FROM THE COACH

Dear Newport Harbor Families and Friends,

With great honor and enthusiasm, I write to you as the Head Coach of Newport Harbor Football. Now entering my second year leading this storied program, I’m proud to say Newport Football is in a really good place—grounded in tradition, fueled by purpose, and moving forward with momentum.

It is a privilege to serve a program whose rich history and deep-rooted values have shaped both my coaching career and personal growth. As a student-athlete at Newport, I had the great fortune of playing for the legendary Coach Jeff Brinkley. After continuing my football journey at Wagner University, I returned to Davidson Field and served as an assistant under Coach Brinkley for 20 years. In that time, the values of integrity, hard work, honesty, and honor—along with an unshakable pride and love for this program—became the foundation of my character.

With the transition of Coach Lofthouse, stepping into this leadership role felt like a natural next step and a long-held dream fulfilled. As the 18th head coach—and only the second alumni to serve in this role—I am deeply committed to honoring our tradition while pushing our program to new heights.

As a teacher on campus, I care just as deeply about the kind of young men we are building as I do about the wins on the scoreboard. Our focus remains on developing athletes who are not only successful on the field, but also respectful, responsible, and resilient off of it.

Newport Football has always represented excellence. That legacy, built by generations of players known as the Long Grey Line, is something I hold with great respect. With new CIF alignments based on power rankings, we now compete in the Bravo Division—an exciting challenge that presents a tremendous opportunity to show what Newport Football is all about.

NEWPORT HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

Newport Harbor High School educates the whole person. This is made VERY CLEAR to me as a teacher and a coach by our school’s leader, Dr. Sean Boulton. Wins and losses on the field are second to effort in the classroom and character in the community.

In support of this mission, I have committed to Dr. Boulton that the football program will align to his (and the school’s) over-arching philosophy.

Dr. Sean Boulton’s Athletic Philosophy

n Playing with *neighborhood kids*

n Sharing athletes and resources with other coaches

n Strong character building

n Engaged with parents, community and teachers/administration

n Modern weight lifting and conditioning program

n Building pipeline for the future

n Zero tolerance drug, alcohol and vaping policy

n Best attendance and effort in the classroom

OUR FOOTBALL PHILOSOPHY

The tradition of the program speaks for itself. We create an environment based on discipline, hard work, and time management.

MEAN TOUGH PRIDE POISE

Team Philosophy

Everyone matters on this football team. Everyone on the team has ownership of the program. The camaraderie created here is second to none. From the top down, the goal is for each player to love their experience and know that they have built friendships that transcend way beyond the game itself.

Game Philosophy

n Play with great effort: Fanatical energy from snap to whistle and high-speed hitting.

n Attention to every detail of your assignment – Scheme, Technique, Rules.

n On every play believe that your job is critical to the outcome of the game

Community Philosophy

As a community we owe it to these young men to give them examples of how to act when faced with adversity. Core values of honesty, dedication, discipline, and time management will be traits that allow them to be successful in any avenue they pursue in the future. It’s not only football; it’s Life.

COACHES NEEDED

More than 50% of our football budget is for Coaches. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District has stipends for up to nine (9) coaches and those stipends range from $4,950.00 for the season (for the head coach) to $1,200.00 for the season (for position coaches).

Our needs, for the health of the program and the safety of the boys, is much greater than what these stipends offer.

We plan to have eighteen coaches in our

FROM THE COACH (CONTINUED)

One of my main goals is to continue reigniting the pride and passion that have always defined this program. With your support, we can continue building a culture where every player feels valued, every fan feels connected, and every Friday night reflects the spirit of our Newport Harbor community.

In return for your generosity, we will recognize your business or brand at games, on program materials, signage, and our website. We also provide a tax-deductible donation receipt or marketing invoice upon request.

Thank you for your continued support—or your newly interested consideration. Our program thrives because of the dedication of local businesses, alumni, families, and community members like you. I look forward to meeting each of you and working together to keep building something special.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions, comments, or ideas. My email is mburns@tarfootball.com.

Sincerely,
