BOOSTER‘S MESSAGE

To our Fans and Supporters,

Dear Parents, Alumni, Sponsors, and Fans of Newport Harbor Athletics.

What an amazing journey through High School for all of our Newport Harbor Students. “Blink and it’s over.” It’s Senior night. If you’re a parent, relative, or friend of a senior, then you know exactly what I mean. We have been so fortunate to watch and play with the students, families, and friends of our 18 seniors. Congratulations and let’s give them our best tonight!

A heartfelt thank you to those who have worked tirelessly to give the players and coaches the best experience possible.

Watching all of these neighborhood kids (JV/Varsity and freshman) play football for Newport Harbor would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport Harbor community. I encourage you to be involved and stay involved. Here’s how you can help.

• Buy a “Support Newport Harbor Football” lawn sign for a $50 donation. Our goal is 250 signs throughout the neighborhood. Just go to TarFootball.com and click “shop” to easily purchase it. A hardworking Sailor will deliver the signs to your front lawn.

• Buy a Christmas Tree from the football/cheer program this year. Our goal is to sell (we can deliver) 500 trees. Be on the lookout in late October for the website link- and make sure you select the option to have a hard-working-sailor deliver the tree to your home (usually the first week of December). We split

the money with the cheer program because they are awesome and we support each other.

• If you own a business, consider being a sponsor of the team. We have sponsorships that range from $90.00 to $9,000.00 – there is a sponsorship opportunity for everyone/anyone. Just email sstremick@tarfootball.com or mhatfield@tarfootball.com and we’ll send you the information.

The Newport Harbor Football Boosters is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (Federal Tax ID #33-0010005) and your donation is tax-deductible, or we can give you a marketing invoice. Our mission as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Burns ad his staff to keep building Newport High School Football into one of the most respected public school football programs in the country for our student-athletes. All parents of the NHHS Football program are members of the booster club and we encourage you to get involved and stay involved.

Our current board of directors are : Michelle Showalter, Steve Whittaker, Amy Denoon, Julie Fegal, and our Treasurer Mark Hatfield.

Thank you so much, and Go TARS!!

PRINCIPAL‘S MESSAGE

To all alumni, parents, and community supporters, welcome!

We are thrilled to kick off Newport Harbor High School’s 95th year of playing football. This season, we are incredibly excited to have Coach Burns (class of 1994) at the helm in his first year leading the team. As a Newport Harbor Alum, Coach Burns is guiding us into the next chapter of our storied program with pride and passion.

Our football staff and players have put in tremendous effort since the spring, preparing for the upcoming season. Football is no longer just a fall sport—it’s a year-round commitment. From spring weightlifting sessions to summer passing and lineman camps, and then returning to school well before any other students-this shows what incredible dedication they have towards our school, each other, and their commitment to excel.

It’s also important to recognize that our football program includes two other dedicated teams: JV and Freshman. In totality, all football players along with our committed coaching staff have worked tirelessly to bring us the 95th edition of Tarball!

A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of you who have come out to support our football program, the ever-growing TARPIT, as well as the band, cheer, and ASB. It’s truly a great time to be a Sailor!

After tonight, our next home game will be our Homecoming game on Friday, September 20th. Please take a moment to turn to page 55 in this program to see what the NHHS Alumni Association has planned for that evening. We hope to see as

many former Sailors as possible at the event.

Now, as we get ready for some football tonight, let’s commit to being the best fans by:

1. Showing respect for the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all our games and events.

2. Offering hospitality** to our guests at Davidson Field. We are fortunate to have the most beautiful high school setting in the land—just look up at the sky at kickoff and the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. Let’s be thankful for that and ensure our guests feel welcome.

3. Giving our best effort** in all we do as Sailors, whether on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.

On this special night, our second home game of 2024, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the dedicated studentathletes of the Class of 2024 on Senior Night, our football team, band, and cheer squads, as well as all the parents and supporters who have devoted their time, effort, and resources to our programs. Your hard work and commitment are what makes this community so magical.

Thank you, and as always

—Go Sailors!

COACH‘S MESSAGE

Dear Newport Harbor Families and Friends,

With great honor and enthusiasm, I introduce myself to you as the newest head coach of Newport Harbor Football. It is a privilege to take the helm of such a storied program, whose rich history and deep-rooted traditions, have contributed immensely to my own personal success. While an athlete at Newport, I was fortunate to play for legendary Coach Jeff Brinkley. After playing at Wagner University, I returned to Davidson Field as an assistant coach under Coach Brinkley for 20 years, where the core values of integrity, hard work, honesty and honor, as well as an incredible pride and love for this program, continued to be instilled in my character. With the exit of Coach Lofthouse, it was an easy decision (and long held dream of mine) to transition to this next level. As the 18th head coach, and only second alumni in this position, I am inspired and eager to continue to add to the legacy that is Newport Football. Being a teacher on campus, I am also

passionate about fostering a program that aims for success on the field, as well as develops young athletes into responsible, respectful, and resilient individuals in life.

Our program has a legacy of excellence, built on the drive, dedication, and sportsmanship of those who came before us, known as the Long Grey Line. It is my commitment to honor that legacy while forging a path for future success. CIF alignments have changed. Now based on power rankings, we have been moved to the Bravo division where we will be facing some excellent programs. I welcome you to join us on this new journey, and continue to support the program with your attendance. With your help, one of my foremost goals is to reignite the pride and passion that has always been a hallmark of Newport Football. Together we will create an environment where every player feels valued, every fan feels connected, and every game day feels like a celebration of our shared tradition and community spirit.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to working with the community to continue the pride and tradition of Newport football. Please feel welcome to contact me anytime with your questions, comments or concerns. My email is mburns@ tarfootball.com

Sincerely,
