Message on COVID-19 Vaccine Scams

The vaccine is only available on the NHS and is free of charge.

The NHS will never ask you for details about your bank account or to pay for the vaccine. If you receive an email, text message or phone call purporting to be from the NHS and you are asked to provide financial details, this is a scam.

The NHS will never arrive unannounced at your home to administer the vaccine and they will never ask to see personnel documents such as your passport, driving licence, bills or pay slips.

If you believe you are the victim of a fraud, please report this to Action Fraud as soon as possible by calling 0300 123 2024 or visiting www.actionfraud.police.uk

Chichester Neighbourhood Policing Team My name is PCSO Richard Moorey and I am your local officer.

I have been a PCSO for 13 ½ years and seen my role change dramatically over that time. I have found the role to be exciting, inspiring and at times a challenge but overall it has been an amazing and rewardable experience.

As some of you may be aware some time ago we lost our areas. It is with great pleasure I can confirm that we now have our dedicated areas back.

I will be covering Oving, Tangmere and the Swanfield Estate.

At this time it is only myself but it is hoped in the future there will be one more PCSO’s to cover the area.

My priorities are to provide a visible and reassuring presence in all of my areas and to reduce, prevent and deter crime and Anti-social behaviour in your area.

I will also able to offer crime prevention advice and support to victims.

One of the most important things you can help me with is the reporting of incidents. This is fundamental to my role as a PCSO as it enables me to deal with local issues.

When making a report to Police it is important you use the 999 (if it’s an emergency) or 101 (non-emergency) phone numbers or via the Sussex Police website, as the report will be recorded correctly and I will be able deal with it accordingly.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties The outline planning application for the Tangmere SDL was submitted to Chichester District Council for its consideration in November 2020. A decision on the application is expected in spring 2021.

Community Wardens

Who could have known this time last year what was in store for us all!

We were all going about our daily lives as we always had, taking for granted that we could see friends and family, go (non-essential) shopping, visit cafes, bars and restaurants and then Covid struck and no one could have prepared themselves for what was to come.

There have been a lot of highs and lows. Some of the highs being how communities came together to help each other out, how we looked out for our neighbours and people who up until then had been strangers. Clapping for the NHS was lovely with people all out on their doorsteps showing their appreciation. There are lots of inspirational stories about how people had chosen to spend their time in lockdown whether that was taking food parcels to people in isolation, learning a new language or how to play an instrument, and there was a lot of baking done! For those who had to work from home our pets where mostly glad that we were home a lot, maybe not so much the ones that sneak onto to sofa while you were out.

I’m sure you would agree that Captain Sir Tom Moore was a highlight in the darkest days of 2020 and someone we all came to love and respect with his can do attitude and stoic resolve to keep going no matter what. He not only raised a lot of money for the NHS but he raised a lot of spirits too. It was so sad to hear that he has died and although we did not know him personally it felt like a nation had lost a true hero. RIP Captain Sir Tom Moore your legacy will live on for a long time to come.

So here we are in 2021, still in lockdown but with much more hope now that with the vaccines there is light at the end of the tunnel. The lows of not being able to be with our families and friends will eventually be a thing of the past.

I know that some people are struggling at the moment, be that with mental health, loneliness, isolation or any of the number of issues that Covid has raised, or simply because it has gone on for so long. If you are struggling please pick up the phone and ask for help, if you are worried about someone then also pick up the phone and check on them.

Chairman’s Report At January’s “virtual”

meeting of the council, the decision to offer the village centre as a mass vaccination centre to the NHS was confirmed, and residents will have seen how quickly the NHS got the centre up and running. There will always be teething issues when a project is launched so fast, but I am sure that residents recognise the overwhelming need to get the vaccine out as soon as possible.

We are discussing traffic, parking and queue management with the NHS in order to ease some of the issues. Local residents who have already received their jab at Tangmere have reported favourably about the arrangements.

At the same meeting we were able to set the precept charge for 2021-22, at £86,130. This includes provision for professional and legal advice on the various planning issues that 2021 will bring along. We also set aside funds to cover annual tree surveys and associated maintenance work on the various trees around the community that are our responsibility.

There have been a number of meetings and presentations between CDC the Parish Council and the Developers as the Outline Planning Application for the Strategic Site moves towards determination.

Issues we covered include the future management of the Public Open Spaces, and the options for community and sport and leisure facilities to serve the expanded village.

In addition to these, there are discussions regarding the timing of the provision for Allotments, the plans for the expansion of the Military Aviation Museum and the provision of onsite as well as offsite cycle routes.

These issues will be presented to the residents by way of a public display and meeting where all aspects can be brought together for consideration, once the restrictions arising from the current pandemic relax.

It seems very risky to be planning for public events later in the year, but if there is to be a Summer Fair, then dates need to be set and activities booked. Having had to cancel every village activity for 2020 it seems daunting to plan again for an event only to see national restrictions cancel such events.

Good enough is good enough For some, and I certainly have experience of this, we have been raised to believe that perfection is necessary for recognition and connection. This idea is so widespread that society has taken it on, think of Ofsted and the apparent need for every school to be outstanding. No rooms for satisfactory in this world. And this translates to the pressure that we feel to be everything to everyone.

This is more commonly reported in women, where there can still be an expectation for them to work full time, manage the home and raise the children. Even when the partner takes some of the load, the burden can still be on the Superwoman to be everything to everyone and to do it perfectly. I have, however, also taken part in conversations with men where they say exactly the same thing. They are working, doing some of the jobs at home, fixing the things the kids break and feeling the responsibility of earning enough money for the family (even if the woman is working full time) and they absolutely can’t show that the burden is too great, the need to be Superman can be deeply ingrained.

If we are not being the super working parent home schooler, the heroic keyworker, the fabulous fixer or a superstar home learner what are we? If perfection is the only answer then on those days that we are not heroic, feeling strong and on top of everything, we must therefore be failing.

What if we are “good enough.” What if we don’t have to be superheroes or superstars?

But here’s a thought, What if we can tell ourselves we are “good enough”, that we don’t have to be superheroes or superstars?

What if we can get to the end of the day happy that today we were “good enough”, that we did what we could with what we had available. What if, instead of showing everyone only our superhero side, we owned our own imperfect truth that today we are “good enough”?

Happy Healthy Easter Bunnies Making cookies is a great family fun event - but with so many dietary issues around now take a closer look at the ingredients you use and see if you can make your own healthier recipe!

This traditional shortbread offers healthy alternatives in brackets.

You will know what your families dietary issues are and therefore probably recognise where you should make changes.

Experimenting with food is a great way for kids to learn about food. Let them taste and try.Some items will change the consistency of your dough – oil or honey for instance, or mashed banana instead of butter, so you will need to be aware of that and perhaps add more fibre (fine oats) to balance that!

Makes about 20 Ingredients: 110g unsalted butter, at room temperature (veg oil/ coconut oil, nut butters, mashed banana, fig or date puree) 50g caster sugar (honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, Stevia is the only recommended natural sweetener) few drops vanilla essence 2tsp lemon zest and 2tsp juice 150g plain flour, sieved (whole wheat, nut or coconut flour - not sieved!)

Lemon topping: 3tbsp caster sugar (see above – or allow just a little for this) 3tsp shredded lemon zest Method: 1. Gently knead or blend the butter, sugar, essence, 1tsp lemon zest and 2tsp juice together. Then work in the flour. You can do this in a food processor but it should still be quite tacky at the end and don’t overmix or the dough beomes tough and hard when cooked.

2. Turn the mixture onto a lightly floured surface and gently bring it all together.

Wrap or cover and chill for 20 minutes.

3. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas Mark 4. Roll out the dough quite thinly, between two sheets of greaseproof or baking paper if it is still quite soft. Cut into animal shapes. Bake thin animal cookies for 15-20 minutes until firm but not coloured. Will firm up more on cooling Topping: For a lemony topping to the Easter Bunnies remove fine shreds of lemon zest either with a zester or the finest side of a grater. Mix this with a little caster sugar and sprinkle on the cookies half way through cooking or just at the end.

Tip: Use a firm lemon for zesting, wipe first unless you buy unwaxed. Remove zest first with the fine side of the grater then you can juice.

As you will be aware, the start to our Spring term has been somewhat different to what we had hoped and expected. Overnight our TPA community clicked into a new way of working through remote/online learning, while the school remains open for Vulnerable and Key Worker children. Last term many classes had started to complete homework through our online platform, enabling children to feel more confident about this change.

The staff have been working hard to tailor activities that are easily accessible to families working at home as well as ensuring that they meet the children’s learning needs. We are very grateful for the support and engagement of our families that has enabled this new platform to best support the children’s home learning.

Supporting learning within the community Now more than ever, we are aware of how difficult home learning can be for families, especially if there are not enough devices for each child to access a computer/ the internet. In the Autumn term we set up a GoFundMe page to enable us to create a community set of Chrome books that families can have on loan to support their children with their homework and/ or home learning activities. We have had a fantastic response so far to this fund, which has enabled us to purchase 4 Chromebooks for families in our locality.

Home Learning The children have all been working hard with their online home learning tasks. In Year 3 they have been looking at the features needed when writing diary entries……

Monday 20th November Dear Diary, Today was a very scary day. I thought I was going to be eaten by a big bad mouse that was as big as a mountain. When I got up in the morning, I went for a walk in the deep dark woods. Wanted to get a snack because I was sooooo hungry. Next, I heard a noise. When I looked around I saw the shadow of a terrifying creature! AAARGH! What should I do? I began to tremble and ran away as quickly as my clawed feet could carry me. I won’t be visiting that part of the wood to look for my snack again.

It was a very sunny day. Pearl and her Mummy Mavis were thinking about what to do when they heard a very ear piercing noise. They ran outside and saw a unicorn pegasus. They were sad to see it had been injured by a hunters arrow.

They took her in and looked after her until she was better. They decided to call her Wild. She was jumpier than a sunbeam on a rapid river. Wild spends her days finding and licking rainbows because they taste like candy.

Later, Mummy went to collect bananas so they could make banana cake together to have for their pudding. Mummy was walking and singing a song.

“It’s so sunny, look at all the trees bright and green, look at all the pretty flowers After Before they smell so sweet, look at the clear sky. It’s such a pretty day!”, sang Mummy happily. Without warning a pride of lions attacked her!! She could not get up.

Back at the house, Pearl heard a gigantic rumbling roar. She ran as quick as lightning into the forest not caring if she got stung by stinging nettles. Unexpectedly she got her foot stuck in a hole.

“Wild, Wild, WILD, help me wild!”, Pearl shouted.

Wild came galloping and nibbled off vines to help pull Pearl out of the hole. Pearl jumped onto Wilds back and flew to Mummy. She used vine lassos to capture the lions. Wild used her magical powers in her unicorn horn to fix Mummys wounds. Pearl and Mummy flew all the way home on Wild through white, fluffy, misty clouds. When they got home they all had hot chocolate with marshmallows on and lots of cuddles.

Comments from your District and County Councillor Dealing with Covid is a massive, complex and highly reactive process which has and will continue to throw up challenges. Every response and action is a result of having to balance many factors and attempting to think through the consequences of each one and in combination.

It is not only a question of physical, logistical and financial resources, but also human factors as well. The people involved in making decisions and delivering services (e.g. in the medical, education and care services) have been working at a very high tempo for 10 months now. Expectations that everything can be done for everyone, instantly and without any adverse effects are unrealistic. Given the scale of the challenge it is unsurprising that not everything will proceed as intended or without transient difficulties, but as problems arise they are dealt with.

By and large the Covid Testing centre has become part of background of life in Tangmere, as doubtless will the vaccination activity at the Village Centre. There has been much said about “why Tangmere?”. The confirmed length of time it has been made available for, its size/layout/facilities and that access to it from the immediately adjacent parking does not involve steps or lifts (a particular advantage for those in the early vaccination groups) were among the factors that helped to have it selected ahead of other

locations. It is a tribute to all the work that has gone on over the decades to provide and maintain this facility.

Now that the vegetation has died back for the winter, the scale of littering that goes on throughout the year becomes more apparent. CDC will shortly be undertaking its annual clearance of the A27, no mean undertaking. Increasing numbers of residents have been enjoying the paths around the village to get some exercise during the lockdowns, but that enjoyment can be spoiled by dog fouling and littering. There are bins around the village as well as the home wheely bins. It is particularly disappointing to note the large number of cider cans being left around.

Quite apart from the hazard to wildlife the 4 pack plastic rings pose, all those cans could and should be put in a recycling wheely bin.

Work on the Tangmere Strategic Development application (Simple Search (chichester.gov.uk) - 20/02893/OUT) continues. CDC intends to hold a public (virtual) briefing on Thu 18th Feb and at present is looking at the application being determined by its Planning Cttee at a special meeting late March. As an Outline application, the main areas for determination are: principles of access; general parameters; heads of terms for the Planning Obligations (S106) Agreement; and the large number Conditions that will govern how the details of the development are dealt with. Still a long way to go before any construction work starts.

Times Past……. Number 13 Those who are familiar with FaceBook and have followed the news and views of the Tangmere Village Facebook pages will be familiar with the kindness and generosity of the few who have sought to help the many who are in need of support often in the form of food and household necessities. Thank you to all those involved.

In Winter of 1898 the Rector of St Andrews church proposed to start a ‘children’s boot and shoe club’ our village has a long history of helping those in need so long may this tradition continue.

From the records: A Children’s Boot and Shoe Club.

Each child will have a card and will pay one [old] penny each week. Interest will be at the rate of three pennies for each shilling [12 old pennies]. Those who want to join can get a card from the Rector. It will probably be limited to children who attend the day schools.

We hope that parents will find this institution of service to them. Everyone knows what it must cost to keep little ones well shod, and on this plan each child can get one pair of new boots each year; most folk won’t miss a penny each week.

Our village has always had a Christmas Tree, a gift from the local landowner to St Andrews Church. Revd Trevor had said that Christmas would be different due to Covid so we all need to try and retain the spirit of Christmas into our lives. The beginning of December saw another tree erected on the Co-op car park thanks to Santa and his band of elf volunteers. Thank you to all those involved.

Once again we hope to receive a Christmas Tree this year. Mrs Bayley and Miss Bayley are making preparations for receiving it and decorating it. Everyone in the village is welcome to join in our gathering and enjoy the celebrations. We only wish that the school room could be made bigger for such occasions. There will be tea afterwards in the Rectory same as in previous years.

Christmas Day the Rector writes…………

Once more I have to record a very happy Xmas Day. The beautifully decorated church was done by the Mrs Bayley, Miss Bayley and the children, thank you for making our church look so good.

The special Psalms, Hymns, Carols, and Anthem were all sung by the congregation and the choir. A good attendance at God’s House and especially at His Holy Altar; all this combined to make Xmas Day one to be celebrated and remembered as the happiest and brightest in the whole year.

The choir sung remarkably well and thank them for their commitment to their work.

Such a great encouragement to our choir master Mr Acford to see his efforts meet with such a hearty response.

Did mother get the message that the Boot and Shoe club will be taken every Saturday at the Rectory at 9.30 all children up to age 15 can join.

Aladdin the pantomime has had to be postponed until December 2021 with hopefully rehearsals being able to begin in the Autumn.

It is hoped that by the end of March many of our members will have had their first vaccination and their second by the end of May, which with a relaxing of the national restriction may mean we can plan a social gathering in the summer. If this is the case, what a joyous event it will be.

However, the restrictions have not stopped Tangmere sWIfts from keeping in touch with each other and the wider WI community. Members have still received the national WI Life magazine through the post and thanks to our WhatsApp group our members have been updated with the West Sussex WI federation virtual activities through their newsletter.

Thankfully the National WI federation have rolled over the membership until April this year giving out treasurer a couple more months to work out how she will collect it.

Twinning Association Last year’s visit to Hermanville had to be cancelled due to government restrictions so it was tentatively arranged for the visit to take place instead over the weekend of 25-27 June 2021.

At present that arrangement still stands, but it is looking very unlikely that any “normal” overseas travel will be possible during the forthcoming months. We will, of course, let members know as and when there is any change to this visit.

Notes from the Rectory

At St Andrew’s, we have tried to keep the church open as much as possible.

The rules keep changing and we adapt as best we can. When lockdown first started back in March last year, we were unable to open the church at all. No services and no-one was allowed in, even for private prayer. This restriction was lifted and we have been allowed to open the church for private prayer and for services on Sundays.

Keeping the church open for anyone to come in and say their own personal prayer is important at this time. Coming into somewhere that is peaceful and quiet gives us all the opportunity to say our own prayers. Our prayers maybe for others or they may be for ourselves. And it doesn’t matter how you say your prayers. I have often been told by people that they don’t know how to pray. I don’t think that it really matters what you say or how you say it. You may choose to say it out loud, you may choose to say it in your head. It doesn’t matter.

When I was taught to pray, I was told to sit down and make myself comfortable. I have often sat in uncomfortable pews and most of my prayer was about how much my back or bottom hurt! When you are sitting comfortably, take a minute or so to look around. Think about the people that have sat in the church over the years. People like you. People who also may have found it difficult to pray.

When you are ready, take a few deep breaths, and just say whatever is on your mind. There is no “correct” way - just be yourself. Keep breathing and keep going for as long as you feel comfortable.

Hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear.

The other day I heard my staff talking about how they were going to trap a group of feral cats so I thought I would tell what I know about feral cats. You see I pretended I was a feral when I first arrived at The Centre, but once my staff let me out on site they soon realised I was just putting on a front. Although I was a stray when I was found I must have had some human contact when I was young which meant I liked the humans (well most of the time!). True feral cats will not want to be anywhere near humans and even when they are caught and brought to The Centre they rarely come round. There is a key time in a kitten/ young cats as they grow that if they haven’t had much human contact by then they are unlikely to ever be friendly. If we have feral cats at CRRC we usually rehome them to farms or stables as they can be really useful at keeping mice and rat populations down.

If you see a cat and you suspect it might be feral, try having a look at its ear. Vets will clip the top of feral cat’s ears to signal that it has been neutered. If it has a clipped ear and it’s not in any danger leave it be. If it is hanging around in the same place a lot, you could try providing it with a shelter. If they don’t have a clipped ear it may Apple Jacks and Lucky Charms mean they are a stray or not neutered. In these cases you need rehoming can do your best to make sure it’s not owned and then you can call a rescue like us. A feral colony left without being neutered will just keep breeding with each other and can get out of control quickly.

I hope you enjoyed my facts about feral cats and just to let you know we are hoping to catch a feral mum cat who we think is pregnant, along with her 4 adult kittens very soon. Cross your fingers that we can catch them all safely. Once at The centre they will be assessed and if they are true ferals after being neutered my staff will find them lovely outdoor homes.

Tangmere Youth Club Thank you to everyone who came out

and supported Santa’s Sleigh which toured Tangmere and Boxgrove raising funds for Tangmere Youth Club in December. The elves were there helping to tow the sleigh and direct the proceedings as well as members of the youth club committee who donned hi vis jackets and Christmas hats. All seemed to enjoy the experience and the Christmas spirit shared by all lifted the doldrums felt by so many due to the pandemic. In total the event raised over £1000 a huge amount which will be used to pay for extra activates for the young people of the village once restrictions are lifted and the youth club can return to its venue in the village centre. Father Christmas also took the Sleigh to Oving and with the help from local elves raise money for their youth club.

If you would like to help the youth club by donating please go to the just giving page https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/tangmere-youthclub Since 2019 the youth club committee has been receiving funding from Tangmere Parish Council and Clarion Futures so they can pay for the services of Sussex Clubs for Young People (SCYP), an organisation that offers qualified youth workers to run youth clubs in the East and West Sussex area.

This organisation has been challenged like most during the pandemic, having to furlough many of it’s staff as clubs have had to remain closed due to restrictions over access to their venues. Tangmere youth club has been fortunate though to continue with contact from the leaders during lockdown, in the beginning via virtual meetings and then when restrictions allowed as small groups meeting outside or in the village centre when possible. However, the committee is enquiring about an alternative venue while the village centre is being used to administer vaccinations so that the youth club can meet when the weather prevents them form being outside. Hopefully soon the small group activities will start up again on the recreation field by the children play area.
