Tonight’s matchup is a familiar one... Battle of the Bay is here again! It’s the most exciting time of the football season. Many of these kids have played against one another since “Pop Warner” (or Junior All American) years. This means neighborhood bragging rights are on the line.
There have been some epic battles between these two teams over the years, and last year’s game certainly didn’t disappoint. Our Sailors took the lead late in the game with the go-ahead touchdown from then-junior wide receiver Cade Fegel. Newport Harbor held on to win their first BOTB in 10 years. We are looking for another big win this year against Corona Del Mar, and as always, the outcome of this game has huge playoff implications for both teams. The Sailors have been playing some great football with strong leadership from their seniors and younger players stepping up in key positions as well. A win tonight would give us much-needed momentum as we head down the stretch and our final 3 games of the season on the road.
Thank you, students, parents, and fans for supporting the program. They players really fed off the energy (and so do the coaches). Thank you Dr. Boulton and administration and teachers. Football gets so much support at NHHS, so if you see a teacher or administrator, please be sure to thank them.

To all alumni, parents, and community supporters, welcome!
As we gear up for this year’s Battle of the Bay game between Newport Harbor High School and Corona del Mar High School, it’s essential to reflect on the legacy of this incredible rivalry. Last year, we broke a ten-year losing streak, and while that victory was deeply satisfying, we must look beyond the scoreboard when we consider what this game represents.
Both schools have been pillars of public education in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa for over fifty years, building strong academic, performing arts, and athletic programs. These two schools embody the excellence and spirit that define our community, and this rivalry, though competitive, is a celebration of all the hard work, dedication, and passion that students, coaches, community, school district, and parents pour into these programs.
As we move into the latter half of this decade, it’s important to acknowledge and appreciate the contributions of everyone who has helped shape this rivalry—both on and off the field. The commitment to excellence and the development of well-rounded individuals and future leaders, whether in academics, athletics, or the arts, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, coaches, and parents. Thank you.
Good luck to our Sailors, and let’s keep the Bay trophy where it belongs! As always.
—Go Sailors!
Sean Boulton, Principal
Welcome to one of the best rivalries in High school Athletics. As the sun sets over the scenic shores of Newport Beach, excitement fills the air as Newport Harbor High School (NHHS) prepares to take on Corona del Mar High School (CDM) in the highly anticipated annual Battle of the Bay. This rivalry, steeped in tradition and passion, promises to deliver yet another unforgettable chapter in high school football history.
Last year, the Sailors emerged victorious, continuing the trend of success in this storied matchup. With an overall winning record against CDM, the team is riding a wave of confidence as we head into this year’s clash. However, when it comes to this rivalry, past records often fade into the background; emotions run high, and anything can happen on game day. Coach Hettig and staff do an amazing job over at CDM and I’m excited to go toe to toe with them again. I have had the honor of both playing in this game and coaching this game and it is truly special to be a part of it. The Keys to Victory For NHHS are:
Intensity and Focus: we must channel our excitement into disciplined play. Staying composed and executing our game plan will be crucial.
Defensive Dominance: Stifling CDM’s offensive threats will be key. A strong performance from the defense can set the tone early.
Turnover Battle: we must win the turnover battle, we need to limit the opportunities they have to score and maximize each and every possession we have.
The Battle of the Bay is not just a game; it’s a celebration of our community spirit, fierce competition, and relentless pride in NHHS. Both teams will be fueled by the energy of the fans, with packed stands, painted faces and rally towels in vibrant school colors. This game has a way of bringing out the best in players, as both teams know the stakes are high—the coveted Bell Trophy is on the line. Newport Harbor currently leads the series 39-23. As kickoff approaches, one thing is certain: the team that plays with the most heart and determination will walk away with the Bell. Get ready for a night filled with unforgettable moments, incredible plays, and a rivalry that continues to shine as one of the best in high school sports.
Mean, Tough, Pride, Poise! Tarball!
-Coach Burns
By Christian Marsella
The Sailors delivered Coach Burns his first victory, and they did it in style on Homecoming night. The Sailors were seeking revenge against the St. Augustine Saints for the close loss the last time the teams met. The boys put the hurt on St. Augustine to come away with an impressive 28-7 win. Jake Meer commanded the offense throwing for 218 yards and three touchdowns while completing 84% of his passes. The Sailors executed a balanced offense with effective passing and running. Shane McKibbon and Cade Fegel were big receiving targets hauling in 10 of Jake’s passes for 90 yards. Sammy Stremick and Beckham Dutcher combined for three touchdowns including some highlight reel back of the end zone catches. Jackson Stremick delivered on the ground with 14 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown on top of 53 receiving yards. The Sailors’ defense came to play and held the Saints’ offense to a total of 138 yards. Cruz Marsella, Glenn Baranoski and Jaxon Smith combined for five tackles for loss. Jagger Denoon lit it up with back-to-back quarterback sacks. Solid tackling from the linebackers and great coverage from the backs and safeties were key in keeping the Saints scoreless until the last minute of the game. The Sailors looked dominant and poised in this 28-7 victory.
By Christian Marsella
The Sailors returned from their bye week to face off against the Tesoro Titans in an important league-opener. Both teams delivered intense performances in a game that is surely an instant classic that had the crowd on its feet until the last second. After a scoreless first quarter, the Titans found their rhythm and dominated the second quarter scoring 17 unanswered points. Newport Harbor started the second half down 17-0. Undeterred, the offense, defense and special teams came to life and ignited a comeback for the ages. The second half was full of electrifying plays from both teams and five lead changes. Jake Meer led the offense going 14 for 23 for 289 yards and had a crucial run with a roll out scamper to the end zone with one minute to go on the clock that would ultimately secure the win for the Sailors. Cade Fegel turned in a highlight reel performance that included a 91-yard kickoff return for a score, an interception, and four catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. Sammy Stremick was Jake’s other key target hauling in five catches for 91 yards. The run game delivered when it mattered with Glenn Baranoski and Ryker Budde running hard at the goal line to combine for two touchdowns. The Sailors defense was able to slow down Tesoro’s offense in the second half, allowing them only two touchdowns. Tony Glynn, Hudson Perez, Sammy Stremick, Glenn Baranoski combined for 20 solo tackles. Cruz Marsella and Davis Post each had solo tackles for loss. John Pena had a clutch quarterback sack. The Sailors outscored the Titans 34-14 in the second half and found themselves defending a last second field goal attempt for Tesoro to tie the game. With a miss by the Titans, the Sailors earned an exciting and hard fought victory with a score of 34-31.
