This summer has passed so quickly and boy did we have some glorious hot weather, for some too hot. I’m sure my dogs were not alone in spending time in doors and not going for walks until the cooler evenings.

We arrived back from our holiday at the end of July to find the garden dry and wilting but it didn't take long for it to recover.

This has been the best summer since 1976 and whilst people may have wished for cooler weather, future summers may disappoint us.

As the village grows larger the need for distributors of the news increases and so we are always looking for volunteers to deliver issues in their area. If you are able to offer 20 minutes once every two months to walk around your neighbourhood then please get in touch by emailing the editor@tangmere-news.co.uk

www.crrc.co.uk Tangmere Military Aviation Museum The Museum is pleased to confirm that it has been awarded a grant under the LEADER Rural Development Programme operated by West Sussex County Council. This grant is given to support rural tourism and culture. The grant has been used to assist with the funding of audio visitor guides and the redesign of the Museum car park. The work on the car park has been undertaken during September and will finish mid October. An alternative parking area and access to the Museum has been signposted for the duration.

Twinning Association As usual the Twinning “everyone is a winner” tombola at the summer fair in September did really well and was supported well by members and residents. Our next activity will be a Quiz’n’fun supper evening at 6.30pm on Saturday 20th October at Tangmere House.

Wow… the summer fair in September was a great day for the café and the lunches went down well as well as the homemade cakes. Thank you to everyone who supported by helping on the day, making cakes and buying, without you the café would not work.

Our next event will be held on the evening of Halloween, Wednesday 31st October starting at 4:30pm, when we will open up in the Youth hall for hot chocolate and some sticky treats for our young trick-or-treaters, and soup and a roll for the accompanying adults. There is talk about prizes for the best costumes so keep an eye out for posters around the village and on the village facebook page.

The café will be serving lunches and tea at the winter fair from 12:30pm on the 24th November so come along with your friends and family and have some lunch, browse the fair for some Christmas gifts, decorations, crafts and try your hand at winning a food hamper.

Barnham Trojans u13 blue are now playing their home games at Tangmere field on Sunday morning with a kick off time of 10am.

On Armistice Day the village will be honouring the fallen from the First World War at the marking of the centenary of the end of the hostilities. There will be a special unveiling of statues at the Tangmere Museum on Sunday 11th November, please check for further details of the exact arrangements.

The parish Council is still looking to co-opt new members onto the council, to make up our full committee membership.

Autumn Countryside Show Celebrate the Abundance of the Harvest At the Weald & Downland Living Museum Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October 2017 This popular show features traditional working demonstrations, including heavy horses and vintage tractors ploughing, steampowered threshing, plus rural craft demonstrations, displays, competitions and stands with a countryside theme.

The Weald & Downland Living Museum is participating in the National Museums at Night event, with two evening promenades with fireside smuggling stories, plus a family-friendly tale trail.

On Friday 26 and Saturday 27 October, the Weald & Downland Living Museum will open its doors from 6.45pm for pre-booked visitors to experience its atmospheric Museum at Night guided story walks.

Museum at Night walks offer a truly out of the ordinary experience. You will be guided by lamplight to different spaces around the Museum, to hear a series of short night-time stories with a smuggling theme. Some will be amusing, some mysterious and some downright odd. Some are definitely not the stuff to ensure sweet dreams. Each story has a historical root, as truth is far stranger than fiction. At the end of the evening, gather around an open fire for a calming spiced Not for the under 16s or the faint of heart! Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. This year’s panto is the very traditional Cinderella but with an 80’s music twist and dedicated to Angus one of our young players who had a fatal accident during the summer.

Auditions have already taken place, the cast has been chosen and rehearsals are well under way. We have welcomed some new members to the group so the cast has taken on some new dynamics which should lend to a spectacular show. However, we still welcome new members of all ages especially those that can help backstage, painting scenery and making costumes.

We are a happy band of thespians who love to entertain our audience so please come and support us by buying loads of tickets for the pantomime on the 7th and 8th December. There is a matinee on the Saturday so please bring your little ones. It’s a great way of giving them a theatre experience without the huge cost or travel and if they fidget or want to join in with the singing and dancing that’s ok as it’s all the fun of Panto. So come and see if Buttons is going to give up on the lovely Cinderella who wants to dance with somebody or if her two ugly stepsisters who just want to have fun get their way.

Will Prince Charming’s wish come true, will he find his real princess and see if it rains men on the Baroness.

For the October meeting of Tangmere Flower Club (Friday 12th, 7.30-9.30pm at Tangmere Village Centre), we are delighted to welcome Gillian Sadler as our demonstrator, who will be using the theme of 'Sussex Life' as her inspiration. Gillian is an experienced demonstrator but this will be her first visit to the club and we're excited for the treat we have in-store from her 'sensory' demonstrations!

October competition theme: The Wizard of Oz. Our November meeting on Friday 9th will see us immersed into the fragrant world of perfume with a talk by Albert Powell of Roja Parfums on 'The Art of Floral Perfume'.

We would love to welcome new members to our small and friendly club, so come along and see what we are up to! You'll be rewarded with a fun evening, including a raffle and a tea & biscuit break!

Visitors £4, members £32 (per annum). Competitions are open to members only, and membership includes 10% discount at Forge Flowers in Halnaker and on floristry workshops at Seed2Design in Ashington.

Flower Club

Little Gems are a small family run business based in Tangmere, who pride themselves in giving a friendly, reliable and professional service. They have a range of themed Bouncy Castles which are displayed on their website as well as candy floss machines for hire too. Great for any Special Occasion, Birthday Parties, Christenings, Baby Showers, Proms, Corporate Events, Fun Days, and Fetes, as many of our residents found out when they were hired by Tangmere Parish Council for the summer fair in September. A number of children’s parties held at the village centre have hosted a bouncy castle from Little Gems as they are aware of what fits in the hall.

“We have built our business through repeat bookings and brilliant recommendations from our customers and continue to do so.” says Gemma “For your peace of mind we have full Public Liability Insurance for all our equipment.”

They will give a 10% discount for any school, nursery, playgroup or charity event and are always adding to their equipment available. New this year is a Rodeo Bull, Soft Play Inflatable slide. Check out their VIP lounge, just what’s needed for a birthday party in the garden.

Comments from your District and County Councillor CDC at its 4th Sept Cabinet meeting appointed Countryside Properties (UK) Ltd as its Development Partner to take forward the Tangmere Strategic Development Location (SDL). Work will now start on the Masterplan and continue on the Compulsory Purchase Order, all heading toward a planned Dec 2021start on site.

Efforts are continuing to get the Dukes Meadow and Bader Heights play areas completed.

Both sites are well beyond the trigger points in their planning permissions for these to be brought into use and this does not endear the development industry to residents and Councils.

On 11 Sept Southern Water got planning permission from WSCC for its Strategic Sewage Pipeline intended to serve the W of Chichester, Westhampnett, Tangmere and Shopwyke SDLs. The pumping station S of the Museum is sat on top of a number of surface water culverts which will need protecting.

The pipeline’s route along the W and S sides of the Tangmere SDL will affect the landscape buffer required in the Neighbourhood Plan.

It took getting local Southern Water managers (on 21 Aug) to lift the covers and fully inhale the odours emanating from the inlet chambers to the Churchwood Drive pumping station to get a plan of action out of them.

They’ve undertaken to fit filters in the accesses to these chambers, but as they need to be made to measure it maybe towards the end

of the year before they are fitted. In the meantime work will continue on identifying the source of the odours which are unique to this location.

Op Watershed projects progress. The new soakaways for Garland Square are in and Hyde Group are to reline an existing pipe to complete the job. Investigation works have taken place for the new Cheshire Crescent soakaway - a design proposal is awaited.

Portsmouth Water is scheduled to remove its pipe from the Marsh Lane culvert in late Sept and, as part of its mains renewal programme, is replacing the main along Malcolm Rd and Cheshire Crescent.

The heavy rain on 10 and 26 Aug showed what will increasingly happen with climate change – more frequent and intense downpours. We need to restore and improve ditches, soakaways and water bodies so that they can absorb these events, avoid road drains silting/backing up and prevent groundwater levels rising. Dumping litter and waste into them doesn’t help!

The occupation, for a week in the summer holidays, of the Recreation Field brought home to Tangmere the growing issue of illegal incursions onto private and public land and the waste left behind. The frequency of these events will increase as the population involved in this activity expands. The Westhampnett Transit site is now almost always full. Pressure is being applied to get Law and Police operational changes, but success is uncertain. Landowners will need to put in more robust structures if they wish to protect their fields.

Know your village…… A series of facts about our village compiled by the Tangmere Local History Group.

These are fantastic new developments, which have greatly enhanced our small village which is in a beautiful rural location, and allowing new families to enjoy two, three, four and five bedroom homes each set in great surroundings with easy access to the South Downs National park. Leave the car at home and explore the local area by foot or bicycle, using traffic free bridle ways and foot paths over open spaces with views of the down land towards Trundle hill. Make a visit to the village shops and join in the many and varied community events on the village recreation grounds: you’ll help to keep our neighborhood vibrant and prosperous. Every place has its own personality, and once you move in you’ll soon find your favorite walks, and the shops you like best. The village is handily placed to take advantage of the nearby bustling cathedral city of Chichester and wider West Sussex with its areas of outstanding natural beauty, acres of green countryside, miles of fabulous coastline and some of the finest walking in the country.

Neville Duke Way: Squadron Leader Neville Frederick Duke DSO, OBE, DFC**, AFC, FRAeS Known as the Flying Duke Neville was acknowledged as one of the world's foremost test pilots. In 1953, he became holder of the world air speed record when he flew a Hawker Hunter at 727.63 mph (1,171.01 km/h) over Littlehampton. He became a well-known celebrity in the Coronation year of Queen Elizabeth II, and became one of the vice presidents of the Eagle Club, formed by the Eagle magazine, in 1950. All schoolboys from that era came to know of Duke as "Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future". He was honorary president of Tangmere Military Aviation Museum, where his record-breaking Hunter is displayed. Make a special effort to visit the museum, which has special displays showing Neville’s memories and achievements.

Wyvern Close: Westland Wyvern The Westland Wyvern was a British single-seat carrierbased strike aircraft seeing active service in the 1956 Suez Crisis. A large and very noisy turboprop engine driving large and distinctive contra-rotating propellers powered Wyverns. This plane often suffered loss of power on launch from ships with steam driven catapult; several were lost off HMS Albion’s bows. A total of 127 planes were built, 39 were lost, and 13 pilots killed during its 5 years’ service. A single survivor is on display at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton.

Our role is to be a link between the community, the District Council and other partners including Sussex Police. We respond to issues of low-level antisocial behaviour and provide a reassuring presence to residents.

Community Wardens act as referral agents, reporting incidents to appropriate agencies and ensuring that they are dealt with as swiftly as possible.

The main focus of the role is to:  Assist with environmental improvements, such as reporting litter, graffiti, fly tipping, dog fouling, faulty street lights and hous ing management.  Contribute to community development and cohesion by attending and supporting constructive activities for young people (e.g. schools and youth clubs) a working with the elderly and vulnerable.  Provide a link between local residents, businesses, key agencies and service providers such as Housing Associations, landowners, Councils.  Help with referrals to agencies such as debt counselling, Food Banks, back to work schemes.  Support other services working with families by providing welfare visits and follow-up support. Much of this work is done in confidence.

Community Wardens are non-confrontational and have NO enforcement powers as it is believed that such a move would hinder us with regards to the community development aspect of our work. As employees of Chichester District Council, CWs are not an Emergency Service and do not provide 24hr cover. That said, CWs are still available to patrol areas where we have a spike in incidents. Patrolling can only be a deterrent in the short term, as it is generally the knowledge that CWs have of their communities that could assist in identifying perpetrators so that action may be taken. They are not a replacement for Police, and any criminal activity must be reported to the Police.

Residents can contact us directly, we are very approachable and we will help you wherever possible – if we can’t we will signpost you to those that can. If in doubt, give us a call!

When you’re in the supermarket about to do a shop, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you not only complete your shopping successfully, with some savings, but avoid the potential for waste. Buying bulk is often encouraged for those who want to save, but this often means that much of the purchase does go to waste – after all, there’s only so much you can use at a time! Avoid the pitfalls of waste and take a look at these ideas for how you can save on your next shopping trip, without giving in to the stockpiling urge.

Shop with a sense of purpose A successful shopping trip starts the moment you get in the door. Having a shopping list is super helpful, and there is good evidence to suggest you will buy more than you need if you go in to the store feeling hungry! Having a meal first and a list in hand will mean that you don’t get too distracted by an extra pack of doughnuts that you don’t need, or those perfectly-placed impulse items on your way to the check out.

If you can’t find your paper list, try an app like “Out of Milk” to keep you on track.

Purchase own-brand items Sometimes ownbrand items look less flashy on the shelves.

Pick up loose items, instead of pre-packaged or pre-cut There’s a very good reason that convenient, pre-cut and pre-packaged items cost a little more: someone (or something) had to prep them and package them for your

Don’t be fooled by Buy One Get One Free BOGOF deals are always marked out in flashy, brightly coloured tabs on the shelves.

Check the price per kg or ml, and make sure you are getting actual good value for money.

After all, if you aren’t likely to use the extra, this isn’t much of a saving! Be realistic about how much you can use at once.

Look for better deals online If you search online before you hit the supermarket, you can always find great offers from grocery store chains, particularly if you are a firsttime online shopper. Student Money Saver has a great guide to couponing, if you’re looking for more ways to slice extra pounds from the final purchase price. Take advantage of the coupons and cost-cutting offers of your favourite grocery store chain.

Be loyal Loyalty cards can often help augment your purchasing power on single items.

But use these carefully – sometimes, competing grocery stores will offer cheaper prices that outweigh the benefits of building up points. Don’t get too obsessed with pointshoarding! Keep an eye out across a few grocery stores to make the best use of points deals as they come up.

With just a few simple strategies, you too can save without cramming your cupboard full of extras. Be sceptical of bulk deals, as waste negates your potential savings. Shop smart and you too can save on your next outing to the supermarket!

Hello Rev. Trevor, Welcome to our village and our neighbour at Oving. You have been appointed our next parish priest. We welcome you informally and more formally at your Licensing at Oving-Wednesday 10 October 7.30pm – everyone welcome. The people of Pagham say you are an OK guy and we look forward to finding this out for ourselves. You’re working in nursing part time we gather and not to disturb you on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when you’ve done nights!

We hope you’ll like both our villages- they are very different and pleasing us both won’t be easy! You may need to knock our heads together occasionally and remind us we are all God’s children whom Jesus commanded to love one another.

There are times when heaven comes down and fills us with awe and wonder when we worship in church. But there are the off days too when the weariness of the world overwhelms us and we just keep praying because it’s the only thing to do.

You’ve missed Harvest and the Battle of Britain but Christmas is not that far away!

Trevor currently works as a Night Support Worker in a residential home in Yapton. Previously, he worked as an engineer and management consultant in telecoms and financial services. Trevor trained part-time at SEITE and was curate at St Wilfrid’s, Bognor before going to Pagham. He is married to Lindsey and has two grown up children, Ellie and Henry. Trevor likes to build and ride old racing bicycles from the days when he was young and fit.

Lots has been happening over the hot summer months. We held our annual open afternoon which raised over ÂŁ200 for the gardens funds. We have plenty of cakes to go round which were made by the members. Fresh cream cakes through to gluten free so something to suit all visitors and members! There was a Tombola and colouring and runner bean planting for the children. Thank you to all that attended and for your kind donations. We would like to say a Big Welcome to Sally to join the garden on the open afternoon.

Our second fund raiser was the Sausage Sizzle at Homebase. Thank you to all the team that took part with all the cooking and serving up the Hot Dogs. It was a successful day and good fun and hopefully we will do this again next year.

The garden has provided us which so much produce over the last few months, I think will all have very full freezers and pots of preserves. Although the summer is coming to its end there is still plenty to do and produce still to have.

Allotment update The allotments now have smart new fencing around the perimeter and this should help prevent dogs running lose through growing plots. Plots have been very productive and there is a full harvest proceeding with onions, courgettes, lots of different varieties of beans, peas, cucumbers, beetroot, many different cabbages, carrots all being picked. We have a communal plot and growing house with a large communal compost bin area. This area is used for social events. With the coming year there may be a plot or two becoming vacant and anyone interested in finding out more should contact our Parish Clerk, clerk@tangmere-online.co.uk

Tangmere Tuesday Club We are a lively group who meet at the Village Centre every Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm for a chat and a cup of tea. We enjoy playing cards, scrabble, bingo, beetle and often go on outings.

Recipe for low carb supper: Dice one or two courgettes (depending on size) into1 inch square approx.. Fry in olive oil and turn until browned. In the meantime softly Poach an egg. When the courgettes are done, place on a warmed plate and put the egg on the top.

Tip: Tomatoes and/or mushrooms can be added to the courgettes if you wish.

Now we write only every 2 months, for some reason, the time seems to go past faster. One minute we’re talking about Summer and the next thinking about all the Autumn and Winter activities. Which brings me to the first one: Halloween, I believe there will be some activities based at the Village Centre like refreshments and fancy dress. Halloween traditionally goes off in the village in really good spirits and no trouble. However, if you prefer to keep your door shut and not to be bothered by the trick and treaters I have some flyers and posters that can be put on your door, just give me a ring. Following close on Halloween comes Guy Fawkes and Bonfire night, also not usually a problem as most people seem to prefer to go to an organized event somewhere in the district, but please remember your pets as this can be quite traumatic for some of them.

Neighbourhood Watch

We had some challenges through the summer, with car crime and also the ongoing parking issues, also the insurgence of Travellers on the Rec. These are the same issues that are happening everywhere in the district, in fact everywhere in the country. I can only urge you to report anything that you know is wrong or antisocial to the police on 101 or online (much quicker) and car related issues to www.operationcrackdown. I get the impression that the police are beginning to admit that things are getting worse and we will hopefully see some changes in neighbourhood policing before too long.

Hamish McNaughton was our speaker in September, and gave a fascinating talk on the history of bell-ringing in this country, and an insight into the skills needed to ring a peal of bells. He talked in particular about Chichester Cathedral bell tower, where some of the bells are over 500 years old.

Our next meeting takes place on Thursday 11th October, when Caroline Adams will be talking to us about Elizabethan Chichester.

Tangmere Local History Group offers a programme of speakers and outings on subjects of historical interest, particularly in Tangmere and Chichester, but also further afield. Visitors are always very welcome to our meetings.

Meetings are held at Tangmere Medical Centre, starting at 7.30pm.
