PLEASE REMEMBER WHEN DRIVING TO AND FROM YOUR HOMES THAT LABURNUM AVENUE IS A 20 MPH ZONE. In recent weeks 2 cats and a number of birds have been killed on our street, the latest being on Friday night. Not only is this an unpleasant end for pets and wildlife, it also causes immense distress for the families and children involved.

THE 20 MPH LIMIT IS IN PLACE TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN AND PETS. At 20mph, your stopping distance in dry weather is 12 METRES/40 FEET. At 30mph this distance is almost DOUBLED. SO PLEASE THINK, CONSIDER YOUR NEIGHBOURS AND STICK TO 20 MPH. NEXT TIME IT MAY BE A CHILD THAT IS KILLED.

St Peter’s Church, Ringland For many years St Peter’s Church in Ringland was joined with St Edmund’s in Taverham and the Taverham clergy took the services in Ringland and had pastoral responsibility for Ringland Parish.

That relationship ended in 2005. However, I am very pleased to announce that I have now been asked to assume Pastoral responsibility once again for Ringland. This means I and other members of the Ministry team at Taverham Church will be taking services and offering Pastoral support to Ringland Parish from now on. We are excited about this new arrangement and are looking forward to reestablishing the relationship that existed between our two churches and communities for many years.

Dear Editor, We recently posted the above notice through the door of every house on Laburnum Avenue. We hoped drivers would reduce their speed on our road and stick to the 20mph limit thus improving the quality of life in our neighbourhood.

To those people who have reduced their speed, we thank you so much for taking notice and helping to make our street a safer and more pleasant place to live.

To those drivers who have ignored our leaflet, we are still unable to let our children play on their roller skates, scooters and bikes on the pavement outside their own homes. This is because of your inconsiderate driving.

Research showed a 50% drop in the number of 6-11 year olds killed or seriously injured when a 30mph limit was reduced to 20mph (Department of Transport, 1999). If you hit a pedestrian at 20mph there is a 90% chance they will live. If you hit a pedestrian at 30mph there is a 50% they will die (RoSPA).

Please bear this in mind. Think about how you would feel if you hit a child and killed it or if it was your child or pet that was injured or killed.

Taverham Allotments (TALGA)

August is the time of year when all the work involved with the digging of soil, the sowing of crops and the hoeing out of weeds finally comes to fruition on the allotment. As with most things in life the rewards of owning an allotment are directly related to the input of effort. Our allotment community is composed of people of all ages and all stages of life from those with young families to those, like yours truly, who have joined the ranks of the old retired codgers. The different commitments that TALGA members have outside running their allotment obviously affect the time and effort they can put into it. The important thing is to enjoy the experience. It is good physical exercise, in my opinion better and cheaper than going to a gymnasium, it is also good for our mental state and there is good evidence that gardening can extend life expectancy. On top of these health benefits there is the additional pleasure of eating fresh vegetables and salads produced by our own efforts.

The summer growing season can be measured by the peak harvesting of the various crops that we grow. The first thing on my plot to be harvested is the garlic which was sown in the autumn last year and is now drying in my shed.

Other crops such as peas have past their best and are on the way out to be replaced by the beginning of the runner bean season.

Courgettes are in full production and need to be harvested almost daily to stop them turning into full blown marrows, unless of course you like to leave them to become marrows. The early root crops such as beetroot, carrots and turnips are swelling and can begin to be harvested, while potatoes have been harvested since the end of June if they are early varieties or left until late autumn if they are main crop types that can be stored for eating during the winter months. In addition to these vegetables there are the soft fruits, in particular strawberries and raspberries, both of which do particularly well in our allotments.

Each year all of us have crops that fail, but these are more than balanced by the successes and the hope that we can do better next year.

www.taverhamvillagehall.yolasite.com Many, many thanks to those fantastic volunteers who manned the Village Hall stall at the Fayre and who almost melted from the heat but had another successful day. The total from the stalls was £330∙31 and I thank all who were there helping (I was absent as I had a previous engagement!). Added to that the sale of tables inside the Hall raised £276∙00. So a total of over £600 went towards the refurbishment fund.

Thanks are also due to Vee Tebble for the Tombola and Terry Donaldson who let us two Gazebos.

August is a quiet month so now we await the results of the refurbishment which we hope will make the Hall not only more welcoming but also much easier to access.

Thanks to all for attending Nightingale's Summer BBQ We all had a fantastic time at this year’s BBQ, it was hard to top last year’s anniversary celebrations but we did it in style. There were all kinds of fun activities going on from football to crazy golf, bouncy castles, games and even a disco with Freddy the Disco Man. We were very privileged that Mrs Clarke’s daughter, Mel, the world No 1 Paralympic compound archer came to teach people archery in the SMOOGA. Arnold Msandivute a teacher from our partner school in Malawi was also in attendance as part of his cultural/educational exchange, he said he had an "exciting time".

It was also quite an emotional event due to the fact that it was Mrs Loughlin's last School BBQ as our head teacher, although the mood was lightened by some very funny Mrs Loughlin face masks (Mrs

Stephen Pope presented “RAF Swanton Morley” to another packed hall in June. Although most bases were built to a standard design what makes each one individual is the interesting people stationed there in addition to particular aircraft chosen for the special needs in the theatre of war or peacetime missions of reconnaissance, survival, rescue and policing. The serious nature of these activities are clear but human characteristics still provide elements of humour which Stephen delivered well to an appreciative audience of new and old “Friends”.

take such action but as Taverham Scout Group marks 50 years of Scouting in Taverham, it makes this even harder.

Many hundreds of boys and more recently girls have benefitted immensely from Scouting and it has played a massive impact on developing and shaping lives sticking to traditional values and mixing new and old activities from camping and cooking on fires, to digital media and latest technology.

Below is an extract from the letter to parents. If anyone aged 18 or over would like to join our leadership team and experience the fun and enjoyment of Scouting then please get in touch for a chat. Whilst we have leaders who help and support new recruits this is an ideal time to give some of YOUR time to the next generation……

“Dear Parents, As you may be aware, during 2014 and more actively during 2015 we have been advertising for additional help to support our Leadership team, especially the Cub Section.

There were two main reasons for us advertising for additional Leaders: 1. Scouting in Taverham is very popular and our waiting list has enough children on it to support two Cub Packs and an additional Beaver Colony 2. One of our experienced Cub Leaders, Dave has decided to step down from his current role.

Dave was aware of the impact his decision would have on the children and the Group so kindly agreed to stay on for a little longer to enable us to source support; this has ended up being six months longer than intentionally planned.

Unfortunately, and sadly for the children, all our advertising and discussions with those who made enquiries has not been successful. This has now placed us in a position in which a difficult decision has had to be made with regards to our Tuesday Cub Pack.

It is with regret that I am writing to inform you that, unless a suitable Leader is found between now and November, our Tuesday Cub Pack will be closing at the end of 2015. This decision has not been taken lightly as I am sure you will realise it will have a significant impact on our Beaver Colony and current waiting list.

For those children in Beavers the impact will be that a progression to Cubs will no longer be guaranteed. Our only remaining Cub Pack (Mondays) will not be able to provide places for all the youngsters who finish Beavers nor to any new children who arrive in the area of Cub age. Every effort is being made to accommodate as many children as possible and parents will be informed of places or changes to waiting lists during the remaining months of the current term.’’

Wastepaper: After many years of collecting newspapers for recycling, the Group no longer undertakes this with the falling prices and increased use of Grey bins. May we thank all those who have supported this fundraiser over the best part of 50 years!

Well summer is really here and all the units in Taverham District are making the most of the outdoors.

Taverham Rainbows have a foodie theme this term and are completing a “bake off challenge”; they have made edible mice, pizza faces. They have been exploring in Taverham Park, using compasses and opened up, for one night only, Rainbow Cafe when parents were invited in to sample what the rainbows had made! Delicious I am sure. Thorpe Marriott Rainbows have been completing “bake off badge” and made cakes, fairy rings and went on a treasure hunt to find fairies in the woods, did you see them? They are finishing off the term by visiting Taverham Mill with Drayton Rainbows, where they hope to explore the nature reserve and look for butterflies, dragonflies and bats. Drayton Rainbows have been completing their butterfly badge and have made butterfly kites, edible caterpillars and butterflies and been on a bug hunt. They are looking forward to their visit to Taverham Mill and will finish off the term with a party and say a sad farewell to Christine Marling who is retiring from guiding at the end of the term, we thank her for all the years she has given to guiding, especially to rainbows - she will be sorely missed!

Taverham Brownies have been completing their Traditions badge and visited Taverham Mill Nature Reserve. They have been on a treasure hunt and will end the term with a party.

All three guide units have also been outdoors this term and Thursday Guides and Wednesday Guides have been fire cooking and enjoying their favourite pizza wraps cooked on fires. Thorpe Marriott Guides are also fire cooking waffle cones, with their favourite ingredient chocolate!! They are travelling by bus into the city to complete the Go Go Dragon Trail and holding a Water Night when three new members who hope to join in September have been invited to see what we do at guides. Hope we do not put them off!! Friday Guides have been on a treasure hunt, water night and completed their animal active badge. We hope to attend Big Gig, which is a concert just for girl guiding, again this October with the guides at Wembley. We have also booked to go to Paris in October 2016, which we are all excited about as this will be a first for the District. So excitement is growing and we hope to fundraise during the next year to help with the cost of the trip.

Friday Senior Section has been planning a wide game for the Guide Camp in July and working on Look Wider Awards.

Thursday Senior Section hopes to re-open again in September with new members from Thursday Guides.

So an exciting time this term for all our units in Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton. We will then break for the summer and start again with more exciting programmes in September.

www.taverham-wi.co.uk One of the events to celebrate the WI Centenary year was a garden party at Buckingham Palace, Caroline Wilkinson and I were very privileged to go. On the train to London we met up with other WI members and we made a colourful spectacle as we hit the underground to make our way to the palace.

It has been an eventful spring on the nature reserve and fishery and finally it feels like we are getting some much needed sunshine. I’m starting to settle into life at Taverham Mill and I have been amazed at the amount of wildlife I have already seen during my short time in post. Lately we have been busy planning forthcoming events on the reserve.

Fishing on the mill’s lake has been productive and it has been great to see plenty of carp between 25-30lb slipping up early in the spring. We feel that the stocking over the last couple of years has really brought the lake back to life and got some of the older residents competing for food again. Every winter we will be making stockings of fish so we hope to develop the fishery further over the coming years.

The river season started with a bang and it was fantastic to see some June 16th magic on the river in the shape of lots of Chub to just over the 6lb mark. Our very own Richard Keeble even managed a 6lb Chub on the fly! Recently we have been excited to hear of some small Barbel being caught in the weir pool which bodes well for the future of the stretch.

We had some fantastic news recently with regard to our long term stocking policy. We are pleased to announce that we will be stocking the mills’ lake every winter starting with some more priory strain carp this year. In future years we will be stocking mixed coarse fish to sustain the diversity of angling on the mills’ lake. The future is looking bright and it is great to be part of it all.

8,000 women from all over England came together for a very special afternoon.

A party of us visited Wells next the Sea for a guided walk followed by lunch, all organised by the members of Wells WI. A very interesting day and we came home more knowledgeable of the history of Wells and very well fed.

Gill and Denis Whitehead kindly opened their garden again to us for a coffee morning - the sun shone and the bees buzzed in competition with our chat as we put the world to rights and raised a few pennies on the ‘bring and buy’.

As I write this article it is just a few days away from the Taverham Fayre - this year we will be selling home-made biscuits, plants and bric-à-brac and we are looking forward to having a good time no matter what the weather, we are also hopeful for our competition entry at the Norfolk Show.

Our programme for the next two months: August 14th Members’ Evening September 11th Ann Bridge ‘Flower Sellers’ We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7.30pm till approx. 9.30pm in Taverham Village Hall.

Dear Readers, Taverham Youth centre (behind the Taverham Village Hall) would like to inform you of our Junior Club’s recent activities and invite any new members to join us☺.

During June in addition usual facilities of a pool table, table tennis, Xbox, Wii and the tuck shop our members have participated in a prize Quiz, the making and eating of S’mores (biscuits), glass painting and modelling with edible chocolate play dough to make cookies.

Our most exciting news is that Callum Perry (one of our young volunteers) was the winner of the 2014 Bernard Mathews community award.

Callum has kindly chosen to donate a share of his prize money to the youth centre. After consulting with the members and staff it was decided that we should use the money to buy a set of 4 2-way radios. This will enable staff (adults and young people) to have direct contact with the lead worker and each other at all times.

The equipment has encouraged contact/chat between workers and therefore brought the team together in a practical and fun way. The staff team would like to thank Callum for his generosity and hard work☺.

Where would you find a Ninja Mutant Turtle, Alice in Wonderland and Vintage Tractors? At the Taverham Fayre, of course! On a scorching hot July day the playing field was buzzing with children’s laughter as they were kept amused by baton twirlers, a band and a Frozen sing-along. Plenty of local charities were there with stalls including tombolas and knock Humpty Dumpty off the wall. The Scouts provided a great BBQ and this was followed by ice cream.

Dougal, an 11 year old cat, presented a year ago with symptoms of vomiting and loss of appetite. A lump could be palpated in his abdomen and x-rays showed evidence of a chronic partial obstruction within his bowel. An ultrasound showed that the obstruction was due to a thickening of the large intestinal wall which was associated with the join to the small intestine - the ileocaecocolic junction. Samples were taken which suggested potential carcinoma of the bowel wall.

Dougal had exploratory surgery performed at Dick White Referrals and the abnormal piece of bowel was resected and the large intestine was rejoined to the small intestine. Dougal recovered well and has since had a course of chemotherapy to reduce further the chance of the tumour returning.

Chemotherapy is a very emotive word because of the immediate association with cancer treatment in humans. Veterinary chemotherapy is very different in that any potential side effects are kept to an absolute minimum. For our patients it is all about maintaining the quality of life for our veterinary patients rather than life at any cost. Advances in this area now mean than many cancers do have treatment options and particularly for conditions such as lymphoma treatment can be very rewarding and successful. This kind of treatment is certainly not appropriate for every case but Dougal is a good example of how successful cancer treatment can give our veterinary patients a lot of happy life they would otherwise not have had.

For anyone considering neutering their female dog don’t forget that key-hole surgery offers tremendous advantages to the patient. Like in human surgery this technique is much les traumatic and associated with a more comfortable recovery and far fewer complications than the routine methods. We perform key-hole surgery in dogs of any age over 7kg in weight.

So far this summer the Band hasn’t fared particularly well with the weather with (at the time of writing) 100% success in playing during rain! The sun, however, always seems to get out sometime during the performance!

June saw a great concert with the Façade Singers from the Ormiston Victory Academy with music from South Pacific, Jesus Christ Superstar and other hit numbers being performed with the Band.

Our next performance is at Chapelfield Bandstand at 3:00 pm on Sunday 9th August and we hope the weather will be better on this occasion!

Turning to the Autumn, our concerts at Taverham Village Hall will be held on Friday 16th & Saturday 17th October when we shall be playing a fantastic range of music including a tribute to Elvis who would be celebrating his 80th birthday this year and also to two iconic figures lost to the world of music in 2015, namely James Last and the film composer James Horner. Horner whose music has featured in the biggest screen blockbusters including ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ was tragically killed in a plane accident in June, just weeks after conducting his Titanic score at the Royal Albert Hall with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

We will be setting up when the library opens at 9:00 am and will be trading until 11:00 am so do come and see us there for those two weeks. DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION Your Local Gardening Club Adam Thurtle from the Environment Agency, our guest speaker in June, came to show us what work has to be done to keep the River Wensum in such a fine condition. It is no small 'work-place' meandering through the countryside from the west of Fakenham to just outside Norwich where it joins the River Yare. Being such a long river it is like working on the Forth bridge - no sooner has work finished at one end than it is back to the beginning again. Not only does the water need attention so also do the banks and river beds. We could see the results of the agency's work from the 'before and after' slides. We are lucky to have a small part of the river winding its way through Drayton, coming from Ryburgh down to Swanton Morley then on to Costessey, Hellesdon and Norwich. Along the way there are a number of Mills which can be visited by members of the public.

Pauline Harper is an expert when it comes to growing vegetables and is well-known on the Show Circuit for her prize-winning entries. She has been our guest several times in the past but as we have a number of new members we have invited her to come and pass on her tips and advice once again on how to achieve the same results as her, the date of her visit being August 4th at the Village Hall, 7:30 p.m. We know this will be an interesting evening do come and join us, everyone is welcome. With our Autumn Show being held in September members will be keen to see if they can pick up any useful information to help their entries.

Facing it together Hi, what a lovely day first day of Wimbledon, to write this report gives me chance to get out of the heat, shouldn’t grumble needed this weather to cheer us up.

Club business, 11th June was Bingo while some of us were enjoying ourselves in Benidorm, a lovely time was had by all, a little problem going but soon rectified and another on way home but these things happen sometimes, therefore a small number of members attended but I understand this was enjoyed. 25th June we enjoyed a talk by Derek Heffer about his life - very interesting.

August meetings: - 6th instead of Bingo we will be having a talk Jim hasn’t told me by whom. 13th is the outing to Skegness. 20th Pat James (singer).

3rd September is the AGM; nominations for Committee are required as a number of members have been in these positions for a number of years so maybe a few new faces could update the club.

Springfield Wood: Recently a great deal of vandalism has taken place in Springfield Wood. Most of the damage seems to take place after 9pm, even when it is dark. It costs tax-payers much money to keep this wood in tip top condition as it is a public space. Dogs have been fouling the footpaths; this should be picked up and put in the bin on the Fakenham Road.

When an emergency such as a power cut, flood or severe weather strikes it’s good to be prepared. The good news is that the Taverham community can boost its resilience by producing its own Community Emergency Plan and we can help you do it. You can still recycle your glass in your local bottle banks. This is an amazing achievement and I believe that with your help we can recycle even more!

Please ensure that your recyclables are loose in your recycling bin and not tied up in bags to make it easier to sort at the recycling facility.

A LOAD OF OLD RELICS! Not an insulting reference to our esteemed members, but what our talk was about this month.

Shirt-sleeves and strawberries and cream were the order on one of the hottest days of the year, our own John Rant was the speaker, and Pompeii his subject.

John’s presentation made excellent use of both humour and Powerpoint (with lots of animations and whizzy things). Having set the scene by showing us the location and how the erupting Vesuvius enveloped the city of unrestrained pleasure-seeking, he traced Pompeii’s story through its oblivion, 18 feet down, for many centuries to its rediscovery in the 1500s and main excavation in the 1800s. With many graphic photos he showed us how the victims’ forms had been preserved in volcanic ash at their moment of death and how Plaster of Paris was used to reveal them for us to marvel at.

We were taken on a “virtual tour” of the ruined city; with recent photos cunningly matched to reconstructions of how startlingly modern it looked in its prime. The brilliance of those ancient craftsmen was plain to see in the miraculously preserved paintings and sculptures and there was much poignancy in the frozen moments of everyday life.

John seemed a little nervous at introducing his final “X-rated” section about the notorious pictures, huge phallic sculptures, places of ill-repute such as the House of Vetti, and the origin of “worth your weight in gold”.

However, he was readily given the nod to proceed. To date no resulting apoplectic seizures have been reported, so he can assume we all took it in our stride!

All in all this was thoroughly enjoyable and an excellent example of information and entertainment in one package. Thank you, John - you thoroughly deserved your free lunch!

Drayton's commemoration of the 70th anniversary of VJ Day offers a full day of festive fun.

Organised by the Drayton Village Hall Committee the day starts with an exhibition of art and poetry mounted by the local children in the Village Hall in Pond Lane. This will be open to view from 1030 - 1230 when there will be fun and games for the children with a visit from Punch and Judy, refreshments and ice-cream.

From 1430 to 1600 the Hall will be open for you to enjoy tea and cakes with nostalgic music from Giovanni and his piano accordion.

The committee has made arrangements for free transport to the event for those who live in NR8 and have difficulty getting to the Hall, please ring 01603 864278 before the day, especially if you require a wheelchair access vehicle.

The evening features a Grand 40's style Carnival Dance from 2000, with a dancing instructor on hand to remind you of the steps. Or you can come along and listen to the music and enjoy the 1940s ambience and a drink from our licenced bar.

MODERN SEQUENCE DANCE CLUB Last month we featured in our programme the “Sweet Bay Salsa” which came out, I believe, in 2002 but I have not danced it since then. The foot actions are quite simple but the arm movements are a cause of much confusion and amusement. A certain “CR-H”, on Strictly Come Dancing coined the phrase “armology” and this is certainly an ology for which you should be armed. No matter which dance occasion you attend there are always about three different Waltzes, Quicksteps, Swings, Foxtrots and the like but hardly any Salsas. The same could be said for Sambas where the rhythm is really catchy but the interest does not exist. It’s not that the Latin and South American type dances are not popular for numerous Rumba and Cha Cha Cha dances are very much in demand. In fact one of the most popular of the recent new dances is the “Balentine Bossa Nova” for when that’s announced there is always a rush to get on the floor.

In the middle of June we introduced “Iris Saunter” which first appeared exactly two years ago. Irene and I intended to practice the dance before the afternoon began but instead had to spend half an hour clearing the mess left in the hall by previous hirers. (I hope they’re reading this!”). Not to worry though for we completed the walk through having never danced the dance before. Well done Irene.

Like so many dance clubs we are desperate to see new faces come through our doors. I’m sure there are many people, both singly and as couples, who would love to dance but see it as an embarrassing challenge. That is not true. The hardest and, perhaps embarrassing, part of joining a club is gaining the courage to take that first step into a hall. There are numerous local activities within all villages, many of which are featured within this newsletter and I am sure their organizers would be the first to welcome you and make you feel at home. We are no exception being just the ordinary folk you mingle with each day as you go about shopping. To walk through that hall door could give you a new interest and, as a person living alone, it may be life changing. Give it a try at any club or with us at the Costessey Centre any Friday afternoon at 2:00pm!

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment by top professional organists from around the country.

The evening starts at 7:30pm, an interval with refreshments and a raffle, and finishes at 10pm. There is no membership fee, just £6 at the door.

Tuesday 30th June Chris Powell and Brett Wales Despite being in the middle of a heatwave an enthusiastic audience filled the hall to near capacity in anticipation of our annual duet concert. With such high standards of professional musicality and dexterity on display, all interspersed with much frivolity and cheerful banter, it was always going to be a most enjoyable evening.

The pair had our complete attention from the opening duet which was followed by their individual short programmes - Chris with Buddy Holly and Glenn Miller medleys and a collection of tunes played theatre organ style, and Brett including Bohemian Rhapsody, Once Upon a Time in the West and Duelling Banjos. After closing the first half with an up-tempo big band rendition of ‘The Lady is a Tramp’ (dedicated to nobody in particular, they hastily added!) we were looking forward to the second half which was to be all duets.

The interval had given both of them a chance for a change of clothes so Chris in a purple jacket and black trousers and Brett in a yellow suit (yes, very yellow!) teamed with a black shirt they likened themselves to a couple of Teletubbies, causing much hilarity, and proceeded with The Radetzky March, a tribute to James Last, The Hall of the Mountain King and a swing version of The Blue Danube, to name a few. Finishing with a very impressive Pomp and Circumstance and a Dixie medley jam session there was no doubt that they both enjoyed complementing their individual styles.
