Dear booster club members (parents) and fans around the world.
Yes, “fans around the world” because as you may have noticed, we are streaming the games with the help fom Tar TV and our talented broadcasters.
If you are new to the Newport Harbor Football scene, Welcome. If you have been around for a while, welcome back.
A lot of people ask:
“What exactly is the booster club in charge of?”
Well thanks for asking, and we are happy to share our efforts so far and to thank you for your continued support.
The Newport Harbor Football Booster Club supports the efforts of the coaches and players on the football team. We think of ourselves as “the boost” the team needs leading up to the season to prepare and during the season to make sure the program has what it needs for a successful and safe.
We help boost the team with our time and resources. Every parent on the team is in the booster club. We ask for volunteers (time) and suggested contributions (money) several times per year. Football is a demanding sport, and it needs time and resources from our parents and community to make it all work.
A heartfelt thank you to those who have worked tirelessly to give the players and coaches the best experience possible. Watching all of these neighborhood kids (JV/ Varsity and freshman) play football for Newport Harbor would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Harbor community. I encourage you to be involved and stay involved. Here’s how you can help.
1. Buy a “Support Newport Harbor Football” lawn sign for a $50 donation. Our goal is 250 signs throughout
the neighborhood. Just go to TarFootball.com and click “shop” to easily purchase it. A hardworking Sailor will deliver the signs to your front lawn.
2. Buy a Christmas Tree from the football/cheer program this year. Our goal is to sell (we can deliver) 500 trees. Be on the lookout in late October for the website link- and make sure you select the option to have a hard-working-sailor deliver the tree to your home (usually the first week of December). We split the money with the cheer program because they are awesome and we support each other.
3. If you own a business, consider being a sponsor of the team. We have sponsorships that range from $90.00 to $9,000.00 – there is a sponsorship opportunity for everyone/anyone. Just email sstremick@tarfootball.com or mhatfield@tarfootball.com and we’ll send you the information.
The Newport Harbor Football Boosters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (Federal Tax ID #33-0010005) and your donation is tax-deductible, or we can give you a marketing invoice. Our mission as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Burns ad his staff to keep building Newport High School Football into one of the most respected public school football programs in the country for our student-athletes. All parents of the NHHS Football program are members of the booster club and we encourage you to get involved and stay involved.
Our current board of directors are : Michelle Showalter, Steve Whittaker, Amy Denoon, Julie Fegal, and our Treasurer Mark Hatfield.
Thank you so much, and Go TARS!!
Sam Stremick, Booster Club President 2024 sstremick@tarfootball.com
To all alumni, parents, and community supporters, welcome!
This is NHHS’s 95th year of playing football this yearneedless to say, we have a LOT going on, so buckle up.
Game #5 is homecoming vs ST. AUGUSTINE.
A reunion where the young and old gather to celebrate community at NHHS. Thank you to the Alumni Association for hosting 4th annual homecoming tailgate at our neighboring ENC facility. This year’s party included a tribute to the Undefeated 1994 Football Champs with several special guests like legendary Coach Jeff Brinkley & football announcer Mr. Dennis O’Hern.
Game #6 is vs. TESORO
On the football front, our team has been “battle tested” with five equally matched pre-season opponents. This has been our toughest pre-season schedule since I can remember (a big reason the new way CIF has re-organized the football schedules).
I am GRATEFUL to Coach Burns and his staff for taking on this challenge and helping our kids to develop disciplined work habits and character traits that are essential for a successful existence after high school. In the end, this character building is what is most important. Our student athletes develop lifelong skills that are so essential for professional success and personal livelihood beyond football.
I will echo a past request. Let’s piggy-back on Coach Burns, the staff, and the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts:
1. Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events.
2. Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to the guests that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure our guests feel welcome.
3. Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.
For these special games, I would like to thank the dedicated student-athletes class of 2025 of football, band, and cheer— along with all the parents and supporters who have devoted their time, effort, and money to our programs.
—Go Sailors!

Dear Newport Harbor Families and Friends,
Dear Newport Harbor Families and Friends,
The Sailors have weathered some stormy seas the past 4 weeks. We are struggling to find that first win of the season, but it’s not for the lack of hard work and discipline. We have faced some unimaginable adversity, some due to our lack of experience and some due to misfortune. The team is persevering and despite the 0-4 record are still chomping at the bit for a win. I have told the team, this is a hard time, but that’s what life can be, hard. It’s situations like these that develop our character and teach us how to respond when real life problems occur. I truly believe this is our path and there is a reason for it. All we can control is how hard we work and react to what is thrown our way. I am proud of this team thus far, their unwillingness to quit in light of some lop-sided games is telling and I know down the stretch this adversity will benefit us and our ability to respond and react.
Moving into a difficult Bravo league, We face some highly ranked and competitive teams in Tesoro, CDM, San Juan Hills, Yorba Linda, and Villa Park. I am confident that the discipline, hard work, and the legacy of excellence instilled in each player will help define the last half of the season. The Sailors will right the ship and win or lose we will continue to play with honor and respect for the game as well as for the long grey line of all the sailors that played before us.
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward
to working with the community to continue the pride and tradition of Newport football. Please feel welcome to contact me anytimewith your questions, comments or concerns. My email is mburns@tarfootball.com.
Sincerely,
Matthew Burns Head Coach, Newport Harbor Football
Celebrating Homecoming and welcoming back our Undefeated 1994 CIF Football Champs for the 30th Anniversary of their season.
Newport Harbor High School won its first CIF title after 64 years of Varsity Football at the 1994 CIF Southern Section championship game. Fourteen weeks of perfection, an accomplishment no other Newport Football team has achieved.
Congratulations to the 1994 14-0 Newport Harbor Football team.
“Since the team was untested, unproven and undersized, it is billed as the Most Improbable High School Football Season in History as the Sailors were unbeaten, untied and unbelievable.“
-Award-winning sportswriter Richard Dunn
The Sailors kicked off their 2024 season with a home opener against St. Paul and they were eager to get their first home win for Coach Burns. The Sailors took an early 14-0 lead highlighted by a tackle-breaking 18yard touchdown run by Jackson Stremick and a back of the end zone one-handed catch by Sammy Stremick from Bode Stefano. The Sailors were well-balanced on both offense and defense. Anchored by their center, Jackson Foster, the offensive line created running lanes and pocket protection for a balanced run and pass game. Solid pressure from the edge by Cruz Marsella and Jaxon Smith along with strong tackling from Glenn Baronoski and Davis Post kept their offense in check. Hudson Perez provided a touchdown-saving sideline tackle on a breakout run by St. Paul’s running back. The defense held St. Paul scoreless until late in the second quarter. The second half was marked by a controversial call that gave the Swordsmen a touchdown to tie the game at 14-14. Both offenses struggled to move the ball to extend their drives. The defense stepped up with Cade Fegel forcing a fumble that was recovered by Glenn Baronoski. The Sailors capitalized with a field goal and going up 17-14. St. Paul had time on the clock and moved the ball downfield and finished with a game winning touchdown to make the final score 17-21.
The Sailors traveled to La Habra to face the Highlanders hoping to repeat their win from 2023. La Habra struck first with a touchdown The Sailors answered back with a short run for a score by Glenn Baronoski to tie the game at 7-7. From there on, La Habra gave Newport Harbor a lot to deal with on both sides of the ball. The Sailors defense faced an even passing and running attack and found themselves giving up some big yard plays. The Highlanders defense gave Bode Stefano and his offensive line lots of trouble with constant pressure and tight coverage on the receivers. La Habra capitalized with three scoring drives resulting from forced turnovers. Offensive highlights include two catches for 47 yards by Sammy Stremick and four tough-running carries by Matthew Yamakawa for 21 yards. Defensive highlights include a blocked punt by James Callaghan and seven solo tackles by Glenn Baronoski. The final score was 31-7 in favor of La Habra.
