Dear booster club members (parents) and fans around the world.

Yes, “fans around the world” because, as you may have noticed, we are streaming the games with help from Tar TV and our talented broadcasters.

If you are new to the Newport Harbor Football scene, welcome. If you have been around a while, welcome back.

A lot of people ask me:

“What exactly is the booster club in charge of?”

Well, thanks for asking.

The Newport Harbor Football Booster Club supports the efforts of the coaches (and players) on the football team. Think of us just the way it sounds, “the boost.” We help boost the team with our time

and resources.

Every parent with a player on the team is in the booster club. We ask for volunteers (time) and suggested contributions (money) several times per year. Football is a demanding sport, and it needs time and resources from our parents and community to make it all work.

Last week’s home opener was exciting (to say the least). While it’s still early in the season, I think everyone saw the grit of the players on the field. Not giving up with seven minutes in the game, down by two touchdowns – and pulling out the win – yes, that’s grit. If you see a player or coach, please congratulate them for a job well done.

This is our second home game, and our last one for a while, as we have several away games and a bye game the next

several weeks. So thank you for coming out tonight and make sure to mark your calendar for Friday, September 29th (vs. HB) and then the annual Battle of the Bay on Friday, October 20th.

Finally, a huge “Thank You” to those that have given in the past (both time and money) in support of all these neighborhood kids. The program simply would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport/Mesa community.

GO TARS! O

Moe Pottios HOST Kevin Dull HOST

To all alumni, parents, and community supporters – welcome!

This is NHHS’s 94th year of playing football.

Coach Lofthouse and the football staff had everyone’s attention last week, deep in the 4th quarter, with an exhilarating 17-14 come from behind win. That evens out the varsity record to a respectable 1-1 after two tough opponents.

It’s worth mentioning that we have two other teams in the football program.

The JV team is off to a 2-0 start, topping El Toro at home, and then a road win at Tesoro.

And the freshman team is also 2-0 beating a frosh/soph St. Paul team, followed by a shutout vs. Tesoro last week.

That makes a 5-1 record “program-wide” as we enter into three games against La Habra.

Thanks to all of you that have come out to support the football program, band, cheer and ASB. It’s a great time to be a Sailor.

After tonight, our next home game will be Homecoming – Friday, September 29th. Please turn to page 5 in this program to see what the NHHS Alumni Association has planned for that evening. I hope to see as many former Sailors as possible at the event (ticket information is in the program on that page).

OK, let’s get ready for some football and be GREAT FANS tonight in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts:

n Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete – by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events.

n Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to the guests that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure our guests feel welcome.

n Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.

On this special night (first home game of 2023) I would like to thank the dedicated student-athletes class of 2023 of football, band, and cheer—along with all the parents and supporters who have devoted their time, effort, and money to our programs. Thank you and, as always, go Sailors! O

Back-to-back at Davidson Field.

Our home opener (last week vs. Tesoro) was a competitive one.

Our defense was excellent in the first half and shut them out. We needed that effort from the defense because the offense made a few mistakes and were unable to put points on the board in the first half.

In the second half, our defense tired a bit and gave up two scores. Fortunately, our offense woke up and played like we know they can and rattled off 17 straight points in the 4th quarter and we got a 1714 win with a last minute field goal.

Tonight we play the La Habra Highlanders. They come to Davidson Field with that same record as us (1-1). Our players are hoping to get off to a faster start tonight and get our second win of the season.

As always, win or lose, my hope is that it’s a spirited game and the effort and sportsmanship on the field represents Newport Harbor High School and what our community stands for.

Finally, as with all home games, please make sure you stay until the end when we

sing our alma mater. In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide:

“Hail, our Alma Mater, to her grey and blue; We give her love and honor for her spirit’s true. (it’s true) Our loyalty to Harbor High ever will our standard be. We’ll fight for the night, so hail Harbor High!”

I’d like to thank Dr. Boulton and administration, teachers and booster club for taking such an interest in the football program. Let’s play some football. O

THE ESSENCE OF COACH LOFTHOUSE’S “5 F’S” PHILOSOPHY

Getting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think. After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Lofthouse has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 6th year head football coach.

“Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.”

Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an opportunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years.

These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do.

#1 QB JADEN O’NEAL (SO.)

O’NEAL, LAMARQUE HELP NEWPORT HARBOR RALLY PAST TESORO

The Newport Harbor football team saved its best quarter for last week, as they rallied from a 14-0 deficit in the fourth quarter to beat Tesoro 17-14 on Thursday at Davidson Field.

“Our defense for the first half shut them out and then unfortunately, we had a couple mistakes that led to some touchdowns, but in the fourth quarter, they really clamped down and were able to get their offense off the field really quickly,” Sailors head coach Peter Lofthouse said.

The first half of the game featured scoring from neither team as both teams’ defense came up with stops to prevent the other team from scoring. For the Titans, they forced two turnovers with one coming with the Sailors driving in the second quarter.

The first score didn’t come until over halfway through the third quarter when Tesoro’s Travis Wood, an Air Force commit, scored on a fourth-down play on the Sailors’ one yard line in wildcat formation. Wood finished with 175 rushing yards on 34 carries and two touchdowns.

Much like the first game of the season loss to St. Paul, the Sailors’ struggled to

contain the opposing team’s run game. Wood’s second touchdown came from on a four-yard score and suddenly, the Titans were up 14-0.

Newport didn’t score until the 7:54 mark of the fourth quarter when quarterback Jaden O’Neal found Josiah Lamarque for a 54-yard catch and score. After the Sailors’ defense got the stop, it was time for their offense to go to work again.

O’Neal hooked up with Jordan Anderson for a 49-yard gain and on the play after, he hit Lamarque with a 28-yard touchdown catch, tying the game at 14-14.

“I think all of our kids were swarming to the ball pretty well, and then they had those two game-breaking plays by their kids and that kind of blew it open. We were getting to the ball and doing really well for quite awhile, but you can only hold them down for so long,” Titans coach Matt Poston said.

It seemed the Tesoro offense had woken up as Wood was running the ball effectively and quarterback Cash O’Byrne threw the ball precisely to his receivers. The Titans got inside the Sailors’ 40 and were chewing up the clock, which also saw the Sailors start burning their time outs.

With two-and-a-half minutes left, Tesoro made a huge gamble going for it

on fourth down when they needed nine yards since kicking a 50+ yard field goal would’ve been out of the question. But O’Byrne’s pass was broken up and the Sailors took over on their own 35.

O’Neal led Newport Harbor to a goodahead winning drive after making smart decisions when throwing the ball. Eventually, the Sailors booted in a 36-yard field goal field from Jon Richardson.

“We had a really sloppy first half, but we stood strong, we rallied in the locker room and just went from there and I think it’s going to be a really big stepping stone for us the rest of the season,” Lamarque said.

Tesoro did get two chances to either tie or take the lead, but its Hail Mary fell well short, as the Newport Harbor students stormed the field to celebrate with the team.

“I feel like in the first half we weren’t really executing, but once we went into the second half, we started executing and having faith overall,” O’Neal, who got his first win as a quarterback, said.

Newport Harbor (1-1) will need to execute early and often tonight vs. the talented and tradition-rich La Habra. O

Dr. Don Miyada

CLASS OF 1942

Dr. Don Miyada, Class of 1942, accomplished professor and resilient patriot, arrived at NHHS in 1938, unaware that in the next few years, world events would keep him from graduation day. In 1942, Miyada and his family were relocated to Poston, a Japanese Internment camp, where he received his NHHS diploma in the mail. Remarkably, Miyada kept a positive outlook, and what he remembers most is the kindness of his neighbors and peers during this difficult time.

Despite the hardship of his family’s situation, Miyada joined the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, in 1944. True to his optimistic character, Miyada cherished the positive camaraderie amongst his brothers in the battalion. His Nisei regiment made significant contributions to our nation’s ultimate victory, and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

After the War, Miyada had the freedom to pursue a higher education. Starting at Santa Ana College, Miyada went on to receive his undergraduate degree from UCLA, and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Michigan State University. Miyada became a Professor at UC Irvine, and his academic career in Pathology and Biological Chemistry spanned more than thirty years, benefiting students, faculty and the greater scientific community.

As a scientist, soldier and teacher, Newport Harbor High School proudly illuminates Dr. Don Miyada, our own star of fortitude, forgiveness and courage.
