Our regular Coffee, Cake and Chat mornings are proving very popular with lots of regulars and new people coming each time. It is lovely to see so many new friendships being formed in a relaxing atmosphere.

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month from 10:00 am until 12 noon in the Old Hall at Taverham Village Hall, with our Christmas morning session is on 18th December.

The mild sunny Autumn weather perhaps caused fewer than normal to venture inside and visit our indoor car boot in October but given the smiles on some leaving they found some excellent bargains at this well-known event raising much needed funds towards the refurbishment of the main ladies toilet facility and redecoration of the disabled and gents toilets. A special thank you to the fundraising committee and their family and friends for their support in setting up, clearing away and cleaning ready for the next hirer, it is greatly appreciated.

During a recent Health and Safety check the inspector stated that the Village Hall is maintained to an extremely high standard and we should all be very proud of having such a facility, please help us keep it that way.

Our recent Halloween morning was enjoyed by all with our ‘witches’ fundraising team serving the refreshments.

On behalf of the Taverham Village Hall Committee I wish all our hirers, visitors and residents of Taverham a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

I can remember when we had a club membership of 39 and now we are at exactly a third of that number but we are still keen to support various charities, organisations and various individuals. There is really no glamour to being a Lion but I guess our small band of 13 get pleasure from knowing that we are helping someone. Recent years we have supported the Taverham Day Care Centre with their Christmas lunch and we are repeating that again for both the Tuesday and Thursday clubs. Many of their members are at home when we travel the area with the Christmas float and grown-ups can be like “little children” being excited by a visit from Santa and they are very generous with their donations, so in advance thank-you very much and enjoy your Christmas lunch.

It has already been reported that the Lions were established 100 years ago and one of the international organisations targets was to vaccinate 100 million children against measles and so far 80 million have been vaccinated. Therefore at a recent club’s welfare committee meeting it was agreed that we would make a donation towards reaching that goal and as mentioned in previous newsletters we think that the community in Taverham and Thorpe Marriott will support us with this decision. You may think I am labouring this point but as a club we are very conscious that it is your money and though we give more money to the local area there are some international requests that can’t be ignored.

Stella Newstead of the Taverham Village Hall fundraising team said “I would like to thank Tesco Drayton and in particular Lisa, Tesco Community Champion, for her help and support”. Stella was delighted with the amount raised at the Tesco Drayton Community Book Stall, stating that, the entire Taverham Village Hall fundraising team had worked hard to maintain the high levels of stock available to Tesco customers who in turn were very supportive raising an incredible £662·51 towards the refurbishment of the main ladies toilet facilities at the Village Hall.

If you spot two boys picking up litter, particularly on a Saturday, there is a good chance that it is Connor Grainger aged 11 and Liam Rothwell aged 9. These two friends love to keep the environment tidy and have been trying to keep the area, particularly around the Skate Park in Thorpe Marriott, litter free. They are setting an example to others and fully deserve to be recognised for the effort they have put in especially as this is something they have done entirely on their own without any outside input.

These days, by the time one arrives at the beginning of December the focus on Christmas celebrations has been in full swing for several weeks. It would have been no great surprise if Father Christmas had turned up at a Hallowe’en Party to the sound of sleigh bells. A proposal to ban any mention of Christmas prior to Remembrance Sunday would surely command overwhelming support.

Of course November 11th this year marked the Centenary of the Armistice ending the Great War. The Band was privileged to perform an imaginative and poignant programme of music celebratory and commemorative, interwoven with recordings of WW2 wartime Churchillian speeches, and reminders that 2018 also marked the Centenary of the Royal Air Force on a number of occasions. Our participation in the Remembrance Day service was the culmination of a very special period of national and local recognition of our history and shared experience.

If April was the cruellest month for the poet, December is certainly the busiest for the Band as we embark on a series of concerts, 12 at the last count, up to and including Christmas Eve. Tickets are selling fast for our popular Village Hall concerts on 14th/15th – book now to avoid disappointment. It won’t all stop there. In January 2019 the Band will be recording a new CD under the auspices of an experienced professional recording company which will be available (at a remarkably favourable price) at our Spring Concert. An ideal present for Easter!

Last Chance for PANTO TICKETS As you read this New Taverham Players are in their final dress rehearsals for this year’s NTP Pantomime “Dick Whittington”, which they will be performing at the Taverham Village Hall between Monday 3rd and Saturday 8th December.

The cast is ready, the costumes have had their fitting, make up is on (some haven't taken it off from last year), and the stage is set. So if you STILL haven't bought your tickets then this is your last chance.

Performances are 7:30pm nightly Monday through Friday, with the Saturday performances at 12:30 pm and 5:00 pm. Tickets are priced at £10 (£8 concessions) and are available by calling Chris or Julie on 01603 424313 between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm.

December - a busy time for all. The demand for warm winter woollies is huge. We are busy producing children's hats, mittens and scarves for the Shoebox appeal, adult hats scarves and gloves for New Routes, a Norwich based charity for refugees and, of course, the homeless. The need is great at home and abroad so all hand knitted items are put to good use whether it's a square to contribute to a blanket or a full size sweater.

Our fundraising event at The Wool Loft, Christchurch Centre, Magdalen Road had as its theme 'The Magic of Giving'. As always we rely on generous donations of wool to keep us going.

TAVERHAM WI Sadly our October speaker was taken ill at the last minutes so yet again we had to call on our own talents to reorganize the meeting. Earlier in the week a small group of members went to the Sainsbury Centre to see the ‘The Art of Light’, an exhibition of wonderful glass art by Brian Clark, so Sue Beavor gave a detailed feedback to the rest of the membership this was followed by our own glass artist Frances Sanderson Bates giving a demonstration of her own work and in so doing gained some commissions, well done both Sue and Frances for stepping in at the eleventh hour.

As we come to the close of our Celebratory year we look back on many successful events which our members have supported and enjoyed. Next year’s programme is already planned but as a committee we are looking forward to having a ‘normal’ year, which does not mean we will cease having fun just a bit lower key to preserve our sanity.

The finale for Taverham WI’s 60th year is an event at St Edmund’s church on Saturday 8th December at 2:00 pm where we invite you to join us to celebrate the friendship and support that is the Women’s Institute.

Christmas Chocolate Christmas Cake (cooked on the hob) This cake recipe is easy to follow since it is fully prepared on the hob in a saucepan. No oven needed!

Ingredients: 110g digestive biscuits, 50g butter, 1x10ml golden syrup, 50g drinking chocolate, 10g sultanas, 10g cherries (chopped), 150g dark chocolate, 1 mug icing sugar, Water.

Method: 1. Crush the biscuits in a bowl with a rolling pin.

2. Melt the butter and golden syrup in a saucepan.

3. Stir continuously and take off the heat when all the butter has melted.

4. Add the drinking chocolate and then stir in the sultanas and cherries.

5. Now add the crushed biscuits and stir until the biscuits are fully coated.

6. Press into a foil dish and chill in the fridge.

7. Break up the chocolate and melt it in a bowl.

8. Now pour the chocolate over the cake and smooth it flat using a palette knife.

9. Place the cake back in the fridge to cool and set.

10. Put the icing sugar in a bowl and add water (start with one teaspoon) and stir to make the icing to a dropping consistency (Just drops off the back off the spoon when held above the bowl).

11. If possible pipe Christmas stars or holly leaves on to the chocolate base. If not, cut star and holly shapes (stencils) out of some greaseproof paper and with a pastry brush, brush the icing over the stencils

We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7:30pm till approx. 9:30pm in The Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, and we meet regularly for lunch at Wensum Valley Hotel on the Thursday of the following week.

FRIENDS of NIGHTINGALE SCHOOL The Friends have had a busy half term fundraising. We held a cake sale and Halloween themed tombola at the school, which the children and parents supported amazingly. Thank you for all the cake donations! They went down a treat. In October, we also held our annual quiz and chips night which was a really fun evening and once again raised some more funds for the school.

We are now preparing for our Christmas Fair which is being held on Thursday 6th December, 3:15-5:15, at the school. The children will be getting involved by making Christmas decorations to sell. We can’t wait to see them!!

The children also have been getting into the Christmas spirit by designing Christmas cards for their families.

Local residents attended a packed meeting at the Village Hall in September to voice their concerns about the negative impact one of the proposed sites between Taverham Road and Macks Lane (GNLP 2051) would have on our community. Attendees to the meeting discussed the detrimental environmental impact the proposed development would have so close to the River Wensum and expressed their fears that building a number of houses on the 1·3 hectare site would set a precedent for further development along this popular lane, which is currently a muchused and loved social amenity for dog walkers, walkers and the local community.

NORWICH WESTERN LINK In early November, Norfolk County Council published four potential route options for a Norwich Western Link, to connect the western end of Broadland Northway (formerly the Northern Distributor Road) to the A47. The Council wants to improve travel between these two major roads and to tackle the transport problems that exist in the area to the west of Norwich, including slow journey times, rat running and roads not being suitable for the volume and type of traffic.

The four routes have been published following months of work to identify which options would be most effective as a Norwich Western Link. The shortlisted options were also informed by the results of an initial Norwich Western Link consultation which was held earlier this year. This consultation had more than 1,700 responses and showed there was very strong support for creating a new link between the A47 and Broadland Northway, with the majority of those responding suggesting a new road as their preferred solution.

The shortlist is made up of three new dual carriageway roads and a single carriageway upgrade to the B1535, and all of the options also include improvements to the A1067 Fakenham Road.

A public consultation on these routes will run until Friday 18 January 2019. During the consultation, people will be asked for their views on the options and these responses will help the council identify a preferred option for a Norwich Western Link in spring 2019. The consultation is also an opportunity to tell the council about any relevant information they should consider before deciding on a preferred route.

People can find out more about the options and respond to the consultation online via www.norfolk.gov.uk/nwl from Monday 26 November. People can also respond in person, and ask any questions they may have, at a series of staffed consultation events taking place throughout the consultation period. Many thanks to all who attended our sixth Annual General Meeting on the 17th October and to my fellow committee members for their individual reports presented to over thirty “Friends” of the Taverham History Society. That is without doubt an amazing level of support for an AGM. The society continues to have a sound financial base not only through good cost control but also by the superb support of our events achieving record levels of income which is much appreciated and necessary to enable us to continue to invest in new equipment to preserve the past but to also provide the level of activity enjoyed by everyone and, all achieved without the need to charge a membership fee.

As Chairman, I thanked my fellow committee members not only for their personal financial support but their investment of time, commitment and dedication to ensure continued success.

The iconic red telephone box and immediate area on The Street has just undergone a refurbishment and is ready for our occupation as a mini heritage centre, we will now commence our work very soon.

Our complete programme of events for 2019 has been printed and will be available for you to take away and update your diaries at our first presentation on 20th February 2019 when Mary Fewster will present the “Norwich Pleasure Gardens” we look forward to seeing you.

We all felt for John Flowerdew as we realised that his speaker had not appeared by the start time – this was a President’s worst nightmare!

However, Costessey Park’s owner Larry Rowe most generously stepped into the breach with a virtuoso account of the story of Costessey Park itself, its involvement with the high drama of the Tudor Royals, its glory days, sad end and its transformation into modern New Costessey. In fact so well had Larry warmed to talking about his life’s passion that when he remarked “I think your speaker’s walking in now” there was even some sense of anti-climax!

However, things got even better as Alistair Murphy of Cromer Museum developed his subject. This was the outstanding photographer Olive Edis. She made her home in Sheringham and became sought out by the great and good of Edwardian and inter-war Britain, from Shackleton and Henry Blogg to Edward VIII. Drawing on his ongoing Lottery-funded research on her work, he used a host of her compelling images to reveal her greatness in capturing a whole social history as well as the soul of her subjects – in spite of enormously cumbersome equipment. Many of us also were spell-bound by Alistair’s lucid explanations of Olive’s technical achievements (like pre-1914 colour pictures and a remote control trigger) and the story of her pioneering progress, matching that of the Suffragettes, in achieving official recognition in the man’s world of war photography. We could see why Alistair felt so fervently that she should be numbered among the 20th Century greats.

So thanks for that, Alistair, and extra-special appreciation to Larry for turning a potential crisis into a double bill!

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7.30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10pm. There is no extra membership fee; entrance is £6 at the door.

Phil Tuesday October 30th – Phil Brown hadn’t been to our club since 2011 so it was good to welcome him again and listen to his newly up-dated Bohm electronic organ, the Excellence 300, looking impressive in white – the organ that is, not Phil.

There was a superb variety of music which Phil had chosen to play for us and as he pointed out, these modern keyboards don’t just have a wide variety of different types of organ voicings but can also be turned into an orchestra, with a vast array of authentic sounding instruments at the player’s fingertips.

The tempo of the evening ranged from slow ballads such as James Last’s Lonely Shepherd - a very full arrangement played with pan flute, beautiful strings and guitar, Scottish songs featuring the bagpipe, Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez this time with a most realistic Spanish guitar, Ballad Pour Adeleine, orchestrally voiced Oh My Beloved Father, Roses From the South and Waltz Number 2 and on through jaunty 60s and 70s tunes, an Abba medley, marches, fast sambas and Circus Renz.

The audience showed their appreciation not just with their enthusiastic applause but also by buying up most of Phil’s CDs he had brought with him. Hopefully his next visit won’t be such a long wait!

We don’t have a meeting in December; our next concert will be on Tuesday January 29th 2019 when we have David Last making his 2nd visit to us. More details in next month’s magazine.

POLICE NOTES Hi everyone firstly I hopefully everyone is well. I was at a meeting recently where it was mentioned that there has been an increased level of Rogue Trader type incidents in the county, by this I mean extortionate amounts being charged to fix gutters, tidy gardens, sharpen tools, remove rubbish etc. If anyone is in doubt about any trader then decline their work, get their details including telephone number, record any vehicles, including index and get a description of the person themselves and pass their details to me via email: armstrongd@norfolk.pnn.police.uk or Operationrandall@norfolk.pnn.police.uk I will check to see if they are known by the Constabulary but, please be aware this is not a check on their workmanship, just a check to ensure they are not known to us as Rogue Traders. Also consider that many genuine tradesmen need to go door to door advertising their work. Remember if it looks too good to be true then it’s usually not right or if you get an uneasy feeling then go with that feeling and avoid at all costs. If you have an elderly or vulnerable neighbour or friend, please keep an eye out on any work they are having done. It may sound obvious but the longer darker nights increases the opportunity for theft, we tend to go indoors at dark and don’t come out, unless we have reason to, until daylight.

However, in doing so it means that there are fewer eyes to watch out for suspicious activity and this heightens the opportunity for criminals. Please continue to report suspicious activity either via 101 or 999 if it is still in progress.

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION “The Weeding of the 5,000 with Two Hoes and Five Wishes” - a rather strange title which is why we had a large audience in October. Our speaker was Jaime Blake who introduced himself as the head gardener of Bressingham Hall, home of the late Alan Bloom. With the help of excerpts from a video we were able to see and hear Alan Bloom himself.

Many of us had visited the gardens which were immaculate and we could see the changes of machinery – no longer using edging shears around the borders – replaced by a large cutting machine with a sit–on driver. Jamie explained the title of his talk. The 5000 referred to the number of plants in the garden (approximately), the two hoes was one for him, the other for his wife and the five wishes included (1) rain – at night (2) sun but not too hot (3) strength to do all the heavy work – a most enjoyable evening.

Included in our meeting was the presentation of awards to the winners of the Autumn Show in September. Alan Bagnall swept the board with his magnificent entries, but was beaten in one class by his wife Moira. Other winners included Gordon Coe, Cyril Davies, Gilbert Wright, Joyce Sharpin and Arthur Dickerson. To round off the awards Alan was awarded the Banksian Medal, one of the highest awards granted by the Royal Horticultural Society, for dedication to horticulture.

On December 4th we have a return visit by Charlotte Philcox explaining the three “Ws”, Wellingtons and namely “Workers, Wheelbarrows”. As always we welcome visitors and new members to the last meeting of the year (what a strange one it has been!).

Tec Carol Service (‘the Christmas story’) th

Our Carol Service this year is on Sunday 9 December, 6:00pm at Taverham Village Hall. As always there will be plenty of opportunity to sing your favourite Carols and enjoy seasonal refreshments. You and your family/friends are warmly invited to come along and join in the festivities.

All through December we will be looking at the Christmas story, it is the most wonderful and amazing story there has ever been.

Christmas comes just once a year; make sure you don’t miss the importance of it!
