Friends of Stoneham Park It was with much sorrow, and a little anger, that I read Simon Baxendale’s article in last month’s Hovarian (The destruction of a hedge) reporting the apparent error by the council’s parks’ department in grubbing up a young hedgerow planted by the Friends of Three Cornered Copse over on Dyke Road Avenue. Reading stuff like this makes a mockery of the hard work that unpaid volunteers put in to improve their neighbourhoods. Hopefully, the misunderstanding there will soon be put right. In Stoneham Park, meanwhile, the new multi-use games area was finished last month with the laying of pitch markings for basketball and football games. All that now remains is for the new basketball backboard we had installed early last year to be returned to the park. The new games area has now created space to the south which is screaming out for something to grace it. What should it be? An outdoor gym? A skate ramp? A mini cycle track? Or something else? Please email us with your suggestions which we can put to the council in due course.

We are still on the hunt for more volunteers to help water the new trees (assuming they are planted and actually stay in the ground) for the fledgling nature trail that I mentioned last month. The plan is to have a rota for the spring and summer months with everybody each spending half an hour a month ensuring the new trees are hydrated. Please get in touch if you would like to help. Also, we are on the look-out for some new people to help with the administrative work on the committee. One particularly exciting role is to maintain and develop our website, a task that would surely suit a young person looking for a future career in IT or marketing. If you know just the person, please get in touch.

Finally, an old friend returned to Stoneham Park. Graffiti artist ‘Parky’ has been back after a four-year absence and has painted a wonderful fly-fishing frog on our kick wall. It’s fantastic to see that our tradition of attracting talented mural artists continues. Until next time, keep smiling! Richard Hearnden info@friendsofstonehampark.uk www.friendsofstonehampark.uk

Club of Sanctuary On 5th February Nam Yang Brighton accepted its official award as a Club of Sanctuary for refugees, asylum seekers and forced migrants. Members of Sanctuary on Sea presented Nam Yang with their award at Hove Methodist Church in Portland Road. Nam Yang are the first martial arts club in the UK to receive this award. They have been teaching martial arts and combat sports locally since 1999 and since 2011 have been operating at their full-time centre off the Lewes Road in Brighton. Most recently they have opened a second location in Hove as part of Hove Methodist Church’s community hub. Nam Yang teach traditional martial arts, including mindfulness and meditation techniques, as well as combat sports, including kung fu, kickboxing, Savate kickboxing, lion and dragon dance, chi gong and Tai Chi.

The aim at Nam Yang has always been to embrace all the members of the local community and provide classes that are suitable for everyone and anyone, all ages and backgrounds, people with disabilities, refugees and local community groups. They offer a sliding scale fee system for people on low incomes, as well as free workshops and demonstrations for schools and community hubs and discounted memberships to students and service staff (NHS, Fire, Police). With the increase of refugees, asylum seekers, forced migrants and victims of modern-day slavery arriving in Brighton, Nam Yang have been working hard with local groups to give these people a safe and inclusive space to train in martial arts while making friends and building networks.

Can you help Food & Friendship lunch club?

Lunch club seek a new sponsor Food and Friendship is a local charity based at Hove Methodist Church. We aim to address loneliness amongst older people and adults with learning disabilities with twice-weekly friendly low-cost lunch clubs. During the pandemic we delivered over 7000 hot lunches to isolated people across the city. Now that we have re-opened for sit-down meals we are receiving lots of referrals for new guests, some of whom were hit hard during the pandemic by bereavement, social isolation and poverty.

During the pandemic we delivered over 7000 hot lunches to isolated people across the city. Now that we have re-opened for sit-down meals we are receiving lots of referrals for new guests... We use food donated by FareShare and UK Harvest which we turn into a 3 course meal on Tuesdays for around 70 people and 2 courses on Thursdays for around 40. We sometimes scratch our heads to work out what to cook as the donations can be anything from 20 kilos of radishes to 40 litres of almond milk. We recently received a large quantity of smoked salmon which was a huge treat for our guests. We have a large and wonderful volunteer team of all ages and backgrounds who are reliable, hard-working and fun. We hire two buses from Brighton and Hove Community Transport collecting people with restricted mobility from Hove, Portslade, Mile Oak and Hangleton who can’t access public transport. The drivers Paul and Mike are an integral part of the lunch club family. We fundraise to keep costs low so were delighted to be approached in 2018 by Bungards funeral directors who offered to

sponsor us. For every post-funeral questionnaire completed Bungards donated £5 to us. Richard, Ben and Zoe also volunteered every month and donated gifts for our raffle and Christmas. We absolutely loved working with them. This year, we have been equally lucky to be sponsored by Kingsway Care. Olly and his team have been fantastic and have donated entertaining staff member Dave every Thursday for a few hours. They also make a contribution every month towards our food costs and have organised post-lunch entertainment. We are now seeking a new local sponsor who shares our values. If your business is interested in helping people to feel connected to their community we’d love to hear from you. We can offer fun and rewarding practical volunteer placements for staff that are very different to an office working environment. We are very much open to creative suggestions for how a partnership might benefit all concerned. Please contact Caroline Henderson at cookingcaroline@outlook.com for more info.

10 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

Westbourne Councillor News There’s so much going on in our area that we hardly know where to begin! Public consultation with the council officers running the Kingsway-to-the-Sea regeneration of the Western Esplanade remains strong and active so we hope to be able to show local residents more detailed plans soon. The West Hove Seafront Action Group and other community groups are all actively involved in the process with us as your councillors, and the architects working on landscaping plans are incorporating the feedback into their design. It’s an exciting time. Unfortunately, the seafront tennis courts on Kingsway cannot wait until the regeneration begins – the surfaces are in too much of a dangerous state. The council surprised us all by closing them in February and we were as upset as the tennis club members and local residents that this came out of the blue after years of trying to get the courts resurfaced. So we are working with the club to fundraise money to get the courts back in action and we have asked the council to create a plan to get them open again for Easter. If you’d like to help and donate there is a fundraising page at https:// gofundme/c5e37a21. Even if you can only donate £1 all amounts are welcome – please help us so we do not lose this facility. Our drive to make travel more environmentally friendly continues and so we are delighted to announce that the Car Club now have electric cars as part of their car share programme in the city. We are also contributing to the plans the council are drawing up on extending the seafront cycle lane to Kingsway A259 towards Portslade. We understand that there is anxiety in the community regarding the impact this will have on pedestrians and car travel, however. For example, walking south from Poets Corner to the beach will potentially become more complicated because of the additional lanes to navigate and so we are hoping to have more pedestrian crossings in the plans. We are also worried about west-travelling traffic turning right and causing long traffic jams and so we are meeting with community forums and local groups to hear their thoughts.

We are also looking ahead to better weather and the summer, which means we are talking already about public toilets on Hove seafront. The portaloos last year made things better, but we recognise this isn’t an ideal solution. So we have proposed £15,000 be spent on the toilets by Rockwater to bring them out of the Victorian era and into the 21st century! Chris and Carmen

Jewellery exhibition at Hove Museum

Rockwater shacks to stay for three more years

An exhibition celebrating the fun, quirky and anarchic British jewellery brand, Tatty Devine, opens at Hove Museum & Art Gallery, New Church Road, on 7th March.

Rockwater beach bar, on the Western Esplanade, have received permission to retain their six timber beach-hutstyle kiosks, or shacks, for another three years.

Tatty Devine’s statement jewellery is always ahead of the curve. It tells stories and generates conversation. Founders Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine set up a market stall in Spitalfields Market in the mid-1990s. Together they challenged jewellery conventions and invested in a laser cutting machine, going on to create personality-packed jewellery much loved and still culturally relevant 20 years on.

The shacks are used to sell food and drinks and were introduced during Covid-19 restrictions, while the main building was being refurbished and extended. They were granted a temporary permission which expired in December 2021. Five objections were received to the latest planning application, with one letter of support. A council report said: “It is considered that the huts do serve to provide positive functions to the area and a three-year permission would not result in significant harm to the area.” The report advised, however, that a further extension was unlikely to be agreed.

“Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine” features over 100 pieces from the past 20 years, from the early leather cuffs and piano belts to giant two-metre versions of their “greatest hits” including a lobster, their magpies and a huge banana, alongside The council’s Planning Committee, sketchbooks, ephemera and two new films. meeting on 2nd February, approved the The exhibition runs until 4 September 2022 extension of planning permission by five votes to one. West Hove Forum... proposed A259 improvements At our last meeting on 26th January, we were joined by council officers dealing with the project for changes to the A259. The objective of the changes is for road space to be reallocated to support safe, active and sustainable travel and the issue under discussion in the meeting was whether the A259 proposals contribute to that objective. The city has a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and also needs to comply with new government guidance that new cycle lanes should be at least 2m wide (to allow for parents cycling with children and for adapted cycles for disabled people).

17 An update from the local group working on improving the West Hove seafront…

The West Hove Seafront Action Group (WHSAG) has established an innovative monthly cycle of progress meetings with the Council team developing the Kingsway to the Sea (KTTS) regeneration project. The WHSAG Committee sends agenda items for a meeting on the second Tuesday of each month, and then reports to the full stakeholders group the following Thursday, so they can share updates with their members. At the February meeting the landscape design consultants outlined their evolving ideas for a linear park from the “Zippo lawn” to the Lagoon. It was agreed that this early work could be shared with stakeholder organizations, including residents’ associations, via social media, on the clear understanding that no decisions have been made. The Council team is having ongoing discussions with all existing user groups – tennis, bowls and croquet clubs and Friends of Hove Lagoon. Specialist sports consultants are providing advice about new forms of outdoor recreation, such as a pump track and skate park. WHSAG continues to stress the importance of quiet garden areas linked by a fully accessible walkway through the park which will be more sheltered than the promenade. The meeting also reviewed the key stages of the work needed for the Council Policy and Resources Committee to approve a design in July, as the basis for a planning application in September. This timetable is essential to meet the government’s project completion deadline of March 31st 2024. At the March meeting the Council team will share their initial views on how to combine existing and new uses in an outline design for the whole park. The team have agreed to a WHSAG proposal for an

April public meeting for local residents to comment on the emerging draft proposals. This will be an opportunity to debate key issues including: • the range of new uses needed alongside the continuation of existing users in order to meet the needs of different section of the local community; • the need for the project to be ‘cost neutral’ – income-generating uses will have to provide the Council with revenue for the proper maintenance of the new linear park; • the proposed second cycle lane along Kingsway must take account of the major increase in the number of pedestrians crossing the road to use the improved recreational facilities – more light-controlled crossings will be needed which give pedestrians priority. After many years of neglect the local community is now engaging - stage by stage - in an intensive two-year regeneration process! The development site at 239-243 Kingsway, between Braemore Road and Berriedale Avenue, has been bought by the developers of Aurum (on the corner of Sackville Gardens) and the development is to be known as Argentum. They have permission to build 37 apartments, which the developers say will enjoy unobstructed sea views from Seaford to Worthing and out across the English Channel.

There is no affordable housing, but the developers, Cayuga Homes, will pay £350,000 in CIL payments and £40,000 in Section 106 payments. Demolition of the houses was due to take place at the end of February.

21 Meet Jéan Seevaraj, who is now taking Sunday services at St Philip’s Church…

Jéan Seevaraj and his wife Nicola are the lead pastors at South City Church, who are now running 11am Sunday services at St Philip’s Church in New Church Road, having previously been based in Portslade. We asked Jéan about the move… How did South City Church come to move to St Philip’s? South City Church has been looking for a more permanent venue in the Hove area for a number of years. We have a great relationship with the Diocese of Chichester who have been very gracious in accommodating us for several years. Near the end of the summer of 2021, the St Philip’s Church congregation was willing for us to share the use of their building. What are your services like? Our church motto is: everyone’s welcome, nobody’s perfect, anything’s possible. We have a family-friendly, contemporary style of worship service in the Christian tradition, which includes live music and practical bible teaching, followed by refreshments. Midweek, we host Connect Groups, kids’ music groups, bereavement support, and regular ladies’ tea and men’s breakfasts. We really do have a heart for our local community. What is your relationship with the Church of England?

Jéan and his wife Nicky

Arundel who have graciously provided the woodland for our monthly events. We usually host up to 20 people, feeding everyone a cooked bushcraft breakfast, al fresco style, and teaching practical bushcraft skills, as well as environmental education. We have had the support of several supermarkets who have either donated food or given us a donation towards food costs. We’re currently one of three charities participating in the Tesco Community Grants Coin Scheme, so every in-store vote for our project is greatly appreciated. Ready for Spring Hove Park won the award in 2021 for the seventeenth consecutive year and is looking reasonably smart and tidy as Spring approaches.

n

Around the park updated well-designed maps highlight the main features and facilities together with concise information. The busy café’s verandah is decorated

with colourful hanging baskets. Riptide’s outdoor area has gained some equipment. Early crocuses and a few snowdrops and daffodils are already in flower and the Purple4Polio crocus display, enlarged further by the Friends’ Autumn planting, should appear soon.

27 News from the council…

Toads Hole Valley planning application... The application for the development, near King George VI Avenue, includes plans for new homes, a school, community/sports facilities, offices and retail space. The duplicate application (ref BH2022/00203) is identical to the latest version of the original application submitted in 2018. Anyone wishing to comment on the application must do so again, even if they have submitted a comment before. The duplicate application means that councillors would still be given the opportunity to make a decision at a local level. This comes after the developer informed the council of their intention to make an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate against non-determination of the original 2018 application. The original planning application received more than 450 comments. As a result of issues raised by National Highways and council transport officers, the developers have had to re-assess their transport case. Unfortunately, (at the time of writing in mid-February) National Highways have not been in a position to issue their opinion on the impact on the A27 and local roads, making it impossible for the council to decide to grant or refuse the application.

ning Inspectorate for ‘non-determination’ - essentially where no decision has been made. This will result in the Government appointing a Planning Inspector to hold a public inquiry on the current planning application. The inquiry would be likely to be held in late spring 2022. What happens next? The council remain keen to ensure that, when forecasts about the traffic impact have finally been assessed, councillors are given the opportunity to determine this application at a local level. The developers therefore are taking a ‘twin track’ approach, where a duplicate application (to be determined at local level) runs alongside an appeal (to be determined by the Planning Inspectorate). A determination of this duplicate application would be made at a special meeting of the planning committee, most likely in March/April 2022.

Unfortunately, comments provided for the previous application cannot legally be carried forward to the duplicate application, so anyone wishing to have their comments considered will need to make a new submission at As a result of the overall delay, the deplanningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk veloper has given notice that they will be exercising their right to appeal to the Plan- (search for application BH2022/00203).

29 A reader’s letter in response to an article in January by local resident Gareth Hall…

Toads Hole Valley – another view I am pleased to read that Gareth Hall is not against the development in

principle - unlike the NIMBYs who would never agree to it, but are unwilling to say so directly.

I am concerned that some of his claims are not backed up with evidence: “traffic increasing by 50% over the next few years”. What area of the city is affected, and over how many years? Compare this statement with the actual statistics showing the increase in cycling on the A259 on page 9 of the January Hovarian.

Dogs eating dormice are a real concern, but is this fact or “fake news”? If this is true I would want to see the proof, before trying to find a solution - there must be one. Although I don’t have children trying to find property for sale at affordable prices, I have many friends who do. We also welcome immigrants, so with the increase in population, more housing is required. Also it is very upsetting to see homeless people on the streets. They are entitled to a place to live as well. As the development is going to go ahead, then we residents should propose solutions we would find acceptable. Chas Pearson Cobton Drive

Gareth Hall is against the current plans, so I am disappointed to read only criticism, but no suggestions as to how his objections would be overcome.

Aldi planning application withdrawn The Planning Committee had been due to consider the proposal at their February meeting. 60 objections were received to the application and a report to the Planning Com-

mittee detailed concerns over developing the site for a large-scale retail use, as well as transport issues and a possible harmful impact on wildlife. The report also said that the proposal did not represent good quality design.

New 5G masts planned Two new planning applications have been submitted to the council for 5G masts in the Hove Park area. Tongdean Lane A 16m mast, with associated cabinets, has been proposed by CK Hutchison Networks for the corner of Tongdean Lane and Dyke Road Avenue. CK Hutchison say: “There is an acute need for a new base station to provide effective service coverage and in this case, the height of the proposed street pole is the minimum required to bring the benefits of 5G to this area.” They report that people are increasingly using mobile devices in the home, which requires the installation of base station infrastructure closer to residential areas. Many residents living close to the site have objected, saying the proposed mast is too high, too close to houses and is likely to damage a nearby tree. Nevill Road Another application is for the grass verge between Court Farm Road and Nevill Road, where Cornerstone hope to replace an existing 10m mast with a 20m mast

The proposed location of the Tongdean Lane mast

and associated equipment. The replacement mast would be located a few metres south-west of the existing mast. Cornerstone say they need to upgrade the mast to provide enhanced 2G, 3G and 4G coverage and capacity, and new 5G coverage, ensuring that this area of the city has access to the latest technologies. You can find the applications on the council’s planning register at: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk. Search for BH2022/00093 for the Tongdean Lane mast or BH2022/00148 for the Nevill Road mast.

33 News from Conservative councillors for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen and Vanessa Brown…

THREE CORNERED COPSE It is very sad that the ash trees in the ever popular copse have been badly infected with ash dieback. An estimated 100 to 200 trees will be removed as they pose an increasing risk to both the public and property. Young ash trees between the ages of 1-10 years that are not showing signs of ash dieback are being left and kept under observation. Tree tops will be left on site to put nutrients back into the ground. They may look untidy but we are told there will be benefits in the longer term. DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD SCHEME Hove Park School in our ward operates the award scheme which we are both very supportive of. The school encourages pupils to take part but some more disadvantaged pupils are unable to afford the necessary equipment for the expeditions. We have therefore given part of our Councillor Ward Budget for this year to the school to buy some specialist camping stoves and rucksacks. This will enable more pupils to take part in this very worthwhile scheme. COUNCIL SPEND IN HOVE PARK When asked in December and again in February what specific infrastructure funding has the administration allocated for Hove Park, the answers were fluffy. The administration confirmed that a route for investment in local infrastructure is through developer contributions which are secured to mitigate the impact of new development. We are fighting to spend developer contributions, from development in the Hove Park ward, in the ward, but are facing clawback from wards to the south. If you want, for example, more trees on your street, now is the time to ask.

TREES DON’T COME CHEAP IN HOVE We are constantly pushing for more trees to be planted but were surprised at the detailed costings for these. The cost of replacing stumps with trees in five locations on Woodland Avenue (x2) and Mill Drive (x3) came to £21,480.39, broken down as follows: £4,612.63, £3,687.71, £4,573.80, £4,434.22, £4,172.03. TOADS HOLE VALLEY The applicant has submitted a duplicate planning application as they have lodged an appeal on the original outline application (submitted in December 2018). SACKVILLE ROAD Disruption caused by concrete in the sewers could be ongoing as you read this, with clearing machinery breakdown blamed for additional delays. Do please get in touch if you have been affected by this. CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC It’s become apparent that construction traffic belonging to developments around Hove Station is using Nevill Road as a short cut to the bypass. We have raised further complaints about this with officers and are assured that this is in hand. 35 News from Hove Park School on their latest Ofsted report…

Hove Park School: ‘a strong community ethos’ HOVE PARK

Here at Hove Park School and Sixth Form Centre we’re extremely proud of the education we provide. So, we were delighted when we received our latest Ofsted report which has given us a good rating once again. The inspection took place last December, after more than 18 months of Covid and all its challenges. The report is extremely positive, highlighting the significant strengths of our school, curriculum, staff and pupils. I had an incredible feeling of satisfaction reading the first two paragraphs. Pupils are proud ambassadors of the school. There is a strong community ethos underpinned by positive relationships. Pupils of all abilities and backgrounds are valued. They appreciate the support for their welfare and well-being, including their mental health. Pupils say they feel safe, and they are safe. The school is a calm and orderly place to be. Any incidents of bullying and inappropriate behaviour are dealt with quickly and effectively. The curriculum prepares pupils well for life in a culturally diverse Britain. The student council speaks confidently about overcoming sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia. The report also reinforces the importance of our vision to provide a whole education for every student: The school’s ‘Every Child Should’ strategy supports the development of the whole child, beyond the formal curriculum. This is highlighted through a wide range of activities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme. We also see ourselves as a school at the heart of the community, and the inspectors recognise this: Leaders have a strong understanding of the community they serve and do not allow social disadvantage to be a barrier to success. Parents are extremely supportive of the school. They know that their children are happy and safe. One parent wrote ‘This was not our first or second choice school, but it is definitely our first choice now.’

As with all reports there are areas for us to improve and develop, including ensuring the curriculum is implemented more consistently across all subjects and all years. We must also ensure children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are achieving as well as their peers. We take this feedback on board and will continue to focus on the themes that have been identified as we drive the school forward. In the last couple of years, we have made significant changes to the way we organise learning across the school’s two sites and the curriculum that is taught. I’m incredibly proud that the impact of this work has been recognised by Ofsted as being of high quality and making a positive difference to both student learning and overall educational experience. 37 Introducing a local service aimed at men in Hove…

Is Pilates just for women?

GENERAL

No way! In recent years Pilates has become more accessible to men with professional athletes singing its praises of how Pilates has transformed their body making it stronger and more flexible.

In turn this has helped them to improve their posture and prevent injury. What hasn’t made Pilates accessible to men is the emphasis on pelvic floor, which women gravitate towards. Men you have a pelvic floor but Pilates is much more than strengthening this one group of muscles. It’s way more than that and men you need it because it will benefit you in the following ways: •

Strengthen your core giving you support and stability to your back.

Increase flexibility and therefore mobility in your range of movements making it much easier to move, helping you feel less stiff and achy.

Improve your posture by working on deeper, smaller stabilising muscles and therefore lessening your propensity to injury and discomfort.

It can improve your fitness as it can be challenging, getting your heart rate up and making you sweat.

Teaches you how to look after your body and align it helping to support you in your other activities such as

weight lifting, your golf swing, running, cycling. •

Prevention is better than cure - Pilates can help to maintain and condition your body to tackle your day ahead and prevent injuries from occurring. A prehab to your rehab!

Helps you function better in your daily activities, undoing the bad habits that we inevitably fall into, such as slumping, working at a desk all day long.

Pilates is definitely for men and more men are starting to realise and see the benefits of this incredible mind-body practice that was developed by a man for men. Start your journey. www.mendopilates.com Anaya Grover - Founder

40 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Meeow… this is Hove, actually! They don’t come more kitsch than this! Postcards like this would have been displayed in their thousands outside Hove’s newsagents and gift shops in the days when holidaymakers sent greetings to those back home.

But our image (ACC/12514/9/2) isn’t a postcard; it’s actually a larger-than-A3 mock-up ready for the printer. Around the existing photograph of a cat, the printer has pasted cut-out photographs of separate areas of Hove, and over those has pasted the typed lettering. This is a Wardell postcard. Its maker, Alfred William Wardell, worked for over 40 years consolidating his monopoly of

Brighton and Hove images. Originally from Newport, Wales, Wardell started life as a piano tuner in Russell Square but was making postcards by 1910. During the First World War he served in the Army Service Corps but carried on the trade from various locations in Brighton after his demobilisation in 1919. The photographs used in this postcard were probably taken in the 1920s and

30s and each tells us something interesting about the town. In the top left image, you can just make out two grass tennis courts marked out on Hove Lawns, while on the beach there are two rows of what look like portable wooden shelters with canvas tops. On the right is Hove promenade, nicely paved - none of today’s asphalt! The poster is advertising the military band concerts which were held at the bandstand on Hove’s western lawns (now Rockwater). Below left is a view of the bowling greens opposite Princes Crescent and you can see the large building of Hove College on the Kingsway (now Princes Marine Hotel). The houses between the College and Viceroy Lodge are still there and there are some chic striped blinds drawn down on the windows of the penthouse flat at the top of Viceroy Lodge. In the view below right, there are cars parked in the road - no road markings yet - and we can see some semi-circular flower beds at the edge of Hove lawns where they meet the road. The humble postcard can be a rich source of information for local and social history. It’s thanks to entrepreneurs like Alfred Wardell, with his consuming attention to detail, that we have it all before us today. We know that Wardell ended his days in Worthing, where he died in 1962 at the age of 83. Unfortunately, however, we’ll never know why he chose a cat wearing a collar and bell as a centrepiece. Perhaps he considered that the glories of Hove plus a fluffy kitten made an irresistible combination!

43 A consultation on new council ward boundaries…

Have your say on a new political map

GENERAL

New boundaries are being proposed for council wards in Brighton & Hove City Council. The Local Government Boundary Commission wants to hear what residents and local organisations think about the proposals. A 10-week consultation on the proposals is running until 11 April 2022.

The commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries. It is reviewing Brighton & Hove to make sure councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively. The commission has published proposals for changes to Brighton & Hove. It is proposing that there should be 54 councillors (the same number as at present) representing 10 three-councillor wards and 12 two-councillor wards across the city. There would be 22 wards in total, one more than there are now. There will be changes to most ward boundaries. Poets Corner would be united within Westbourne ward, instead of being split between Wish and Westbourne, and there would be a new Westdene & Hove

Park ward, with three councillors. Brunswick & Adelaide would be joined with the southern part of Regency ward. Give your views The commission has a dedicated section on its website (consultation.lgbce.org. uk/have-your-say/29490) where people can see the detail of the proposals and comment on the names of wards, their boundaries and the number of councillors per ward. You can give your views by emailing reviews@lgbce.org.uk or by posting to the address below: Review Officer (Brighton & Hove) LGBCE PO Box 133 Blyth NE24 9FE

47 Great advice from Brighton and Hove Food Partnership for Food Waste Action Week…

Wasting food feeds climate change Did you know that throwing away food is one of the biggest contributors to climate change? 25-30% of global greenhouse gases are caused by food production, yet a third of all food produced is never eaten. 4.

As well as being a significant contributor to global warming, wasting food costs an average family of four around £720 a year. 5. It’s the equivalent of losing a whole bag of lovely food on a weekly shop.

Store your food in the right place. Most fruit and veg keep fresher for longer in the fridge, but onions and potatoes prefer a cool dark place in your cupboard. Bananas will ripen other fruit so store them in a separate fruit bowl. Perfect your portions. A mug is handy for measuring uncooked rice – a full mug will feed four adults. In the UK, most food waste - 70% - is wasted in our homes. It would take land the size of Wales to grow the 4.5 million tonnes of edible food that we chuck into our bins each year!

49 News from a local group…

Hove Civic Society... creating Space for People Hove Civic Society was formed in the 1960s primarily to try to stem the wave of developments then, as now, rippling through Hove.

We have some 260 members and a committee which coordinates our various activities. Over the last few years we have tried to redefine our scope, not least in view of the ever decreasing public funding for the maintenance and improvement of our public realm and of course in view of the net zero carbon challenge for the city. We are now a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation), which gives us a very broad scope indeed to engage in activities that improve our public realm including arts and recreational activities. Our most long running project is the ‘Restoring our Victorian Street Tree Heritage’ campaign, where we work with local residents’ groups to raise funding for new street trees. So far we have been able to support planting in York Road, Montpelier Terrace, Marmion Road, Stoneham Road, Bigwood Avenue, Coleridge and Shakespeare Streets and Portland Road as well as the hedge planting at Hove Junior School. Next we will support planting in Glebe Villas. In total we have now helped create over 100 street trees in our communities. Our funds come from our ‘tree angels’ or ‘tree cherubs’, who donate £250 or £125 annually.

Our flagship project is Hove Plinth, which will house a succession of high-quality sculptures to enrich the cultural offering in Hove. The Plinth was inaugurated in 2018 with the first sculpture, Constellation by Jonathan Wright. Constellation depicts objects and symbols all related to Hove, chosen in public workshops with Hove residents. The sculpture has become one of the most photographed installations along the seafront. The second sculpture, Flight of the Langoustine, was hugely popular when we carried out a public consultation. It has now been modelled and is ready for bronze casting. Four life-size figures, each weighing about 160kg. So far we have raised £180K for this project. Over the coming months I will tell you about our plans for a micro-park at St Aubyns, our suggestions for a make-over of Church Road and our campaign for One New Street Tree for each New Dwelling built in the city. For more information and how you can support us see: https://hovecivicsociety.org/ Helmut Lusser Chairman, Hove Civic Society

Much has happened since, and while we still comment and make representations, both for and against new development, we are now much more engaged in influencing policy for Hove and Portslade and getting involved in practical improvements to our part of the city.

57 Meet Felipe Lira, founder of a local beach soccer club…

Beach Soccer Club…Lira Sports Felipe Lira lives in Hove. He’s a former professional football player from Brazil and is the founder of Lira Sports, who run a beach soccer club with sessions for children at the Brighton Sand Court, King’s Road Arches. How long have you been living in Hove? I moved to Hove from Barcelona in 2015.

While working with the England Beach Soccer National Team I noticed that not many children were playing beach soccer in the UK (unlike Brazil). I thought Brighton and Hove was a perfect place to start changing that. So, I bought some balls and goals and began by coaching Bruno Saltor’s son and daughter. He and his wife, Raquel, are the special people who have been supporting this dream from the beginning and we have grown from there with help from our regular volunteers Rachid Nori and Tracey Tarrant. How does beach soccer differ from football played on the grass? Firstly, you play barefoot on sand which has the advantage of not needing to buy expensive boots. Secondly, because it’s on sand the skills are different, with an emphasis on agility, endurance, skill and accuracy. The ball acts differently on sand compared to grass. With sand, you can’t dribble the ball in the same way, and it’s harder to control, so the game becomes more of an aerial game. It’s very technical and you see lots of spectacular overhead kicks, flying volleys and amazing skills as players flick the ball over and past their opponents. There is less passing and more goals. It is played 5-a-side on a smaller pitch and at a much faster pace - no time for daydreaming!

GENERAL

How did you come to start a beach soccer club?

Who can play? Everybody can play, but at the moment our club is focusing on juniors (both boys and girls). We would love to expand into Hove and encourage more people to get involved in this fast-growing, addictive and fun sport. But to do that we need more sand areas. There is a lot of demand in the city for sand sport but not enough facilities. With more sand space we could do more work with schools, develop future talent and work with the national teams. Team GB player Molly Clark was voted best women’s beach soccer player in the world in 2021. We are hoping to get Molly along this season to join in a bit of game play and encourage our youngsters. We are chasing the dream, come with us! When are the sessions? Every Sunday during Spring/Summer from 4pm to 5.15pm. Our sessions are mixed, for 8-14 year olds, no experience needed. 61 A local event…

Local music…

An Evening with BFC Spring Jonathan Aitken Concert 2022 The former Conservative politician is now 79. He was convicted of perjury in 1999 and served seven months in prison. Afterwards he read theology at Oxford University and was ordained at St Paul’s Cathedral in June 2018 as an Anglican prison chaplain. Jonathan Aitken has had one of the most high-profile and colourful careers in British life. He now combines being a chaplain at HMP Pentonville with serving as an assistant minister at St Matthew’s Church, Westminster, and also as Honorary Chaplain to Christians in Government. He has written 17 books – his latest is “Doing Time: A Spiritual Survival Guide” with co-author Edward Smyth, written for prisoners and their families. Friday 8th April, 7.30pm Bishop Hannington Church, Nevill Avenue, BN3 7NH Admission and refreshments are free, but booking is requested at bhmc.org.uk or call 01273 732965.

Latvian composer Ēriks Ešenvalds’ Dreams Under Your Feet is an evocative setting of five spiritual poems by Christina Rossetti, WB Yeats and Sara Teasdale. Mesmerising choral harmonies are accompanied by soaring strings and brought to life by Ešenvalds’ imaginative use of percussion. This will be the UK premiere of this choral suite.

GENERAL

Former Cabinet minister Rev Jonathan The Brighton Festival Chorus Spring Aitken is visiting Bishop Hannington Concert will take place on Saturday Memorial Church in Hove on Friday 19th March at All Saints Church, Hove. 8th April to give a talk on his life.

Ešenvalds calls us to dream of a better world in In Paradisum where harmonic tremolos conjure angelic wings and percussive sounds evoke a garden gate that the composer remembers blowing in the wind at his grandmother’s house. Elgar’s Serenade for Strings completes the programme. This remains one of Elgar’s more poignant works. The first and last movements are gently pastoral, but the slow movement is a wonderful outpouring of melody which in barely five minutes creates an unforgettable world of gently wistful dreaming. Conductor: James Morgan Saturday 19th March 2022, 7.30pm All Saints Church, The Drive, Hove, BN3 3QE For more information and tickets, visit bfc.org.uk FENCING PATIOS DRIVEWAYS BRICKWORK TURF AND MUCH MORE LANCING SUSSEX free quotes and advise

63 A community event on 19th March…

The climate emergency - what can I do? Many of us are worried about climate change - the way we seem to have lots more storms blowing in across Brighton and Hove now, and the news about the loss of our birds and other wildlife in the UK, ash die-back and elm disease killing our city’s beautiful trees. It can feel a bit overwhelming. And it’s not always obvious what we can do about it as individuals. So what can we do to help in our everyday lives?

To help answer this question, community groups and projects from across the city will be hosting stalls, talks and creative activities to help us all get some practical ideas and inspiration to take home and start doing more. There will be fun things to do on the day like printing and art-making, musicians to entertain and raise spirits, delicious food and drink, and lots of helpful tips and information. For example - would you like to do something useful with your food waste? Or maybe you would like to get a compost bin going in your backyard? Or maybe a community compost bin for your block of flats or street to use? The Compost Club will be there to help you find out how to make it happen. Maybe you’d like to start growing some veg of your own to help your intention to eat less meat? There will be people there who can help you get started. Or perhaps you’re finding the whole climate thing too depressing to think

GENERAL

That’s the question that has inspired a group of people in the city to organise a community event on 19th March at Brighton Unitarian Church on New Road. The event is called, simply, The Climate Emergency - What Can I Do?

about? Come along and spend time with people like you who are happy to talk and help with practical exercises to cope with climate anxiety. Organised by people who are part of Brighton Extinction Rebellion, there will be talks and demonstrations and lots of hope. If you’d like to find out more you can contact the organisers at xr_brighton@protonmail.com Put the date in your diary: 19th March, 12pm - 4pm, Unitarian Church, New Road, Brighton Tamsin Bishton

65 A tribute by Arka Funerals…

Peter Murphy It is with profound sadness that we let you know that Peter Murphy, CELEBRANT, ACTOR, MUSICIAN, SINGER, HUSBAND, FATHER and FRIEND, died suddenly on 26th January this year and his funeral brought Lewes to a standstill on Friday 11th February. He has been a fellow collaborator at ARKA for many years and supported many, many families with meaningful, beautiful ceremonies - of course, funeral ceremonies, but also weddings, baby namings and life transitions, not only in Brighton but country-wide. GENERAL

Peter was a generous, sensitive, beautiful, gentle man, such a creative force, and he will be missed hugely as we gather ourselves and move forward. We wanted to inform as many people as possible as he has touched so many lives in our community. Best Care of The Deceased 2017 Funeral Director of the Year 2014

67 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

Not all vegan foods are equal We’re turning to products marketed as healthier and more environmentally-friendly. Vegan foods are flying off the shelves, but just because something is ‘vegan’, can we automatically assume that it’s both good for our bodies and the planet?

Whilst fruit, veg, nuts and pulses are lower in saturated fat, sugar and salt, ultra-processed foods tend to be lower in protein and fibre. Some meat-substitutes have fats, fibre, salt, sugar and additives put in to create flavour and texture and extend shelf-life. Ultra-processed foods, meaty and meat-free, are easy to digest and studies have shown that people end up eating 500 calories more than with less processed foods. Cooking from scratch using whole foods and fresh produce solves lots of problems but our lives necessitate convenience so ready meals look set to stay. This being the case, choose meals with green and amber traffic light labels for salt, sugar and fats and based on whole grains and protein. And add vegetables!

GENERAL

Plants are full of healthy properties like micro-nutrients and fibre and free of ones that we want to cut down on like salts, sugars and fat. Animal-derived products are also nutritious. Some vegan foods can be as ultra-processed as some non-vegan foods, having undergone substantial industrial processing. One way to tell is whether there are more than five unpronounceable ingredients on the pack. Foundation Earth have an environmental scoring system

cally; locally alone doesn’t avoid the issue that some crops grown in the UK are more energy-intensive compared to equivalents imported from countries that have naturally optimal growing conditions. This is far more complicated when it comes to processed foods. Even if the main ingredient was sourced locally/seasonally, the other components and manufacturing methods can bump up its carbon footprint.

How on earth do we tell the eco impact of a food then? Many food giants have signed up to Foundation Earth’s environmental scoring system which assesses the eco-impact based on carbon, water So what about the eco-friendliness of usage, water pollution and biodiversiwhat we buy? 69 A new display starting this month…

The Regency Wardrobe at the Royal Pavilion 19 March – 11 Sept 2022

Artist Stephanie Smart said: “I’m very excited to be seeing the pieces on display in rooms that sum up the possibilities of the time and would have been known intimately by the Prince Regent himself.” Open daily Apr-Sep 9.30am-5.45pm (last admission 5pm); Oct-Mar 10am-5.15pm (last admission 4.30pm)

Photo by Ray Sullivan © The House of Embroidered Paper

The show taps into the current obsession with Regency fashion inspired by hit Netflix series Bridgerton. The centrepiece of the exhibition is a new dress on display in the Music Room. Symphony of Stars is a stunning life-sized court dress inspired by the architecture of the Music Room and the Chinese wallpaper in the palace. Stars made of rolled paper decorate the border of the train, platinum in colour in honour of the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
