When we watch the terrible scenes unfold in the Ukraine it quite rightly makes anything else seem very trivial and unimportant.

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News

HANOVER

News from Steph Powell, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

I’m sure I speak for us all when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with the Ukrainians, a people who are showing immense resolve in this horrifying situation. We’ve all been touched to see the Pavilion illuminated in blue and yellow, and the Ukrainian flag is also flying atop the town halls as a mark of solidarity. The Government has now published details of their Ukraine Scheme allowing Ukrainians with family members in the UK to get 3-year UK visas. Local people are helping the relief effort in so many ways. The city continues to be a welcoming city to all. Hanover Community Association

HANOVER

An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally. Eggcitement in the garden – Easter is approaching! Why not come along to the Hanover Community Centre on Saturday, 9 April for an Easter egg hunt in the garden? The hunt takes place between 11am and 12.30pm. Solve the clues and win an egg. Entrance fee is 50p per child. Refreshments will also be available, and all proceeds from the event will be donated to Ukraine relief funds.

Starlings have declined dramatically in recent years and are currently red-listed as species of high conservation concern. These species historically readily nested in buildings throughout the city but, with changes in construction methods, availability of nest spaces has become ever more limited, so putting up nest boxes can make a real difference. Fitness begins at 40 - Have you been wanting to try yoga? Or perhaps get back to a yoga practice after some time away due to illness or injury? Are you feeling the aches and pains of working from home? Join Donna on Tuesday lunchtimes for her Gentle Accessible Yoga Class for Over 40s which incorporates conscious breathing and mindful movement - using props such as chairs, blocks or blankets. Join this weekly class for increased mobility, flexibility and build strength moving at a pace that suits your body exactly as it is. Tuesdays (Term Time Only) 1-2pm. Email to book / £10 drop in / Class Packs available. Please bring your own mat if possible. Any questions, reach out to Donna directly: donna@donnarama.yoga. 9 Hanover news…

Under a Blue Sky

Hanover Arts Trail

Under a Blue Sky opens this spring (1 to 24 April, Wednesday to Sunday) at Phoenix Art Space in Waterloo Place.

We are pleased to announce that the Hanover Arts Trail will be opening its collective doors again in May.

The Garden

It showcases the work of Alan Payler, after he claimed first prize at Outside In’s national exhibition in 2019, alongside that of other artists who also attend the Community Art Project in Darlington. Alan Payler’s work ‘The Garden’ was selected from 90 exhibited works. Grayson Perry described ‘The Garden’ as being ‘the work of art that most closely aligned with something I would be happy to make myself and gave me joy.’ This exhibition takes its name from another of Alan Payler’s works, ‘Blue Sky’. Director and founder of Outside In Marc Steene says of Alan Payler: “The shimmering fields of colour he creates using a felt pen, the humblest of mediums, reveal a true creative intelligence.”

A new exhibition at Phoenix Art Space…

This year promises to be amazing with lots of events celebrating 40 years of Brighton Artists Open Houses. We have seven venues in and around Hanover, including three new houses. As part of our trail, we will be running a Children’s Art Trail to encourage families to visit over the four weekends and we hope that people of all ages will come from near and far to experience the colourful streets of Hanover! •

12 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Play, plant, heart and bark! Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start my monthly article for the Brightonian, writes Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. This month’s contribution to the city’s favourite community magazine is a bit of a round-up and a look forward. First off, a virtually final call for people to make their views known about how they would like to see the first phase of the play area be developed. As reported previously, Brighton & Hove City Council worked closely with our Friends group and members of the local community to craft a questionnaire to test opinions on how it should spend the £147,000 allocated to redeveloping the play area. Assuming this magazine lands on your doorstep on April 1st you have until April 8th to contribute to the consultation. Here’s the web address: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ QPPA

Queen’s Park Tennis Club now has a concrete asset to demonstrate the fruitful nature of the partnership. A defibrillator, jointly purchased, has now arrived. The life-saving kit will be installed outside the club house and training in its use is being offered through the tennis club. Anyone wishing to be trained in its use should either email FoQP (info@fqpbrighton.net) or approach the tennis club by emailing Alan Sanchez: alan.sanchez@qptc.co.uk. Finally, something to look forward to in the Summer. A date has been fixed for the FoQP’s popular dog show, Bark in the Park. It returns on Saturday, 9th July.

Last month our volunteers came out in force over two consecutive Saturdays to support our brilliant Cityparks staff to plant 15 saplings purchased with funds from our successful bid to the Forestry Commission’s Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF). The remaining nine trees will be planted next season. Local schools, written into the UTCF bid, will have a part to play in on-going care and nurturing of the trees. The children’s first opportunity will come in May when they will get a chance to help with the mulching. Volunteering can sometimes be challenging – especially when the weather is grim (which it was on the second Saturday). But spirits were particularly raised when 102-year-old Betty Hughes dropped by to support the Friends of Queen’s Park tree-planting volunteers. She told everyone, with a twinkle in her eye, that she looked forward to seeing all the saplings reach maturity! Meanwhile, the collaboration between the Friends of Queen’s Park (FoQP) and the To advertise to 3000 QUEENS PARK homes and 12,000 across Brighton call 01273 551021

Music & Wine are hosting three concerts this month .

On Friday 1st April cellist Louise McMonagle and pianist Neil Georgeson will perform music by Debussy and Bartok. Also alongside these they will perform more recent works by Reiko Füting - a musical meditation with fragments of folk songs; Ann Cleare, who probes the relation between inner and outer worlds of sound through a world of extended techniques; Eric Wubbels’ frenetic piece alternating compulsive loops of thought and repetitive behaviour with plateaus of regular, “idling” motion; and Shruthi Rajasekar, who shows us how music can express joy! On Friday 8th April the Brighton Chamber Ensemble (violin, clarinet, cello, piano) returns to St Luke’s with a first half consisting of a variety of duos and trios and the second half Messiaen’s profound Quartet for the End of Time.

17 News from Labour councillors Nick Childs and Amanda Evans…

It has been a busy couple of months with Budget Council being held in February. Councillor Evans and I were delighted that our long-standing calls for the city’s free swimming scheme to be extended to 16- and 17-year-olds was finally agreed, so too funding made available to bring Saltdean Lido into the free children’s swimming scheme (negotiations now underway over details).

We continue to raise issues around anti-social behaviour and are pleased that progress is being made on the regeneration of Upper Rock Gardens with works on the new crossing almost complete and plans to place the area, including the former toilets, under the stewardship of St Mary’s Church.

We were also really pleased that our call for late library fines for children to be scrapped were accepted and that these will be replaced with an innovative scheme where children ‘read off’ their fines. Locally, the St Luke’s Church Community Library has also been restocked by the Council, following concerns we raised about lack of local library provision. New and older stock is available to borrow on Saturday mornings at the church.

The project to create a traffic-free school street at Queens Park School will soon be in place, but we remain very concerned about the lack of progress with the two crossings and speed calming measures that we have long demanded for Freshfield Road. Whilst we did secure police spot checks on the road and a new monitoring system has now been agreed, this is insufficient and we will continue to keep raising this issue with the Council.

Locally, we have awarded our annual ward grants to St John the Baptist Church for their ongoing work on the Fitzherbert Hub, a community centre providing a food bank and pay what you can afford takeaway café, and to Tarner Project for their work with local young people in the Tarner Park area.

Finally, like many residents, we are horrified by the events in Ukraine and were pleased to support an all-party motion at Council condemning the illegal invasion and making clear that Brighton and Hove will, as a city of sanctuary, do all we can to assist and welcome refugee families. Residents can find out how they can join us in helping our Ukrainian brothers and sisters at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ news/2022/how-help-humanitarian-crisis-ukraine

Works have begun on the refurbishment of Tarner Park children’s playground after we secured £70,000 for this project in 2020. A consultation on the six-figure sum refurbishment of the Queens Park Play Area is now underway. Funding is allocated and works will commence shortly. We would encourage residents to take part at www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/news/2022/ play-area-consultation-bring-queenspark-breath-fresh-air

18 This article is by Kemptown resident Lina Talbot…

St George’s Community Centre How it came about If you were designing a pleasant, non-commercial place for people to meet, what would you choose as its most important features? A large space, heating in the winter, pleasing decor and a place for coffee and a snack…? Voilà! – the Community Centre within St George’s Church. Ah, but it’s a church… Yes, the Church is responsible for the smooth running of the place, so that you can make use of it. But about half of Brits are not religious and maybe some would feel uncomfortable having informal chats - a laugh, even! with friends inside a church building? For Rev Andrew, the whole point is to enable everyone to be able to use it and meet up with others - a far better purpose, he believes, than just holding services for a couple of hours a week in an otherwise empty building. 20 years ago the Kemp Town Community Forum was set up to spearhead community projects. Together with the Parish Church Council, local councillors, our MP, and business and residents’ representatives, the Rev pushed to see their dream become reality. After two years of planning and one year of construction - ! - the crypt was converted into community rooms, and the church refurbished to hold events such as concerts and festivities. Not everyone agreed with this mixed use, but St George’s Church wants to be viewed as liberal and forward thinking. “All churches are doing now what we were doing 20 years ago,” says Rev Andrew. “Back then they were telling me off!” St George’s makes no profit from being a venue, just covers expenses. Who funded the reconstruction? – amazingly it was the EU through their Urban funding, and the Lottery. Now the Community Forum is no more, nor our eligibility for EU funds…

Group activities, now taking off again after peak Covid, are only partly listed on the noticeboards: a full list is available from the counter inside. And the latest addition to the building itself is one large screen – for the new Film Club and to accompany talks and church services. Rev Andrew was telling me how the younger generation concentrate less well on a talk without visual information added in… he notices! Kemptown does now have a number of HMOs, but its diverse qualities also continue to attract the well paid with a good pension. Will all sectors of Kemptown’s residents explore their Community Centre? In the café, Sandro would be delighted to have to bake more focaccia and make double the quantity of butternut squash and ginger soup! Lina Talbot Reviewed on behalf of Kemptown residents

25 News from Siriol Hugh-Jones, Green councillor for Preston Park…

Preston Park Councillor News

As well as refugees, Brighton & Hove is likely to feel the effects of the war in a further squeeze in the cost of living due to higher energy prices, and eventually higher commodities and food prices. The council has taken steps to mitigate the worst of the energy price hikes and at February’s Budget Council, we committed over £500,000 for food, housing and Council Tax support for struggling households. The velodrome stand in Preston Park November’s Housing Committee had already increased the Warm, Safe Home the disappearance of Withdean ward grant available to homeowners and private • • changes to Patcham (renamed Pattenants on low incomes from £7500 to a cham and Hollingbury ward) and to maximum of £20,000. Preston Park ward The grant is means-tested and can be used to fund electrical and gas safety checks and repairs, boiler repairs or replacement loft and cavity wall insulation. The increase in the maximum grant will also allow for the installation of air source heat pumps to further reduce carbon emissions.

To find out more about the Warm, Safe Home grants, contact the council’s Disabled Facilities Grant team by emailing disabledfacilitiesgrant@brighton-hove.gov. uk or calling 01273 294366. For advice on help with existing fuel bills, see https:// www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/benefits/helpand-support/help-fuel-bills.

Preston Park ward councillors have allocated this year’s £3000 ward budget to the creation of a mural for the 12 corrugated iron panels that form the back of the velodrome stand in Preston Park.

Boundary changes The Boundary Commission, which is a national organisation, has been looking at the ward boundaries in Brighton & Hove and, as well as blurring the Brighton/ Hove boundary, has proposed some major changes including:

FIVEWAYS

As I write this, the war in Ukraine has entered its third week. The council awaits the details of the Government refugee sponsorship scheme, but early indications are that it will not repeat the mistakes of the Afghan scheme by leaving people in Home Office accommodation for months on end.

new wards at Fiveways, Stanmer (which would cover Coldean) and Round Hill.

You can have your say on the proposals until 11 April by going to https://consultation.lgbce.org.uk/have-your-say/29490 Facelift for velodrome stand

Local artists have been invited to make submissions by 4 April. The successful artist will be selected by a panel which will include residents and velodrome users. They will then need to work with the local community to create a mural that welcomes and celebrates all in sport. Siriol Hugh-Jones Siriol.Hugh-Jones@brighton-hove.gov.uk

27 Meet a medical herbalist with a dispensary at Coachwerks…

Local person…Jessie Martelhof How did you become a medical herbalist? I attended a herb walk many years ago with another herbalist and I was utterly astounded that the little plants I knew as weeds had medicinal properties and a long history of use. This led me down a road of copious herbal book-buying and self-study until I realised I needed to make this my full-time career, because I was just so obsessed and fascinated! I then trained for three years at Lincoln University to become a medical herbalist and have never looked back. I love my work. I love bringing people and plants together and making a difference in people’s lives. I now lead herb walks and workshops myself where I hope to inspire a new generation of herb lovers. Tell us more about your new dispensary… I converted an art studio in the Coachwerks artists’ studio complex near Fiveways into a herbal dispensary, shop and clinic. I wanted to create a space which makes herbal medicine accessible to all - where people can drop in and get free advice and expertly blended herbal medicines for an affordable price. I keep a wide range of dried herbs, tinctures, creams, oils, and capsules, as well as some other supplements like CBD oil. People can also book longer appointments with me for more complicated health issues. What kind of conditions can you help with? Everything from women’s hormonal health challenges to coughs, colds and viruses, digestive problems, anxiety, poor sleep and more. My holistic approach means I treat every person as an individual and I will make up a unique blend of herbs

Jessie Martelhof is a medical herbalist and now has her own dispensary at Coachwerks in Hollingdean Terrace which is open two days a week for free health consultations.

to suit their specific health picture. I also offer nutritional advice as this can also be super helpful in certain health conditions. One thing I love about herbal medicine is that within one herbal blend I can address several health challenges at once. Are there any potential issues with herbal medicines? Luckily most of the herbs I use are very gentle and safe but there are a small number which are not appropriate to take with other medications as they may cause some unwanted interactions. I will always find out if people are taking any medications and prescribe accordingly. What do you like to do in your spare time? I love spending time out in nature, going for walks and hunting for mushrooms. I also really enjoy music and creativity, so you’ll often find me singing in a choir, going to gigs, or doing a spot of sewing at home. 29 News from the council…

Preston Park welcomes symbolic oak A ceremony took place in Preston Park on 23rd February to mark the planting of a native oak tree honouring the enormous contribution of Jewish refugees in Britain.

The planting of the oak is part of the “80 trees for 80 years” campaign run by the AJR to commemorate their 80th anniversary. 80 native oak trees are being planted around Britain in honour of people and places that symbolise the enormous contribution made to every walk of British life by refugees who escaped from Nazi Europe. Each location has its own unique link with AJR members.

FIVEWAYS

The Mayor of Brighton & Hove was among those joining Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) CEO Michael Newman.

Each tree acts as a platform for telling the story of Britain’s Jewish refugees. A time capsule alongside the roots of every tree contains key facts about the refugee community and shares the life story of one or more AJR members. The Preston Park oak will soon appear on the AJR’s UK Holocaust Map, illustrating the UK’s sites of Holocaust memory.

Ditchling Road footpath Work has begun to improve and resurface the footpath which runs alongside Ditchling Road. £300,000 has been allocated from the council’s Carbon Neutral Fund to be spent on upgrading the 2km stretch of footpath between Woodbourne Avenue and Coldean Lane. The new 3m wide surface will be flat and smooth, suitable for walking, cycling and by people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters, adapted cycles and pushchairs. Dropped kerbs at either end of the footpath will also be widened. The footpath was originally installed in 2014. The work is similar to that undertaken last year to improve the footpath running alongside Falmer Road. The work is expected to take approximately five months to complete, during which time the path will need to be closed. There will be temporary traffic lights on Ditchling Road and a reduction in the speed limit. This will ensure safe working for the team on site. This may also lead to delays on the road and motorists may wish to use alternative routes. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

35 A new refill service operating across the city…

Local news…

A new way to use less plastic

Sussex artists invited to exhibit at i360

A new refill service has opened in Brighton, and this one is a little different. It’s called LESS and it provides two ways people can get personal care and household care products without plastic waste.

LESS is making deliveries with its electric vans

For those that want the work done for them, it will deliver ready-to-use products to your doorstep in its electric vans. When they’re empty, it will pick them up to wash and refill, making for a closed loop without any single-use plastic. And for those that want to put in more effort, LESS will set you up so you can run your own refill service right from your home, providing refills for your friends and neighbours. It delivers everything you need to get going – from reusable glass and stainless-steel bottles to a range of products that spans upscale organic lines, leading eco-branded products and a solid and cost-effective value range.

Sussex-based artists are invited to enter their work to a panel of industry judges who will select the best pieces to showcase at the exhibition and award prizes. The Sussex Contemporary Open Call, or ‘The Sussex’ for short, will be the first major art exhibition to celebrate the rich creativity in the county.

GENERAL

A major art exhibition that celebrates Sussex artists will be held in October at the British Airways i360.

The free exhibition will run from 8th to 22nd October 2022. Submissions should be made by 31st August at www.thesussex.co.uk.

LESS was set up in 2020 and received financial support from Innovate UK and the anti-waste charity, WRAP. It is currently available to all Brighton and Hove postcodes with plans to expand through the summer. Reuse and refill – not more or better recycling – is the only near-term solution to plastic waste and LESS points out that, if 5% of Brighton & Hove’s population refilled five products a month, the city would save over 20 tonnes of plastic waste a year. My hours supplement family visits and I feel I’m part of a routine that is helping my customers stay independent and in their own homes. They’re all fabulous company, we genuinely have a good time together.” Good Life Sorted was inspired by founder Constantine Karampatsos’s grandmother Zoe, who stayed active and independent in her own home until she was 96, thanks to the help of her neighbour’s company and a little help with the daily chores.

By helping with tasks like cleaning, shopping, laundry, preparing meals and providing transport, our professional Helpers enable older people to remain happy in their own homes.” Mandy Shrader, another Helper, adds, “My children are now adults and I was made redundant from my role in the hospitality industry during the Covid pandemic. Being a Helper is perfect, as it means I can work the hours I choose, help local elderly people, while earning at the same time and feeling appreciated for what I do.” Good Life Sorted is already operating successfully across a number of regions in England and has Helpers in your area. If you, or someone you know, could do with a little extra support, they could provide the connection needed. 38 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Hanningtons... a famous Brighton store Do you know someone with an obsessive interest in something, who can’t get enough of the details? While their tunnel vision might not suit the compromises necessary to everyday life, these people are heaven-sent to those who collate and manage archive collections.

Christopher Samuelson (1920-2001) was one such individual. After retirement from his job as concert organiser for the London proms in 1982, he turned his attention to Brighton and Hove. He walked the main streets, taking a separate photograph of each building, and developing them back at home in the dark room which he had installed in an understairs cupboard. He

then pasted the modern photograph into a scrapbook alongside other ephemera associated with that particular building – older pictures, news cuttings, adverts, orders, receipts, even paper bags. He ended up with hundreds of scrapbooks, each dedicated to a particular street and showing the buildings in all their glory, or all their decrepitude – and sometimes both!

Hanningtons was a byword among residents for expense and quality. Over-50s can still remember the warren of narrow passages and creaky stairs that led the customer from one room to another, treading on royal blue carpet throughout.

The capitulation to cheaper shops was slow and gradual. Ladies’ lingerie was a hushed area patronised by mature women and the fur department was even quieter and patrolled by fearsome custodians. A café installed in the 1980s on the first floor with a view over the East Street taxi rank was extremely difficult to locate unless one was familiar with the store’s internal layout, and did nothing to stem the store’s decline. By the 1990s, the shop window mannequins were objects of derision to passing teenagers. Christopher Samuelson’s scrapbooks (ref AMS7191/3) are a marvellous resource for anyone researching the shops and buildings of Brighton and Hove, and they can viewed as scanned images at The Keep (www.thekeep.info). Samuelson never retired from his obsession; he was still taking photographs days before he died in April 2001. GENERAL

Samuelson’s collection of images showing the Hanningtons store on the corner of North Street and East Street runs to several pages; as well it might, seeing that the ‘Harrods of Brighton’ took up an enormous area behind North Street and traded for nearly 200 years before its closure in 2001. These two pages give us a good cross-section of what Samuelson amassed. We have adverts from 1928 showing ladies’ hats, ‘coatees’ for bridge players and genteel sportswear, spring suits from 1955 and photographs of Hanningtons from the 1980s taken by Samuelson himself. There were 70 different departments selling everything from furs to fountain pens.

This aquatint from around 1815 shows Donaldson’s Library in Old Steine, on the corner of St James’s Street. This was Brighton’s first library, originally founded by Mr Baker (as Baker’s Library) around 1760 as a single-storey building - the first building on the eastern side of the Steine. In 1806 Mr Donaldson replaced this with a five-storey library. In 1856 the building was taken over by the Electric Telegraph Company. St James’s Mansions are now on the site, with a Subway sandwich shop on the ground floor. © Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, Brighton & Hove

47 News from Martlets hospice…

Christy – I wrote my will to support Martlets Christy, from Brighton, tells us why she and her husband made a will during Martlets’ Will Writing Month, even though they are still young and in good health.

“My mum had cancer and was cared for by Martlets in Hove. We used so many different services that they were able to offer Mum and they also really supported me as her carer. They were amazing and came out and looked after Mum at home. “We wanted to give something back as a thank you. When Martlets Will Writing Month came around in May we decided to get involved. It seemed like a great opportunity to write our wills and help out a worthy cause.

fessionally written offers peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Every year, Martlets team up with professional will writers who offer to write your will in return for a donation to Martlets. Some people also use our scheme to remember us in their wills. Bookings can be made from 1 April to 29 April 2022. Contact our Gifts in Wills Executive, Grant Phillips, on 01273 916960 or email giftsinwills@martlets.co.uk to register your interest.

“Me and Kev had got to a point where it was a sensible move for us to write a will. It was just after we’d bought a house together and we’d been married a couple of years.

“We noticed that one of the local solicitors taking part had also done our house move which was reassuring. The fee that would’ve gone to them went to Martlets instead as a donation. Kev and I have also left donations to Martlets in our wills. For us it was a no-brainer, we’d worked out who we wanted things to go to and it seemed the obvious thing to do to support a local charity. “Some of our friends were shocked that we had written a will already as we were younger than a lot of people are when they get round to writing one. I feel it’s important to look at the bigger picture and get that stuff in place should something happen.” Thinking about what happens after you’re gone isn’t easy. But getting your will proHave a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Our beaches are the primary form of coastal protection from both erosion and flooding, so the council will continue their year-round work to protect the city through regular shingle recycling. This involves moving, on average, 16,000 tonnes of shingle from beaches near Brighton Marina to beaches further west and near Shoreham Port. The shingle is moved naturally from west to east by wave movement in a process known as ‘longshore drift’.

GENERAL

The scheme will: repair and strengthen flood walls and defences where necessary; replace existing flood walls and defences that cannot be repaired; raise flood defences where necessary to protect the coast from the effects of climate change; and install new timber groynes along King’s Esplanade. The first stages of the scheme will include site surveys, ground investigations and technical design planning.

You can find out more about the scheme at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/coastal-protection

Adult Cycle Training The council are encouraging adults from all backgrounds to take advantage of the support offered to wannabe cyclists in the city. The Adult Cycle Training courses can help anyone, from complete beginners to experienced cyclists who want to brush up on their skills. The council offer 1:2:1 and group courses, which will help people feel confident on their bikes. They begin with off-road assessment of skills and build from there. You can find more information at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/city-cycling-skills-and-training Free courses for eligible adults All the Adult Cycle Training courses are offered free to eligible learners. To enrol on a free course, you must be: aged 19 or over, and a UK citizen, a citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA) or have a Right of Abode in the UK, and you must have lived in the UK / EEA for at least three years. Priority will be given to learners with qualifications below Level 2, on means tested benefits, or a low income. 52 Advertorial: St John’s College in Kemptown...

Embracing diversity and compassionate learning Situated in Kemptown, St. John’s provides young autistic people, aged 19-25 years, the majority of whom have learning disabilities, with a stimulating curriculum that is shaped by their individual strengths, interests and challenges, preparing them for greater independence in their future lives. Using a range of well-equipped on-site facilities - and by accessing the vibrant local community, learning at St. John’s is fun, relevant and progressive, for day and residential learners. Our specialist team has a range of expertise and experience with which to support our learners throughout their three-year placements with us. We focus our work around five key outcomes for our learners:

Learner Giles (right) during two-week theatre residency by Flute Theatre, 2021. engaged to support individual learner needs. Wellbeing is the first and most important of these. From positive wellbeing, all the other outcomes can grow. Our team supports our learners to reach a level of wellbeing that enables them to engage effectively with their own learning. For some learners, this means ensuring they have the correct communication and visual resources. For others, it’s supporting the management of anxieties and being mindful of the need for an autism friendly environment. Others may need specific support with medical needs like allergies, diabetes and epilepsy. The team includes occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, positive behaviour support practitioners, a counsellor and a nursing team. Physiotherapy is available if required and we have our own psychology assistants, who work with clinical psychologists,

“We want to improve lives by making a practical difference to our young people by embracing their unique diversity,” says Simon Charleton, CEO. “We seek to meet their complex learning needs through an innovative, evidence-based and compassionate approach to learning.” St. John’s also offers autism training to educators and others across the region. 53 Dr Mark Harper tells us about a sea swim challenge to raise money for the city’s hospitals…

Chill – the cold water swim cure Dr Mark Harper is a consultant anaesthetist at University Hospitals Sussex and a keen open water swimmer in the sea in Brighton. He has done extensive research into the positive effects of cold-water swimming, showing it can contribute to recovery from depression. He is currently on sabbatical, working in southern Norway where he’s been swimming in even colder water than usual!

Doors open 6.00pm The Hove Club, Fourth Avenue, Hove Tickets £5.00 – please visit the website for details: www.brightonhospitalfriends.org.uk Proceeds to Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals

My book “Chill - The Cold Water Swim Cure” will be available on Amazon from 7 July 2022.

We asked Mark to tell us about the challenge… The best way to find out about Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals 2022 Swim Challenge is to come along to the event or visit our website: www.brightonhospitalfriends.org.uk

BSC is the oldest swimming club in the UK – over 150 years old. For many years it was more of a pool swimming club but it actually started out as a sea swimming club. Of course the reason Brighton is what it is today is thanks to Dr Richard Russell and his sea cure.

What are the benefits of sea swimming?

How can people donate?

Sea swimming and any outdoor swimming has benefits on many levels. These include the proven benefits of exercise, being outdoors in nature, a sense of community and a sense of overcoming challenge. But it also has a unique physiological effect which is mainly linked to its effect on inflammation. Modern lifestyles tend to raise our baseline levels of inflammation and daily stresses take it to harmful levels rather than helpful levels. Immersing yourself in cold water reduces these excessive fluctuations and reduces baseline levels of inflammation. Inflammation is at the root of many common chronic and degenerative diseases.

You can donate via our website: www.brightonhospitalfriends.org.uk

You swim with Brighton Swimming Club. Tell us more about the club…

GENERAL

On Thursday 21 April he’s giving a talk about the benefits of cold water immersion and launching Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals 2022 Sea Swim Challenge. There will be a special appearance from the star of Vindication Swim, Kirsten Callaghan.

What will the donations pay for? All donations will support the work of our local NHS hospitals and services. We will also be funding a restorative sea-swimming course for NHS staff at Ocean Set this summer for the second year.

57 Looking forward to a host of events across Sussex in May…

Brighton Festival 2022 This year’s Brighton Festival will return to a full-scale programme, with more than 150 events taking place from 7-29 May.

Major projects for 2022 include the world premiere of Unchain Me, a site-specific Brighton Festival commission from dreamthinkspeak, directed by Tristan Sharps. This exciting multi-media performance taking place at venues across the city is inspired by Dostoyevsky’s novel The Possessed. Marwa Al-Sabouni has collaborated with Syrian architect Ghassan Jansiz to design a new space for social and artistic exchange on Hove seafront, The Riwaq, inspired by her own Syrian architectural heritage. The Riwaq will play host to programming partners Carousel, Little Green Pig, Best Foot Music and In-house Records. This year’s original Brighton Festival commissions include Double Murder, performed by choreographer Hofesh Shechter’s inimitable dance company to his original score. UK premieres include Witness, an installation from artist Emma Critchley, using underwater dance, spoken word and science to link the human body to disappearing glaciers; and acrobats from Australia’s exhilarating Circa ensemble will bring Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring to the circus stage in Sacre. Emma Rice’s Wise Children will also return to Brighton Festival with their critically acclaimed

The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians

musical version of Wuthering Heights.

GENERAL

For the first time, Brighton Festival welcomes two Guest Co-Directors, Syrian architect and author Marwa Al-Sabouni and Tristan Sharps, Artistic Director of Brighton-based theatre makers dreamthinkspeak. Marwa and Tristan have chosen the theme of Rebuilding for this year’s programme.

Musical highlights include performances from The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, who many will know from their work with Damon Albarn and Gorillaz; and Californian Grammy-nominated trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, whose work combines funk, hip-hop and classical influences. Residents of Hangleton and Knoll, East Brighton, Moulsecoomb and Bevendean will welcome back Our Place – a free celebration of community creativity. Closing the festival with a bang will be Charles Hazlewood’s Paraorchestra presenting SMOOSH! This celebratory musical parade through the streets of Brighton invites young and older audiences alike to join in on pop-karaoke classics from the likes of Fatboy Slim, Kate Bush and Basement Jaxx. 59 News from the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust…

Grant For Museum Roof Repairs Galleries, museums, libraries and cultural venues across the country, including the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust (RPMT), are to benefit from almost £50 million of funding which will improve people’s access to the arts, safeguard cultural assets for future generations and power economic growth through culture.

In 2019, a survey found the roof of the museum needed urgent repairs to the Georgian glass lantern above the central main gallery. The grant will enable the work to be carried out as a matter of urgency and repairs are expected to take around four months starting in Autumn 2022. CEO of the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust Hedley Swain said: “We are so grateful to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport and Arts Council England for this important award from the Cultural Investment Funds, includ-

ing Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND). It will allow us to make urgent and timely repairs to the roof of Brighton Museum and Art gallery allowing us to stay open and plan with confidence for the future. Additional funding will be provided by Brighton & Hove City Council to whom we are also deeply grateful.”

GENERAL

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery has been awarded a grant of £1,463,769 by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports, delivered by Arts Council England. The museum, a Grade II listed Georgian building on the Royal Pavilion Estate, dates from 1804 and is one of the first purpose-built museums in the UK.

61 A group for anyone with an enthusiasm for wildlife…

Brighton and Hove’s Wildlife Forum Brighton and Hove’s Wildlife Forum (BHWF) formed in 2009 out of the need to coordinate city-wide efforts in preserving and enhancing nature.

Due to its rich and varied geological, natural and cultural histories, Brighton and Hove is home to a suite of internationally rare and important habitats and species. As a result, in 2014 the Brighton and Lewes Downs was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the first of its kind in the UK. The region even finished top in the UK in the 2021 City Nature Challenge, an international “Bioblitz” in which cities across the globe compete in an attempt to record as many different species as possible over a four-day period. (The 2022 City Nature Challenge is coming up soon, 29th April-2nd May 2022. Visit thelivingcoast.org.uk/project/ city-nature-challenge to get involved.)

rently collaborating with its partners and BHCC on, including the Black Rock Redevelopment Project and a Wilder Verges pilot study, which will look to replicate the successes of other local authorities in implementing Plantlife’s roadside management for wildflowers programme, bringing vibrant colours and rich biodiversity back into the heart of the city.

GENERAL

Our members include people from local wildlife groups, local experts in their field, such as volunteers from Butterfly Conservation, naturalists, students and professional ecologists. But anyone can join BHWF! What we all have in common is an enthusiasm for wildlife and the same concerns for its future. We believe nature has intrinsic value and is vital for our wellbeing, and we want to make our city richer in nature and increase people’s engagement with the natural world.

BHWF meets every two months either online or at the Booth Museum, where we discuss wildlife in our local areas, swap BHWF works closely with other conserrecent information about the groups, vation organisations, such as The Living and learn about proposed plans by the Coast Biosphere partnership and Sussex council. We also regularly share updates Wildlife Trust, in efforts to help protect on local walks, talks, conservation workand celebrate nature in Brighton and Hove days and campaigns to get involved with, (and beyond). 63 An invitation to parents and carers from social enterprise Make (Good) Trouble…

Join a beach walk & talk After reading an article in The Brightonian (Jan 2022) about available grants from Brighton & Hove City Council’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, Daisy Cresswell, founder of Make (Good) Trouble, decided to apply. “We knew from speaking to parents and carers in person and on our Facebook group, Raising Teens, that there is an urgent need for families who are struggling to find the right levels of support. Many have been negatively affected by the impact of the winter months and Covid-19 on their mental health and wellbeing,” said Daisy Cresswell. “As soon as I saw the feature in the Brightonian, we got our application in. Our beach walks will allow parents and carers to access direct support from a professional, reap the benefits of being together outside in the fresh air and enjoy a free cuppa and a good slice of cake!”

Make (Good) Trouble also offer support with their hugely successful radio show Raising Teens, broadcast on BBC Sussex and Surrey, and now in its fourth series. Raising Teens is a warm-hearted and honest round-table discussion about parenting teenagers and teen mental health. It is hosted by presenter Guy Lloyd, and includes teens’ own stories gathered by Make (Good) Trouble’s 21-year-old reporter Lola Ray. The show aims to dispel myths around teen mental health and offer practical help and tips. All four series are available on catch-up. Search ‘BBC Raising Teens’ or go to www.makegoodtrouble.co.uk/raising-teens/

GENERAL

A series of accessible community-support beach walks starting in May, facilitated by mental health professionals, will form part of a new programme designed to encourage parents and carers who may have experienced social isolation to meet up, share and support each other.

For details of locations, dates and to register your interest, please visit www.makegoodtrouble.co.uk/beachwalk.

The initiative will also include virtual meet-ups via Make (Good) Trouble’s Facebook group, Raising Teens, for those that cannot attend the weekly beach walks. Expert guests will be invited to cover topics such as eating disorders, self-harm, substance misuse, school stress, conflicts in the home and LGBTQ+ support.

65 News from a local charity…

New base for Pedal People Brighton’s accessible cycling charity, Pedal People, has since 2017 been operating very popular year-round cycling adventures for elderly residents of care homes, with volunteer cycle pilots, so that they can feel the wind in their hair. Pedal People now has a new base on Madeira Drive and offers two services: 1.

Elders living in care: Weekly ride schedule. Uplifting outdoor activity, interaction and wind in hair joy.

2.

Accessible Cycle Hub: Ages 4-100+ cycle out together on a range of adaptable, multiseat trikes. GENERAL

Our new hub has landed! From this new base we have accessible and adjustable cycles ready for traffic-free ride options the length of the seafront. We train carers / friends / family to co-pilot, so rides can be enjoyed together - often the first time this is possible for disabled and non-disabled family/friends. Please note we cannot resource one-off/drop-in or general hire, the cycles are for our charitable purposes. Benefits •

Accessible cycling improves wellbeing, health, reduces isolation and increases independence.

Rides are fun with smiles and waves galore.

We see spirits lifted, people report feeling ‘awake again’, ‘alive’, ‘happy’, ‘less anxious or depressed’, healthier, fitter, improved mobility and ‘sleeping better’ after rides.

All return buzzing. People really notice the fabulous, visible cycles and interact positively.

Booking online and in advance essential via www.pedalpeople.org.uk Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

67 City news…

Trial Park & Ride Mill Road is to be used by Brighton & Hove Buses for a trial park and ride scheme from June to September 2022.

Mill Road links Patcham roundabout with Dyke Road roundabout, and these junctions link the A23 and the A27. A report to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on 15th March said that there were no other readily available locations within the city that could offer the space required. The park and ride will operate in a similar way to the scheme used by Brighton

& Hove Albion on match days and the road will be closed to normal traffic. The capacity will be around 450 spaces. It will run from 6am until around midnight, every 12 minutes, seven days a week, except on match days when the site will continue to be used by the football club. In the city centre, buses will terminate at the Old Steine. The Traffic Order has a 12-week objection period, so that anyone will be able to express their views on the trial and any impacts due to displacement will be considered. GENERAL

Introducing a park and ride to minimise car use was one of ten recommendations made by the city’s Climate Assembly in 2020.

Weed management A report to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 15th March, gave an update on Cityclean’s management of weeds. The council developed a plan in 2019 to end the use of pesticides on public land, which means that manual techniques are now used for weed removal. Last year there was a shortage of staff to manage the weeds and contractors had to be used for three weeks to target certain areas of the city. A weed strimmer, which enables quicker removal of weeds, was successfully trialled in 2021. At least three more strimmers will be procured for the 2022 season. A small, mechanical electric sweeper with weed removal attachments will be bought to remove weeds from larger hard surfaces and a trial of weed removal with hot water will be completed in April. Cityclean will also explore how to support residents and community groups to complete weeding activities in their areas. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

69 News from electricity generation company RWE…

Rampion 2 consultation A nine-week public consultation on proposals for the Rampion 2 Offshore Wind Farm, which could power over one million homes and reduce carbon emissions by around 1.8 million tonnes per year, attracted over 12,500 visits last year. Rampion wind farm; photo by DCoolimages.com

GENERAL

Following feedback, RWE became aware that some coastal residents did not receive consultation leaflets as intended. RWE have now written directly to all those addresses which were omitted, to provide an additional opportunity for them to have their say, by 11th April. Those who have previously responded do not need to resend their response. Chris Tomlinson of Rampion 2 said: “We are aiming to submit our final proposals to the Planning Inspectorate by late summer. If approved, Rampion 2 would be up and running later this decade, in time to contribute to the crucial Government target to quadruple offshore wind capacity by 2030, in its goal to reach net zero.” For more information see rampion2.com/consultation.

The view on Rampion 2 of Protect Coastal England…

Rampion 2 - Another View Campaign group Protect Coastal England are opposing Rampion 2, which they say is an ecologically damaging project. The group say: “The Government has a 2030 target of 40GW from offshore wind, which will be met and exceeded by plans already in place or being planned from sites in the North Sea and elsewhere, where the turbines are out of sight of land. Rampion 2 is not needed to meet this goal.” They are concerned that Rampion 2 will be too close to a National Park and is not in the optimal geographical area to benefit from winds. They are also concerned about the construction phase, which will last for three to four years: “The sound of the rams piling the steel foundation will be very noticeable on shore,

and the whole horizon will resemble an industrial building site for years. Trenches to house the interconnection cables will be scoured from the seabed, disturbing both marine life and the kelp forest that conservationists are trying to restore.” They say the onshore cable link across the South Downs will have major consequences for traffic congestion and the ecosystem. They are also worried about the visual effects of the turbines - more than twice the height of Rampion 1, covering four times the area. 71 Meet a local actor who will be appearing at Theatre Royal this month…

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice…Ian Kelsey Ian Kelsey is a Shoreham-based actor who formerly lived in Brighton & Hove. He’s best known for his roles in Emmerdale, Casualty, Coronation Street and Doctors. In April he will be appearing at Theatre Royal Brighton in The Rise and Fall of Little Voice. How long did you live in Brighton & Hove?

Tell us about The Rise and Fall of Little Voice… It’s a northern fairytale about a very timid girl who has an amazing talent. Her mum is a drunk. Her mum’s boyfriend (me) is a rat. When my character discovers her voice and her ability to mimic different artists, he stops at nothing to make a new life for himself by pushing the young girl to her limits to perform in a local club. It goes wrong. Very wrong. It’s a touching but also very funny play. What role will you be playing? Ray Say. The part played by Michael Caine in the film version. What is your favourite role of your career? Could be this one… Dave Glover in Emmerdale was my first big break so that will always be one of my favourite roles. But I would have to say Danny Zuko in Grease. That was a year-long party on that job. I couldn’t do that now!

We hear you also have interests in writing and photography…

GENERAL

Ian Kelsey as Ray Say; photo by Graham Michael

I moved down to Brighton about nine years ago and had a fun two years in Brunswick Terrace sitting on the steps of a night, watching the stag and hens walking into town. If I was lucky I’d be on the steps later to see them walk back. After a couple of years in Cooksbridge near Lewes I returned to Hanover. I’m now in Shoreham by Sea overlooking the River Adur. I love being by the water and I always have the Brighton madness seven minutes away on the train.

Well, I have been writing a series for children’s TV with my pal Justin Fletcher AKA Mr Tumbles, for a long time. We had the set built, then Covid struck. I have also written for BBC’s Doctors. That was fun but very restrictive with budgets for locations and the number of actors that you can use to tell the story. My photography has taken a recent leap forward with an exhibition in the Circle Bar in the Theatre Royal Brighton. I have been taking shots behind the scenes since I started acting and it’s great to be able to show my pictures in that beautiful building. My photography can be seen at iankelseyphotography.co.uk or Instagram @iankelseybehindthescenes The Rise and Fall of Little Voice is at Theatre Royal Brighton from 25-30 April. atgtickets.com/venues/theatreroyal-brighton / 0844 871 7615

73 New rules to come into effect from July…

Barbecues, lanterns and balloons Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Sustainability & Transport (ETS) Committee has agreed to make a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) to stop the use of single-use, disposable barbecues and the release of lanterns and balloons in or on council-owned parks, open spaces and the seafront.

In the consultation, 79.4% of respondents agreed that single-use barbecues should not be used in or on council-owned parks, open spaces and the seafront. 87.4% of respondents agreed that lanterns and balloons should not be released in these areas.

The BRIGHTONIAN APRIL 2022.indd 73

There will be a £100 fine for failure to comply with the PSPO. Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) will be issued by the eight Environmental Enforcement Officers who regularly patrol the city. The Environmental Enforcement Officers will also seek to extinguish or seize the article causing the offence. Proper, stand-alone, non-disposable barbecues can continue to be used on certain beaches, parks and open spaces. The PSPO will be enforced from 1st July 2022, for up to three years. If an extension is required, a further report will be brought to the committee.

GENERAL

A public consultation was carried out last December after complaints from residents about people leaving single-use, often still hot, barbecues on beaches, parks and open spaces. One of the council’s litter bins was set alight, likely from an incorrectly disposed single-use barbecue. The RSPCA has a campaign to End Sky Litter due to the problems balloons and lanterns cause to animals and the National Fire Chiefs Council has highlighted the issues caused by lanterns.

The committee requested a further report outlining alternative provisions, such as permanent communal barbecue pits, that could be provided to allow residents without gardens or outdoor spaces the opportunity to enjoy barbecues.

75 Congratulations to Off The Fence on reaching a great milestone…

Off The Fence celebrates 25 years Portland Road-based charity Off The Fence is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Roy Stannard, Head of Income Generation & Comms, tells us more… What is the charity’s greatest achievement?

What projects is Off The Fence running at the moment? Off The Fence Trust continues to act in a practical and supportive way to rehabilitate the homeless, at risk and disadvantaged communities - helping individuals who are facing crisis situations with little or no support. To this end, Off The Fence operates three projects: Antifreeze, a day centre for the homeless - part of an emergency outreach to rough sleepers; a schools programme for 6-18 year olds; and Gateway, a women’s centre supporting women in crisis. Our mission remains: Resisting poverty. Empowering people. Restoring hope. Are there fewer people sleeping on the streets since the lockdowns? Good question! Sadly not, as the ‘Everyone in’ initiative has come to the end of its funding. Most homeless people don’t sleep on the streets – they find safer, more secluded places. We know where and how to find them. Moving the problem off the streets during lockdown was a short term fix which meant that the issue morphed into social isolation, loneliness and mental illness instead. Lockdown has shown that the prevention of homelessness saves £000s. It costs on average £22k a year to house someone compared with around £4k to assist them into independent living.

Loading the van with food How are you celebrating your silver anniversary? We have our anniversary event in June, a celebration service in the Autumn and are currently planning a major music event with the involvement of significant local artists. In July we will host the official opening of our new Gateway building and extension. A full events calendar can be found on our anniversary web page: www.offthefence.org.uk/25years. Brighton & Hove is one of the strongest communities in the UK because there is a rich seam of compassion for others running through it. That includes your readers.

GENERAL

Off The Fence has been helping the most vulnerable in Brighton & Hove since 1997. In that time we have supported tens of thousands of rough sleepers, thousands of vulnerable women and more than 100,000 school children. We have raised and spent over £9 million to do this. Last year when our Gateway Women’s Centre in Portslade was put up for sale we took the decision to raise the money to purchase and then double it in order to increase its capacity by 50%.

Do you need any volunteers? Whatever people’s skills, experience or motivation, there is a role for you. We are actively seeking volunteers with outreach skills, mental health experience, teaching, admin, events and corporate backgrounds. For more information, visit www.offthefence.org.uk/volunteer
