By the end of the second week of September the village seemed to be back to pre-Covid times, if that is at all possible! The kids were back at school, the traffic on the roads had increased and the players had reconvened their rehearsals for Aladdin. The Parish Council had decided that they would rezoom face-to-face meetings, the youth Club had begun it’s autumn season with some nest building on the field, and the sWIfts and the Flower club were able to hold their meetings at the village centre.

The area where the new play equipment was to be installed had been fenced off, to the interest of a few youngsters in the vicinity. The village centre had seen various regular keep fit hirers start back including Thank you to Sheila TaiChiFit, as well as some new activities such as Bounce, and for the little Wyers for her front ones, Jiggy Wrigglers. There have been bookings for private parties and cover picture of the some Scottish scouts stayed in the main hall overnight. The “Tangmere harvested wheat Twinners” met in Itchenor for a very pleasant mid-morning walk along bales behind Saxon the shoreline path and a very enjoyable pub lunch at the Ship Inn. The Meadow. community garden had an open afternoon with tea and scrummy homemade cakes for sale and St Andrew’s held its Battle of Britain service on a Sunday afternoon, not to mention the new Pram club that started at the village centre.

What a busy village we have and I’m sure I haven't covered half of what else goes on, so if you have something you would like to share about Tangmere please let me know.

TaiChiFit, lead by a Chartered Physiotherapist, is a good all-round exercise class which is excellent for balance, core strength and cardiovascular fitness. The hour long sessions restarted for a fresh new term in September on Tuesdays at 3:30pm and Fridays at 10:30am. We shall continue to be careful and abide by the guidelines current at the time.

Participants wear loose clothing and soft comfortable shoes, everyone works to their own abilities.

Hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, .

Last time I spoke to you, I told you about our pet of the month the rabbit Dairylea Dunker, well sadly, he is still waiting to find his forever home.

I am happy to update everyone on our recent Virtual Fayre. You may have seen that we were unable to hold our normal Summer Fayre at The Centre again this year.

Which was of course hard for everyone as it is our biggest fundraising event of the year. Therefore, my staff decided to hold a virtual fayre online to try to raise some money for The Centre. The virtual fayre included a raffle, auction and photography contest. I am pleased to let everyone know that in total the virtual fayre raised £4418! My staff want to thank everyone who donated or joined in the competitions, this money will really help us to continue caring for the animals at The Centre.

I overheard my staff talking the other day about a sweet older female cat that had come into the rescue. This little cat had just come in and while one of the staff was adding her details on to our system, she then realised that this cat was actually rehomed from us many years ago. You see sadly this cat’s owner had died and her son had brought the cat into us, he lived far away and did not know it was from us. The reason why I wanted to tell you this story is because I wanted everyone to know that most good rescue like us will always have back the animals that they rehomed to find him or her a new home. We do not like to think about passing away but I think it is important for family to know that if you adopt a rescue cat it will always have somewhere to go. We were full at the time we were asked to take this cat which meant they went to the bottom of the waiting list but if we had known she was from us she would have skipped the que and saved a lot of time.

Tangmere community film club began at the beginning of 2020 just before the first lockdown. We were able to have a few showings during the year when restrictions were eased and have since shown four films this year.

The showings are on the third Friday of the month in the main hall at the village centre using the multimedia equipment which was installed in 2019.

The annual membership for the film club is £5 per adult and will be due this October and in return as a member you will receive notification by email of dates and films that will be shown each month.

If you know of any resident who is interested in joining but does not use email or a mobile phone and you are willing to let them know about showings, then please let us know. The film club is funded by Tangmere Parish Council for residents of the village and organised by members of Tangmere Action Group. TANGMERE PRIMARY ACADEMY We are all very excited to start the new academic year without bubbles and are looking forward to being able to enrich the curriculum again with trips, visitors and getting out into the community.

This term the children will be working on the whole school theme ‘Never Ending Story’ Within this theme the children will be looking at a range of fairy tales and/ or fantasy stories while thinking about how many different stories or tales do they know. They will then embark or a range of activities related to their fantasy stories/ tales to enable them to answer our global problem of ‘How can we use what we learn from stories to impact our world?’

With the world opening up again, we are now able to start offering some after school clubs - starting off with Year 5 & 6 Archery club. Years 3 & 4 are enjoying developing these skills too within their PE sessions this term.

This September we have a new addition to the school site- our very own Clothes Bank! The Bank is situated at the front of the school for families to donate unwanted items such as clothes, pairs of shoes, handbags, belts, bedsheets, soft toys that are washed and un-soiled/ damaged. All donations are collected and weighed on a regular basis creating funds for the school.

Community Wardens

It is great to see so many people out and about enjoying the limited good weather. All in all it has been a good summer in the Village but there has still been some ASB in a few areas. Hangar Drive has seen an increase in activity, criminal damage being at the forefront of that. Cars and trees have been damaged and houses have been egged, if anyone has any information regarding these matters then please get in touch. Also, there are 3 mopeds that are regularly using the cut through between Hangar Drive and Lysander Way, we are actively trying to get the details of these bikes, riding on the pavement is both illegal and dangerous. If you have teenager that uses a Moped please remind them that being able to ride on the road is a privilege that can be taken away if they are not using their machines safely.

Continuing the theme of Motorcycles, we are also aware of motorcycles being used in the fields behind Campbell Road and Mannock Road. The landowner has not given permission for this and those involved have been named and should expect a visit from the Police with regard to this.

E scooters are still a problem, as we have said already they are illegal anywhere except private land with the land owners permission. The Police are still actively enforcing the laws around E scooters so please remind any users within your family that they should not be using them including on the recreation field.

Some of our time is not spent on ASB we also deal with peoples welfare, we carry out weekly welfare visits to several residents for lots of reasons, ill health and loneliness being two of the reasons. If you have concerns about a neighbour of friend then please give us a call, we can visit the person or make referrals to services that can help with a whole range of matters.

Chairman’s The September council new homes planned meeting marked the to be built to the Report start of the Neighbourhood Plan policy 6 delivery. Policy 6 relates to the re-allocation of the village allotments to a new larger site in Church Lane in order to allow the Museum to expand their buildings to accommodate the aircraft currently left out in the open.

Thursday 9th September meeting spent 2 hours discussing various aspects of the move, including the timing of the initiation of the legal process required to relocate a statutory allotment. It is unlikely that this process will be completed before the end of 2023, mainly because the land in Church Lane will not be made ready until then.

The Parish Council is working closely with the Tangmere Allotments committee to set out a timetable that works for all involved and the Clerk was instructed to commence the process. There will be regular meetings to discuss and work on this policy delivery over the next 2 years.

Also on the September agenda was the subject of the community facility building or buildings that will be provided in the village as a result of the Andrew Irwin

West of the village, but this item was postponed to 7th October to a special meeting specifically called to have this discussion.

A reason to delay this important decision was to await Chichester District Council’s conclusion of the Section 106 agreement with the developer which covers their legal obligation to provide community facilities. Hopefully the parish will have this information available for the 7th October, so the scale and funding of such building will allow an informed discussion of the options available.

The starting position in the Neighbourhood Plan is policy 2(ix) which states: “There will be a new community facility provided in the broad location shown on the concept plan to serve the new and existing communities….”

All residents are invited to attend the meeting on 7th October starting at 7:30pm in Tangmere village centre to hear and be involved in the discussion of this important issue.

Recently the news has been full of environmental problems which are happening all around us.

My mind has been thinking about what has happened to effect our lives in Tangmere. For example last night a massive thunderstorm occurred and I was reminded of a similar event that occurred in 2003.

The lightening strike landed on the church spire and caused severe damage to the building such that it was closed for several months and services were held in the village hall.

How many remember the great storm October 1987. I lost a shed and fencing from my garden this was nothing compared to the problems facing the village the following morning. Again in 1994 Chichester was affected by floods which lasted for weeks. Pipes and pumps lined the streets and the Westhampnett roundabout was waist deep in water. Who remembers the wind surfer sailing along the A27 between Tangmere and the Sainsbury roundabout. At the same time the spring running under the playing fields erupted and flooded the village main roads making the corner by the Museum impassable by foot and car. As if this was not enough it was repeated several times 2001 and a couple of years later. The Waitrose delivery van was stuck in the flood with my Christmas goodies on board. My 4x4 was man enough to pull the Waitrose van into dry land and I was able to rescue my dinner along with a few others due for delivery.

Tangmere had its own hostelry which was called the Tangmere Hotel. Enjoyed by many up to the time it was demolished to allow a runway for the airfield in 1940. Later a new pub was built called the Bader Arms. For many years this was a gathering place for folk who had an association with RAF Tangmere. Sadly it became less well used and closed a few years ago only to arise again as the TANGMERE COOP and POST OFFICE. It is all part of the changes to our village and we wish Dawn and her staff every success.

Men’s breakfast at Brick Kiln Garden centre As we come through the restrictions with Covid we are re-establishing our monthly men’s breakfast which is open to all men to attend. Traditionally men are quite isolated and tend not to open up in regard to issues which concern or worry them. Over the last year or more I would anticipate that many men would become more isolated and increased adverse effects on their mental health would certainly be a worry.

The men’s breakfast provides an opportunity for men to gather together to talk and socialise. In addition, we provide an inspiring speaker each month. These breakfasts started in 2016 and numbers prior to Covid had risen to 40-60+. Many of our speakers, some high profile, have had severe challenges in their lives and they relate how their lives have been guided, challenged, or changed by their faith in Jesus.

Our new venue is the Brick Kiln Garden Centre in Chichester where they are opening an hour early for us and provide a full breakfasts and facilities for the speaker. Our next men's breakfast is on 23rd October. We welcome David Robinson, ex Royal Protection Officer to the Queen and subsequently a regional security manager. David is a Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) in The Church of England. More information is available from our website about him and the next speakers planned this year.

Rehearsals for Aladdin started at the beginning of September where some new young members were welcomed into the cast. This new addition could not have happened at a better time as the occurrence of the pandemic redesigned the lives of some of the existing members to such an extent that they had to stand down from the cast. But the show must go on and with a little bit of “tweaking here and a large amount of TLC there” we will have a Pantomime for December assuming that the release of restrictions continue. The weekend of the 3rd and 4th December is when the panto will be performed, so please put the dates in your diary and buy tickets to support your local community drama group.

Tangmere WI The Tangmere sWIfts are thrilled to be able to meet up again.

As the group don’t normally hold a formal meeting in August they met for a Coffee Morning in Haleybridge Walk, and saw most members attend. We all, not only enjoyed the refreshments and good company, but also lovely weather. The September meeting saw us enjoy a fantastic Quiz, provided by fellow members Fiona and Jo. Here is the winning team of Ann, Sue, and Sue. Our October meeting is our General Meeting which is an annual occurrence as is, our birthday in November, which we always celebrate with a Party.

We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at Tangmere Village Centre between 7.30-9.30pm. Visitors are always welcome, and you never know you might like us so much that you will want to become a member.

Twinning Association

The Twinning Association members, like everyone else, are looking forward to meeting up and socialising, with 18 months worth of news to catch up on. We have several events organised for the coming months, and are hoping to get across to visit our friends in Hermanville in May 2022.

We held our usual “win a prize every time” tombola on Village Day, and have some other social events planned for the rest of 2021.

Down at the garden we continue to have a friendly and fruitful year.

We have enjoyed bumper crops of asparagus, beans, potatoes and carrots, although like many others this year the tomatoes have been very disappointing which is most unusual especially in the poly tunnel. We’ve also had plentiful amounts of basil, parsley chillies, onions and sweetcorn ….delicious !

We have also enjoyed picking lovely flowers including Nigella, corn flowers, corn cockles, lavender and gypsophelia and now we’re enjoying the gorgeous colours of beautiful dahlias.

We have been delighted with the new pizza oven, it works a treat, the pizzas, chicken and sausages cook so well and it also warms us up on the cooler evenings! On the whole however we’ve been lucky with the weather for our bring and share meals and for our annual Open Day, where we welcome many of you to share tea and homemade cakes.

Then on into the Autumn months when we will be busy with the crab apples for delicious jellies and apples for the scrumptious pies, do come and join us in the feast!

Tangmere Allotment Group We have had a very positive year despite Covid restrictions, and allotmenteer's are now getting good rewards for their hard work through the year. New plot holders have been introduced, and we look forward to meeting those taking on plots that have been vacated this year. The allotments are looking great, with several people having bright and inspiring sunflowers growing on their plots. Many winter crops are being planted and we are anticipating and even more productive year in 2022. We feel extremely privileged to have a variety of wildlife on the plots including slow worms, hedgehogs and bats flying over at twilight to feed on insects.

So who are these Christians?

I often wonder what people think when they meet a Christian.

What do they expect us to be like?

There is no standard answer! We are all different. We range in age from newly borns to those who are in their nineties. We are from every walk of life, and every background. Some are Sussex born and bred, and others come from further afield.

But one thing that we have in common is that we try to live by God’s great commandments: Love God and Love your Neighbour.

Not that we always succeed. One of the other things about Christians is that we a human and have human failings. When we try to follow those commandments, we don’t always get it right. But at least we try!

One of the challenges that we face today is how we can show our love for our neighbour. We support local and international charities, we open the church every day so that people can come and pray in a place that is calming and peaceful. And, of course, we are there on Sunday ready to welcome our neighbour into our church.

The invitation to join us on a Sunday may not be the easiest invitation to accept. So how about you come and join us for one of our social events? Get to know us before you come along on a Sunday. We are a welcoming group of people who are just like you. Come and meet us and find out who these Christians are.

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) - Update from Countryside Properties The public inquiry in relation to Chichester District Council’s Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the Tangmere Strategic Development Location took place between 7th and 9th September 2021.

All information in relation to the CPO inquiry is available to view on Chichester District Council’s website. A decision by the Secretary of State on the CPO is expected in early 2022.

Comments from your District and County Councillor WSCC (via https:// yourvoice.westsussex.gov.uk) and CDC (via https://chichester.gov.uk/letstalksurveys) put out a wide range of proposed service changes, Policies and Strategies for public consultation. Currently WSCC is consulting on its Transport Plan and its Flood Risk Strategy (especially relevant given recent events).

Consultations give the public the opportunity to see what is going on, coming up and put their views across. Decision Makers have to have regard to what is submitted during these consultations, but ultimately it is up to the Decision Maker(s) to weigh up all the information and then make a Decision. Decisions should not be made on: sentiment; emotion; information/data that has been superseded by new substantiated evidence; or existing Policies that are out of date either by themselves being flawed or due to changes in circumstances.

As the Tangmere SDL’s progress through the Planning and Compulsory Purchase processes continues, time is closing in on the points at which the Parish will have to make decisions on future facilities which will shape the future for it for decades to come. These decisions will also involve a scale of financial implications/resources that will need very careful consideration.

The Neighbourhood Plan’s (NP) Vision of One Village is a key guiding principle, which has fed through to the allocation of land within the SDL for combined allotments and to enable one Primary School

site for the whole village.

What has been left open during the planning process is whether the SDL’s 1100m2 provision should go toward expanding the existing Centre or another in the SDL. An example of a consideration not available at the time of the NP’s formation is the provision, within the SDL’s S106, for a £100k contribution for the fitting out of a WSCC Self-Service Library facility within a Community Building. However that facility would only be provided within a building with long opening hours and continuous staffing. Another is the scale of Community Infrastructure Levy funds the Parish would receive, in stages, over the course of the SDL’s build out and what future priorities the Parish might have over time for utilising those funds.

The frequent instances of loud vehicle noise on the A27 is something that is often raised with the Police by WSCC and CDC Councillors as it significantly affects residents adjacent to that road. As it can be imagined, dealing with this could consume a lot of Police time to catch them and prove an offence is being committed, e.g. breaking the speed limit, being driven dangerously or the vehicle is defective/inappropriately modified. As always it is very helpful if residents report such anti-social and potentially dangerous driving to the Police. The more reports the better to help the Police to concentrate their efforts on particular locations and times and support Councillors efforts to raise the profile of this issue.

Wait………….

My author of the moment is Matt Haig. He writes fabulous childrens books (“To Be A Cat”), he writes creative fiction books such as “The Midnight Library” but he also wrote “Reasons to Live”. In his early 20’s he found himself at the top of a cliff in Ibiza trying to decide whether to take 21 steps forward when there were only 20 steps left. He writes a powerful, honest and emotional story about what his world was like then and how it got better. The most important message of his book is that it did get better. He still has bad days but that moment on the cliff passed, he just had to wait for it to pass.

September 10th was World Suicide Prevention day. I guarantee there will be people reading this who have been affected by the loss of a loved one by suicide or who know how Matt felt on the top of that cliff. In the Youth Mental Health First Aid course that Positive Routes offers we teach our First Aiders how to be the person that offers hope to someone who has said that they are feeling suicidal. We show them how to help them to wait and to let them know that that feeling will pass. The thing is that we can all do that as part of our community, we can be the person to sit, listen and be the light for someone whilst they sit in dark. We can wait with them.

Worth considering as a gift to yourself or for a loved one who you know is facing their own mental health challenges right now.

Neighbourhood Watch Well summer’s gone and autumn seems to be arriving. At least the seasons are one thing we can be sure of.

There has been a rise in dog knapping in this area and generally. This is a very distressing crime and to not know what has happened to your precious pet can be devastating. The police seem to be taking this crime more seriously now and obviously, I would advise everyone to have their pet chipped and to keep some recent photos of it. I have noticed how successful the use of the village facebook page is in homing stray or lost cats and dogs.

Just a little warning about the ever changing Scams, the criminals will find every possible way to try and trick us into revealing our personal details. If something is unusual or just doesn’t seem right, please don’t trust it, online, on the phone, in the post or at the door. Be suspicious!

There is a lecture on: Tuesday 26th October – Gilt and Gorgeousness: a celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the Reign of George IV Tuesday 23rd November – Diaghilev and the Ballet Russes On both dates the lecture commences at 2 p.m. We welcome new members and the entrance fee for guests is £6 per lecture.
