With the NHS returning the Village Centre back to the Parish Council and the community, the centre is beginning to get booked again by community groups, village events as well as new ventures. TaiChiFit is planning to restart for a fresh new term in September. We shall continue to be careful and abide by the guidelines current at the time; it will be wonderful to finally meet again. TaiChiFit is lead by a Chartered Physiotherapist and is a good all-round exercise class which is excellent for balance, core strength and cardiovascular fitness. Participants wear loose clothing and soft comfortable shoes, everyone works to their own abilities.

A storm is brewing

Times past …………. Number 15

Dennis Noble was ordered to report to 43 Squadron Tangmere a frontline airfield bordered by the South Downs and the sea. Having spent 25 hours flying Hurricanes it did not make him an experienced flyer so on 16th August 1940 the engine of his hurricane caught fire and his aircraft crashed.

Friday 16th August 1940 was a day of intense activity with Stuka bombers carrying out devastating damage to property and lives by direct bombing and shooting targets on the airfield and surrounding areas.

One pilot managed to land his plane but it was shot up by low level fighters …… the pilot was PO Billy Fiske an American citizen who was a volunteer officer in the RAF it is said he was the first airman to die defending our land. His memorial is in Boxgrove Priory church.

Some quotations from eyewitnesses recorded in 2009 by students at University Chichester “Chichester high School had dugouts and we spent more time in them than in class. We took turns to visit the Bishops Palace for lessons as it was nearby.”

“We had lessons in our gas masks……. really hilarious ….. but we has such fun!” “………me and my sister did fire watching ….. incendiaries landed in the village and fields ….. it was bad in Portsmouth we could hear the large bangs …… “ “We was one of only six families who could stay in the village ‘cos the RAF made everyone else move away so the officers could live in our homes. There was one old lady Mrs Collins she said she wouldn’t leave so they came and took her away ……..”

After the storm the RAF moved out and the land was sold for housing “Only a few people came back to the village in 1947 it was strange as none of the houses were numbered and the roads were not named …… we couldn’t find our old house and the council told us to go to a new house near the playing fields” ……….. there were no public buildings apart from the phone box and the church. We met in the sports pavilion and then we had our meetings at the Spitfire club.

The village was three different parts not really connected with footpaths …………there was the old village down a track, ……… the places where new houses were built, and the RAF houses which were vacated and stood empty for ages.

Old Cottage Close was first to be built with new houses, Hayleybridge Walk was built on the site of the plastic foam factory and there was foam in the hedges and gardens, Houses were built in Hearn Close on the site of the old Rectory……. these were nice homes All villages needed a social centre ……… the village pub was the place where everyone came.

Once in the past Tangmere had its own brewery next to the Tangmere Hotel ………. now sadly long since gone.

Much later a group of cottages was converted into the OLD TIMBERS restaurant. Further down THE STREET the village inn was built named as BADER ARMS. If you have any memories to share then go to the history club website or contact the history club members 3

The Cockpit Cafe is nestled in the building of the Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and is situated in an original building from the RAF site.

Decorated in keeping with the setting, it embraces the heritage of the site. There is even an original wooden propeller hanging in the outside, covered terrace.

Husband, wife & daughter - Ben, Georgina & Beth have recently taken the Cafe on and have rebranded, renamed and revamped the Cafe. It is friendly, welcoming and has received 5* reviews on a variety of platforms since opening.

Inside the Cafe there is seating for 20. You will be welcomed by the aromas of freshly ground Coffee Beans. They support local businesses as much as possible, and the coffee is an award winning blend from Edgcumbes Coffee & Tea Merchants, who roast the beans in Arundel. There is a range of truly stunning coffee on offer.

The patio area seats 12 and is next to the Museum’s stunning, peaceful memorial garden.

You also have the option to sit out on the grass lawn; wooden picnic benches are the perfect place to enjoy your lunch. The flagpoles also make a great photo backdrop, and you can sit and watch out for any aircraft flying over.

One of the picnic benches has been adapted for wheelchair users.

You are welcome to visit the cafe both as a museum visitor, or non-museum visitor. There is a separate side entrance that allows you to come straight in throughout the day.

Community Wardens

We are sad to report that Tangmere’s route out of Covid restrictions is being somewhat marred by the behaviour of a few of our youths. We are seeing increasing amounts of litter and broken bottles in various places especially around the skate park; this area in particular has several bins very close by, so there really is no excuse. We have also had reports of trees being damaged on the field which is completely unacceptable and any information we get regarding this will be passed to the Police. On top of this the play area at Dukes Meadow has also been targeted and damage caused. We are regularly out and about talking to the young people in the village, but to some extent we do rely on witnesses to come forward and tell us what they have seen; it’s very rare anyone behaves like this when we are there. Any information will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Because of the problems that are occurring, we are also appealing to parents; please be aware of where your children are and what they are doing, reinforce the message that vandalism won’t be tolerated and remind them of what the consequences could be.

Tangmere is such a lovely place to live but we all have to play a part.

E Scooters are still a problem, please be aware that ANY privately owned scooter are not allowed to be used anywhere except private property with the land owners permission. We have been told that Sussex Police will now start to seize scooters that are being used illegally without warning.

Chairman’s Report

The NHS use of the village centre as a vaccination site ended in early June and they left the village a thank-you message for allowing the community facility to be used for such an important role.

Now the halls can return to being used by the various groups as they are able to meet indoors for social activity. We will be welcoming many of the user groups who have not been able to hold any activity for 16 months, and also new groups who wish to start their activities here in Tangmere.

The village week-end event on 25th and 26th will be an opportunity to see what these groups will be getting up to over the next year, and who knows, you may join up and get involved!

will be a Mad Hatters tea party organised by the Tangmere Players that the youngsters can join in with, and a traditional cricket tea will be served during the afternoon for the cricket players.

There will be picnic tables available for villagers to use for their own picnic. All we need is a lovely late September day and plenty of residents who want to play a bit of light cricket. Young and old, girls and boys will be able to turn their arm or swing a bat!

The best thing about a community garden, after being part of a lovely community, is that we all work together and at the end of the day there is plenty of produce to take home. This is a particularly productive time of year and we have benefited from masses of asparagus, broad beans and mangetout ,alsowe’ve had our first crop of new potatoes, yummy! There have been loads of gooseberries and we are picking blackcurrants at the moment , the jam and crumble making are all at full speed. If we’re lucky we’ll catch the cherries before the birds enjoy them!

Recently the new pizza oven was fired up and the pizzas were declared to be really successful so we’re planning to do that again soon. Also we’ve had working days where we have shared a potluck lunch ,also delicious plus plenty of time to get to know each other and chat and share gardening and other stories.

The tomatoes are coming on in the poly tunnel and also the aubergines, chilies and squashes. This year too we’ve had fabulous flowers to take home including cornflowers, corn cockles ,gypsophila and calendula ,the dahlias are on their way as we speak, and the foxgloves were fabulous.

All in all a lovely time of year and a good time to come and join us if you’re thinking that you would like to take part in a really feel good enterprise, you would be very welcome and we look forward to seeing you. Saturday is work mornings so that would be a good time to come and say hello!

Tangmere Flower Club Diary Dates : 10th September 2021 Floral Gift Box Workshop Meetings for the Flower Club will start back on Friday 10th September 2021 at 7.30pm in the Village Centre. Our first meeting will be an in house workshop run by the committee making an “envelope fold flower box arrangement.”

A suitable gift, birthday present, party decoration or a wedding table centre piece.

With Raffle, Refreshments and a Sales Table. Entry fee will be £4.50 for members and visitors. All are welcome. The Flower Club will be outside on the field selling plants, bric- a- brac and books on Saturday 25th September.

Youth Work back in full swing After the ups and downs of navigating Covid restrictions we are very happy to say that Tangmere Youth Club is back in full swing! After some time delivering outreach work, we returned to our more traditional programme at the beginning of June. We are now up and running with both the junior and senior sessions.

We have had a mixed programme of poster competitions, water activities, relay games, badminton, photo scavenger hunts, wide games, arty paper planes, table-top games, quizzes and more. We have seen good numbers attending with an average of 25 – 30 each week.

As Covid restrictions ease thanks to the hard work of the Parish Council, Village Hall and Tangmere Youth Committee we have been fortunate enough to be able to return to delivering work inside the Village Centre opening lots of new opportunities using the resources and equipment within the Youth Hub space.

We will be delivering sessions across the summer holidays and will hope to utilise the beautiful Village Green to run outdoors activities when the weather is good. We have in the pipeline some football coaching sessions for young people in our senior age group and we are also hoping to diversify the programme to include some external trips and one-off events such as movie nights in the new academic year. We also have plans in place to develop some young leaders form our senior group to help with local social action projects and to in time support as helpers with our Junior Group. All in all, we have a busy year in store.

As an additional project Sussex Clubs for Young People in partnership with Clarion Housing will be relaunching the Young People’s Community Action Project which will run over the next few months. Giving young people in Tangmere the opportunity to take social action to benefit their community. If you would like to know more, please contact John Lewry.

We have kindly been given a class set of the book ‘A Dinosaur Ate my Sister’ by Pooja Puri as part of the Marcus Rashford book club. These books were sent as part of our partnership with Magic Breakfast. We have been partnering with them for the last 3 years and they provide all our breakfast cereals and breakfast bagels free of charge to all pupils. This term at TPA we have been working on the whole school theme ‘What a Wonderful World’.

Each class has taken a key text to explore the world that we live in. Taking time to think about What we know about our wonderful world and then to work on our global problem; How can we make our world a more wonderful place?

In Year 5 & 6 (Hurricane & Lysander Classes) the children have been looking at rainforests and deforestation through the book ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. This is based in the Amazon Rainforest, so the children have been studying other parts of South America too. Frida Kahlo was a Mexican Artist who enjoyed the Mexican Day of the Dead festival. They were inspired by her work to create their own embroidered felt Sugar Skull designs. They have been looking at the impact of traffic pollution on the environment. As part of this work the children carried out a traffic survey. They collected data in the form of a tally chart and then used this to create presentations with charts and graphs to show their findings.

In Years 3 & 4 (Meteor and Spitfire classes) they have been doing lots of work based around the text Kensuke’s Kingdom. Just like the main character, Michael, they have been exploring the world map and specifically looking at different bodies of water. They have been gaining an understanding of what makes a river a river, a lake a lake and an ocean an ocean but alongside this exploring the negative impact that humans have had on these bodies of water (vehicle, tourism and plastic pollution) and what we can do to make a positive impact on these bodies of water.

In Reception Class (Sunflower class FS2) the children have been comparing different bodies of water- looking at the living things within the school pond compared with what lives in the ocean. The children have been creating their own fact file as well as a range of sea themed crafts.

In Nursery class (Sunflower FS1) the children have been growing their own vegetables. They have been enjoying a range of books such as Handa’s Surprise and Oliver’s Fruit salad and Oliver’s Vegetables. The children have been collecting language to describe different fruits and vegetables and taking part in lots of activities related to fruit and veg such as making their own art in the style of Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Year 1 & 2 (Fury and Hunter class) have been working on the key text ‘Pattan’s Pumpkin’ by Chitra Soundar, thinking about how they can make the world a more wonderful place by growing our own vegetables and sharing them with other people. They have enjoyed planting their own seeds and watching them grow in our vegetable plots. The classes have also been learning about the different features of a newspaper to enable them to write their very own newspaper article about their pumpkin’s progress.

All you Mums and Dads out there whose children need to express themselves, then Panto is the place for them. In fact, Panto is the place for anyone from 7 years to whenever. * * * * Hi, my name's Lee James and together with my wife Heather we run a small dog walking business in Tangmere called James Family Dog Walking.

We started dog walking for a family my mum knew in the village, just once a week, never thinking it would be something we could do full-time. They had a standard Poodle named Nemo, a Shih Tzu named Bobby and a long-haired Chihuahua named Tasha and we absolutely adored them. We are still walking Bobby every week over 5 years later, sadly Nemo and Tasha aren't with us anymore, without a doubt the worst part of our job. We always form such strong bonds with all our dogs, as if they were our own and I was especially close to Nemo. Each and every dog has a special place in our hearts and we will never forget them.

I think it was Heather that first started looking on Facebook, seeing if anyone wanted pet sitting or dog walking and it wasn't too long until we started walking more and more.

We have always had animals in our house growing up, now we have 1 very spoiled cat but with all the dogs we walk we get the joy of so many more. Animals are in our opinion, the most wonderful things in the world. We feel so fortunate to be able to do what we do; Dog Walking has allowed us to continue to work together every day whilst enjoying the company of so many dogs. We have had so many over the years of all shapes and sizes, from Chihuahuas and Terriers to an Old English Mastiff and Doberman, each with their own unique character and we love each and every one more than I can say.

Covid had such a devastating impact on our business last year, within the first 2 days of the lockdown announcement we were down to about a third of our clients and after a week we were barely dog walking 1hr a day. We were able to sustain ourselves thanks to the SelfEmployment Income Support grants and now things are finally starting to feel like before.

I have been thinking about what being a Christian means in today’s society. I think that the most important part of Christianity today is to remember what Jesus taught us. The underlying message of Jesus is that we should care about one another. I take this to mean that we should care about those who are close to us - our family and our friends. And we should also care for those who are not close to us; those who are different.

One of the great wonders of being human is the diversity that we see all around us every day. We can all identify as being part of different groups, many at the same time. Where am I from? Tangmere of course!

I am also from Scotland (by birth and on my father’s side), North London (from my mother’s side), Luton (where I went to school) and Sussex (after spending most of my life here). Does that make me less a part of Tangmere? Of course not.

And I know that there are people from all over that live in Tangmere. From all over the UK, Europe and the world. If you take a walk around the churchyard at St Andrew’s, you will find grave to people from all over the world. Since I have been at St Andrew’s, I have been to funerals for people from France, Italy, Ireland and India. All ending their lives as part of Tangmere and who will be remembered forever as part of this community.

So as I think about what it means to be a Christian, I give thanks that I live where people from all over the world are part of our community; giving something unique and valuable to use all.

Let us remember what Jesus taught us and take time to care for those who are part of our community irrespective of where they are from.

Churchyard Working Party The next working party will be on the 14th August between 10:00 and 12:00. If you feel that you could come along and help us keep the churchyard tidy, your help would be appreciated. If you would rather be more sedate, there is always tea and coffee to be made!

St Wilfrid’s Moonlight Walkers A group of is will be walking 10 miles in September in support of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Huevos Rancheros Eggs Ranchers style – a great Mexican breakfast dish turned into a filling supper dish. The ingredients are totally flexible to suit your store cupboard and whatever is growing in your garden! You make a fiery (well as hot as you like!) tomato sauce base, supplemented with beans (or small potatoes). Then add any left overs like cooked vegetables, chopped smoked sausage or cooked meat, or chorizo sausages, then finish off with eggs cooked in the top at the last minute. Serve with crunchy bread, tortillas, chapattis, pitta breads or flat breads. Total Time 30-40 mins, serves 4 Ingredients 1 tbsp rapeseed or olive oil 2 medium onions, sliced 2-3 sticks celery if you have 3 coves garlic, crushed or chopped 400g can chopped tomatoes, or 3 large fresh slightly soft tomatoes 1-2tbsp chilli powder or flakes, or oil or sauce, to taste Chipotle chili powder, adobo sauce, or ground cumin to taste (optional) 400g can beans - red kidney, borlotti, broad, baked, cannellini or chick peas 4 fresh eggs 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or coriander, chopped (optional) Bread

Method 1) Make the sauce first - fry the onions, celery and garlic in a little oil in a large skillet on medium heat. Once the onions are translucent, add the tomatoes and their juices plus an extra ½ can of water. If using whole canned tomatoes, break them up by squeezing in your hand straight into the pan. If using fresh tomatoes, chop them first, then add. But they will take longer to cook.

2) Add chilli powder to taste, and also either chipotle powder, adobo sauce, regular chili powder, or even ground cumin for a good kick.

3) Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low, and let simmer stirring occasionally. Reduce to keep warm after it has been simmering for 10 minutes. Add salt to taste if needed.

4) Finally when the sauce is rich and slightly thickened and you are ready to serve, make 4 hollows in it and drop an egg into each. Place a lid or cover on the pan and leave to cook for 3-4 minutes or more until they are cooked to your liking! Serve immediately with the warm bread.

Comments from your District and County Councillor While the Co-Op has been closed for refurbishment and changes in layout, there has been a notable decrease in the amount of litter. Though it is great to have a convenience store in the village, the downside is that it provides convenient access to sweets, snacks and sugary drinks which are of negligible nutritional value and result in a lot of effort being put in to clear up after people (mainly children) who treat our environment with such disdain.

Another increasing issue is the number of children using e-scooters to move around.

Though I’m sure these are good fun, they are illegal to use on the Highway and on public recreation areas in our area and, given they are being ridden by inexperienced drivers, a significant safety hazard. It could be said that e-scooters are a way of enabling non-car or motorbike movement, however this needs to be balanced with the introduction of a new vehicle on roads and pavements with potentially erratic driving and a longer term health issue of a reduction in walking and/or cycling. This not only has implications for the physical development of young bodies, it also reduces the burning off of the calories consumed via junk food.

CDC has opened a free tree scheme (www.chichester.gov.uk/treescheme) to applications from anyone in the District as part of a DEFRA pilot testing ways to increase tree cover in rural and urban areas.

Given we are going to see increasing chal-

lenges to our existing trees from disease (with Ash dieback a considerable concern for WSCC Highways), new development and residents desire not to have large trees near their houses or dominating their gardens, it is going to be increasingly important that every opportunity is taken to get new trees planted in appropriate places.

CDC will be holding an in public zoom/ webcast briefing for its Cllrs on 29th July on the progress of its Local Plan Review. Of particular interest will be how the various Transport studies are progressing as this aspect of the Plans’ evidence base is going to be the most crucial in determining levels and locations of future development. In parallel to this Highways England is working up plans for public engagement in its RIS 2 options study for the A27 Chichester bypass. Separately Transport for the SE is (as part its Outer Orbital transport corridor work) is looking at high level options for transport improvements across active (walking and cycling)), shared (bus/rail) and road modes of transport.

If Government continues to expect the A27 corridor in West Sussex to change to a mainly urban environment over the course of this century, then a lot of work needs to be done to put in place a transport framework to support that scale of land use change. However, given the financial challenges arising from Covid, an aging population, social care needs, climate change and the increasing costs of delivering public services, how is all this is to be paid for?

No such thing as too many Friends

Just recently my son has started to watch episodes from Friends. He started with the pilot episode and he’s currently on Season 7. Sometimes I get to sit and watch with him and immediately I have fond memories of sitting with my housemates at university watching a whole Friends weekend and working out who was who in our group (I was Phoebe, since you asked!). Looking back at those times where life was changing for me, my relationships with my family were changing and the reality of full independence was hitting home I was so lucky that I had this awesome group of people to sit and chill and chat with. We sorted out the world, planned our futures but mostly talked about nothing much. I Our conversation tree am incredibly privileged to still be very good friends with one of the people who was in this group. We don’t see each other as often as we would like (although it is more often since we moved here) but I know that when I get to sit and Every 2 weeks we are joined by UK Harvest have a coffee with this lovely lady that I will have that feeling of being able to talk to her about anything all over again.

These connections that we make with others can lift us, help us to feel connected, seen and heard. It can help us to feel less alone. This is one of the reasons that we started the Chill and Chat cafes in Oving. After the last year and a half it is more important than ever that we make new connections and forge old ones. That is what we have been doing every Tuesday at Oving Jubilee Hall, starting conversations, sorting out the world and also talking about nothing much.

We hope to bring these cafes to Tangmere too soon and build even more connections and create even more friendships, after all there is no such thing as too many friends.

Neighbourhood Watch

Well summers here, even if it has been rather mixed, what a contrast with last year! Despite a lot of time and work put in by our PCSO Richard Moorey and our Wardens Dawn and Gareth, the number of residents whizzing around Tangmere on their electric scooters, just seems to increase. They started with a softly, softly approach as that was all they are legally allowed to do but it seems that the Police will be upping the ante and will have more powers to seize a scooter being ridden in public places. The only places that they are legal on public roads are cities and towns where trials are being held and, incidentally, the rider must have a driving licence. Please report these illegal, nuisance and dangerous riders on 101 or online (much quicker).

Just a reminder that the summer time is peak risk time for having your vehicle broken into and valuables stolen, particularly at carparks near beauty spots and dog walking places. Please think twice about what you take with you and don’t leave anything valuable in your car unattended. It is not a nice experience to find your windows smashed in when you return from your walk.

Do enjoy what’s left of the summer and stay safe, it hasn’t gone away!

* * * * Just a quick update on Catherine and Chums, As many of you know me from walking my little dog around the village and beyond. I have lived here for about 20 years and been Cat Sitting and Dog walking around Tangmere, across the fields, Boxgrove, Chichester etc, through mud, wind and rain and always at your door come what may.

Previous to this I spent many years looking after all manner of animals from childhood onwards having had the variety of rodents, budgie, rabbit, guinea pigs, tortoises upwards by size to a horse. After many years living in Emsworth with more pets and working with children, I finally moved here and decided on a career change, seeing a gap and a need in Tangmere for dog walking as in those days none was providing it. But now due to unforeseen circumstances I cannot continue walking as such. I am however still available to pop in to feed, water and any other requirements your babies require to keep them happy, comfortable and content, in their own home where they will feel secure with this pandemic chaos. Life is going to be very strange for them after having Mum and Dad around 24/7, to seeing them disappear on that well needed break away.

Easy for us to adapt not so easy for them with their world turned upside down again and a very quiet house. I can offer company to break up their day, cuddles, lots of TLC, and my homemade livercake if allowed, a great bonding and recall treat makes us friends for life.

Any other requirements to be discussed if needed— bins out, water plants etc. I look after your home and babies as you would. Having had pets all my life, they are my passion, and I have made many friendships and bonds over the years with owners too, who have been so supportive throughout.
