+ Last Year’s Returning First and Second AllSunset League Players
At 7:00 a.m. on January 2, 2021, at an un-addressed location in Riverside County, The Sunset Argonauts Football Club (see page 10) stepped onto a barely-finished 100-yard turf “field of dreams” football field to kick off a game vs. The Southwestern Warriors.
Huh? Who?
The cancellation of high school football in California created, more or less, an underground community of football players, coaches and parents that quickly organized a *league* where kids could play the sport they loved. No stadiums. No cheerleaders. No press box. No field goal posts. No parking lot. Just discounted team jerseys, a few referees and football games.
Oh, and two broadcasters.
In order to get the action to family and friends, we hired broadcasters Alex Crawford and Howard Croom to do live radio/streaming. Alex and Howard would drive to the field of dreams and set up their six-foot plastic table before sunrise. The generator needed a long extension cord so it was not too loud and interrupt the broadcast. The Internet connection was just good enough. Family and friends got to hear the game.
All in all, roughly 1,400 players from all over California made up 32 teams in the Winner Circle Champions League (WCCL). Eight games were played on Saturday. Eight games were played on Sunday. Alex and Howard would call four or five games in a day, quickly studying rosters and asking players and coaches how to pronounce some of the more difficult last names.
Everyone learned a lot during those weeks at field of dreams. One thing that really hit me was how much people LOVED coverage of high school football. And with so many new friends from the Sunset League schools, it was just a natural fit to invest in Alex and Howard and see what they could do.
I hope you enjoy the magazine.

The Sunset League is returning a ton of talent for the Fall 2021 season. Of the 19 All-League Awards given out, nine were given to underclassmen. 35 of the All-League First and Second Team spots were given to underclassmen, over half. From the two five-star recruits at Los Alamitos, Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon, to the only freshman to make an AllLeague team, Newport Harbor’s dynamic Josiah Lamarque, the Sunset League is loaded in fall 2021. Keep an eye on every team this season because eventually a lot of these kids will be playing on Saturdays. A chosen few will be playing on Sundays.
Below are the returning players who won All-League Awards and were selected to First and Second Team All-League honors (divided by team).

When the state shut down football in California last fall, the Argos were formed by calling Sunset League coaches and asking if they knew any players that wanted to play football. A few joined, then a few more… and by Christmas Eve (the second practice) there were 57 players and each Sunset League team was represented (except Los Alamitos, who formed their own team). Because the community colleges were also not playing football, the staff was from local JUCO coaches (CIF does not allow high school coaches to coach “club” teams) that were happy be back on the gridiron. The Argos lost their first two games but ended with four straight wins to end the season 4-2.
Many of the players below can be found in this magazine on their respective high school team (and several have graduated as it was their senior year). Alex and Howard would broadcast the game from the end zone.
Season Preview by Howard Croom
Coach Fenton is entering his sixth season as head coach of the Los Alamitos Griffins. The 2021 season marks Coach Fenton’s 25th year as a head football coach. His impressive resume includes a CIF championship with Cypress High School in 2007, when he also won California state coach of the year. Prior to coming to Los Al, Coach Fenton spent three seasons as the head coach at Fountain Valley High School. Fenton took reins of the Los Alamitos program in 2016, succeeding legendary head coach of 37 years, Coach John Barnes.
Coach Fenton is a graduate of Cypress High School where he played football and also ran track.

Can’t Miss Games:
10.8.2021 vs. Edison (Memorial Stadium at Westminster High School)
We really don’t expect anyone to beat the Griffins this year, but if anyone can do it, it might be the Chargers. Edison was the only team that kept the game close last year and will be looking to avenge their seven-point loss. This game will most likely settle the Sunset League title.
Outlook:
The Los Al Griffins enter the 2021 season with expectations as high as any team in the state. They have unfinished business from the Spring 2021 season after dominating the competition, going 6-0, and not getting a chance to test their skills in the playoffs against other elite teams. The Griffins return a majority of their starters from last season and plan to
pick up right where they left off in the Spring.
The Griffins have one of the most dynamic offenses in the state. They return Sunset League co-MVP’s Malachi Nelson and Makai Lemon, both five star prospects who’ve verbally committed to the University of Oklahoma. They also have Servite transfer Ethan O’Connor (DB/WR) who has compiled offers from SEC, ACC, and Pac-12 schools after his sophomore year. Other weapons at Coach Fenton’s disposal include Sunset League All-Purpose Player of the Year Gavin Porch, Bosco-transfer Nygel Osborne at running back, and 5-star transfer safety and WR Deandre Moore Jr. who left Desert Pines High of Las Vegas to play with familiar faces on the Griffins, many of whom played Pop Warner football together at very young age. Moore is in discussions with Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame, USC, and pretty much every other college football blue blood you can name. David Main, Cash Koepke and Robert Hamilton will anchor the offensive line, giving Nelson and his arsenal plenty of time to open the playbook.
Los Al’s defense dominated their opponents last season only giving up 12 points per game and holding three of their six opponents to one touchdown or less. If there’s one hole to be pointed out, the Griffins graduated three of their four starting linebackers (only Achilles Campos-Barret returning). As the Griffins look to continue their momentum this fall, they will be without Co-Linebacker of the Year Tyler DeLeon, as well as First Team All-Sunset League performers Mason Burt, Darrien Wingfield, and JoJo Nuez. Despite losing key contributors to graduation, there’s no shortage of talent or experience on the Griffins’ defense as they return Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year Adam Tomcyzk, First Team All-Sunset League defensive back Brian Jurado, First Team All-Sunset League defensive end Sinn Brennan, and Second Team All-Sunset League defensive back Isaiah Dorsey.
Tyler Mclachlan will handle the kicking duties this year. We don’t expect to see a lot of punting by Los Alamitos in 2021, but when they do line up in punt formation, QB Malachi Nelson will probably be the punter.
Head Coach: Jeff Grady
Jeff Grady is entering his fifth season as the Edison Chargers head coach and brings Division I college football coaching pedigree to the Sunset League. Coach Grady graduated from Edison in 1998, played quarterback at Fresno State, and went on to work his way up the coaching ranks for the Bulldogs eventually becoming the offensive coordinator under legendary coach Pat Hill.

Can’t Miss Games:
9.3.21 vs. Orange Lutheran (LeBard Stadium at Orange Coast College)
Anytime we see a chance for a Sunset League team to go head-to-head with a Trinity League foe, we’re licking our chops, even if the Lancers did only win one game in the shortened Spring 2021 season. This will be an early test for
a Chargers team that was only one score away from winning the Sunset League last season.
10.8.21 vs. Los Alamitos
(Memorial Stadium at Westminster High School)
When these two teams met in March (COVID-spring season) it wasn’t yet known that this game would determine the 2020-21 Season Sunset League Champion. Edison still had to survive five OTs with Corona del Mar. Los Alamitos was victorious in this meeting 27-20 and it was their only real test of the short season. With a new quarterback, and over a dozen starters graduated, can the Chargers keep it close again and potentially even pull off the upset?
With a senior heavy team in 2020-21, the Chargers, along with Los Al, are one of the teams we’re most disappointed didn’t get a full season in the COVID shortened year. Even with QB Braeden Boyles gone to Benedictine College, one can expect Jeff Grady’s well-oiled Chargers to pick up right where they left off. Mater Dei transfers Parker Awad (QB) and Ashton Hurley (WR) should plug right into this electric Edison offense and keep the Chargers as the main threat to challenge Los Alamitos for the league title.
Tyler Gioia was being groomed to be the starting QB, but tore his ACL in the spring. But fear not, the Chargers are breaking in a new QB with junior Mater Dei transfer Parker Awad. His arm has looked like a literal cannon in 7-on-7 play. Awad was connecting countless times with the all-star high jumper Tyler Hampton, dynamic Nico Brown (40 catches for 664 yards and eight TDs in the short season), stout receiver Tucker Tripp, and his fellow former Monarch, the bleach blonde Ashton Hurley. The biggest question marks remain at running back and on an offensive line that lost studs Jacob Parsons and Ryan Easterday. Charger fans should take solace knowing that Coach Grady said the returning offensive starter he’s most excited about in fall 2021 is lineman Jackson Graf. Nathan Gates (6’5” 250lbs) and Zach Gruwell will accompany Graf on the O-Line with first-year starting center Luke Jones.
The Edison Chargers allowed an average of only 17 points per game in their Spring 2021 campaign. Returning to give QBs fits is the speedy pass rush machine, Austin Grbic. The Gregory Brothers (Peyton and Logan) have been playing with each other (literally) their whole lives and the athleticism of
Troy Fletcher in the backfield means to watch for a bunch of turnovers from any Edison opponent. Junior Dom Lopez has looked beefy at 7-on-7, as well as up-and-coming Jackson Irwin (strong safety). Make no doubt, the Chargers are willing (and able) to punish teams that come over the middle on them.
The multi-talented football player and returning starter Troy Fletcher has been getting most of the punter action in practice. Fletcher receiving the long snap on 4th down will give punt return teams something to think about. Nicholas Preston (Jr.) and Bradley Schmidt (So.) are battling back and forth for the starting PAT/kickoff and field goal duties.
Head Coach: Dan O’Shea
Dan O’Shea arrived at Corona del Mar in 2011 (from Trabuco Hills High School) as defensive coordinator and took over as head coach in 2015. Since then the Sea Kings have built a culture around a “unified approach to football in an era of a selfish society.” Such a culture starts when interviewing Coach O’Shea as he immediately inserts that Offensive Coordinator Kevin Hettig shares head coaching duties (as associate head coach). O’Shea guides the defense. Hettig guides the offense.
Corona del Mar football made California football news in 2019 when they went a perfect 16-0 and brought a state championship home to Eastbluff. Other noteworthy facts about CdM is the locker room has two ex-NFL players on the roster (OL coach Sam Baker and Safeties coach Chris Conte)

Battle of the Bay 10.22.21 vs. Newport Harbor (Davidson Field at Newport Harbor high School)
The Sea Kings haven’t lost the Battle of the Bay since 2012. That eight consecutive wins ties the longest win streak in the rivalry’s 59-year history, when Newport ran off eight straight in the 1970’s. Last season the Sea Kings won 10-7, the closest Battle of the Bay since Peter Lofthouse took over as head coach at Newport Harbor. Expect a fierce battle, as always, in one of the best high school football rivalry games in the state.
Coach Dan O’Shea explains, “Everything starts with Battle of the Bay. That sets the tone for 365 days of the year.”
10.15.21 vs. Edison (Sheue Field at Huntington Beach High School)
Corona del Mar will seek revenge for last season’s five-OT 44-41 loss to the Chargers on October 15th and if it’s anything remotely like the last meeting, it promises to be a barn burner. CdM junior QB David Rasor (returning starter) said that the Sea Kings gained a ton of experience in that game and it will be fun to watch these two upper echelon Sunset League teams go at it again.
Outlook:
The shortened 6-game COVID/Spring year for CdM was one coming off a perfect 16-0 state championship season. There were questions about whether or not O’Shea and Hettig’s Sea Kings would be in a rebuilding year. Corona del Mar did not need to rebuild, they simply reloaded and ended the season with only two blemishes on their record. The Sea Kings look to continue that momentum after getting junior QB/RB duo David Rasor and Evan Sanders crucial experience over the
spring’s six games. Dan O’Shea has built a selfless championship culture at Corona del Mar High School so even though there are big questions to be answered (namely, replacing five senior offensive line starters), few teams win as consistently as CdM. Look for senior captain Charlie Mannon, who Coach O’Shea calls a “superhero human” to do a little bit of everything on the gridiron for the Sea Kings this season.
Offense:
Junior QB David Rasor will look to build off a spring campaign where he threw for 15 TDs and ran for three more. He’ll be aided by one of Orange County’s top running backs, fellow junior Evan Sanders. None of the wide receivers put up big numbers last season but expect at least one of John Tipton (Sr.), Max Lane (Sr.), Cooper Hoch (Jr.), or Russell Weir (So.) to have a breakout year. The Sea Kings secret weapon may be senior tight end, and basketball player, Scott Truninger who is a massive 6’6 240 lbs and for the past two seasons has been stuck behind Mark Redman and Scott Giuliano, who are both playing college football currently for Washington and Harvard respectively.
Defense:
Despite losing Sunset League Defensive Player of the Year Tommy Griffin, the Sea Kings have six returning all-league players on the defensive side of the ball. The heart and soul of the defense is outside linebacker Charlie Mannon but he’ll have experience helping at every position group, including playmaker Mason Kubichek (Jr.) who stripped the ball from a Sailors receiver in the final two minutes of last year’s BoTB game to earn the tough 10-7 Sunset League victory. Linebacker Nathan Bloom (Sr.) and DE and “sack specialist” DE/DL Dylan Wood (Sr.) and three-year starting CB Jake Simkins (Sr.) are poised to give opposing offensive fits. Sunset Rewind is always interested in reporting Trinity League transfers, so two new defensive guys to keep eyes on are Jayden Rosenhain, a senior linebacker transfer from Santa Margarita and Brady Sarkisian, a junior linebacker from Mater Dei.
The Sea Kings will miss graduate Dane Voorhees, who with a career record of 12-16 on field goals and 133-135 on PATs was one of the most consistent kickers in recent Sunset League history.
Punting, again this year, will be handled by QB David Rasor. The kicking game looks like a “by committee” status with Luke Ianni (Jr.) and Collin Pene (So.) platooning, at least to start the season.
Season Preview by Howard Croom
Head Coach: Peter Lofthouse
Peter Lofthouse is entering his fourth season as the Sailors head football coach. Coach Lofthouse brought college-level experience (and supporting staff) to NHHS when he replaced legendary 32-year head coach Jeff Brinkley back in 2018.
Lofthouse was head coach at junior college San Diego Mesa for three years (finishing 9-2 overall his last year while going 3-7 in each of the previous two seasons). A similar trend, Lofthouse was 3-6-1 in his first year, 9-4 in his second year, and in the shortened COVID year finished 3-3.
Fourth years are usually “telling years” for programs so look for the Sailors to be all hands on deck in 2021.

Battle of the Bay 10.22.21 vs. Newport Harbor (Davidson Field at Newport Harbor high School)
One of the most looked-forward-to events in the Newport/ Mesa community is when the Sailors and Sea Kings kickoff at Davidson Field. Barring COVID restrictions, some 6,000 people will show up to watch the 60th match between these two in an annual can’t-miss game.
The Sailors are 2-1 vs. the Oilers in the Lofthouse era as these two teams have recently fought for that fourth spot in the Sunset League standings. Look for this game to have Sunset League standing and playoff implications.
Outlook:
The team returns five all-league performers from a dozen Sailors earning honors last season. In his fourth year at the helm, Sailors Head Coach Peter Lofthouse says his program has developed a level of depth in the roster it hasn’t had before.
“We had a lot of young guys who started for us. We had six to eight sophomores start in Sunset League level games. Technically, four freshmen played varsity for us and two of them were starters,” Lofthouse points out.
With a mix of veteran leadership and young athleticism, the Sailors are hoping to improve upon their .500 spring campaign but will need to address major holes at the running back position and in their secondary.
Offense:
The Sailors’ offensive line is as good as we’ve seen in years
(Nate Peters, Elijah Zeigler and Grayson Simon all look capable of playing at the next level) and the beef up front should give senior QB Nick Kim the time he needs to throw to a talented core of receivers. Junior rising star Kashton Henjum and sophomore Josiah Lamarque showed unique talent as underclassmen in the spring season. They will be aided by senior Duke Starnes and player-to-watch Zach Zamora. There are questions about who will get the majority of the touches in the running game. Look for junior Payton Irving and senior Hayden Farley to share time, at least at the beginning of the season.
Defense:
Defensively, the Sailors will have to backfill MVP Erik Hehl who terrorized the league last year. Returning starters Carson de Avila (Jr.) and Connor Chenier (Sr.) will anchor the defense. Whoever gets the nod at the cornerback positions will be a first-time-starter as the Tars graduated both of their DBs from last season so look at the DL to put extra pressure on the QB this year to force quicker throws.
Newcomer Noe Avalos (soccer player) seems to be getting most of the snaps as kicker and punter. Sophomore Jon Richardson will also handle some of the kicking duties. We’ll need to keep an eye on this as the kicking game is a bit unknown at this time.

Head Coach: Brett Brown
Coach Brown is entering his sixth season as head coach of the Oilers and 16th overall season as a member of the coaching staff. Prior to becoming head coach in 2016, Brown served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, including in 2013 when the Oilers won a CIF Southern Section championship.
Coach Brown is a 2003 graduate of Marina High School where he captained both the varsity football and basketball teams during his senior year. In the Fall of 2003 as a freshman business student at Cal State Fullerton, Coach Brown began his coaching career at Ocean View High School.

Can’t Miss Game:
10.1.2021 vs. Fountain Valley (Sheue Field at Huntington Beach High School)
The Oilers open up Sunset League play on October 1st with a rivalry game against Fountain Valley. Coming off of a Week six bye, Coach Brown’s team will be well rested and well prepared and looking to make a statement against the improving Barons.
Outlook:
Despite an underwhelming 2-4 Spring season, Huntington Beach is a team that’s headed in the right direction and looking to upset the Sunset League powerhouses this fall. The Oilers come into the 2021 season with a lot of experience and talent all over the field. They’ll benefit from having a full 10-week season with five non-conference games that will help them prepare for the challenge of Sunset League competition. The Oilers return seven all-league performers from last
season. Brett Brown and his team have the same goals every year: to be the hardest working team and most physical team they can be. Their team motto is W.I.N. – work hard, integrity, no excuses.
Offense:
The Oilers return senior QB AJ Perez who split time with graduated-senior Joey Gentlella last year. Coach Brown, the Oilers head coach and offensive coordinator, has a ton of confidence in Perez and believes the offense will take a step forward with Perez taking over as the full-time guy. The Oilers also return offensive Swiss Army knife Hideo Ray who was First Team All-Sunset League as a junior, as well as team MVP Tyler Moses who was also First Team All-Sunset League and did a little bit of everything on offense for the Oilers. Anchoring the offensive line will be seniors William Burke and Rylan Vibbard.
Defense:
The Oilers defense started out strong last season but struggled as they got into the heart of their Sunset League schedule giving up an average of 37 points per game. They were a young group last year that looks to build on what they learned in the spring. They’re led by senior strong safety and team captain Tyler Moses as well as senior All-Sunset league middle linebacker EJ Riederich. The Oilers also expect to get major contributions from juniors like AJ Vandermade and Nate Tauanuu, as well as three-year starter Eli Anderson who will be moving from linebacker to safety.
Special Teams:
Junior specialist Jad Othman will handle most of the kicking and punting for the Oilers this Fall, with Tyler Moses taking on some of the punting duties as well. The primary return guys will be Qunicy Hawkins and AJ Vandermade, though Hideo Ray and Tyler Moses will also get some action in the return game.
Season Preview by Alex Crawford
David Gutierrez is entering his first season as head coach of the Fountain Valley Barons after being hired just days before the start of 2021 fall camp. Gutierrez came from the great Orange County football tradition at Servite High School where he was a linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. Gutierrez was Costa Mesa High School’s head coach in 2018 but started his coaching career at Fountain Valley in 2010 where he did a little bit of everything; coaching running backs, strength and conditioning, and was the JV head coach before departing in 2013.
To Coach Gutierrez, who also is a PE teacher at Fountain Valley High School, this return to the Barons is a return home. He understands that Fountain Valley has a historic winning tradition and he hopes to establish a blue collar work ethic for a team that comes from one of the more blue collar areas in the Sunset League.

Can’t Miss Game:
Battle for the Bell 10.22.21 vs. Edison (LeBard Stadium at Orange Coast College)
The Barons lost 40-0 to the Chargers last year and haven’t won since 2004 but Coach Gutierrez will have his guys fired up for this rivalry game. Even though this rivalry game has been lopsided as of late, expect a raucous crowd from the Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley communities. Coach Gutierrez understands the importance of keeping local families engaged in Baron Football and this game is a part of that.
Outlook:
More than any team in the Sunset League, the Barons suffered from the lack of a preseason in the shortened COVID spring season. While they will still struggle with the gauntlet that is the Sunset League, first year head coach David Gutierrez is putting his team through a hard offseason so that “when things get difficult later, [they] have that experience,” Gutierrez said. Gutierrez took over the program in late July and has instilled his four cornerstones of Fountain Valley Barons
football: Blue Pride, Courage, Faith, and Physical Football. Expect the Barons to be a team that does the little things well and fights hard in every game.
Offense:
The Barons offense will break in a new QB this season with junior Owen Tomko taking over for Second Team All-Sunset League Jimmy Russell who graduated in June. The entire Fountain Valley team is junior heavy with just six seniors on the roster, but elder statesman Drew Reyes brings two years of varsity experience to the WR corps and will make some big plays this season. Also, expect senior Tyler Nowicki, who transferred from Virginia last season but was out with a broken collarbone, to be a name Sunset League defenses remember. Junior running back Ben Pham has been putting in extra hours in the weight room this offseason and looks to build on a sophomore campaign where he showed flashes of being an explosive back.
Defense:
The Barons defense looks to improve upon a 2021 spring season where they gave up an average of 47 points per game. Junior middle linebacker Caine Elroy will set the tone for this defense alongside senior linebacker and returning defensive MVP Nick Mendez. Mendez will most likely be playing college football at a smaller school next fall and will be a force to be reckoned with in the Sunset League regardless of opponent. Another player to keep an eye on is senior linebacker Jacob Stinnett who transferred to FV in August from Kansas where he was a state wrestling champion.
Special Teams:
Punting and kicking duties will be handled by sophomore specialist Andrew Osorio. Given the inconsistency of high school kickers and punters, developing a consistent young player at that position could be big for the Barons over the next few seasons. Do-it-all man Nick Mendez will punt occasionally as well.
