From the editor, I would like to remind readers that the Newsletter relies entirely on volunteers over 100 of them. Without whom there would be no Newsletter. I spent the last week of June in hospital following a heart attack. This meant that my wife was left to distribute/deliver our round of about 600 Newsletters on her own. Naturally they were a bit late going out but those she encountered were full of understanding and sympathy. However, one (unnamed) resident of Roedich Drive upset my wife by saying that the delivery on June 3 was late. I am extremely proud of our volunteers and clearly with the number we have there will be times when deliveries will appear to be late. Volunteers are allowed holidays or may have family problems. I would be grateful if you could remember this and perhaps we can avoid a similar situation. If you have a problem please get in touch with Eddie Garratt or me, details below.

Dear Editor,

This cute little zip-up purse was left behind by its owner when visiting the Neighbourhood Plan stall at the Taverham Fayre. It may have been bought (or perhaps won?) at another stall, because he looks brand new. If you have space to publish this photo, perhaps its owner will see it in the Newsletter and they can be reunited! Sandra Parkinson (01603 868722) sandra_tpc@hotmail.com

Have you travelled on the No 30 Bus yet? If not, please do! People in Taverham, Thorpe Marriott and Drayton are making good use of this new service. And there is fresh news of more stops! The service began in May. As far as we know it will continue if it has good use, so that’s where you come in! Local residents and Councillors Clancy and Adams, together with Jeff Anderson of Drayton Parish Council have been active in supporting this service in negotiations with Norfolk County Council and First Bus. A reminder of the route: Orchard Bank, Shakespeare Way, Taverham Road, along Sandy Lane and right onto the Fakenham Road, left into Windsor Chase, Kingswood Avenue, Pendlesham Rise, Longdale then School Road and onto Drayton High Road. The route takes you in a circle around Hellesdon and then into the city via Heigham Street, Bank Plain and Castle Meadow. The return journey starts at the same stop on Castle Meadow via Theatre Street, Grapes Hill, and back the same way thereafter. At the top of School Road and into Thorpe Marriott the bus goes along Drewray Drive and then the same route to Orchard Bank. Don’t forget that the first bus of the morning leaves Orchard Bank at 8:55am and you can use your bus pass here and at stops along the way before 9:30am! A real bonus! If you are not sure of the times visit Taverham Library to see a timetable or visit the First Bus website: https://www.firstgroup.com/norfolk-suffolk/routesand-maps/network-norwich/service-3030a We are now promised two new stops: near Hellesdon Barns garden centre and between the new Wickes Store at Turnpike Close and the Sweetbriar Retail Park and stops to bring you home! We hope that the signs will be up in the not too distant future so plan a trip to these delightful places and use the bus!

Taverham Neighbourhood Plan

Our open meeting in June and our stall at the Fayre in July have generated a fair bit of interest from and it will soon be time for our Working Party to hand over the reins to a Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group. We have already contacted those parishioners who have told us that they would like to play an active role in developing Taverham’s Neighbourhood Plan, and invited them to meet us, and each other, to learn about it in more depth and take the first steps towards making it happen. If you weren’t able to come along in June or July, you will be more than welcome to join us at Taverham Village Hall (Old Hall) on Wednesday 9th August, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there. Sandra Parkinson, Parish Councillor Editorial (Copy and letters): David Ross, e-mail: tavnews.editor@gmail.com (N.B. DESPAIR

taverham village hall news

An interestingly shaped mature sweet chestnut, probably 150 - 200 years old, has had long strips of bark removed from 80% of its circumference. Ring barking disrupts the movement of water and nutrients between the roots and top growth (sap flow) which can result in dieback or death of the affected tree. Any attempts at repair are likely to be unsuccessful because of the extent of the damage. Also people using this area, which we have attempted to fence off at times, show no respect for the wood. As well as the ring barking, young trees have been uprooted and the area littered with rubbish. Other people enjoy Ghost Hill Wood so this is very disheartening for those who work to maintain it. Judy Tyler, Woodland Volunteer, Taverham Parish Council.

Suite 1 Closed due to refurbishment. As you all know by now our project this year is the refurbishment of Suite 1 and the adjoining kitchen. This is quite an undertaking as the surface mounted wiring is to be concealed behind the newly plastered walls and ceilings which obviously have to dry properly before being decorated. The aim is for the work to commence on the 11th August and be completed by the 6th September. It is hoped the kitchen facilities will be completed sooner and available for use by Suite 2. Unfortunately some of our valued regular hirers will be affected during these improvements and I would ask you to please be flexible and patient. Mikaela Thaxton will contact groups offering alternative arrangements where possible with the aim of keeping cancellations to a minimum. On behalf of the Taverham Village Hall Committee, I apologize for any inconvenience caused. Taverham Fayre: our draw for Tesco Vouchers raised £946. Our thanks go to Wayne Leech, Manager of Tesco Drayton for supporting this fund raising event so generously with £200 worth of vouchers which were split £100, £50 and 2 x £25. Thanks also to Lisa Attowe, Community Champion for Tesco Drayton for drawing the winning tickets. The prize winners have been contacted! It was certainly a successful event and I would like to thank the fund raising team who along with family and friends manned our own stalls throughout the day. I would also like thank Brenda Clarke and her band of helpers who raised an amazing £466 in the Village Hall Tea Room aided by the many delicious cakes kindly baked and donated by our loyal supporters. Bringing the total raised in our Fayre campaign to an incredible £2,072 towards the above refurbishment. Bill Warnes, Chairman.

TUESDAY FRIENDSHIP CLUB. On the 13th June we had an inspiring talk given by Mervyn Ivan. Mervyn lost his sight at the age of eleven through having Measles. Although one of several brothers his mother did not treat him any differently and a quick shove and a “get out of the way “was normal for him. Mervyn was accompanied by his guide dog A.J. who he laughingly told us was the only one that would sleep through his talk, we had no trouble staying awake. June 27th saw a similar theme with Sally Moore who came with her dog Wispa, a trained for the hard of hearing dog. Sally was born deaf as her mother was in contact with German Measles before Sally was born. Wispa, a beautiful chocolate coloured Spaniel, is Sally’s third dog, her other dogs were Labradors. The club will meet on August 8th and Denise Amos will be showing us her flower arranging skills. On August 22nd is a scone making demo with Anita. We are still having our coach trip out and club members are now welcome to ring Carole on 868239 or Stella on 260819. Stella Newstead

The Cubs have been working towards their Pioneering, Athletics and Cyclist badges this term. They were enthused with edible knots using strawberry laces and chocolate fingers, creating a pioneering project and making boomerangs. They headed down to Halfords in Norwich where the Cubs learned about cycle safety, how to repair punctures and the pre-cycle ride 'M' check. Many thanks to Jasper from Halfords for running the evening for us. The Cubs also had the opportunity to demonstrate their sporting prowess with sprints, 1000m run, long and high jump, throwing, skipping etc. In addition they managed to run an evening of archery and rifle shooting. Many thanks for all the help from leaders, ex-scouts (home from university for their summer break) and some of the parents. The Cubs indicated at a recent #YouShape event (where scouts have their say to influence the scouting programme and its content), that they wanted more water based activities. So we are off to COWS (Cubs On Water Sunday) a district run activity at the end of the July. They will have the opportunity to get out on the water and try kayaking, open boats and rafting, as well as loads of water based games and fun. Ian Colman MBE, Chairman

www.roundwood-bowls.co.uk The Social Committee held its monthly meeting in the uncanny calm of the summer bowls migration to the outdoor rinks and players’ holidays to climes near and far..... The winter programme was pencilled in with dates for quizzes, bingo and social bowling events. These will all be confirmed in black and white when the composition of the winter leagues is known and thus the availability of the rinks on appropriate nights. Coaching continues throughout the summer and is the ideal time for aspiring bowlers to come and try their hand at the game. The cost is £3 per person for 7

TAVERHAM WI

www.taverham-wi.co.uk Thanks to an extension on deadline time (thank you David) I am able to report back on our stall at this year’s Taverham Fayre. After a week of grey, cold and on some days torrential rain we woke on Saturday to sunshine and blue skies.....yippee!....that meant that everything was going to be alright. After weeks of planning we were not going to be rained off. We decided this year to go for games for both young and the not so young. ‘Splat the Rat’ proved to be a challenge and I believe only one young man manage to catch ratty…well done! ‘Rolla Ball’ brought out the competitive side of many of the families visiting our stall where a prize for the highest or lowest score of the day was incentive for Mums, Dads and siblings to try to beat each other. ‘Treasure Island’, ‘Guess how many sweets in the jar’ and a traditional style raffle were also very popular. We all enjoyed wearing grass skirts and garlands….Hawaii was a brilliant theme and looking around the field we had lots of competition for best stall….sadly we never won but we had lots of fun trying. Our speaker in June was Harry Wayne-Barker from Taverham Mill Nature Reserve. Harry confessed that it was the first time he had done a talk and presentation of this kind and he was assisted by his fiancée who told us that she had heard him rehearse during the previous week. It was well worth the preparation because he was a delight to listen to and the slides certainly illustrated the work done at the reserve. Starting with a brief history of the old mill itself he went on to outline the conservation work that he and his co-worker and volunteers undertake and how the changes implemented by them on behalf of Anglia Water have made the reserve more accessible to visitors. We are very fortunate to have this on our doorstep if you have yet to visit I urge you to do so.

Snowy the labrador was just 12 weeks of age when he got himself into a bit of trouble after swallowing a large stick to stop his brother stealing it from him. His owners rushed over and removed what they could see but soon after he started vomiting his food and retching.

Under general anaesthesia a camera was passed down his oesophagus and the end of a long stick seen. Metal forceps were gently passed down alongside the gastroscope to grab the stick and remove all 24cm!! Amazingly no damage had been down to his stomach or oesophagus and Snowy made a quick recovery. This is a very unusual stick related problem. However, we do see fairly regular emergencies were dogs have been chasing sticks and have run onto the end of one. These injuries can be very serious causing damage to the back of the mouth and throat so although dogs love chasing sticks there are plenty of better designed toys to use instead which don’t have sharp ends! We are very pleased with our new RCVS accreditation as a Veterinary Hospital which has acknowledged the excellent standard of veterinary

Our speakers for the next three meetings: 11th August: Richard Matthew – Story of Dragon Hall 8th September: Rachel Duffield – Songs from the 1940s 13th October: Peter Lawrence – The Policeman’s Lot – Krays to Crown We meet on the second Friday evening of every month at 7:30pm till approx. 9:30pm in The Old Hall, Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane and we meet regularly for lunch at Wensum Golf Club, Beech Avenue on the Thursday of the following week.

More Junior Reporters at the Fayre “The weather was very sunny. There were lots of lovely stalls. I really enjoyed it.” Jasmine M (10) “The weather was sunny and it was well attended and there was lots of stalls that sold almost anything even a goat!” Jasmine F (10) “I really liked the Fayre it was fun. The variety was amazing; yummy hot dogs and burgers, and ice creams for nice refreshment. The bouncy castle and trampolines were good if you’re wishing for a bounce! The nice sunny day made it the best it could be.” Maddy T (10) “I think that it is better than last year but I think there could be more Fayre games like puzzle gams and chance games.” Alex M (12) “I think that this year was better than last year. I think Taverham Fayre is really good.” Hannah M (10) “It was decent.” Daniel (11) “Entering the Fayre I saw a line of stalls. The smoke slightly put me off as I came here for fresh air and not to mention the pumping music. But overall a good experience.” Gregor (12) This has been the best group of Junior Reporters since I became editor 6 years ago. Thank you for your contributions. David Ross, Editor.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY Your support of the Society just keeps on growing with huge numbers attending on June 21st, when Caroline Jarrold presented “The Jarrold Family – Norwich Entrepreneurs”. It was very interesting to hear that by listening to customer requirements and by adapting the needs of the business in order to compete in a very competitive market and through diversification, Jarrolds has survived for 250 years. She also explained how the very successful “John Jarrold Trust” supported a variety of good causes and that its income is derived from dividends received as a shareholder of Jarrold & Sons Ltd. Taverham Village Hall was 60 years old on the 22nd June. Back in 1957 the Chairman was Mr F.A. Evans, Vice-Chairman Mr K.J. Bird, Treasurer Mr A.E Brown and Minutes Secretary Mrs J.H.S. Rump. If you can remember attending the opening celebrations, have a story to tell or have some photographs you would be willing to share please contact us and it could be included in our next “Remember When” slide show for all to enjoy. Remember we have no history event in August but please make a note in your diary now for September 20th when Barbara Miller will present some historical facts about the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. For future events, news and information, why not take a look at our blog on, taverhamhistorysociety.wordpress.com or contact us by email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes, Chairman

District Councillors’ Report Man Hole Covers: recently we reported a noisy manhole cover on the Fakenham Road. It was reported three times to highways but nothing was done. It was very noisy when a vehicle went over it. At last we found out it was a BT cover which had sunk. Late June (in the heavy rain) the cover was raised and the residents are now having a peaceful time. Why Weight is a healthy way to lose weight with a 12 week weight management programme. This spring Broadland District Council held successful sessions in Spixworth and Thorpe St Andrew. It is looking for new towns and villages to hold these sessions. It costs £6 per session or £50 for the full 12 weeks. If you want to attend a ‘Why Weight’ programme, call Maria Hutson on 430570. Food Waste Recycling: Most Taverham residents now benefit from a weekly food waste collection. These are for leftover food. Food waste caddy liners are free. If you need more liners just leave a note on the caddy. For more information call 01603 430534. Recycling Grey Bin: It is very disappointing that about 10% of the contents in grey bins have to be rejected. The contents should be put loose in the bin - not in plastic bags. The operators cannot open the bags to see what is 11

NEW TAVERHAM PLAYERS

TAVERHAM FAYRE

We know that it is far too early to mention one “C” word but hope you’ll be pleased to hear about another! What has to be the all-time favourite pantomime, “Cinderella” is on its way to Taverham later in the year (a bit closer to the other “C” word). Our Fairy Godmother is already busy looking out for those important ingredients to make sure things

You were asked to make this the best Taverham Fayre to date and you did not disappoint with stallholders and visitors joining forces to create an outstanding family event that will last in memories for many years to come. The front page shows a snapshot of the many photos stored on our database and I hope provides a glimpse of what you all achieved. There are many family and friends of the Fayre Committee who gave their valuable time to plan, create and organize the day’s activities to whom we are truly grateful as without this support the Fayre would not have been such a huge success, well done and thank you all it is much appreciated. A particular thank you must go to PCSO Sarah McCue who had the most difficult task of judging the many activities, in particular, the children’s fancy dress parade. Sarah awarded the John Pelling Shield, for Best Dressed Stall, to the Taverham History Society and the revived award for Best Dressed Stallholders went to the New Taverham Players. Well done to both teams. Taverham Band performed to their usual high standard and everyone enjoyed the exceptional live performance from Joe Palmer with many purchasing his CD during the event. The choice of food available, including the tea room located in the Village Hall run by Brenda Clarke and her team to raise funds for the continued Hall refurbishments, was appreciated by everyone with all stalls reporting it was a great success. I could wax lyrical about the Fayre for pages which would not be appreciated by the editor but there is no doubting the fact that if you did not attend you missed a great family day and we hope to see you next year. Your Fayre Committee is already working on 2018’s Fayre and would welcome comments or ideas you would wish to put forward for consideration. Should you have an idea, wish to offer help or simply make contact, please email; TaverhamFayre@gmail.com Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter Bill Warnes, Committee member

Taverham Day Centre In recent newsletters we have said how much we appreciate the support given to us by local organisations. We have recently been awarded a generous grant from a national organisation, One Stop Carriers for Causes which is linked to the One Stop shop in Victoria Road. The initial grant request was made in March 2017 for money to help us hire a minibus for the members outing in April. A recent announcement was that we have been awarded a much larger grant that will allow us to greatly subsidise the next three outings for our members. The photograph was taken recently when Giovanni and David visited the day centre as part of our entertainment programme. For more information about the Day Centre please phone 01603 865839 on Tuesdays or Thursdays or 01603 412809 at any time. Visit our website www.taverhamdaycentre.org.uk Brian Wells, Chairman 13

A new Post Office, keeping its large range of cards and stationery, dry cleaning, passport photos and a new facility in the form of Domino’s Pizza. Jon and I went into partnership at Drayton Stores 25 years ago this November. Since then shopping habits have changed beyond recognition. So once where Drayton Stores stood alone as the Village Store we have had to adapt and now on the same site 4 vibrant independent businesses stand; a fantastic florist, an excellent estate agent, a progressive Post Office and a delicious Domino’s. The business of business is change, adapt and move forward or stand still and sink. May I sincerely thank you on behalf of Jon, myself and the staff for your custom, friendship and support over the years! Mark Curson and Jon Gallant Drayton Stores, 4 Fakenham Road, Drayton

TAVERHAM YOUTH CENTRE

Hello Readers, We hope you are enjoying the summer and getting the opportunity to spend extra time with family and friends. Unfortunately it has been very hard to get the news of the club to me in time for the deadline while I am on maternity leave. This will change in September when I fully return to delivering the clubs and I will be able to continue with our updates. The Friday club will re-open on September the 15th and we look forward to welcoming old and new members. We then NEED again to follow on with an appeal for YOUR HELP!!! We urgently require adult volunteers to assist in the staffing of the Tuesday youth club. We are staffed by a small team of volunteers with a professional youth worker to support and guide them. You can volunteer on a basis that suit you. There is no need for experience; just a positive attitude and willingness to be around young people. You would be fully supported, gain a DBS check and access to low cost and free training. The clubs’ opening times can be found on p 27. If you would like to get involved or any other details about our projects please contact Kerry at kjyouthwork@hotmail.co.uk or call/text on 07887 950002. Kerry Johnson

Fundraising in your local community for local causes

The team behind the scenes at this year’s BBQ’s. Taverham Lions have been busy over the summer months providing BBQ’s to raise monies for local schools, causes and events. This year we have been at Taverham Junior School raising money for school funds and their minibus appeal, Ghost Hill for school funds, Drayton Church fête, Taverham Fayre and other local events. For more information about Taverham Lions or to volunteer your services to help in the community visit the website at www.taverhamlions.weebly.com Follow us on facebook or to help us fundraise FREE with your online purchases visit easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/taverhamlions

DRAYTON STORES: A BIG THANK YOU Many of you will know that a lot has changed at Drayton Stores over the last couple of months. Unfortunately we had to call it a day as far as selling groceries was concerned. We had been swimming against the tide for a while. With regard to groceries, margins are low, staff, equipment and maintenance costs are high and coupled with wastage from sell by dates and the general aggressive competitiveness of the big supermarkets meant we had no choice. We tried to sell the business as going concern with little success and in the end decided to split the shop into two units. Jon and I have tried to maintain as many services as possible for the village. The Post Office was obviously the most important to protect, as was the delivery of newspapers. After a lot of hard work we now believe the village has sustainable businesses to go forward for many years. 15

VALE PROBUS CLUB A LOAD OF POO!

Roger vividly portrayed his story, as always, with telling slides, maps, statistics and clear technical explanations, and the discussion which followed showed the keen interest which his subject had aroused! Many thanks. Chris Hurst

….…Or, How the Sewers of Victorian London were Transformed Our own indefatigable Roger Morris was once again our speaker, having travelled hot-foot from foreign parts to be with us. His subject was the shamefully uncelebrated Joseph William Bazalgette, that prolifically brilliant civil engineer who should rank with the likes of Wren, Nash, Brunel, Stephenson, Pugin and Barry for his enduring impact on our capital city. Starting by setting the context for Bazalgette’s story, Roger explained that London’s “sewers” since Roman times had been just the natural open waterways which led down to the Thames, plus a few random additions, and the filth had been notorious for centuries. Rocketing population in the 1800s brought things to a crisis point by mid-century: the Thames was described as “nothing more than a cesspit” and by 1858 there had a decade of nauseous stenches and horrific cholera epidemics. When Parliament itself had to move because of the so-called “Great Stink”, the government at long last decided to do something about it and authorised millions of pounds expenditure! Enter Chief Engineer Joseph Bazalgette, who designed a new network of 1100 miles of interlinking street sewers leading to 82 miles of main sewer. This (built in brick and still in good order today) was laid on the North bank of the river and then built over to form the three Thames Embankments where today thousands stroll in ignorance of what lies beneath! Pumping stations then took the sewage to discharge downstream into the open estuary. This was spectacular engineering, and it was up and running in only 7 years. Even better, cholera virtually disappeared almost immediately! Not the least of his achievements is that he foresaw further population growth and so designed the sewers twice the size needed at the time hence, Bazalgette’s system is basically what still drains London today. The workaholic Joseph unsurprisingly suffered a number of nervous breakdowns, but maintained his prolific output well into his 70s, his projects including five Thames bridges, the Woolwich Ferry, four major London thoroughfares, and plans for the Blackwall Tunnel. Tower Bridge, that worldwide symbol of London, was also his idea. Yet so sadly, only one small memorial recognises his enormous achievement. Maybe for an epitaph we could misquote that of Wren to become “If you seek a memorial, look under your feet”.

Vale Probus Club, for retired Professional and Business Men, was founded in 1998. We meet monthly for lunch and a talk and some members also join together for other activities. DRAYTON HORTICULTURAL ASSOCIATION

THE NORWICH ELECTRONIC ORGAN & KEYBOARD CLUB

Halfway through the year, so the meeting in June also included the first section of our Summer Show. Tables were set out in front of the hall stage and members entered a variety of roses, flowering and foliage pot plants, a collection of five stems of different perennials, plus a plate of three different vegetables. This small show was once again well supported. After this our guest speaker was Paul Metcalf whose subject was ‘Bees’. He gave us an illustrated talk on the history of these busy little insects which have been on this earth for 41 million years – so we were told! We certainly had a ‘busy’ evening. The subject for our meeting on August 1st, at 7:30 in Drayton Village Hall, is ‘Fuchsias’ when Frank Lambert will pass on his knowledge about growing and looking after this colourful shrub. As usual, visitors and possible new members are welcome to our friendly club, which includes a raffle, refreshments and sometimes plants for sale. Any queries, please give me a ring. Marjorie Bunn, 867837

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at Drayton Village Hall, with entertainment from top professional organists from around the country. The evening starts at 7:30pm, there is an interval with refreshments and a raffle and it finishes at 10pm. There is no membership fee; entrance is £6 at the door. Tuesday 27th June Ryan Edwards with his Yamaha EL- 900 made the round trip from Worksop again to share his genuine enthusiasm and obvious love of good music from classical to modern and everything inbetween. From the opening Light Cavalry Overture to the ethereal and fiery Lord of the Dance finale each and every piece was expertly arranged and delivered with much TLC. A dixie-land version of Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It, beautiful pan-pipes and strings in James Last's Morning in Cornwall, the big classical organ sound of George Blackmore's Festal Day and a sudden change of mood to Glen Miller reeds and brass gave us an early taste of the diverse characteristic of Ryan's programme for the evening. This continued with George Fleury's Cocamba (a very rhythmical samba with a catchy bass pattern on the foot pedals), the haunting phrases of Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, Maple Leaf Rag, The Jellicoe Ball from Cats, The Raider's March, I Wanna Be Like You Kenny Ball style with a short drum interlude, the Carpenters’ Goodbye to Love with the famous guitar solo, Charlie Barnet's Skyliner, Nimrod and I Won't Send Roses. An encore of Nesson Dorma rounded off a lovely evening, which I'm sure suited all tastes judging from the remarks from the audience going out of the door at the end of the concert and left us hoping for yet another return visit. Tuesday August 29th Chiho Sunamoto and Jon Smith Two excellent organists who are a popular couple on the organ circuit and are now better known as Mr and Mrs Jon Smith! Their previous visits have been much appreciated, both individually and as a double act, so we’re looking forward to what surprises they have up their musical sleeves for us this time. Do come and join us for an evening of good musical entertainment with like-minded, friendly people, you will be very welcome. Pam Barnard, Secretary - 07786 445605

DRAYTON FLOWER CLUB The June meeting was a very warm one in every sense. The weather was especially warm and sultry; the demonstration of 'Floral Passion' by our friend Crystal Dyball was warmly welcomed by members, especially the passionate picnic of all red flowers in a picnic basket. Ladies, make a note of the following events for your enjoyment. Saturday September 16th at 2pm in Drayton Village Hall is the President's Tea Party. Come along and have a 'posh' tea with Eliza Doolittle from My Fair Lady. It should be very entertaining and great fun. Tickets £6. A must see event is the wonderful John Chennell and 'Seasonal Splendour' on Tuesday October 17th. Both these events are open to everyone, neighbours, husbands, friends and the curious. Do come and join us. Details of all club activities from Pam Bailey 867730 21

Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society Johnny Rankin is a keen birder from Suffolk who became aware the Turtle Dove was suffering a serious decline in numbers. We are lucky to be in the core area for these summer breeding birds, but even here numbers are decreasing, down 90-95%. Johnny invented Dove Step. Dove Step 1, 300 miles from RSPB Lakenheath Fen to RSPB Saltholme in Yorkshire, was a big undertaking for Johnny and his friends, who were not experienced walkers, but it paled into insignificance compared to the following two walks. Dove Step 2 connected Suffolk with the French/Spanish border. The sea was covered in sea kayaks. A 115 mile cycle ride in England was followed by a walk across France to the border with Spain. Johnny PJB had been following a similar route to Titan, the first Turtle Dove to be tagged. Dove Step 3 crossed Spain, South to North, crossing several mountain ranges. Johnny walked for 28 days, seeing plenty of Cranes, Larks, Vultures, etc. and some new birds like the Southern Grey Shrike. He averaged 25 miles a day. This amazing operation has raised over £12k so far for research on Turtle Doves, funding such l ROMAN things as 9 hectares of specially seeded habitat for them in this country, and research on the wintering grounds in Africa. Vine House Farm l ROLLER VERTICAL is situated in the heart of Deeping Fen. In May 25 of us were l greeted by Nicholas Watts, the fourth generation of his family to farm on l PERFECT FIT Deeping Fen. I do like to be beside the sea! As a Pentecostal church, we believe in the ‘baptism of believers’! That is to say, before you can be baptized, you must first of all have committed your life to Christ. The next step following that is to be baptized by full Immersion as a public witness. To that end Tec will be having a Beach Baptismal Service, at Mundesley, on 13th August 11:00 am. If you are able to come and enjoy the tropical Mundesley sunshine and also to worship with us, we would be pleased to see you. TEC normally meets every Sunday, 11:00 am at Taverham Village Hall, Sandy Lane, Taverham. For more information about church services, Life Groups, Children’s, Toddlers and Youth ministries, check out our web page, tec-church.com or email vic@tec-church.comTelephone: 01603 860192
