editor’s note

Every person will forever have a pandemic story. Things changed.

By the summer of 2020, many people had determined that kids were at very low risk from the virus. It’s subjective, of course, but there was a gut feeling that the closing down of athletics was doing more damage to the kids than the virus itself.

Summer and fall passed and by the end of the 2020 year there were still no high school sports.

This created, more or less, an underground community of football players, coaches and parents that quickly organized a *league* where kids could play the sport they loved. No stadiums. No cheerleaders. No press box. No field goal posts. No parking lot. Just discounted team jerseys, a few referees and football games.

At 7:00 a.m. on January 2, 2021, at an unaddressed location in Riverside County, The Sunset Argonauts Football Club (see pages 12-13) stepped onto a barely-finished 100-yard turf “field of dreams” football field to kick off a game vs. The Southwestern Warriors.

Huh? Who?

Oh, and two broadcasters.

In order to get the action to family and friends, we hired broadcasters Alex Crawford and Howard Croom to do live radio/streaming. Alex and Howard would drive to the field of dreams and set up their six-foot plastic table before sunrise. The generator needed a long extension cord so it was not too loud and interrupted the broadcast. The Internet connection was just good enough. Family and

friends got to hear the game.

All in all, roughly 1,400 players from all over California made up 32 teams in the Winner Circle Champions League (WCCL). Eight games were played on Saturday. Eight games were played on Sunday. Alex and Howard would call four or five games in a day, quickly studying rosters and asking players and coaches how to pronounce some of the more difficult last names.

Everyone learned a lot during those weeks at field of dreams. One thing that really hit me was how much people LOVED coverage of high school football. And with so many new friends from the Sunset League schools, it was just a natural fit to invest in Alex and Howard and see what they could do.

Alex and Howard did a terrific job last year. Each of them has moved on to the next chapters of their lives. We are fortunate to have two new hosts, Moe Pottios and Kevin Dull, who if you tune into our weekly podcasts, you’ll get to know.

I hope you enjoy the magazine.

THE SUNSET ARGONAUTS FOOTBALL CLUB

SunsetRewind.com 12 kickoff

When the state shut down football in California in 2020, the Argos were formed by calling Sunset League coaches and asking if they knew any players that wanted to play football. A few joined, then a few more… and by Christmas Eve (the second practice) there were 57 players and each Sunset League team was represented (except Los Alamitos, who formed their own team). Because the community colleges were also not playing football, the staff was from local JUCO coaches (CIF does not allow high school coaches to coach “club” teams) that were happy to be back on the gridiron. The Argos lost their first two games but ended with four straight wins to end the season 4-2.

Since that was two seasons/years ago, only a few of the Argo players (a handful of sophomores at the time) are still in high school. Most of the players from this photo have graduated out.

Regardless, The Sunset Argonauts Football Club is how this magazine (and podcast) started, so it’s worth reflecting back.

DAVIDSON FIELD REWIND

SunsetRewind.com 14 feature

Taking a look at the top 10 football games played at the venerable stadium.

Welcome to the Davidson Field time machine. One of the most treasured high school football stadiums in Orange County, Davidson Field has been the home of Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar since each high school opened for gridiron business, the Sailors in 1931 and the Sea Kings in 1963.

There are enough memories to fill a treasure chest and ample highlights to create a feature film.

While access to grainy, black and white footage of the early days is virtually impossible to assemble, including the first handful of Battle of the Bay contests between the Back Bay rivals, Sunset Rewind is taking a crack at the Top 10 all-time games played at the venerable stadium as we kick off the 2022 high school football season.

A list of such games could easily include nothing but Battle of the Bay contests, but in an effort to balance the books, Sunset Rewind is unveiling what one longtime local sportswriter lists as Davidson Field’s most important or classic masterpieces.

Bear in mind that many, even most, of the “top games” in Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar history were contested on fields other than Davidson. Also, while the Sea Kings have enjoyed a successful and unparalleled run for more than a decade, many of their home games were lopsided victories and, thus, not considered a candidate for “top games.”

Among the factors for choosing the top 10 games include elements of surprise, upset value, game-deciding

plays in the closing seconds and the importance of the contest in terms of postseason or league championship ramifications.

Grab some popcorn. It’s time for kickoff:

NO. 1: NEWPORT HARBOR 28, CORONA DEL MAR 21, 1992

You would be hard-pressed to find a more significant Battle of the Bay football game as the rivals faced each other for the only time in history in the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

It will forever be known as Battle of the Bay II.

At stake in the CIF Division V semifinal was a berth in the CIF championship game. Corona del Mar captured back-to-back CIF titles in 1988 and ’89, but the Sailors had never won a CIF banner and it had been 50 years since Newport Harbor appeared in a section championship game. The ghosts of Hal Sheflin and the 1942 Tars had seemingly crept inside the walls at Newport Harbor as Coach Jeff Brinkley’s Sailors tried to end a half-century long drought.

In 1992, the Sailors rallied to win when Wade Tift, a future UCLA shot putter, scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left in an edge-of-your-seat game to climax a wild fourth quarter.

CdM’s Chris Taylor scored on a 75-yard fumble recovery return for a touchdown to give the Sea Kings a 2113 lead. But Tift returned the ensuing kickoff to the Tars’ 45, setting up a game-tying, 25-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Gregg Williams to Chad La Bass. The Williams-La Bass duo also hooked up on a two-point conversion pass to tie it, 21-21. Seconds later, Newport’s Chris Edwards recovered a Corona del Mar fumble, forced by Jeff Sanita, to set up Tift’s winning touchdown on a draw play.

It’s the only time the rivals squared off in the Battle of the Bay a second time in a season, as the Sailors avenged

feature an earlier 17-0 loss in the regular season. The victory enabled Newport Harbor to reach a CIF championship game for the first time with a full playoff schedule. (The ’42 Tars advanced straight to the CIF small-schools title game after winning their first Sunset League championship.)

NO. 2: NEWPORT HARBOR 17, EDISON 13, 1979

In perhaps the most stunning upset ever at Davidson Field, the unheralded Sailors, entering the Sunset League opener with a 1-3-1 record against the eventual CIF Division 1 champion Chargers, shocked their homecoming crowd, as well as the entire CIF Southern Section football world.

Considered one of the top teams in the country, Edison featured a plethora of future collegiate players, including quarterback Frank Seurer and tailback Kerwin Bell. But Coach Bill Workman’s Chargers struggled in the steady drizzle to find offensive continuity in the first three quarters as the game was scoreless entering the fourth quarter.

Edison finished 12-2 and eventually defeated Redlands, 55-0, in the CIF title game at Anaheim Stadium, the most one-sided score in large-school championship game history. Edison stormed to the championship after outscoring four playoff opponents, 142-29. In 1988, the Los Angeles Times ranked the 1979 Edison squad as the top team in Orange County history.

But prior to the Chargers dominating the prep football scene and being highlighted regularly on Bob Elder’s Sunday night Orange County sports talk radio show on KEZY 1190 AM, Edison the Goliath fell to David.

In a spellbinding fourth quarter, Edison scored first on Seurer’s short keeper into the end zone. Coach Hank Cochrane’s Sailors responded with an impressive 62-yard touchdown drive, capped by quarterback Gary Parrish’s 4-yard run to pay dirt. On Newport

Harbor’s next series, Parrish connected with tight end Mike Ramsen on a 26yard scoring toss. Edison fumbled on its next possession, caused by Harbor defensive end Peter Gust and recovered by the Sailors’ Neil Ross at the Edison 13-yard line, setting up a decisive 29yard field goal by Newport’s Scott Giem. Edison scored again, but time ran out on the Chargers as Alan Gaddis intercepted a Seurer pass with 52 seconds left to ice the headline-grabbing upset.

NO. 3: CORONA DEL MAR 42, ROOSEVELT 35, 2017

While the Sea Kings have rambled for more than a decade of dominance with many blowout victories, their firstround win over Roosevelt in the CIF Division 4 playoffs was considered by Coach Dan O’Shea as their “greatest win” since he began at the school in 2011 as a defensive coordinator. It was a noteworthy quote since the Sea Kings had won three CIF Southern Section

titles and a CIF State championship in seven years.

They did not reach the CIF finals in 2017, but their journey to the quarterfinals will forever live in Sea King lore.

With 27 seconds left, CdM quarterback Nathaniel Espinoza scored on an 8-yard touchdown run, but the Sea Kings’ potential go-ahead two-point conversion was stopped by Roosevelt, which maintained a 35-34 lead. The Sea Kings recovered an onside kick, booted and recovered by left-footed kicker Max Casper, and scored an epic go-ahead touchdown to win in dramatic fashion. They scored two touchdowns within a span of 13 seconds in the game’s final half-minute.

After recovering the onside kick near midfield, Espinoza connected with John Humphreys on a 23-yard pass, setting up the Sea Kings at the Roosevelt 26 with 20 seconds left. On the next play, CdM standout wide receiver Tae Le hauled in one-handed catch at the pylon as Corona del Mar scored a hard-to-believe, game-winning touchdown with 14 seconds to play. Le held onto the ball as he fell forward out of bounds.

The remarkable 26-yard TD catch

culminated an unbelievable contest for Espinoza, who ran for 190 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 224 yards and three touchdowns, after the Sea Kings trailed, 13-0, and rallied twice to tie the game and twice coming within one point. After Le’s amazing catch, Espinoza’s successful two-point conversion run capped the improbable comeback and provided the Sea Kings with their margin of victory.

“Cramping in both of my legs,” Le said after the game, “not going to lie. I’ve been fighting an infection the entire week. I’ve got a gnarly headache. Just complete concentration on that last play.”

NO. 4: NEWPORT HARBOR 7, CORONA DEL MAR 6, 1994

There have been several epic Battle of the Bay encounters with hairpin turnarounds, one-point victories and classic conclusions. But the ’94 game ranks high based on the historical consequence of the campaign as the Sailors (14-0) completed the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s first unbeaten and untied season, and the only perfect season since the Tars started tackling and making touchdowns 90-plus years ago.

Newport Harbor’s hot football team was undefeated after six weeks and atop the CIF Division V rankings for the first time in ’94, but the Battle of the Bay can change things quickly. The Tars had not played at Davidson Field in four straight weeks and the supercharged atmosphere ignited possibly the loudest ring of approval in Harbor football chronicles. But the Sea Kings would have none of it, wanting desperately to hand their Back Bay rivals their first loss.

“The community has really rallied around us,” Brinkley said. “I really noticed it when we came out of the locker room at about 7:25 (p.m.). When our kids hit the gate outside the track (at Davidson Field), and the crowd saw them, they let out a roar that gave me

chills. I told our coaches, ‘If that doesn’t get you ready to play, I don’t know what will.’ That’s what it’s all about.”

In the most unpredictable of plays, and with Newport Harbor’s back against a wall, Corona del Mar was set up for a relatively easy 25-yard field goal to win the game in the closing seconds. But the Sea Kings tried to center the ball between the hash marks to take time off the clock, calling a quarterback sneak to advance it and provide better placement on the field for the possible winning field goal.

Following a timeout with 20 seconds left, the Sea Kings fumbled the center-quarterback exchange and Newport Harbor defensive end Jack Hogan recovered the ball with 11 seconds remaining to seal the win and keep Harbor’s perfect season intact. If the roar of the home crowd was loud upon the Sailors’ entrance into the stadium to begin the game, it was deafening after the fumble recovery.

After the fumble, a video replay showed the loose ball ricocheting off a CdM player’s heel, from behind, unbeknownst to the Sea King lineman. Almost like the Immaculate Reception, the pigskin bounced directly to Hogan, who fielded it cleanly, hit the ground and popped back up with a delight of victory.

“It was pretty amazing,” Hogan said of the Immaculate Fumble Recovery.

“I saw the ball come loose, and I ran as fast as I could to fall on it. My eyes were wide open, and I watched it into my hands. I couldn’t believe it. I saw it and I just grabbed it.”

NO. 5: NEWPORT HARBOR 49, LA HABRA 48, 2013

Fans stormed the field after the Sailors’ exhilarating upset victory over top-seeded La Habra, which entered with a 10-1 record, in the CIF Southwest Division quarterfinals as Quest Truxton completed a memorable contest by intercepting a Hail Mary pass on the game’s final play.

Truxton caught 14 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns, including a thrilling game-winner with 50 seconds left as he snatched a 16-yard scoring pass from quarterback Cole Norris and sparked the Sailors to their 14th trip to the CIF semifinals (they eventually reached the CIF finals in 2013, the ninth CIF title-game appearance in Tar football annals). The Sailors entered the game with a 6-5 mark.

On the go-ahead touchdown, Truxton caught the pass high and managed to keep his feet inbounds in a seesaw game. Norris threw for 474 yards and five touchdowns. “This is going to be one of those (games) that people are going to talk about,” said Brinkley, whose Newport Harbor teams played in eight CIF championship games in his illustrious 32-year career at the helm.

SunsetRewind.com 17 feature
Davidson Field circa 1930s.

Harbor jumped out to a shocking 21-0 lead, only the second time in La Habra’s season in which the Highlanders trailed by 21 points, and that was two months ago in their only loss of the year, to powerful Mission Viejo, the fifth-ranked team in the state by CalHiSports.com.

La Habra came back with 21 points in the second quarter as the Tars held a 28-21 halftime lead, and the Highlanders rallied to take the lead with 2:07 left in the game. The Tars, however, responded.

Norris, a junior and eventual threeyear varsity starter for the Sailors, delivered to his favorite target, Truxton, on a 16-yard scoring pass to crown the Sailors’ game-winning drive with 50 seconds remaining. It was Truxton’s fourth TD pass.

With La Habra’s offense threatening one more time, Truxton, a cornerback on defense, intercepted a long pass near the goal line as time expired.

NO. 6: CORONA DEL MAR 14, OCEANSIDE 7, 2019

It was not one of Corona del Mar’s finest moments on offense, which featured several future Pac-12 Conference performers, such Washington-bound quarterback Ethan Garbers, Stanford commit and two-way standout John Humphreys, tight end Mark Redman (Washington) and senior wide receiver Bradley Schlom (UCLA).

On their way to the most successful season in district history with a perfect 16-0 record and CIF State 1-A championship, the Sea Kings had their closest margin victory. It was a campaign that included five straight Sunset League wins with a running clock in the fourth quarter, an unheard-of feat considering how many traditionally strong schools play in the league.

The Sea Kings also breezed through the CIF Southern Section Division 3 playoffs on their way to the title, their fourth section championship of the de-

cade in six title-game appearances. But to achieve their second state championship (they won the CIF State Division 3 title in 2013) and first-ever 16-0 record, the Sea Kings needed to edge Oceanside in the CIF State Southern California Regional Division 1-A Bowl Game.

While the aforementioned offensive stars garnered most of the 2019 headlines, Corona del Mar relied on its defense to stop Oceanside, recording two goal-line stands to secure the victory and improve to 15-0. Dylan Wood, Gavin Scott and Charlie Mannon provided sacks on defense for the Sea Kings, and senior captain and outside linebacker Mason Gecowets tackled Oceanside’s Kavika Tua just short of the goal line on the game’s final play.

After struggling most of the game, CdM’s offense rallied late in the third quarter as Garbers found Simon Hall on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Breaking a 7-7 tie, Garbers carried for a one-yard keeper into the end zone with 8:03 left in the fourth quarter to provide CdM with the go-ahead score.

NO. 7: NEWPORT HARBOR 20, DOMINGUEZ 19, 2021

The Coach Peter Lofthouse Era reached a zenith last season as the Tars won their fourth CIF Southern Section championship. But before playing in the CIF Division 6 title game, Newport Harbor needed to squeak by Compton Dominguez in a semifinal thriller.

The Sailors, who finished the regular season with a 3-7 record following a rigorous Sunset League and nonleague schedule, earned an at-large berth into the CIF playoffs and made the most of their opportunity.

Against a Dominguez team that had scored at least 40 points in its first two playoff games, the Sailors came from behind twice and featured an excellent defensive stand late in the game as they eked out the triumph.

“It’s a really cool thing, it really is,” Lofthouse said. “We heard a lot of people say we didn’t belong in the playoffs at 3-7, and now we’ve put together a three-game stretch and really started playing some of our best football. We feel like we’re peaking at the right time. Now we get the opportunity to go play for a CIF title.”

SunsetRewind.com 18
feature
Davidson Field circa 1930s.

The second-seeded Dons held leads of 13-0 and 19-14. Newport’s Kashton Henjum hauled in a go-ahead touchdown pass from A.J. Guitron-Moore with 5:34 left in the fourth quarter. Guitron-Moore fired a well-placed strike to Henjum down the right sideline for a 20-yard score.

Harbor’s conversion pass was broken up as the hosts settled for a one-point lead, needing to rely on its defense to stop Dominguez and senior left-handed quarterback Jordan Ford.

Nathan Peters and Connor Chenier combined to sack Ford for an eightyard loss on second down to ignite the Newport defense on Dominguez’s final drive. Harbor’s Carson de Avila came up with a key tackle on third-and-18 on a screen pass, holding Dominguez to just three yards. Ford’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete and the Sailors held on for a huge win, propelling them to their 10th CIF championship game and ninth in 30 years.

NO. 8: NEWPORT HARBOR 27, CORONA DEL MAR 26, 2012

Heading into the 2022 high school football season, Corona del Mar is enjoying a nine-game winning streak in the Battle of the Bay.

This game a decade ago is ranked here not because it’s the last Harbor win in the rivalry series, but because the 2012 Battle of the Bay represented the emergence of an unknown sophomore quarterback, Cole Norris, who would finish his three-year varsity career at Newport Harbor as the school’s all-time leader in passing yards with 6,955.

The late heroics, must-see game-winning drive and utter surprise of the Harbor victory elevates this Battle of the Bay into the rivalry’s pantheon.

In Norris’ first varsity start, replacing injured starting quarterback Zach Wade, the Sailors used a 95-yard, 17-play drive to score at the end of the game and upset the Sea Kings, converting a fourth-and-goal scenario on the Corona del Mar 22-yard line with 24

seconds remaining.

With one play left, Brinkley told Norris to give one of his wide receivers a chance to make a play, and Norris connected with Cory Stowell, an unlikely target, on a 22-yard touchdown pass. Norris didn’t see Stowell’s snag in the end zone, because a Sea King defender put him on the ground after the throw with a clean hit. But Norris knew what happened because of the crowd roar on the Harbor side.

In his varsity debut, Norris completed 14 of 26 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns, including eight of 14 throws in the memorable game-winning drive, with two pass completions on fourth-down situations. (CdM later won its second of three straight CIF section championships.)

NO. 9: NEWPORT HARBOR 7, ANAHEIM 0, 1970

For the first time since 1942, the Tars captured at least a share of a league championship and participated in the CIF playoffs, highlighted by their Week 3 victory over longtime powerhouse Anaheim in a major upset win for Newport Harbor against legendary coach Clare Van Hoorebeke.

Earlier in the year, Tar Ball leader and quarterback Alvin White and some buddies suggested that the team place American flags on the side of their helmets, in honor and respect of the U.S. military, and that tradition has never wavered since the opening of that new decade amid political protests, the Kent State shootings, division within the country and bon fire burnings of Vietnam War draft cards on college campuses. You can almost hear the period song and anti-war movement anthem

“Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival as Newport football squares up in a David-versus-Goliath situation against the massively favored Colonists and the most famous coach in Orange County football in the 1950s and ’60s.

Anaheim was ranked No. 1 at the time in Orange County and No. 2 in

CIF Division 1, but the Tars stunned the Colonists at Davidson Field before an estimated 7,000 fans. Jim Swick recovered an Anaheim fumble in the end zone for the game’s only touchdown, following a forced fumble by Newport Harbor’s Terry Albritton, a future world record-holder in the shot put. It was about muscle and mass for Tar Ball in 1970.

NO. 10: CORONA DEL MAR 44, ESTANCIA 40, 2006

In the fog, you could see only offensive fireworks as the Sea Kings prevailed in an all-district barnburner in the first round of the CIF Southern Division playoffs.

It was a defensive play, however, which turned the score around in the third quarter as CdM junior defensive lineman Stephen Deverian penetrated into the middle of the Estancia line to stymie an option play on fourth-andone at Corona del Mar 30-yard line, creating a two-yard loss and forcing the onset of yet another Sea King offensive possession.

After the turnover on downs, the Sea Kings’ offense scored for the seventh straight possession, marching 68 yards on 11 plays to flip a 34-31 deficit into a 37-34 advantage. The Sea Kings, who never trailed again, won their second postseason game since 1995 (they also won in the first round in 2005).

After Deverian’s defensive pressure helped force a turnover on downs, Corona del Mar quarterback Taylor Hughes passed to tight end Ali Meshkin, who was all alone in the end zone to catch Hughes’ third scoring toss with 10:13 left in the game.

A muffed option pitch on Estancia’s next offensive play was recovered by CdM’s Dan DiChirro at the Eagles’ 32, setting up the Sea Kings’ next touchdown and giving the hosts a 44-34 lead with 8:47 remaining in a back-andforth game that featured nearly 900 combined yards of total offense, 84 points, 41 first downs and no punts.

The world of sports is replete with many sacred grounds. The Forum. Madison Square Garden. The Coliseum. Soldier Field. Fenway Park. The Rose Bowl. Lambeau Field. Just to name a few.

These stadiums have all stood the test of time and are etched in our memories. Each one special and unique. Each one has played host to moments that brought joy to some sports fans, while dismay to others. These fields are alive, the energy that emanates from them is palpable. They stand as monuments to all that is great about competition. They stand as reminders of eras past, and things to come. They are a part of the American fabric, they represent us as a country, and our love of sports.

Orange County is no stranger when it comes to historical and iconic sports venues as well. Davidson Field (see Dunn’s story on pages 14-19) is home to two Sunset League football programs: Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar.

Another such notable and hallowed stadium, stepped in tradition, just happens to be home to three Sunset League Football teams: Huntington Beach, Edison and Fountain Valley.

‘Cap’ Sheue Field is located on the campus of Huntington Beach High School, which was originally known as Las Bolsas High School, and opened in 1902 in the city of Los Alamitos. Due to low attendance numbers, it was decided that the school should be moved to a different location, and in 1906, the school found its permanent home, in the city of Huntington Beach. An oil

boom in the 1920’s was responsible for the name “The Oilers” which is still the mascot that represents the school.

Under the oil boom, the city flourished. When surfing came to the mainland, and exploded in popularity, Huntington Beach was the global epicenter of everything that comprised the “surf culture” movement. As a result of this, Huntington Beach came to be known as “Surf City U.S.A.”. Huntington Beach High School would also come to be known as one of the best comprehensive high schools on the West Coast, if not the entire United States. A school that excelled not only in academics, but the arts and athletics as well. A distinguished place of learning where students could thrive.

It’s also a place to watch great football. The design of the stadium is both

feature

creative and intelligent, as it provides spectators on both sides of the field clear and unobstructed views. When the sun sets here over the ocean, you are treated to a dazzling display of colors and hues that adorn the Huntington Beach sky over the stadium. A light and gentle breeze cools the stadium by day, so it never really seems too hot, not even in the August summer. The stadium has stories to tell that transcend multiple generations of fans, players and coaches alike. Everyone who has ever been to Cap Sheue Field has a story about it.

Harry M. Sheue was born in the city of Peoria, Iowa in 1895. His family moved to Iola, Kansas in 1903. Sheue himself was an exceptional athlete in high school where he lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track & Field. He demonstrated leadership qualities while in school, and as a result of this, he was named the captain of the Iola High

School Basketball team that won the Kansas State Basketball championship in 1915. The name “Cap” was given to him as a nickname, due to the fact that he was indeed the “captain” of the Basketball team. The name was so endearing, that it somehow stuck, and the legend, that is Cap Sheue, was created over a century ago in the great state of Kansas.

After arriving at Huntington Beach High School in 1925, he proudly and diligently served the school, as well as the community as a teacher, coach, guidance counselor and athletic director until his retirement in 1964. It did not take long for the community to recognize his positive impact on, or his importance to the city of Huntington Beach, as they named the stadium after in 1967, only three years after his retirement. He continued to inspire and motivate high school students even after he retired, as he would address and

speak to each new incoming freshman class at Huntington Beach when school began each year. His motivational speeches would inspire students, and make them feel like they were a part of the Oiler family.

While Cap Sheue Field has been host to multiple sporting events, there is just something special about the “Friday Night Lights” of high school Football.

Undoubtedly, Cap Sheue Field has been host to some of the most exciting and memorable high school Football games that have ever been played in the great state of California. Championships have been won there, while heartbreakers too have occurred. Of course there will be more great and memorable games played here in the future. Perhaps even some this season. It is only fitting and appropriate though, that a stadium named after a legend, should indeed be host to legendary games.

season preview

OUTLOOK:

The Griffins come off of a 2021 campaign that saw them win yet another Sunset League Championship. When the CIF divisions were announced for the 2021 playoffs, the Griffins landed in the Open Division, which is widely regarded as the best and most competitive division of high school football in the entire United States of America. The Griffins have a tradition rich program that is only exceeded by the talent that they have on their 2022 roster. A team replete with talent on both sides of the ball combined with an explosive Special Teams unit, will make for a unique and special Football team that will be very entertaining to watch. The Griffins have the talent, skill and ability to win the Sunset League, as well as a CIF title.

OFFENSE:

The Los Alamitos offense is a high powered, precise machine that can quickly strike, leaving defensive units wondering what just happened. Last season they averaged 42 points a game, and it is likely that they will exceed that lofty number this season. USC bound Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon, the two time defending co-MVPs of the Sunset League, are back for their senior year. Nelson is of course the best high school Quarterback in the nation, and Lemon makes catches and has such remarkable route running skills that it makes him almost impossible to defend. Backing up Nelson at QB is freshman prodigy Jaden O’Neal. Gavin Porch, a four year Varsity starter and two time 1st Team All Sunset League selection gives Nelson an additional top notch receiver to throw to, as well as another skilled ball carrier as he also excels as a Running Back. Ethan O’Connor, who was a first team all league player himself last season, will also cause matchup problems for opposing defenses with his skill set, and ability to get open. Senior Kassius Ashtiani and freshman Ja’My-

ron Baker should also provide targets for Nelson. Look for senior Running Back Damian Henderson to add additional power and options to the offense. When you combine these remarkable skill players with the Griffins talented Offensive Line, which is one of the best pass protecting and run blocking units in all of California, you can expect to see big numbers on the Griffin’s side of the scoreboard every game. Look for Kapono Mao and Alfonzo Leomiti, both 2nd team All Sunset League selections in 2021, to lead the Griffin’s offense towards the end zone often this season. Rudy Montalvan will bring additional physicality to this talented Offensive Line. If you are a fan of high tempo, fast paced, football, with future Division I collegiate stars and potential NFL players, Los Alamitos will be a team you definitely want to see play this season.

DEFENSE:

The Griffins are stacked on the defensive side of the ball. Moving the ball and scoring on the Los Alamitos defense is going to be quite the formidable task for opposing offenses this season. Isaiah Dorsey, the reigning Defensive Back of the Year for the Griffins will lead a skilled group of secondary defenders. Look for seniors Makai Lemon, Gavin Porch, Ethan O’Connor and freshman Jerrod Terry to secure a great secondary. A stout Linebacker group will consist of two gifted sophomores, Sirr Bible and Anthony League, as well as Kaleb McCutcheon. Junior CJ Berthon and Servite transfer Jayven Simbe will solidify this stellar group of Linebackers. These backers are equally skilled in pass coverage and run stopping, while being highly motivated to seek out whoever carries the ball on offense. Up front, the Griffins Defensive Line will be led by senior returning starter Sinn Brennan, senior Ryder Trujillo, freshman Noah Faupusa, and T.A. Cunnigham, a Defensive Lineman who disrupts

offenses on every play. Cunningham, a junior, recently moved here from Georgia, is the number one rated Defensive Lineman in the country according to several recruiting sources and adds to a very strong front. He currently holds multiple offers from Division I schools in every conference imaginable. Look for the Griffin’s defense to have many takeaways this season, as well as put some points on the scoreboard too.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

On Special Teams the Griffins will have Makai Lemon, Gavin Porch and Damian Henderson handling the kick off and punt return duties. All three have great speed and are capable of taking it to the house at any time. Kicker Chase McLachlan should have many opportunities to put points on the scoreboard, by way of the extra point, as the Griffins offense will be scoring a significant amount of touchdowns. On the rare occasion that the Griffins might need to punt, none other than Malachi Nelson will handle the punting duties. Of course, this gives Los Alamitos the option of running a fake punt to further bolster their already prolific offense. The inspirational story of Carson Fox, who battled, as well as beat cancer, and now is equipped with a prosthetic leg, will resume his role as the long snapper for the Griffins.

CAN’T MISS GAME:

Thursday, October 13th, 2022 vs. Los Alamitos

In what could potentially be the game to determine the Sunset League champion for 2022, the Chargers will slug it out with the Griffins. This will be one of the best Football games in Orange County and all of Southern California this season. Mark the date on your calendar, as this is going to be one game that you definitely don’t want to miss.

OUTLOOK:

The Chargers finished second in league last year with a 4-1 record. With many quality returners and some key additions to the 2022 squad, the Chargers are poised to make a run at the Sunset League title this season. A challenging pre-season schedule that includes Orange Luthern of the Trinity League, and South County powerhouse San Clemente, should pre-

SunsetRewind.com 39
Head Coach: Jeff Grady

pare Edison for the gauntlet that is the Sunset League. The Chargers will rely on their high powered offense and stout defense to get them the league title they covet, while enabling them to not only get into the CIF playoffs, but make a significant run that could result in a CIF championship for Edison.

OFFENSE:

The Chargers return six starters on offense from last year’s squad. The familiarity that the returners have with the offense will work to the advantage of the Chargers. There will be multiple offensive schemes that the Chargers will employ, which will be contingent upon the type of defense they are facing. The ability to run various offensive concepts gives the Chargers the upper hand when combating different defensive fronts and alignments. Senior Parker Awad returns as the starting Quarterback in 2022, and with a bevy of talented offensive players by his side, he will be an effective leader for the Edison Offensive attack. Tucker Tripp, Malachi Pierce, Ty Bankaruk and Jackson Irwin are returning Wide Receivers, giving Awad numerous weapons in the passing game. Ashton Hurley and Mason York will also make contributions on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive standouts Carter Hogue and Jared Schnoor will look to make an impact in the Chargers rushing attack as they both take snaps at running back in their senior and junior season, respectively. Of course every successful offense starts with protection up front, and the Chargers have a talented offensive line that is anchored by senior Zachary Gruwell. The offensive line was a strong point for the Chargers in 2021, and despite working in a number of new

starters in 2022, they will need a similar showing from this group in 2022 to allow Awad and the offense to find their rhythm. Logan Shill, a junior lineman, will also be a stalwart player on a line that will be instrumental in enabling the Chargers to put up a multitude of points this season.

DEFENSE:

Edison will most likely play a 4-3 defense this year, with mixed coverages in the secondary. They return five starters from the 2021 defensive squad. Cole Truelove, a senior Defensive Lineman, should be very disruptive to opposing offenses. He can get to the Quarterback quickly, causing chaos and timing issues for the signal caller. Truelove should be a sack machine this year, although there will be times when he will have to fight through double team blocking. He will be an effective run stopper, which will limit what other offenses can do against Edison. Jake Giles will bolster an already skilled Defensive Line. The junior has great instincts and the ability to quickly recognize what an offense is doing, therefore giving him opportunities to make big plays. Logan Gregory is a great tackler who will be one of the leaders of the Linebackers. Dom Lopez and Dylan Walters will see a lot of playing time for the Chargers at Linebacker. Lopez, who will pretty much never leave the field, is a high energy player who can hit, and hit hard when given the opportunity, while Walters will give the Chargers some extra punch to an already aggressive and fast Linebacker assembly. The secondary patrol will consist of Jared Schnoor, Malachi Pierce, Carter Hogue and Jackson Irwin. Irwin can fly to the

ball and meet Wide Receivers with tremendous hitting ability. He will cause many opponents to cough up the ball this season. Malachi Pierce will be good in recognizing pass routes, thus helping him to neutralize the various passing game concepts the Chargers will see this year. Schnoor and Houge will shore up the rest of the secondary, making Edison one tough group of Defensive Backs to throw against with any success. The Chargers defensive unit will be highly effective this season, as well as very entertaining to watch play.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The reigning Sunset League Kicker of the Year award recipient is back to resume his kicking duties for the Chargers. In a league that is loaded with great kickers, you have to be extremely talented to win the aforementioned honor. Nicholas Preston has great range, and can hit field goals from distances that most high school kickers can not. Putting kickoffs into the end zone will also help the Chargers in the game within the game, which of course is the fight for field position. Having Preston at Kicker gives the Chargers an additional scorer who will manufacture many points with his foot this season.

CANT’T MISS GAME:

Friday, October 21st, 2022 vs. Newport Harbor

Longtime and familiar rivals meet again for the 2022 version of “The Battle of the Bay”, a game that is always circled on every Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor calendar every year. This community based rivalry is what makes Football so great. An epic Sunset League battle that could be extremely important in the league standings, as well as the CIF playoff seedings.

OUTLOOK:

The Sea Kings placed third last season in a tough Sunset League. They finished the season with a strong record of 9-3, including a victory in the first round of the CIF playoffs. Corona del Mar looks to get to the next level this season, and improve upon what was a good 2021 season. The Sea Kings have a high powered offense that will put a lot of points on the scoreboard, while putting pressure on opposing defenses. The

SunsetRewind.com 55 season preview

Sea Kings also have a gifted and versatile defense that will cause problems for the different offenses they will face this season. With a significant number of all league players returning for their senior year, the Sea Kings will be a strong contender for both a Sunset League title, as well as another CIF championship.

OFFENSE:

The Sea Kings have long been known for having a high powered offense. This season will not be an exception as the Sea Kings have numerous offensive weapons with which they can strike quickly, and often. David Rasor, the talented and highly skilled Quarterback, who is the defending Sunset League Offensive Player of the Year is back for his third season as the play caller. With his experience on the field and knowledge of the Sea Kings offensive system, look for him to have another big season leading the offense. Of course their success on offense is due in large part to their balanced attack. A perfect balance between running and throwing. Getting the majority of the carries this season will be Evan Sanders, a star Running Back who is incredibly physical, and runs the ball with purpose. He garnered first team Sunset League honors last season, and going into this season is rated as the number two Running Back in Orange County by Cal High Sports. Senior Cooper Hoch, a highly skilled Wide Receiver, will be the primary target in the CDM passing attack. Linebacker Mason Kubichek, a multi-purpose athlete, can also be incorporated into the offense at Wide Receiver. The

Sea Kings will also have junior Wide Receiver Russell Weir in the offensive. Weir is an impressive athlete who will complement an already talented Wide Receiver group. Kaleb Annett, a junior, is a very skilled backup Quarterback, who could also see some playing time at Wide Receiver. Trent Merriman, a senior Offensive Lineman is going to see some playing time at Tight End this season. His size, skill and athleticism will give Rasor another quality receiver to throw to, while providing extra blocking on the Offensive Line. The leader on the Offensive Line will be senior Chase Horton, an adroit, and intelligent blocker, whether it be pass or run blocking. Look for the Sea Kings to have a fast, and highly productive offense this season.

DEFENSE:

Corona del Mar has an extremely fast and athletic defensive unit this season. They will use multiple fronts and schemes. Additionally they will employ a defense that will enable players to run various blitz packages from a variety of different places on the field. Their ability to show different looks on defense will give them the ability to neutralize almost any offensive scheme they face. Linebacker Mason Kubichek will be an effective run stopper who can cover a significant amount of space. Kaulin Post, a senior who has great instincts at Linebacker will also be a key contributor on the Sea Kings defense, while skilled junior Christian Brooks will be very active this season making tackles. On the defensive line, the Sea Kings will

be led by senior Ryan Nielsen who is an excellent pass rusher, as well as a highly potent run stopper. The secondary will be patrolled by senior Oliver Ayala who is highly skilled at both pass and run recognition, and is great in coverage as well. This is a highly organized, athletic and intelligent defensive unit that will be extremely active, as well as, effective.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Special Teams unit will be led by junior Colin Pene, who will be in charge of both the kicking and punting duties for the Sea Kings. His ability to split the uprights from various distances will give Corona del Mar extra scoring opportunities, and when it comes to punting, Pene can flip the field for the Sea Kings. Pene will be on the field a lot this season as he also will help the offense while playing Running Back, as well as lending his skills as Linebacker, while on the defensive side of the ball. With the talented group of skill position players on their team, the Sea Kings should also produce some touchdowns while on Special Teams.

CAN’T MISS GAME:

Friday, October 21st, 2022 vs. Corona del Mar

Known as “The Battle of the Bay”, these two longtime rivals slug it out for the right to be known as the superior Football program in Newport Beach. A friendly, yet fierce rivalry, between the Sailors and Sea Kings makes this annual game one of the most entertaining there is in all of Southern California.

OUTLOOK:

There is nothing better or more exciting in California high school Football than winning a CIF championship, and the

season preview

Sailors know that feeling well as they were able to do so this past season. The Sailors have a very competitive nonleague schedule this year, which will include a trip to Hawaii to play Farrington High School of Honolulu. With some key players returning and a motivated, talented team, the Sailors will look to duplicate the success that they had in 2021.

OFFENSE:

The Sailors will have a new helmsman running their offense this season. Quarterback Colton Joseph, a talented passer, with tremendous speed who transferred to Newport Harbor from San Juan Hills will give the Sailors an offensive attack that will create some issues for opposing defenses. Senior Kashton Henjum, who had 108 receptions at Wide Receiver last season, which earned him First Team All Sunset League, and All CIF honors, will be the main target that Joseph will look to in the Sailor’s offense. Henjum is a tremendous route runner, who creates open space to run in, which will enable him to find the end zone often for the Sailors. The multi-talented junior Josiah Lamarque who can play either Wide Receiver and Running Back will make significant contributions to a Sailor offense that returns six starters from last season’s championship team.

DEFENSE:

Newport Harbor will have a variety of different defensive looks that they will employ this year, as there are so many high powered and dynamic offenses in the Sunset League. The leader on defense for the Sailors will be the gifted Defensive Back Carson de Avila who collected multiple awards last year including team MVP, 1st Team All Sunset League, and All CIF. He is a ferocious hitter who led the entire state

of California in tackles for a Defensive Back during the 2021 campaign. Billy Ridley and Garrett Emerson, who both also star on the Newport Harbor Track and Field team, will lock down wide receivers in coverage with impressive speed. Junior Josiah Lamarque will also contribute to this extremely gifted secondary unit with his speed and ball skills. Junior Jacob Carlon will lead a group of Linebackers that mix up their looks and can be effective from numerous formations. The Sailors run various blitz packages with this group and mix in some creative stunts from the Defensive Line. This defensive unit returns ten starters from last year’s team, so they are very familiar with what it takes to play the type of defense that leads to championships.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Special Teams unit will be lead by a strong legged Kicker named Jon Richardson, who is currently ranked #15 in the Chris Sailer Kicking rankings for his class. The talented junior can be seen routinely hitting 55 yard field goals in practice without even using a tee. Junior Noe Avalos will handle the punting duties for the Sailors. Avalos hits booming punts, and averages more than 40 yards per boot, which is right on par with the best NCAA Division I punters.

CAN’T MISS GAMES:

Friday, September 16th, 2022 vs. Marina

The Oilers and Vikings, longtime Huntington Beach rivals, battle it out for the “Victory Trophy”. The winner of this game gets to keep the trophy for the year, along with having bragging rights in the community.

Friday, October 28th, 2022 vs. Newport Harbor

Two neighboring beach communities with strong Football traditions who have a newly developed rivalry, square up against each other in a Sunset League battle. These two schools met in the 2013 CIF Southwest Division Championship game played at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, where the Oilers took home the title. Both teams view this as a “must win” game as they battle for position in the Sunset League standings.

OUTLOOK:

The Oilers look to build on the progress that they made early in the 2021 season. After a hot start (4-2), the Oilers lost their last four games and found themselves on the outside of the playoffs looking in. The Oilers want to make an impact in the Sunset League in 2022 and have the potential to do so. A challenging pre-season schedule will have them ready and poised to make a run in the league, and propel themselves

SunsetRewind.com 83

season preview

into the playoffs this season. The Oilers want to be the most physical and hardest playing team on the gridiron week in and week out. Playing focused and disciplined Football is a priority in the Huntington Beach program. With some talented returning players, and skilled new additions to the team, the Oilers should be a force to be reckoned with in the Sunset League this year.

OFFENSE:

The Oilers will utilize various offensive schemes this season. Look for them to run a spread offense that gives them the ability to operate a high tempo and strike quickly to catch defenses off guard. Additionally, the Oilers will find opportunities to play old school, smash mouth Football, incorporating formations and plays that will be evocative of past eras. Nathan Tauanuu can play either Fullback or Tight End, and will bring additional physicality to the offense. Duante Bell and Vaughn Popp will give the Oilers a lot of versatility at the Quarterback position as both have unique skill sets that will give the coaching staff different options on how to best attack an opposing defense. The Wide Receiver that the Quarterbacks will look to get the ball to will be A.J. Vandermade, a skilled route runner with exceptional hands who has the ability to turn any catch into a big play for the Oilers. Jack Geracitano will handle the majority of the ball carrying duties at Running Back. Geracitano, a junior, is extremely tough, fast, and physical. He has worked hard in the weightroom this offseason, and his efforts should pay great dividends for Huntington Beach. Justin Tauanuu is a highly skilled junior who will anchor the offensive line. Tauanuu is a strong, athletic, and gifted athlete, already having received multiple Pac 12 and Mountain West scholarship offers, he will provide plenty of time for the Quarterbacks to throw, while creating effective running lanes for the backfield.

DEFENSE:

Huntington Beach will most likely employ a 4-2-5 look while on defense. They have great athletes who can fly around the gridiron and make tackles, while getting crucial stops when they are most needed. Nathan Tauanuu will be the leader of the defensive unit for the Oilers. The highly skilled senior Linebacker has the ability to recognize plays early. He is gifted at run stopping, and has the ability to drop back into coverage when needed. He is a great leader who inspires his teammates by the way he plays the game. A.J. Vandermade will be on the field a lot this season, as he will be playing Safety for the Oilers in addition to being the premiere Wide Receiver on the team. Vandermade will use his knowledge of the Wide Receiver position while playing defense, which will give him an extra advantage that many secondary players don’t have. With his athleticism, he will be able to cover a lot of ground and prevent opposing offenses from moving the football.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Special Teams unit is led by four star rated Kicker Jad Othman who has the ability to kick 55 yard field goals. Having a Kicker with the ability of Othman gives the Oilers the capability and luxury to put points on the board from distances that many other teams are unable to. He is also a highly skilled and effective Punter, who will also help the Oilers with gaining valuable field position.

CAN’T MISS GAME:

Friday, October 21st, 2022 vs. Edison

Known as “The Bell Game”, this great rivalry between Fountain Valley and Edison is one of the most celebrated annual games in all of Orange County and Southern California. A game that spans generations in the communities of Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. It is steeped in tradition and is a must see contest between two great schools, both with rich Football traditions and histories.

OUTLOOK:

The Barons look to rebound after a challenging 2021 campaign. They are a highly spirited and motivated group that will certainly learn from last season and continue to improve on a weekly basis. Their pre-season schedule has them playing several quality teams that match up well with the Barons and look to be great opportunities for Fountain Valley to gain momentum heading into Sunset League play. Coach Gutierrez will continue to instill the core values of what it is to be a Fountain Valley Baron - “Blue Pride, Courage, Faith, and Physical Football” is what Fountain Valley is all about. The Barons will be ready and well prepared for their Sunset League schedule this upcoming 2022 campaign.

season preview

OFFENSE:

The Barons return eight different starters on their offense. This bodes well for Fountain Valley as they’ll continue to develop Coach Guitierez’s hard-nosed, run-heavy offensive attack in 2022. Look for last year’s Team MVP, Ben Pham, to make a significant impact on offense for the Barons at Full back. He will share the backfield with Running Back Abdel Habibeh who will provide different looks out of the backfield. Caine Elroy will also lend his blocking and running abilities to the offense when he lines up at Full Back for the Barons. A fun, R.P.O. style offense should prove quite effective for a much improved Fountain Valley Football team.

DEFENSE:

Physical defense is what Coach Guitierez’s team hangs their hat on. Fountain Valley will look to play a 3-4 style front with mixed coverages in the secondary. With seven starters returning, the Barons are poised to continue their tough defensive play from 2021. The Defensive Line will look to break through Offensive Lines with some effective stunts, while holding their ground on run defense. The Barons could cause some problems for opposing offenses with some high intensity

defensive play. Look for the Linebacker unit led by Caine Elroy and Ben Pham with Michael Rocha on the D-Line to be physical and aggressive, especially when given the opportunity to blitz opponents. Abdel Habideh will be the leader in the Secondary, and will get some quality help defending opposing receivers from Nolan Olivares, who can play either Safety or Cornerback. Look for the Baron defense to do some good things this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

With a good kicking game led by Kicker Nolan Olivares, the Barons Special Teams could make some key contributions to the team this year, while putting some points on the scoreboard. Luke Crosby is a solid Punter who will give the Barons a definite advantage when it comes to the battle for field position.

3 GAMES INTO IT... ...HERE’S WHERE WE ARE:

FOUNTAIN VALLEY

After the first three weeks of the season, Fountain Valley finds themselves at 2-1. This is both exciting and promising for the Barons, as they have already eclipsed their win total from last season. Quality victories over Valencia and El Toro show just how improved the Barons are this season. They will look to put some more wins under their belt before heading into league play.

NEWPORT HARBOR

The Sailors started off the 2022 campaign with a successful trip to Hawaii where they emerged victorious over Farrington. Returning to the mainland, they followed up with a victory over Marina. They lost a hard fought battle to the Trinity League’s JSerra, and currently have a 2-1 record. Newport Harbor looks poised to be a competitor in the fierce Sunset League this season.

EDISON

The high powered Edison Chargers are firing on all cylinders. They amassed quality wins over Venice and Leuzinger to start the year, but their most impressive showing was a 34-13 dominating victory over Orange Lutheran of the Trinity League. The Chargers stand at 3-0, and look to keep the train rolling right into the Sunset League and to CIF.

HUNTINGTON BEACH

The Oilers got off to a great start this season with a hard fought victory over Mayfair. They followed up with a win over Summit of Fontana. Their third, and most impressive victory, came against Long Beach Wilson, whom they dominated, winning by a margin of 43-7. Huntington Beach has a 3-0 record, and is not only winning games, but improving each week.

CORONA DEL MAR

The Sea Kings have had to overcome some early season adversity, as they have lost several key players to injuries. This however has not deterred the resolve or determination of Corona del Mar, as they have sprinted out of the gates to a 3-0 record. Impressive victories over Downey, Los Gatos and Palos Verdes show that the Sea Kings are indeed a force to be reckoned with.

LOS ALAMITOS

The Griffins are the prohibitive favorite to win the Sunset League this year. They currently have a 1-2 overall record having lost to a powerhouse from Florida in American Heritage, as well as losing a close fought contest to Basha, the top ranked school from Arizona.
