Plans for new psychiatric centre

Sunday 22nd May, 10.00 – 13.00

Hazeldene Project Management have submitted an application to demolish Birch Grove Nursing Home at 1-3 Stanford Avenue and build a four-storey 25-bed psychiatric services centre.

Over-18s with an interest in art are warmly invited to join the Friends of Preston Park to create a piece of art using a medium of their choice – pencils, coloured pencils, paint, pastels, ink, collage, mixed media or any other. It will be a great day to meet other people with an artistic temperament and to share experience and knowledge. Note that you must supply your own art materials. To register, go to https:// www.friendsofprestonpark.org/ ?page_id=3090

The applicant says that the nursing home is no longer fit for purpose, with an awkward layout of rooms and corridors over five floors, and residents are being transferred to a new care facility at The Linkway. The overall height of the proposed building would be lower than the existing building. The psychiatric services centre would provide both day care and residential care, and there would be car parking spaces in the basement. You can find full details of the planning application at planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk – search for application BH2022/00867.

News from Theresa Fowler, Labour councillor for Hollingdean and Stanmer…

Hollingdean & Stanmer Councillor News Since I was elected to represent Hollingdean and Stanmer my inbox has been filled with residents contacting me about difficulty in parking in some areas of Hollingdean and, most recently, particularly on Davey Drive. Cars have been parking on the grass verges making it difficult for buses to get past and have delayed their journey. Also refuse and recycling have been affected with missed collections as the trucks have found it difficult to navigate past cars parking on the corners of the narrow roads. I have had a lot of requests for a parking scheme in Hollingdean and residents should have now received the first consultation letter asking if they want a parking scheme, full or light touch. If the results show that that is something that residents want, there will be a second consultation to find out the design of the scheme and then it will go to the Environment and Transport Committee for approval. In the meantime, the Council have implemented double yellow lines going up on the left side of Davey Drive and on the corners of all the Closes to improve access.

The Play Refurbishment programme to upgrade 45 play areas over the next three years across the city is in full swing with Hollingdean Park play area being next and the consultation is happening now. The consultation closes on the 8th May so it would be great to hear the views on how these play areas can be improved from the people who use this park. Dog poo has become a problem recently and the poo bins are often full and overflowing. These bins are being removed and new larger multipurpose bins are being put in which will be emptied more regularly. Theresa Fowler Theresa.Fowler@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Some grass verges in Hollingdean need attention where cars have been parking on them and at the last Environment and Transport Committee, I was pleased that it was agreed that Cityparks would complete a three-year trial to manage small, grassed areas and verges with reduced mowing to allow wildflowers to grow to increase biodiversity. It was also agreed that Hollingdean and Stanmer become one of the first areas to become part of a trial to plant wildflowers on them. Conversations will also take place with other ward councillors to find out if other areas should benefit from being part of the pilot.

News from the Preston Park and Fiveways Local Action Team…

Your PPFLAT needs you! The Preston Park and Fiveways Local Action Team (PPFLAT) has successfully been running for over a year now. During this time, we have productively connected with volunteer groups, local schools, ward councillors and statutory agencies to find out not only how the community would like to improve the area, but also to bring together those people who, as a cohesive group, might effectively bring about positive change for us all to enjoy. As the PPFLAT transitions into a more established organisation with recognised aims we would like to encourage more members of the public to join us and help us define what best practice aims we, as a community, would like to achieve. We therefore invite all community-minded people living within the Preston Park Ward area to come along to a public meeting in Preston Park, near the Chalet Café, on 14th May 2022, at 12.30 until 13.30, to engage with club other like-minded individuals; hear aboutAwhat

the PPFLAT has achieved so far and to discuss possible future projects and/or campaigns. Speakers from other LATS will also share their experiences of collective work in other areas of Brighton and Hove that could demonstrate possibilities for our own locality. LATs are about resident-led action to affect locally relevant change. So far, much of our work has been centred around the issue of safety in our parks, but if you have an idea you would like to express or if you see something that needs to happen, come along and be part of the change.

Take Shelter will be holding open weekends at the Downs Junior School air raid shelter in May…

Keeping wartime memories alive Our hidden heritage: Concealed under the playground at Downs Junior School is a 300-capacity air raid shelter, which was sealed up after the war. The shelter lay untouched for more than 30 years until it was re-discovered by workmen. In 2015 a team of volunteers restored it and turned it into an interactive museum. The shelter opened for the first time in 2016 as part of the Brighton Fringe and Take Shelter! was born. Introducing our veterans: Over the past six years Take Shelter has gone from strength to strength. At the heart of our project are a group of wartime veterans who share their time so others can hear about wartime life first-hand. Barry Gooders: Barry and his brother Gerald were evacuated to Brighton from London at the beginning of the war. Their mum joined them and they settled here. Barry was a founder member of our education team sharing his skills as a former headteacher.

Gerald & Barry Gooders just before they were evacuated

Mollie Gooders: Mollie used the shelter as a child. As adults Barry and Mollie met and married. They have just celebrated their 90th birthdays together. Hear more about their wartime stories on our shelter tours. Alan Dart: Alan is our go-to for all wartime history and collects memorabilia for our collection. Impressively Alan has attended every school visit this year.

Ann Ellis: Ann lived with her family in Lincoln when war was declared in 1939. For weeks she spent an hour or two every day in the school air raid shelters. Ann talks to our school groups about day-to-day life during the war and how different school was then!

David Pierce: David went to school at Coombe Road and remembers using the school air raid shelter with teacher reading ‘Milly, Molly, Mandy’ and practising times tables. David recalls watching the planes fly overhead and being very excited in contrast to his mother who was terrified.

Our veterans will be giving talks at 1pm and 3pm each day during our May open weekends and will be on hand to chat at other times too. Join us this May: Tickets are available for shelter tours via the Brighton Fringe website: www.bit. ly/3u3LhJD For more details about all the activities taking place during our open weekends, including our involvement in the Fiveways Artists Open Houses trail, please see www.takeshelter.org.uk.

News from a local group…

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods Improvements to the Easy Access path in Hollingbury Woods, carried out by contractors to the Council, have now been completed. The steep areas have been tarmacked and the adverse camber on some parts of the path have been addressed. The tarmac may look a little stark until it weathers in but hopefully it will now be easier for those with impaired mobility or pushing a buggy to enjoy the woods. Our volunteers have cut back the foliage to the entrance behind the Roedale cottages and will shortly be replacing the missing way-marking signs to help guide you. We will also be removing the build-up of mud where it has slipped down the bank onto the path, but soil creep is an ongoing problem. For the bridleway path the Council is going to provide us with a sign to put up to indicate that this is for shared use. If you’ve been through the woods recently you may have come across some felled trees; most of these are ash which have succumbed to the ash dieback disease which is affecting ash trees all over the city. Sadly, we are expecting to lose more of our ash trees and the Council has put up notices warning that in strong winds weakened branches could be brought down. We asked that the main trunk and branches of the felled trees be left behind so that they slowly decompose and become part of the lifecycle of the wood: they will be colonized by fungi and invertebrates such as woodlice, millipedes and the almost invisible springtails and start to break down the fibres of the wood. The creepy crawlies that live off the decaying wood are a valuable source of food for many species of birds.

joining us please take a look at our website www.fhbw.org.uk - or follow us on Facebook where you can see what we’ve been doing. We hope you enjoy taking a stroll through Hollingbury or Burstead wood this Spring.

Our volunteer numbers have been increasing this year and we have been pleased to welcome several new people. You don’t have to be experienced in woodland management, all that is needed is enthusiasm; we can guide you in safe use of the tools and offer you training. We stop for a break and some refreshments mid-morning and there is no obligation to stay for the whole session. If you are thinking of Have a local editorial item? Searching for dementia support in Kemptown Hopefully all adults are now aware of dementia and that it’s going to affect the lives of about one in three of us. It’s been hush hush for decades, but the last ten years there has been an effort within the UK and globally to get it into the media.

KEMPTOWN

This article is by Kemptown resident Lina Talbot…

And that’s because it needs to be tackled early, to help prevent it or slow down its progress. Otherwise more people will lose their independence, and require care in a specialist residential home. So we need to work at this, firstly by leading the renowned “healthy lifestyle” to reduce clotting of our arteries, whether from high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol. Both physical and mental exercise help improve the brain’s functioning in terms of memory as well as reasoning. And both feature in the services offered in Brighton & Hove for those with dementia or pre-dementia (also called mild cognitive impairment, MCI), as either group activities, peer support or Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) courses. So you keep forgetting the names of people you meet up with, or even not recognising that you know them…? While cooking you put in the wrong ingredient and ruin the meal…? It’s time to see the GP for a memory assessment. If this shows you have dementia or MCI, you will be offered help and information, though here the NHS passes you on to other organisations such as Age UK. They run current CST courses in Haywards Heath and Rustington, as does the Hop 50+ café in Hove. There is also Dementia Connect, run by the Alzheimer’s Society largely by phone, and Dementia UK’s Admiral Nurse helpline, for info and support. In addition, Brighton & Hove now have a specific one-stop shop called “Ageing Well”, which, since Covid arrived, has assembled a long list

Plus they’re hidden in the middle of a 43-page document! A clearer format would be most welcome, including a location map. Omitted, however, is Kemptown’s own Sporting Memories group, held in St George’s Crypt. Here you can enjoy solving puzzles about sportsmen/women and past sports events with others who share a love of sport. News from the council…

Black Rock boardwalk opens A stroll along Brighton’s eastern seafront has taken on an exciting new look, with the opening of a new 850m boardwalk. The boardwalk, which runs from the Volk’s Railway Station at Black Rock to the Volk’s workshops at the junction with Duke’s Mound, provides an attractive, safe and accessible route across the beach. With handrails, stop-off points and seating, there’s plenty of chance to stop and admire the new wildlife and vegetated planting area, created as a joint initiative between Brighton & Hove City Council and Kew Gardens at Wakehurst. The boardwalk has been constructed using 3,000m2 of composite decking, made from up-cycled plastic. Work began last spring with the constructors, Landbuild, facing a range of challenging weather conditions including Storm Eunice earlier this year, when the boardwalk withstood some of the worst storms the city has seen. Over 100 new boardwalk light units will be fitted in May, illuminating the main paths and junction areas. The unique vegetated shingle wave formations are now home to thousands of specially grown coastal plants and seeds, provided by Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank. A unique ‘wave’ design, created from 20,000 tonnes of shingle, will help protect the young plants from harsh coastal conditions. The boardwalk was officially declared open by the Mayor, Councillor Alan Robins. Cllr Robins congratulated everyone involved and said: “This stunning new boardwalk marks another step forward in ensuring our city is accessible to all, and I’m sure it will be a huge hit with both residents and visitors as a new way to enjoy our world-famous beaches.” The project is part of a large-scale regeneration effort to transform this part of the coastline. 23 Here are some of the Fringe events coming up at St George’s Church in Kemptown…

A Glass of Laughter Hullabaloo Quire is Brighton’s longest established, open access, natural voice choir. Over lockdown, they collaborated with Irish cellist and songwriter Vyvienne Long to co-create a fabulous online cabaret, which they are now bringing to life. A Glass of Laughter features some of Vyvienne’s songs from her latest album of the same name - augmented with the harmonic Hullabaloo treatment! As well as this, expect a solo set from Vyvienne, a solo set from Hullabaloo and some extra special guests and treats! 14 May, 7.30pm

The Maestro Magichour Theatre returns to Brighton Fringe with this new production dealing with Gaetano Donizetti, a neglected master of Italian opera. ‘The Maestro’ deals with the triumphs and tragedies of his life, and features live performance by an opera singer of some of his wonderful arias, as well as portraying his life and times. Three performers show his success with works like ‘The Elixir of Love’ and ‘The Daughter of the Regiment’. However, the

darker side of his life in which he faced huge personal setbacks and loss led him to tragic works like Anna Bolena and Lucia di Lammermoor. Those who have fallen under his spell will be fascinated by the links between his life and work. Newcomers to his work have the chance to discover a great composer.

Meet a Kemptown resident who’s just published her first novel…

Kemptown writer…Jacquie Bloese KEMPTOWN

Jacquie Bloese moved to Kemptown last year and her debut novel, The French House, a World War Two love story, has just been published by Hodder and Stoughton. Why did you decide to move to Kemptown? I fell in love with Sussex Square! I was immediately intrigued by its history – and inspired by the potential stories it held. Plus, I like being a little bit away from the mayhem of central Brighton!

Tell us more about The French House… The French House is set on Guernsey, during the German Occupation of World War 2, and it’s about two estranged lovers: Émile, who lost his hearing in a tragic accident, and Isabelle. Both unhappily married to other people, the German invasion throws them together again, through their work at the ‘French House’. And as their lives become enmeshed with that of an enigmatic German officer, loyalties are blurred and dangerous secrets form... What inspired you to write The French House? I grew up on Guernsey, and my grandparents lived through the Occupation and had many stories to tell. This piqued my imagination, as did the grim experiences of my great-grandfather who lost his hearing as a young man, as Émile did, and whose story has always haunted me. This set me on the path of writing part of the novel from the perspective of someone whose deafness allows him to see what others can’t, but whose voice, for too many years, has remained unheard. I also worked briefly as a tour guide at ‘the French House’ aka Hauteville House, Victor Hugo’s residence-in-exile. His lifelong muse and mistress, Juliette Drouet,

famously lived across the street from him, and this inspired me to use Hauteville House as a setting for a rather different kind of love story. Is The French House suitable for book clubs? Yes, it has a section of questions and, with themes of freedom and exile, loyalty and betrayal, there’s plenty to discuss! Who are your favourite writers? I love Elizabeth Strout and I have a soft spot for Patrick Hamilton’s gloomy but atmospheric ‘between the wars’ novels. Do you have any more books planned? My next novel The Golden Hour is set in the underground world of erotic photography in 1890s Brighton. It’s about three women, all fighting, in different ways, to be free. The French House is available from online retailers and local Brighton bookshops. www.jacquiebloese.com

Ten years this July and before that in Cuthbert Road for ten - I really love the area and proximity to the park, sea and the Downs. Tell us more about Actors of Dionysus… aod is a Brighton-based touring theatre company and charity that specialises in new adaptations of ancient Greek drama and new writing inspired by myth. Representing St Luke’s School, Brighton, Year 6 students Ryan, Finley, Gwilym and Rafa played in their first ever national team event and secured a place in the final, becoming runners-up to the more experienced winners from St Edward’s School, Westminster, who were the holders of the trophy last time the competition took place. It was a fantastic event with a vast number of matches played in the huge sports hall at WV Active, Aldersley. Our BTTC/ St Luke’s team took the silver in the Boys’ Under 11 competition and played brilliantly with some sensational shots and rallies. It was a tough final, but they played with flair, commitment and purpose and impressed not only their own supporters from Brighton, but also other teams and other coaches. In particular, the coach of the winning team spoke afterwards of their skills, saying they were ‘dangerous competition’. Awarded individual trophies at the ceremony, the boys were superb ambassadors of the club and their school. Congratulations Ryan, Finley, Gwilym and Rafa.

36 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Badgers, butterflies, bats and the odd fungi There was great excitement last month when one of our committee members spotted and photographed a lone badger in the twilight as the sun was setting across the park, writes Geoffrey Bowden, chairman of the Friends of Queen’s Park. We’ve known about the Queen’s Park badger sett for many years but we’ve always been somewhat cagey about pinpointing exactly where it is, in case it prompted people to poke around the entrance. The largely nocturnal animals are notoriously shy and would be seriously alarmed if they were to be constantly disturbed by badger watcher paparazzi hoping to snap them. Badgers are but one species that inhabit the park. Birdwatchers delight in recording the flying antics of the park’s squadron of swifts, but there are at least another dozen species of wild birds, including sparrowhawks and herons, for which Queen’s Park is their ‘hood’. Now the Friends of Queen’s Park have decided to get a little more scientific and we are teaming up with Sussex Wildlife Trust and will be organising a series of group survey walks led by Huw Morgan, the Trust’s Learning and Engagement Officer.

Huw is a prolific author. His extensive wildlife knowledge will provide people joining the walks with a unique opportunity to discover more about species in the park right on their door steps, while cataloguing them in a series of surveys. The first walk has been scheduled to take place in the morning of Wednesday, 15th June. It will focus on observing and recording all butterflies seen in a set period of the walk. Huw will be back in Queen’s Park to lead another walk in the early evening of Thursday, 15th September. On that occasion those joining the conducted walk will be studying the park’s bat population. The month after, fungi will be in his cross hairs. The exact date in October has yet to be settled and will be announced on our website, in our news broadcasts and via our social media channels, which is where we will be also announcing details of all the walks.

38 News from a local group…

Hanover Homeless Project are looking for a new base Last time HHP appeared in The Brightonian we were advertising our summer book sale which, thanks to the support of our community, was very successful. Since then, we have held a Christmas raffle and we have received many private donations via Go Fund Me, a grant from the Councillors’ Ward Budget and a grant from the Chalk Cliff Trust. We are very grateful for every donation and everyone who supports us. We have been able to supply our starter packs to 39 people, plus special packs for Care for Calais and Voices in Exile, during this time. These packs contain kitchen equipment, bed linen, towels, personal hygiene products, and cleaning products and items specifically requested. In addition we have supplied tailored packs for Care for Calais and Voices in Exile. We are now able to hold enough stock to respond quickly to requests. To date we have been storing our stock and packing up our packs at the Church of the Annunciation thanks to the generosity of Father Anthony and church members. However, the church now needs to use the space we occupy for other purposes, so we are looking for a new base. Currently we store our stock in an area 1.6m x 1.65m within a larger room where we have enough space to pack the starter packs. Ideally we want to be within easy walking distance of the Hanover area. We are approaching local organisations of all kinds in our search for an alternative space. As part of this quest we are reaching out to readers of The Brightonian. We understand that space in Brighton is rare and expensive but would like to appeal to readers to let us know of any possible locations they may be aware of. We can be contacted via: Our Facebook page – The Hanover Homeless Project, leave a message or by email hanoverhomelessprojectbrighton@hotmail.com To advertise to 3000 HANOVER homes and 12,000 across Brighton visit www.brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

40 Hanover news…

Hanover Arts Trail We are pleased to announce that the Hanover Arts Trail is back for 2022, as part of Brighton’s Artists Open Houses 40th anniversary celebrations. This year we return to a fun-packed May, with AOH running alongside the Festival and Fringe, making it a truly creative month. There are seven venues showcasing their art on the Hanover Arts Trail, including three new houses opening their doors, so make sure you show them your support. You will also have the opportunity to explore the extensive Phoenix Arts studios. Many of the spaces will be open every weekend over this period and some will be offering workshops and demonstrations.

These venues are mainly private homes where artists and makers hide away the rest of the year, working in attics, garden studios and on kitchen tables. It offers a unique opportunity to buy directly from the artists. Not only does this mean you may find a piece of art you fall in love with, but it also means you get to meet the people behind the work and find out what inspires them and their creative process.

To keep little hands occupied we will be running a Children’s Art Trail. Just pick up a Hanover Arts Trail map, visit the six houses, answer a question at each and get a stamp on the back of the map. When you have collected all six stamps you win a special prize!

Local news…

Hope & Glory The inaugural Brighton exhibition of multi award-winning international artist Alberta Whittle is at Phoenix Art Space in Waterloo Place from 30 April to 29 May. Living and working between Barbados, Scotland and South Africa, Hope & Glory: Encountering Welcome is a unique collection of Alberta’s recent work, exploring themes of personal healing and the cultivation of hope in hostile environments. A 3-D installation ‘Matrix Moves’ features physical contortions echoing the pain endured by enslaved people on journeys to the Americas in overcrowded ships. These colonial themes reformulate in her two Afro-futuristic photo collages on aluminium.

Brighton Fringe at The Patch The Patch (William Clarke Park) will be staging a children’s show, The Wagon of Dreams by Jellyfish Theatre, as part of Brighton Fringe on 21-22 May (1pm & 3.30pm). Three best friends are going on an ocean adventure aboard their wonderful “Wagon of Dreams”. Meet outrageous mermaids and fantastical sea creatures in a playful, inventive show, set on a retro caravan and packed with puppetry, music and laughter. Bring a blanket to sit on the grass. All performances are relaxed with integrated Sign Supported English. There’s also an under-cover Children’s Pottery Festival on 22 May. You will need to book a ticket to an hour-long time-slot. Tickets at brightonfringe.org.

43 News from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Milestone achievement of over 327 additional council homes for the city As co-chair of housing, today I was heartened to discover that Brighton and Hove have succeeded in greatly expanding our council housing supply. Over the last three years, we have achieved over 327 additional council homes, expanding net available council homes each year on average for around 80 households. A secure stable affordable home is the foundation on which people’s wellbeing can be built so I’m proud that, working together with Labour, the council has now become the biggest supplier of additional affordable homes in the city. With rents in the private sector soaring there is still more to do.

Low Traffic Neighbourhood for Hanover and Tarner In Hanover and the neighbouring Tarner area residents have been looking at some initial ideas of how our areas can become a low traffic or a “liveable” neighbourhood (LTN). Responses from residents, along with traffic modelling, will shape a proposal of an 18-month pilot scheme to go to committee in June before more consultation. The city’s Citizens Assembly voted Low Traffic Neighbourhoods as the third highest priority out of ten recommendations for achieving carbon neutral by 2030. The basic idea is to design roads to prevent rat running and to make public space more pleasant. Evidence shows that with less traffic, neighbours have more contact with each other, improving mental health, wellbeing and other associated health

indicators including life expectancy. The downside risk is that traffic can increase on the boundary roads of the scheme. This usually happens in the beginning and then over the longer term in roughly half the schemes some increase is sustained and in the other half the volume of traffic falls below pre-scheme levels as drivers decide to avoid the area or use different forms of transport. We need to get this right. I share residents’ concern over the impact on Elm Grove and have got the council to monitor air quality outside Elm Grove and Carlton Hill schools. Besides the planting of a few trees Elm Grove has been relatively neglected for many years and I hope the LTN will offer an opportunity to develop improvements here (either as part of the LTN or as a parallel investment or both). Residents want the council to look at safer crossings, speed control, safer parking, greening Elm Grove (especially around the school) and we are arranging meetings for residents and council officers to take this forwards.

45 News from Hanover Action…

Why do we want a liveable neighbourhood? Hanover Action, which has been active in the area for over 10 years, has a vision of a community where the car is no longer king, where the streets are comfortable places for people to walk and sit and be neighbourly and for children to play. More liveable neighbourhoods were in the top three recommendations by the people who took part in the city’s Climate Assembly in 2020 and all the evidence shows that people in liveable neighbourhoods are healthier and have increased well-being. We put forward the request for a liveable neighbourhood to be trialled in Hanover in 2020.

We want to ensure that traffic in Hanover and Tarner doesn’t get pushed to the boundary streets and put pressure on the council to make simultaneous changes to Elm Grove to make it safer for children and the people who live there. Solutions need to be found to the speed at which cars travel, poor parking, and additional pedestrian crossings.

We need to see traffic modelling data from the council to demonstrate where the existing problems are and the difference that a low traffic neighbourhood could make.

A liveable neighbourhood would mean:

We need as many people as possible to be involved in the next stage of the consultation in June.

Drivers from outside our area will not be able to cut through Hanover and Tarner to shave minutes off their journeys.

It will be easier to walk, cycle and sit, thanks to clearer roads and cleaner air.

There would be more green spaces.

Emergency services as well as refuse and recycling collections will have access to all streets. Vans will deliver and visitors will still be allowed to park.

HANOVER

Over the past few weeks people in Hanover and Tarner have been taking part in workshops to look at how we stop rat running in the area and create better streets for living in.

For next steps see the Council’s website: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/hanover-andtarner-liveable-neighbourhood-pilot

Two concept plans were produced for discussion with residents through an online consultation and a series of workshops. This stage of the consultation ended on 17th April. Many of us were surprised at the extent of the changes suggested and there has been an interesting and lively debate. Based on the community involvement a revised proposal for further consultation will be put to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee in June. We now need to look how the plan for the 18-month trial project is developed to make sure everyone in the area benefits:

47 This view on the liveable neighbourhood proposals is from a group of local residents…

A liveable neighbourhood... but only for the few? Residents have started a petition to halt proposals for a low traffic zone in Hanover. Brighton & Hove City Council’s proposed ‘liveable neighbourhood project’ proposes changes to traffic flow intended to reduce through-traffic on the smaller streets of Hanover.

Low traffic zones are controversial, with many of those piloted in London abandoned due to unanticipated detriment to the surrounding neighbourhood. Residents have been calling on the Council to consider the impact of the proposals across the whole of Hanover, and not to marginalise residential streets which contain schools, nurseries and shops to enhance quieter parts of the neighbourhood. Local teachers and parents of children at the affected schools and nurseries have also spoken with councillors to express their dismay. For some years now, residents on Elm Grove have been asking for proper enforcement of traffic speed limits like sleeping policemen, speed cameras and more crossings, as well as measures to address the amount of illegal parking like re-grassing the verges, parking bays and the establishment of trees and planters. Changes to the junction with Lewes Road have increased the level of traffic causing some residents to experience health issues due to poor air quality. Residents are also calling for better and more transparent information on why an LTN (Low Traffic Neighbourhood) area is offered to others in already quiet, pretty streets but little has been done to address these issues. They have asked the council how the pilot will be evaluated and measured. They would like to see benchmarking and monitoring of air

HANOVER

However, people living on neighbouring residential streets such as Elm Grove, Edward Street and Queen’s Park Road are desperately concerned that this will add traffic to their already busier streets. Elm Grove in particular has witnessed several serious traffic accidents in recent years, with the 20mph speed limit rarely enforced and chaotic parking on the street and grass verges.

pollution, traffic volumes, noise, traffic speed and accidents, and to understand the proposed acceptable thresholds of risk. Brighton & Hove City Council’s Chief Planning Officer, Oliver Spratley, admitted at a recent residents meeting that the plans were ‘flawed’. Councillor David Gibson has asked that a working group be set up to look constructively and intelligently at mitigating asks for Elm Grove before the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee meets in June. The plan is for that to be the meeting where proposals are signed off, so residents are keen to be involved to make these plans fairer for everyone. The petition, started by Facebook Group Elm Grove Residents and Friends, already has hundreds of people in support - you can add your name here: tinyurl.com/fnryb3m9

51 It’s festival time and there are events for the whole family…

Brighton Festival 2022 We’re back to a full-scale Brighton Festival at last, for three weeks from 7th May, when Brighton city centre will once again be filled with a sea of colour and creativity as thousands of school children, teachers and volunteers celebrate the return of the Children’s Parade after a two-year gap.

Plenty of the 150+ festival events are family-friendly. For young readers, former Brighton Festival Guest Director Michael Rosen, Cressida Cowell and A M Dassu will be among the acclaimed authors exploring their latest books and sharing inspiration. You can join one of the most popular young children’s bands, Andy and the Odd Socks, for a show full of fun and laughter. They star in their own CBeebies/CBBC show Andy and the Band, where they help their fans and save the day – a 21st century version of The Monkees (Sun 22 May, 3pm, Brighton Dome Concert Hall). Groove into the Woods is a jazz and funk fuelled family adventure into the deep dark woods, specially designed for children aged 3-7 and their grown-ups. A fun mixture of animation,

interactive music-making and solid groove from the Groove Baby Organ Trio – a chance for parents to experience concert hall quality music in a child-friendly environment (Sat 28 May, 11am, Brighton Dome Concert Hall). For adults, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men perform Shakespeare’s sparkling comedy, As You Like It, in the enchanting surroundings of St Nicholas Rest Garden. Bring a chair and a picnic to see this great play as it would have originally been presented – in the open air by an all-male cast, with Elizabethan costumes, music and dance. Around the city, including Beach Level at the i360, Without Walls will present an exhilarating selection of free pop-up performances from some of the UK’s most innovative artistic companies, fusing dance, theatre, acrobatics, circus and music.

GENERAL

This year’s theme is Rebuilding and Hope, celebrating the strength and resilience of our communities. The parade starts on Jubilee Street at 10.30am and ends on Madeira Drive.

Four performances are on offer during Brighton & Hove’s busy festival season, including the world premiere of Some Other Place by Italian dance artist Sara Sguotti, the first artist in residence at The Dance Space. Elinor Lewis presents Timber at 8pm on 27 and 28 May – a duet about reclaiming risky spaces, subverting limitation, and finding space to flourish within precarious situations. A different kind of dance show for very young children and their families takes place in partnership with Brighton Festival at 11am and 1.30pm on Saturday 21 May, including a stay and play session. It’s ok is a duet full of care, comfort and kindness performed in a giant perspex box, created with and for children aged 3-5 years and their families. Because I Can is a solo piece performed by acclaimed dance artist Lauren Potter, taking place at 8pm on 10 & 11 May as part of Brighton Fringe. Setting out to explore how society expects older women to behave, Because I Can challenges how women seem to become invisible after a certain age. Drinking water fountains

Park Active

As a nation, we use more than seven billion plastic water bottles a year, creating a mountain of plastic waste. Providing free drinking water refill stations will reduce the need to buy plastic bottles. The units also include water fountains so there’s no need to use a bottle if you’re on the go! The first two filling stations were unveiled in March at Hove Lawns and Hove Lagoon skate park and are already being well used. The others are at Churchill Square, on the plaza at the entrance to the Palace Pier, in front of Hove Town Hall and outside Brighton Station. If successful, more fountains could be installed. The six water fillers were due to be installed in 2020, but plans were put on hold due to the increase in COVID-19 infections. However, now that restrictions have been lifted and there is much more known about the transmission of the coronavirus, the council and public health teams are confident that the water stations can be safely installed, and any health risks minimised with regular cleaning and maintenance. Working with the British Parking Association, three of the city’s car parks have been launched as ‘Park Active’ car parks (parkactive. co.uk). When a fully active or sustainable journey isn’t possible, people are encouraged to use the King Alfred, London Road and Norton Road car parks and continue their onward journey by bicycle, on foot or by public transport. Wayfinding signage has been installed in and around all three to guide people towards popular routes and destinations and all are situated close to BTN BikeShare hubs.

GENERAL

Six new drinking water fountains and bottle filling points are being installed in busy parts of the city in a bid to cut down on plastic bottle use and reduce litter.

The council are offering a new way to travel actively and sustainably around Brighton & Hove.

59 Jesse Sheriff tells us about his family’s campsite in the beautiful New Forest…

Harry’s Meadow Harry’s Meadow is a family-friendly campsite in the New Forest, which offers spectacular views across the Avon Valley. Jesse Sheriff tells us more…

How did your family come to set up a campsite? My grandad’s house overlooks our original campsite, Harry’s Field, so the name ‘Harry’s’ is a homage to him (he’s 90, rides a motorbike and goes swimming in the sea throughout the winter, so a bit of a legend!). Camping has always been a meaningful pastime in our family, so when the opportunity came up to buy some land next to Grandad’s house eight years ago, and turn it into a campsite, it was a no-brainer. Since then we have opened a further two sites, Harry’s Meadow and Harry’s Old Airfield. What facilities does Harry’s Meadow offer? Harry’s Meadow is situated within the beautiful Hale Park Estate and spans 50 acres of New Forest parkland. We don’t have pre-allocated spaces, so our campers can pitch up wherever they want. We wanted to create a feeling of uninhabited freedom, but it was important to balance the ‘wild camping’ experience with some extensive facilities. We therefore provide 10 hot showers, 20 loos, sinks with hot water and multiple fresh water drinking points. We offer fire pits for hire, so our guests can sit around a campfire at night (a key part of any camping experience!). We also have a range of food and beverages served onsite, such as a pizza oven, a full bar and fresh coffee in the morning.

Additionally we have a communal stretch tent with benches and hay bales to sit on, where our campers congregate in the evenings. You also offer luxury bell tents. Tell us about those…

GENERAL

Jesse (left) with his dad

Yes, we have the pre-erected bell tents which are always popular. They come with beds and other soft furnishings. They can take a bit of the stress out of camping. What are the main attractions of the area? The River Avon is a four-minute walk and one of the best wild swimming spots in The New Forest. There are also miles of walks and forest trails to explore, or for a day trip there is the cathedral city of Salisbury, or Peppa Pig World which is 20 minutes away. Where is your own favourite place to camp? We love heading down to North Devon in our 1960s VW camper. We have a spot near the sea that we head to in September once our season has finished, and we can finally relax and take our turn at being the campers. Harry’s Meadow is in the village of Hale near Fordingbridge, Hampshire. Visit newforestcampsite.com, email harrysmeadow@gmail.com or phone 07534 006137.

61 News from the council…

Urban Tree Challenge Fund Applications are invited for the Urban Tree Challenge Fund (UTCF). The aim of the fund is to encourage community groups to plant trees in urban areas with low canopy cover. The UTCF supports planting of large ‘standard’ trees. To be eligible for UTCF funding, groups will need to undertake the planting and maintaining of the trees in the future. The UTCF is accepting submissions until the end of May 2022. 158 trees have so far been funded by 11 community groups within Brighton & Hove through the UTCF. Over the last few weeks, the council have been busy working with volunteering groups to plant 101 of those trees. All trees subsidised by the UTCF are eligible for registration

on the database of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a tree planting initiative to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. A part-time watering position has been funded to ensure trees survive their first few years. However, if you’re part of a group and available to carry out any local watering as a willing tree custodian, it’s always welcome. To register an interest, email arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

City Downland Estate survey Did you know that Brighton & Hove City Council owns 12,500 acres of land in the South Downs, most of which is within the National Park? This land is called the City Downland Estate and includes farms, parks and land used for leisure, sports and recreation. Residents of Brighton and Hove are being asked to help put the finishing touches to a City Downland Estate Plan that will set out how the council will manage this estate for the next 100 years. A draft plan has been created following a huge citywide consultation in late 2020/early 2021 which attracted more than 3,000 ideas and comments from residents. Now residents

65 A sponsored walk along the coast…

Brighton RNLI Mayday Mile On Saturday 14th May Brighton RNLI will be holding a sponsored walk the length of Brighton and Hove beach, from Hove Lagoon to the Lifeboat Station in Brighton Marina.

The Brighton Lifeboat (a B Class Atlantic 85) provides a 24/7 rescue service along the coastline between Newhaven and Shoreham and is entirely manned by volunteers and funded by donations. Rescues haven’t slowed down over the last two years, but not much fundraising has been able to take place, so the team are excited to be more visible in the community again. They’re also hoping to raise awareness about sea safety and what to do in the event of an emergency at sea or on the coast (call 999 and ask for the coastguard).

GENERAL

The 4.5 mile long walk will take in the Hove beach huts, Angel of Peace, i360 and both piers before ending at the Lifeboat Station, which contains a shop and visitors centre. Taking on this walk with family, friends or as a solo challenge will help raise money for the RNLI, who work all along this stretch of coast and beyond it.

68 Meet a vet who can visit your cat at home…

Coastal Cat Vet…Nikki Gaut Dr Nikki Gaut is a vet who specialises in feline medicine. With the help of two veterinary nurses, she runs The Coastal Cat Vet, Brighton & Hove’s first feline-only home visiting veterinary service. How did you come to set up The Coastal Cat Vet? The Coastal Cat Vet is the culmination of over 20 years of studying and working with cats. It is a dream come true to finally create what I believe is the best way to care for these fascinating creatures. Over the years I have seen many cats come into my consultation room petrified after a stressful journey in a car and carrier and then a busy waiting room. As a cat lover and owner, I knew there must be a better way. By bringing my veterinary skills into the home, cats (and their owners) are more relaxed in a familiar environment and as a result diagnosis is easier and recovery is often quicker. Brighton and Hove is full of cat-lovers who I think want a more personal and caring approach to their cat’s health, so we turn up to your door and take the time to get to know you and your cat without the time pressures or fear of a veterinary clinic. What services do you offer? Anything that can be done in a consultation room can be done in your living room – we arrive in our electric MINI and offer consultations, vaccinations, blood and urine testing, blood pressure measurement, acupuncture and ultrasonography. For anything surgical we have a state-of-

the-art surgical van. The Catmobile, as it’s affectionately known, can pull up outside your door and offer dental surgery (including digital dental radiography), surgery such as neutering and minor procedures and even visiting specialists for endoscopy and dermatology. It’s so wonderful to see these cats happily returned into their owners’ arms just hours after we arrived, having never left their own doorstep. What are the most frequent issues you see with cats? We see a lot of dental and arthritic issues with cats. They are masters of disguise when it comes to chronic pain and often their owners mistakenly put any behavioural changes down to age. It is really rewarding to treat these patients and suddenly, to their owner’s surprise they are behaving like a kitten again! 71 Wayne Imms on his Space arts event…

The Space For 16 years, I’ve been running a unique regular arts event, The Space. Each one has two guests, who I interview separately at an intimate venue. This May will be the 100th, with actress Jane Horrocks, known for the sitcom Absolutely Fabulous and Little Voice, the 1998 film, and many other onscreen appearances. Also at that event will be award-winning comedian Suzi Ruffell. Coming soon is actor Phil Davis; you might not know the name, but you’ll probably know the face. He’s been in popular dramas like Poldark and Sherlock, and films such as Quadrophenia, shot in Brighton, and Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake. He’ll be at June’s event, as will editor Chris Dickens, discussing working on Rocketman, Slumdog Millionaire and Shaun of the Dead, among other films.

and returned with seven events so far. I hope we can have many more. Details on the events are at thespace.uk.com

I suppose that having The Space exist for so long is a particular achievement, but it’s such a challenge. Due to the pandemic, it had a break News from The Ledward Centre…

Make Your Mark The Ledward Centre in Jubilee Street has launched an initiative inviting everyone to ‘Make Your Mark’ in support of LGBTQI+ communities. The campaign follows the announcement in February that The Brighton Rainbow Fund had signed a lease to secure the premises for the centre, which is named after the late James Ledward, a dedicated LGBTQI+ activist. ‘Make Your Mark’ offers people the chance to quite literally become a part of the centre, by donating a minimum of £20 in return for a personalised tile. Each tile will form part of a 6m x 3m Progress Pride Flag in the reception area. Brighton resident Adam Ceramic, who many will recognise from Channel 4’s The Great Pottery Throw Down, will personally create each tile. All proceeds will go towards funding the The Ledward Centre, which will offer a café, cinema, workspaces, cultural activities, performance studios, community radio stations, community meeting rooms and wellbeing practices. The Make Your Mark campaign is at www.ledcen.org.uk/mym.

73 A large variety of shows at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

May at the Brighton Open Air Theatre The Brighton Open Air Theatre is staging a host of shows in May, as part of Brighton Fringe.

Music includes Glen Richardson’s One-Man Live Aid. Glen has been a professional human jukebox for decades and is raising money for Martlets Hospice with a piano/vocal request show (8 May). The Dead Beat Poets and The Marching Skaletons form a fantastic double-header of musical entertainment. The Dead Beat Poets bring comic beatnik poetry underscored with percussion and howling saxophones, while The Marching Skaletons are a Day of the Dead-style eightpiece ska band, igniting the party with Jamaican old school classics and originals (15 May). Practically Perfect! is a light-hearted, affectionate and moving musical play about the life of Julie Andrews, filled with some of her bestknown songs (22 May). There’s also a performance of Gilbert & Sullivan’s Iolanthe (29 May), a musical play Bonny & Read (11 May) and Drag in the Park is back with Sax and Singalong (7 May).

For children, The Princess and the Pea is a charming production of the fairy tale, with a crystal-clear narrative, fantastic dancing, beautiful costumes and lovely music (21 May). There are all kinds of comedy shows in May. Improvised comedy troupe Pinch Punch welcome you aboard their hilarious and exciting show, Murder on The Improvised Express: a fully improvised murder mystery where the audience must help solve the case. There will be outrageous accents and larger-than-life characters, along with thrills, spills, and good old-fashioned kills (26 May). Other comedy includes Stand-Up Under The Stars with Reginald D Hunter (6 May) and Shake’d Up, a hilarious, unpredictable show based on four different Shakespeare plays (19 May). There is also a wide variety of drama, including The Spirit of Woodstock (5 May), and there’s an Open-Air Poetry Slam on 18 May.

77 Bringing dance to the Royal Pavilion…

News from Regency Radio…

The Teapot Prince

New arrival at Regency Radio

A reimagining of the lost 18th century French “Ballet des Porcelaines — The Teapot Prince” will be performed at the Royal Pavilion this summer.

Lynsey Bartlett, ex Heart FM breakfast DJ, has joined the team at Regency Radio, Brighton, with a new Saturday breakfast show from 7 to 10am.

Created in New York and premiered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in December 2021, these performances are part of its first tour that will also include performances in Paris, Naples and Venice. Created by Meredith Martin, professor of art history at New York University, and Phil Chan, choreographer and co-founder of Final Bow for Yellowface, The Teapot Prince is based on an Orientalist fairy tale about a sorcerer who transforms people into porcelain. For six performances the Music Room will be turned into a performance space and will include one special gala performance. The performances will be accompanied by talks about the link between the ballet, the enlightenment obsession with Chinese decorative arts and how this can be seen in the Royal Pavilion. Royal Pavilion, 19–21 June 2022 Tickets are available online (brightonmuseums.org.uk) or phone 03000 290902 (Monday to Friday).

The station’s schedule has been revamped, taking the number of presenters to 15, having started with just three when the station was first created during lockdown. Simon Blaxland has moved from weekends to take over mid-mornings from 10am to 1pm and Tony Portelli has moved from mid-morning weekdays to weekends. One of Regency Radio’s newest assets is “Travel Nick” who has brought a fresh perspective to the reporting of traffic and travel in Brighton, Hove and Sussex, and is proving extremely popular with the listeners.

GENERAL

Lynsey said: “I am delighted to be joining this great team of presenters on Regency Radio who have created the station that everyone in the city is talking about.”

Regency Radio is the first advert-free nonstop music station in the UK and has already achieved amazing audience figures in a short period of time.
