There were 29 seniors in uniform for Newport’s first home game of the 2022 season vs Trabuco Hills. Just like the week before, the game went down to the final drive, and just like the week be fore, the Sailors came away with a victory.
“The defense has been spec tacular in this 4-1 start. They’ve won games for us. Last week against Capo Valley they were outstanding. Tonight, they bent a little bit, but they didn’t break,” Sailors coach Peter Lofthouse said.
Sailors have officially finished their non-league schedule 4-1.
The Sailors had a bye week last week. They used the extra time to heal up and prepare for tonight’s Sunset League opener vs. Los Alamitos.

It’s Alumni night. Love Love Love seeing everyone.
Tonight’s matchup vs. juggernaut Los Alamitos will definite ly be the toughest game of the year. If you’ve been around for a while, you know that the Griffins boast one of the best teams in the state and several of their players have committed to “Power Five” colleges next year. If you appreciate talent and high-level football, you’re in the right place tonight.
The game tonight will also give us perspective on how far (in a short time) Coach Lofthouse and the staff have come as a program. In Coach Lofthouse’s first year (2018), he had the team competing in the CIF Division 9 playoffs. Then last year (2021) the team not only competed, but won the CIF title in Division 6. We will have to wait until the end of the year to see what division CIF will slot the Sailors this year, but for sure the program is moving up. Los Alamitos is in Division 1 (the highest division) - so to say we have formidable competition tonight is an understatement. It’s fun to see the excitement in our players’ eyes knowing they get to play a Division 1 team - they are ready. #LockIn
As you know, it’s not possible to see this kind of progress without the proper resources. This is where the booster club finds its purpose… to make sure the program has the necessary resources to help the kids reach their full potential.
A huge “Thank You” to those that have given in the past (both time and money) in support of all these neighborhood kids. The program simply would not be possible without the generosity of the Newport/Mesa community.
Here’s how you can help (3 ways):
n If you own a business, consider being a sponsor of the team. We have sponsorships that range from $90.00 to $9,000.00 - literally something for everyone/anyone. Just
n Buy a Christmas Tree from the football/cheer program this year. Check the website for more details - the trees are up there for sale now. Pre-order and you can pick it up the weekend of December 3rd from the 16th street parking lot, or have it delivered by a hard-working Sailor to your home.
n Get a “SUPPORT NEWPORT FOOTBALL” lawn sign for a $50.00 donation. Our goal is 250 signs throughout the neighborhood. Just go to TarFootball.com and click “shop” to easily purchase it. A hard-working Sailor will deliver the sign to your front lawn.
The Newport Harbor Football Boosters is a 501(c)(3) non-profit (Federal Tax ID # 33-0010005) and your donation is tax deduct ible, or we can give you a marketing invoice. Our mission, as a booster club, is to provide resources to Coach Lofthouse and his staff to keep building Newport Harbor High School Football into one of the most respected public-school football programs in the country for our student athletes. To all Alumni, Parents, and Community Supporters… Welcome!
This is NHHS’s 93rd year of playing football. As of this writing, Coach Loft house and the football staff have our varsity team at 4-1.
It’s worth mentioning that we have two other teams in the football program that are also 4-1.
The JV team, after losing on the road in Hawaii in the opener, have rattled off four straight wins.
And the freshman team, whose only loss was to JSerra of the Trinity League, is also 4-1. That’s a 16-3 record “pro gram-wide” as we enter into league play.
So football is off to a great start - and so is the school. This has by far been the best year on memory as we “get back to normal” and enjoy all the enriching expe riences that high school has to offer.
Tonight is our Alumni night. Many of you have come from the 2nd Annual Alumni tailgate party at the ENC. We have special guests here like the great Coach Mike Giddings (1982-86) and there will also be a moment tonight when the football team dedicates their season to Horace Silva, class of 1945, who played Tar Ball during World War II (see page 24 for the story).
I will echo the cover of tonight’s program… GRATEFUL. Let’s demonstrate GRATEFUL to be apart of this great school and community by supporting the players in GIVING OUR BEST on the following fronts:
n Let’s show OUR BEST RESPECT to the hard work and competitive spirit of our young men and women as they compete—by modeling good sportsmanship and proper decorum at all of our games and events.
n Let’s offer OUR BEST HOSPITALITY to the guests that we host at Davidson Field. We have the most beautiful high school setting in all the land (just look up at the sky at kickoff). Let’s be thankful for that and make sure our guests feel welcome.
n Finally, let’s give OUR BEST EFFORT in all things we do as Sailors, whether that be on the field, in the classroom, or around the community.
On Alumni night, I would like to thank the dedicated alumni and fans of Newport Har bor High School that have come out to root on the team, band and cheer. Go Sailors! O
Sean Boulton, Principal
Welcome “back-to-back” at David son Field.
Our home opener (senior night) vs. Trabuco Hills was an amazing night. We celebrated 30 seniors playing in their final season with a packed home-side stadium. The TAR PIT was, as they say, rocking.
Thank you students, parents and fans for supporting the program. The players really feed off the energy (and so do the coaches).
We finished up the pre-season with a respectable (4-1) record. Victories over Farrington (Hawaii), Marina, Capistrano Valley and Trabuco Hills. Our single loss was against JSerra. The “level of play” thus far has been solid and fun to watch.
Tonight we open Sunset League play by hosting Los Alamitos. The Sunset League is a whole new “level of play” - so buckle up. The Los Al Griffins are loaded with talent and their players can match the level of any high school in the country. As a matter of fact, there are approximate ly thirty (30) five-star recruits in the USA this year, and two of them are wearing Los Al uniforms (#7 and #14).
This is a great opportunity for the Sail ors. We have a team that loves to compete at the highest level and tonight definitely
gives them a chance to do so.
There will be a lot of press on tonight’s game. My hope is, win or lose, that it’s a spirited game and the effort and sports manship on the field represents Newport Harbor High School and what our com munity stands for.
Finally, as with all home games, please make sure you stay until the end when we sing our alma mater.
In case you’re not sure of the words, here is a study guide:
“Hail, our Alma Mater, to her grey and blue; We give her love and honor for her spirit’s true. (it’s true)
Our loyalty to Harbor High ever will our standard be. We’ll fight for the night, so hail Harbor High!”
I’d like to thank Dr. Boulton and admin istration, teachers and booster club for taking such an interest in the football program. Let’s play some football. O
Peter Lofthouse, Head Football CoachGetting a few minutes with Coach Peter Lofthouse is easier than you might think.
After spending more than eight years at the JUCO ranks, including a historic season at San Diego’s Mesa College where in three short years the program went from 3-7 to 9-2 and won its first bowl game in over 30 years, Coach Loft house has settled into Newport Harbor High School and is our 5th year head football coach.
“Anytime someone wants to talk about what we’re trying to accomplish at Newport Harbor,” Coach Lofthouse says, “I’m Interested.”
Coach Lofthouse believes that the game of football, at the high school level, is a teaching tool and an oppor tunity to change the lives of young men through experience. It’s a unique opportunity for teenagers to not only learn values that work on the football field, but any athletic field… and more importantly, values that they can instill into their lives well beyond their high school years.
These values are called “The 5 F’s” and it’s instilled in EVERYTHING we do.
Faith in yourself. Faith in your team mates. Faith in your coaches. BUY IN to what we’re doing on this football team.
Protecting your immediate family (e.g. Mom, Dad, siblings, relatives) as well in cluding your teammates as your family.
Aligning with buddies that have high morals and good character. Friends (and teammates) that hold each other accountable for their actions.
Having fun and playing hard and play ing to the best of your ability.
Finishing everything you start. Whether it be homework, a test or “playing until the whistle” – give it your best effort.
Meet Horace Silva, NHHS class of 1945.
He played football and ran track and was apparently very good at both.
He’s also an encyclopedia of NHHS and Costa Mesa-Newport local history.
A few years back he mentioned that his “lucky number 47” was torn from him during a football game in 1944 during his senior season. He was always bummed that he couldn’t get his number 47 jersey replaced due to the war rationing and was given number 49 instead.
His two older brothers were Marines in the war at the time – one in the Pacific and the other in Europe.
Nearly 80 years later, thanks to the efforts of Principal Boulton, Coach Lofthouse, and an amazing varsity team, Horace Silva finally had a new lucky number 47 jersey hand-delivered to him at his home.
The players mounted it on his wall!
Horace was thrilled and shared some of his incredible stories with all who were there. He teared up and smiled from ear to ear.
Upon learning that the 2022 season was dedicated to his honor, Horace said, “Ya know, I wasn’t a great player, but I always worked hard, never missed a prac tice or a game, and never stopped trying to help the team. And, please tell those boys to hit hard no matter what and to keep hitting hard no matter what.”
Horace finally got his “lucky number 47” back after all these years. O
