5 News from Hove Park School…

Our Prom 2022 We are fully aware that the ticket price, together with everything else that goes with it, will sometimes make the total cost a barrier to attending for some students.

Pangdean Barn is the perfect location for this special event to take place, which is why, before the pandemic, we have continued to go back there year after year. I am writing jointly with our Senior Students, Wala and Deneb, to ask for your support in ensuring that this year’s prom, after two years of disruption and challenge, is open and accessible to all our students, irrespective of their postcode or parental income.

PREMIER WINDOWS

Doors and Conservatories

However, the students have been working hard to raise money for an OurProm fund that we will use to subsidise the cost, to ensure all students are able to attend and/or families to access to help pay for the additional extras including: suit/dress, hair and makeup and transport.

HOVE PARK

The Year 11 Prom at Hove Park has become a wonderful celebration of a student’s time at the school.

Our Senior Students have been coordinating a number of events over the last couple of months including washing cars and selling cakes; however, we are reaching out to our community to see if anyone would be willing to support in the following ways: If you know / own a business that would be willing to offer a discount for students, that we could advertise as part of an OurProm package, including: •

Dress / Suit hire

Anonymously sponsoring a student to attend by contacting Amanda (aflippance@hovepark. org.uk) in the school’s finance office. Or by donating any pre-worn prom dresses or suits that students could use. Please use the same contact above for further information.

‘Tin Church’ Marks Its Centenary With A Year Of Celebrations HOVE PARK

The Church of the Good Shepherd in Dyke Road marks its centenary this year starting in May. The original church building was erected from corrugated iron and affectionately known as the ‘Tin Church’.

The tin church was not in the exact same location as today’s building, it was located a little further up Dyke Road between Tivoli Crescent and Matlock Road. In 1936 the tin church was relocated to Mile Oak where the Parish of St Nicolas needed it to cope with the increase in population, this new church was called the Church of the Good Shepherd, Mile Oak. Who would have thought that a church started in a rented room, which then moved to a building made from corrugated iron would still be active and serving its community today? The foundation stone of the current church on Dyke Road was consecrated on 31 May 1922. The Revd. Dr. Felix Mascarenhas, Vicar of the Good Shepherd said “Many things have changed in the first 100 years of our church. But what remains constant, is our history – a history of fellowship, trust, faith and hope, symbols that will guide us into the future. We look forward to celebrating with our community. We have several events scheduled throughout our centenary year which everyone is welcome to attend.”

services, concerts and an exhibition. The Centenary Exhibition will be on display in the church for three weekends (25th June - 10th July 2022). The theme of the exhibition is art, of which there is an abundance at the Good Shepherd. It will tell the story of the church building from its beginning and will give some explanation and background to its many features. Current and former parishioners have contributed to a centenary book, which tells the story of the founders and those who were involved at the very beginning. It also includes more recent memories and is a great account of social history within the parish.

The celebrations kick off with a Family Fun Day on the 11th June 2022, and include special Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

CLIMATE & YOUNG PEOPLE Samer took part in a Schools Climate Q&A with the city’s three MPs and children from schools across the city. A recording will be available soon. FAMILY FUN DAY, HOVE PARK, Sunday 17th July 2022 Friends of Hove Park along with Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals are holding a tennisathon in the park around the café and tennis courts with many other attractions to include: Zumba, Jazz Quartet, Bottle Tombola, Raffle, BBQ, Prosecco Tent, Craft for Kids, Homemade Cake Stall and much more. We will both be there so do come and introduce yourself. BUS STOP IMPROVEMENT PLAN The Council has been mandated to improve bus stops making them more accessible to passengers, for those with disabilities and mobility issues as well as those with buggies. We are pleased that reviews have been made in our ward and officers have identified the Woodruff Avenue stop as suitable for improvement works to be carried out over the coming few weeks. TONGDEAN CONSERVATION AREA After we spoke out against a review, we are pleased to report back that officers will not be including a recommendation to consult residents on the potential de-designation of Tongdean conservation area. Officers will continue to monitor the impact of change to the conservation area and may reconsider this issue in future if necessary. MODA/SACKVILLE Midgard, the site contractors, are making progress as some of you will have seen the block cores go up. Dust has been a concern for neighbouring properties and measures have been put in place to mitigate against this. Do let us know if more are needed but for now we have additional monitors on Sackville

Road alongside water suppression at the site’s boundary and water washing inside the site daily. Any scaffolding put up will also be sheeted. One more tower crane will arrive on site over the coming few weeks. You will also see work progress with some fit-out work taking place in two of the blocks. This means the workforce on site will go up and will peak at 450 over the summer months. Local workforce continues to run at circa 20% and we will push for more as the project progresses. You will be pleased to know there is a high level of developer contributions from this site, £1.4m to be precise. Four broad areas of action have been identified by officers and our project’s community liaison group and these include improving the basketball court in Hove Park, a contribution towards a tennis pavilion, tree planting, and improvements to the Weald allotments. The cashflow for this contribution is such that it will come on stream from 2023/2024. We will tell you more next time about the public art strategy for the site and murals you see and will see going up.

10 News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…

Three Cornered Copse at its best Despite the recent ash dieback surgery, and the Storm Eunice damage, Three Cornered Copse has put on a spectacular Spring display, as it recovers. The cow parsley is shoulder high, and covering much of the forest floor, before the tree canopy thickens and darkens, and takes the light from the vegetation growing beneath. For now, the fresh green new growth barely filters the sunshine, and the cow parsley is bathed in light as it grows. The woodland paths are dry, and baked hard as concrete, thanks to the dry Spring. It’s probably the best time of year to walk in this strip of woodland on the edge of the South Downs. But there also plenty of woodchips from the felled ash trees along the path and in several areas this has prevented any growth. The woodchips will take up to four years to decompose and return to dust, so it seems we’re stuck with them for some time. At least they may help keep the paths open during the muddy months. We had one final visit from the contractors in mid-May, which caused some consternation in the Friends group since this was in the middle of nesting season. But we were reassured that this was just one day to finish the work, and we’re

told, by the Ash Dieback project manager, that all of the work is now complete. The next phase of course is the re-planting, to replace the trees that were lost, and fill in some of the areas that were cleared. We will be in conversation with the project manager and the park rangers to make sure that this is carried out. It will be interesting to learn what species would be appropriate to grow for the next 30 years or so. One of our less considerate visitors to Three Cornered Copse recently decided to leave a motor scooter at the bottom of the grassy area. Unfortunately they also decided to set fire to the vehicle, and our members spent some time harrying the park rangers to clear it away. To their credit, they responded quite quickly, but there now remains a burned patch, which will need our help to recover. Three Cornered Copse is looking at its best at this time of year; the next time you wander through the copse, remember to play “spot the ash tree”. It’s quite a tricky game. Simon Baxendale

Poets Person… Claire Lewis Claire Lewis lives in Poets Corner. She is the director of Brighton & Hove Operatic Society’s production of the award-winning show, “Calendar Girls: The Musical” at Theatre Royal Brighton this month, to raise money for Martlets hospice.

POETS CORNER

Meet the director of Calendar Girls which is on at the Theatre Royal this month…

She is also a drama teacher, as well as managing Carmel House, a block of retirement flats in Westbourne Street. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? Seventeen years; I’ve lived in Hove all my life. Tell us more about Brighton & Hove Operatic Society… BHOS is one of the oldest theatre companies in the country, established in 1886. I joined as a fairly wayward teenager in 1986 for their production of Bugsy Malone and never looked back. The company produces musicals, plays and has a Musical Theatre Choir. They have a rich history with the Theatre Royal, going back to 1891 performing the French opera, La Mascotte. Calendar Girls: The Musical will be our 81st production held there. The company has a strong charitable ethos and is proud to be raising funds for The Martlets. Why did you choose to perform Calendar Girls: The Musical? This is the joyous show we all need right now. It’s both hilarious and moving, with strong female-led roles, giving opportunities to play with depth and humour. Gary Barlow’s music is perfect – every song has a strong narrative and

strikes at the heart of the moment. Tim Firth also wrote the film and the play but the musical is deemed his most successful version of this remarkable story, receiving 5* reviews across the board. It’s a story of empowerment of women, friendship/community and the ability of ordinary people to achieve extraordinary things. We know our audiences will leave the theatre feeling totally uplifted and full of hope and aspiration, that anything is possible. Where do you teach drama? My company TaDA! runs after-school drama classes at West Hove Infant School and Cottesmore St Mary’s. I also teach the Youth Group at Brighton Little Theatre and 1:1 LAMDA tuition from home. What do you do to relax? Spend precious time with my family and walk my grand-dog, Nelly, along Hove seafront. Also read a copious amount of plays as I direct for other local companies, Brighton Little Theatre and New Venture Theatre. For more information, visit www.bhos.org or email info@bhos.org. Tickets for Calendar Girls (22-25 June) are available from atgtickets.com.

15 Poets Corner news…

Stoneham Park has been the scene of a great engineering project this last month. Masses of tarmac have been dug up and carted away in preparation for the establishment of our long-awaited Nature Trail of trees and shrubs. I had hoped that this month’s article would have been accompanied by photographs of the work completed, but it was not to be. Like all the best engineering undertakings (think Crossrail or the Panama Canal, that sort of thing), this one is behind schedule. I hope that it will have been completed by the time you are reading this but, if not, I will do my best to describe what lies in store. Rather than simply cutting five smallish holes in the tarmac to take the five trees that are to be planted there to establish the Nature Trail, an experiment is taking place with two different systems of watering the trees. The idea is to use the run-off from the hard surfaces in the park, and groundwater, to ensure the trees are well hydrated for their entire lives. There is insufficient space here to detail the merits of the competing systems. If you would like to know more, then search online for ‘Stockholm

system’ and ‘arbor system’ and you’ll get an idea of what we are seeking to achieve. I earnestly hope that the western end of the park will be open again soon, and looking far, far better than when it was closed off at the end of April. Thanks for bearing with us!

19 News from Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Conservative councillors for Wish ward…

The lighting of Hove Beacon We sincerely hope that everyone can really get behind the lighting of the Beacon on the Hove seafront, just to the south of the Lagoon, on Thursday 2nd June from 9-10pm. It’s going to be one big party and all are welcome to attend.

The lighting of Hove Beacon will be different though as it will also mark the completion of an exciting project to light the Beacon nightly with an LED scheme, rather than with fire. The project began several years back on a dark, windy and wet evening when a small group of us scaled the Beacon to test out a prototype fire-effect lighting array to the designs of local lighting designer Eleni Shiarlis. Our project had huge potential to really brighten up a particularly dark section of the seafront but funding was an issue. Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I were able to raise funds for the project as part of last year’s Budget negotiations. We were inspired to do so by Audrey Buttimer whom many may recall lighting the Beacon as Mayoress of Hove in 1988, with her husband Jim,

in commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. Our local celebrations will involve Hangleton Brass Band, the bell-ringers of St Leonard’s Church and at least one other local musical act. There’ll be a few quick speeches and then the Beacon lit at 9:45pm. A wonderful group has formed to help make the evening memorable with many volunteers coming forward to help including members of the Friends of Hove Lagoon, Hove Beach Hut Association and the Secret Garden Group. I am grateful to all of them and everybody else who has helped out.

WEST HOVE

This event will officially mark the commencement of the city’s celebrations of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in the spirit of other similar events around the country. Switching on the Beacon will be the precursor to dozens of street parties taking place around the city.

During the course of putting this all together, we have heard many recall how they were present when the Beacon was lit in 1988 – often as children – or again in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee. No doubt similar memories will be created when the Beacon is lit for the Platinum Jubilee. We certainly hope so. 20 Meet a member of The Vox Beatles, who are performing at The Garden Bar…

West Hove person…Mike Mountford Mike Mountford lives in West Hove and is a member of The Vox Beatles, one of the UK’s top tribute bands. They will be performing at a free event on 3 June at The Garden Bar in Portland Road (on the corner of Mansfield Road) to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. What is your background? I grew up in Brighton and have lived in Hove ever since. After hearing the Beatles perform at a very early age, I knew I wanted to make music and be a performer. Started a school band back in the early 70s with my schoolfriends and we were called “Stony Youth”… Later formed a successful 50s and 60s band called “The Fourbeats” playing regularly all over the South-East. Was asked to be the karaoke compere on The Palace Pier, which I did for a number of years...all the time wishing and planning to be in a Beatles tribute. In 2012 The Vox Beatles was created and have been a successful UK top Beatles tribute act ever since, playing to audiences in the UK and worldwide, capturing their famous counterparts with attention to detail, authentic instruments and costume changes throughout, from early black Chesterfield suits, the Shea Stadium look to Sgt Pepper’s and the later rooftop era. When I am not performing with The Vox Beatles... I rehearse and play with The Mysterons UK and have also just started a tribute to the Shadows...gigs to be announced soon. Which Beatle are you? John Lennon. What is the best place you’ve performed at? That’s a hard question because we have played at some fabulous locations including Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the QE2 in Dubai and a festival to a crowd of over 6000 people, but one of the most memorable has to be our first ever gig abroad playing to thousands at the British Embassy in Kuwait. Do you often get to perform in Hove? Have played at Brighton Open Air Theatre over the last few years...play yearly at Rottingdean Terraces and The Garden Bar is the closest one yet!

Friends of Hove Lagoon update It’s that time of year when we receive complaints from Lagoon users about the length of the grass.

Staying with the gardening theme, our Hove Lagoon Gardening Group leaders are in much need of volunteers. During the growing season the weeding, pruning and planting sessions are now every Saturday from 9-11am. We get lots of “thank you’s” from passers-by, which is very nice, but we can’t do it without people on the ground (if you will excuse the dreadful pun). If you would like to help, email Tom, Chris and Joanne at hovelagoongardeners@gmail.com In last month’s Hovarian, I announced our Calendar 2024 collaboration with Hove Deep Sea Anglers. There is a long run-in period because we want the photos in the calendar to represent every month. Please submit your photos, with permissions, to the FoHL email address below or manager@hovedeepseaanglers. co.uk and not the Dropbox folder previously mentioned. Councillor Robert Nemeth (who is also FoHL’s Chair) has successfully secured funds from the council for the refurbishment of the Beacon on the prom above Hove Lagoon, with the addition of a permanent LED light installation – designed by local lighting artist Eleni Shiarlis. There will be a lighting launch ceremony to coincide with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations by the Beacon on Thursday 2nd June 9-10pm and everyone is invited to join

WEST HOVE

In order to reach a compromise between those who want the Lagoon to remain “wild” and those who have to search harder to find their dog’s poo (and in some cases their dogs!), we agreed a grass cutting plan with the council which would leave the grass in some areas short and in others long. At the time of writing the grass has just been cut, but not necessarily as we proposed…

Centre and Stanmer Park. The council are also hoping to install a CPT at St Ann’s Well Gardens later on in 2023/24, when the facilities there are refurbished.

On top of this grant, the council are also contributing another £94,500, totalling £424,500. This funding will help to provide more public toilet facilities to meet the needs of disabled people, in particular, those with profound and multiple learning disabilities and/or other physical disabilities, who may need the assistance of one or two carers. The grant is part of a programme to increase the availability of CPT facilities across England and it will allow the council to increase the number of CPTs in the city to eight.

A second round of grant applications is anticipated later this year, where the council are hoping to secure more funding to support the development of further CPTs in the city. There are around 1,300 registered CPTs in England, but demand for provision is outstripping supply and the number of CPTs needs to increase to improve access for severely disabled people and their carers.

This first round of funding will help to provide new CPT facilities in Wish Park, The Ledward

27 News from the council…

Cost of Living Crisis Appeal The increasing cost of living is hurting here in Brighton & Hove. Food and energy bills are going up but household incomes aren’t.

WEST HOVE

Households most likely to be in poverty include those where someone in the home has a disability and they have to keep utilities on not just for warmth and cooking but for health equipment such as hoists and nebulisers. The most serious cost of living pressure in terms of the rate of price increase is the cost of utilities at 54%. More than one in 10 households in our region are already in food poverty. Food Banks across the city are reporting increased demand. For a long time, the narrative was that people choose between heating or eating – we are now in the situation where some people can’t afford to do either as household incomes do not meet living costs. This is why the council are appealing for help to ensure that people in the city can be warm and fed.

Brighton & Hove Citizen’s Advice and Brighton & Hove Food Partnership have teamed up to launch the Brighton & Hove Cost of Living Crisis Appeal with the support of Brighton & Hove City Council. Initially the donations will be split with 60% going to provide help with fuel poverty and 40% going to pay for food. The fund will pay for prepayment vouchers for utilities or payments into utility accounts, and it will pay for food parcels and vouchers for food and meals. It will be used to purchase equipment that helps with food and fuel poverty such as microwaves. Vic Borrill, Director of Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, said: “We are seeing increasing numbers of people who have never needed a food bank before, including those who are in work. This situation is desperate.” How to donate: If you feel you could make a donation to help those in hardship, then please visit the campaign’s Just Giving page: justgiving.com/campaign/BHCostofLivingCrisis The council are also issuing the government’s £150 energy payment to thousands of council tax payers. If you feel this money could go to help households in hardship and support others through the cost of living crisis, then they are encouraging those who can to donate it towards the Brighton & Hove Cost of Living Crisis Appeal.

29 City news…

Trial Park & Ride cancelled A trial park and ride scheme in Mill Road has been cancelled. Mill Road was to have been used by Brighton & Hove Buses for a trial scheme from June to September 2022, which would have operated in a similar way to the scheme used by Brighton & Hove Albion on match days.

“Mill Road is within the South Downs National Park. So it would always have been contingent on planning and highways approval from the South Downs National Park Authority. Our understanding is that approval was unlikely due to their concerns about the impact on the National Park. The proposal also required a number of actions from the National Highways to meet the

start of any trial, including installing relevant signage on the A23 and A27 in time. “We felt the scheme would have given the city the opportunity to assess the impact park and ride may have on car use and any changes in uptake of public transport to arrive in the city. It also offered a chance to better understand the implications of park and ride schemes on travel into the city, air pollution, sustainability, traffic management and car parking capacity. “If the bus company or any other transport company wishes to propose an amended or alternative scheme, our Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee will of course consider it in the normal way.”

GENERAL

A Brighton & Hove City Council spokesperson said: “The planned trial park and ride scheme we supported at Mill Road was not a council scheme – it was put forward by Brighton & Hove Bus Company. The bus company has advised us that it is no longer pursuing its proposal.

31 The organiser of the annual Chattri Memorial Service tells us more about it…

The Chattri Memorial… Davinder Dhillon The Hindus and Sikhs were cremated at the Chattri according to their religious rites and the Muslims were buried near a mosque in Woking.

How did the Chattri come to be a memorial for Indian soldiers? During World War One, when Germany invaded Belgium, Britain had no choice but to declare war on Germany due to a treaty to defend Belgium against any invaders. However, Britain realised very early on that they didn’t have enough troops. The Indian troops were on their way to Mesopotamia to protect British oil interests but due to the large casualties suffered by the British Expedition Forces in Europe, the Indian troops were diverted to Marseilles. The troops were quickly transported to the Western Front and thrown into battle with little training in modern weaponry.

Davinder Dhillon is a former teacher. He lives in Hove and was awarded an OBE in January for organising a memorial service every June at the Chattri in Patcham, which commemorates all the Indian Army soldiers who died in World War One.

In honour of their sacrifices and contribution, the Chattri was built in 1921 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales in the same year. When did you start to organise an annual service? I started organising the Chattri Service in 2000. What will be happening at the Chattri this June? The Chattri Service is an open commemoration. It will include prayers, wreath laying, the Last Post, and short speeches by the Vice-Lord Lieutenant and by the High Commissioner of India or her representative. The ceremony will have a mixture of religious and military elements. Attendees will include the Mayor, the High Sheriff and other civic leaders and British and Indian Army representatives. Some 300 attendees are expected. Was your own family involved in World War One?

35 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman…

Coronation celebrations 1953 Hove was definitely the place to be in June 1953! Looking at the coronation guide produced by the council, one can’t help being impressed by the effort which must have gone into the ideas and organisation.

According to George Aitchison, writer of the guide, practically every member of the royal family had had friends in Hove. Top of the list, of course, was King Edward, who regularly stayed with the Sassoons, friends of ‘fittingly noble lineage’. The King often sat in one of the shelters on Hove Lawns in his soft Homburg hat, ‘a gracious smile on his bearded face’. Then there was the Duke of Windsor who would go sea bathing while staying with his former tutor at Hove Manor House in Hove Street. And one mustn’t forget Major and Mrs Woodhouse, Queen Mary’s friends in Wilbury Road, who took her shopping for local antiques. It was a relationship which Hove couldn’t wait to celebrate. Tuesday, Coronation Day, started at 8.45am with a massed drumhead service on Brunswick Lawn including detachments from the armed services and local public organisations. Crews from HMS Marvel and HMS Sussex, the home guard, the WRNVR, Queen’s Nurses, scouts and guides, the bus company, Hove police, civil defence – it must have been quite a sight. They paraded to a service at Hove Town Hall, and then to the King Alfred, where the Mayor took the salute. This was followed at 12.30 by a royal salute of 21 guns from the Lawns and a BBC sound recording of the London ceremony. Those lucky enough to have tickets could watch the coronation on a

A week of activities took place, starting on Sunday 31 May with the British Open Championship for ‘M’ class model yachts on the Lagoon and ending with a bonfire on the beach and dancing at the Western Lawns Bandstand (behind today’s Rockwater café).

television relay at the Town Hall. At 2.30pm, the floral clock on Palmeira Lawn was unveiled by the Mayor. There was then a procession of decorated vehicles from the Drive to Lansdowne Place, along the Kingsway to Wish Road, Portland Road, Church Road and back to The Drive. This was followed at 5pm by a children’s fancy dress parade at the King Alfred, and fireworks and dancing on Hove Lawns. One of the final events, on Saturday 6 June, was a horse show at Aldrington Recreation Ground (Wish Park), organised by the owners of Hove’s Wiston Riding School. Visitors could expect ‘hunters, hacks, harness horses, ponies and jumping’! Children could take home their own souvenir in the form of a coronation mug or beaker, and old folk had their treat, too. Two thousand of them were invited to the 10am showing of ‘A Queen is Crowned’ on 23 June, courtesy of Hove’s Odeon Cinema at the top of Denmark Villas. Let’s hope that the noise of passing trains crossing the tracks didn’t interfere too much with this very special occasion in Hove.

39 We sent a couple of people along to do a NEW two-day course in bicycle mechanics with Devils Bykes…

The mysteries of the bicycle revealed!

GENERAL

If like me you are a keen cyclist who has enjoyed riding a bike for years, but as soon as the slightest thing goes wrong with your trusty steed you have to get it loaded into the back of the car and off to the bike shop to get fixed, then this my friend is the course for you!

Getting to grips with adjusting the brakes!

Matt supervising the initial steps of indexing the gears.

During the two-day course I learnt about all the things that I knew I didn’t know about but had always wanted to understand! We took apart every part of a bicycle and reassembled it and in the process learnt about such mysterious things as the bottom bracket, the head set and the drive train. Not to mention the front and rear mech and all the parts in between!

Matt says: “I want to encourage people to understand more about their bikes and teach them to tackle some routine maintenance and repair jobs for themselves. My aim is to demystify and give people enough confidence to take on fixes at home or even on the roadside. I’ve always tinkered with my own bikes, but I didn’t realise how little I knew until I took formal training. I’m really keen to share tips, tricks and techniques to give a fast track to better understanding how bikes work so that they can fully enjoy riding them.”

I can now adjust my own gears and set my brakes and I can detach and clean my chain and all sorts of other things besides. To many this might not sound amazingly exciting but to those of you who fall into the same bracket as I did this whole process was like a form of therapy! It was incredibly therapeutic to replace areas of mystery and confusion with understanding and clarity. Matt delivers the course in a very relaxed and friendly way and is very patient with even the most ridiculous of questions. It is good fun and many a chuckle was shared! The groups are small and this allows Matt to spend the time with each person as needed to ensure that no confusions are left behind.

So, in summary, this is a great step towards understanding your bicycle and gives you a great foundation on which to become a confident and competent home bike mechanic. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who falls into the category of cyclist I fell into up to a couple of weeks ago! If you are interested in attending one of Matt’s courses then please get in touch and Matt can discuss with you in more detail what is involved. Give Matt a call on 07775 582898 or email matt@devilsbykes.com

41 Brighton Early Music Festival returns to Queen’s Park this summer…

Brighton Early Music Festival After a pilot Midsummer Season of outdoor events in 2021, Brighton Early Music Festival is returning to Queen’s Park this June with a series of events at Royal Spa on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 June 2022, preceded by two concerts in St Bartholomew’s Church on Friday 24 June.

For those who prefer to enjoy their music indoors, the Midsummer weekend kicks off with two concerts in the beautiful setting of St Bartholomew’s Church, near Brighton Station. Friday 24 June offers contemplative programmes from early baroque specialists In Echo (7.30pm) and late night polyphony from BREMF Consort of Voices (9pm). Tickets for BREMF Midsummer Season are now on general sale, with half price tickets for under-25s and certain other groups, and children under 12 go free. The late night polyphony event as well as a family concert in Whitehawk are operating on a “pay what you can” basis.

See www.bremf.org.uk/whats-on for full programme details and tickets. Brighton Early Music Festival is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and the Midsummer Season will be followed by more events in October and December 2022.

GENERAL

BREMF Midsummer Season at Royal Spa sees six events taking place over the weekend of 25/26 June. Programmes range from family puppet show Endo the Earthworm from Rust & Stardust productions (Saturday 11am) and an Indian Music & Dance workshop (Sunday 12 noon); toe-tapping music from both medieval musicians Joglaresa (Saturday 5pm) and folk band Hope Cove (Saturday 8pm); The Daksha Yagna - a performance of Indian classical music & Kathak dance (Sunday 3pm) and an event to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee with music from the reigns of our two queen Elizabeths featuring the musicians of Fair Oriana (Sunday 6pm). Audience members are asked to bring their own seating and invited to bring a picnic to enjoy. There will be loos and a bar on site to give the events a festival atmosphere.

Cathy Boyes, BREMF Festival Producer, says: “Although the 2021 season was originally made necessary because of Covid restrictions in place at the time, it was a huge success and audiences really embraced the idea of sitting outdoors with a picnic to enjoy some fabulous music. The classical portico which is all that remains of the 1824 Royal Spa complex provides an atmospheric backdrop for the events, as well as a little cover in the case of rain! We’re excited to be returning to this brilliant venue in 2022 with a packed weekend of concerts and workshops.”

FRI 24 – SUN 26 JUNE 2022 Celebrate Midsummer with indoor and outdoor events featuring medieval fun from Joglaresa; Jubilee celebrations with Fair Oriana; folk and bluegrass; family events; Indian music & dance and more. 43 A great local event for charity…

Paddle Round The Pier

With all the recent uncertainties, to make sure the event went ahead this year the decision was made to go back to how it all began over 20 years ago, with a focus on fun on the water and raising money for good causes.

GENERAL

Salt Images

Paddle Round The Pier is back for 2022 on Sunday 3rd July at 2pm, but this year’s event will be a little different.

For more information, visit paddleroundthepier.co.uk or Paddle Round The Pier Beach Festival on Facebook.

It will be a one-day event near Hove Lawns, with no paddle village, stages or stalls. However, there will be water events, including Paddle Something Unusual and the Doggie Paddle, with lots of fun and loads of money raised for local groups.

The UK’s first major city trail running event is coming to Brighton & Hove…

Brighton Trail Weekend Grounded Events, the team behind the Brighton Marathon Weekend, are staging the first ever Brighton Trail Weekend on 26 June. The event will incorporate a Trail Marathon, along with 10k and Mini Mile events taking place in Stanmer Park. The Trail Marathon will start on Madeira Drive, in the same place as the Brighton Marathon, but will finish in Stanmer Park. The route goes through the Sussex countryside and South Downs National Park, including a loop around Ditchling Beacon, where organisers are planning a cheer zone.

Food and drink will be available at a Start Village in Madeira Drive, where supporters can wave off the runners. At the Event Village at the finish in Stanmer Park, supporters and runners can enjoy food, drink, shopping, activities and live music. For further information or to volunteer, visit brightontrailweekend.co.uk

45 Club hosting Croquet World Championship offers FREE croquet lessons…

Sussex County Croquet Club As the weather warms up, Sussex County Croquet Club (SCCC) is offering free ‘have a go’ sessions just months before it hosts the 2022 Golf Croquet World Championship from 30th July to 7th August.

GENERAL

The club’s 11 pristine lawns are open every day but for the first time it is offering an evening session from 5pm till dusk on Tuesdays throughout the summer. “Croquet is a challenging and tactical sport. We think people will be surprised by how much fun they can have,” says Club Chairman Clive Hayton. The club has a licensed bar and there’s nothing finer than a game or two of croquet followed by a drink from the bar on a summer evening! Free have-a-go sessions are available at other times by arrangement. Coming along to have a go and learn some of the rules also means that you will be well equipped to watch some very exciting play when the World Championship comes to Southwick in the summer. Founded in 1847 and at the present five-acre site in Southwick since 1901, SCCC is one of the best kept secrets in Sussex and is home to The Croquet Academy, regarded as the croquet world’s leading coaching facility. In a footnote to the long history of the club, a historic trophy was recently returned to the club after almost a century. The club was contacted by Mr Andy Lambert, who was clearing his mother’s house in Edenbridge after she moved to a nursing home when he came across an SCCC trophy originally presented to the club in 1909. The winners included several well-known croquet players of the time and the last engraved winner was Andy’s great-grand-uncle, Leonard Arthur Flude Willan, who won the trophy in August 1921 and 1922. Andy told Clive Hayton: “Leonard died in 1931 aged just 54. I like to think that he may have won the trophy for a third time in April 1926 and may have kept it for good as was sometimes the practice. The trophy

must have passed down to my late father. After searching for the Sussex County Croquet Club online, it was an easy decision then to try and reunite the trophy with the club. It has been a great pleasure to have been in touch with Clive to arrange its return.” We are very grateful to Andy for taking the time to research this fascinating story and donating the cup to our club. 47 A celebration of women’s football…

Goal Power! This summer’s big exhibition at Brighton Museum is “Goal Power! Women’s Football 1894-2022”. It will run from 18 June to 25 September, showcasing women’s football.

Goal Power will look at the development of women’s football over the last century. You can share in stories of resistance and perseverance from women who dedicated their lives to the beautiful game, whose love for football means they have trailblazed the way for women and girls today from the feminist players of 1894 and the war worker footballers of the First World War to those who defied the Football Association to play and those who have changed the Football Association from within.

GENERAL

The exhibition will coincide with the UK hosting the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 (6-31 July), with Brighton & Hove as one of the nine host cities.

BHAWFC player Victoria Williams and Goal Power curator Jody East © RPMT

Brighton & Hove Albion WFC player Victoria Williams and Team Manager Hope Powell will be sharing personal objects and stories as part of the Goal Power! Exhibition, including boots, photographs and shirts. More information at brightonmuseums.org

UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Roadshow A free UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 Roadshow will be visiting Hove Lawns on Saturday 25 June (11am-5pm). It will showcase the best of football, fitness and music, providing families, fans and those that are yet to experience football with the opportunity to get involved in an unmissable tournament. The Roadshow is supported by the BBC and is part of a wider drive to introduce new fans to the women’s game to create a lasting legacy for women’s football. The free Roadshow will offer an introduction to football, with a chance to learn new football skills and tricks as well as try matchday pre-

senting and interviewing in a special TV studio. Featuring live music from local artists and a showpiece football pitch, alongside the opportunity to get a picture with the trophy itself, each event will provide a variety of fun for all the family. There will also be lots of exciting opportunities to meet legends from the women’s game, take part in interactive challenges and find out more about getting involved in grassroots football, the tournament, and how to purchase tickets.

49 An exhibition now on at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery…

The Jam Cover Stars In 1979, 12-year-old Den Davis went to see The Jam play at Manchester Apollo and his world changed forever.

GENERAL

A few months later, when Den started a Sunday morning paper round, he struck a deal with the shop. They saved every magazine and paper that had the mere mention of The Jam on them, and Den delivered the papers. So began the start of his journey to collecting anything and everything about the band fronted by Paul Weller, amassing the largest collection of vinyl and memorabilia in the world. It’s now 45 years since The Jam first graced the front cover of the NME in May 1977 and this previously unseen exhibition curated by superfan Den is a visual journey through the six years when The Jam were one of the biggest bands in the world. It shows 75 original magazine covers from when the band topped the charts to their last ever concert at the Brighton Centre in 1982. Magazines from all corners of the globe will be on display. A selection of Den Davis’s favourite items of memorabilia including ticket stubs and badges will also be on show. Rick Buckler’s iconic ‘Great White’ Premier drum kit used on many tours and videos will take centre stage. Never before shown in previous exhibitions is Paul Weller’s 1977 stage suit and Buckle Gibson Jam shoes from the “In The City” period. Den has always been involved in music; as a bass player, he manages bands and owns a residential recording studio in Manchester. Den said: “It’s 40 years this year since The Jam played their last ever show at The Brighton Centre and little did I know that the band would leave such a legacy. They are still so relevant today and I hope the exhibition will bring their fans all back together here in Brighton as well as introduce the band to a host of new fans. The museum is a fantastic venue for such an exhibition, particularly as Brighton has such a special place in the heart of all Jam fans.”

59 A local charity that’s very busy at the moment…

Hangleton and West Blatchington Food Bank The food bank is just up the road from Waitrose, at St George’s Church Hall on Court Farm Road on a Wednesday only. It was set up by the churches of St George’s and St Peter’s West Blatchington, as a need was identified in the areas of Hangleton and Knoll. Now, our clients are not from just those areas, and we are needed more than ever. In our first few years we were providing food parcels for an average of 12 households a week. Now in 2022 we average 30-40 households, which can mean we are feeding 100 plus people a week. We are a charity that serves the local community, not only as a place to get food but a place to come and seek money and energy saving advice or to have a cup of tea and a friendly chat. Our donations come from the people of Hove either as food or monetary donations. We spend money each week to buy fresh fruit and vegetables so that each client has access to a variety of foods. To access the food bank, you must be referred. Everyone that comes has a pre-arranged appointment and their access is monitored by our co-ordinator. Initially clients are offered six emergency food parcels and for some people this is all they need to get back out of crisis; however, we are finding that most people need a couple more referrals. It is such an incredible feeling when someone says, ‘I don’t need you anymore’. It’s exactly what we want to hear, that we have been there in a time of crisis and helped someone back to supporting themselves.

GENERAL

Did you know there was a food bank in the BN3 area? Well, ‘Hove, actually’ sadly has four. Hangleton and West Blatchington Food Bank opened in December 2014 around the same time as most Hove residents were excited about the new Waitrose opening.

If you would like to play a part in helping people in your community at their time of need there are many ways to get involved. With increasing numbers, we need volunteers either to pick up donations, attend Wednesdays and speak with clients and assist them with their shopping, or arrange food collections with local groups or schools. Please see www.hangletonfoodbank. org for information on how to be involved or how to access our services. Please help raise awareness and let people know about us by liking and sharing our social media. search for Hangleton Food Bank. Ros Morris, Trustee and local resident

Wild Sea Bass Summer Tray Bake Savour the flavours of soy and summer with this yummy and fresh recipe. Quick and easy to make - perfect for a sunny evening. Wild sea bass is fantastic and in season at the moment, best if bought fresh from those fishing off the Sussex Coast...

Ingredients 2 wild sea bass fillets 2 tbsp soy sauce (and extra to serve) 1 tbsp honey 1 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tsp sesame seeds 400g green vegetables (dependent on preference, long-stemmed broccoli and sugar snap peas are a good way to go) Vine cherry tomatoes A splash of olive oil Rock salt & black pepper to taste 4 spring onions (finely sliced)

Method

(skin side up), and pour over the rest of the soy dressing, finishing with a pinch of sesame seeds sprinkled on the skins. Cook your bass for 5-6 minutes or until cooked through. If you like a crispier skin then you can finish under the grill. Step five Serve your fish with your roasted tomatoes. If you want a more substantial meal, serve with mash, roasted or new potatoes. Feel free to drizzle over some extra soy sauce if you wish and enjoy! Top tips: try adding ginger or a squeeze of lemon for a bit more of a kick, or switch out the mustard for wasabi paste if you’re feeling experimental!

GENERAL

Cook time 30 mins Serves 2

Step one Preheat your oven to 220C/200C fan/gas mark 7. Then mix together your soy, honey, mustard and sesame seeds with a whisk in a bowl. Step two In an oven-proof tray, cover your vine cherry tomatoes with olive oil, rock salt and black pepper to taste, and roast for 15-20 minutes. Step three Next, assemble your greens in a shallow baking tray, add 4 tbsp of water and toss. Put your greens in the oven and cook for 10 minutes, allowing the water to evaporate. 63 Help towards medical aid for Ukraine...

Run2Ukraine Anthony Seddon, his Ukrainian wife Anna and their two children live in Station Road, Portslade.

target distance

As they were brought together by football and Anthony is a season ticket holder at Brighton & Hove Albion, he committed to run 1569 miles – the distance from the Amex Stadium to the Dnipro Arena of Anna’s football team in Ukraine. The challenge is called Run2Ukraine and they hope it will raise awareness and, most importantly, funds to buy and send medical equipment into Ukraine, particularly emergency first aid kits. Anthony is running various 10K runs, half and full marathons until he completes the distance. His latest run was the Battersea Park Half Marathon.

please help us save lives We are collecting funds to deliver medical aid to people living in Ukraine. Who are we? We are a family who lives in Portslade. Anthony plans to run 1569 miles to raise money. Anna (originally from Dnipro, Ukraine) collects donations, orders medical equipment and organises deliveries directly to Ukraine. We have two children.

With the money from the GoFundMe fundraiser, as well as money raised from friends and family beforehand, they have so far managed to send over £17,500 of aid. Every penny raised is spent solely on the medical aid.

65 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

It’s that time of year again… Predictably, this time of year always brings a new batch of clients desperate to lose weight before the Summer. I once worked with a lady whose primary goal was to lose weight, despite being riddled with a plethora of other health issues. These were seemingly not as important as fitting into her size 10 jeans.

Weight gain/loss is a sign of imbalance. In many cases, metabolism, the digestive system, liver and/or hormones may be involved. When imbalances lead to congestion or inflammation, the metabolic rate can slow down, causing one’s body to function sub-optimally. After years working with people whose aim was to lose weight, I came to the conclusion that although not everyone suffers with hormonal imbalances, liver congestion or inflammation, all have one thing in common: an imbalanced mindset. Indeed, many will control their food intake and sometimes blame food for their ‘failure’ to resist temptation. Others will over-exercise and exhaust themselves whilst continuing to put on weight. Not many will explore the reasons behind their eating habits in an attempt to change their relationship with food and with their bodies. I would like to make a bold statement here: weight gain is about an imbalanced mindset

GENERAL

Although there isn’t anything wrong with wanting to feel and look trim, I also see (mostly) women adopt extreme measures to reach their desired weight, often at the expense of their health. Thankfully, nutritionists and other ‘alternative’ health practitioners are often here to pick up the pieces and help to re-establish balance. For some, however, imbalances and consequences of extreme diets and habits can be so deep that it may take years to repair. that creates imbalances in the body’s systems (digestive, hormonal, metabolic etc). Therefore, the only way to achieve lasting changes to your weight is to address what’s in your mind and emotions behind your eating behaviour. This, in turn will increase your self-awareness and understanding, which then allows for change to happen. Then, and only then, will your body ‘release’ the weight. Just like my client found after realising the impact of her mind on her body and changed her inner ‘programming’. Cakes and chocolate were never the cause of her overeating. They were just an outlet. 67 News from Hove Civic Society…

Local communities and developer contributions One of the great mysteries of planning in our city is how developer contributions are negotiated, decided and spent.

While the new CIL regime is cranking up there are still many developments coming out of the ground where S106 funds have been negotiated and where funds still will flow for a number of years according to the payment schedules in the agreements. For example in the Hove Station Quarter area three new developments will generate over £4M in funds to become available over the next two to four years. These agreements have been negotiated in a very opaque way and as far as I can see there has been no detailed member scrutiny, nor any community involvement prior to signing off the agreements. From a community point of view the process has been completely lacking in transparency. A very positive break in this tradition is the initiative by MODA to set up a Community Liaison Group to influence how the S106 funds for their large development should be spent – with a focus on spending it locally for the benefit of local communities. The group includes local ward councillors and local organisations, including Hove Civic Society, and presents a good model for local democracy. I note the positive reaction of city council officers to the model.

GENERAL

Currently there appear to be some £21M waiting to be spent. These funds arose from a system where funds are required by developers to help ‘mitigate’ the impact of the new development. This is now being replaced by a new regime of CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) payments, which are more of a property tax. The receipts of CIL can be spent citywide but 15% can be determined by local communities (25% where there is a Neighbourhood Plan in place).

Development in the Hove Station Quarter area

benefit to people who already live in the area. The challenge will now be to design these proposals in sufficient detail that they can be implemented in the next few years and for that we need to crank up our capabilities so we can propose sound, well designed schemes. So I am looking for people with design skills, surveying etc skills who can join us in this quest. Pro bono! Contact me on info@hovecivicsociety.org Helmut Lusser Chairman, Hove Civic Society

In the first meetings a number of projects were proposed, including improvements to Hove Park, extensive street tree planting around the perimeter of the development and two new micro parks. Such projects will be of immediate Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk
