I was fortunate to spend most of the month of February in warmer climates with family who since the beginning of Covid had only been seen via WhatsApp. It was a joyful time catching up with my daughter who I had not been able to hug since June 2019, and meeting my second granddaughter for the first time. On my arrival home I felt that there was change in the village, and though storm Eunice had left her mark there was a feeling of relief as if a heavy weight had been lifted. Whether this was due to being released from Covid restrictions and a return to some sense of normality or just the beginning of spring, who knows? But one thing I do know is that it felt good to be home.

Our fun and friendly community Physiotherapist led exercise class successfully restarted in September and is proving very popular. Participants have enjoyed the opportunity of being together again. The class is designed to improve balance, fitness and overall well-being, as well as being enjoyable. We meet on Tuesdays @ 3:30pm and Fridays @ 10:30am in the main hall at Tangmere Village Centre.

Orchard update

We finally managed to get the ladders down to the orchard and do some pruning of the vine.

It’s a straggly thing wanting to grow in all directions and particularly on the main vertical stem when we want it to produce the most growth over the top of the pergola. I will keep an eye on it this year and steel myself to prune away all the growth on the main stem. But this is difficult when you see the grapes starting to form. It’s always against My good man prun- nature to prune away burgeoning buds but I know I will have to if I want the bulk of the growth on top. The plan was always to ing and tying in! see lovely bunches of grapes hanging from the rafters of the pergola. Let’s see if I can be more disciplined this year.

Community Wardens The winter is

finally behind us and the lighter nights are here. I’m sure we are all hoping for some warmer weather and the chance to get outdoors a bit more in the fresh air, whether that is a kick about with a ball or a stroll with family, friends or the dog. We are very lucky to have such lovely places to visit that are right on our doorstep and no less the lovely recreation field that sits just about in the middle of the village.

The green is such an asset to the village and has a lot to offer. There is the outdoor gym equipment and MUGA for people who want to keep fit and play tennis or other ball games like football and basketball, then there is the skate park for the brave who like to hurl themselves off the top of the ramps on their bikes, scooters and skateboards doing tricks and stunts at breakneck speeds.

There are the various items of play equipment with something for children of all ages and abilities. Parents/family members are quite often seen sitting on a bench or the grass either enjoying the fresh air or chatting with other parents while the children let of a bit of steam and run some energy off. ChilDawn White dren playing together on the equipment making up games like keeping their feet of the ground in case the make-believe shark gets them!

It really is lovely to see and if you sit and listen their imaginative minds are wonderful.

The green itself is lovely space for a walk around, there are benches for stopping awhile and watching the world go by or

maybe a picnic on the grass.

Watching the birds busy about in the tress. You might even catch a cricket match when the season starts, the possibilities are endless.

This is the green that everyone wants to enjoy and mostly we do but sadly there are some who spoil this lovely space and the enjoyment for others by their thoughtless behaviour. Sadly littering, especially around the skatepark and MUGA is a big problem with sweet wrappers and soft drinks empties left lying around for someone else to clear away when there are a number of litter bins a very short walk away. We have also had several occasions where glass bottles were Gareth Jones smashed particularly on the tarmac on and around the skatepark, teen shelter and MUGA, we have also had broken glass on the grass which is so dangerous for children and animals and is very hard to spot. The other main problem is people not picking up after their dogs. A nice time outdoors can be completely ruined if you have had the misfortune to stand in dog poo.

All the things I’ve mentioned are so avoidable if people would only take responsibility for clearing up after themselves. If you see anyone leaving litter or dog poo lying around and you don’t feel you can mention it to them yourself, please get in touch with us. We will need a description and what you saw, and we are very happy to talk to people about this and after all they both carry a fine if caught and I’m sure you will all agree there are better ways to spend your money!

Chairman’s Report Following the damage caused by the February storm, WSCC confirmed that the Covid 19 test centre on the airfield will be closed permanently from mid-March.

With the completion of the sewage pumping station it now means that the gates to the airfield will no longer be managed for the first time in 2 years. We will be involved in the discussions regarding secure access for the allotment holders to ensure they are not inconvenienced by the changes.

We shall also be working to restore the bus-stops that were closed when the testing site opened. Whilst there has been no formal statement regarding the restoration of the stops, the more attention is shown to the issue the more likely it is that they are restored. Our argument is quite simple. Residents living between the Museum and the wedding dress shop would have a significant walk to a bus stop in Meadow Way, potentially trapping the more vulnerable in the village.

There have been two planning meetings to consider what events will be put on in Tangmere during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Thursday 2nd June to Sunday 5th June.

The activities will be advertised around

the village, and will consist of:  a beacon lighting ceremony on the recreation field on Thursday 2nd June,  a village wide house decoration or window decoration event where residents are encouraged to dress their house in bunting and flags and residents will be encouraged to promenade around the village on Friday 3rd June. We are also looking to arrange an informal open garden opportunity if residents want to do so.  a competition to make and decorate a “Tangmere Tart” which will be judged by local foodies with the winner confirmed during the Jubilee Café at the village centre on Saturday 4th June.

The village centre will be dressed in bunting created by the younger residents, with gifts for all.

Residents will be encouraged to hold their own street party on Sunday 5th June, the date for the Queen’s Lunch. Street parties or just a garden party will be real favourites with the children on a nice sunny June afternoon! No Jubilee would be complete without a decorated mug , and we shall be commissioning a local artist to design the Tangmere Mug, which will be available to order and keep on the top shelf!

Tangmere sWIfts Spring was in the air at the March meeting. Many of the members brought along small but beautiful flower arrangements, most using real flowers but one was made entirely of hand made knitted and crocheted flowers. We were also entertained by Cheryl who gave a very informative talk on the role of women during the Second World War. The April meeting will see 2 members leading a craft workshop that everyone will be encouraged to join in with.

April also sees membership renewal time. New members are always welcome, so why not come, join in the activity and then hopefully join the WI. It costs £44 for the year and includes membership to the national Women’s Institute.

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30 at the community centre .

Times past ……… No. 19 Tangmere village is unusual in many respects in that it was before 1900 a small country parish with a village inn a small shop and a few small cottages. This changed when the airfield was built. The RAF Tangmere base then became the dominant feature of this small village. When the RAF base closed the land reverted back to pasture. The village was restored as people returned to the MOD houses and later on new homes were constructed. I have been looking at some of the memorials in the village.

The Military Museum, a significant building, comprising a large display of military aircraft and other artefacts. Some residents may know that it has a small garden of remembrance within its grounds.

On 11 November 2021 an annual Armistice Day Remembrance Service was held in the Memorial Garden. The service was conducted by the Museum’s Chaplin, Reverend Trevor Marshall, Vicar of St Andrew’s church, Tangmere. The Museum’s Chairman delivered the exhortation and a wreath was laid.

St Andrews Church, Tangmere, is the prominent feature in the village with a substantial history that is well documented on the Tangmere Local History website.

Each November a remembrance service is held in the church garden alongside the large collection of Commonwealth War Grave Commission head stones. Apart from the details recorded on each headstone little else is known about these persons. I am aware that visitors seeking to trace ancestors visit this garden and are frustrated by lack of information.

Common questions are; who attended and when was the dedication ceremony; who authorised the burial of these people in 12

Tangmere, why were they not taken to RAF Hendon Cemetery. It would take some considerable effort to investigate this and all the circumstances surrounding these graves.

There are many living relatives who have a connection to Tangmere but who are unaware that their ancestors are remembered in graves in this country parish. Some of the graves record the person is Canadian, others from New Zealand and yet others from South Africa. Recently a wreath was laid at TAM on behalf of a living relative of one of the seven crew members who perished when a Halifax crashed at RAF Tangmere on 19 November 1943. A year or two ago I met with a group of German Motorcyclists on a tour of the South Coast looking for their relatives gravestone. We looked over the 13 German graves with great interest, and I was told that they were part of an advance invasion force, their plane crashed in Langstone Harbour.

I could not answer the question about how did these German nationals end up in Tangmere?

Some residents will know about the WW1 memorial tablet situated on the North wall of the church. It is a carved marble stone with 7 names.

A local historian did some investigations and uncovered details of the individuals but nothing is known about the circumstances of the dedication service of how the work was funded and the names chosen.

The finger signpost and headstone at the junction of Church Lane was paid for by a subscription raised in the village. Some details of the dedication service are in the TLHG web site together with photographs taken at the time. This small WW2 memorial is unusual for a village the size of Tangmere. It is thanks to a far sighted Parish Council that was committed to remembering the many who gave their lives. For the past thirty years it has been

maintained by the late Travers Johnson and John Rudkin. It remains to be seen who will take on this duty of care now that both previous carers are no longer able to do so.

The memorial garden alongside the village allotment gardens was established in memory of the persons who were killed in the bombing August 16th 1940. It was created with the help of students from the University of Chichester who took to planting the trees and created individual time capsules. It is now looked after by the Allotment Steward and the volunteers from the allotments on behalf of the Parish Council. Quite a lot of questions and not many answers at the moment. We can only hope that in the fullness of time details will

emerge and that the village history will be brought up to date for the enjoyment of future generations who come to live in our village.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties The second phase of archaeological investigations will commence across the Tangmere SDL site in May. These will take place in line with the outline planning application proposals and will be undertaken for around three months. A full report of the findings will be shared with West Sussex Historic Environment Record and Chichester District Council in due course. Tangmere Flower Club Everyone really enjoyed our February workshop making both a flower arrangement in a votive dish and a dried flower picture arrangement to take home at the end of the evening.

Our visit to Forge Flowers, Stane Street, Halnaker in March where Jane Walker led a Spring Arrangement Workshop was a lovely “hands on” event making an Easter arrangement.

February was the month of the storms, with storm Eunice in particular doing her worst!

We weren’t too badly affected but Nigel and his team did have to rebuild the Brassica cage as that was no match for the wind, the purple sprouting broccoli valiantly went on producing its delicious harvest but now we’re looking forward to the first tips of the asparagus …….appearing roll on spring!

The polytunnel has been cleaned and the soil rotivated as it had become compacted over the years ,soon be time to start sowing the tomato and chilli seeds so we’ll have a summer bounty to show for all the hard work.

We fielded a good team for the quiz on the 4th of March at Tangmere primary school due to collective brainpower (not just horticultural) we won ,and enjoyed a fun evening with many other local teams coming within a few points of our score.

Thanks to the quizmaster the Reverend Trevor Marshal for putting all the questions together, and hosting the evening very successfully.

Our AGM will be held on the 24th of April and we will be taking part in the flower and produce sale at the Jubilee Café in the Village Centre on the afternoon of Saturday 4th June to celebrate the Queen’s platinum Jubilee.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, It has been proposed that an area of the churchyard is not mowed as often as usual in order to provide an area where wildlife can flourish. The map shows where this area will be.

Please note that this is an area with older graves so that those who are visiting loved ones who have passed away in the last 70 years will not be affected. Similarly, this is not near the War Graves and RAF Tangmere graves.

The 27th March is Mothering Sunday where we welcome everyone to come and receive a posy of flowers. This will be a service where we welcome families of all ages to come and join us in our “Mother” church of St Andrew’s. This will be at the usual time of 9:15. Mothering Sunday 2 years ago was the first Sunday when churches were closed for Covid lockdown, so it is doubly important this year.

On Good Friday, 15th April, there will be a service at 12:00 and following on from the success of our Advent craft workshop, there will be a Good Friday children’s workshop in the afternoon at 3 o’clock where we will have arts and crafts as well as the opportunity to learn about the death and resurrection of Christ.

Easter Sunday starts with a Service of the Light at 5:30 a.m (or when the churchwardens have woken me up!) This will be followed by refreshments (possibly bacon sandwiches!) For those more suited to a lie-in, we will have our usual service at 9:15.

Villagers will, I am sure, be aware of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

Situated in a corner of the old Tangmere airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left in 1958.

April 2nd will see the opening of the Museum’s exhibition commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict. The exhibition will run through until the end of August.

On May 1st we shall have our Falklands Day with pilots from that conflict coming to Tangmere Military Aviation Museum. The Museum has in its aircraft inventory a Se Harrier that took part in the conflict.

The Museum aims to promote public awareness of the United Kingdom’s military aviation heritage, educating present and future generations in military aviation. In September the Museum will be hosting an exhibition to mark the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Museum which serves as a memorial to airmen and airwomen who gave their lives in the service of this country. The Museum is now managed and run entirely by volunteers. In 2017 was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

Now one of the UK’s leading aviation museums, it is home to an impressive display of historic aircraft with a unique collection of aviation memorabilia stretching from the First World War through to the Cold War. Amongst the many attractions, there are numerous interactive displays and aircraft cockpits and simulators for visitors to experience. Light refreshments may be purchased in the Museum’s acclaimed Cockpit Cafe. A museum with something for all members of the family to enjoy

Comments from your District and County Councillor Storm Eunice certainly left its mark on the village’s trees. WSCC has applied to remove the second Poplar on The Green, with two new trees to be planted.

WSCC’s works to do with Ash dieback (£4M alone) and other highway trees as well as Hyde’s recent tree works around Garland Square show how much goes into managing them. Despite their challenges, we and our environment do need trees and hedges and with appropriate planning and management we can live with and benefit from them now and into the future.

The Covid pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine have reminded us that we should not take for granted all the improvements in our lives over recent decades. We have become preoccupied with a first world mindset of expectations and aspirations that rely very heavily on a set of increasingly complex, globally interconnected and fragile financial assumptions. As we know in our personal lives, it is all very well living life to the full but it does not take much of a change in health and finances to radically change one’s circumstances, especially if you do not have savings or family to fall back on.

As a society we have become used to the public sector providing a wide range of services and support. This has and is being reflected in the support that Government and Local Authorities have provided during the Pandemic and into the current higher inflationary environment.

There will always be calls for more, but ultimately it all needs to be paid for by taxes (e.g. via higher rates and expanding taxbases) and still difficult choices have to be made.

To keep pace with growing needs and costs, WSCC has increased its Council Tax by 2.99% and CDC by 2.93% in line with Referendum limits. WSCC has increased its borrowing requirement by £100M to cover additional capital investment in Social Services and Highways. Though CDC is debt free (mainly due to the transfer of its housing stock in 2001), it is using £Ms of its reserves to maintain services, including the continuation of its Council Tax Support scheme and increased environment related activities. The council tax base for both Authorities has expanded in line with housing development, aiding the balancing of current books, but more people need more services in the future.

Recent applications for new development in the Parish include horticultural workers accommodation at the South end of TAN’s glasshouses (21/03231/ FUL) and an Eastward extension to the Southernmost warehouse on City Fields Business Park (22/00066/FUL). Now that the Tangmere SDL’s CPO has been confirmed, the final stages of transferring the land to Countryside’s control and the S106 Planning Obligations Agreement negotiations are being entered into.

On the 4th March I went to say my final goodbye to my friend, Dan Corrick. He was, in fact, the husband of a very good friend that I made in the first school that I taught at, who was my rock when I got divorced. He was killed on January 30th at the age of 43 whilst out on a bike ride. His family were his world. Listening to the stories at his eulogy was both heart-breaking and so joyous. He had been such an amazing dad, husband, brother and son and he will have a left a Dan shaped hole in all future family events.

Grief is such an uncomfortable and distressing process, it can feel like it will always be there, never changing. I met Dan when he and Nikki first started dating and I was honoured to do a reading at their wedding. I did not, however, know Dan that well, for various reasons mainly to do with geography, but I still feel the grief for his death and I feel it for my friend and their beautiful girls. This family are a fantastic example of how being a part of your community fully can support you in these times. In the eulogy given by his parents, they pointed out that they had not had to think about what to eat for 3 of the last 4 weeks as the community had closed around them, fed them and held them in their grief. This is the power of community. This is why the social connections you can make within your community can be so beneficial to maintaining good mental health or for supporting you on those days where you feel less mentally healthy, where their support may help you to recover quicker. This is why we help ourselves so much more if we are on more than waving terms with our neighbours, in so many ways. In return, we can help them in many ways too.

Dan was able to perform one last heroic act on his death, he was an advocate of organ donation and in his death enabled others to live. He was also a regular blood donor, giving his blood to help others at their own times of medical crisis. I gave blood on the 14th March in memory of Dan Corrick and I urge you to carry out your own heroic act if you can. Let your family know if you would be willing to donate your organs in the event of your death so that they know your wishes and, if you can, then give blood regularly.

* * * * Pugsley This month we would love to introduce you to Pugsley. Pugsley is a very handsome 10 year old black male cat. He has been with us at the rescue since November as his owners were moving to a property that did not allow pets. He did originally live with cats but he was a bit mean to her so we had to make the decision to split them. Pugsley is a very confident and friendly boy who loves to have a fuss made of him. He will come straight up for a stroke and will be rubbing around your legs for lots of attention. He is also very playful but occasionally he can get a little bit carried away and can nip but he doesn’t mean to be nasty. He also does not really like being pulled around and would be much better suited to a quiet home without any young children. Pugsley would also like to be the only pet in the household.

Neighbourhood Watch

The storms have passed leaving some of us with fences down and trees lost. I think all of us in the village lost power for at least two hours. It is SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) that supply our power. In the event of a power cut the simple number to phone is 105. Definitely worth making a note of as it saves all the stress of trying to find who to phone in the dark. My other bit of advice would be to make sure you have your mobile phone and other electronic devices fully charged if there is a forecast of severe storms, once the power has gone off it’s too late.

We are all feeling pretty helpless for the poor folks of Ukraine, I know lots of residents have contributed to filling the shoe boxes to be transported to some refugees, I feel sure they will be most gratefully received. Unfortunately the ghastly scammers have already taken advantage of the situation and are defrauding people out of monetary donations meant for Ukraine. My advice would be to only donate to the recognised charities, for example DEC (Disasters Emergency committee) the government is doubling every donation made to this charity, or IRC (International Rescue Committee) or UNICEF. You can be sure that the money goes where you want it to go with these charities. Let’s hope that by the time you are reading this the situation has improved enormously.

* * * * An allotment holder’s perspective When we took over our overgrown plot in March 2015 we decided to have it for 1 year, to see if we can grow anything and if we can commit enough time to it.

This will be our eighth year!

We enjoy it very much! We have produced not just delicious fruit and vegetables but also beautiful wild flowers, flowers for cutting and flowers to enjoy with fellow allotment holders, friendly locals passing-by and visitor to the museum.

It’s such a great feeling eating something you grew from a tiny seed!

There are beautiful insects, bees and birds visiting the allotment. Freddy the frog lives in our little pond and hedgehogs make an appearance in the night! We have even seen a pheasant! It is a lot of hard work, we love spending as much time as we can on the allotment. It is our gym, our happy place! We work hard, but take a flask and have a little break and take a moment to enjoy the fruits of our labour. The key is little and often!

Something we have to remind ourselves as we would like everything to be done straight away! Rome wasn’t built in one day! We have met lots of lovely people, shared ideas and enjoy seeing what other holders do!

There are social events, working parties and BBQs. We are excited about the upcoming growing season.
