News from the Friends of Wish Park…

Wish Park Mural 2021 It’s the end of July and after four weeks of hard work by a truly creative group of local artists led by Becca Angel, we came together as a community to celebrate the launch of the second Wish Park mural. The 2021 mural is a 14-metre-long explosion of colour depicting a wide range of park users and four daily dogs enjoying a summer’s day in Hove. The mural includes images created by local children at May’s ‘kids art workshop’ – see if you can spot the dragon! Three of the creative team are also named on the mural but you will have to fish around for these. The mural was made possible by the generosity of local people and three amazing sponsors – Cox & Co, Chandlers and Wish Park café.

It was a joy then for the Friends of Wish Park to welcome so many people to the park on a surprisingly sunny day to celebrate the launch of the mural, with Peter Kyle MP cutting a golden ribbon and speaking of the joy of communities coming together to achieve good outcomes. July 31 was also a very special day for Heather Gahan who has sponsored the mural bench in memory of her late husband Tony. It would have been Tony’s 81st birthday that day. The celebration included free art, sport and music activities for the children – our thanks to Jimmy whose assault course delighted kids and adults alike and Pumpkin Patch for their musical playtime. Music to dance to was provided by DJ Cut, assisted by DJ Gerry aka park keeper Gerald. If you haven’t done so, drop by and see the mural for yourself and perhaps linger a while on the memorial bench. Residents of Reynolds Road have been busy brightening up their street…

Pavement Gardens Following our pictures last month of some of the pavement gardens springing up around Hove, Elaine of Reynolds Road told us about some lovely gardens in that street. Elaine said, “The fairy garden outside number 33 was done by nine-year-old Ellie and it inspired the rest of us to do ours. The garden outside my house was a joint effort – half by me and half by my neighbour. We’re still doing our bit!”

A local update…

Friends of Hove Lagoon You probably know by now that after much debate our committee decided to cancel LagoonFest 2021.

We are still holding the raffle in September, as we have some great prizes kindly donated by local businesses. The first prize is two tickets to the Fatboy Slim Brighton gig in November donated by Norman Cook, LagoonFest patron. Look out for information on social media in the next few weeks, where the prizes and donors will be listed, as well as information on where and when tickets will be available to buy. Or you can join the FoHL Supporter email list for updates. See contact details below. Volunteers to sell and offers to buy tickets are very welcome!

The requirements of the licence meant we would need to use fencing and employ a larger security presence to manage attendance and we felt this wasn’t what we wanted for our “village fete”. We will refund our stallholders and caterers, who will be first choice at future events. The committee will discuss the future of LagoonFest at our October meeting.

how well the thousands of perennials and grasses have grown and what a delightful addition they are to the west end of the Lagoon (please see the photo). So far, the plants have been respected and, apart from a dead fish and an empty (I checked) bottle of lager, there has been no damage to either quadrant. Chris Flint and Tom Stear, our amazing volunteer coordinators, and Nick Dexter, our local landscape designer who has offered his time for free, must be heartily thanked for their contribution, along with the bunch of volunteers who dug, planted, weeded and watered relentlessly and continue to do so. We will be thanking them, along with the funders Rampion Windfarm, the Council, West Hove Forum and LagoonFest sponsors, at a small celebration event in the near future.

The Cheese Hut, one of our 2019 sponsors, has some lovely LagoonFest branded cheese packs for sale (see photo) at £11.50 each, of which £1.50 will be donated to Friends of Hove Lagoon. Do visit their shop in Basin Road South and purchase one! All proceeds Sue Johnson, Secretary from the raffle and the cheese sales will go towards Lagoon improvement projects. Friendsofhovelagoon@gmail.com Talking of improvement projects, we have @LagoonHove had a lot of praise from Lagoon users @friendsofhovelagoonandfest about the Planting Scheme. 10 A new business based at Hove Enterprise Centre…

New business…Sussex Prep Kitchen Hove resident David Copeland has recently set up Sussex Prep Kitchen, which provides new and growing food businesses with their own prep space in a commercial kitchen environment. The business is based in the Hove Enterprise Centre, near Hove Lagoon. What is your background? I spent around 25 years working in commercial marketing roles, running events and organising trade shows. I have a passion for food and wanted to work for myself so, about two years ago, I decided to start an online fishmonger to fill a gap that I saw in the local market. This led me to take on a small industrial unit into which I installed a commercial prep kitchen and lots of storage space. How did you come up with the idea for Sussex Prep Kitchen? Firstly, my own online fishmonger business wasn’t utilising the space every day. Secondly, I remembered when I was starting my food business how difficult it was to find any shared kitchen space. With such a vibrant food scene in Brighton, I thought there must be people just like me who need space to prep their food plus store all the equipment. What services do you offer? We offer an all-in-one hire package which includes full use of the prep kitchen with ambient, refrigerated and frozen storage space. We even have an electric van which people can hire as an add-on service. Some businesses hire a few hours from us to start with, but many book up regular sessions each week. What sort of businesses are currently using your kitchen space? We attract food businesses who perhaps want to make the leap from a home-kitchen environment to help them grow. We also attract established food business-

es who may have run out of space. Our current clients include a vegan streetfood business, a company that provides packed lunches for film and TV sets, and a new company which produces ice-cream. What is it like working at the Hove Enterprise Centre? Very sunny most of the time. We’re based in a lovely south-facing waterfront location right near Hove Lagoon. We have excellent vehicle access and transport links, and our central location means it’s great for our clients and their customers. I thank my lucky stars I no longer have to commute to London to work, plus I imagine our environment here is nicer than a lot of commercial kitchens which might be delegated to a windowless basement. Sussex Prep Kitchen is at Unit 5, Hove Enterprise Centre, Basin Road North, BN41 1UY (in Shoreham Port, just off Kingsway). For more information, visit sussexprepkitchen.co.uk, email hello@sussexprepkitchen.co.uk or phone 07496 852133.

Meet a local business owner…

Local business…Lawrence Art Supplies Martin Lawrence runs Lawrence Art Supplies, established in London in 1859. They have a shop in Portland Road, and an art studio and warehouse in Kingsthorpe Road. Martin is also the Treasurer of the West Hove Forum and represents Portland Road Traders. How long have you been running Lawrence Art Supplies? I started working with my grandfather in Bleeding Heart Yard in London in 1984 – when he was 84. I took over day to day running a short time later. Prior to that, I was a biology teacher, so it was a big learning curve! I first worked in Hove in 1982 as a windsurf instructor at Hove Lagoon and we bought our first house in Hove in 1983. Tell us more about the business… We were originally makers of wood engraving boxwood blocks, but we also sold printing inks, tools and artists’ papers. When I joined the business, I felt that our customers would also like to see us stocking other art supplies so we started importing new brands from around the world. We opened our art shop in Portland Road in 1999 in a former Lloyds bank, complete with car park - which was ideal for customers collecting large canvases. A short time after that, high rents forced us to close our shop in London. I had also established a warehouse in Cornwall which we were able to move up to Kingsthorpe Road in Hove in 2009, making us totally Hove based since then. We currently employ 24 staff and the 8th generation of Lawrences (my children, Amy and Adam) are starting to take over day to day running. Portland Road has much improved in recent years and is now a popular shopping destination with a wide variety of independent shops, cafés and restaurants and has turned out to be a good choice for an

art shop. We love living and working in the vibrant West Hove community. What is your most popular product? After paper, it would have to be acrylic paint – we sell many brands from student to artist quality. What effect has Covid had on your business? We had to close the shop for six months but, thankfully, we were able to retain all our shop staff on furlough and even employ some of them at our warehouse. During lockdown, our website traffic increased greatly. We had to run packing shifts in the evenings and weekends – everyone seemed to take up art! We also ran a local delivery service plus a click and collect service. It’s good to see the shop back open and busy again. What services does your studio offer? The studio has a successful printmaking club and also various artists run classes. Pre-lockdown we also had visiting artists giving lectures and demonstrations. News from the West Hove Forum Kingsway to the Sea: The seafront landscape design for the Western Lawns is now known as “Kingsway to the Sea”. Two landscape architects from Untitled Practice, who are working on this design for the council, joined our last meeting on 22nd July, along with council officers, to tell us more about their plans. They are looking at the lawns - from the King Alfred Leisure Centre to Hove Lagoon - as a linear park and have submitted a bid for £10.6 million to the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, which is for areas that have suffered from a degree of decay. The grant would have to be match-funded by the council. They should hear in the autumn whether the bid has been successful. If not, they will bid again. The landscape design project came about as a result of a proposal from the West Hove Seafront Action Group, established by the West Hove Forum three years ago, strongly supported by local councillors, for a West Hove Seafront Improvement Plan. The architects’ brief is for phased landscape improvements, to support local regeneration, meet local community needs, enhance a neglected asset and reduce climate change. They hope to improve access to the green spaces, which could be reprogrammed to make them active spaces. They are looking at making “landscape rooms”, more sheltered spaces, more shade and a sense of continuity. The lawn nearest to the King Alfred, used by Zippos Circus, is planned to stay as an events space. The lawns could have an active evening use and there are opportunities for improving facilities. The former pitch and putt lawn, nearest to Hove

Part of the Western Lawns

Lagoon, could become a skate park and BMX pump track. The timings have been delayed by about three months by the bid for the Levelling Up Fund grant. The council hopes to hold a physical consultation event in September before the concept plans are drawn up.

Surf-Lifesaving Centre: The Forum discussed the concept drawings displayed online in July by Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club for a Surf-Lifesaving Centre on the former pitch and putt lawns. Although not against lifeguard training, members at the meeting were unsympathetic to the proposal, as it was deemed inappropriate for the site. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by councillors and community representatives. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 29th September. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

17 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

Despite the lack of summer sun, it feels like summer holiday time in Hove and we hope you have managed some form of break with family or friends. As we headed into summer and out of lockdown it therefore seemed the perfect time to launch our campaign for safe public spaces. We are conscious that cases remain stubbornly high in Brighton & Hove, and as it stands, workers in every industry from hospitality to retail are being expected to put themselves at daily risk of transmission without protection. That is why we are asking residents and local businesses to sign our pledge for Covid-safe public spaces. Our pledge recognises the risk the pandemic poses to workers and residents, and asks everyone to keep wearing masks and maintaining distance in public spaces, particularly indoors.

The team handing out posters to keep the city Covid-safe

In July we were also really pleased to secure funds for schemes to improve the city. Our plan means investing in a Park & Ride, an EV car share project, cutting back weeds (the bane of our city at the moment), tidy-up teams to tackle littering, 20mph speed limits across the city and more money allocated to cleaning up graffiti. We hope residents in Hove and across the city will see a difference as these projects take effect. After enjoying seeing the crowds in attendance at Wimbledon this year, we are also making a further push to get the tennis courts at the Western Esplanade regenerated. It’s simply not acceptable that while other facilities across the city have fantastic courts and nets, our nets in Westbourne Ward remain torn, out of use and broken. We are exploring ways to take the courts out of council control and into the hands of the tennis club so that they can run a brilliant facility – they’re

the experts after all. And don’t worry – this doesn’t mean turning it into a private club. It would become a community interest company (or CIC), which is a special form of non-charitable limited company, which exists primarily to benefit a community, rather than to make a profit for shareholders. It could raise money to invest in the first-class facilities we want on this stretch of the seafront. Finally, we’ve been promising you a consultation on the regeneration of the Western Esplanade and we are now hopeful that this will be launched in September. It will canvass your opinion on what we would like this stretch of health, wellbeing, fitness and promenade to look like in the future. Hope to see you in September! Chris and Carmen Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

19 There’s a lot going on in Stoneham Park this month…

Last month, we made good on our promise to spruce-up Stoneham Park by holding a Park Tidy-Up event. Over twenty local residents answered the call, armed with litter-sticks, shears, hoes and shovels, and set about tidying up.

Our helpers cut back loads of those terrifying spiky thorns we have growing about the place, refilled the sandpit with some of the sand that had blown out, and weeded the wooden picket fence by the toddlers’ play park and so kept in check Mother Nature’s efforts to reclaim the park for herself! Other helpers set about tackling the humanity’s bad habits by scrubbing the ping-pong table clean of graffiti and picking up at least two bin bags of litter.

The band were due to play at our summer fair back in July which, sadly, was cancelled because of the pandemic. Having them for a special concert this month is going to be a wonderful alternative. Please show your support by coming along!

This month, we look forward to welcoming the brilliant Hangleton Brass Band to the park for a free afternoon concert between 14.30 and 16.00 on Sunday 26 September.

for tickets last year then keep an eye on your inboxes!

21 Meet a local artist…

Artist Amy Dury lives in Frith Road. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2020 and, during her successful treatment and lockdown, she began painting a series of portraits of her friends on their walks. What is your background? Originally from London, I studied at the Glasgow School of Art and then, after many adventures, became an art teacher. I am now Programme Leader in Art at Varndean College.

POETS CORNER

Local person…Amy Dury

Did art help you get through your cancer treatment? I decided to concentrate on portraits and started painting the faces of my friends and family who would come on long walks with me in lockdown. It was very therapeutic to have a focus and to spend so much time noticing and appreciating the people around me.

that tell stories of identity, relationships and gender roles, using vintage photographs and home movies to find interesting gestures and emotions. I like strong single colours, and elements of unfinished or suggestive paintwork. I have been showing in Brighton’s Open Houses and Cameron Contemporary in Hove, and recently have had a drawing selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize which opens in London in September.

Tell us more about the portraits of your friends… I produced about 15 small portraits and posted them on Instagram. My style developed and I began to understand what I wanted to portray – something other than a smiley, posed face, something more real and reflective of the person. My paintings were seen by the Tate and they commissioned me to paint a portrait of a female artist for a live event organised to mark International Women’s Day, in March. I presented a two-hour livestream of my painting of Cornelia Parker and it was watched by 45k at the time, and 250k since! I have now started a series of paintings of women who have had breast cancer and am starting to work much bigger. I started painting seriously about five years ago, interpreting old family photographs. I have since made many paintings

I like to walk up to the Downs, and have a particular fondness for the Three Cornered Copse and Newtimber Hill.

23 An update and some lovely photos from the Friends of Hove Park…

Summer to Autumn Heatwaves, flooding – quite a summer - but at least the deluges have kept the park looking green instead of parched and brown.

The Friends have had an enjoyable session tackling the weeds threatening to swamp the recent planting in the Pleasure Garden

and are planning further gardening sessions to help maintain the area. The upgraded area of the children’s playground is proving very popular, particularly the castle which usually has quite a number of youngsters making good use of it.

25 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Hove Park Councillor News A key aspect of collecting waste from the new bins councillors requested is that the Cityclean team would empty them, as opposed to Cityparks who currently empty litter bins from the city’s parks. In mid-July, officers noted that, following consultations with the various internal stakeholders in the council, City Environment would focus on deploying a larger bins pilot only to Wish Park, on the grounds that this park had the best access for Cityclean’s vehicles. Officers would use the pilots to assess the amount of waste collected over the summer months and adjust collection frequencies accordingly. They would also monitor the effects on this on Cityclean’s operational capacity, which took a hit in July for a variety of reasons. This was not the news we were hoping to have for Hove Park going into July and August. This was not the plan.

separate and recyclable material was recoverable. When July arrived, the plan was changed. I guess the message for now is that, in spite of working with officers on this particular issue for months, we are no closer to getting new bins in the park so please take your rubbish home with you. SACKVILLE ROAD DEMOLITION BEGINS With demolition having started on 12 July, Moda, the developer, has appealed for local artists to express an interest in producing artwork for hoardings at the site which overlooks Sackville Road. Do get the word out. When the Big Yellow team made a call for artwork, we had in the region of 100 excellent submissions. TOADS HOLE VALLEY The recording of the public exhibition from July is available on the website so please take a look and come back with any queries or concerns: https://www.toadsholevalley.co.uk/online-exhibition Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen

Back in April (7 April to be precise), the position of officers was that proposals for alterations and additions to bins in Hove Park were being finalised once input from consulting internal stakeholders was completed. In May, officers noted in email correspondence (13 May) that operational risks identified during initial conversations around how best to empty the new bins were minor and that plans only required a slight change. One operational risk centred on multiple waste streams (litter, dry mixed recycling and glass), meaning that multiple collection teams were needed to ensure the waste streams were kept

27 This Hove Park resident has an unusual plant and we’ve seen another one of these in Derek Avenue…

The story of a local giant plant... If you have wandered along Hove Park Road recently, you may have noticed our Agave is doing something very strange at the moment.

HOVE PARK

This plant has been discussed many times in our household as I absolutely hate it and my husband loves it. It is a vicious beast which attacks anyone who dares to walk up the path to our front door. The spikes are razor sharp and it frequently needs to be cut back with a carving knife. It certainly has been a talking point locally recently. Grown for their striking appearance, these sculptural succulents are not supposed to withstand frost so are usually grown in conservatories or containers. It looks like my dreams will come true. The huge mast coming out of our plant is its swan song. Agaves are monocarpic and live between 10 and 20 years. The production of seeds is one colossal, fatal, lifegiving event. They flower only once, just before they die. It is already looking slightly withered (shame). It will produce some seeds which can be grown in a propagator or greenhouse. I will try really hard to harvest and dry the seeds and then leave for people to collect if they wish to wait 15 years for a similar experience. Please make sure your partner also wishes to grow a spiky, painful monstrosity in your garden. As a final gift, I believe the core of my plant could be made into tequila, however I would rather just buy a bottle. Anonymous of Hove

29 Local news…

Booth Museum now open The Booth Museum of Natural History in Dyke Road reopened on 31st July, with a new display that shows some of the recent big (but tiny) dinosaur discoveries in the collections during the lockdown.

In February 2020 Roy Smith of Portsmouth University visited the Booth Museum geological collections. He spotted several fossils donated by Arthur Griffith in 1912 identified as shark spines, that he thought were more likely to be pterosaur (flying reptile) bones. Roy discovered that the fossils had nerve holes which do not appear on shark spines, so must be from a group of flying reptiles known as Ornithostoma. He found a fragment of a jawbone of a previously undiscovered flying reptile that was possibly the size of a magpie. Unfortunately, this fragment is too small to base a new species on. The rocks it was found in have long since been broken up

HOVE PARK

For the first time, visitors can see a tiny fossil which has excited scientists after they discovered it had been previously mis-identified and is now believed to indicate a new species of pterosaur from the age of the dinosaurs.

and it is unlikely more of this specimen will ever be found. It remains a tiny tantalising glimpse of life 100 million years ago. The CEO of the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, Hedley Swain, said: “It’s fascinating to know that the items in the collection, many of which are millions of years old, are still relevant to modern experts and improve our knowledge of natural history.” Booth Museum, 194 Dyke Road. Free admission; open Mon, Tues, Wed & Sat 10am-5pm; Sunday 1-4pm; closed Thursdays & Fridays. Tel 03000 290900.

Flat conversion proposed An application has been made to convert offices at the Gemini Business Centre in Old Shoreham Road into 42 flats.

A transport statement prepared for the council says that the site is well located to promote sustainable travel and its residential use will be less intense in highway terms than office use. Eleven car parking spaces will be provided, as well as two visitor spaces.

31 This article is by John Rawlings of the Natural Medicine Practice…

Re-evaluating our approach to childhood fevers Recent findings from the three Royal Colleges of Medicine show that parents who have not previously experienced their children having a fever were taking them straight to A&E, rather than following the advice to seek help from their GP, pharmacy, or the option of the individualised, integrated approach of a qualified natural medicine practitioner.

Understandably, fevers can cause a scary time for both the parents and the child, but it helps to be informed first. Investing in a good quality clinical digital thermometer allows a parent to take their child’s temperature accurately. If a baby under three months has a temperature of 38C or higher, parents should immediately seek medical advice or bring the child into A&E. For babies of three to six months old the NHS benchmark is 39C. For under-twos, a fever of above 38C lasting for more than a day should be checked, as should fever spikes of 40C for a child of any age. It is vital that a child with fever be kept hydrated with plenty of cool but not chilled water, and if bathed it must be in tepid but never cold water, to avoid bringing on a chill. Babies of two to four months old often spike a fever - a naturally occurring fever often resolves itself as a cold, diarrhoea, or skin rash, as the toxins are eliminated from the system. From a natural medicine perspective, it is considered unwise to routinely block the beneficial natural process of fever, unless deemed necessary. The body raises its internal heat to impede the function of the pathogen(s) in an attempt to protect

GENERAL

The pressures on A&E departments this summer are comparable with those usually expected only in winter, and a significant proportion is due to parents bringing in young children with mild fevers that could be cared for effectively at home.

itself. Providing the fever is not above 39C and does not run for more than two or three days, it is preferable where possible and safe to allow the time for it to run its course without automatic recourse to suppressive measures, such as over the counter anti-inflammatories and pain killers. 32 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

A Victorian visionary in Hove With no holiday abroad for the second year running, this summer we explored spots closer to home - our staycation taking us aboard the legendary SS Great Britain which dominates the Bristol waterfront.

Brunel in 1857 (photo by Robert Howlett); and his SS Great Britain at Bristol

On her maiden voyage in 1843, this landmark vessel was not only the most powerful and technologically advanced ship on the planet but also the largest moving metal object. Her extraordinary design was the work of one of Britain’s greatest engineers - Isambard Kingdom Brunel and with it he transformed the future of shipbuilding. Since a boy, ships had fuelled Isambard’s imagination. In 1820, at the age of 14, whilst boarding at Dr Morell’s School just east of Hove Street, he wrote home to his mother: “I have been making half a dozen boats lately, till I’ve worn my hands to pieces.” One can imagine that his model-making was inspired by the fishing boats he observed in Hove and Brighton or the sailing ships with their tall masts at Aldrington Basin and Shoreham Port.

Almost two hundred years later, this son of an English mother and refugee father (fleeing revolutionary France) was voted the second greatest Briton of all time by the British public. By the time of his death in September 1859, Brunel’s limitless imagination and innovative engineering designs for tunnels, bridges, railway lines and ships had played a key role in contributing to the Industrial Revolution and shaping the way we still live today. To learn about the history of Hove, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative, and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover and uncover the area. To go on the mailing list, email: hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com.

33 Meet teacher and founder of Alta Academy of Dance, Deborah Mercer

A Passion for Dance Professionally trained dancer and teacher Deborah Mercer, who lives in Hove with her family, set up Alta Academy of Dance last year – a dance school with classes for all ages.

Why did you decide to set up a Dance School? I was keen to combine my passion for teaching and nurturing the next generation of dancers with my creativity and organisational skills. Alta was borne initially out of coaching my own daughter, as well as private lessons for a range of students and small group classes for those who wanted additional focus on their technique and artistry. This has now developed into a full timetable of classes for all ages! Tell us more about the school and classes available? We currently offer a range of ballet and PBT (ballet conditioning) classes for children and adults in venues in Brighton and Hove – some are purpose-built dance studios with sprung floors, mirrors and

barres and others are lovely, large community spaces. We also run workshops, repertoire classes, choreography, private lessons, exam coaching and audition preparation lessons (including photography and video).

GENERAL

Born and brought up in Hong Kong, I started ballet at the age of 5 on doctor’s orders to help with my asthma. I progressed through all my Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams and successfully auditioned for the HK Ballet Group where I performed group and solo roles alongside professional dancers. I subsequently trained at the world-renowned Académie Princesse Grace in Monaco, where I performed in shows at the Palais de Congrès and in an Operetta televised for French TV. My training continued at Rambert Ballet School (as it was known then) and I qualified as a teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance. I have been teaching in Brighton and Hove for many years ever since.

Photo: Birdy Peacock

What is your background?

This past year, our classes really helped everyone to stay connected and active and maintained training for those aiming for a career in dance. A bookshop with a difference... A bookshop with a difference has popped up in Cranbourne Street in central Brighton.

The project came about through a Brighton & Hove City Council initiative to offer vacant premises to arts organisations for a six-month period. Shaw and Creative Future Director Jane McMorrow spotted an opportunity to promote the work of established local writers and, at the same time, to develop a mentoring programme in which their skills and experience could nurture new voices from diverse backgrounds. Writers contributing to the project include Sharon Duggal, Elly Griffiths, Paul Burston, Vaseem Khan and Bethan Roberts, author of My Policeman, which is currently being made into a film set in Brighton starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee and Rupert Everett.

GENERAL

The Book Makers is a partnership between local author William Shaw, arts charity Creative Future and independent bookshop Goldsboro Books, and its aim is not just to sell books - although there are some wonderful titles on offer - but also to provide inspiration, practical support and a welcoming, creative space for emerging and under-represented writers. Photo by Kitty Wheeler Shaw

There will also be opportunities to discover new sources of creative inspiration, such as the Mass Observation Archive, plus sessions where writers can simply come together to work in peace. The project’s emphasis on inclusivity is reflected in the programme, with talks and events tackling themes of race, class, identity, health and wellbeing.

The Book Makers will be open from Wednesday to Saturday until the end of December this year, and is staffed entirely by volunteers. As well as some brilliant fiction, the shop stocks publications for writers, including those just starting out From this month, a programme of events subjects range from learning to read like a put together by Creative Future, New writer to getting an agent. And a small but Writing South and Writers Mosaic will take thoughtful collection of books for children place in the shop. The retail space will be and young adults ensures that there really transformed in the early evenings to host is something for everyone. 36 September is Recovery Month…

Local charity – Kennedy Street Clare Kennedy is the founder and CEO of local charity Kennedy Street CiO, which she set up with her actor husband Kevin Kennedy aka Curly Watts from Coronation Street and West End musical superstar. The charity offers support, signposting and connection to individuals, families and businesses interested in recovery from addiction. How did you come to set up Kennedy Street? Our charitable work started as a result of our own experience. When we started seeking recovery support 25 years ago, we didn’t know where to start or who to turn to; our GP at the time didn’t know what to do with us. Kevin was a very high functioning alcoholic and I was using drink and drugs to help me cope with the marriage I’d found myself in, or so I thought. To all the world looking in, we had it made, but what people didn’t know was alcohol, and drugs in my case, were destroying not only our lives but our marriage as well. Eventually, by sheer chance, we met someone who offered us some recovery guidance. At Kennedy Street we believe that free, person-centred guidance, support and recovery options should be easily accessible to EVERYONE. Can you help with any kind of addiction? Yes, we offer recovery support, signposting and connection to anyone interested in recovery for any kind of addiction including process addiction, eg gambling. Have the lockdowns led to more people needing your help? Yes, before the lockdown, we operated a small recovery outreach project in any free space we could find, offering life and business coaching skills. It’s easy to stop drinking and drug taking, but it’s difficult to stay stopped, so our primary focus was helping those choosing recovery to flourish. Then, when lockdown hit, a new service

emerged - a recovery helpline. Our phone line went from five calls to over 100 calls in a week. Because we are embedded in the recovery community, we were swiftly able to connect callers to freely available Zoom support groups. We also started to collate a national list of free and private recovery rehab support. What sort of people have you helped? 97% of the calls we have received over the last 18 months have been from functioning addicts, nurses, teachers, other frontline service providers, business owners, furloughed staff etc. Do you need any volunteers? Yes, we are always in need of volunteers - business volunteers primarily, preferably those with their own established careers who are looking to get involved with a start-up charity, eg marketing, social media or corporate partnership development. Who cares for the carer?

Our lives before the diagnosis were very different. I worked full time and Deborah worked part-time as a graphic designer and managed our home. She was always there for the children and made sure we were all fed and cared for. When we noticed Deborah’s memory issues, we went to our GP. Then, after a frightening experience of her blacking out, we were referred for a scan and to a dementia consultant. At this stage, I decided to go down to part-time work so I could help Deborah. She deteriorated rapidly in 2019 and last year I gave up work altogether. We now have carers coming in four times a day to help with personal care. Deborah is now blind, cannot walk or feed herself anymore, she cannot speak clearly and no longer recognises me as her husband. Every day brings new challenges, and sometimes I feel I am on a rollercoaster going so fast and unable to get off. I put my own health second, I have lymphoma, so my illness sometimes hinders my caring role. At times I feel completely burnt out and lost. In 2018 I came across Dementia Carers Count (DCC). I attended their three-day residential course designed for people caring for a relative or friend with dementia. As a charity, DCC doesn’t charge for their services. Initially, I was nervous but was warmly welcomed, and it was wonderful to meet other carers. The sessions were enlightening. I learned so much and came away feeling much more confident that I could care for Deborah. I particularly enjoyed the breathing exercises and

mindfulness skills. I struck up a friendship with the others on the course, it was great to share experiences, and we really bonded. I came away knowing that I needed to make time for myself and share the load if I could. I realised that I had stopped doing things for myself, even just reading. Now I take the time to go to the woods on my own, enjoy nature and listen to music. We don’t know how long Deborah has left, but she will stay in her home until the end. She is surrounded by people who love her, and I’m grateful to DCC for helping me on my journey. Howard Wade, 64, is an Ambassador for Dementia Carers Count. 43 News from the council…

Disposal of batteries Brighton & Hove City Council have reminded residents not to dispose of old, unwanted or dead batteries in their general waste or recycling.

Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “Thankfully no-one was injured, but the situation could have been far worse for the driver and crew, and potentially passers-by. The incident shows that batteries thrown into ordinary bins, household waste or with other recycling are extremely dangerous. They can easily get squashed, compacted, punctured, shredded or soaked in liquids. When this happens, they can ignite, resulting in fires that endanger lives, cause expensive damage and disrupt waste services. Damaged batteries are also dangerous as they contain chemicals and materials that can harm the environment if they aren’t recycled responsibly.” What to do with unwanted batteries: The council haven’t collected batteries for years, so instead they should be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Sites (near Old Shoreham Road, Hove, and off Wilson Avenue, Brighton) or dropped off at one of the many battery recycling points throughout the city, including most local supermarkets. You can also find your nearest recycling location at recyclenow.com by entering your postcode, town or city.

Batteries that can be recycled are: • All household batteries including ‘button’ batteries from watches • Battery packs from laptops, mobile phones, power tools and remote-control units • Car batteries should be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Sites You can also help by: • Using rechargeable batteries where possible • Selling or donating working, but unwanted, battery-powered electronic items instead of throwing them away. This can be done by contacting the reuse and recycle service RevaluElectricals by Tech-Takeback (techtakeback. com/revaluelectricals.html) • Removing a battery from a product and recycling it separately and responsibly If a battery cannot be removed from a product, the whole item should be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Sites, the council’s small electricals recycling points or RevaluElectricals by Tech-Takeback.

GENERAL

The advice comes after a bin lorry was set on fire in July because someone left a bag of household batteries in their rubbish. Some of the batteries exploded inside the waste holder which set alight other waste. To ensure the fire could be put out, the lorry had to tip the whole of its contents onto the road for the fire service to extinguish.

45 The Brighton Marathon is finally back on 12th September…

Events for older people…

Brighton Marathon 2021

Ageing Well Festival

This year’s Brighton Marathon takes place on Sunday 12th September, with the runners heading off from Preston Park after 9am.

The Ageing Well Festival 2021 in Brighton & Hove is set to return from 20th September to 4th October with a full and varied programme of events based around a Creative Ageing theme. With lengthy lockdowns leading to detrimental effects on people’s physical and mental health, and older people left more isolated than ever before due to Covid-19, it’s clear that we need opportunities to socialise and contribute to our community in order to maintain good overall health.

Throughout the weekend, a huge Beach Village will be installed next to the finish line in Madeira Drive for everyone to enjoy. The Beach Village will have a redesigned layout to create more space. There will be a few other changes this year to mitigate any risk from Covid-19. The start area in Preston Park has been redesigned so that runners are able to socially distance and they have been asked not to bring supporters to the park. This year’s BM Ride for cyclists has had to be cancelled in order to enable the start procedure for runners to be spaced out.

The festival provides fantastic opportunities to connect with friends, old and new, and most importantly have an abundance of much needed fun. The Ageing Well team have worked closely with colleagues in Public Health to bring this year’s festival, which is a mixture of online and live events to ensure there is something for everybody to enjoy safely. The programme is being distributed widely across the city. Check out the website for updates on events: ageingwellfestival.org

There will be a number of road closures on 12th September. For more information, visit brightonmarathonweekend.co.uk Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

51 News from the council…

PPE recycling scheme An innovative scheme to collect and recycle facemasks, gloves and other PPE has been launched in Brighton & Hove.

Brighton & Hove is the first city in the country to install the bins in public places. Residents and visitors can use the bins to dispose of used and unwanted PPE including facemasks, visors, gloves, protective clothing and even lateral flow tests.

GENERAL

The council has joined forces with recycling company Reworked to provide PPE recycling bins and hand sanitiser stations in busy areas of the city centre, including the popular SEA LIFE Centre, Komedia and i360.

Cllr Jamie Lloyd and Neil Harris of Sea Life Brighton

The bins have been funded from the government and European Union’s ‘Welcome Back’ fund, which aims to ensure city centres and seaside resorts are ready to welcome back visitors safely as lockdown restrictions ease. Councillor Jamie Lloyd, deputy chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, said: “Facemasks have played a vital role in helping to keep us safe during the past year, but sadly they have also added to the litter on our streets, particularly in busy areas of the city. It’s a particular concern on our seafront and beaches where the masks can make their way into the sea, causing further harm to our precious marine wildlife. But we are delighted to be working with Reworked to collect used and unwanted masks and other PPE, removing them from the waste stream for recycling. I hope residents will make good use of these bins, as they continue to wear their

masks when in busy areas and help to keep the city safe.” Once the bins are full, Reworked will collect and recycle the PPE to create hardwearing plastic boards. “It’s really important that only masks, gloves and other PPE are dropped off into the recycling bins, and that residents and visitors use our litter and general recycling bins for other waste,” added Councillor Lloyd. 55 The Brighton & Hove Food Partnership tell us about a Day of Action on 29 September…

A day to celebrate planet-friendly food Did you know that our food system is one of the biggest contributors to climate change? Here in the UK, food contributes up to 30% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we waste 10 million tonnes of food every year and 90% of fisheries are fully exploited or overfished.

In order to achieve the UK’s climate and other goals we must reduce levels of food waste and consumption of the most carbon-intensive foods.

photo by Karen Lloyd, chef at The Gardener

This means: • Eating less meat, of all types • Eating less cheese, and moderating milk consumption • Shifting the balance of the diet towards more plant-based foods, including plant-based sources of protein such as beans and pulses • Minimising food waste Less and better meat: As well as eating less meat and dairy, we can make a positive impact on our planet by buying from farms with high animal welfare standards and a low impact on nature and biodiversity. The simplest way of doing this is choosing products with a credible animal welfare certification such as RSPCA Assured, LEAF marque, organic or Pasture for Life. Join a low carbon lunch: Whether you are an individual eating lunch solo or an organisation serving food, you can join in on 29 September by organising a ‘low carbon lunch’.

A low carbon lunch is a meal with ingredients that have lower GHG emissions. It includes mostly vegetables, with high welfare meat, fish and dairy, and food sourced in ways that result in healthier and prosperous communities. A low carbon lunch will most certainly be a colourful lunch that is not only good for the planet but good for our health 2 and a feast to our taste buds. Post your photos on social media. Don’t forget to tag @btnhovefood and include the hashtags #lowcarbonlunch #Food4Planet and #FoodPartnership. Last thing to remember is to eat everything you cook or serve and if you can’t use it, take it home or give it to someone else. Additional resources: There are a number of excellent resources to help you adopt planet-friendly menus, including Friends of the Earth’s ‘Kale Yeah’ toolkit and the One Planet Plate project from the Sustainable Restaurant Association.

Bee Bus Stop in Palmeira Square

GENERAL

Brighton & Hove’s first plant-topped Living Roof Bus Shelter was officially ‘opened’ in Palmeira Square on 21st July.

The solar-powered shelter, also known as a ‘Bee Bus Stop’ has a roof planted with a mix of wildflowers and sedum plants, which are rich in nectar and a favourite of bees and other pollinating insects. As well as helping pollinators, the shelter will also absorb rainwater, support the city’s biodiversity and is powered entirely by solar energy. It’s also fitted with a smart lighting system, which only turns on the courtesy lighting when a passenger is present, further minimising its environmental impact. All elements of the new shelter are fully recyclable as it has been designed with principles of circular economy. This means at end of life nothing needs to go to landfill.

great; it will be a little haven for wildlife. I’d really like to see many more of them around the city. We all know that there has been a serious decline in biodiversity and insects. And the green roof on this bus stop is a perfect way to give nature a breathing space. But this is also about humans - pollinating insects are a key part of the food chain with so much of what we eat dependent on pollination. The Bee Bus Stop is just another example of how we’re working to improve the city’s biodiversity, climate and air quality year-round.”

The Bee Bus Stop’s installation follows quickly after a petition launched by Brighton & Hove resident Yazmin Muir which asked for Bee Bus Stops in the city after The shelter has been paid for, installed and seeing Clear Channel Living Roofs in Utrecht in the Netherlands. The petition has will be maintained by Clear Channel UK, who maintain the city’s bus stops and is the been signed by almost 50,000 people. Yazmin said: “I think they should be everyfirst of its kind in the south of England. where. I love living in Brighton & Hove and Haven for wildlife the more we can do to support the city’s Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty was environment and sustainability the better, there to help open the new shelter and and this is another great step.” said: “The new bus shelter doesn’t just look Have a local editorial item? 63 News on a decision to remove a temporary cycle lane…

Old Shoreham Road cycle lane

GENERAL

A meeting of an Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Urgency Sub-committee decided on 10th August that the temporary cycle lane on the A270 Old Shoreham Road in Hove should be removed as soon as reasonably practicable.

The Urgency Sub-committee was convened following a decision by the ETS Committee in July to remove the cycle lane. A city-wide consultation on temporary transport measures, provided with a grant from the Government’s Active Travel Fund, had shown many negative comments on the lane from car drivers. The sub-committee meeting allowed members to consider a report by council officers offering a detailed explanation of the factors involved in removing part or all of the cycle lane, including both equalities and financial implications. This report had recommended that the cycle lane be retained. It said that the removal of the cycle lane would have a negative impact on road safety, the environment, equality and funding opportunities, and could also damage the council’s ability to apply for further funding schemes in the future. Addressing the meeting, the Chair of the ETS Committee, Green councillor Amy Heley, said that removal of the lane was not in the best interests of the city and it was about much more than one cycle lane: “Only bold and brave decisions will

bring about the change needed to avoid a climate catastrophe.” Speaking for the Labour group, Cllr Gary Wilkinson commented: “We remain steadfast in our belief that it is important to uphold local democracy and the wishes of the people that we consulted in the exhaustive consultation that the Labour group proposed and asked for.” Conservative councillor Robert Nemeth told the committee that the process to introduce the cycle lane had been highly undemocratic and there had been thousands of complaints from residents living close to it about congestion, traffic, pollution, safety and lack of usage. He said: “I urge councillors and campaigners to think very carefully about the damage that is done when consultation is either not carried out, or simply ignored, especially when there are hopes for other schemes locally.” The Green group wanted the cycle lane to be retained, as recommended by council officers, but the Labour and Conservative groups voted for its removal.

Dance and circus theatre at Brighton Dome

Passagers plays with the fascination and freedom of travel, both nostalgic and symbolic. Even in a time when travel is restricted, it allows audiences to be transported to another world in which a colourful and diverse group of strangers meet on board a train. Through the course of their journey, in a temporarily-suspended reality, they get to know each other, sharing their stories and revealing their emotional states through virtuoso acrobatics - vaulting somersaults, breath-taking trapeze, daredevil balances on the highwire - and contemporary dance, narrative and song. A variety of ticket prices are available, including family groups. Passagers director Shana Carroll says: “Passagers was originally designed as an ode to travel - departure versus arrival, chance versus choice, familiar versus foreign, confinement versus border-crossing. The show has now taken on a whole new dimension I’m not sure I could ever have imagined. I hope it will make us treasure the days of simple, liberating travel and celebrate a return to greater freedoms.” Also performing at Brighton Dome in September are Brighton’s platinum-selling singer-songwriter Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg; singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist YUNGBLUD as part of his Life on Mars tour; as well as bands Hawkwind and Jethro Tull. Comedy in September includes Frank Skinner, Jimmy Carr, Chris Ramsey and

67 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

The myth of the paleo diet If you haven’t heard of it, the paleo diet is essentially a low-carbohydrate diet where you cut out all grains and dairy from your diet, which instead is made up of lean meat, fish, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables.

The closest living examples of how our ancestors lived are hunter-gatherer tribes such as the Hadza in Northern Tanzania. The bulk of their calories come from tubers and they consume a lot of honey. It’s the same old story – our modern lifestyles lead us to eat more calories than we use, of which many are made up of too many ultra-processed foods such as cakes, biscuits, pastries, and crisps. These convenience foods contain unnecessary additional salts, sugars and fats. Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight status is important and fad diets provide an attractive regime that we hope will help us reduce our energy intake to achieve this. However, fad diets cut out important food groups which carry with them essential micronutrients, never mind macronutrients like carbohydrates. Good complex carbohydrates are filling, help maintain steady blood sugar levels and provide us with a whole host of micronutrients like B-vitamins and fibres which we need to support our gut health. Really importantly, too little carbohydrate is bad not only for our bodies but our brains too, which predominantly rely on glucose. Too little carbohydrate can cause ‘brain fog’ and poor mental health. Paleo diets can also entice people to over-indulge in saturated fat, such as

A paleo diet

butter, or worse, coconut oil, and fats in general. Too much saturated fat leads to high cholesterol which is a risk factor for heart disease and other cardiometabolic illnesses. Lastly, too much protein is a bad thing for our bodies, never mind the planet. Excess protein will be broken down into calories which if not used are stored as fat. So, when looking for weightloss tips, check that your information is coming from an authoritative credible source like the Association for Nutrition or the British Nutrition Foundation. Finally, remember that nutrition is personal and differs whether you’re diabetic, need to shed many pounds or are maintaining weight.

It is based on the theory that these are the foods early humans ate and, therefore, which our bodies are designed to eat. There is no good evidence for this and, on the contrary, the latest research shows that grains were a part of our diets even before agriculture was established.

69 News from the council…

Hove Learning Federation West Hove Infant and Hove Junior schools will be working even more closely together as of next term.

The move is in part a response to a forecast reduction in primary age pupil numbers across the city over the coming years. But both schools also believe that bringing Connaught Road and Holland Road together onto one site would improve the learning experience for pupils and help maximise long-term financial viability. The chair of the council’s Children, Young People and Skills (CYPS) Committee, Councillor Hannah Clare, said: “I think the development of the Hove Learning Federation is an exciting opportunity. Both schools have a long history of working closely together and believe the proposed move from Connaught Road to Holland Road would be of benefit to both schools. “We are also acutely aware of falling pupil numbers across the city, and the need to plan strategically for the future to ensure the viability of all our schools. We anticipate a public consultation period starting in late September. We are mindful that it’s something that would affect families who will be going through the school admissions process for September 2022.”

GENERAL

The two schools will be run by a single governing body, known as the Hove Learning Federation, starting on September 10. They are also working with the council on the possibility of re-locating the infant school’s Connaught Road site onto the junior school’s Holland Road site before the end of the next academic year. Councillors will consider a report in September making a recommendation to undertake a full public consultation on the proposed site move.

West Hove Infant School, Connaught Road; photo © Simon Carey (cc-by-sa/2.0)

In a joint statement, the chairs of governors at West Hove Infant School and Hove Junior School - Julia Wolage, Louise Wilkinson and Lisa Marshall - said: “The proposed site move would enable us to provide a continuous learning provision from Reception through to Year 6 underpinned by a common ethos, vision and values. Our schools have a strong, cohesive working relationship and are looking forward to an exciting new chapter to further develop and deliver extraordinary education for our children.” It is anticipated that an in-principle decision would be made by the CYPS Committee in November after considering the feedback from the consultation. If the site move proposal receives final approval, the move would most likely happen early next year.

71 News from the Plant Your Postcode group…

What’s happening with street trees? At the moment we have an issue with our street trees: many are being felled, quite properly, because they’re unstable. They’re old or diseased, a legacy of Victorian planting and elm disease. But it’s proving difficult to replant them in our residential streets.

The council’s Tree Strategy is due to be published very shortly. . . let’s do everything we can to prevent our green city becoming a treeless and grey city. Let’s encourage our council to consider the planting and re-planting of our street trees as the very high priority it should be. plantyourpostcode.org Hove news…

Plant Your Postcode was set up to enable small communities to fundraise for trees in their local streets. However, replacing trees where there is an existing stump can cost thousands of pounds – the pavement and road may need to be resurfaced because of root damage for instance. We know that currently our council does not have the finances to replace all our disappearing street trees, and we know that there is a problem with expecting local communities to raise such large sums of money for replacement trees in their areas. We know the ecological and the psychological value of street trees: the calming effect of the greenery, the wildlife that trees attract, the reduction of noise as well as cleaning the air and providing shelter and shade. There’s also a financial benefit: did you know for instance that a

73 It’s the end of the summer season at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

September at the Brighton Open Air Theatre The acclaimed Brighton Shakespeare Company are finally back at the BOAT this month with Julius Caesar, a timeless classic of corruption, murder and mayhem (8-11 September). There’s also a fearless adaptation of Richard II by Quandary Collective (15-18 September).

The Great Gatsby is an evening of jazz, prohibition-style, with Heartbreak Productions and the Nick Carraway quartet. Nick is not only the band leader but a top-notch storyteller, and when he’s in the mood he can take you back to the summer of 1922 when he lived next door to none other than the infamous Jay Gatsby (1-2 September). For families, Terry Deary’s Twisted Tales is a brand new original comedy by the author of Horrible Histories. Three actors perform over 100 roles in as many minutes of fact-based fun, with Mr Pimm, a Victorian schoolteacher, battling against all odds to teach his pesky pupils a thing or two with hilarious consequences (3 September). In Between Spaces by Signdance Collective is a story investigating identity in the age of transient digital glitches. It centres on five characters who perambulate in a world outside of time. The show is accessible for deaf and hearing audiences and has both creative subtitling and sign theatre throughout the production, which are integral to the performance (22 September).

GENERAL

There’s an innovative production of The Hound of the Baskervilles by British Touring Shakespeare (12 September) and the National Production Company present Jekyll and Hyde – a show which stays true to the original tale whilst embracing the comedic magic of theatre in a hilarious, fast-paced spin (25 September).

The Down for the Count Swing Orchestra

There’s also Open Air Cinema with Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe (23 September). Music this month includes a Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, with four classics presented by Opera Anywhere: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and Patience, all in one weekend (4-5 September). You can join the Down for the Count Swing Orchestra as they celebrate the Legends of Swing in their own unmistakeable style – expect songs from the likes of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald (19 September). Brighton’s own The Alter Eagles return to BOAT on 24 September, and the Brighton Beach Boys are back to close the season with a wide collection of the harmonies created by Brian Wilson (26 September). The day will culminate in a civic service/ performance event with readings, musical contributions from a variety of choirs, filmed stories and tributes from city dignitaries.

75 News from CPRE Sussex…

Join the CPRE Sussex Hedgerow Hike Everyone is invited to join the Hedgerow Hike to celebrate hedgerows, get some exercise and help raise funds for CPRE Sussex, the countryside charity.

Every step or mile for which you are sponsored will help CPRE Sussex to protect the Sussex countryside and our city green spaces. You could ask for sponsorship at as little as £1 a mile or even 5,000 steps. “Hedgerows are vitally important,” says CPRE Sussex Director Kia Trainor. “They are major features of the Sussex landscape and essential habitats supporting over 2,000 species, including our muchloved hedgehogs and dormice.” Hedgerows also help in the fight against climate change. Each year a new hedgerow can absorb the amount of carbon produced by a car travelling over 620 miles. With their leaves at the level of pedestrians, hedgerows are natural barriers

to harmful air pollution in our streets – making our towns healthier places. Join the Hedgerow Hike at: www.cpresussex.org.uk/hedgerow-hike/ and sign up by requesting a sponsorship form or setting up a Just Giving page.
