5 This article is by Kemptown resident Lina Talbot…

What defines Kemptown – and when do we mean Kemp Town? Brighton’s “Latin quarter” is one way of describing Kemptown, reflecting its artistic and literary connections. But many also consider it to be the gay hub. And where, exactly? Certainly one shouldn’t be misled by the local signpost pointing into the sea! The name “Kemp Town” originally belonged to Thomas Read Kemp’s project of 1823 for fashionable housing to the east of central Brighton, namely the grand terraces of Sussex Square, Arundel and Chichester Terrace, and Lewes Crescent. But there are also pockets of late Georgian/ Regency buildings running back to the Steine, not nearly as grand but bearing some features of this period’s architecture: 1.

Pilasters – ornamental pillars with no supportive function.

2.

Porches - decorative with pillars at the front entrance.

3.

Bow windows – often with decorative pediments on the edge of the roof.

4.

Wrought iron railings - on balconies and the borders of the property.

5.

Sash windows divided into small panes.

Already in this area were older buildings, especially close to the Steine: Marine Parade was built up to Lower Rock Gardens, and St James’s Street up to Dorset Gardens. The Regency period added greatly to these, not only housing but also shops, breweries, churches and schools to support the growing numbers now working in this area.

The term Kemptown came into use for this historical extension of Kemp Town, but when and how is unclear. The dominant gay location has to be around St James’s Street, which is not part of Kemp Town, even if it may be considered part of Kemptown. Confusion reigns! Many sources describe Kemptown as starting at Rock Gardens or Bedford Street, omitting St James’s Street entirely. Wiki and Google are exceptions.

KEMPTOWN

Kemp Town or Kemptown?

“The New History of Brighton” places Kemp Town east of Rock Gardens, but includes the Sussex County Hospital, north of Eastern Road, opened in 1828. Wiki/Google chop it out of Kemptown, as well as the northern part of Sussex Square. I prefer the council ward boundary running along Bristol Gardens, which then includes north Sussex Square, as well as Lidl… This continues to be the case with the proposed new Brighton ward of Kemptown and Marina, which would stretch westwards as far as Bedford Street. Brighton College would still be excluded, placed in the Queens Park ward. Does it belong to Kemptown? Based on its creative and social pursuits, yes, but according to its architecture, it’s an outsider! Reviewed by Lina Talbot for local residents

Book to celebrate Kemp Town Bicentennial The official book celebrating the Kemp Town estate’s bicentennial, written by Russell Miller, is now on sale.

KEMPTOWN

Find out more about the Kemp Town estate…

“The Kemp Town Bicentennial Book 18232023” contains more than 100 pages packed with historic and contemporary photographs and tells the story of the estate. It is a strictly limited edition with an initial print run of only 150 copies, priced at £25. Books can be ordered by emailing kte.org.secretary@gmail.com. This extract from the book tells how Thomas Read Kemp conceived the plans for the Kemp Town estate… In 1823, at the age of 41, Thomas Read Kemp was a person of some substance in and around Brighton. He had inherited land from his wealthy father and succeeded him both as Member of Parliament for Lewes and joint Lord of the Manor of Brighton-Lewes. He was heavily involved with local businesses and charities and supported a number of high-profile community events. The Royal Sussex Hospital and St Mary’s Hall, a school for the daughters of impoverished clergymen, were built on land donated by Kemp. Perhaps inspired by the great estates being developed in central London by aristocratic families like the Cavendishes and the Grosvenors, he had also conceived an extraordinarily ambitious plan to build an enormous high-quality residential estate – 250 large houses and mews set around three grand squares – to meet what he hoped would be increasing demand from wealthy families for large summer homes in Brighton, where they could entertain in style and keep servants. It was the age of grand living and lavish entertaining and Kemp probably needed to realise capital from his inheritance to support his lifestyle. He had limited experience of property

development, having built a family home in the north-west of the town and an evangelical chapel in Ship Street, but other ventures were less successful. It was thus, a huge gamble. The 40-acre site Black Rock Farm and adjoining land, part of his inheritance – was not just on the outskirts of the town, but separated from the town by open fields. And Kemp had neither the funds, nor the expertise, nor the experience, to undertake such a project. Fortunately he had married Frances Baring, a daughter of Sir Francis Baring, chairman of the East India Company and the founder of Barings Bank; loans from the Barings family would later be crucial in keeping the project afloat. World Record for Brighton Table Tennis Club A May Day Sunday morning in Brighton and word was out. The place to be was at noon in a quiet (for now) Open Market. By 11am the place was alive with queues of smiling players, table tennis bats in hand. The white and blue doors of the minibus from the Brighton Table Tennis Club opened with a team of volunteers and suddenly there were ping pong tables ready for the snake of participants, once registered, to weave their way around the tables in practice, ready for midday. The event - an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive opponents in a single table tennis rally. Wen Wei Xu, founder director and coach at BTTC was centre stage ready for action.

Wen Wei Xu; photo by Alexis Maryon

The club had tried before, in 2018 at the same venue, but had not secured the record, currently 112 held by Ormeau Table Tennis Club in Belfast. The organiser of the Brighton event and BTTC’s Director, Tim Holtam, said: “We tried to do this three years ago, and got to about 80 or 90, but we didn’t get there. Today we need 115 different people to hit the ball back once and move round the table against Wen Wei. This is Wen Wei’s record; he will be the record holder.” Stewards and official witnesses in place, the attempt started at noon with 130 people lined up to take part. The group reflected the amazing diversity at the club and the excitement and tension was palpable from the start. Even experienced players said they were hopeful to return the shot and a little nervous. The mood that prevailed though was the sense of fun, inclusion and community, both essential characteristics of everything BTTC. People

were kind and generous, courteous and helpful throughout.

Congratulations to Wen Wei Xu of Brighton Table Tennis Club, based in Kemptown…

A few missed shots meant a few rally restarts, and the moment when 102 was achieved was both a celebration and a challenge. Determination took over after slight disappointment and the atmosphere began to build as another rally attempt gathered momentum and excitement. Was this to be the one…? It was. The record was broken and 117 players secured the result. The market exploded with noise at the news and Wen Wei bowed to everyone from the top of the table in pleasure and appreciation. Once the Guinness Book of Records team receives the evidence and confirms the success, Brighton Table Tennis Club and Wen Wei Xu will have made history. Cho - le!

16 News from Green councillor Clare Rainey…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park At the time of writing there are growing concerns among residents about the cost of living, particularly with the sharp increase in fuel and energy prices. Across the city we are working to help residents through increased funding for poorer families. We are currently working on council tax reduction and increased discretionary funding. We are also working with the third sector to help people with food and fuel, and many households will be due to receive a council tax rebate to help with energy bills. If you need help with paying for food or energy please visit: www.brighton-hove. gov.uk/LDSF or phone 01273 293117.

more water, taking the pressure off our water systems and alleviating possible flood risks.

Despite the rising cost of living, Brighton and Hove residents are continuing to offer support to refugees from the Ukraine. At the time of writing 214 residents across the city have signed up to host one or more Ukrainian refugees. Residents in Queens Park ward are among those supporting refugees coming to Brighton by collecting donations of essential items such as bedding, medical supplies and toiletries.

Finally, I am already seeing the positive impact of this year’s ward grant allocation with improvements being made to the ‘passage under the pier’. Donations to this were also made by Regency councillors as the passage links our two wards, and although more work is still needed the passageway is starting to look more attractive and welcoming. I have also contributed to the St James Business Alliance, which is working hard to improve the St James Street area, and to attract more visitors to this unique part of the city.

On a completely different note, I am pleased to report that this spring and summer we are mowing our grass verges less frequently, including those in the ward such as on Ashton Rise. This allows plant species such as cowslips to flourish, which helps pollinating insects and increases biodiversity. Longer grass absorbs

Another positive development is that new covered bike hangars will start being installed across the city this summer, including in Queens Park ward. These are designed to be rented out to residents for a small fee, allowing people without the space to comfortably store a bike in their home to cycle regularly, and helping to prevent cycle theft.

21 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Getting a play area the community wants A couple of months ago I wrote that a consultation on the future look of the play area was being launched, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Friends of Queen’s Park chair. QUEENS PARK

This came about after much collaborative working with Brighton & Hove Cityparks’ dedicated officers. The space is a magnet drawing in the next generation of park lovers, so delivering a playground that inspires the imagination of young minds and instils a love of the area and the park is a vital investment for the future. With this in mind we all felt it was worth taking time to get it right. The data from the consultation is still being crunched but, with more than 350 people taking part, there were some clear messages that jumped out after an initial scan of the results. Here are some of the headlines: Most confirmed that they felt the new scheme should cater for 6 to 12 year-olds with increased accessibility for all The community wants a scheme that looks natural and blends in with the surroundings People said that play equipment should major on using recycled materials with an almost equal number asking for equipment that makes use of wood More than half felt that plants and natural play features were very important As for the equipment, climbing, slides, multi-towers, ropes and nets topped the pops The consultation delivered many other details, all of which will be used to frame the tender brief the Council is developing before inviting contractors to respond. Other considerations will include the sustainability of the scheme and what other community benefits contractors build into their bids. We are less clear how this will play out in terms of when the first phase of the play area will see contractors get to work. With 55 playgrounds in the Council’s cross hairs (some of

which have already been upgraded), our best guess is this may not get into the four-year workplan until early next year. The Council found £147,000 of Section 106 money (that’s contributions from locally approved development schemes to mitigate the disruption to the community, to you and me). It sounds like a large chunk of dosh, but it’ll not be enough to renew the whole of the site. The Friends of Queen’s Park will launch a fundraiser to build up a war chest to complete the job. If any reader has experience and would like to get on board email us at: info@fqpbrighton.net Friends of Queen’s Park

23 An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association Hanover Beer Fest Reunion Event,

Philharmonic Friends Summer Club 2022

7-8th October 2022

If your children love making music and new friends, they will love Philharmonic Friends – Brighton’s most fun and inclusive holiday youth orchestra! We write bespoke parts for each child to match their skill level, so beginners can join with experienced musicians, working as an ensemble to create and perform beautiful music. We offer a dazzling and diverse musical programme in a nurturing and exciting social setting.

As many of you know, the Hanover Beer Festival was an annual highlight, with a great party atmosphere. We are currently putting plans together to hold an event for our local Hanover beer lovers who have missed us over the past couple of years. We missed you too, so watch this space in the August edition or check out our Facebook pages for updates: facebook.com/HanoverBeerFest or facebook. com/hanover.centre/

Yoga for Menopause A non-judgemental, supportive community sharing nourishing yoga practices and holistic tools to hold women positively through this transformation. Going through what used to be termed ominously ‘the change’ can induce feelings of fear and panic, isolation and depression. But what if we could approach this inevitable transitional phase of life with equanimity, supported by community, with laughter, compassion and practical tools to hold us on the journey? We will also welcome visiting experts who support women through menopause, specialising in everything from nutrition, psychology and acupuncture to sexuality, exercise and sleep.

Children receive one-to-one and small-group tuition, as well as the opportunity to work in an orchestral setting. There will be singing and rhythm workshops; plenty of “free” time for games, crafts and outside play; a music-inspired art competition; and there will be a fabulous Grand Finale performance on the last day!

27 Meet a local improv comedy performer…

Hanover person…Simon Goodway What is your background? By trade I’m a freelance illustrator. I moved to Brighton six years ago and needed a hobby to get me out of the house - so I took up improv comedy! After doing a few courses, I was invited to join established troupe Tea & Toast, and also formed a new group with friends from my course. Tea & Toast is still going strong, but the other group drifted apart until only Ben Tucker and I were left. Happily, we worked well as a duo! Tell us more about Scoops… Ben and I were looking for opportunities to perform, and realised other groups were in the same boat, so we started a monthly improv variety night. We’re the house act, opening each show - joined by Ric Stewart, a talented

SWIM BIKE RUN

musician as well as a brilliant improviser, allowing us to incorporate ad-libbed songs! Following us are three other acts, different every month, and an audience jam when anyone can get up on stage to play improv games. Our original venue folded during lockdown, but we’ve found a fantastic new home at the Grand Central, and since our return have featured amazing local acts as well as performers from around the country! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened so far?

HANOVER

Simon Goodway lives in Hanover and is a co-founder of the popular monthly improv comedy show Scoops, which can be found in the Nightingale Room at The Grand Central pub near Brighton Station.

In our April show, the performer Emily Rose (of improvised lounge act Play It Again) stepped off the stage to steal an audience member’s dog, and proceeded to lead it out of the room! Luckily, she brought it back… Who are your own favourite comedians?

I am a Qualified Triathlon Coach, providing coaching services for swimming, cycling, running and strength & conditioning. Call now to arrange your free consultation. Together, we can help you take steps to kick those bad habits, obsessions and addictions. Beginners welcome.

phil@addictedtotriathlon.com www.addictedtotriathlon.com

Unsurprisingly, they’re all improvisers! I adore The Maydays, who do regular Komedia shows, and Do The Thing are a brilliant trio who improvise hilarious musicals. We’ve been lucky enough to feature both groups at Scoops! What do you like to do to relax? I love board games and video games, and recently took up oil painting which is great fun. But the main thing I do to relax is - you’ve guessed it - improv! Scoops is in the Nightingale Room, The Grand Central, Surrey Street, on the first Tuesday of every month at 8pm. Tickets cost £7 at tinyurl. com/scoopsimprov. For more information, follow scoopsimprov on social media.

29 News from the council…

Montreal Arms tile removal On 30 March the council served a temporary stop notice regarding the removal of tiles from the façade of the Montreal Arms in Hanover, after complaints had been received.

The Stop Notice took effect on 27th April 2022 and the Enforcement Notice was due to come into effect on 24th May 2022. Locally listed building The Montreal Arms is a locally listed building. This means that it has been identified as a heritage asset that is important to the local area and its people. The council has planning policies in place to ensure that any changes requiring planning permission are of a high standard compatible with the character of the building. Under current legislation, a temporary notice can only last for 28 days and the council are not then allowed to serve another temporary stop notice. Council officers therefore had to consider whether further, longer-term action should be taken.

Enforcement notice Officers have liaised with colleagues in the council’s legal department and considered information provided by the owner. This included concerns regarding the building’s lintels. In the light of this, the council served an Enforcement Notice together with the stop notice on the removal of the tiles on 21st April. This includes an exception of permitting tiles to be removed to allow for repairs to the lintels. It has been made clear in the notices that this exception is for the minimum number of tiles that can be removed for the purposes of repair to the lintels. The enforcement notice requires these tiles to be reinstated.

HANOVER

With the temporary notice due to expire at the end of April, the council then served an enforcement notice together with a stop notice on the removal of the tiles.

The enforcement notice also requires the reinstatement of glazed ceramic tiles to all elevations where they have been removed or damaged as a consequence of the unauthorised works. The timescale for compliance is one year after the notice takes effect.

31 News from Elaine Hills, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Hanover & Elm Grove councillor news The recent record-breaking temperatures in India have highlighted the urgent need to slash greenhouse gas emissions. Motorised vehicles are a major contributor.

As part of the recent liveable neighbourhood engagement process, consultants mapped out what the pilot might look like, giving residents a chance to comment and add ideas. Some Elm Grove residents were concerned that these sketches lacked detail on improvements to roads bordering the scheme. Elm Grove certainly needs attention. Nine years ago, a plan to improve parking, traffic flow and address pavement parking there did not go ahead, mainly because residents feared losing parking spaces. However, for safety reasons, the council had to stop drivers from parking behind double yellow lines next to junctions, which reduced parking anyway. These problems can be looked at again as part of the liveable neighbourhood scheme. Cllr David Gibson and I have met with residents to discuss crossings, greening, traffic calming measures and addressing pavement parking. Air quality monitors are being put in place too to measure the effects of the pilot on boundary roads.

Whichelo Place. More will follow, with spaces costing roughly £1 per week. Hanover Centre events A neighbourhood car-sharing scheme could benefit people who don’t drive often but need easy car access. This could save money, reduce car numbers and free up public space. I’m outlining how this could work in our area at: What can we do locally to cope with climate change? Caroline Lucas MP will be the event’s headline speaker. (Thursday, 16th June, 7.30-10pm.) Residents can help work up a plan for greener, healthier outdoor spaces at Greening up Hanover, Elm Grove and Tarner (Wednesday, 8th June, 5.30pm-7.30pm). The event, organised by CPRE Sussex, will be facilitated by planning, landscaping and tree planning specialists. For a free ticket, go to: https://hanover_green. eventbrite.co.uk

HANOVER

The Hanover and Tarner Liveable Neighbourhood pilot is an attempt to discourage unnecessary car use and stop rat running. The scheme targets narrow streets in which houses have no front gardens and narrow pavements, making residents there particularly vulnerable to the effects of traffic pollution.

The fun-packed, family-friendly Hanover Social on Sunday 12th June will raise funds for Voices in Exile, a charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Elaine.Hills@brighton-hove.gov.uk

This engagement will inform the scheme’s design, to be considered in a report going to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee this month. If agreed by councillors, a consultation will begin in July, which all residents should receive by post. A prelaunch webinar (date tbc) will explain the process. Residents will be able to discuss the scheme with councillors and council officers, with the first event on Tuesday, 19th July at the Phoenix Gallery, starting at 1pm. The ward’s first batch of secure, covered cycle hangars will soon be installed on Queen’s Park Road, Belgrave Street, Scotland Street and Have a local editorial item? The Queen’s Green Canopy initiative recently announced the network of 70 ancient woodlands and 70 ancient trees across the UK which will form part of the ancient canopy celebrating the Queen’s 70 years of service.

Most of the elm trees in Brighton & Hove were planted by the Victorians and Edwardians; they were popular because they can tolerate thin chalk soil and salty winds. The remaining ‘Preston Twin’ is thought to be the oldest surviving English elm in Europe. The Preston Park Gilded Twin project The Preston Park Gilded Twin is a project by artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, aimed at raising awareness of elm disease. 36 News from Siriol Hugh-Jones, Green councillor for Preston Park…

Preston Park Councillor News The issue currently at the front of many residents’ minds is the cost-of-living crisis. As co-chair of the Housing Committee, I want to improve the energy efficiency of the city’s residential sector. We are already committed to installing more solar panels on our council housing which will help to reduce residents’ bills. In addition, as part of the Greater Brighton Economic Board, the Council has been co-funding research which should enable us to start rolling out a programme to improve the energy efficiency of council homes later this year. Separately, we are developing a scheme to make it more affordable for homeowners to improve their home insulation and start the transition from domestic gas boilers to renewables. One of the most exciting and inspiring elements of my council work currently is the development of the new City Downland Estate Plan. This will set the future vision and policy framework for the management of the 12,500 acres of downland owned by the Council on the outskirts of Brighton & Hove Estate. Residents are invited to view the draft plan and take part in a survey to help complete the process. Two key objectives of the draft plan are to reverse the loss of biodiversity on the estate, and to work towards (and beyond) carbon net zero. The draft plan identifies short, medium and long-term action to support the achievement of these objectives.

The survey and draft plan are available on the City Downland website pages at https://climateconversationsbrighton.uk.engagementhq. com/city-downland-estate-plan and will run for 8 weeks, until 8 July. For a paper copy of the survey, or to receive the survey in another format and/or language, email: citydownlandestateplan@brighton-hove.gov.uk In my ward of Preston Park, the three councillors have this year dedicated our ward budget to the creation of a mural on the back of the velodrome stand in Preston Park. Regular velodrome users St Peter’s Cricket Club, Preston Park Youth Cycling Club and the Brighton Multicultural Women’s Cycle Club (the BMWs) have worked with ward councillors to choose a winner from among the very strong entries received. The successful artists will shortly be running workshops to involve regular park users in the creative process. The final result is intended to celebrate cycling, and sport more generally, as well as the diversity of Brighton & Hove’s community today. To contact me, please write to Siriol.hugh-jones@brighton-hove.gov.uk

39 News from Martlets hospice…

Calendar Girls to raise money for Martlets Martlets was delighted to host the stars of Calendar Girls, the multi-award-winning musical that is coming to the Theatre Royal in Brighton in June, at their showroom for the perfect promotional picture! The brave cast got into the spirit and put the collecting buckets to good use for a photoshoot to show their support for Martlets.

The show opens on Wednesday 22 until Saturday 25 June 2022. Described by the Times as ‘pure gold’, Calendar Girls tickets are available at www.atgtickets.com or through the Theatre Royal Box office on 0844 871 7615.

GENERAL

Theatre company BHOS (Brighton & Hove Operatic Society) has generously supported Martlets over the years and are kindly donating 50% of the Calendar Girls performance profits to the charity. The story was famously made into a movie about the death of a much-loved

husband that prompts a group of ordinary women in a small Yorkshire Women’s Institute to do something extraordinary: produce a nude calendar to raise funds for the local hospital.

41 The organiser of the annual Chattri Memorial Service tells us more about it…

The Chattri Memorial… Davinder Dhillon Davinder Dhillon is a former teacher. He lives in Hove and was awarded an OBE in January for organising a memorial service every June at the Chattri in Patcham, which commemorates all the Indian Army soldiers who died in World War One. soldiers died in Brighton, 53 were Hindus and Sikhs and 19 were Muslims. The Hindus and Sikhs were cremated at the Chattri according to their religious rites and the Muslims were buried near a mosque in Woking.

During World War One, when Germany invaded Belgium, Britain had no choice but to declare war on Germany due to a treaty to defend Belgium against any invaders. However, Britain realised very early on that they didn’t have enough troops. The Indian troops were on their way to Mesopotamia to protect British oil interests but due to the large casualties suffered by the British Expedition Forces in Europe, the Indian troops were diverted to Marseilles. The troops were quickly transported to the Western Front and thrown into battle with little training in modern weaponry. Due to the expansion of the war and with a finite number of men available to fight at the start of the war, it was vital that injured troops were given adequate medical care to enable them to fight again. A decision was then made by the British Army to send injured Indian troops to England. The troops ended up in Brighton, where the Royal Pavilion, the Work House on Elm Grove, (renamed the Kitchener Military Hospital, now the General Hospital) and York Place School, were converted into military hospitals. Some 12,000 Indian soldiers passed through Brighton. A total of 72

When did you start to organise an annual service? I started organising the Chattri Service in 2000. What will be happening at the Chattri this June?

GENERAL

How did the Chattri come to be a memorial for Indian soldiers?

In honour of their sacrifices and contribution, the Chattri was built in 1921 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales in the same year.

The Chattri Service is an open commemoration. It will include prayers, wreath laying, the Last Post, and short speeches by the Vice-Lord Lieutenant and by the High Commissioner of India or her representative. The ceremony will have a mixture of religious and military elements. Attendees will include the Mayor, the High Sheriff and other civic leaders and British and Indian Army representatives. Some 300 attendees are expected. Was your own family involved in World War One? My grandfather was an interpreter in the war and survived. My great-uncle was killed in action in Mesopotamia. You are also a Deputy Lieutenant of East Sussex. What does that role involve? Representing the Lord Lieutenant in their absence, eg at Citizen Ceremonies; official events such as Armed Forces Day; opening exhibitions, fetes etc; helping the LL assess individuals and organisations for honours. This year’s service is on Sunday 12th June at 2.30pm at The Chattri, Standean Lane, Brighton BN1 8ZB. For more information, visit www.chattri.org

47 Self-defence classes on the seafront…

Cross Krav Maga at Yellowave Steve Jenkinson teaches Cross Krav Maga self-defence and fitness at Yellowave Beach Sports on Madeira Drive. He tells us more about his classes… What is Cross Krav Maga?

Can anyone learn it? Our classes teach 16-65 years old. If you are capable of freely moving around and generally fit and able, we can teach you. How can Cross Krav Maga help us?

GENERAL

It is a self-defence survival system that is based on Krav Maga which is designed to encourage the individual to use what works for them. We are all different in our size, strength, speed and agility. Cross Krav Maga is designed to help even the odds between you and your attacker; it teaches key survival skills and how to react if attacked by utilising flinch responses, and it will rapidly develop an awareness of what self-defence works and what doesn’t. We look on the perspective that will it work for me if I was a woman of eight stone. This way we are not learning to fight force with force, as there is always someone stronger than you; we use mindset, redirection and attacking the attacker to deal with what threat confronts us, and to ideally escape and get home safe.

Cross Krav Maga can help with your confidence and fitness, lose weight, gain strength and learn skills that could one day save you or your loved ones from an attacker. Tell us more about your classes… Our classes are aimed at teaching you a set of fundamentals and principles that have been tried and tested through pressure tests with trained instructors. We are constantly looking at faster and better ways to teach in order to allow this knowledge to become second nature to the student. We have mixed classes - young, old, male and female from all sorts of backgrounds and jobs like the police, emergency services, military, security, NHS staff as well as civilians. Cross Krav Maga welcomes anyone to join who wishes to learn how to defend themselves; all we ask for is your commitment. With regular training, you will become faster and the system will flow naturally. For more information, visit crosskravmaga.co.uk, email Brighton@CrossKravMaga.co.uk or phone 07714 162185. 49 Club hosting Croquet World Championship offers FREE croquet lessons…

Sussex County Croquet Club As the weather warms up, Sussex County Croquet Club (SCCC) is offering free ‘have a go’ sessions just months before it hosts the 2022 Golf Croquet World Championship from 30th July to 7th August. The club’s 11 pristine lawns are open every day but for the first time it is offering an evening session from 5pm till dusk on Tuesdays throughout the summer. “Croquet is a challenging and tactical sport. We think people will be surprised by how much fun they can have,” says Club Chairman Clive Hayton.

Founded in 1847 and at the present five-acre site in Southwick since 1901, SCCC is one of the best kept secrets in Sussex and is home to The Croquet Academy, regarded as the croquet world’s leading coaching facility. In a footnote to the long history of the club, a historic trophy was recently returned to the club after almost a century. The club was contacted by Mr Andy Lambert, who was clearing his mother’s house in Edenbridge after she moved to a nursing home when he came across an SCCC trophy originally presented to the club in 1909. The winners included several well-known croquet players of the time and the last engraved winner was Andy’s great-grand-uncle, Leonard Arthur Flude Willan, who won the trophy in August 1921 and 1922. Andy told Clive Hayton: “Leonard died in 1931 aged just 54. I like to think that he may have won the trophy for a third time in April 1926 and may have kept it for good as was sometimes the practice. The trophy

The club has a licensed bar and there’s nothing finer than a game or two of croquet followed by a drink from the bar on a summer evening! Free have-a-go sessions are available at other times by arrangement. Coming along to have a go and learn some of the rules also means that you will be well equipped to watch some very exciting play when the World Championship comes to Southwick in the summer.

must have passed down to my late father. After searching for the Sussex County Croquet Club online, it was an easy decision then to try and reunite the trophy with the club. It has been a great pleasure to have been in touch with Clive to arrange its return.” We are very grateful to Andy for taking the time to research this fascinating story and donating the cup to our club. 51 City news…

Trial Park & Ride cancelled A trial park and ride scheme in Mill Road has been cancelled. Mill Road was to have been used by Brighton & Hove Buses for a trial scheme from June to September 2022, which would have operated in a similar way to the scheme used by Brighton & Hove Albion on match days.

“Mill Road is within the South Downs National Park. So it would always have been contingent on planning and highways approval from the South Downs National Park Authority. Our understanding is that approval was unlikely due to their concerns about the impact on the National Park. The proposal also required a number of actions from the National Highways to meet the start of any trial, including installing relevant signage on the A23 and A27 in time.

the city. It also offered a chance to better understand the implications of park and ride schemes on travel into the city, air pollution, sustainability, traffic management and car parking capacity. “If the bus company or any other transport company wishes to propose an amended or alternative scheme, our Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee will of course consider it in the normal way.”

“We felt the scheme would have given the city the opportunity to assess the impact park and ride may have on car use and any changes in uptake of public transport to arrive in

GENERAL

A Brighton & Hove City Council spokesperson said: “The planned trial park and ride scheme we supported at Mill Road was not a council scheme – it was put forward by Brighton & Hove Bus Company. The bus company has advised us that it is no longer pursuing its proposal.

53 A science comedy show coming to the Rotunda Theatre in Regency Square…

Artificial Intelligence Improvisation Award-winning theatre troupe Improbotics are performing “Artificial Intelligence Improvisation”, a science comedy show, on 2-5 June at the Rotunda Theatre in Regency Square as part of Brighton Fringe. Piotr Mirowski tells us more… How long have you been improvising with artificial intelligence? We started improvising with AI back in 2016. It was a monumental disaster and a perfect learning opportunity! “We” at the beginning was Piotr Mirowski and Kory Mathewson (both researchers in AI). We met online and started a beautiful collaboration. Improbotics grew into a large and diverse cast of people who all love to tinker with technology!

GENERAL

Artificial Intelligence Improvisation is an established act that we have brought to Brighton since 2017, each time in a radically improved version! After all, that is the point of both improv and of artificial intelligence: taking risks and learning from past mistakes… What is the concept of the show? A cast of seven human actors and one small robot called A.L.Ex improvise both rapid-fire comedic and longer narrative scenes. The robot performer uses AI to narrate scenes played by humans, and move it forward in unexpected directions. It generates the lines for some of the improvisers, and whispers them (via headphones) into their ears: those improvisers can only say whatever the computer instructs them to say! And finally, the robot performer uses AI to generate artwork that depends on suggestions and on what is going on, to inspire the human performers. The humans make up emotionally grounded, and at times slightly absurd, stories that are told collaboratively by humans and machines. What can we learn from this? You will get to see state-of-the-art AI used on stage: chatbots that can give seemingly intelligent responses or narrate mostly coherent stories, and an AI that can “paint” in a few seconds a new painting in the style of Van Gogh. We have a Turing Test game where the audience needs to guess which improviser is controlled by the robot and which ones are “merely” using

their free will: it is much harder than you think! Most importantly, you will see how improvisers can have fun, collaborate and get inspired with machines. We had a fantastic ***** review at Brighton Fringe 2019 by the Phoenix Remix: “If I had seen such a show as a kid, I would have paid more attention to science class.” What is the most difficult thing about working with humans? We asked A.L.Ex (the robot’s name is also an acronym for Artificial Language Experiment) the question. This is – unedited – the response generated by AI: “I would say the most difficult thing about working with humans is trying to understand them. They are very unpredictable and often do things that don’t make any sense. It can be frustrating trying to figure out why they do the things they do, but that’s what makes working with them so interesting.” Tickets (£12) from brightonfringe.org

55 A celebration of women’s football…

Goal Power! This summer’s big exhibition at Brighton Museum is “Goal Power! Women’s Football 1894-2022”. It will run from 18 June to 25 September, showcasing women’s football. The exhibition will coincide with the UK hosting the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 (6-31 July), with Brighton & Hove as one of the nine host cities. Goal Power will look at the development of women’s football over the last century. You can share in stories of resistance and perseverance from women who dedicated their lives to the beautiful game, whose love for football means they have trailblazed the way for women and girls today - from the feminist players of 1894 and the war worker footballers of the First World War to those who defied the Football Association to play and those who have changed the Football Association from within. GENERAL

Brighton & Hove Albion WFC player Victoria Williams and Team Manager Hope Powell will be sharing personal objects and stories as part of the Goal Power! Exhibition, including boots, photographs and shirts.

A free UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Roadshow will be visiting Hove Lawns on Saturday 25 June (11am-5pm). It will showcase the best of football, fitness and music, providing families, fans and those that are yet to experience football with the opportunity to get involved in an unmissable tournament.

There will also be lots of exciting opportunities to meet legends from the women’s game, take part in interactive challenges and find out more about getting involved in grassroots football, the tournament, and how to purchase tickets.

The Roadshow is supported by the BBC and is part of a wider drive to introduce new fans to the women’s game to create a lasting legacy for women’s football. The free Roadshow will offer an introduction to football, with a chance to learn new football skills and tricks as well as try matchday presenting and interviewing in a special TV studio. Featuring live music from local artists and a showpiece football pitch, alongside the opportunity to get a picture with the trophy itself, each event will provide a variety of fun for all the family. 57 Brighton Early Music Festival returns to Queen’s Park this summer…

Brighton Early Music Festival After a pilot Midsummer Season of outdoor events in 2021, Brighton Early Music Festival is returning to Queen’s Park this June with a series of events at Royal Spa on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2022, preceded by two concerts in St Bartholomew’s Church on Friday 24 June.

For those who prefer to enjoy their music indoors, the Midsummer weekend kicks off with two concerts in the beautiful setting of St Bartholomew’s Church, near Brighton Station. Friday 24 June offers contemplative programmes from early baroque specialists In Echo (7.30pm) and late night polyphony from BREMF Consort of Voices (9pm). Tickets for BREMF Midsummer Season are now on general sale, with half price tickets for under-25s and certain other groups, and children under 12 go free. The late night polyphony event as well as a family concert in Whitehawk are operating on a “pay what you can” basis.

See www.bremf.org.uk/whats-on for full programme details and tickets. Brighton Early Music Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and the Midsummer Season will be followed by more events in October and December 2022.

GENERAL

BREMF Midsummer Season at Royal Spa sees six events taking place over the weekend of 25/26 June. Programmes range from family puppet show Endo the Earthworm from Rust & Stardust productions (Saturday 11am) and an Indian Music & Dance workshop (Sunday 12 noon); toe-tapping music from both medieval musicians Joglaresa (Saturday 5pm) and folk band Hope Cove (Saturday 8pm); The Daksha Yagna - a performance of Indian classical music & Kathak dance (Sunday 3pm) and an event to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with music from the reigns of our two queen Elizabeths featuring the musicians of Fair Oriana (Sunday 6pm). Audience members are asked to bring their own seating and invited to bring a picnic to enjoy. There will be loos and a bar on site to give the events a festival atmosphere.

Cathy Boyes, BREMF Festival Producer, says: “Although the 2021 season was originally made necessary because of Covid restrictions in place at the time, it was a huge success and audiences really embraced the idea of sitting outdoors with a picnic to enjoy some fabulous music. The classical portico which is all that remains of the 1824 Royal Spa complex provides an atmospheric backdrop for the events, as well as a little cover in the case of rain! We’re excited to be returning to this brilliant venue in 2022 with a packed weekend of concerts and workshops.”

FRI 24 – SUN 26 JUNE 2022 Celebrate Midsummer with indoor and outdoor events featuring medieval fun from Joglaresa; Jubilee celebrations with Fair Oriana; folk and bluegrass; family events; Indian music & dance and more. 59 A gala concert in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support…

A Celebration of Tchaikovsky The acute crisis in cancer care caused by Covid has left the main charity offering cancer support in urgent need of additional funding. Brighton musicians have decided to do something about it.

Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Eugene Onegin, Piano Concerto No 1, Overture Romeo and Juliet, Violin Concerto and all six symphonies.

The concert will relate the composer’s extraordinary life story, with the role of Tchaikovsky played by actor Jamie Martin and BBC TV South Today presenter Sally Taylor as interlocutor.

The Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton offers support for local people facing the toughest fight of their lives. Its services include information, complementary therapies, physical activities and practical support.

Interlacing the dialogue, distinguished soloists and Sussex Symphony Orchestra, led by musical director Mark Andrew James, will perform a selection of Tchaikovsky’s most glorious compositions, including excerpts from

The concert is at Brighton Dome at 3pm on Sunday July 10. Tickets, priced from £10 to £32.50, are on sale at the Dome Box Office, by phone on 01273 709709 or online at brightondome.org.

GENERAL

On Sunday July 10, Sussex Symphony Orchestra and distinguished soloists will stage a charity gala concert at Brighton Dome entitled A Celebration of Tchaikovsky and will donate all the profits to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The UK’s first major city trail running event is coming to Brighton & Hove…

Brighton Trail Weekend Grounded Events, the team behind the Brighton Marathon Weekend, are staging the first ever Brighton Trail Weekend on 26 June. The event will incorporate a Trail Marathon, along with 10k and Mini Mile events taking place in Stanmer Park. The Trail Marathon will start on Madeira Drive, in the same place as the Brighton Marathon, but will finish in Stanmer Park. The route goes through the Sussex countryside and South Downs National Park, including a loop around Ditchling Beacon, where organisers are planning a cheer zone.

61 An exhibition now on at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery…

The Jam Cover Stars In 1979, 12-year-old Den Davis went to see The Jam play at Manchester Apollo and his world changed forever. A few months later, when Den started a Sunday morning paper round, he struck a deal with the shop. They saved every magazine and paper that had the mere mention of The Jam on them, and Den delivered the papers. So began the start of his journey to collecting anything and everything about the band fronted by Paul Weller, amassing the largest collection of vinyl and memorabilia in the world.

It shows 75 original magazine covers from when the band topped the charts to their last

ever concert at the Brighton Centre in 1982. Magazines from all corners of the globe will be on display. A selection of Den Davis’s favourite items of memorabilia including ticket stubs and badges will also be on show. Rick Buckler’s iconic ‘Great White’ Premier drum kit used on many tours and videos will take centre stage. Never before shown in previous exhibitions is Paul Weller’s 1977 stage suit and Buckle Gibson Jam shoes from the “In The City” period.

GENERAL

It’s now 45 years since The Jam first graced the front cover of the NME in May 1977 and this previously unseen exhibition curated by superfan Den is a visual journey through the six years when The Jam were one of the biggest bands in the world.

Den has always been involved in music; as a bass player, he manages bands and owns a residential recording studio in Manchester. Den said: “It’s 40 years this year since The Jam played their last ever show at The Brighton Centre and little did I know that the band would leave such a legacy. They are still so relevant today and I hope the exhibition will bring their fans all back together here in Brighton as well as introduce the band to a host of new fans. 62 News from the council…

Supporting starlings to thrive 100 starling nesting boxes, generously gifted by artist Lou McCurdy, are being installed on council-owned buildings and open spaces across Brighton & Hove. Five will take pride of place in the Royal Pavilion garden to invite starlings to nest in the heart of the city once again. The nesting boxes were crafted as part of the thought-provoking Undercurrents exhibition held at Phoenix Art Space earlier in the year. The sight of starlings flocking together and swooping across the sky in different patterns – known as a murmuration – has become a familiar sight in Brighton & Hove, but over the last two decades numbers have drastically plummeted, with local and national populations dropping by up to 90%. Starlings are struggling mostly due to habitat loss including suitable nesting sites and because the insects that they depend on for most of their diet are also in decline. The other nesting boxes are being put on school buildings and in open spaces run by communities.

New Changing Places Toilets Brighton & Hove City Council have received a £330,000 grant to increase Changing Places Toilets (CPTs) in the city. Unlike standard accessible toilets, CPTs have an adult changing bench and hoist facilities as well as extra space for carers. On top of this grant, the council are contributing another £94,500, totalling £424,500. This funding will help to provide more public toilet facilities to meet the needs of disabled people, in particular, those with profound and multiple learning disabilities and/or other physical disabilities, who may need the assistance of one or two carers. The grant is part of a programme to increase the availability of CPT facilities across England and it will allow the council to increase the number of CPTs in the city to eight. This first round of funding will help to provide new CPT facilities in The Ledward Centre (Jubilee Street), Stanmer Park and Wish Park. The council are also hoping to install a CPT at St

Ann’s Well Gardens later on in 2023/24, when the facilities there are refurbished. A second round of grant applications is anticipated later this year. You can currently find CPTs at Shelter Hall, The Colonnade, The Level and The Brighton Centre. There are others throughout the city that are managed externally to the council.

Refugee Week…20-26 June GENERAL

Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival, founded in 1998, celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. 2022’s theme for Refugee Week is Healing. Healing means recovering from a painful experience or situation, so that we can continue to live. In 2020, Brighton & Hove Libraries became the second library service in the country to be awarded Library of Sanctuary status and this year they have received funding to commission two guest programmers for Refugee Week with lived experience of seeking sanctuary. Brighton & Hove Libraries are also working with Best Foot Music on a free global music event on Saturday 25th June (12-4pm) at Jubilee Library, which will be an exciting finale to Refugee Week 2022. Performers include Polina Shepherd and the Brighton & Hove Yiddish Choir; Bashir Al Gamar, a songwriter and poet originally from Sudan; Jamal & Alaa, a Sussex-based Syrian and Arabic folk duo; and Kurdish/Alevi musician Suna Alan and her band. There will be a finger food buffet of tasty food from Syria, Sudan and Ethiopia. Sanctuary on Sea will be staging a fabulous show, “Mohand & Peter”, for Refugee Week. In a celebration of Sudan, Mohand and Peter will travel everywhere and anywhere in the blink of an eye, with humour and visual poetry, jumping from one character to another, including Omar alBashir, Mohand’s 450 cousins and a lazy camel.

A number of other organisations in the city will also be putting on events and activities, which will be promoted on social media, the council’s website and Sanctuary on Sea’s website. 65 We sent a couple of people along to do a NEW two-day course in bicycle mechanics with Devils Bykes…

The mysteries of the bicycle revealed!

Getting to grips with adjusting the brakes!

Matt supervising the initial steps of indexing the gears.

During the two-day course I learnt about all the things that I knew I didn’t know about but had always wanted to understand! We took apart every part of a bicycle and reassembled it and in the process learnt about such mysterious things as the bottom bracket, the head set and the drive train. Not to mention the front and rear mech and all the parts in between!

Matt says: “I want to encourage people to understand more about their bikes and teach them to tackle some routine maintenance and repair jobs for themselves. My aim is to demystify and give people enough confidence to take on fixes at home or even on the roadside. I’ve always tinkered with my own bikes, but I didn’t realise how little I knew until I took formal training. I’m really keen to share tips, tricks and techniques to give a fast track to better understanding how bikes work so that they can fully enjoy riding them.”

I can now adjust my own gears and set my brakes and I can detach and clean my chain and all sorts of other things besides. To many this might not sound amazingly exciting but to those of you who fall into the same bracket as I did this whole process was like a form of therapy! It was incredibly therapeutic to replace areas of mystery and confusion with understanding and clarity. Matt delivers the course in a very relaxed and friendly way and is very patient with even the most ridiculous of questions. It is good fun and many a chuckle was shared! The groups are small and this allows Matt to spend the time with each person as needed to ensure that no confusions are left behind.

GENERAL

If like me you are a keen cyclist who has enjoyed riding a bike for years, but as soon as the slightest thing goes wrong with your trusty steed you have to get it loaded into the back of the car and off to the bike shop to get fixed, then this my friend is the course for you!

So, in summary, this is a great step towards understanding your bicycle and gives you a great foundation on which to become a confident and competent home bike mechanic. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who falls into the category of cyclist I fell into up to a couple of weeks ago! If you are interested in attending one of Matt’s courses then please get in touch and Matt can discuss with you in more detail what is involved. 67 A tribute to the former Honorary Secretary of the Brighton Society…

Selma Montford 1934 – 2022 On Easter Monday, Selma died peacefully at her home in the presence of her family. Despite having reluctantly stepped down from her position as Hon. Sec. of the Brighton Society in 2017 because of deteriorating health, her passion for Brighton and Hove was unwavering. She is survived by her husband, Adrian, their four children and four grandchildren. In 2006, Selma was awarded an MBE “For services to Urban Conservation in Brighton and Hove”. Of course this was a tremendous accolade. Yet there’s so much more to say about her life and work than is explicit in this Buckingham Palace citation.

The immediate objective of the Brighton Society was to overturn the proposed Brighton Station development, which would have entailed demolition of much of the existing structure. Fortunately, the campaign was successful. However, the Society’s remit extended well beyond conservation of the best historic buildings; it was to be an umbrella amenity society for Brighton and Hove, concerned with all aspects of urban design. Selma’s social conscience, energy and tenacity were undoubtedly enriched by a unique combination of early experiences and talents. She was, for a start, the child of two social reformers. As Acting Colonial Secretary in mid-1930s Trinidad, her father paid a high price for advocating improved conditions for the labouring poor. And in December 1938, Selma’s mother masterminded the very first Kindertransport, successfully accompanying 162 children to foster parents in the UK. Defining herself as “a visual kind of person”, Selma began campaigning against ugly buildings in the 1950s when living in London. Equally, she had a flair for analysing precisely what constituted good building design. Such skills were undoubtedly honed through training at three art schools. The Birdcage Bandstand was

The Brighton Society was launched by Selma and John Morley, then Director of the Royal Pavilion, Art Gallery and Museums, in 1973, the same year they started the Preston Society. Selma stood at the helm of both organisations for nearly 43 years.

the Brighton Society’s logo from its inception and it’s to a large extent down to Selma that this beautiful structure escaped demolition. As a prodigious writer and publisher, Selma’s output included over 20 books on the history of Brighton, many of them collaborations. A keen environmental educator, too, Selma was the principal force behind the establishment of the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre and its Director. Particularly important to Selma was her work with children, which resulted in four ‘Urban Detective’ books. These aimed to inspire children to explore, observe and analyse what they saw around them in the urban environment. Springing to mind as I reflect upon the weight Selma gave to this aspect of her work is the question, “How many young people today could analyse and verbalise precisely why they find urban graffiti pleasing?” Ninka Willcock You can read the full tribute at www.brighton-society.org.uk/selma-hope-montford-1934-2022

The magazines are A5 in size and each publication is distributed to 12000 homes and businesses.
