WEST HOVE
WELCOME TO THE WEST Contents... HOVE DIRECTORY! Our July issue features an interview with one of the new councillors for Westbourne ward, Chris Henry, who tells us what he hopes to achieve in the area. We have an article on the Battle of Britain from local historian Rachel Bridgeman and Cllr Robert Nemeth tells us how honey bees are thriving in West Hove. If you’re looking for places to go at the weekends, we have plenty of suggestions, including Paddle Round the Pier (6-7 July), WishFest and an a cappella concert at St Leonard’s Church (13 July), and the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail (27-28 July). 3 We didn’t quite get the weather most of us wanted in June... Here’s to a sunny July! The West Hove Directory Team

An interview with one of the new councillors for Westbourne ward...
WEST HOVE
MEET WESTBOURNE COUNCILLOR CHRIS HENRY... Chris Henry was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Westbourne. Do you live in West Hove? Tell us about your background... I’ve lived in Hove for 25 years and came to the City to teach English GCSE in Portslade. I still live and work in Hove, only now I work for Peter Kyle, our MP. What made you want to become a councillor?
5
I’ve been active in our community for 10 years, particularly campaigning for changes in the private rented sector, such as abolishing agency fees and clamping down on rogue landlords. Working for Peter Kyle means that I’ve become even more involved in helping people solve their problems and I wanted to continue this work as a councillor. Now I hope I can offer residents a powerful package of councillor and MP so that we can all achieve some great things together.
PREMIER WINDOWS
Doors and Conservatories
What do you hope to achieve in the Westbourne area? I’m extremely keen to ensure that the West Hove seafront is shown some love and I would be so happy if I could play a part in making it more family friendly. Our area has lost two play facilities recently and I think the West Hove seafront could play a part in replacing them so that our children have plenty to do and can keep fit and have fun. I would also like to play a part in increasing recycling and tackling the problem of single-use plastics. There is a real desire from people to do more in this area and I want the council to help enable people to achieve this better. Finally, I’d like to ensure that the friendly, local feel to the Westbourne neighbourhood is protected. Turning houses into flats, AirBnB, party houses and bad landlords will all potentially impact our beautiful area for the worse if we’re not careful. What are your interests outside politics?

Politics is very demanding and has taken over my life! However, we’re lucky to live in a City with the sea to the south and the South Downs National Park to the north so when I’m not at work I’m usually found in one of those places. How can we contact you? I’m easy to contact at Christopher.henry@brighton-hove. gov.uk or 07395 282745.

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...
NEVER WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW... (British Prime Minister Winston Churchill on 20 August 1940) © IWM (HU 54418)
From 10 July to 31 October 1940, local school children were first-hand witnesses of history in the making as the Battle of Britain took place in the skies above Hove. In July 1940, Hitler had ordered his armed forces to prepare for Operation Sealion - the invasion of Britain - and his generals and some 100,000 troops were poised on the north coast of France just waiting for the green light to go ahead. However, in order for the invasion to proceed, the German Luftwaffe had to first destroy the RAF and dominate the skies of southern England.
11
For 112 days, the conflict raged in the skies over the south coast; its inhabitants eyewitness to dog-fights, as the ‘Few’ struck back at the Luftwaffe who were attempting to clear
the way for the invading forces. Today it’s hard to imagine how close to the battle people came.

Local news...
CENTENARY WINDOW UNVEILED AT ST PETER’S CHURCH... A beautiful new stained glass window was unveiled at St Peter’s Catholic Church in Portland Road on 1st June at a special mass in front of a packed congregation. The stained glass rose window was commissioned in 2015 to celebrate the centenary of the church and replaces a plain window above the main entrance of the Grade II listed building in Tamworth 13 Road. Parishioners raised money for the window with donations and activities such as mud runs and tabletop sales. The unveiling service was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Brighton & Hove, Alan Robins, and led by Father Jerry O’Brien, who retired from St Peter’s in 2018. Father Jerry told the congregation that the parish had chosen the design of Peter and Andrew, based on the Bible story of the miraculous catch of fish, which was a very powerful message not to lose hope. The window was designed by Debbie Burgess. Debbie said: “The 100 fish swirling around the edge represent the centenary of the church - hopefully all recognisable fish: plaice, cod, sardines and bream amongst them. There are also three fish in the net including the haddock which is said to have the fingerprint of St Peter on its
GUTTER PROBLEMS?
side (mine in this case!) The herring gulls in the sky are a familiar sight in Brighton and the Seven Sisters cliffs an iconic feature of our Sussex landscape. I wanted to show the locality of the church and have the men fishing on the south coast rather than the Sea of Galilee.” Father Alexander Lucie-Smith took over as parish priest of St Peter’s last year. He said: “Stained glass is a form of image that is particularly powerful. There is something about the way the light shines through the glass and transforms it that speaks to the human soul. In our own new stained glass we see the Fisher of Men in a Sussex setting, and it reminds us that the mission of the Church, entrusted to Peter, is not just for a season or one place, but for all times, until the end, and for all nations. We are very fortunate here that, over 100 years ago, a parish and a church were founded by our forebears, and they took care to ensure that everything should be as fine and beautiful as possible. We need to conserve what we have inherited, and build on those foundations.”

This article is by Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth, who is also a beekeeper...
WEST HOVE
HONEY BEES ARE THRIVING IN WEST HOVE There has been a high number of swarms of honey bees this year – four on St Leonard’s Gardens alone! This is wonderful news for our area and for the wellbeing of bees locally.. At the time of writing, I have collected 18 swarms this year from all sorts of weird and wonderful places such as the top of a tree, the underside of a trampoline, a conservatory window, the grass of Wish Park, and above the water on the eastern arm of Brighton Marina. Every single one has been different. Also different has been the way in which residents have responded generally to swarms of bees since I first started beekeeping five years ago. I recall a lot more alarm and distress in past years. These days people seem a lot more willing to share photographs and videos online to track down a beekeeper, rather than call a pest-controller. People now seem to be fully behind the bee cause, and even gather in groups to watch a swarm collection, and then cheer if/when it goes well. Kids especially seem to be clued-up. The questions that I got asked when I gave a talk at my niece’s school locally were phenomenal. They seem to be growing up loving nature which is exactly as it should be. A swarm ultimately takes place when a colony divides. The bees aren’t angry when they swarm. They are just looking for a new home. A swarm landing, or being collected, is incredible to behold and embrace. My little daughter often comes out with me for bee adventures and loves it. I have around 40 hives presently which is likely to produce nearly 1 tonne of honey this year. I see the hobby as a welcome break from my time on the Council and a wonderful way of speaking to residents and
traders outside of the political environment. As far as my work on the council goes, backed by Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn, I have proposed both bee bricks for solitary bees and swift boxes for all new-build planning applications. This looks to be made local policy shortly. In Brighton & Hove, we apparently have enough pollinating insects for the number of plants that require them so it’s really now a question of planting more. Garry and I have won funding for over 20 new trees for Wish Ward and will keep pushing for more – especially on Portland Road. Cllr Robert Nemeth robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Nathalie’s monthly health tip...
WHY YOU AREN’T (QUITE) WHAT YOU EAT... Contrary to popular belief, being healthy does not just depend on what you eat. More accurately: ‘you are what you can digest (and absorb)’. Do you ever feel out of sorts despite all the ‘good’ food you eat? The reason is simple: your digestion and absorption might not be working well. This may come as a shock, but not many of us are able to properly digest the nuts, seeds, wholegrains, raw vegetables and pulses we’ve been told are healthy. Not only that, but eating these also prevents you from absorbing some essential nutrients. Why? Many so-called healthy foods, like raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, pulses, grains, contain anti-nutrients (ie: phytic 29 acid, leptins, saponins...) that are meant to protect these foods from pests. Anti-nutrients interfere with digestive enzymes and will dramatically slow digestion and nutrient absorption. So if you regularly suffer from bloat, gas, irregular bowels etc, follow these guidelines: Soak, sprout and ferment nuts, seeds, pulses and grains. Nut butters and freshly ground seeds are more digestible. Cook (lightly) all your vegetables, and eat ripe fruit. Practise mindful eating. Slow down, chew and breathe while you eat.
As usual, listen to your body’s signals. Symptoms are there for a reason – ignore them at your peril.
Soak nuts to make them more digestible

WEST HOVE
A charity event...
MACMILLAN COASTAL GARDEN TRAIL There are 12 brand new gardens this year on the eighth Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail, which takes place over the weekend of 27th and 28th July. The annual event, organised by Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group, raises money for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton, which offers local support for people affected by cancer. At least 22 gardens between Brighton & Hove and Seaford will be opening their gates. All the gardens will open between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 27th or Sunday 28th July, or both days, many serving home-made tea and cakes. Entry costs £3 per garden, or £8 for a day ticket. One garden opening in West Hove is at 33 St Leonard’s 33 Gardens, BN3 4QA. It is a pretty work in progress with lots of pastel colours and a large garden studio which will
be open. The owner, Jade Diable, will be selling plants and some garden-related art work with a percentage donated to Macmillan. There will be home-made tea and cakes too, and jars of honey from her neighbour’s bee hives. The garden is open on 27th and 28th July from 10am. There is restricted parking between 11am and 12 noon; parking is otherwise free for the rest of the day. (No WC facilities.) There are also open gardens not far from West Hove in Trafalgar Road, Portslade, and Shirley Drive, Hove. The trail website – www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk – has details of all the gardens on the trail, or you can get more information from Geoff Stonebanks on 01323 899296. A local update…
FRIENDS OF STONEHAM PARK
33 St Leonard’s Gardens
Greening up the Park has been our theme for the last year and, at our most recent meeting, that is what we agreed to do. Our plan is to build some serious raised flower beds out of railway sleepers, which will be populated with shrubs and other hardy flowering plants along one of the boundaries and will be executed by our Gardening Group. A new, fun mural is also in the pipeline. Our AGM is coming up soon. Weather permitting, we will be having it in the park with some Pimm’s on 11 July. Hope to see you there! Richard Hearnden

PADDLE ROUND THE PIER 6TH & 7TH JULY 2019... Since its inception in 1996 Paddle Round the Pier has grown into the largest FREE charity beach festival in Europe. The annual event is now a firm fixture on the Brighton & Hove events calendar, taking place on the beautiful Hove Lawns. The festival now features the very best in water, street and urban sports, live music and family-focused entertainment. Over the years the organisation has raised over £300,000 for local causes and I am really excited to be a part of this dynamic volunteer-led team. 35 Two years ago PRTP took the step to become a charity. This means we are now able to award grants to a greater number of organisations and groups. Our charitable aims are the promotion of and participation in safe, amateur water sports; and advancement and education in water safety and lifesaving techniques. The impact large events have on the environment is something that PRTP takes very seriously. Since 2012 PRTP has been trying to minimise the use of single-use plastics and we are pleased to say that last year’s festival was circa 95% single-use plastic free. We have also implemented a large-scale recycling programme across the site, alongside minimising the use of generators; having no additional lighting; and encouraging the use of public transport to further reduce the environmental impact of the event. This year we even have a designated bus route/stop for PRTP. New for 2019 we are excited to have exhibitors such as the Brighton Dolphin Project, Re-Plastic, Eco-Bricks and many more demonstrating ways to both reduce and remove plastic use. There are activities for all members of the family including our furry friends with the introduction of the Doggie Paddle last year. Whilst all this is going on within the Land Paddle Village, there are a host of water activities open to everyone, from Paddle Something Unusual to The Big Paddle, where we all grab our board, SUP, kayak,
or other paddled craft and set off towards and around the West Pier. With the support of the watersports industry, Brighton & Hove City Council and many local businesses, #PRTP19 is set to be the biggest ever. For this or any of our other events, register now via our website: www.paddleroundthepier.com

WEST HOVE
Update from your Local Action Team...
NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM... Pavements: At the West Hove Forum’s meeting in June, we discussed the state of pavements in West Hove. Many paving slabs are broken and repairs are often made with asphalt. These asphalt surfaces can become very uneven when tree roots surface and become serious trip hazards. The council has been trialling permeable paving in Central Hove, in places where tree roots are pushing up. It’s a spongy material and moves with the tree roots. It’s been successful but costs more than ordinary tarmac. The council will spend a million pounds on pavement repairs in the next year and we are hoping to get some of that spent in West Hove. You can report pavement issues through a form at: bit.ly/pavementreporting. 37
Pavement parking is also a continuing issue and damages pavements. It is illegal in London but not in other parts of the country, although Wish ward councillors last year successfully got it banned in part of Portland Road through a Traffic Regulation Order. The Government is currently deciding whether to enable councils outside London to prohibit pavement parking citywide. If you see a vehicle parked where you think it should not be, you can report it to the council by phone – 0345 603
A pavement cracked by a tree root 5469 option 2 (answerphone service) – or through the council website: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/ parking-and-travel/parking/reporting-a-vehicle-parkedwhere-it-should-not-be.

Where it’s not specifically prohibited, parking a vehicle on the pavement could still be an offence of obstruction (for example if a wheelchair can’t get through). It is also an offence to drive across the pavement, to park on the pavement by the side of yellow lines, or to park a heavy goods vehicle on the pavement. Reports can be made to police via www. operationcrackdown.org for a variety of different types of antisocial driving or abandoned vehicles. They might contact the Road Policing Unit or send a letter to the offender. Should they keep receiving reports about the same vehicle, they will task a frontline officer to take action or give advice. Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants: The West Hove Forum has £3,000 to distribute from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund. Small, not-for-profit community groups in West Hove can bid for up to £500 to spend on a project with a clear health outcome – email westhoveforum@gmail.com for an application form. The deadline is 30th September.

The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 4th September at The Gather Inn near Hove Lagoon. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.
