WEST HOVE
Meet a local resident who’s been a postman for 40 years...
WEST HOVE PERSON – RAY O’NEILL Ray O’Neill lives in Wish Road and is the longest-serving full-time delivery postman in Hove, having recently completed 40 years of service. He is also the stepfather of Wish Ward councillor Robert Nemeth. How long have you lived in West Hove? We moved here in 2007 from London. I joined the Post Office when I was 19 after coming over from Northern Ireland in 1978. When I joined Royal Mail I worked in the City of London in the King Edward buildings. Underneath the King Edward building was the old post office railway system which ran from East to West London taking mail across the city under the ground. This railway is now defunct but has been turned into a tourist attraction with the post office museum based at Mount Pleasant.
5
Why did you move to the area? Both my wife and I have family here so we decided to move nearer to them. We also wanted to live closer to the sea.

Has your job become any easier or more difficult over the years? It has become more difficult over the years due to the sheer volume of work that we now deliver. There’s more parcels and packages and less letters and postcards. In the early days we would carry our delivery in a mail bag; now we push a large trolley. With all this has come new technology which we use to scan and track items. There is also more competition and pressure to get the job done quickly. There’s not much time to stop and chat but I always like to pass the time of day with my customers. For some people who are housebound it may be the only social interaction of the day. Are there any perks to being one of the longest-serving postmen?

Seniority only plays a part when picking deliveries when we have a revision which we do from time to time. Most of the rounds are now measured out so are fairly equal in time and distance. I recently got my long time service award which I was proud to receive. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I walk over 30,000 steps a day on my round so I do like my sleep! However, I still like to keep fit by running with my running club ActiveRun. Our four grandchildren keep us pretty busy; we love taking them down to the seafront to play in the Lagoon park and the beach. We’re lucky to live in such a vibrant area with always something going on.

WEST HOVE
WEST HOVE BEACH This is another photo taken from the family album of Geoff Pike. It shows his grandmother (left), Kathleen Daniel, aged 17, with a friend (Barbara) in June 1914, a month before the outbreak of World War One. In the background are “mixed bathing machines, which looked like beach huts on wheels and could be hired. Bathers would get in at the top of the beach, change out of their normal clothes as a horse pulled them towards the sea, then step directly into the water from the front of the machine.

Local history from West Hove resident Rachel Bridgeman...
ICY TIMES IN WEST HOVE “Hokey-pokey, penny a lump, Hokey-pokey, sweet and cold; For a penny, new or old” The “hokey pokey man”peddling ice cream from his handcart was a common sight in Hove from the 1880s. Invariably Italians fleeing poverty, it is said that the name came from their cry of “Gelati! Ochepoco!” (“Ice cream. 9 Oh, how cheap!”). Children and adults alike clamoured for this cheap treat. Made in the slums, served in a shallow bowl, the hawkers sold a “lick” or “penny wipe”. No spoon provided; lick out the dish, hand it back for a wipe before it’s passed to the next customer. Unsurprisingly, the lack of hygiene meant this simple pleasure could prove dangerous – spreading diphtheria, diarrhoea and enteric fever. In 1901, Brighton imposed fines on street vendors selling contaminated ice cream. But without ice, there could be no ice cream.

A great new project from One Church Brighton to get people talking...
WEST HOVE
TABLE TALK BRIGHTON... TABLE TALK has been launched. The mission is to make Brighton even more friendly by offering opportunities to talk to new people. The simple idea is that cafés have an assigned table, marked with a TABLE TALK BRIGHTON stand, where people sit if they’re happy to talk to other customers. It’s for everyone, alone, with a friend, child or carer. We want people to TAKE TIME TO TALK. TABLE TALK has been supported enthusiastically by people of all ages and by the leader of Brighton & Hove City Council. Already participating are cafés in different areas of the city, including independents, cafés within stores, Starbucks, the two main hospital cafés and 13 community cafés. The idea developed when sadly there were accounts of people going for days without speaking to anyone. We want an assigned table to become the norm in city cafés for everyone to enjoy. Some cafés will offer TABLE TALK all the time whilst others on a specific day or time. Details are on the website www.tabletalkbrighton.org or Facebook.com/tabletalkbrighton. Why not give this a try as the new year starts? We’d love to hear of your experiences - email: tabletalk@onechurchbrighton.org
You can find Table Talk tables locally at: Blend Coffee Co, 32 Station Road (Mon-Sat 9am-4pm); Buondi Café, 18C Station Road (Mon-Sat 8.30-5pm; Sunday 9am4pm); Drury, Richardson Road (Mon-Fri, 9.30-11.30am); Café Domenica, Hove Library (Mon-Sat, 10am-4.30pm); and Troy Coffee, 81 Portland Road (Mon-Sat 8am-5pm; Sun 9am-4pm).

The first in a series of articles from local financial adviser David Lewis...
WEST HOVE
WHY SEE A FINANCIAL ADVISER? No one knows your needs, circumstances and preferences better than you. All the information you need to make a reasonably informed decision about investments, pensions or mortgages is on the internet so why do you need to talk to a Financial Adviser? Simply put, because it’s much easier for them to get to know you than it is for you to get to know the investment, pension and mortgage markets as thoroughly as they do. So Much Choice Having so many options for saving or borrowing makes them more accessible to everyone but it does mean the variety of options is mind boggling. Most people know investments always carry a degree of risk but knowing how much is too much or how best to manage risk isn’t so simple. A good Financial Adviser can explain all this and give you a few straightforward choices based on their understanding of your needs. So Little Time Of course you could research all your mortgage, pension or investment options yourself and gain some understanding of what is available, what the risks are and which would suit you but who has the time these days? The level of research required to make sure you understand the whole market and aren’t missing out on
anything is phenomenal. Don’t do that to yourself. Let a Financial Adviser do all that for you. Good Financial Advisers ask all the right questions to get to know everything they need to know about you to recommend the best borrowing or saving options for you and your family. At David Lewis Wealth Management, we use our knowledge of the marketplace to find the most appropriate solution and make sure you fully understand the risks and your obligations. Call us for a no-obligation consultation on 01273 933743.

Following a public meeting facilitated by Robert and Garry, our two Wish Ward councillors, a group of concerned residents have now established a campaign against the proposed development. The campaign named STOP - Stop Tower at Olive road Portland road - has the simple objective to prevent the tower development going ahead. The key concerns are the scale, overbearing nature and compatibility with the local area, the increased traffic, congestion, pollution, the additional drain on local resources and the precedent it will establish. For those wishing to review and comment on the current plans (ref BH2018/01622) they can be found on the council website where there are currently 83 objections logged. The campaign will start in earnest in January with the group raising awareness and seeking support from the local community. A petition will be launched within Wish Ward where we will be asking for your support, as well as an online petition that will target users outside of the area. Both will be handed in to the council planning committee. We appreciate that given the strong feelings raised at the public meeting others will want to be involved so everyone is very welcome to join the group so we can all help to protect our community. Update from your Local Action Team...
NEWS FROM THE WEST HOVE FORUM Public Meeting on Seafront Strategy: In March this year, a new Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is to be introduced on new building developments, to replace Section 106 Developer Contributions. 15% of this levy will be a neighbourhood portion and the designated neighbourhood forum will work with the council to decide how it should be spent. The West Hove Forum has therefore set up a West Hove Seafront Action Group of stakeholders to speak on behalf of the local community and to produce a framework to identify priorities for improvements to the West Hove seafront. The group comprises representatives of local community groups in the seafront area, such as the Friends of Hove Lagoon and the Hove Seafront Residents’ Association, as well as other stakeholders such as the bowling, tennis and croquet clubs, local businesses such as The Venue and local councillors. The group proposes to hold a public meeting on Wednesday 30th January at 7.15pm at The Venue Beach Bar (Western Esplanade, BN3 4FA) to present its proposals to local residents, club members and businesses. Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants: Grants from the 2018 fund have been awarded to: the Friends of Davis Park for a planting project; the Friends of Stoneham Park to set up a community gardening group; the Secret Garden Group to encourage more children into the garden; Stoneham Bakehouse to continue their Bread Shed baking group for older people; the Vallance Community Centre to continue their cookery group for isolated older people; and Say Aphasia to pay for an outing for members of their group, many of whom are isolated and have difficulty communicating following a stroke. Field Officers: The council has appointed a new team of Field Officers who act as trouble-shooters to deliver
The council’s new Field Officer team effective enforcement across a number of council services, including environmental health, housing, planning enforcement, community safety, seafront services and parks. They work between 12 noon and 8pm seven days a week, allowing them to visit residents at home to discuss complaints and identify quick solutions. One of the duties the team have taken over is a new weekend out-of-hours noise nuisance service – call 01273 293541 or email outofhoursnoise@brightonhove.gov.uk, from 5pm on a Friday through to 9am on Monday morning. News from Martlets hospice…
SNAILSPACE AUCTION RAISES FUNDS FOR MARTLETS Over 300 people gathered at Brighton’s iconic Metropole Hotel to see all 50 unique Snailspace sculptures go under the hammer and slide away to their forever homes. © Vervate Photography
Amongst the guests were Snailspace sponsors, artists and volunteers, alongside some of Brighton’s well-known faces and dignitaries. In all, £230,000 was bid at the Snailspace auction from guests in the room as well as online bidders. The profits from this income (after expenses and royalties) will go to Martlets and support their ongoing fundraising for life changing care for terminally ill people in Brighton and Hove. Danni Smith’s beautiful snail depicting bee-friendly flowers, ‘To Everything There is a Season’ sold for highest amount at £12,800. Fiona Blair’s ‘Hokusai’ sold for £12,000, Natalie Guy’s ‘Disco Snail’ went for £10,300 and Fatboy’s ‘Fast Forward The Mixtape Snail’ sold for £7,000.

Speaking about the Snailspace auction, Imelda Glackin, CEO of Martlets, said: “We are delighted with how much has been raised by auction, especially in these difficult economic times. Our giant gastropods have generated significant awareness of the work that Martlets does for families every day in this city and this campaign has been about so much more than just the money raised at this stage. Our #BeMoreSnail campaign, featuring our beautifully painted snails, has been a constant reminder to take a moment and enjoy the time we have with the people we share our lives with. As well as giving something back to our city, which we rely on to help fund our vital, life-changing care, it has also been a way for us to engage people, of all ages and from all walks of life, with our key philosophy of living as well as you can with whatever time you have left. Nathalie’s monthly health tip…
NEW YEAR - NEW YOU... You’ve done it again: overindulged in the holidays and feeling guilty, fat and toxic. Of course, you’re now keen to start the year on the right foot, with the latest exercise gadget, gym membership or promising diet. So here’s a reality check: only about 8% of us manage to stick to our New Year’s resolutions and diets. Not only that, but 98% of those who do manage to lose weight on a diet will put it all on again – plus more. Trouble is, it’s not just your self-esteem that is suffering here. In my practice, I see many people who, after dieting, have developed issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, chronic gut pain, skin problems, mood swings, depression and constant fatigue. • Help is at hand! Here is some realistic, simple advice to get you started on the right track: 29 • Best detox programme: Drink half your body weight (ounces to pounds) in water – sipped slowly all day. Every day. • Eat ONLY when hungry. Sound simple enough? Try it for a month. • Move more: Schedule movement in your day – a few squats on the hour, jump up and down for a full minute, a brisk 10 minute walk at lunchtime… • Be gentle with yourself – do things that make you feel good. A happy mind will result in a happier body! Have a great New Year and enjoy the New You!

PLASTIC-FREE SHOPPING AT HARRIET’S OF HOVE A new shop that’s completely free of plastic packaging has opened in Blatchington Road. Harriet’s of Hove is run by Harriet Dean-Orange and her partner Mhiran Patel. We asked them more about it... How did you come to start up the shop? We started up the shop after attempting ‘Plastic Free July’ earlier this year and finding it extremely difficult. We wanted to create somewhere that would facilitate people being able to shop plastic free, without travelling to Brighton, and that didn’t break the bank. What can we buy from you? At Harriet’s of Hove customers can buy dried pantry goods such as pasta, rice, lentils and chickpeas. 35 There are also snacks such as a Bombay mix and chocolate buttons available. There is a wide selection of bathroom and kitchen cleaning products as refills. Customers are encouraged to bring their own jars, bags or bottles to pay for their products by weight. We also offer baking products, tea and coffee, herbs and spices, dried fruits, fresh vegetables, fresh bread, oils and a wide selection of non-plastic items (such as wax wraps and None sponges) to remove the need for plastics in the home. How is it going so far?
Grooming your dog is all about caring and should be a happy experience. The Dog’s Corner is soothing, calming, and stress free. Looking after your dog’s well-being is our top priority.
Now offering dog walking service Other Services: Retail shop / small dog daycare self service dog wash/ dog walking service
It has been an amazing journey and a big adventure for us so far. As a nurse and a dentist, we know how to work hard, but of course running a retail shop is a completely different skill set. We are really enjoying it and very much spurred on by the pressing need for the planet to be more sustainable and the amazingly kind words of our supporters and customers. What’s your most popular product? The most popular products have to be refills of pasta, chocolate buttons and washing up liquid. Our beautiful Chilly’s drinking bottles sell well too. They really are eyecatching! Do you plan any new products in 2019? New products to stock for the new year include biodegradable glitter, plastic-free cat litter, nutritional yeast and reusable nappies. What a collection! Harriet’s of Hove is at 48 Blatchington Road. WEST HOVE
An exciting new gallery funded by a donation from a West Hove resident...
ELAINE EVANS ARCHAEOLOGY GALLERY A new archaeology gallery at Brighton Museum opens to the public on 26th January. It’s named after its major benefactor, Elaine Evans of West Hove. You will be able to get up close and personal with some of the earliest residents of Sussex and discover the compelling story of our ancestors who lived in Brighton & Hove through the centuries from the Ice Age to the Saxons. At the heart of the exhibition are seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of people, some of whose remains were found in and around Brighton & Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxon era. Using modern scientific technology, research into the lives of these people has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through childbirth, malnutrition, toothache and possibly murder. Now you can see what they looked like and learn 37 their real-life stories. Elaine Evans said: “For many years history and archaeology have fascinated me. One marvellous day I spotted a Stone Age flint blade by chance in my back garden in Hove, brought to the surface by worms. A new website for local residents and businesses...
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO…. We think we know what you guys are thinking before you use a business for the first time. How do I know they will do a good job? Will they overcharge me? What if they mess it up and don’t put it right? Lots of natural fears kick in before stepping boldly into the unknown and using a business for the first time. The above factors are why word of mouth is such a valuable thing. A positive word from a neighbour or a family member can often make the difference as to who you choose to do a job for you but these golden nuggets of information aren’t always readily available. Well, the above factors combined with these statistics…
91% of people have used and many use 39 regularly online reviews when thinking about using a service or buying a product.
86% of people will trust an online review as much as a personal recommendation.
61% of people form an opinion on a business
..have led us to the development of a new website just for you – the readers of our magazines!! In addition to reviews each business on the site will also have a business profile page with more information about the business, links to their website, any official bodies they are members of as well as a logo to indicate that we have checked that they are insured. To add further confidence for you, the potential customer, it will also state how long they have been advertising with us. Also each business has a page where uploaded photographs of their work are available for you to see.

WEST HOVE
This article is by Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...
HOVE LAGOON WATER PUMP BACK IN ACTION I’m delighted to say that the pump at Hove Lagoon is now back up and running after six months out of action. Whilst this is the result that Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I wanted, the background is somewhat scandalous. When the pump first broke six months ago, it presented something of a problem. Without a pump to suck water from the sea, the two pools at the Lagoon quickly empty. Lagoon Watersports and the pirate attractions 41 simply can’t operate without water. The Council brought in temporary pumps (to the credit of the Seafront Team), which caused somewhat of an obstruction on the promenade. The temporary pumps though were rented at vast cost from a large engineering firm called Sykes which was also supposed to be fixing the main pump. Five months in, the work had still not been done.
At £2,000 per week, and still no working pump, something like £45,000 of taxpayers’ money (plus £5,000 of diesel) had been wasted by that time. The news got worse though. Sykes wanted another four months to obtain a pump part from India. As soon as this situation was brought to the attention of Garry and me, we immediately demanded an end to Sykes’ involvement. Having been approached directly by Simon Maynard of local engineering firm Maydean with an assurance that he could have a new pump up and running in weeks, we were more than happy to get behind a new approach. We met on site straight away and the problem was diagnosed in minutes. A new pump was sourced and the old one refurbished as a spare – all at a fraction of the cost of what Sykes charged. The Lagoon will be filled again shortly (it does take three weeks though!). Given how badly Sykes has let the people of Hove down, we will be pushing the Council to pursue them for a refund of the rental cost.
