Our preseason has wrapped up, and the Sailors head into league play with a 2–3 record. While the winloss column may not tell the full story, I can assure you this group has shown toughness, resilience, and steady growth with each game.
Three of our losses came in heartbreaking fashion, each decided in the final minutes, by a combined total of just 13 points. Those close battles have tested us, but they’ve also revealed the character of this team. On the flip side, we had decisive wins against Lancaster (42–26) and Colony (45–14), proving what this group is capable of winning when they execute together.
Don’t count us out. The adversity we’ve faced should serve as a strong indicator of how we can compete in the Bravo League—a league with no “cupcake” games and top-notch coaching staffs across the board. Newport will have its work cut out, but as I’ve said since day one: if we can stay healthy, we have an excellent chance to beat anyone in the league and make a run in the playoffs.
The team has been steadfast and resilient through the preseason, and we view each setback as an opportunity to grow. Now, the real challenge begins. We open league play with a dangerous Tesoro team that, like us, is 2–3 and eager to rebound from a tough league season last year. After Tesoro, we head into the legendary Battle of the Bay, returning once
again to OCC. This rivalry means everything to our community, and no matter what the records say, it always comes down to who plays the hardest. I have no doubt this year’s matchup will deliver another unforgettable contest.
Following BOTB, we face San Juan Hills, the frontrunner in the league and a team loaded with talent. We gave them a fight last year, and we look forward to doing so again with hopes of a different result. Next up is Yorba Linda, a dominant Bravo League team with a punishing run game. Stopping their ground attack and controlling the ball on offense will be key to taking that one. Finally, we close the league against Villa Park, where we’ll look to flip the script on last season’s lopsided loss.
This is a gauntlet, but it’s one we’re ready to run. I believe wholeheartedly in this team’s ability to rise to the occasion, execute down the stretch, and put themselves in position for a playoff berth.
Thank you for your continued support and belief in our program. The passion from the community fuels our athletes, and together we’ll keep building on the proud tradition of Newport Football.
Matthew Burns Head Coach, Newport Harbor Football

Dear Fans, Families, and Community,
Tonight marks one the most anticipated games of the season – Battle of the Bay! Rivalry games are always special. They carry the weight of tradition, pride, and community spirit, and of course, showcasing the best of high school football. Our players, coaches, and staff work tirelessly to prepare for the season. Tonight, they carry not just their own goals, but also the pride of our school, families, and community. Last year’s battle saw our Sailors on top for the second year in a row. Fans were on the edge of their seats all game and it came down to a fourth quarter interception and a touchdown in the final moments of the game to come out with a win. This was no easy feat and it’s going to take another huge effort to finish this game victorious. We have several players stepping up in key roles this year and expectations are high coming into this game that as always, has huge playoff implications.
The energy from our fans fuels our athletes and creates an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. Let’s keep the atmosphere electric! Whether it’s your first BOTB or your fiftieth, thanks for being here to support your Newport Harbor Sailors.

A Message from Principal Boulton: Honoring the 65th Battle of the Bay
Dear Newport Harbor Football Family, Sailors, and Community,
This Saturday night is more than just a football game—it is the 65th meeting of the storied Battle of the Bay against our rivals, Corona del Mar High School. Since the rivalry began back in 1963, this annual, and literal, Battle of the Bay has defined what it means to be a Sailor.
For six and a half decades, this game has been a rivalry that demonstrates local pride, athletic competition, community spirit, and grit. It represents a history passed down through generations of families, alumni, and players, which can also divide families and friends for one night.
Our overall record in this historic series stands at 41-23. That impressive number is not just a tally of wins, but a testament to the decades of hard work, dedication, and grit displayed by every player and coach who has ever worn the Tarball uniform.
To our players, Head Coach Burns ( ‘94 NHHS Alum): You are now a part of this profound legacy. The Battle of the Bay demands your absolute best—your focus, your will, and your commitment to teamwork. Play with Sailor Pride, play with the bravery that every Sailor has, and play with the respect for the rich tradition you represent.
To our students, families, and fans: Bring your energy, fill the stands, be a Sober Sailor and let your Tarball energy come out.
Let’s honor the 65-year history of this rivalry by competing at the highest level, representing the values of NHHS with class, and showing the true meaning of Sailor Pride.
Sean Boulton,
Principal

Newport Harbor went on the road to face El Modena in a hard-fought battle that came down to the wire. The Sailors fell just short, 21-17, but showcased resilience, playmaking, and defensive tenacity that gave the fans plenty to be excited about.
Jake Meer (8) showed terrific improvisation and poise under pressure. Meer had a big impact on the offense by throwing for 227 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 71 yards on the ground. His top target, Shane McKibbin (5), made his presence felt with 83 receiving yards and a touchdown, helping Newport Harbor stretch the lead in the second half. Owen Baldikowski (9) had a receiving touchdown and Daniel Rico (24) knocked in a 32-yard field goal to add to the Sailors’ point total.
While the scoreboard favored El Modena, Newport Harbor’s defense once again showed up with intensity and impact, holding the Vanguards to 6 points until deep in the fourth quarter. Cruz Marsella (10) was a force off the edge, racking up nine tackles with two crucial sacks that stalled El Modena drives. Glenn Baranoski (19) anchored the unit with a game-high 13 tackles while Trevor Glynn (2) added 11 tackles of his own, both adding physical play to stifle El Modena’s offense.
This one may go in the loss column, but the effort and energy point to a team ready to make waves as the season rolls on.

In a thriller that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Newport Harbor Sailors delivered a gutsy performance against the Cajon Cowboys, ultimately falling just short in a 38-35 heartbreaker. From explosive offensive drives to clutch defensive plays, Newport Harbor showed heart, hustle, and a whole lot of firepower in front of their home crowd.
The Sailors’ offense was clicking from the second quarter onward. The Sailors showcased a balanced offensive attack led by Jake Meer (8), who completed 19 of 28 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Jonah Takamori (0) was a force on the ground, racking up 78 rushing yards and two scores, while also adding 8 catches and 56 receiving yards to his stat line. Ryan Palmer (15) added to the Sailors’ offensive attack, making some key catches and finding the end zone with two receiving touchdowns.
Defensively, Newport Harbor made their presence felt with a relentless and disciplined effort. Cruz Marsella (10) ignited the crowd with a spectacular 50-yard picksix, then followed it up with a strip sack that Jaken Meyer (64) recovered deep in Cajon territory, setting up a prime red zone chance. Ryder Godbold (13) added to the sack count with one of his own. The Sailors continued racking up turnovers and showcasing their nose for the ball with a clutch interception by Shane McKibbin (5) and James Callaghan (1) causing a fumble and recovering two. The tackling trio of Glenn Baranoski (19), Ethan Ambat (4), and Trevor Glynn (2) anchored the defense with a total of 38 tackles, each in double digits.
Though the final score favored Cajon, Newport Harbor’s performance was a clear sign of growth and grit. With their offense surging and the defense making impact plays, Newport Harbor looks primed to turn close contests heading into league play.

The Newport Harbor Sailors rolled into Ontario and delivered a statement win, overpowering the Colony Titans 45-14 to snap their road-game drought and showcase their full potential.
Quarterback Jake Meer (8) had a highlight night, completing 19 of 26 passes for 289 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 52 rushing yards on seven carries. His career-best passer rating of 148.9 reflected a night of precision and poise.
The Sailors’ offense was balanced and explosive. Shane McKibbin (5) led the receiving corps with 110 yards and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard bomb. Ryan Palmer (15) added two scores on 56 yards, and Jackson Stremick (7) chipped in with 65 yards on five catches. Jonah Takamori (0) added to the scoring with a rushing touchdown, part of Newport’s 113 total ground yards at over five yards per carry.
Defensively, Newport Harbor was relentless and opportunistic. Glenn Baranoski (19) and Adam Csanyi (44) each posted double-digit tackles, combining for 25 total stops. Baranoski also recorded a sack and a 37-yard interception return that set up a goal-line score. The turnover train kept rolling with Csanyi causing and recovering a fumble, while Cameron Hatfield (33) added another fumble recovery. The Sailors kept Colony’s quarterback under siege with eight hurries and consistent backfield pressure. In total, the defense racked up 66 tackles and four tackles for loss, stifling Colony’s rhythm from start to finish.
With a 35-7 halftime lead and continued dominance through the second half, Newport Harbor sealed the win with a third-quarter touchdown and a fourth-quarter field goal before Colony managed a late score. Now 2-3, the Sailors will carry this momentum into league play.

Newport Harbor kicked of their league play against Tesoro. The Sailors came up just short against the Titans, dropping a 17-14 decision on the road. Despite the loss, the Sailors showed flashes of brilliance and continued to build on their season’s defensive identity.
Quarterback Jake Meer (8) felt the defensive pressure and used his scrambling ability to gain 62 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. Meer is averaging 43.5 yards per game and is the Sailors’ leading rusher. He was held to 148 yards in the air on 9-of-21 passing. Glenn Baranoski (19) delivered the Sailors’ second touchdown with a goal line run.
Defensively, the Sailors continued their season-long trend of toughness and tenacity. They held Tesoro scoreless until a controversial field goal was awarded at the end of the first half—granted only after a penalty with no time left on the clock. Owen Baldikowski (9) and Baranoski anchored the defense with a combined 26 tackles. Cruz Marsella (10) and Baranoski applied pressure to Tesoro’s quarterback, each recording a key sack.
Now sitting at 2-4, Newport Harbor looks ahead to a highstakes rivalry matchup against Corona del Mar. With their defense playing inspired football and Meer continuing to lead the offense, the Sailors remain a dangerous team capable of turning the tide.
