Dear Newport Harbor Families and Friends,
We are officially two games into the season, and I could not be more proud of the way our Sailors have competed so far. We currently stand at 1-1, with both games showing the grit, preparation, and heart that this program is built on.
Our season opener against Murrieta Mesa was a gut-wrenching loss, 33–27, decided in the final 30 seconds. While it was a tough way to start, our players showed tremendous resilience and fight to the very end. The following week, we bounced back in a big way during our home opener, earning a commanding 42–25 victory over an athletic Lancaster team. The hard work put in during the off-season is showing on the field, and our team is learning the importance of taking things one game at a time.
Compared to last season, this group has shown clear growth in discipline, execution, and confidence. The strides we’ve made in just one year are a credit to the dedication of our players, coaches, and the unwavering support of our families.
Next up, we travel to face a tough El Modena team, followed by a return to Davidson Field to avenge last year’s controversial loss to Cajon. If
we can stay healthy and continue to grow week by week, this group has a great chance to make a strong playoff run.
The support from our community has been nothing short of incredible. Our home opener was electric—the stands were packed with our hometown crowd, the Pop Warner youth players brought energy and excitement, and our students filled the Tarpit in true Newport fashion. That kind of atmosphere fuels our athletes and reminds us all what makes this program so special.
Thank you for standing behind Newport Harbor Football. With your continued support, we look forward to making this a season to remember.
Matthew Burns Head Coach, Newport Harbor Football

Dear Fans, Families, and Community,
Our Football team is coming off an impressive win at home against Lancaster High School and the stands were packed full of proud Sailor Nation! If you weren’t able to attend the game then you were probably watching the live streaming on Tar TV. If you have friends and family out of state they can still watch the game live and listen to our talented broadcasters.
SENIOR WEEK!
This week we want to celebrate our 18 senior Sailors. The football season goes by so fast and these seniors are out to make the most of their final season as Newport Harbor Sailors. High School is an amazing journey and athletics brings out the best in our school pride. Congratulations to our seniors, and lets give them our best tonight!
Watching all these neighborhood kids (Varsity/ JV and Freshman) play football for Newport Harbor would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Harbor Community. I encourage you to be involved and stay involved. Here’ show you can help.
Buy a “Support Newport Harbor Football” lawn sign for a $50 donation. Our goal is 250 signs throughout the neighborhood. Just go to TarFootball.com and click “shop” to easily purchase it. A hardworking Sailor will deliver the signs to your front lawn.
Buy a Christmas Tree from the football program this year. Our goal is to sell (we can deliver)
500 trees. Be on the lookout in late October for the website link- and make sure you select the option to have a hard-working-sailor deliver the tree to your home (usually the first week of December). We split the money with the cheer program because they are awesome and we support each other.
If you own a business, consider being a sponsor of the team. We have sponsorships that range from $90.00 to $9,000.00 – there is a sponsorship opportunity for everyone/anyone. Just email sstremick@tarfootball. com or mhatfield@tarfootball.com and we’ll send you the information.
The Newport Harbor Football Boosters is a 501(c) (3) non-profit (Federal Tax ID #33-0010005) and your donation is tax-deductible, or we can give you a marketing invoice.
Our mission as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Burns ad his staff to keep building Newport High School Football into one of the most respected public school football programs in the country for our student-athletes. All parents of the NHHS Football program are members of the booster club and we encourage you to get involved and stay involved.
THANKS SO MUCH AND Go TARS!!

It’s a great night to be a Newport Harbor High School Sailor, especially since it is Senior Night 2026!
I would like to extend a welcome to the Cajon High School Cowboys and all our visiting fans. Tonight marks our second home game of the year, and the fourth game of the season, along with Senior Night, where we start celebrating members of the Class of 2026.
Coach Burns has our team playing with poise, and they are well-positioned for a strong second-half run.
What impresses me most about this year’s team is not just their success on the field, but the incredible bond and camaraderie they share off the field. You can see it on campus, in the halls, and in the classrooms. Their commitment to each other and to our school is truly a hallmark of this years’ squad, and it has been a joy to watch for me. They play as one, and their teamwork is a testament to what we can achieve when we support one another-it’s what our community and country are all about.
Let’s show our Sailors some love tonight. Cheer loudly, be respectful, and let’s create an electric atmosphere at the Historic Davidson Field for the Class of 2026 on Senior Night!
—Go Sailors!
Sean Boulton, Principal

Newport Harbor started its season off with a hard-fought and thrilling contest, with the Sailors being edged out in a 33-27 loss to the Murrieta Mesa Rams, that showcased their heart and resilience throughout a fierce battle.
Leading the offensive charge, quarterback Jake Meer (#8) completed 14 of 25 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns, with added spark on the ground, rushing for 46 yards on three carries. His connection with Shane McKibbin (#5) was a highlight, as McKibbin grabbed seven catches for an impressive 149 yards and two touchdowns, providing a vital threat through the air. Jett Blauwkamp (#26) caught the touchdown pass on a roll out from Meer that put the Sailors up 27-26 with under ten minutes left in the game.
Despite the tough loss, the Sailors’ defense made critical plays that kept them in the game and shut the Rams’ offense down for most of the second half. Glenn Baranoski (#19) made a key interception to thwart a potential twopoint conversion, preventing the Rams from pulling further ahead. Cruz Marsella (#10) also had a pivotal play with a fumble recovery that set up a rushing touchdown by Baranoski, energizing the Sailor sideline and closing the lead gap. Adam Csanyi (#44) and Dylon DeAngelo (#6) came up big with nine tackles each.
Though they battled valiantly, the Sailors ultimately came up just short in a thrilling contest that showcased their grit and fighting spirit.

By: Christian Marsella
In a commanding performance at home, the Newport Harbor Sailors showed up for a dominant 42-26 victory over the Lancaster Eagles, igniting their season with an electrifying display on both sides of the ball.
The Sailors hit the field with relentless energy, rattling off a 21-0 first quarter lead. Jake Meer (#8) orchestrated a masterful offensive display, passing for 246 yards and four touchdowns with a sizzling 71.4% completion rate. His main targets were Jackson Stremick (#7) (7 Rec, 112 Yds, 2 TD) yards and Ryan Palmer (#15) (8 Rec, 98 Yds). Three different receivers – Owen Baldikowski (#9), Wyatt Wilson (#14) and Stremick - each found the end zone through the air, showcasing Newport Harbor’s versatile attack. The passing game was complemented by a balanced ground attack led by Matthew Yamakawa (#22), who rushed for 79 yards on 15 carries. In addition, Glenn Baranoski (#19) punched in a rushing touchdown from short range, adding to the scoring frenzy.
Defensively, the Sailors shone brightly, stifling the Eagles from their first possession. The unit racked up seven tackles for loss, with Cameron Hatfield (#33) leading the charge with three. Ryder Godbold (#13) sparked a pivotal moment, scooping up an 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown. Godbold also recorded the game’s sole quarterback sack, while Baranoski contributed a crucial fumble recovery.
This victory sets a strong tone for Newport Harbor’s season, fueled by explosive plays and stifling defense.
