We have been so blessed with the dry sunny weather this past summer which enabled many residents to enjoy their outdoor living spaces. Some have increased the number of shrubs and hanging baskets adding splashes of colour and shape to the frontage of their homes, which is evident while walking around the village. Others have adapted these areas for their family to sit allowing them to share a moment or watch the world go by.

With all of this occurring in front gardens, it only leaves to ones imagination what has been achieved to the areas out of public view. If you have a space that you have worked on during lockdown and would like to share it with others then please send us a picture for the next issue.

There has been some interest in the “netted ball� structure pictured on the front cover, but little seems to be known by the editorial team of the Tangmere News other than where it is, so if any resident has some information about it please email. editor@tangmere-news.co.uk .

You may have seen the post on the village Facebook page regarding the rock snake, which was assembled during lockdown, being made into a permanent memorial feature for Covid 19. At the moment the rock snake can be found on the corner of City Fields Way and Neville Dukes Way. The Parish Council was approached and it was suggested that it could be set in concreate, but where in the village? If you have any thoughts on the matter or would like to add your rock to the snake why not go and visit it and then get back to the editorial team with ideas. I am currently working towards restarting our TaiChiFit classes shortly.

Safety of all participants is paramount, therefore I shall be adhering strictly to all Covid guidelines issued by the UK Government, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and Public Health England, along with any additional requirements Imposed by the management team at Tangmere Village Centre.

As our numbers will be restricted I am introducing a booking system (at least initially). The core times for classes will still be Tuesdays 3.30 and Fridays 10.30, however depending on numbers it may be necessary to run an overflow class.

Dog Warden Service changes Following a recent service review of the Environmental Protection Team there have been imminent changes to the way that CDC provides our dog related services: Over the past few years the way in which stray dogs have been reunited with their owners has changed. Social media platforms provide a readily accessible service by which many stray dogs are reunited with their owners in a simple cost effective way.

This trend has seen a significant drop in the numbers of strays that pass through CDC’s care. As such the decision was taken to embed what is currently the ‘dog warden’ role into more generic roles within the team.

All councils are obliged in law to provide a reception point for stray dogs. CDC’s has a contract with Amberley Kennels that meets that duty. CDC will still maintain a van suitable for carrying stray dogs and have staff trained who are ready and able to pickup and carry dogs to the kennels. When the dog is reunited with its owner then they are then charged for their dogs stay at the kennels and for officer time.

Dog on human attacks will remain in the Police’s domain and CDC will continue to deal with dog on dog attacks. Our other animal licensing functions such as licensing dog breeders, dog day care and kennels remain unaffected by the change.

Given the above our long-serving dog warden, John Rosser, retired as of 30 September. We know how popular John is and that he will be missed by us and many others but of course we wish him well in his long earned retirement.

CDC is currently working up a protocol to provide parishes with more detail on the new arrangements which they will share in the near future. In any case the service continues but will be provided differently to previously. What does it mean to become a Green Dog Walker?

Green Dog Walkers® sign a pledge to:  always clean up after their dog;  dispose of the bag responsibly;  carry extra dog waste bags;  gladly give a bag to those without one; and  be a friendly reminder to other dog walkers to clean up after their dogs.

In return, they receive an enamel Green Dog Walkers® badges to display on their coat or dog lead, a car window sticker and a leaflet about the campaign.

Green Dog Walkers® are role models for responsible dog ownership. As well as ensuring that they clean up after their dogs, they:  ensure their dog is microchipped;  keep their dog under control at all times; and,  stay safe around farm animals and ground nesting birds.

Community Wardens

As we look forward to our “new� normal, it is important to remember what the community achieved during the initial stages of the pandemic. People came together, petty differences were put aside so that the ones in the area that needed help received it. *ASB dropped to basically nothing and I only had to speak to a handful of people about breaking the lockdown rules.

But, as we have started to come out of the lockdown ASB has crept up, particularly in the area around the skate park, broken bottles, alcohol litter and general litter have massively increased, we have been and spoken to some individuals about this but I would like you, parents of our youngsters to also have a word and remind the youngsters how to behave.

This is not a one off, it has happened several times in the last few weeks. If you see this kind of behaviour then please report to Sussex police on 101 or via their website.

As the news has reported in recent days, the spike in cases of Covid 19 may have been caused by young people meeting it is really important to stress that we still need to follow social distancing and continue with the use of face coverings in shops and businesses, the last thing we need is another lockdown. Compared to other places around the country we were quite lucky but with winter coming we need to be extra cautious. *Anti-social behaviour

Chairman’s Report

With Covid19 regulations changing every day, it would seem prudent not to plan any events in the near future!

The date for the Village Day fair was set in February, confirmed in July and finally cancelled in September. The re-opening of the village centre was planned for the start of September, and almost at once the rules of the numbers of people allowed to meet were reduced to the rule of 6. However, as the village centre has put in place arrangements that make the venue Covid19 secure, the numbers allowed to attend events has not been affected.

However, the decision has been made that we cannot take any bookings for private parties until regulations are relaxed, as the fundamental reason for the new regulations was to reduce social interaction.

Our user groups who meet regularly have been invited to plan their return, and already some groups have started to meet up again.

Many residents have expressed concern regarding the testing site that appeared on the airfield just behind Hanger Drive. For the record, the Parish Council was not given an opportunity to object to the site being established, but was informed 2 days before it was built.

What seems most disappointing is the fact that such a facility is not being used to any significant degree. However, when the site does gear up to capacity, traffic and pollution issues will be monitored to check that local residents are not unduly affected.

The Speed Indicator Devices (SID’s) have been moved between their locations around the village on a regular basis, and from my observations they have made an impact on the speed of traffic in the village. The only exception to that comment is in the late evening, when cars do appear to be travelling faster. Traffic in the evening is not always through traffic, so some of the faster vehicle movements are being made by Tangmere residents themselves.

The soil bund built around the recreation field has proven to be more of a problem than originally anticipated. The very hot weather this summer has prevented the mixed seed from germinating, and without the growth cover, people walking across the bund have been damaging the composition of the soil. However, with the first signs of a return of rainfall, a further seeding will take place that will resolve the problem.

The Weald and Downland museum is now open but entry is by pre-booked, timed tickets only, which can be purchased online through their website https:// www.wealddown.co.uk/ . The museum cafe is open for takeaway service only, between 10.30am-5pm and their ‘People’s Show‘ exhibition has been extended.

The Arts Society Boxgrove has not been able to provide its usual scintillating lectures in Boxgrove Village Hall over the last few months, however, this autumn our lectures will be presented on Zoom. The Head Office of The Arts Society is also providing Members with an autumn programme of fascinating lectures as well as regular email contact with interesting information. Some of our Members are not familiar with Zoom or do not have computers so we are encouraging them to join family members or friends who are familiar with the technology and make it a social occasion, always keeping to the rule of six!

Where possible we are also planning some visits to places of interest within easy driving distance.

With winter evening drawing in and limited social contact we all need some stimulating entertainment. We are inviting you to join us and become Members and look forward to a variety of entertaining lectures.

Tangmere Flower Club The Village Centre reopened in September with Covid 19 Risk Assessments and Procedures in place.

Message from Practice Manager Joanna Reiss We have finally had our first delivery of flu vaccines for patients over the age of 65. The delivery dates were all changed at the last minute and the first delivery was earlier than expected. A text message has been sent to all patients over the age of 65. For those who do not have the correct mobile phone number recorded, we are beginning to telephone them. We have clinics set up and are asking that patients arrive on time and make sure that they can easily roll up their sleeve or remove their jacket. If anyone has an appointment booked, the doctor or nurse can give a flu jab at the same time. We will keep our website updated with the dates of flu clinics.

We continue to maintain our high standards of infection control. The clinicians all wear PPE when seeing their patients and we do ask that patients come into the surgery wearing a mask. Where possible we are still doing as much as possible by phone or by video consultation.

We are encouraging patients to complete an econsultation form which can be found on our website. This means that's the doctor has as much information as possible before they speak to the patient. Forms are also available on line for patients who need pill checks, asthma checks and medication reviews.

Sadly we continue to have patients who do not attend their appointments, often for smears and diabetic reviews, wasting half an hour of the nurse's time. We do ask that patients tell us that they cannot attend so that the appointment can be used by someone else.

As the weather starts to get colder we will be opening the doors for patients who need to collect their medication. Please ring the buzzer and dispensary will answer the intercom.

Surgery Hours Morning surgery runs from 08:30 to 12:00 each day, afternoon surgery from 14:00 to 18:00.

On Wednesday and Thursday evening there is a further surgery between 18:30 and 19:30. These appointments are intended for those patients who find our normal opening hours difficult due to work commitments etc.

Walks As soon as lockdown permits we will resume our group walks.

* * * * After a discussion last night with most of the members it was decided that, due to Covid 19, the pantomime "Aladdin" would not be performed in our usual December slot but hopes to be back at the end of January Friday 29th and twice on Saturday 30th and then again the following weekend on Friday 6th and evening only on 7th February. Fingers crossed that Covid 19 does not cancel our new production dates. We will keep everybody informed of our progress.

Twinning Association

Tangmere Twinning Association dates back to 1992 and aims to foster social, cultural and educational links with Hermanville-sur-Mer, a village on the Normandy coast close to Ouistreham where the Portsmouth/Caen ferry docks. In 1993 charter signing ceremonies were held in Tangmere and Hermanville, and our charter may be seen in the Village Centre.

The two villages have much in common, in particular their connections with the Second World War. The magnificent expanses of sandy beach and sea front at Hermanville-la-Brèche played a vital part in the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, forming part of Sword Beach.

We arrange trips where members can stay in each other’s homes and enjoy hospitality and learn more about our respective cultures. These trips are great fun, and do not depend on being able to speak French fluently-a little Franglais and some creative sign language go a long way! Many of us have made close friends through the Association and pay regular visits to see each other.

The Association has an active social programme, and this has enabled local people with a French interest to get to know each other. We welcome new members at any time. Please contact Alison Coote (773276) or Matt Deeble (697436) if you would like more information.

Countryside Properties would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to share their feedback with us over the past two years. The comments we have received have been important in shaping both the Framework Masterplan, which was endorsed by Chichester District Council earlier this year, and the subsequent outline planning application.

We are in the process of finalising our plans and preparing to submit an outline planning application to the Council, which will then undertake its own consultation before making a decision on the application.

How to Save a Life Telling people I am a therapist is similar to when I would tell people I was a teacher except instead of telling me about their favourite teacher when they were at school they now tell me their facts and opinions about mental health. In conversation last weekend at a, socially distanced, live music (I know….live!!) festival in aid of Combat Stress mental health charity, I was asked whether I knew that there was a connection between big sporting events and the male suicide rate. This fellow Bootcamper told me that there had been studies that showed that the suicide rate, particularly amongst men, dropped during a big sporting event such as the World Cup or the Euro cup.

I hadn’t known this, but it made sense to me. Even if the rest of the year some of us hide away in a “no sports” bubble, many of us will cheer on our own country in a big event. For the men that really love competition, sports and that feeling of occasion then what these events offer is a time when they can call up their mate and ask if they are going to watch the game, they can ask them to come over, they can prevent themselves from being alone without needing to say out loud that they need someone there. Since the weekend I have done a little research and it seems that there really is small but significant reduction in suicides completed by men during big sports event, especially in the country that is hosting it. One reason for this could be to do with the fact that once our basic needs such as food and water are met, the next thing we most need to survive well is connection, relationships with others. For men this can be tricky. Therapists report that their male clients will tell them that they can’t tell their friends their worries as their friends would make a joke of it, for others they think they would be seen as less of a man and for others they feel that they can’t add to the burden that other people are carrying as they are the strong one, who is expected to carry others.

I hear you ask what my point is here and why I have focused on men when women After have these issues and feelings too. September 10th was National Suicide Prevention Before Day and this year the suicide rates amongst men was the highest it had been for two decades. Amidst Covid-19 worries, the stress of work, money and the feeling of isolation more men are ending their lives. When you see your dad, husband, brother, boyfriend, friend and ask if they’re alright, listen hard, let them know that it’s OK to not be OK and that there is always someone to talk to who will listen. With this in mind, Covid permitting, I am setting up a Wellbeing café at the Village Centre once a month to give people the chance to come and sit with a cuppa and chat to others and make those all-important connections. The first one is hopefully on September 24th. Everyone is welcome.

Remembering Autumn is almost upon us.

As I look around the churchyard, I see signs that the plants are turning from their summer glory into the natural decline into autumn. I look at those plants that are turning and remember their past glory, the days when they were full of colour, the days when we could see growth.

In the church calendar, autumn is the season for remembering those who have gone before us. Each year in Tangmere, we remember those who died in the Battle of Britain, some of whom are buried in the churchyard. There are men British, Canadian, South African and New Zealanders, as well as Germans buried in the churchyard. We remember that young men from all over the world died during that phase of the Second World War, friend and foe alike.

We also remember those who have died in all conflicts around the world when we hold our Remembrance Day service in November. Originally as an act of remembrance for those who died in the First World War, we now remember everyone who had died while on active service in any conflict since the WW1. It is sometimes easy to forget that there are veterans of many different conflicts who lost comrades during fighting in conflicts that we may have never heard of. It is those we remember, alongside those who died in and around RAF Tangmere.

And of course we remember all of those men and women who served at RAF Tangmere. It is the 50th anniversary of the base closing this year. Many of those who served at RAF Tangmere are buried in the churchyard of St Andrew’s. Some

died in flying accidents, some were serving on the base when they died and others chose to be buried there after long and fruitful lives away from Tangmere.

And not to forget the residents of Tangmere who are buried in the churchyard or whose ashes are interred there. I have met many visitors to the churchyard who are visiting the grave or memorial of a loved one and they often say how nice it is to have somewhere to come and remember their loved ones.

Inside the church, there is a memorial book where we remember many of those people who are dear to the people of Tangmere. It has been a long time since it was updated, so one of our projects this year is to update the book. If you have a loved on who you would like to have remembered in the memorial book, please let us know and we will let you have details of how you can have them included in the book.

We hope to see you at one of the upcoming services. Be prepared for them to be outside if the numbers are too large due to social distancing requirements.

Birds and Bats

Many thanks to all who responded with information on Bird and Bat life in Tangmere. The response has been excellent.

Thrushes and Bats have been sighted every night in Hanger Drive. Long Tailed Tits and a Sparrow Hawk which takes out Collared Doves is seen in Meadow Way. Long Tailed Tits are also seen in Hawker Close together with Siskins, Black Caps, Bats and a Sparrow Hawk which goes for Gold Finches. The Violet Turaco used to be seen and fed on a regular basis in Nicholson Close some 2 years ago but has not been seen for a couple of years. However, it is now seen regularly in East Hampnett Lane and Hawker Close.

An entry from Tamar Way reports a pair of Swifts nesting every year in the eaves as well as viewing various Warblers which are difficult to identify. Less welcome are Carrion Crows plus their young that come with white bread and dunk it in the birdbath! There is also a noisy rookery at nearby Tangmere Road. Although reduced numbers of Swifts, House Martins and Swallows have been seen a normal number of Red Kite, Buzzard, Herring Gull, Peregrine have been sighted. Occasionally a single Heron has been seen and more rarely Swans in formation have been sighted. In early May a Cuckoo was heard !!

From Wyvern Close I have seen Crows (noisy ones) which nest in Lysander Way, and no Skylarks again this year. Sadly no Parrots mentioned. But see the Video above!!!

Thank you for all your comments, David Blythe Well, what’s changed since the last report? The children are back at school and some people have been able to get back to work, so maybe life is seeming a little more like normal, the village seems quieter now. However we have the Test and Trace Centre on the airfield and it is too early to judge how this will impact on our village life. There are positives and negatives and it has to be somewhere, but I expect everyone will have their opinion. I, for one broadly welcome it, but worry about the lack of toilet facilities for unwell people who may have travelled long distances to get to Tangmere. If anyone has concerns about the T & T Centre, please address them to our County Councillor.

Our Community Wardens, the PCSO and the Police should all be responding to crime and issues that arise in the village, please don’t be afraid to report anything of concern, their job ‘to keep us safe’ has not changed. Do not be afraid to use any of the emergency services during this uncertain time.

Tangmere WI The Tangmere sWIfts were delighted to meet at the beginning of September, after a gap of 6 months. In order to comply with the social distancing regulations we used the large hall, which gave us plenty of room to spread out. We all felt very comfortable in the “Covid safe “ Village Centre. It was a very informal meeting , with no speaker, just giving the ladies an oppor-

tunity to have a good old natter and catch up over a cuppa. We shared experiences and exciting events that had happened during over the last few months, including an engagement. If you would like more information about your local WI then please email tangmerewi@gmail.com

Orchard update

The orchard has now been planted for 10 years which means the vine over the pergola was put in about a year later. So, for nine years we have been trying to persuade it to go over the top of the pergola and finally this year it has produced lovely bunches of grapes hanging down from the growth over the wires. It is, it seems, a constant task to prune away the lower growth so that all its energy goes into producing those grapes. In previous years the wind seems to have prevented it from growing strongly over the top and clinging on to those wires. It doesn’t help that every time I see new growth that needs tying in it requires a pair of step ladders and a reluctant husband to complete the job. Still, the grapes look amazing now and we look forward to harvesting them. But then, that’s the trouble with fruit; birds, wasps and people usually get there first. Jayne 22

Positive Routes was set up at the beginning of 2019. The plan was to settle in and run some Relax Kids community classes in Tangmere, which went very well with the children who attended enjoying the time and space to explore their emotions. We ran a mental health conference with guest speakers to raise awareness of the need to discuss our wellbeing and to give wellbeing companies a chance to offer their support.

In the background we were preparing ourselves to set up a bigger project – to form something that can enable everyone to have access to support for their mental health according to what they feel they actually need. The first parts of that project are underway. We have begun the accessible counselling agency that offers therapy for £10 a session or for free, if money is what would prevent you from getting the help that you feel that you need. We have started working in partnership with Sussex Clubs for young People to offer emotional support when a young person asks for help, with Chichester Forest Schools as Therapy Support during their Wellbeing sessions and with The Awareness Key as therapy support during their Mental Health Strengthening training courses. We will also be starting up a monthly Wellbeing Café at the Tangmere Village Centre to give the community a space where discussion of our mental health and wellbeing is welcome and advise or support can be signposted.

As we find out how the world is going to change next it may help to have this space to talk to others and understand that you are not the only one that feels like that. It will, of course, follow Covid-19 protocol, so we will keep you safe whilst you chat to others about what you need and what would help you to feel mentally healthier.

Chichester Camera Club has its home at Tangmere Village Centre but has been unable to meet since March due to Covid 19, with Club activities transferred to Zoom. Club stalwart and Tangmere resident, Lorna Brown, has documented Tangmere in lockdown, including this lovely photo of Gloria who has been organising food deliveries in the village over the past months.
