Where has this year gone? It only seems like yesterday when we were getting ready to walk around the village with Father Christmas and his sleigh to raise money for Tangmere youth club, which I might add is going to happen again this year during the first week of December and just after the Players performance of Aladdin and the Christmas Tree lighting.

The last couple of months have seen the increased popularity of the Pram Club with mums, dads and grandmas coming along with little ones for a cup of tea, a play and a chat. Also a cooked supper with dessert has been introduced to the film club thanks to Alex Halswell (“Cook with Alex”) and her helpers. This year for Halloween, a children’s film club showing of “the House with a clock in it’s Walls” was held in the village centre with a Halloween drop in @ the Hub after, an activity which last happened in 2019.

May these activities carry on prospering and others start giving residents the opportunity to meet and socialise without having to necessarily go out of the village.

TaiChiFit, lead by a Chartered Physiotherapist, is a good all-round exercise class which is excellent for balance, core strength and cardiovascular fitness. The hour long sessions restarted for a fresh new term in September on Tuesdays at 3:30pm and Fridays at 10:30am. We shall continue to be careful and abide by the guidelines current at the time.

Participants wear loose clothing and soft comfortable shoes, everyone works to their own abilities.

Public Art projects Residents will recall that during the Covid 19 lockdown a number of younger residents painted and displayed a stone snake along the pavement by City Fields.

There have been plans to formalise these stones into a permanent display, and to add to the collection as new stones are painted.

In the meantime the existing stones have been collected by a local resident to keep them safe until they can be formally set in their final location.

If any younger resident wishes to continue producing these painted stones, please feel free to contact the parish council and they can be added to the collection.

Father Christmas is touring Tangmere with his Sleigh again this year, raising funds for Tangmere Youth Club.

The Chill & Chat Food Pantry comes to Tangmere On September 14th the Chill & Chat café came to Tangmere. It is a café and food pantry held at the village centre every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month.

We have been running it in Oving since June and we knew that Tangmere would benefit from this service too.

On paper it seems simple, maybe even a little boring. It’s a café, a place for people to have a drink and maybe a biscuit but as I told the Environmental health lady, it’s not about the food and drink and that makes it different to many other cafes. This café is about the community. I know that since we started in Tangmere we have grown in numbers, last count was 30+ people. New friendships have been made, people have attended who had wanted to get out having been in for so long but didn’t have anywhere to go. Mums with their young children have come along and spoken about how they love their Tuesday mornings because they get this space to sit and catch up. Each week the book swap books are explored to see what is new, what literary goodies can they take home today? People attending soon get to know me and know that if they need an ear they can pull me aside and chat.

Over the next few weeks I will be asking what else people would like on their Tuesday mornings, would they like a social prescriber to come and join us? Is there interest in someone coming in to talk about wellbeing in general? What else would our Chill & Chatters like to see or hear on a Tuesday morning?

And then there is the added bonus of UK Harvest who come in with surplus food and offer it for a bargain of a suggested donation of £2.50 for a bag of food. This helps to reduce food waste, it can also reduce our shopping bills and, with the amazing ideas suggested by Simon and his team and the recipes on the UK Harvest website, it can give us new ideas for dinner. There are so many things in our Tuesday mornings that can give us all the glow of doing something good for ourselves, our community and our environment.

None of this would be possible without the support of Clarion Futures who fund the café and we are grateful for the all of the support that they offer when we need it. We look forward to seeing you there soon!

Orchard update

I have had some lovely offers of help for pruning the fruit trees on the Tangmere Village Facebook group. The trees can be pruned as soon as the leaves have all fallen which, with apples trees, can be as late as December. This is a sign that the trees are truly dormant. Look out for a call for help on Facebook in December.

Around a month ago someone very kindly weeded around the trees that hadn’t been done earlier. I had made a start, but those pesky weeds can be very deep rooted and are a hell of a job to pull out especially in dry weather. Never feel you need permission to look after and maintain the orchard. It is your orchard and the space and the fruit is there for everyone in the village.

By the way, I have a sneaking suspicion that a squirrel has found the walnut tree!

Either that or someone got there before me. There were plenty on this year – and then there were none! Enjoy.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) - Update from Countryside Properties Chichester District Council has now received confirmation that the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) in respect of the Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) has been confirmed. The Order will enable the Council to acquire the land required to proceed with the development of the Tangmere SDL, which received a resolution to grant outline planning permission earlier this year.

Tangmere WI The Tangmere sWIfts are thrilled to be able to meet up regularly again. In October we had our annual meeting where we thank our committee members for the work they do during the year and accept the annual accounts. This year the committee said goodbye to Irene and welcomed Fiona back onto the committee as a new secretary after Tania stood down from the role.

In November the group celebrated its birthday and this year had a great party. Along with great food provided by the members we were entertained by Frances who played various instruments including the saxophone. We will finish the year with a Christmas themed evening with a floral demonstration by Father Peter.

The program for next year is shaping up well with a mixture of speakers/ craft workshops and outings.

New members are always welcome. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at the Village Centre, Malcolm Road, between 7.30-9.30.

Times past ……… No. 17 I over heard two chaps chatting in the pub last Saturday …… the one who bought the drinks for his pals explained that he had hired an odd job man to do some decorating . It turned out Odd Job was an Easyjet pilot on furlough who needed to earn some cash. The conversation continued ….

“Odd Job was extremely careful and in particular made a lovely job of the LANDING!” Cheers all round.

Get to know your neighbours was a very popular thing to do during lock down. The village Facebook page was full of good deeds and example of care between neighbours. If you have not seen this Facebook page then join up as it is a useful source of information. We owe thanks to the folk who set it up and look after it.

I was part of a small group of friends that gathered at a road junction to chat and share nibbles. I heard of others who swapped garden produce, home made cakes and wines.

Looking back at the village news letters and our local history pages it is clear that many of these events were common place in the village over the years.

When times were especially hard, for example during and after the war, there were shortages of foods and materials so folk who had shared and swopped with others.

Garden fetes were held in the summer where the wonders of nature were open for all to see, fun and games for young and old, the bring and buy stalls were useful means to raising funds to help maintain the church, the village sports and social clubs and the village centre.

Many residents will recall visits to the Spitfire Club, and events such as village day on the green, and Easter morning bacon and bangers in the church.

By the time this issue goes to press there will only be a couple of weeks left of rehearsals for the Christmas panto Aladdin on the first weekend of December. The rest of December will be spent by the players recovering and preparing for the next production in 2022.

Tangmere Flower Club Diary Dates 10th December 2021 Christmas Wreath Making with a Fish and Chip Supper 14th January 2022 New Year Party Night Meetings for the Flower Club have resumed and it’s good to be back!

We always welcome new visitors. This time because the Wreaths Wires and the Fish and Chip Supper have to be ordered in advance, please telephone Jan to reserve your place by the 1st December. The Supper will be £5 and there will be a choice on offer.

We usually meet in the Village Centre on the second Friday of the month at 7.30pm, with Flower Raffle Prizes, Refreshments and a Sales Table. Entry fee is £4.50 for everyone.

Twinning Association

The Twinning Association members, like everyone else, always look forward to meeting up and socialising. We have several events organised for the coming months, and are hoping to get across to visit our friends in Hermanville in May 2022. We held a bring and share supper in October and welcomed some potential new members. Our next social meeting will be the Christmas dinner on the 12th December where committee members organising the food for the evening.

Membership is renewed at our AGM which will be held on the 21st January 2022.

Although it is a quieter time of year for gardeners we still find plenty to do ,there’s all the clearing of the beans and the courgette plants ,the poly tunnel has to be emptied and cleaned ,soil turned over ,weeds dug up and everything made ready for next spring! .

We’re still harvesting the pumpkins ,squash and chilies which is great and we’ve had some delicious soups and jellies as a result.

I think the only thing left to harvest is the medlars which are a most extraordinary fruit!

We had a fun Bonfire night recently where we welcomed friends and family to the garden to share butternut squash soup and sausages from the bbq. The children had fun toasting marshmallows and lighting sparklers. Local neighbours provided a backdrop of bright rockets and loud exploding fireworks which lit the night sky!

We look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Lights switch on in the Coop car park on Sunday December 5th ,where we’ll be having a Chocolate and Prosecco Tombola stall.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It has been a very busy few weeks at St Andrew’s recently. I have started my new part-time role as National Giving Ministry Advisor. This is an exciting and challenging role that keeps me very busy Monday - Wednesday each week. However, I am still working for the parishes of Tangmere and Oving for the rest of my time. I try to keep at least some part of Saturday’s free for catching up with Lindsey and taking a bit of time out. Last week we got back from a short break in Berlin where we were visiting my daughter who recently moved out there to work. It was delightful to see her settled into her new flat and getting to grips with living in Germany. We also visited Wittenberg, where Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the cathedral door - a lovely town that was well worth the visit.

In November we welcomed Bishop Ruth to Tangmere when she lead our Sunday Worship. She was enthusiastic about our church and congregation. I hope to invite her back again at some point in the future.

Events that are coming up are: 28th November - The St Andrew’s Patronal Festival. We will be having an Advent Workshop at 3:00pm for the younger people of the parish. This will be followed by refreshments at 5:00. There is also an evening service at 6:00pm proceeded by refreshments at 5:00pm. So one lot of refreshments for both groups - a chance to mingle and get to know each other.

17th December is a new event! Carols Round the Christmas Tree. This starts at 6:00pm and is a chance for an informal sing of the most well known carols around the tree with a glass of mulled wine, mince pies and stollen. Non mulled wine and alcohol free alternatives will be available. Invite you friends and neighbours to come and get into the Christmas spirit.

19th December will be the more traditional Carol Service at 18:00. Readings and carols in the candlelit church. Again, the chance to invite friends and neighbours.

24th December will be our Crib Service at 2:00pm where children of all ages are invited to come along and hear the Christmas story.

Midnight Mass is at Tangmere this year and starts at 11:30pm.

Christmas Day service is at the usual time of 9:15am.

And of course, on Boxing Day (being a Sunday this year) there will be a 9:15am service. This will be a said service to give our voices a rest!

The PCC will be meeting between now and Advent to decide what our priorities are for the next couple of years. If you have any thoughts on where you think that we should be using our resources, please let myself or any member of the PCC know and we will add your ideas into the mix.

Message from Practice Manager Joanna Reiss Covid boosters are now being offered to patients. Appointments can be booked at Siddlesham Football Club by calling 0333 370 4111. The other option is to call 119.

Patient demand continues to be high. We offer a mixture of face to face appointments and telephone calls, depending on the nature of the issue. On a typical day, the doctors and paramedic will see or telephone between 130 and 150 patients.

OTHER SERVICES The surgery hosts ENT and dermatology clinics, run by the hospital., as well as a weekly physiotherapy clinic. This will be for new problems only. The physiotherapist will be able to assess patients and signpost them if appropriate.

DISPENSARY

Can we please ask patients to minimize calls to dispensary. Where possible, please email if you have a query regarding medication. The emails are checked on a regular basis. If you do have to call, please call after 2.00 pm.

Comments from your District and County Councillor The earlier than expected confirmation (with one small amendment) of the Tangmere Strategic Development’s Compulsory Purchase Order is a major step in the process leading to this considerable change to Tangmere. The Inspector’s Decision is worth a read (go to www.chichester.gov.uk and search for “Tangmere Strategic Development Location”). There is still a long way to go in the development management process to ensure what has been agreed in Outline is delivered.

The future of CDC’s Local Plan Review (LPR) is now centring on defining National Highways (ex Highways England, ex Highways Agency) position on what can be done, and when, with the A27 Chichester by-pass within the available developer funding. This is now the constraint on the level of housing the LPR will be expected to plan for. This process is separate from the National Highways Roads Investment Strategy study into options for improving the A27 at Chichester. Should a Govt funded project arise from this work, then the next 5 year review of the Local Plan will take that into account. It is a case of be careful what you wish for.

At the time of writing, the latest estimate on when the Oving Lights A27 junction will close is mid-January, when the B2144 will switch to go through Shopwyke Lakes. However, as we have

seen so far, a plan is a basis for change…... . Investigative work is progressing on the Madestein glasshouse application site within the Horticultural Development Area but, like the TSDL, the legal bits are never straight forward.

WSCC has announced its partnership with Connected Kerb to enable the roll out of an electric vehicle charging point network across the County. Details can be found at: www.westsussex.gov.uk and search for “electric vehicles”. This will also provide a link for you to register your interest in this scheme.

WSCC provides a lot of advice regarding how to stay safe from scams. This is a growing problem, as not only do we have more older people who are vulnerable, but everyone’s greater use of online means to communicate and shop expands the potential to succumb.

A community like this…..

It’s June 2020, I am mid lockdown like the rest of the country and whilst I have been running, I know that I need to do more.

Not because I believe that I need to be body beautiful, after 2 children I know that that ship has sailed for me but because a rugby injury has given me a weak shoulder, my family has a history of arthritis and my knees, wrists and fingers tell me that keeping them moving will be the kindest thing I can do for myself. I have always struggled with exercise classes for so many reasons. I have tried zumba, pilates, HIIT, Body pump, the gym, so many classes. Then in June I was skimming through Facebook and saw a post for Bootcamp UK Chichester and my friend and I decided to give it a go.

Here I am nearly a year and a half later and I try to go at least once a week, more if I get the time. It meets so many of my own personal needs and ways of looking out for me.

It’s outside which whilst in the depth of winter may seem like no fun at all, is actually uplifting. It’s different each week which stops me getting bored. It’s challenging so Sarah and I at a Bootcamp Bootfest, a I’m always pushing myself out of my comsocial event in aid of Combat Stress fort zone and best of all it’s led by Harry McFee. Harry is a veteran soldier and ex physical trainer for Army recruits. His explanations of the exercises can sometimes leave us feeling dazed and confused but he has that gift of making us a community, of bringing us together and sharing the successes.

Our Whatsapp group was formed as people who turned up to get a bit fitter, began to heckle (affectionately) and offer support and encouragement to each other, to seek each other out for challenges, comfort, drinks and everything in between. It’s a gift to gather a random group of people and help them to pay attention to and celebrate not only to what makes them different but also to what they share and Harry enabled us to do this.

We are fortunate that our village has many “Harrys”. A person who reminds us that we are different, we have our own uniqueness, and deep down, we are the same and that is the most amazing thing about us all. There are many events and activities run by different people, supported in the background by others, attended and valued by others happening in our village and all of them play a valuable role in strengthening our community.

Community is the biggest thing that we can do to benefit our own wellbeing, it means that we always have support, there is always someone to turn to for comfort and for celebration and the sense of connection means that we feel valued and part of something bigger. Take a look around, who is your community? If you can answer that, that’s awesome! If not, what stops you? Seek out a group that does something that challenges you, that makes your heart sing that keeps you going back and become a part of something, get involved, it’s the best thing you can do for you.

Neighbourhood Watch

I just want to mention one event in this report. Halloween. It fell this year on Sunday evening and the children had lots of time to get excited and to make their wonderful outdoor displays. They got dressed up and the little ones were out soon after 5pm, all was going well so far. However, it seems that nearer to 7pm a group of older kids (14-17 at a guess) started touring the village and grabbing whole containers of treats and also picking up pumpkins and slinging them against the windows and doors of the properties. Eggs were also thrown. This was not an isolated incident but occurred all around the village as the youths, dressed mainly in black with their statement hoodies rampaged around spoiling the fun. I was only aware of this after reading the many, many posts on our village Facebook page the following morning, and it made me very sad and very disappointed. I decided to have a drive around the village to have a look to see if things had been exaggerated but, sadly, no. I found many instances of where this behaviour has occurred.

It is a whole year until next Halloween, but there will be other events in the Village before then not least Christmas. Please let’s not have a few spoiling things for the rest.
