Once again we would like to say thank you on behalf of the EAST ANGLIAN AIR AMBULANCE for the donations at our Christmas Lights, we would like to thank Taverham Newsletter, and the Thorpe Marriot/Taverham/Drayton community site for helping us on facebook. not forgetting our neighbours for being tolerant with the extra traffic. this year we can donate a grand total of £2,637·56 which is over £700 more than last year.

End of an era, 12th December 2107, the Tuesday Friendship Club met for the last time. It started back in 1959 as the “The Senior Residents Club”. The club was started for the over Sixties and had over 100 members, There was a real need in those days for people to get together. Few had cars or holidays abroad and certainly no free bus pass.

I have in my possession two photo albums from the 1970’s and 1980’s. It could be possible you may have relatives in there. There was a very active

Back to 2017, on 5th December, 35 members went out for Christmas lunch.

On the 12th December the old club closed down with a Quiz, Buffet and a surprise visit from Farther Christmas and each member received a present. They all must have been very good last year.

Sad though it is the club has closed, the Village Hall is going to have “coffee, cake and chat” mornings, every 3rd Tuesday of the Month, with the first on Tuesday 20th February followed by 20th March, the regular Easter coffee morning. So don’t lose touch with each other, make that a date. I know I would love to see you all again.

TAVERHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

Established by the Localism Act 2011, a neighbourhood plan is a community-led document for guiding the future development of the parish. It focuses on the use and development of land over the next 20 years.

Once a plan is adopted, it becomes part of the Development Plan for Broadland District and a main consideration within the planning system.

Following an ‘awareness raising’ stall at Taverham Fayre and two ‘find out more’ meetings, the Parish Council established a Steering Group comprising 8 residents and 6 parish councillors. It is chaired by Sue Elmes, with Brenda Clarke secretary and Chris WilsonTown treasurer. Other members are Nigel and Glenis Langley, Margaret Garwood, Janice Whiting, Rosemary Brown, Hazel McMillan, John Pennells, Roger Morris, Dave Wilson, Judy Tyler and Janet Latchford.

Aided by a very experienced consultant, the Steering Group drafted the aims and vision. The draft aims, i.e. what we are trying to achieve, are to: Give a voice to residents to shape development  Allow the village to grow sustainably  Enhance the sense of community  Protect and maintain the natural environment  Identify community needs for the use of developer contributions.

The draft vision, i.e. what we would like the outcome to be, is:By 2039, Taverham will remain a wellconnected, viable and appropriately designed semi-rural village with a strong integrated community. Recognising the parish heritage, it will have excellent services, a variety of quality homes, flourishing businesses, valued countryside and wooded areas.

Taverham will be a safe and sustainable place where people want to live, work and play.

The next stage will be to consult with all Taverham residents about the draft aims and vision and identify issues concerning you. Some of these will become objectives and policies, i.e. what we want Broadland District to take into account.

Over the coming months, we will be contacting local organisations and businesses, as well as holding public meetings. We are also keen for any resident who feels they can help our work to speak to anyone of us or write to TNP Steering Group via the Parish Council office.

In February last year I was able to open my report in a positive manner but this year is disappointingly different. Investigations are ongoing to find the hirers who allowed the carpet in Suite 2 to become soiled with what appears to be a pool of candle wax substance, far too much simply to clean.

There are black scuff marks on the newly painted walls of Suite 1, racking and equipment abandoned in the corridor of the Old Hall, sheets of glass in a kitchen rubbish bin and so much general rubbish left the external bins and cleaner’s store are overflowing. A great deal of hard work and commitment is expended in order to provide facilities of an extremely high standard which, in general, are respected and appreciated by the majority. This is being undermined by a few mindless, thoughtless individuals and is far from acceptable. I shall keep you posted as; yes, I am angry but, not defeated.

Please don’t forget our ever popular Indoor Car Boot Sale is on the 24th February, 12:00 – 2:00pm, but you will need to get there early to avoid missing a great bargain. Our fund raising team is working hard to help fund our improvements to the Bedford Room to provide even better facilities in addition to our ongoing redecoration programme and your continued support is always greatly appreciated.

Please look out for the notice with details of our Annual General Meeting on the 15th March as this is your opportunity to voice any opinions regarding the future management of the Hall.

Although it may not seem like it, spring is just around the corner. The soil on the plots will soon be warming up and it will be time to start sowing seed and planting crops once again.

There is still some broccoli and kale to pick, a few parsnips left to dig up and the rhubarb is starting to shoot under the forcing pot placed over it a while ago. Peas and broad beans are growing in pots at home and potatoes are chitting in the garage. It’s a time of expectation after the winter months, and I just can’t wait to be able to get back on the plot regularly.

At the time of writing there are two plots available, so, if you live in Taverham and are interested in growing your own vegetables, fruit and flowers in a peaceful and beautiful location, please get in touch. We are a friendly group and there are a number of experienced gardeners willing to offer support should you need it. Bernie Collingsworth, our Membership Secretary, will be pleased to answer any queries you may have.

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE Hello Readers, Just as we are all getting back into our routines we have half term and the spring to look forwards to.

During December we only opened for 2 weeks and in that time we enjoyed making Christmas crackers with hats, snaps, jokes and sweets. Then on the last week we had a Christmas party with games (wrap the snowman, lucky dip), quiz, music, disco lights and food.

For the clubs opening times see page 27.

For new members the first session is FREE then £1 entry thereafter.

This includes access to/use of all the facilities (pool, table tennis, Xbox, WII, air hockey, table football, tuck shop) and free refreshments. We welcome all young people regardless of ethnicity, ability or religious background.

We urgently require adult volunteers to assist in the staffing of the Tuesday and Friday youth club. We are staffed by a small team of volunteers with a professional youth worker to support and guide them. You can volunteer on a basis that suit you. There is no need for experience; just a positive attitude and willingness to be around young people. You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training.

CQC rates Taverham Partnership as good

TAVERHAM WI

Our December meeting was not as planned; sadly the entertainers booked were not able to come so not to disappoint our members the Committee quickly planned ‘alternative’ entertainment. With the Ukulele Group demonstrating their new gained skills, some comic Christmas readings and the finale of a unique version of ‘Deck the Halls’ we were very pleased with the result. One member was overheard to say ‘I don’t know why we bother to pay for entertainers when we have so much of our own talent’ Praise indeed. Our evening finished with Win Hepper’s famous Christmas cake …a tradition not to be missed!

The Thursday lunch group enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch at the Wensum Valley Hotel, the scrabble group and photography group met to end the year in their own way. We have plans for further special interest groups as the year progresses towards the WI’s 2017 resolution ‘Alleviating Loneliness’.

Last month’s article focused on the first two meetings of Taverham WI 60 years ago and to give historical focus we will try each month to include a snippet from the notes of the meetings of the first year. We hope you will enjoy reading them as much as we have enjoyed researching and comparing with present events.

14th February 1958 ‘A quiz was held with teams from The Street, Taverham Road and Sandy Lane. This was won by the latter team. Miss Lyle and Miss Musk who had prepared the questions acted as scorers with Mrs Ramsey as question master. The Bring and Buy stall resulted in £2/3/6 for Institute funds’.

Also at this meeting in 1958 notice was given of the Federation Annual Meeting to be held in St Andrews Hall, this continues to this day as news has just been received of the speakers for the 2018 Federation Annul Meeting. Taverham WI will be represented again this year with a delegate and with as many visitors as we are allowed tickets for. This is a popular event in the Federation calendar and it is a good occasion to meet up with friends from other WI’s in the County.

Our speakers for the next two meetings are: March 9th: Tony Goode - Alpine Gardening April 13th: Ashley Baxter - Have Kids will Travel We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7:30pm till approx. 9:30pm in The Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane and we meet regularly for lunch at Wensum Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week.

The GP Practice in Taverham has been rated as good by the health and care regulator, the Care Quality Commission.

The doctors at Taverham surgery have paid tribute to all the staff for working so hard to ensure the practice is good for patients and good for the CQC. The report was published following an inspection in November.

There were three broad categories the CQC inspectors were looking at: ‘are services safe, caring and well-led?’

In all three categories the Practice is rated ‘Good’.

Dr Henry Kaszubowski, a partner at Taverham Partnership, said: “Of course we are delighted the CQC has visited us and concluded the services we offer patients are safe, caring and well led. We would like to thank all of the staff who worked so hard to ensure we met the very high standards expected of us.”

Key findings highlighted by the CQC included that the system for reporting, recording and learning from significant events had improved, there was an infection prevention and control audit in place with an associated action plan and that the system for identifying patients and the coding of their medical records, particularly those with diabetes, had been reviewed.

The CQC noted results from the national GP patient survey, published in July 2017, showed Taverham Partnership was rated as either above or in line with other practices. For example 91% of patients said the GP was good at listening to them compared to the local average (89%) and national average (89%). 91% of patients said the GP gave them enough time compared to the local average (86%) and national average (86%). 99% of patients said they had confidence and trust in the last GP they saw or spoke to, 98% of patients said they had confidence and trust in the last nurse they saw or spoke to and 95% of patients said they found the receptionists at the practice helpful - all meeting or exceeding local or national average ratings.

The CQC said: “The practice was aware of the new results and proud of the improvements that had been made. Similar improvements had been made in relation to patient’s satisfaction with their involvement in care and treatment.”

Taverham Partnership has more than 8,600 patients on its registered list. The CQC inspection followed a previous inspection in April in which they rated the surgery as ‘requires improvement overall’, with ‘requires improvement’ ratings for providing safe, caring and well led services. The latest inspection and report demonstrates the surgery has addressed all of the questions raised. Taverham Partnership was already rated as good for ‘effective’ and responsive’ by the CQC. Ben - the next instalment!!

You may remember Ben from a previous article. He featured as a case of a mystery illness that was eventually found to be caused by a potato stuck in the outflow from his stomach!

Two years on Ben presented to me initially with some weakness on his back legs which then progressed over a couple of weeks to severe weakness and he appeared “drunk” with loss of control of his hind limbs.

We suspected a spinal disc lesion and Ben was referred for specialist imaging and surgery. A prolapsed intervertebral disc was diagnosed and following surgery Ben has made a fantastic recovery. Currently the only problem is trying to persuade him that he still needs to take things easy for a little while longer!

Our wards are filling up with animals that are already over indulging in Christmas treats. Please keep those chocolates, mince pies and Christmas cake out of reach as they aren’t good for the furry members of our families!!

The committee is currently working extremely hard piecing together material for “Remember When, Chapter 3” in readiness for the 28th March which will again be presented on the big screen and will include more information about The Street, a lost airfield and a policeman.

We shall continue to keep you all up to date with our events and activities in this column throughout 2018.

Those who have yet to attend one of our events please be assured they are not too detailed and provide a glimpse into the past in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

With me being a new correspondent I’m not sure if our lovely readers are aware of the time scale with pieces for the Newsletter and of course this applies to all the correspondents. Now the reason for this little preamble is that you are holding the February edition of our fine local copy and I’m going to talk about Christmas!!!….. I am writing this on 30th December.

Not the record breaking collection totals of 2016 but still our Christmas Float did raise a very healthy sum to be used for charitable causes and a massive thank you to everyone in the community who shoved anything and everything into the collection boxes. A massive apology to those areas we didn’t visit but one night was cancelled due to ice on the ground (bet you’ve forgotten that very sharp cold snap that we experienced in the second week of the month). We also took the decision to cancel a static collection night at Tesco because we clashed with the splendid Taverham Band and we thought “too many cooks” or something. I was driving one night when the truck decided to die on the A1067 opposite Baldric Road and at 6:00pm this was the height of the rush hour. One community spirited “passer-by” volunteered to phone the police but a quick call to ex-Lion Roger Horn solved the problem and non-mechanically skilled John was able to proceed and allowed the X29 to continue its journey from the darkest interior into the city.

In the next edition, 30th January for March, I will be able to enlighten you on our plans for 2018.

Northern Distributor Road The latest section of the NDR is now open, up to the Wroxham Road.

It is very interesting as you see the aeroplanes either side of the road. The first section of road to open from the A1067 to Cromer Road has been a great success.

From Taverham to the Airport Park and Ride it takes 10 minutes! In March 2018 the NDR will open at Postwick. The next step is to get the Western link built. Then the traffic can get to the Southern Bypass, traffic through Taverham will also be improved. We will be supporting this.

TAVERHAM TABLE TENNIS CLUB In the Norwich & District League the ‘A’ team lies sixth after their victory over Wensum ‘F’ – Wayne Lubbock, Andrew Calver and Michael Connolly each won a brace and the doubles went Taverham’s way. It was a fine win, especially as Taverham were without their leading player, Steve Barrett.

Thankfully, Andrew Calver is showing signs of getting back to form and is in the Top Twenty in Premier ‘B’.

Meanwhile in Division 1, the ‘B’ team lies fourth although the strength of the Division is such that barely five points separates the teams in third and tenth places. Danny Atkins is really playing well at the moment and Jack Harrowing is playing better after a few matches under his belt. The team had a very good draw against pace-setters Foxwood ’F’.

In Division 2 Taverham has two teams, the ‘C’ and ‘D’. The ‘C’ lies fifth and is doing very nicely but we knew the ‘D’ would struggle following promotion last season. It is no surprise, therefore, that they are hovering just above the relegation zone. However, they continue to pick up points here and there and hopefully their endeavours will be rewarded as there is no lack of effort. Mike Littleboy is playing well for the team.

In Division 3 the ‘E’ team is currently in fourth position although it does have a couple of games in hand. The recent draw against the runaway Division leaders, County Council was a magnificent result, particularly as they did not win either of the doubles and so had to win five out of the remaining eight singles. Strengthened by the inclusion of Luke Edmunds (home for Christmas) the team of his brother Alex, Lewis Ross and James Austen delivered the games, everyone contributing, none more so than the youngest player, Alex who won both his singles. Hopefully (that word again) they will be able to climb a little higher in the Division to challenge for promotion as the League moves into the second half of the Table Tennis season.

The Club has some Handicap Cup matches coming up soon. The ‘B’ has got to the Final for the past two years but it would be a big ask to expect another appearance. Watch this space, as they say.

Writing this on the eve of the New Year for the February newsletter isn't easy! I should by rights be wishing all readers a Happy healthy New Year but a month of 2018 will have passed before you see the good wishes! Equally talk of the success of the Christmas dinner with top class entertainment provided by soprano Hayley Moss and Scot C Mitchell will be a fading memory.

So, January and the trip to the World Bowls championship at Potters will have happened and bowlers who attended will have been putting any tips learnt into practice! That takes us into February and how could I not mention Roger’s Valentine’s quiz due to be held on Friday 9th at 7pm??! Friday the 28th will see a 'random triples' competition.

In the County Leagues the Ladies B team had a heavy fixture list of 5 matches listed for January. February will see them compete against North Walsham at home on the 3rd and Woodlands on the 10th with an away fixture on the 15th at Shotford before finishing the month with a home game on 24th against Diss. In contrast the Ladies A team only had 2 matches in January whilst February sees them at home v. Woodlands on the 3rd and then two away games against Lynnsport and Gallow B. The Men's A team had two away matches in January followed by a home match on the 10th v. Woodlands and two away matches on the following two Saturdays. Finally the men's B Team having completed 3 matches in January will play away at the Brecks on 3rd February and home against Dereham on the 24th.

VALE PROBUS CLUB I thought I would give the recipe for quick microwave meringues. These have a different texture to oven meringues but if you are in a hurry, these are just the thing…….only 2 ingredients and hardly any equipment!

‘It Must Be Lovely to be a Vet’ The irony in the title gave us a clue. Our speaker left us in no doubt that, while there may be times when ‘it must be lovely to be a vet’, the conviction can wear thin when lying in a field delivering a calf in the middle of a cold night, with just one warm arm.

Roger Clarke regaled us with tales of the unexpected. How he had mugged up on goats in readiness for the annual dinner of the GOAT club, where he expected to be outnumbered by goat experts, only to find that he was speaking to the members of the Golf On A Thursday club. How he had attended a farm where the farmer’s wife was not impressed by the cow that had invaded her kitchen, and was leaving copious evidence of its unhappiness at being there. How he had grappled with the problem of locating the heart of an eighteen foot python.

So you will see that, in our January meeting of Vale Probus, after a tasty lunch we were served a double helping of dessert: Roger Clarke is both an experienced vet and an experienced after-dinner speaker. He called a halt at a suitable moment but it was clear that he could have gone on talking for a very long time. It was equally clear that we could have gone on listening for a very long time.

‘Vets’, said Roger, ‘are a funny lot but, mostly, don’t take themselves too seriously.’ Well, thank goodness for that.

QUICK MICROWAVE MERINGUES Ingredients 1 egg white 300g icing sugar Equipment 2 Large bowls Electric/Hand Whisk Metal spoon Greaseproof paper (cut a circle the same size as the turntable plate in your microwave.)

Cooling rack Method 1. Whisk the egg until it has just turned white.

2. Sieve the icing sugar into a second bowl.

3. Add the sugar gradually to the egg white until it is stiff enough to roll out.

4. Shape the mixture into small walnut size balls.

5. Place the greaseproof paper on to the turntable plate in your microwave 6. Place 5 balls of mixture evenly around the edge of the greaseproof paper 7. Cook on high power for 40 seconds (This might vary according to the strength of your microwave) 8. The meringues should be “exploded” and dry. If they seem moist, give them another 10 seconds.

9. Remove from the greaseproof paper and place on the cooling rack.

10. Repeat until all balls have been cooked.

Now have fun eating them with cream and fresh fruit. Yummm!

Joint Working with South Norfolk District Council; Broadland D C is continuing to look at opportunities of joint working with SNDC. No decision will be made unless there are real benefits to Broadland Tax payers, with due consideration for BDCs staff.

Joint Core Strategy Consultation. From the 18th January what is known as the REG 18 consultation will feed into the Local Plans of Norwich C C, SNDC and B D C. NCC and The Broads Authority are also involved in the production of this document. This will provide a blue print for development in Broadland or more importantly Taverham until 2036. During this period the three Planning Authorities will allocate additional sites to accommodate around 7200 homes. There will be a hierarchy of tiers of development. My view is that development should be spread PROPORTIONATELY around the Districts so that no specific area gets swamped with excess development disproportionate to existing Villages. This will allow real choice in housing, from affordable houses for rent, shared equity, starter homes to large family properties.

This consultation will be available on the GNDP’s and BDC’s websites or from BDC’s office. I will ensure availability at TPC’s office at Taverham Village Hall. I encourage residents to get involved, if you don’t I suspect the only responses will come from the large Corporate House Builders and their Land Agents. This is an opportunity for residents to get involved and influence the outcome. If you need any further information, please contact me or a fellow councillor.

Recycling Rates/Food Waste Bins; I am pleased to report that BDCs recycling rate for 2017 was 50+%, the highest in Norfolk and in the top 20% nationally. During 2018 BDC should be in a position to roll out Food Waste Bins to the remainder of Taverham.

Norfolk County Council Members’ Allowances; At NCC’s Full Council Meeting I voted AGAINST the proposal to raise members’ allowance by 11% on grounds of principal (I am on record as it was a recorded vote). Whilst I genuinely believe most councillors represent excellent value for money and work hard this certainly IS NOT the time to put up allowances by this amount as Council Tax is likely to rise. NCC has to make over £110m of savings over the next three years and projects have overrun Budgets and staff have only had a 1% annual rise since 2008 (although many are on the nationally agreed graduated pay spines).

Most families have seen a drop in disposable income. NCC still has a long way to go to improve both efficiency and productivity to ensure its finite resources are better spent to residents’ benefit.

Don’t hesitate to call or email me or one of my fellow councillors if you feel I can be of assistance in your dealings with either BDC or NCC. I am not part of the system; my role is to make the system work for ALL residents of Taverham.

We did not hold a Club night in January this year largely due to the cost of flowers. We shall be looking to our bright young demonstrator Tim Green to lift our spirits this month with ' Wedding Flowers ' What could be nicer in the February gloom than a look forward to hot summer days and June weddings. A date for your diary: we are planning a fish and chips evening on Saturday April 21st to raise funds for the Club. This is always a really fun filled occasion so set about creating your teams and join us, we welcome everyone.

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION The final meeting of 2017 was a really splendid get-together. The Village Hall was beautifully decorated and one of our members had volunteered to give our refreshments a “party” feel instead of just mince pies and coffee.

Members sat round tables set with plates of various savouries and drinks of mulled wine or apple juice. While members enjoyed this, we listened to our guest speaker Mrs Julia StaffordAllen explaining the history of the National Open Garden Scheme started, in a way, by Henry VIII who was very proud of his garden at Hampton Court.

This was the trend of the aristocracy for many years, not as it is today (the gentry didn’t provide homemade cakes, as is the practice nowadays). Eventually, members of the public were invited to the many gardens open during the year, now raising money for the nursing profession. To finish off our meeting we did have mince pies and tea or coffee. It was a very memorable evening.

This month our meeting will take place on the 6th February, when Kathy Gray will be informing us about Norfolk Plant Heritage, usual time and place, 7:30pm in Drayton Village Hall. We always welcome visitors and new members.

Our Annual General Meeting will form part of our March meeting.
