JANET LATCHFORD

2017 National Parish Magazine Awards

Janet was awarded the ‘Special Heart of the Community Award’ by Broadland District Council in October. Janet has been both Chairman (for 19 years) and Vice Chairman of Taverham Parish Council. Over the years she has been involved in getting grants for Taverham Village Hall and Hinks Meadow and has raised funds for the Village Hall, running several stalls and indoor table events. She has also worked for the Taverham Fair, washing thousands of toys to sell to raise money. As well as this she has also painted walls and scrubbed floors in the Village Hall. She has said she is going to take things easy but now she is on the New Airport Committee. Well done Janet! Cllr Claudette Bannock

Out of over 410 entries your magazine achieved 9th place in the A4 Category. We were up against all colour and non-self-funded magazines as the Newsletter is. This represents a great result. We would not have been able to do this without the fantastic support we receive from all our volunteers and, in particular, our contributors who provide all editorial as we do not go looking for articles. When using Marriott's Way Cyclists who approach from behind at speed and, maybe in numbers, often fail to give warning to walkers (with or without dogs) ahead of them. This is a serious accident waiting to happen. What steps are being taken locally to raise awareness amongst cyclist and cycle clubs so all users of the Marriott's Way may use it in safety? On a personal note I have encountered this behaviour every day when walking my dog. This is a common complaint when talking with other users. Alan Dean

IMPORTANT NOTICE Reminder

It is with regret that the Newsletter Committee has had to take the following decision. We will not be able to deliver to those roads NOT in the Parish of Taverham after the end of 2017 due to the increasing cost of paper, thus printing costs, and reduced advertising revenue. The roads affected are: Ashgrove, Bramble Close, Costessey Road, Foxwood Close, John Gale Court, Judges Gardens, Long Dale, Priorswood, Riverdene Mews, Rook Drive, Suters Drive, The Thicket, Walsingham Drive and Winners Walk. This is not a decision we have taken lightly but we could not sustain the number of copies printed without losing money. However, please remember that the Newsletter can be accessed online at www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk and we will try to increase the number of copies available at the library and Taverham Village Hall.

Dear Sir, I loved the giant horse and it brought a smile and pleasure every time I passed it! I eagerly anticipated where it would appear next. Reading the article in the Just magazine, I congratulate the artist on giving us a different perspective to our surroundings for no apparent reason! What next? Yours, Jean Matthews

Just to let you know, that this horse, that keeps moving around, is something to do with an animal charity (don't know which one) and it is to commemorate all the horses that lost their lives during the war. There is a plaque on the trailer apparently, which obviously you cannot read as you are going by in the car, which tells you about it. That is all I know, hope this helps. Sheila, in Thorpe Marriott.

Beech Avenue: The Taverham Recreation Facilities site

taverham village hall news www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com

Many will know that the site next to Taverham High School is leased from the Parish by Taverham Recreation Faculties (TRF) who manage the site for recreation and leisure and work in partnership with the school, which has daytime access to the facilities. In recent months a few issues have arisen to which we would like to draw parishioners’ attention 1. The site is a dog free area. However, some members of the public seem to be ignoring this in relation to dog waste. There is a large bin at the BMX track entrance for users of the track to place their litter. However, we are concerned that it is regularly full of dog waste bags. We have spoken to The Parish Council who shares our concern and, together, we wish to remind dog walkers that there are suitable bins for dog use at the end of Beech Avenue and on Somerset Way. Please can all dog walkers NOT use the bin on TRF land - it is not fair on the people responsible for emptying the black bin and on users of the BMX area. 2. The astro surfaces behind the Pavilion are for school use, hockey club use and private bookings only. They should not be used by members of the public at any time unless a booking has been made with the Site Manager. The surfaces are expensive to maintain and we would remind the public that unauthorised use of the surfaces is classed as trespassing. 3. The BMX track is always open in daytime hours and all who would like to are encouraged to use it. Thank you very much for your consideration. Mrs Elizabeth Plater, Chair of TRF

Fewer than normal attended our indoor car boot in October but I am sure those attending found some excellent bargains at our well known event raising much needed funds towards the refurbishment of the Bedford Room. A special thank you to the fundraising committee and their family and friends for their support, it is greatly appreciated. Are you considering making a New Year resolution and might possibly think of raising funds for something everyone in the local community can enjoy? Then why not consider helping the Village Hall fundraising team. We are looking for anyone willing to provide and execute ideas for events and activities. You will see at first hand and take pride in the results of your good work as the facilities continue to improve. Please contact me through our secretary, Mikaela Thaxton on 01603 869316 to find out more about how you can make a difference. Now is the time to start planning your new venture, hobby or family gathering in 2018 then why not think of booking the Taverham Village Hall as with such a choice of quality facilities at amazing value, we must have a room to suit your needs. On behalf of the Taverham Village Hall Committee I wish all our hirers, visitors and residents of Taverham a very Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. Bill Warnes, Chairman, Taverham Village Hall Committee

TUESDAY FRIENDSHIP CLUB

TAVERHAM VILLAGE HALL COMMITTEE 101 CLUB OCTOBER WINNER: NO 94– MRS L. JEFFRIES

It is with great regret that the Tuesday Friendship Club will come to an end on Tuesday 12th December. The club started in the 1950’s under the name of The Senior Residents. In those days membership was 100 members with a waiting list to join, sadly now we have about 40 members on our books. When Carole Grothier passed away this year the heart went out of the club. Carole held many roles within the club including chairman. Our members are now, with the exception of two in their 70’s and 80’s and really do not feel able to take on the responsibility. It is something we regret has to happen and it has been a hard and difficult decision to make. With that I would like to thank everyone who has supported the club over the years. Stella

For further details please call Christine on 860075

MESSAGE FROM THE FUND RAISING COMMITTEE Dear Everyone, We are the venerable members of the Taverham Village Hall Fundraising Committee. We are looking for people who have bright and new ideas to join us to help maintain the Village Hall. We try to make it fun and enjoyable while simultaneously benefitting the Village Hall. If you would like to join us or know more please contact Susan (860394), Stella (260819) or Janet (868298). 5

NEW TAVERHAM PLAYERS

TAVERHAM FAYRE

We had a good turnout for the AGM and stallholders on the 9th November and thank all those who took the time and trouble to come along and participate in the lively discussions. All agreed the 2017 Hawaiian Fayre was our most successful to date, everything was in our favour. Fine weather, colourful stalls, lots of happy visitors supported by great entertainment in the arena. Many stallholders reported it was a successful day with several having sold out of stock. A number of thought provoking ideas were discussed which will help us all to stage an even better Fayre for 2018. The committee are still actively looking for someone with the drive and enthusiasm to Chair the committee and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how together, we can build on our past success and develop for the future. If you would like to join this dedicated team of volunteers please let us know using the contact details below. The 2018 “Swinging 60’s” Taverham Fayre will be held on the 30th June, 11am – 4pm. The committee continues to recognize that some small local groups may find it difficult to afford a stall and offer the price of £10 for a 3 metre stall (about the size of a standard gazebo) which is much lower than catering and commercial group fees and given the considerable number of visitors attending, offers superb value. For information regarding a stall please email taverhamfayre.stallholders@gmail.com Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter. Bill Warnes, Committee member

Cinderella: At the time of writing we are just a few weeks away from opening night and by the time you read this Cinderella will have been to the ball a few times and perhaps even met her prince! There might be time to grab a return ticket and see the show before we close on Saturday 2nd December. Why not give the box office a call on 01603 424313 and treat you and your family to an early Christmas present of pantomime magic? Our House: You will remember my clue from last month. NTP has secured the rights to stage this musical comedy in May. Featuring many songs made famous by Madness this show will be full of fun, energy and charm. It’s too early to talk tickets at this stage but we are inviting performers to take part in the show. Are you 13 or over and up for joining The House of Fun? You’ll be assured a great welcome so don’t be shy, come and join us. We welcome seasoned performers up for auditioning for lead and cameo roles as well as newcomers wanting the chance to be part of this fab show. A read through of the script and audition pieces will be on Monday 4th December with auditions on Thursday 7th and Monday 11th. Casting and reading will be held on Thursday 14th. We meet at Taverham Village Hall, 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Contact Tracy Melton for further information on 869317. Fancy being part of the Our House Band? Give Tracy a call and have a chat. If you would like to be part of the backstage/production team, please come along and say hello. Our House is being staged 14th to 19th May but now is the time to get involved. New Taverham Players thank everyone for their continued support. The Village Hall and regular hirers who accommodate our shows and you our audience who allow us to continue doing what we love. Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. Steven Melton

It’s the time of year for Father Christmas to take his uniform to the dry cleaners, the reindeers to the Vet for their annual injections, and to stock up on presents (and a few raffle prizes). For the Band, as soon as the Village Hall stage been dismantled after two highly successful autumn concerts out comes the Christmas repertoire, the Carol books are dusted down (and in some cases sellotaped together) and preparations are underway for a hectic schedule of seasonal concerts. The solemnity of the Remembrance Day concert and Service precedes a hectic schedule involving (at the last count) some 13 engagements up to and including Christmas Eve. Tickets are selling fast for our popular Taverham Village Hall Christmas concerts on 15th & 16th December, and our popular Candlelit Carol Concert at St. Edmund’s Church on Tuesday 19th December, so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. Finally on behalf of Taverham Band may I thank everyone for their continued support and wish you a very Merry Christmas! th

Many thanks to Tesco Drayton who generously provided all the ingredients for the evening’s menu, which were enjoyed by all. Also thanks to the parents who stayed and helped to supervise the Cubs with their cooking activity, and helped with the tidying up… A great deal of work has been carried out maintaining the grounds at the HQ in Taverham. A big thanks to all those who helped. Our fireworks night is about to be held as we write so will report back next month! We still need more adult support in the Group to enable us to provide activities for the children in Taverham and Thorpe Marriott. Please contact us to find out more. And finally, a very merry Christmas and happy new year to all readers and supporters. Ian Colman MBE, Chairman

Year 2 students at Nightingale have become some of the first humans to make contact with a friendly alien that crashed into the school site. Nirak has also asked the children to share more about the wide range of animals and plants that we share our Earth home with. To do this children have written fact files, poems and filmed short videos. The children have followed the journey of Tim Peake, a British astronaut. Will they one day board a rocket for outer space themselves? This has led to conversations around our school value of ‘aspire’. It’s been a great topic! So until we next update the village of Taverham about the latest ‘buzz’ the children from Year 2 are experiencing, we would just like to say one thing: ‘To infinity and beyond!’

converting it into a “mini heritage centre”. More will be announced next year. The Society continues to make good progress which is only made possible through the much appreciated help and support from you all. On behalf of the History Society, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Christmas along with a prosperous and above all healthy New Year. We shall continue to keep you all up to date with our events and activities in this column throughout 2018. Our first event in the New Year is on Wednesday, 21st February, when Rachel Duffield will bring to life Edith Cavell, more details next month but please note in your diaries now. For future events, news and information, why not take a look at our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com or contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman

An idea to think about over the Christmas break Early potatoes freshly lifted in the first week of May are one of the delights of gardening. Starting the first week of January it’s off to the garden centre to buy the seed potatoes. Choose an early variety with a waxy texture. Place them in the light and warmth to produce a strong apical chit. (Check after one week you have them the right way up). I use egg trays in the conservatory with a low energy light bulb on a timer for 24 hour light. Plant the seed the first week of February in black plastic buckets (holes drilled for drainage). I use the flower tubs sold off by supermarkets. Fill the buckets in three equal sections. Bottom mix - potting compost with 1 cup of dried poultry manure pellets and one teaspoon of Sulphate of potash. Middle layer - potting compost and 3 seed potatoes. You are aiming to have five strong stems. Ensure the potatoes are well covered. Water and leave in the light and warmth. Once shoots start growing top up the remaining section to within 2cm of the top with potting compost. Move the potatoes into a frost-free greenhouse or cold frame. A simple in line thermostat and a fan heater will do the job. When the sun shines move the buckets out into the best position for photosynthesis. This also hardens off the plants. Move them back at night to protect from frost. All this walking is good for your fitness and appetite! They can stay out once the threat of frost has passed. Lift the buckets to assess the need for watering. As the tubers develop the watering will increase dramatically. Harvest for the first Sunday in May Merry Christmas from TALGA. Mike Raw

TAVERHAM WI

www.taverham-wi.co.uk The final day of September is the end of the financial year for the WI which means that the accounts have to be examined and annual reports written to be presented to our Annual Meeting in November before they are sent to the Norfolk Federation and onto National. This is a period when our year’s work is remembered and memories of the mostly good and a few sad times are shared. Happily I can report that the accounts passed muster and the reports written. At the Annual meeting the committee for the forthcoming year is elected to carry on the work that this year’s committee has already planned, as next year is Taverham WI’s 60th year there is much to look forward to. More of that in January’s article. At our October meeting Peter Lawrence gave a presentation on his life in the Met Police from the 60s in the Leyton Area, his time dealing with diplomatic security when he covered and advised on the siege at the Libyan Embassy among other things. He gave an insight into electricity gas and water facilities beneath public buildings in London used by security officers. He had pictures of London from the 60s which certainly evoked memories of that era. As there is much celebration before Christmas elsewhere we traditionally look forward to our January meeting to party but that does not mean that the December meeting is dull as there is always entertainment and very special Christmas cake. Taverham WI wishes the Newsletter Editorial Team, deliverers, contributors and readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Peaceful 2018. Gina Clapson, taverhamwi@yahoo.co.uk

If you are interested in an Allotment plot and are a resident of Taverham contact Bernie at a.collingsworth60@btinternet.com, through our website www.talga.org or drop into the Parish Council Office.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

Many thanks to all who attended our fifth Annual General Meeting on the 18th October and to my fellow committee members for their individual reports. Whilst the society has a sound financial base the need for good cost control is understood and enables the purchase of much needed equipment and, more importantly, to provide the considerable choice and variety of events you all clearly enjoy. And, not just for 2018 but also the following year demonstrating our commitment to bringing you the very best of interesting historical facts, all without the need to charge a membership fee. We are also working with Taverham Parish Council to preserve the iconic red telephone box on The Street 11

www.roundwood-bowls.co.uk As of end October the newly promoted Roundwood 'A' Team has played and lost 2 games in Division 2 of the Men's County League whilst Martin Livie's top rink (28-13) helped Roundwood B to 2nd place (on shot difference only) in Division 5. Roundwood Ladies B team has played 4 matches, won 1 and lost 3 in the Premier League whilst the Ladies A team has played 2, won 1 and lost 1 in the North League. In the Egham competition the Roundwood mixed Team beat Woodlands by 3 blocks to 1 and now face Norfolk Bowls Club in the next round. The Bonus Ball competition has been re-introduced to raise funds to purchase a wheelchair for the use of any members currently restricted from playing bowls by physical difficulties. Ably administered by Sue Hunter the first winner was Maggie Hoffman who very kindly donated her winnings back to the fund. Thanks Maggie! Meanwhile the Christmas Squares Raffle will be in full swing by the time this goes to print and hopefully some quality prizes will tempt members and casual visitors to part with their new £1 coins to help boost the contribution promised by the Social Club towards the new underlay and carpet turning scheduled for the spring. Tickets for the Christmas Dinner are now on sale to members and their guests. The entertainment this year will be the singer Hayley Moss with music for dancing provided by Aces High. By popular request Roger will be doing a Christmas Quiz on Friday 8th December. Christmas jumpers will be encouraged!! Finally £78 was raised for Wear it Pink Cancer Charity from a raffle and more of Wendy's delicious cakes for which many thanks. Pam Bassham, 01603 744786

Taverham Veterinary Practice, Fir Covert Rd, Taverham, Norwich, NR8 6HT, Tel: 01603 867330

My case of the month is the handsome Edward, 13 years old. He presented with a red swollen eye in September and was diagnosed as suffering from glaucoma. This is where the pressure within the eye increases causing discomfort and rapid loss of sight. The condition can be primary or secondary to problems such as cataract formation. Edward’s glaucoma was suspected to have been caused by a small tumour at the back of the eye involving the optic nerve and causing inflammation within the eye. One of the big challenges as a vet and as an owner is trying to assess how a pet is feeling and what is the most appropriate treatment. In Edward’s case special eye drops were used to try and control the pressure but this was unsuccessful and the eye remained red and swollen. Edward appeared to show little outward signs of pain. However, we know that for humans glaucoma is very painful so I advised that the eye should be removed. This was a big decision for the family to take but Edward’s surgery went well and I was very pleased to hear that immediately the eye was removed Edward became a much happier dog again. It was clear that the pain from his eye had really affected his quality of life. I have treated many one eyed patients over the years and would say that without exception they have all become accustomed to the single eye very quickly and it does not seem to have held them back in anyway. I have actually treated a number of completely blind animals due to conditions such as bilateral glaucoma and again many of these adapt really well to the loss of their sight. We have now performed more than 1000 keyhole (“laparoscopic”) bitch spays since we introduced the technique. The majority of our dog spays are now done this way and an increasing number of pet owners are selecting this method for neutering their bitches due to the reduced post operative discomfort and lower risk of complications. TAVERHAM DAY CENTRE

Members are looking forward to our Christmas celebrations. We are grateful for the generous donation from Taverham Lions club which contributes the cost of the Christmas lunches. We thank the local companies, including Pratts, Wensum Valley Hotel, Drayton pharmacy, Drayton Tesco and Drayton Insurance that have donated prizes to our Christmas raffle. The centre will close for the Christmas break on Thursday14th December and reopen on Thursday 4th January 2018. The photograph was taken at a recent visit of the singing group We Are Three. If you can help us or, if we can help you, please phone 01603 865839 on Tuesday or Thursday, or 01603 412809 at any time. Brian Wells, Chair 13

Drayton Post Office Still going strong  New postmaster  Same location, different entrance  Huge range of greetings cards, helium balloons, gift lines  Big improvements to store  Extra foreign currencies now available on demand  ID Photos, banking, Passport checking Drayton Post Office has been inside Drayton Stores on The Fakenham road for many years but when the owners wanted to retire, its future looked uncertain. In August Drayton Post Office acquired a new Postmaster Neal Gurney, who also runs Thunder Lane Post Office in Norwich and four other branches across East Anglia. “The Post Office is still a valued service and with the improvements and efficiencies we’ve made it can remain in the community as a sustainable business” said Neal. The branch at 4 Fakenham Road, Drayton looks totally different from the outside as the front of the property is now occupied by Domino’s Pizza. The Post Office is still at the same location but with access at the side entrance. Improvements have also been made throughout the store to make it more modern with an improved retail layout. Since Neal took over the Drayton branch he has expanded and improved the range of greetings cards and is introducing more giftware and kids toys in to the shop. “We’ve managed to retain all the existing Post Office staff, they do such a fantastic job!” he added. The branch is open from 9:00am - 5:30pm Monday to Saturday offering all Post Office services including foreign currency, passport checking and ID photos. Customers with almost every high street bank can also withdraw and deposit cash and cheques there.

TAVERHAM and DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

TRINITY CHURCH CENTRE THORPE MARRIOTT

I can remember when we had a club membership of 39 and now we are at exactly a third of that number but we are still keen to support various charities, organisations and various individuals. There is really no glamour to being a Lion but I guess our small band of 13 gets pleasure from knowing that we are helping someone. Recent years we have supported the Taverham Day Care Centre with their Christmas lunch and we are repeating that again for both the Tuesday and Thursday clubs. Many of their members are at home when we travel the area with the Christmas float and grown-ups can be like “little children” excited by a visit from Santa and they are very generous with their donations, so in advance thank you very much and enjoy your Christmas lunch. It has already been reported that the Lions were established 100 years ago and one of the international organisations targets was to vaccinate 100 million children against measles and so far 80 million have been vaccinated. Therefore at a recent club’s welfare committee meeting it was agreed that we would make a donation towards reaching that goal and as mentioned in previous newsletters we think that the community in Taverham & Thorpe Marriott will support us with this decision. You may think I am labouring this point but as a club we are very conscious that it is your money and though we give more money to the local area there are some international request that can’t be ignored. Lion John Paling

WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY

Tots2Teens activities in the winter holidays

Moss Taylor, talked to us about the History of Birding in North Norfolk. The first part he entitled the Age of Collecting as the birding interest was largely based on rare birds being shot and preserved by taxidermy for people to collect. Then the Age of Protection which began in Norfolk in 1926 when Sydney Long and a group of 11 friends purchased a wildfowling marsh of 435 acres at Cley and set up the first Wildlife Trust (known as Norfolk Naturalists Trust). In the early days, the reserve was just a reed bed observed from the East Bank, but in the 1960s the first hides were constructed. Moss then introduced some characters from the local birding scene including his hero, Richard Richardson who illustrated the two most important books of the day – the Collins Guides to British Birds and to Birds’ Nests and Eggs. Moss concluded his talk by expressing his concerns that despite all the support for conservation there were still many man-made threats to bird species. On a September field trip to Burham Overy Dunes, we walked along the sea wall, where the highlight was a family of Bearded Tits that repeatedly called and rose high above the reed bed delighting us all. On the sea were Brent Geese, Gannets and Sandwich Terns. There was a selection of waders on the shoreline, including a group of Grey Plover, some of which were still showing their more glamorous summer plumage. The search for migrants in the dunes was hard going but at last we found a single Wheatear. At RSPB Titchwell in the afternoon we had the pleasure of watching a beautiful Hobby hunting in the near distance. Another highlight was a late Reed Warbler and the final count of species was a very respectable 77. Future events: Indoor meetings on Thursday evenings at Great Witchingham Village Hall, Lenwade, at 7:30pm. All are welcome (£2 for non-members); 16th November – Winter Birding in Japan by James Lowen. 14th December – Christmas social Field trips: Saturday 25th November – Blakeney and Stiffkey

VALE PROBUS CLUB

Sing Out for Christmas!

Is your newsletter delivered by a barbershopper? It might be! Norwich Harmony is a women's barbershop chorus which meets weekly to sing four-part acappella music ranging from 1930s American standards to modern pop to Christmas carols. Norwich Harmony frequently runs open singing courses for ladies who are interested in having a go, and Maureen, one of the Newsletter distribution team, went on the course in January 2015. There she discovered a big, happy family of cheerful, friendly women singers, and now she can barely remember how life was before that. "I didn't really imagine barbershop singing could be so beautiful, but what do I know!" she says. "Singing gives me an emotional response, it's empowering and enhances confidence. Everyone should give it a try. I am just sorry I did not discover NH before my 70s!" You can hear Norwich Harmony and their male counterparts, Fine City Chorus, in Dereham Memorial Hall at 7:30pm on Saturday 9th December, in a concert called Sing Out for Christmas! The programme will include the numbers from Norwich Harmony's recent entry in the national Ladies Barbershop Convention. If you are intrigued enough to want to give it a try yourself, there is a harmony workshop (women only) from 2:00-5:00pm that afternoon in the Memorial Hall. Buy tickets; Concert £8 (concessions £6), and workshop £10 (concessions £8) from www.ticketsource.co.uk/norwich-harmony or Bright and Beautiful Flowers in Dereham.

PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF? With a fresh patient to see every ten minutes, for each one of whom the GP has to be a sympathetic, all-knowing, computersavvy friend and counsellor regardless of what other demands are in her/his mind, it’s not surprising that stress, illness and drop-out levels are extremely high for our family doctors. Dr Maureen Tilford, our speaker this month, has had many years as a GP in Norwich and is now very much involved in working to help those with eating disorders and the use of clinical hypnosis, so she was well placed to share her thoughts on “How to Stay Sane in General Practice”, which was the title of her talk. With exemplary unflappableness in the face of some stress-inducing behaviour from her laptop, she made use of her grasp of several highpowered behaviour theories to show us in simple terms how GPs could cope better with stress, and the penny soon dropped that all this applied not just to them but also to all of us! I’m sure we all went away intending to put into practice some of her many gems of practical advice. Maureen’s experience has convinced her that hypnosis should have a much greater role to play in health care, and she struck several chords in her criticism (based on experience) of the damage that financial restraints have caused locally in the area of mental well-being. She even gave us a group taste of relaxation hypnosis before concluding – one member commenting that this was the first time a speaker had deliberately put us to sleep! The lengthy discussion afterwards brought out that the subject had touched the experience of many of us. Showing our appreciation, a retiring collection raised a total of £50 towards Maureen's charity Eating Matters, based in Norwich. Next month’s speaker will be our own Des King, who in an earlier life was someone’s “Man in Havana” 11.17 Chris Hurst

FACING IT TOGETHER

Looking out of the window on this wet and windy day thinking that’s another month gone by, I really must get myself into gear and think about Christmas. The club, for widows and widowers, is run fortnightly on Thursdays at Drayton Village Hall, 2:00-4:00 p.m. If you are lonely then please come along for a friendly chat and refreshments. Try your luck with our raffle and enjoy the entertainment, talks and day trips out. December meetings: 7th Monologue (Dennis Powell), 14th Christmas party (Bobby Graham). Come and give us a look. We have had several new members since September which is great and we hope that numbers continue to grow. Christmas seems a long way off but I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas. We will start the New Year on Thursday 4th January and I look forward hopefully of seeing some more new members. If you have any questions or would like more information about the club please give me a call, Maureen Madden, Chairperson. www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk

DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

Listeners to Radio Norfolk will recognise the name of one of their experts on the “Garden Party” programme on Saturday mornings, namely Richard Hobbs, who was our guest speaker in October. With the title of his slide show being “Bulbs for the Garden” he showed us not just the usual spring flowers, but included Nerines, Alliums and Irises which flower later in the year. There are many varieties of each of these plants, different sizes and colours, the Alliums also having spectacular seed heads. After a slight hiccup (Richard had to dash back home for his lap-top) the large audience had an enjoyable meeting. Our final meeting of the year takes place on December 5th – same time and venue, 7.30pm at Drayton Village Hall – when our guest will be Julia Stafford-Allen telling us what is required if we want to enter our own gardens in the National Garden Scheme, Julia being one of the County Organisers for Norfolk. Now is the time to start planning what to grow in readiness for our plant sale next May. There is not much we can normally do in our own gardens for the next couple of months, but we can start looking at seeds to grow in pots for the greenhouse, or divide our perennials. Whatever you do, let’s hope for good gardening weather in 2018. A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all, and remember we welcome visitors and new would-be members as we have a wide variety of speakers booked. Any questions please telephone me. Marjorie Bunn – 867837

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment by top professional organists from around the country. Starting at 7·30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and it finishes at 10pm. No extra membership fee, just £6 at the door.

Tuesday 31st October well, it may have been Halloween but there was nothing scary about Ian House as he played through his programme. Yamaha’s brand new keyboard – Genos - had been unveiled live to the public for the first time in the UK just the previous weekend and Ian had only had a few hours to prepare for its first UK organ club concert. Ian has an easy way with his audience and he certainly had us on his side so despite him feeling a bit cautious at the start, everything went without a hitch and we all enjoyed the fantastic sound of this latest keyboard from Yamaha, which has been 4 years in the making. Beginning with a lively Aquarius there were many more up-tempo numbers showcasing Ian’s playing and arranging skills including Lay Down Sally, Blaze Away, Buona Sera Senorita, Red River Valley and Tequila – this with audience participation (not involving drinking!). The slower quieter tunes were played with much feeling and gave us the chance to really appreciate the authentic timbres of the pianos, guitars, strings, saxes, flutes etc. especially during That’s All, played on solo sax, with an improvisation on vibes and finishing with lovely deep strings, also Ian accompanying live on piano the beautiful female voice singing Amazing Grace which he had recorded and stored within the keyboard. Ian was grinning from ear to ear by the second half and obviously enjoying himself as much as we were. Count Basie’s Shiny Stockings, Sugar Baby Love, Elizabethan Serenade and Karl Jenkins Benedictus from the Armed Man and an encore of Tico Tico played Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt style all contributed to a stunning memorable evening. No meeting in December so we would like to take this opportunity to wish our club members, visitors and all readers of our news here, a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Do come and join us, you will be very welcome. Check out our page on OrganFax http://www.organfax.co.uk/clubs/norwich/ Pam Barnard – Secretary 07786 445605

Stuart Clancy, County/District Councillor, Report NDR Update: By the time you read this the Western End will be open to the A140.The remainder will open by early spring 2018.Cross party members of NCCs EDT committee have instructed officers to challenge the main contractor with regard to cost overruns, which seems to be the norm with all major public sector contracts. In my view the quality these contracts need to be tendered in such a way that constant cost overruns should not be allowed within the terms of the contract, as this is an unacceptable burden on over stretched public finances and ultimately tax payers. Proposed Development in Taverham: Currently there are three possible major development proposals. These are a housing proposal on the Reepham Road side of Thorpe Marriott, which includes houses, community and educational facilities plus recreational and public open space. The other two are the re-application for a Supermarket (Lidl), Pub Diner and lifestyle building plus car parking on Fir Covert Road by the Garden Centre. The third major application is for the expansion of Wensum Valley Golf and Country Club to include additional facilities new rooms, gym and new swimming pool. It is vital for our area that these proposals are well planned and where possible transport/highway issues must be considered in a joined up and integrated way to avoid and reduce localized congestion. I would welcome your views. Western Link Project: Since my last report NCC members have given the project team the go-ahead and funded the next stage of the initial work on this vitally important project for our community. This would link the NDR with the A47 (something I have always strongly supported). I will be working very hard to deliver this road in a timely, cost effective and environmentally beneficial manor. It is pleasing that all surrounding Parishes with the exception of Easton support the principal and need for this vitally important transport link, there will now be a lot of work done to agree the most suitable route option. Taverham/Thorpe Marriott Bus Services: Although may people are happy with the existing bus services 28/29 and 30 I am aware that there are still important issues - routing, frequency and access still giving rise for concern. Through NCCs Public Transport Manager I am having further meetings with First Bus to try to get them to address these localized problems. As these are commercial services I have limited authority to change things but will do my best. I am also aware of ongoing location of Bus Stops issues. The most difficult being at the top of St Edmund’s Road where buses are sometimes unable to get through due to parked cars also causing problems for local residents. I will be engaging with all interested local parties to see if a workable solution or compromise can be found. Winter: As winter arrives I will be going round Taverham to check the yellow salt bins have been filled If a bin near your house is empty please contact me and I will ensure it is refilled ASAP. Please remember the salt is for Road and Path use, not your personal use. Dont forget if you have a neighbour who is either elderly or has a disability it would be nice if you were able to spread some salt on the Path and Road next to their house. Also should you, a neighbour or friend require additional help or advice during a cold snap contact BDC or one of your local councillors. Taverham Junior School: I am very pleased to report that work has commenced on the long overdue mobile classroom replacement programme which will provide 21st century accommodation for the pupils and a much better learning and teaching environment for children and teachers. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate to Janet Latchford who received Broadland D C’s highest award of Community Champion, at the Community at Heart’s Award Ceremony. On behalf of all of Taverham well done Janet, our community would be a much poorer place without all the hard voluntary work you have and still put into Taverham. Happy Christmas and a Healthy New Year to you all, Stuart Clancy 01603 754148 www.taverhamnewsletter.co.uk
