Just over the A27 in Strettington there is a “boutique” heath studio which is opens 24/7. Its been open for a couple of years now in the converted farm buildings at Temple Bar and has a good following of loyal members who have seen the benefits of a small and personal studio right on their doorstep.

Tangmere Village Centre If you have an event taking place over the coming months or something special next year and as yet you have not booked a venue, why not consider the Tangmere Village Centre.

Over the past few weeks I have meet several people whilst out and about and we have had a few people popping in the garden that do not know anything about the garden and what we do. So for all you new readers, and village new comers I will explain what the garden is all about.

The garden was started 8 years ago by a small group. It was originally a horse field so an awful lot of hard work had to be done to achieve what we have today. We grow a large variety of fruit and veg though out the year which is shared between the members of the garden.

You do not need to know anything about growing fruit and veg as we have many long term members who share their knowledge willing. Unlike owning your allotment which is very rewarding but is also very hard work and many of us would find it difficult to commit to the time needed to produce the wonderful foods that can be grown on them. The garden enables you to commit whatever time you can spare as the work is shared which enables us to grow such a variety.

Along with growing produce we grow friendships! We hold supper evenings in which we bring and share a dish of food and maybe a wine or two along with good conversation. In the summer evenings it is just the ticket. We hold workdays which would be on a Saturday and we would hold a bring and share lunch which gives us time to catch up on each other’s news. The membership is £15 per adult per year which enables us to buy seeds etc for the coming year. It is very small cost which you gain back in produce many fold.

Why not pop down and see us at the garden if you would like to learn more or just want to have a look. We are at the back of Hayley Bridge walk next to the Community Orchard and the private allotments.

Twinning Association

Our latest event was a walk organised by our leader Pam who led a group of 12 intrepid members around Hunston Village and the Chichester Canal on Saturday 7th September. Afterwards the walking group enjoyed a hearty meal at the Spotted Cow where 5 other members joined us to make our number up to 17 people.

In the beginning there was Tangmere WI ………

Formed in January 1971 at Tangmere Primary school, Joan Wyers canvassed around the village to see if there was an interest and called a meeting to be held at the school. She had been told she would need about 25 to make it viable. The informal meeting took place on the 15th January, 1971. At the first meeting in February Mrs Wyers was elected as President with Mrs Barbara Best as Treasurer and Mrs Jean Bull as Secretary. We had no other meeting place in the village at the time and so the local school was used. It was a thriving group and members enjoyed the meetings. A drama group was formed and used Boxgrove hall for rehearsals for an Old Tyme Music Hall.

Eventually the Parish Council acquired the Sports Pavilion in Malcolm Road and various groups set up there. The WI moved their meetings to this venue in September 1974. Not ideal but the rent was cheaper. In September 1976 the Tangmere Community Association was formed and the WI became part of this and had a representative on the committee.

In July 1977 the WI entered a float in the Chichester Gala and won the cup for ‘New entrant’.

The Community Association negotiated with the District Council to take over the Spitfire Club premises and this finally happened in September 1978.

We moved to the Spitfire Club in October 1978 and used the Community Room for meetings.

We gave performances of the Pantomime ‘Aladdin’ there. A darts team was formed and entered the county competition. Many jumble sales and other fund raising events were also held at the venue.

In 1979 members joined with other groups and had a float at the silver Jubilee Celebrations.

In December 1986 the electrics at the building were considered to be in a dangerous state and the WI was advised not to use it as a meeting place. Sadly the WI was suspended as there was no other suitable building available at that time.

The WI reformed in February 1989 and met at the new village centre in Malcolm Road which had been built in place of the old sports pavilion. Mrs Dorothy Price was the first President of this new Tangmere WI and it is still going today with just two Members from the original WI continuing.

Darts is still popular and up until recently there was a team playing in the County Competition. Members take part in all aspects of the WI as well as supporting local events at the village centre.

When Tangmere became twinned with the French village of Hermonville-sur-Mer in 1992 the WI craft Group embroidered a picture depicting Tangmere and its links with the RAF. This was presented to the Mayor and hangs in the Hermonville Town Hall.

The craft group are still very active and have made a number of story sacks for the local primary school.

These bring stories to life for the children and are used in encouraging the whole family to enjoy reading together.

The allotments are nearly fully occupied and this year has seen some good produce from the plots. The fine weather has proved to be a bumper year for most fruits, while vegetables are growing apace. Runner bean crops have been excellent and the plots have been very attractive with a large array of flowers for cutting and/or for encouragement of bees. We have a friendly community on the plots which makes it a pleasure to give time there. We still have a couple of vacant plots – this is usual with 50 plots as people change their lifestyle commitments. Allotments Report

Victoria Cranfields Boxing Day Chutney – can be eaten the next day Fresh Ingredients:  2lb/900g onions sliced  2lb cooking apples chopped  1 pkt/340g cranberries  2pints cider vinegar  2oz/50g fresh root ginger (before peeling) finely diced  1tbsp coarse sea salt  tsp mixed spice  zest of 2 oranges Dry Ingredients  2lb naturally dried apricots chopped  1 packet dates (175g/60z) pitted and chopped  1lb raisins  Juice of 8 oranges/1 pint orange juice  2lb white sugar.

In a bowl mix the dried fruit and pour over the orange juice. Stir well. The mixture should absorb all the orange juice in approx.. 20mins Place all the fresh ingredients in a saucepan, gently bring to the boil.

The object is to let the onions go transparent, the cranberries start to pop and the apple break down.

You don’t want to lose all texture so a 5min simmer once at boiling point should do. Remember to stir.

Add the marinated fruit to the saucepan with the sugar.

Stir well and bring back to boiling point, stirring all the time. Don’t leave the saucepan at this time or the contents will catch and taint the chutney. The free liquid will start to thicken quite quickly and the chutney can then be bottled. Lid immediately.

Chairman’s Report September saw many meetings about the new development west of Tangmere.

The Parish Council had a special meeting on 11th September to update and discuss outstanding issues.

Countryside Properties, the consultants working on the Masterplan for the site, attended the Summer Fair and held their second public consultation on 26th September. After comments that some residents failed to get the flyer advertising Countryside’s July meeting, they sent the invite to the September one by post. The attendance at their events reflected the postal invite, as well as the coverage provided by the Chichester Observer.

Countryside also sent a detailed letter to residents of Saxon Meadow, outlining how the Masterplan would impact their properties following queries raised at the July consultation event.

I expect that following the September consultation event, the same sort of impact letter will be sent to residents of Hearn Close, Church Lane, Cheshire Crescent, Malcolm Road and Mannock Road, as these roads all lie adjacent to the new development. I am able to confirm that there are NO plans for any existing residential properties or gardens to be involved in the compulsory purchase order that CDC is progressing. That compulsory purchase order only covers the farmland and fields to the West of Tangmere.

Going forward, towards the end of the year, there will be a further meeting where Coun-

tryside will brief the Council on the final Masterplan before submission to CDC. I will let residents know the arrangements for this important meeting.

At the full parish meeting on 12th September many residents attended to hear details regarding the plans for securing the recreation field against trespass.

The trespass on the airfield in July helped concentrate minds regarding the vulnerable nature of the recreation field, and so it was agreed to construct a ditch and bund along Malcolm Road and Nettleton Avenue to help deter future trespass.

Plans have been made to follow the Tangmere Village Fair that was held on September 21st with a Winter Fair on 30th November. This will, for the first time, combine the traditional village Christmas fair, St Andrew’s fair, and the lighting up of the Christmas tree at the Co-op car park all on the same day.

Residents may not know that St Andrew’s Church has a right to hold a fair on St Andrew’s Day, and as that falls on Saturday 30th November, it seems appropriate to celebrate all 3 together.

There was no formal meeting in August but our Tangmere WI ladies still had opportunities to get together. Five ladies joined a tour of Barfoots farm learning about commercial vegetable growing. Three teams competed in the federation quiz and had an enjoyable and competitive evening.

We returned to the village centre in September for a card making workshop facilitated by three of our members. The results were varied and pleasing.

October sees our annual meeting where we review the last year and make plans for the future.

November is our 30th birthday when we invite guests to share a social evening with entertainment and a buffet supper.

History Group

Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on subjects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings. Our meetings are held at the Tangmere Medical Centre in the conference room, which is accessed at the rear of the building.

In September 19 members and friends had a fascinating guided tour of Edes House, in Chichester. We learnt of its important status when it was built, the history of those who had lived there over the years, and changes in recent times since it was purchased by WSCC. Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 10th October, 7.30pm, when Malcolm Barrett will talk to us about the History of the West Sussex Police Force.

The last meeting of the year - our annual social evening - takes place on Friday th 29 November, at Tangmere House.

Well summer is becoming a distant memory and autumn is with us, bringing darker evenings, so just a reminder to take care if answering the door after dark, please use the chain if you have one, if not think about having one fitted. Leave a light on or maybe a radio playing if you are out for the evening, just anything to make a potential burglar think twice about choosing your house.

I will just say a word about an important issue that the police are currently focusing on, modern slavery. This very much a hidden crime but one that is increasing and is happening everywhere and probably in Tangmere. Signs to look out for are people that may be bring picked up for work in Mini Vans very early and not home again till late. More people living in a property than is appropriate. People doing jobs for which they are not properly equipped or clothed. I could name many more signs, but if you are suspicious of possible modern slavery it can be reported on a Confidential Helpline 0800121700 or alternatively online at www.modernslaveryhelpline.org. It is shameful that this is increasing in 2019.

Registration takes place from 2:00pm followed by the big build of shelters in the grounds of the Cathedral. This is followed by the official judging and award of ‘Best Shelter’, a BBQ, a service in the Cathedral to thank everyone involved and an evening of entertainment for all our participants.

Comments from your District and County Councillor One of the lessons from the incursion onto the old Airfield Apron last July was the need for residents who experience and witness criminal and anti-social behaviour to formally report to the Police. Without those formal reports, the Police have little evidence on which to justify conducting “Section 61” assessments that can lead to their directing unauthorised occupiers off of other peoples’ land. The best means of reporting is proving to be online – the frustrations of the 101 route are dissuading and inhibiting residents from reporting at all.

Progress is being made on the Masterplan for the Strategic Development on the West side of the village, but slower than originally planned. Work on the Compulsory Purchase Order is also slow (as is the way with complex legal processes), but currently it’s planned to get it in front of CDC’s Cabinet and Council in late November.

There is a long way to go before any actual development occurs!

Back to School

School holidays and half terms are often a hot topic. For some they are a godsend, no longer having to find family and friends or paying for holiday clubs who can take the kids each day because you simply don’t get 13 weeks annual leave from work. For others it can be a heart wrenching time where parents and carers feel that they finally had that precious time with their little (and not so little) ones that they don’t get when the busyness of life takes over. I have had a couple of friends chat to me and say that their children have struggled with the start of the year, wondering what they can do to help. I, myself, have experience of this with both of my children. My son would get a stomachache the night before school, feeling nauseous and headachy. It was my son’s anxiety around being separated from me during school and at other times that led me to become a Relax Kids Coach and we learnt together how to help him through these times of heightened emotion. My daughter is a different personality and yet last year and for the first couple of days this year she found crossing the threshold into school tricky. This is one level of anxiety over separating from the parent and going into a different place. There are many other levels and many reasons for anxiety around school.

So what can we do to support our young people at these times?

First, give the young person time to talk.

Hold back from making any comment whilst

they talk, particularly avoid “You’ll be fine”, “It’ll be OK” or “There’s nothing to worry about”. This could stop them saying what the issue is as they may think that it is their thinking that is the problem. Really listen whilst they talk, with your full attention.

Ask them what they think might help, they may come up with totally undoable and unrealistic stuff but is there anything in there that can be converted into a useful strategy?

Talk through what will happen and the routine of the day. Give them as much information as you can about what their day at school will be like.

Read books that can help them to understand their anxiety. I read “The Invisible String” by Patrice Karst to my children or there is “William The What If Wonder” by Carol Wulff as well as many other great books Draw a symbol such as heart on your childs arm and get them to draw the same on yours. Tell them that during the day whenever they are missing you to look at that symbol and know that you will be thinking of them.

Time to Present – Our Summer Term Theme At the start of the Summer term, we began our new curriculum. We launched a whole school themed named ‘What a Wonderful World’. Within this theme, each class focussed on a different aspect of our wonderful world, through having ‘Time to Be… geographers, artists, historians etc. The aim was to answer the question: ‘What do we know about our Wonderful World?’ and solve the problem: ‘How can we make our world a more wonderful place to live in?’.

At the end of the term, grown-ups were invited in to see our solutions. This term, our whole school theme is ‘Never Ending Story’.

Nursery Re-Opening In December the school had to reluctantly rehouse the nursery in an alternative space within the school, due to thieves taking a significant amount of lead from the Nursery class roof.

This caused a considerable amount of external and internal damage.

It was eventually replaced with the existing beautiful organ in the 1950’s paid for by donations from the RAF personnel serving at the RAF Air Station Tangmere and others.

The alter frontals are still in use and maybe the wardens can confirm that the white and violet frontals are the original ones referred to in this report.

The Tangmere school room is no longer in the village. The location of the old school is shown on old village maps which can be viewed on the Tangmere local History web site. It is unlikely that the old Harmonium survived after its time in the old school and was probably destroyed when the school buildings were pulled down. Could it have been rescued and become a cherished family heirloom?

Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL) Update from Countryside Properties Countryside Properties recently met with local residents and stakeholders at the Tangmere Village Fair and our community consultation event, which were both held in September, where we discussed the evolving Masterplan for the SDL and listened to feedback.

We continue to be grateful for the comments and suggestions from the local community, which are important in ensuring that the Masterplan delivers high quality homes and facilities for new and existing residents in Tangmere.

Countryside is continuing to progress details of the Masterplan, with a view to submitting the Masterplan to Chichester District Council for formal review later this year.

Little Stars is a family run group providing Rhyme and Sign sessions for under 5year olds in Pagham, North Mundham, Rose green and Tangmere.

They have a singing with signs session, followed by a fruit snack and drink for the little ones and a tea/ coffee and biscuits for accompanying adults. They have a wide selection of toys to play and explore with after.

“We have only been at Tangmere village Centre for 4 months but already feel settled in and have loved meeting everyone” says Laura who runs the Wednesday sessions at Tangmere with Emma.

“It’s a great way to meet new people, learn new songs and have a cup of tea and Laura and Emma there is plenty of free parking in the centres large car park and a little play park which lots of parents go to after.”

Sessions are pay as you go, £4 per family and run all year round.

Community Wardens

We hope that you have had a chance to enjoy some of the nicer weather we had during the summer months. The school holidays flew over so quickly and now the children are back at school, (I guess some people with children may disagree!), and there is already a faint smell of autumn in the air with the evenings turning cooler. We would like to wish good luck to all the children who are either going to school for the first time or who have moved up to high school.

We have spoken to a lot of you and you all seem to have embraced the change and are enjoying making new friends.

Tangmere historically has never caused us any extra problems during the school holidays and in fact the first newsletter piece after the children have gone back to school sees us commending the young people in the village on their excellent behaviour. Sadly this year the same cannot be said of some of our young people. There is a handful who thinks they can behave in any way they please, mostly when they are in a group. Reports we have received include foul language used regularly and aimed at any adult who dare challenge them. Riding their bicycles erratically and dangerously in the road and forming barricades in the road to prevent cars passing then being abusive when asked to move, this is both stupid and dangerous. Young people have also been spotted breaking into the various construction sites around the village and climbing on the construction vehicles which could be very dangerous if an accident occurs.

Please can we ask that you talk to your children about the dangers this could pose them.

The play area in Hangar Drive is receiving a lot of anti-social behaviour including having the shrubs uprooted and strewn around or used as missiles to throw at other children. The play area is often covered in litter from sweets and drinks.

At first there wasn’t a bin and now there are two that are constantly overflowing, but this is no excuse to drop litter as it could be taken home to put in the bin. We have contacted the estate management company about the bins needing emptying so in the meantime if you can encourage your children to take their rubbish home this would be a great help, it is 22

worth mentioning that littering is a crime and punishable by a fixed penalty notice.

We have been out and about and talking to the young members of the village about all of these issues. Some home visits have been made and others are being arranged. We always prefer to work with parents in a positive way and let them talk to their children about their behaviour with us reinforcing the message if needed: Sadly in some cases when the level of ASB is too serious or continuous by the same person/ persons the police are then involved.

We know a lot of people are using various Facebooks in Tangmere and we are told that a lot of issues are posted/ discussed on the sites. We have mentioned in previous newsletter articles that we have no access to these sites and would ask that if you would like us to help deal with the issues that upset/annoy you that you please contact us directly on: Dawn White 07768 210358 dwhite@chichester.gov.uk Gareth Jones 07768 202356 gjones@chichester.gov.uk Please include both of our email addresses so that if one of us is off duty you will still get a response.

In cases of anti social behaviour or other criminality you contact the police on either: The non emergency number 101, in an emergency 999 or the reporting page on their website which is easy to use, but please note that there is a 24 hour turnaround for a response. You can also report to Crimestoppers on: 0800 555111. We can’t stress how important it is that all incidents are reported to the police.

Recently a section 59 was issued to a moped rider who we had received various reports about, this came about as we worked closely with the witnesses ensuring incidents were reported to the police and us, the Community Wardens working in partnership with the Police.

Bosham based choir Harbour Voices is holding their annual concert in aid of local charity Dementia Support. Each year the choir supports a charity with one of their performances and each year they draw quite a crowd.

The group is conducted by Ben Lathbury, who’s incredible enthusiasm for singing and encouraging others to sing could rival Gareth Malone.

The choir sing a range of songs from the musicals such as Les Misérables and Oklahoma, to pop classics by ABBA and the Beatles.

Natalie Burchett, Community Fundraiser for Dementia Support, attended one of the choir’s practices: “The group were incredible; they sounded very professional but it was clear they also have great fun. The concert will be a wonderful evening and we are very grateful to Harbour Voices for holding this event for us.”

The concert for Dementia Support will be held at St Paul’s Church, Chichester, on Saturday 2nd November 2019, 7pm – 9pm.

The charity supports people living with dementia, and their families, in the West Sussex area. They have a support centre – Sage House, based in Tangmere.

Funds raised from the concert will go to Dementia Support’s Wayfinder Appeal to provide more vital dementia services and support in the community.
