To our Fans and Supporters,
Welcome to a New Season of Tradition and Excellence!
My first job as Booster Club President is to welcome you to the start of a new and exciting football season.
This year we embark on a journey that promises to be memorable not only because of the talent and hard work our players have shown, but also because of a renewed sense of tradition that our new head coach Matt Burns is bringing back to our program. With a fresh approach, and a roster of talented athletes, we are embracing a new tradition that honors the past while boldly stepping into the future.
We couldn’t be more excited for you to see the difference on and off the field. The energy around the team is electric and our players are ready to give their all for the school, the team and for you, the best fans in the world.
This Friday night, as we kick off our season, we hope to see the stands packed with the sea of blue and white echoing with cheers and support. Your role as fans cannot be overstated. Your enthusiasm, your passion, and your unwavering support are what make our home games an incredible experience for everyone. We invite you to join us for every game, wear your colors proudly and let our players feel the love and pride that comes from having the best fans in the league.
Together with Coach Burns at the helm, our dedicated players on the field, and your voices in the stands, we’re set to make this season one for the history books. Let’s
kick off this season with the heart and spirit that defines Sailor Nation!
Thank you for your continued support and for being here on Friday nights.
Go Sailors!!
Sam Stremick, Booster Club President 2024 sstremick@tarfootball.com
Dear Sailor Community,
We are excited to support Coach Matt Burns, a distinguished alumnus of the Class of ‘94, in taking on the role of head football coach in this first season at the helm. This appointment marks a new chapter in our program’s rich history, building upon the legacy established by our first football coach Ralph Reed.
Coach Burns brings a wealth of experience, both as a dedicated science teacher and a seasoned coach. His deep understanding of student-athletes and educational commitment align perfectly with our program’s core values. We believe his leadership will elevate our on-field performance and foster well-rounded young men who excel in the classroom and beyond.
At Newport Harbor, football is more than just a sport; it’s a character-building experience. We prioritize academic achievement, sportsmanship, and community service. Coach Burns shares this vision and is committed to developing student-athletes who positively impact our school and community.
We are fortunate to have a talented and dedicated coaching staff supporting Coach Burns; some are alum of our school, too. Their expertise and passion for the game are invaluable to our program’s success.
We also thank our educational partners for being an integral partner to our football family. We encourage you to visit our practices, attend games, and explore opportunities to support our program further. The cost-intensive and work-related load of football is hefty, so your support is appreciated.
We are excited about the future of Newport Harbor football and look forward to a successful season.
We are deeply grateful for your continued support. It is this collective effort and shared commitment that makes our football program a success. 95 years of Tarball at Newport Harbor High School. Let’s set sail. Thank you for being an integral part of our community.
Sean Boulton, Principal
With great honor and enthusiasm, I introduce myself to you as the newest head coach of Newport Harbor Football. It is a privilege to take the helm of such a storied program, whose rich history and deep-rooted traditions, have contributed immensely to my own personal success. While an athlete at Newport, I was fortunate to play for legendary Coach Jeff Brinkley. After playing at Wagner University, I returned to Davidson Field as an assistant coach under Coach Brinkley for 20 years, where the core values of integrity, hard work, honesty and honor, as well as an incredible pride and love for this program, continued to be instilled in my character. With the exit of Coach Lofthouse, it was an easy decision (and long held dream of mine) to transition to this next level. As the 18th head coach, and only second alumni in this position, I am inspired and eager to continue to add to the legacy that is Newport Football. Being a teacher on campus, I am also
passionate about fostering a program that aims for success on the field, as well as develops young athletes into responsible, respectful, and resilient individuals in life.
Our program has a legacy of excellence, built on the drive, dedication, and sportsmanship of those who came before us, known as the Long Grey Line. It is my commitment to honor that legacy while forging a path for future success. CIF alignments have changed. Now based on power rankings, we have been moved to the Bravo division where we will be facing some excellent programs. I welcome you to join us on this new journey, and continue to support the program with your attendance. With your help, one of my foremost goals is to reignite the pride and passion that has always been a hallmark of Newport Football. Together we will create an environment where every player feels valued, every fan feels connected, and every game day feels like a celebration of our shared tradition and community spirit.
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to working with the community to continue the pride and tradition of Newport football. Please feel welcome to contact me anytime with your questions, comments or concerns. My email is mburns@ tarfootball.com
Sincerely,
Matthew Burns Head Coach, Newport Harbor Football
