 or thereabouts so it is only right to say to our readers a big Happy New Year ……..well at least until 29th March!! I shall now get my hand slapped because as an organisation the Lions have a rule not to engage in anything political but our lives seem to be 24/7 politics at the moment or am I just a grumpy old fool. At the start of a New Year it is only right to give our reader (you know who you are!) a very big thank you for helping us raise the money used on the many causes we support. I don’t want to confuse our reader but in next month’s edition I will report on our success with our newly repainted Christmas float. I drove it on the Monday for its first outing to scare our lovely residents as they sat down to watch “Strictly Take Two”.

You will appreciate that for confidentially I never reveal the names of those benefiting from our donations but to give you a better idea where your monies are being spent I can give a general picture. A young girl was diagnosed with cancer at 8 months old and as a club we have made a donation to the Sick Children’s Trust which helps provide accommodation for parents of very sick children. We are helping the Homeless again and I know that some readers may disapprove but we have decided to purchase more sleeping bags for those who are sleeping rough. We haven’t forgotten our local request and I am pleased to report that the Club funded the Christmas lunch for all the members of our own Taverham Day Centre. Hopefully these three donations give you a flavour of our support and if you have any comment then please contact our president, Sue Howes.

TAVERHAM JUNIOR SCHOOL PTFA Quiz and Chips Night th Friday, 8 February, 7:15pm for a 7:45pm start Taverham Junior School PTFA is raising funds to support the purchase of replacement outdoor play equipment at the school. The previous equipment had to be condemned in the summer as it was rotting and no longer fit for purpose.

We will be holding our annual Quiz & Chips night to raise money for this cause. It will take place in the school hall and there will be a variety of question rounds with an additional cash prize game during the interval.

We will be serving fish and chips during the course of the evening. Please bring your own drinks, cutlery and condiments will be provided. Please note the school has a ‘no nuts’ policy.

All of us should be making sure our medicine cabinets are stocked. It’s also sensible to order any regular medicines you need in good time so you don’t run out, taking care to only order what you need.

But if you do feel poorly, seek advice from your local pharmacist before it gets worse.

If it’s urgent, then a call to your GP or NHS111 is the next step, and they’ll advise you what to do.

Stay at home and rest. #HelpUsHelpYou HomeFirst – your bed is the best bed! None of us want to go into hospital or a care bed, but if we do it’s good to get home if we can. The NHS and social care across all of Norfolk and Waveney are stressing that if someone needs a hospital or temporary care bed they will get one, but our aim is always to help people get back home as soon as possible. This is because older people in particular can lose independence rapidly. Being back home can also help a speedier recovery. So if you know a friend or relative, particularly if they are older, who has to go into hospital it would be kind to make sure they have all they need to get back home, including checking the heating works and they will have food in the house, the washing is done and they feel OK. New Year, New You: With the start of a New Year people’s thoughts turn to getting fit and improving their health. To stay healthy or improve health, adults need to do two types of physical activity each week: aerobic and strength exercises.

How much physical activity you need to do each week depends on your age. Adults aged 65 or older who are generally fit and have no health conditions that limit their mobility should try to be active daily by doing at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity such as cycling or walking, and strength exercises on two or more days a week.

Why not join a local walking group, go for a swim or join a local class, your library should have information about groups near you.

There are many local services that can enable older people to be more active. A wealth of information can be found through the Norfolk Community Directory.

Hi Everyone, Firstly please let me wish you all a very Happy and a safe New Year. Unfortunately the excitement of Christmas has passed and the promise of long warm summer days seem like a distant hope, it is at this time of year that many people suffer from what have over the years wrongly entitle the Post-Christmas Blues and for some this can lead into depression. For years depression was a taboo subject and it was never mentioned but nowadays it is recognised for what it is, an illness, and is also recognised that people from all walks and professions can suffer at any time, indeed recently some very high profile Sportsmen have spoken out about their own personal experiences and how they have sought help and recovery. If you recognise a decline in either your own mental health or someone else’s, there are organisations and charities out there that do offer help and guidance, one such charity is YANA (You Are Not Alone). YANA has successfully raised the profile of mental health, highlighting that it is ‘ok not to feel ok’. It encourages those who are suffering from depression, stress or anxiety to visit their GP promptly or contact the YANA confidential helpline. The Project can fund up to six sessions of counselling either via its helpline or a patient’s GP and can put that in place within days with current NHS counselling waiting lists often running into months.

Now that our Christmas festivities are over (and I thank David Wright for his excellent November floral demonstration, quickly followed by Bernard Collingsworth giving us a super afternoon’s seasonal workshop that was so enjoyed), we will move on to a New Year. January sees the return of our first meeting of the year, but an afternoon session this time! On Tuesday 15th January we are holding a Beetle Drive for club members and anyone who wishes to take part, 2:00pm until 4:00pm. There will be prizes for the winners and a special reward for the greatest looser! We hope that this will be an afternoon of fun and frivolity to brighten a winter’s day. The cost is FREE to members and just £1 for visitors.

It would be remiss of me not to give you advance warning (so that you can book the date) of a very special event; Saturday 15th June we will be holding our FINAL meeting. After almost 55 years it was with great sadness that we had to advise our members, late last year, of the impending closure. Local Dog Lovers’ Solution to Modern Day Loneliness

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists. Starting at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and raffle, finishing at 10:00pm. No extra membership fee, entrance is £6 at the door.

Tuesday November 27th Our November meeting had a distinctive European flavour to it when the extremely popular Dutch organist Dirkjan Ranzijn entertained an enthusiastic audience comprising our club members and many visitors from further afield.

A truly international musician supported by the Bohm Organ Team, Dirk always has a very busy concert schedule across Europe and the UK and has released his 25th solo album this year.

With audience participation being actively encouraged Dirk’s shows are not exactly a one-man affair – he had us all clapping, singing and rocking in our seats from the very start, even had some of us jumping up and down in the 2nd half, no time to be bored!

Dirk’s programme included Neil Diamond, The Eagles, Buddy Holly, John Denver, Abba, stage and screen, rock ‘n’ roll and a very upbeat ‘Volare’ as well as music from across Europe. At times it was just as exciting to watch the energy in the performance as listening to him but there were quiet moments too, especially when Dirk played Pie Jesu as a dedication to Chiho Sunamoto, another very talented musician who sadly passed away recently.

With the warm mince pies and seasonal raffle the evening was a fitting end to our concert year.

Volunteer dog cuddling is being offered by Barking Mad South Norfolk as an antidote to the problem of loneliness in modern society. For those who are retired or work from home and are spending large chunks of time alone, caring for a waggy-tailed companion on a temporary basis and meeting other likeminded dog lovers could really help to overcome feelings of isolation.

The perception of loneliness as mainly an issue for the older generation is now proving inaccurate as a study from the Office for National Statistics suggests that young adults are more likely to feel lonely than older people. Due to huge advances in technology, the number of freelancers and remote workers is rising, an article in Business Leader claims that a ‘third of business owners think that the workforce will work remotely by 2020.’

VALE PROBUS CLUB “Norfolk Blood Bikes.”

www.wvbs.co.uk Last month was a busy one for several WVBS members.

We enjoyed an excellent talk from Zoe Smith, who is the Urban Peregrine Officer from the Hawk and Owl Trust, based at Sculthorpe. Zoe’s main focus is the Peregrine project which has Lottery funding for three years. We all know the Peregrine as the world’s fastest animal and, indeed they are during a ‘stoop’, but we learned that they are actually quite slow when flying on the level. Pigeons are faster! In 2011 the current nest platform was built and the birds moved in within days. In 2017 and 2018 4 eggs were laid but with very different levels of success. In 2017 one was damaged and didn’t hatch, one chick died on the nest, the female dropped one over the side of the nest when very small and the last was very lucky to survive a Magpie attack. All of this was, of course, captured on camera. In 2018 the older and wiser bird raised three chicks to fledging. The watch point at the Cathedral is manned by volunteers and HOT staff from March to June and is well worth a visit.

Outdoors members have been travelling. A group of three drove all the way to Cornwall to see the American Grey Catbird that had been discovered near Lands End. The Grey Catbird doesn’t look at all cat-like but apparently sounds quite like one. Nearer home Phil Borley identified a Brown Shrike at Weybourne. Further afield the Joneses visited Mongolia in search of Snow Leopards. Reports of all these trips can be found in our newsletter on the WVBS website.

Future events: Indoor meetings are held on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7:30pm. All are welcome (£2 for non-members).

Until Keith Grisedale’s talk in December, few of us had any knowledge of ‘Blood Bikes’ other than this sort of experience: “There’s a police motor bike coming up behind me: I can see the brightly coloured markings and I think I can see a blue light, although it’s not flashing**. I’ll just ease over and let him through. Ah, now I can see it with says ‘BLOOD’ on the back. Not police then; but what is it exactly?”

Keith had the answer: These are volunteers with “Services by Emergency Response Volunteers” (SERV), who take over in the evenings, when the NHS emergency service vehicles no longer operate.

A small-scale operation fifty years ago in south London supporting the Air Ambulance with essential supplies has now grown into a national network of local volunteer groups. From early beginnings, when volunteers used their own vehicles, the Norfolk group now has a fleet of ten motor cycles and four cars, with a team of Controllers liaising with the hospitals and despatching the bikes to where they are needed.

Overnight the bikers are on a ten minute stand-by and can be called into action at any time from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, transporting blood samples, vaccines or urgently required medical items, as well as breast milk for babies in intensive care. All labour costs are swallowed up by volunteers but the vehicles are expensive and have a limited lifetime. Not surprising then that, as we left, the collecting box was popular with our members. Now we knew what Blood Bikes were all about!

FREE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS

A series of free community workshops will help anyone interested in setting up a social or community enterprise either based in or delivering a service in the Broadland District.

The programme, run by Lola Stafford Consulting Ltd which is itself a social enterprise, and funded by Broadland District Council, starts with a taster session on Wednesday February 6th - Exploring Entrepreneurship 10:00 am – 12:00.

Wednesday morning workshops follow weekly from 9:30 am - 1:00pm and include;  Business Planning  Business Registration and recruiting directors  Feel the Fear, managing emotional blockers to success  Financial Planning  Bid writing  Practical completion of a bid document  Marketing We will also hold a post programme "surgery" in April to support your progress.

The programme is suitable for any residents or groups interested in going down this route whether they are just thinking about the possibility or are existing enterprises looking to become financially sustainable.

It offers practical support in a relaxed environment and you can either book onto the whole series or pick and choose the workshops which will help you.

Welcome to 2019 and may we please have better weather than we had last year! Many years ago the club paid an evening visit to Thorncroft Clematis in Reymerston, established by the Gooch family. The nursery has now so large that they no longer have visitors because all land has been taken up by plants, and they haven’t got the staff. Luckily for us, a third-generation member of the family visited us in November, Peter Skeggs-Gooch. He was sorry the company could no longer accommodate visitors and that he was unable to bring plants for us to buy.

What he did bring was copies of the 2018 catalogue, free to our members. This contained photos of the many plants they grow – large varieties, small ones, even patio ones, evergreens – and we were shown slides of just a few of the many available. Over the years the company has been awarded many medals but their most prized ones are the ten gold medals from Chelsea. The catalogue also contains important information on planting, pruning and feeding, and plants can be ordered on line – a very enjoyable evening.

To start the New Year we have invited the weatherman Chris Bell to come and explain the subject of Climate Change. Please note that this meeting is on MONDAY JANUARY 7th, for this month only. Visitors are welcome – any queries please give me a call.
