A local update…

Friends of Stoneham Park You wait ages for something exciting to happen in Stoneham Park and then, like London buses, three come along at once! We have had a very busy and enjoyable few weeks putting on entertainment and events in the park. In late September we were pleased and proud to host the fabulous children’s story-telling show, There’s a Tiger in the Garden, which played three packed-out shows to delighted youngsters on the Saturday. The next day, in glorious sunshine, we were honoured to host the acclaimed Hangleton Brass Band in the park as they played their first live show together since March last year. It was a privilege to see them all playing so beautifully. The free afternoon concert was really appreciated by everyone who was in attendance. The second of the open air cinemas was scheduled to have screened Back to the Future on 22 October. At the time of going to press we

are still hoping the weather will stay dry and the wind is no more than a gentle breeze. We will let you know how we get on! Further good news is that Stoneham Park has retained its Green Flag Award for another year. This prestigious award is held by only two other parks in Hove and slightly more in Brighton. One of the things the judges look out for is community engagement and, surely, that is something on which we score highly. With the Friends successfully lobbying for a new basketball backboard, holding monthly tidy-up sessions, getting murals painted, and putting on all these entertainments for the local community, the park fully deserves this award. And as rubbish piles up on the streets all around due to the refuse workers’ strike, it was us who persisted in asking the council to give us weekend rubbish collections from the bins in the park, which has meant it has been kept clean and tidy during these difficulties. We will be meeting in person (all being well) at 19.30 on Monday 8 November. If you would like to attend, please check our website for details. Richard Hearnden www.friendsofstonehampark.uk

Meet a local resident who loves singing with as many people as possible…

Poets Person…Eugény Couture Eugény Couture lives on Sackville Road in Hove. She runs the Singing Mamas mother and baby support group at Hove Methodist Church and is also a therapist at the Tree of Life Centre in Portland Road. How long have you lived in Hove? I moved from Bath to Hove in March 2017. Tell us about Singing Mamas… Singing Mamas is a national movement which empowers women to improve their well-being by creating song-sharing communities. Our child-friendly group in Hove is open to every woman, with or without children. We gather every Wednesday from 10.00am during termtime, sing for an hour, then have half an hour of social time where we share tea and home-baked cake together. No audition, no sheet of music, no experience needed: we sing a-cappella and every song is taught by ear. Do you do any other singing? I do: I’ve been singing in choirs for about three decades now, which is most of my life if you consider I am about to turn 36! I am currently singing soprano in the Brighton Festival Chorus. By the time this is published, our next concerts will probably be Verdi’s Requiem in Coventry on the 13th November 2021, followed by our annual Christmas concert at the Dome in Brighton on the 12th December 2021. What is your favourite kind of music? Any choral work by Ola Gjeilo or Eric Whitacre. But as you may guess, my absolute favourite thing is to share songs with as many people as possible. For that reason, I’ve got a very soft spot for folk and traditional tunes. The ones you sing around the fire, the ones which have been passed on orally, which talk of the land, its

inhabitants and its traditions... I try to bring this flavour to my Singing Mamas group. What kind of therapies do you practise at the Tree of Life Centre? I originally trained in Body Massage and have added many specialities to my practice over the years: Aromatherapy (which I also teach as a tutor at Brighton Holistics), Hot and Cold Stones, Pregnancy & Post-natal Recovery Massage, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Oncology Massage... I am currently on a little break but will be back in December, so feel free to call the centre on 01273 220159 to book in advance. To find out more about Singing Mamas or book a free taster session, email Eugeny@singingmamaschoir.com or visit https://www.singingmamaschoir.com/

Local Poets Corner news…

Poets Corner news… Road safety petitions Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Sustainability & Transport Committee, meeting on 21 September, considered several petitions calling for improved road safety in the Portland Road area.

Petition for 20mph speed limit on Portland Road A petition started in May by Cllr Robert Nemeth and signed by 687 people asked for a 20mph speed limit to Portland Road, as well as increased patrols to tackle dangerous parking. The response from the committee chair, Cllr Amy Heley, was that it would not be possible to prioritise a speed limit reduction scheme of this type, based on the current casualty history for Portland Road. However, she said that council officers are in the process of reviewing the current Road Safety Strategy and this review will look at an updated approach to the management of speeding concerns. The council are also in the process of developing a series of road safety improvements for the Portland Road corridor. The improvements will include build-outs and/or raised tables at six junctions and works are planned to begin in November. Cllr Heley said that Portland Road is visited several times per day by enforcement officers and these patrols would be increasing. She concluded: “The administration is supportive of more 20mph roads in the city so I am proposing not only to receive the Road Safety Strategy report, but also one more specifically to assess feasibility for 20mph on Portland Road and similar roads.”

Portland Road crossing petition A petition started in May by former Green Party councillor Christopher Hawtree asked for the pedestrian crossing close to Westbourne Street to include buttons and lights to halt the traffic, following a serious accident there. The petition was signed by 323 people. Cllr Heley replied that this request would be included as a priority for assessment in next year’s 2022-23 pedestrian crossing programme.

Marmion Road traffic calming 173 people signed a petition asking for traffic calming measures on Marmion Road, linking to School Road. The petitioners said that the road had become a cut-through. In her response, Cllr Amy Heley said that the council had a great many requests for traffic calming schemes. As there had been no recorded injury-causing collisions in the road in the last three years, Marmion Road could not be prioritised. However, she said that other schemes planned in the vicinity should help to reduce traffic volumes and speeds. The committee requested a report on the issue.

10 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

Westbourne Councillor News As we all try to get back to some form of normal, after a difficult 18 months we’re really pleased to say that as part of boosting our local shops in Westbourne Ward we have secured finance for a range of measures in Richardson Road and Portland Road. We want to encourage residents to shop local and we want them to have a great experience doing so, hence it’s called the ‘welcome back fund’. Soon you will see a range of measures such as plants, Christmas lights, artwork and seating areas appearing to make our patch more warm and pedestrian friendly. We hope it encourages you to shop local for Christmas! Unfortunately there has been a lot of reports to us about crime and anti-social behaviour. Car crime seems to be particularly prevalent in Westbourne. So we’re joining forces with the local neighbourhood watch to hold a public meeting about the Chris at the Kingsway to the Sea display with issue and to try and strengthlandscape architect Fenella Griffin en our community resolve to say ‘enough is enough’. Many of you have told https://www.sussex.police.uk/reportcrime us your problems and we’ve tried to help. In September we joined the council officers and held a public display and consultation regarding the proposed improvements to the Western Esplanade seafront. It was a very successful turn out and everyone’s feedback was really interesting. We really want to give some TLC to the historic stretch as well as improve the health and wellbeing facilities and offer something for families.

One thing we wanted to say was ‘thank you’ for tolerating the problems and also that we have fed all your comments to the Chief Exec and the Leader of the Council. Hopefully, you will see an improvement as we head into winter. Chris and Carmen Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Healthy Neighbourhood Fund At our end of September meeting, we heard from groups who had received grants last year from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund - The Friends of Hove Lagoon, Hove Beach Croquet Club, Purple People Kitchen, the Secret Garden Group and Stoneham Bakehouse. The Secret Garden Group behind St Leonard’s Church built a gazebo, as well as buying tools and a wheelbarrow. The gazebo, which has a living roof, has proved very useful for groups wanting to meet outside under shelter – for example a book group and a choir. It was built by local gardener Dan Boorman.

ment manager and one of the technical team. The project is expected to be completed by next March and the new lighting operational in advance of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations on 2 June 2022, so that the beacon can be lit up for the occasion.

Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan The Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan was approved by the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee at its last meeting in September. An external assessor will now be appointed to examine the plan next year. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 24th November, details to be confirmed. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

Hove Beacon Brighton & Hove City Council have pledged £15,000 for a lighting installation at Hove Beacon, at the western end of the Western Esplanade, as first proposed by Cllr Robert Nemeth. They have invited entries from artists and say the main aim is to relight the beacon using a low maintenance lighting scheme and to help build on the distinctive beauty of this part of the seafront. The lighting scheme will help to ensure the area is well used in the evening, creating an ambience that’s in keeping with the surrounding area. Shortlisted candidates were due to be interviewed by a panel in the last week of October. The three-member panel will include one local resident, David Flack of the Friends of Hove Lagoon, as well as the council’s Arts DevelopHave a local editorial item? Mast applications Two planning applications have been submitted by CK Hutchison Networks for new 5G phone masts in Westbourne ward.

Dental practice proposed An application has been made by Hove Dental Clinic, who have other premises in the city, to change part of Wish Park Surgery’s premises in Portland Road into a dental practice.

The proposed site for the New Church Road mast

English Heritage have objected to an 18 metre mast which is proposed to be located outside 21 New Church Road (TwentyOneDental), close to Hove Museum. CK Hutchison Networks say: “There is an acute need for a new base station to provide effective service coverage and in this case the height of the proposed street pole is the minimum required to bring the benefits of 5G to this area.” They say the new mast will assimilate well into the immediate street scene and not be detrimental. However, English Heritage have said that the installation would be a prominent element in the historic streetscape and would also impact the settings of the Grade II listed Jaipur Gate and locally listed Hove Museum and Art Gallery. Other potential sites in Princes Square, Pembroke Gardens, Westbourne Street, Aymer Road and Westbourne Villas were all investigated but discounted as unsuitable. A 15 metre mast has been proposed to go outside 123-125 Portland Road, outside Sainsbury’s Local. You can find the applications on the council’s planning register at: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk Search for BH2021/03099 for the New Church Road mast or BH2021/03284 for the Portland Road mast.

West Hove news…

The dental practice would be on the first floor, with a separate ground floor entrance and reception. This part of the building has been vacant since the building was built in 2015. No external alterations are proposed and Wish Park GP Surgery would be unaffected. The application details are at planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk (application BH2021/03115). 17 News from local charity Off The Fence…

Local news…

Organised by Rachel Potter, Soulful Saturday on 4th September at the Glebe sports ground, West Hove, was a roaring success. It was the first fundraiser organised by Rachel Potter (wife of Seagulls Manager Graham Potter - our new patrons) for 50+ people paying £35 each for a morning of Pilates and meditation with a veggie brunch, as a gift from Kleen Kitchen. The total raised was a magnificent £4,648. The event was supported by dozens of parents from St Christopher’s School and Laine Pub Company. Roy Stannard of Off The Fence was delighted: “Around 15 homeless members of our community die on the streets of Brighton & Hove each year. The average life expectancy is 47 for men, and 49 for women. However, Brighton & Hove is known for its compassion and inclusivity across all its communities and this demonstrates once again that we see ourselves as one city with a shared concern for its most vulnerable members.”

At the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee on 21 September, Cllr Robert Nemeth asked what the council was doing to tackle the proliferation of barley grass in parks and on pavements, to ensure the safety of dogs.

Barley grass is currently very noticeable at Hove Lagoon and the sharp-pointed seeds can cause pain and infection when they get into a dog’s bloodstream. The response of committee chair Cllr Amy Heley was that barley grass has always grown within our parks and on verges and when councillors decided in 2019 to restrict the use of glyphosate to remove weeds, it was made clear that there would be more weeds as a result. Cllr Heley said that grass areas are being managed as natural green spaces with reduced mowing. This means the barley grass is now more evident.

Rachel Potter leading the Pilates morning

Every penny will be used by Off The Fence to help the homeless, vulnerable children and those who suffer domestic abuse.

However, Cllr Heley reported that Cityparks are now trialling yellow rattle at Easthill Park: “This is a semi-parasitic plant which feeds off the nutrients and the roots of nearby grasses. By feeding off the grasses it encourages wildflowers to grow. If the trial is a success the team can look to roll out in other areas.”

21 Hove resident Carly Rhodes has recently set up a new well-being business…The Haven in Hove

WEST HOVE

A Haven from the Stresses of Life

What is the Haven in Hove? The Haven in Hove is exactly as the name suggests! Somewhere to come and find a haven from the everyday stresses and strains of life. The Haven is set within my own home. We have a beautiful wood fired sauna in the garden, as well as a wonderful decked area to rest between saunas, where you can sit around the fire-pit or relax in a hammock. We also have a large indoor studio, that we use for classes and treatments. What made you decide to start this business? The sauna was originally built for our family’s use. The idea for The Haven in Hove was born whilst sitting in the sauna. I had felt the enormous physical and mental benefits for myself, and decided I wanted to share this with other women. It is easy to neglect one’s own needs when you are busy with life, however selfcare is essential. Without giving oneself time to heal, replenish and rest, you can become over-whelmed and exhausted. I speak from experience, having personally suffered from burnouts. To avoid this happening again, I have learnt to prioritise rest and relaxation and have found the sauna an invaluable way to achieve this. A sauna

feels like a refuge from the world. Somewhere to go with no phones, a place to connect to others and myself, not to mention all the good it does for your physical and mental well-being. After the difficult time a lot of people have had of late, now more than ever, we need to make sure we take good care of ourselves, especially over the winter months. What will you have on offer? As well as hiring the sauna out to groups of women, I will be holding various workshops, classes and retreats in my quest to encourage people to adopt regular self-care into their lives. The next retreat will be held on Sun 21st November, We also have a sound bath sauna experience on 11th Dec. See our website for further information. I cannot wait to share this wonderful space with women and help them to fill their own cups, as without doing so, you cannot fill the cups of others. 23 News from the Friends of Hove Park…

A tale of two trees Whilst long appreciating trees for their beauty, timber and fruits we are becoming increasingly more aware of their importance to our mental and physical wellbeing and help in tackling the climate crisis.

HOVE PARK

Trees absorb and lock up carbon, intercept pollution, aid flood prevention by soaking up water run-off, heal soils, and succour native wildlife. Woodland and urban trees are both important, the latter increasingly being regarded as economic assets rather than budget sapping burdens. Trees are trending! Unfortunately the UK has extremely sparse tree cover with very little in good ecological condition (woodlandtrust. org.uk/SOWT). However there are new funding provisions and transformative and visionary tree planting drives - aiming to plant the right tree in the right place, for the right reason, in the right way (certainly not dense monoculture conifer plantations on ancient peat bogs). Woodland should provide varied habitat with closely wooded groves, open wooded habitat, and grassy or scrubby glades with scattered trees. The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a tree planting initiative marking Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. It invites people in the UK to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.” In 2012 during the tree planting drive celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee a young elm was planted in Hove Park near Riptide. RUBBISH STRIKE HGV drivers in the council’s refuse and recycling service Cityclean started strike action on 5 October. Up to 54 refuse and recycling lorry drivers went on strike. Expect delays to collections well into November so please do get in touch if you continue to experience missed collections. Residents have been saying as early as September that bins had not been emptied for weeks so please let us know of any issues so we can escalate to officers. If your garden waste collection was missed due to the strike, your subscription will be extended. CITIZENS BRIGHTON AND HOVE I attended on 14 October the Citizens Assembly focusing on mental health across the city held with the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. If mental health is a concern to you then please let us know so we can connect you to experts who can help. TOADS HOLE VALLEY The applicant still remains in discussion with the council as local highway authority and National Highways. These discussions have taken some time but are nearly concluded. Until they are, no specific committee date can be targeted. The recording of a public exhibition from July is at this link: https://www. toadsholevalley.co.uk/online-exhibition ALDI The Aldi supermarket application at Court Farm on KGVI Avenue has been formally submitted to the council. Site work will ramp up over the coming months so help us to help you mitigate the impact on your home. ZONE P The Council’s bi-annual citywide Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was published in September proposing minor changes across the Zone based on specific requests from residents in streets such as The Droveway, Benett Drive, Shirley Drive and Woodland Drive. If no objections are received the order will be sealed and the changes implemented by the council. ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS The public EV charging infrastructure is not in a good state so any feedback you have that we can pass onto officers would be helpful. 29 This article is by John Rawlings of the The Natural Medicine Practice…

A healthier life after Covid-19 One of the many issues concerning people in these strange days is how to treat what has become known as Long Covid, continuing symptoms suffered by those who appeared to recover from the virus but who have not got back to what they describe as ‘normal’.

These symptoms can be varying levels of fatigue, breathlessness, muscle or joint pain, abdominal problems, anxiety, and ‘brain fog’, but how can these draining effects be alleviated? Guidelines issued by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have instructed doctors not to keep offering painkillers to those with chronic primary pain, but to prescribe exercise and acupuncture instead. For those in recovery but not up to a stroll along the seafront or on the South Downs, a short walk around the block will get you started, daily if possible, which can be gradually increased if you are up to it. Any exercise is better than none, but be kind to yourself.

GENERAL

CFEA practitioners are witnessing far more complete recoveries in their patients after even a few treatments. As we move into autumn and winter, involving exercise and natural health approaches can help shift the balance of health positively into feeling well again, after all the extraordinary challenges posed by Covid-19. 33 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

Poets Corner and The Great War

Barely a family or community across Great Britain escaped the First World War untouched by terrible loss. The Hove Roll of Honour lists 631 names; many hailing from a tiny working-class community in Hove these days popularly dubbed ‘Poets’ Corner’. Poets’ Corner was unique in some ways: bordered by three hospitals for injured soldiers, locals were confronted with the horrific personal consequences of war on a daily basis; it was home to Brighton & Hove Albion footballers who joined the Footballers’ Battalions; what the poet W. H. Auden called ‘the greatest book about the first world war’ was written less than a mile away by David Jones (who is remembered along with 15 other Great War poets at Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey); and, with a prisoner of war camp just around the corner, German soldiers marching along to work on the local farms and at the gas works would have been a familiar sight. But, in other ways, it provided a microcosm of the tragedy that was happening all over Sussex and the rest of the country. Its soldiers fought in all the branches of the armed forces and are

buried in Flanders Fields and as far away as Macedonia, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Egypt and the North Atlantic. In Sussex, many men joined the Southdowns Battalions of the Royal Sussex - the Pals battalions in which friends, brothers, team-mates and colleagues all joined up together. Within a few short hours of going over the top at the Battle of Boar’s Head on 30th June 1916, the casualties were so severe that it came to be known as ‘The Day that Sussex Died’. “Poets Corner & The Great War” walking tour tells the story of these men and their community in Hove during the years 1914-18, includes poetry and art, as well as lighter aspects such as Jelly Babies! Hove Actually Walking Tours will commence again in Spring 2022. To join the mailing list, email hoveactuallywalks@gmail.com Rachel Bridgeman Tour guide & local historian Hove Actually Walking Tours

36 A local resident who is trying to keep children safer along the seafront…

The Sea Safety Project My name is Becky Knights and I have been a primary school teacher for 17 years. When my twins were born I ventured into the world of supply teaching and have been fortunate over the years to have worked in some wonderful and inspiring schools across Brighton and Hove. During our most recent lockdown in January, like the whole community, we despaired when we found out that we had a lost a lovely member of our community – Gareth Jones and his dog Connie - to the sea. Heartbroken by such tragic events I decided to use my teaching expertise to think carefully about how I could use the curriculum to support children’s learning in Sea Safety. I approached Chris Ingall, Seafront Office Operations Manager, and using Chris’s knowledge designed a PowerPoint highlighting the dangers of our coastline and how to keep children safe whilst enjoying our beaches and the sea. I am hugely grateful to Chris and the Seafront Office Team who have given their time to support my workshops and have since endorsed my Sea Safety Project. I am also thankful to have had support from Gabbi Simmonds who is the RNLI Regional Water Safety Education Manager, who has shared her many years of experience too. My workshops include lots of vital information encompassing learning about tides, waves, flags, wind, lifeguarded beaches, signage and other information pertinent to our beaches. Through role play we learn what to do should you suddenly fall into water, using the RNLI’s important slogan ‘float to live’, and show the children what position they need to take should they get into difficulty. At the end of every workshop the children have the chance to design their own sea safety sign. Children’s illustrations are

The Year 5 children at St Andrew’s enjoying lifeguard duty

very striking and a great talking point and I think it would be wonderful if we could make their work a permanent feature along our seafront. I have also thought about how we could incorporate a QR code onto their signs too, to include information regarding tide times and weather, so if you’re local or a visitor for the day you have access to the key information straight away. I’m rolling out the Sea Safety Workshops to three schools so far across Brighton & Hove with hopefully more to follow soon. I walk our dog daily along Hove Promenade so please do stop to say hi and have a chat about your experiences of our seafront and if there’s anything else we can do to make it a safer environment for all to enjoy. The local community can follow me on @sea_safety @theseasafetyproject

39 News from the Brighton & Hove Jewish Community of a visit to the New Church Road site…

Shadow Culture Secretary visits Jewish hub BNJC (Brighton and Hove Jewish Community) and Brighton & Hove Hebrew Congregation were delighted to host a contingent of guests attending the Labour Party Conference in Brighton for a tour to spotlight the importance and value of the city’s Jewish future, and its past.

The contingent first visited the new Jewish community development in New Church Road, Hove (BNJC), where CEO Marc Sugarman hosted a hard hat tour of the site. Still under construction and on track to open next summer, the community development aims to revitalise Jewish life in Brighton & Hove by building the infrastructure for Jewish life. Delicious Kosher dining, a beautiful new synagogue and mikvah, superb education, co-working facilities and a rich programme of cultural events provide every opportunity for the community to thrive.

GENERAL

Guests included Jo Stevens MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Claudia Mendoza, CoChief Executive of the Jewish Leadership Council, and Marie van der Zyl, President of the Board of Deputies.

41 News from the council…

Jubilee Clock Tower restoration Brighton & Hove City Council have been restoring parts of the Jubilee Clock Tower. Work began on the Grade II listed landmark at the end of September by the same team who have been working on Big Ben in London. The clockworks themselves have been inspected with some of the parts being removed for servicing and repair. These include both the internal and external clock mechanisms and replacing the missing hand.

Brighton & Hove’s history. These works will mean that the clock will once again be working, instead of being right just twice a day.”

Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “It’s so important we take care of landmarks which are such an iconic part of

The Jubilee Clock Tower was donated to the city in 1888 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee the year before.

GENERAL

The next phase involved re-lettering the faded and missing letters from the clockfaces followed by the replacement of the bird prevention netting with steel mesh and, where possible, without the use of spikes. The steel mesh is being used following advice from the RSPB and helps prevent birds becoming trapped. Work was scheduled to finish around the end of October.

Consultation on cycle hangars People in Brighton & Hove are being given the chance to have their say on the installation of 100 new cycle hangars. The hangars would be used for residents to park their bikes securely near their home where they don’t currently have space. With many people living in shared accommodation where storage space is at a premium, it can be difficult for many people to safely store their bikes. The cycle hangars are approximately the size of one parking space and can store six standard sized bicycles. There will be an annual cost of £50 - £70 per year for each space.

The council are now in the early stages of planning where they should be installed and this survey is designed to assess demand for secure on-street cycle parking that will be solely reserved for residents. The cycle hangar scheme will be rolled out in stages following further consultation through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). The survey closes on 14 November and you can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove. gov.uk/parking/cycle-hangar-survey

43 Meet Major Mandy Sands…

New minister at Hove Salvation Army Major Mandy Sands is the new minister at Hove Salvation Army, based in Conway Street. In August she replaced Michelle and Doug Hayter, who had been in the role for 16 years.

GENERAL

What is your background? I am originally from South London. I started to attend The Salvation Army as a child and, as my Christian faith developed, I realised that its motto, ‘With heart to God and hand to man’, resonated with me, and I eventually became an Officer in 1988. I have served in various areas since then with my husband, Chris, including Leicester, Nottingham, Skegness and most recently Canterbury. Each city and town had its own challenges and delights. I love getting to know people, both in the church and the community, and journeying with them through life.

Are you running your Christmas Present Appeal this year? Absolutely! Christmas is a time to show How have you found your move to Hove? kindness and love. result in just 15 minutes. The kits are for people WITHOUT SYMPTOMS who want to check their sexual health or HIV status. The venues for the new vending machines are: •

The Jubilee Library, which is run by the council

Portland Road, Hove, between Wish Park Surgery and Kamsons Pharmacy

the Wellsbourne Centre, Whitehawk

the Brighton Sauna, and

the Black & Minority Ethnic Community Project Centre on Fleet Street.

The initiative is being run jointly by the Martin Fisher Foundation and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty has welcomed the new service. He said: “Brighton & Hove is a HIV Fast Track City – which means we’re working together to end all new cases of HIV by 2030. For this to happen, everyone at risk of HIV needs to take an HIV test and be aware of their HIV status. Having free testing kits more readily available will help us achieve this goal. We have some of the best HIV support, treatment, and prevention services and community organisations in the country. And I’m delighted that the Jubilee Library is one of the venues for this vital new service.”

47 Catherine Duffy on the benefits of reclaiming and retaining strength and fitness for women post-menopause…

It’s never too late! Sooner or later all women hit the menopause and, along with the psychological impacts of the reduction of female hormone production (oestrogen and progesterone), our bodies can really feel it too. As well as other physical changes, during and after menopause our bone density can diminish rapidly, leaving us at risk of our bones weakening, and of developing osteoporosis potentially breaking bones. This is where exercise to support bone health is key.

The NHS recognises the benefits and these are some: • It can help us to retain functional fitness, so carries over benefits into daily living – think of the carrying of shopping, of children, shifting furniture, decorating. Stronger arms, back and legs helps to stave off niggles and aches. • It can make us feel happy! It is well documented that exercise releases endorphins that help to make us feel good.

GENERAL

While all exercise is good for women of all ages, strength training (exercise using body weight or additional weights) in particular really comes into its own during and after menopause, as it is particularly beneficial in strengthening muscles and, through that, building denser, stronger bones.

• Strength training can help us to regain the strength to do the things we used to do – to play like we did as girls – remember trampolines, handstands and cartwheels? (I know - pelvic floors and trampolines are not necessarily compatible!) You truly do not need to be fit, or strong, or be anyone’s idea of slim to start strength training.

• It can help us to sleep – sleep disturbance And please don’t worry that strength trainis a well-known factor during menopause. ing makes you bulky – you’d have to work like Arnold Schwarzenegger for many • It can help with keeping us a healthy years – our bodies and our hormones just weight. 55 News from the council…

Corn Exchange restoration The latest stage in the refurbishment of Brighton Dome Corn Exchange has seen the completion of extensive repairs to keep the 200-year-old Grade I listed building safe, and preserved as part of the city’s history.

Following 18 months of works, the scaffold has been removed to reveal the original wooden beams, restored to the designs by architect William Porden for the Prince Regent as his riding house in the early 1800s. Architect Tim Healy, from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, who is over-seeing the design of the project, said: “The Corn Exchange is a unique historic building dating back to the Regency period, and to some extent we didn’t know what to expect when first investigating the 18-metre structural timber frame. Once the layers of paint were removed, we could better understand the condition of the original structure. We were able to find an engineering solution that meant the frame could be repaired and strengthened to make it structurally sound, as well as housing essential production equipment such as the lighting and audio rigs. Seeing the repairs completed and the building restored to Porden’s designs has been really truly rewarding.” Roman numerals During the restoration, Roman numerals were found carved into the wood by car-

penters who would have had the skilled task of assembling the heavy beams into the roof. The numbers enabled the workers to interpret the architect’s plans, with each timber identified in the correct order before being fitted into position. Additional improvements to the Corn Exchange interior have included sustainable oak cladding along the length of the walls and roof arches, with pilaster columns recreated from archive drawings. Andrew Comben, Chief Executive, Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, said: “We’ve always known the Corn Exchange is one of the city’s architectural gems and this transformation has been a milestone moment for the project. The spaces are starting to take shape as refurbished venues, that not only respect their historic importance but will also offer new and improved facilities for the public to see a wide range of artforms and for artists to enjoy performing here or making new work in the designated creative space.”

57 News from a new community group…

Friends of Knoll Park

GENERAL

We are very excited to announce that Knoll Park has a newly constituted Friends Of Knoll Park group, set up with the aim of working to look after and improve the park alongside other local groups, and with guidance from park rangers from Brighton and Hove City Council.

The park is a much valued local space for many people, and plays an important role in our community, and our hope is that by working with the council and local groups, and finding funding opportunities, we can play our part in protecting and improving the area, having a positive impact on the environment and promoting the use of the park as a resource for all members of our community. We have already begun holding monthly litter picks - last month we were delighted to see a wide range of volunteers at our after-school litter pick, including adults, small children with their parents, and some brilliant teens from the youth club it is wonderful to see the different people who use the park coming together to improve their environment! We are about to start work on a longterm plan based on feedback from local residents, having recently completed a

consultation to find out how people feel about the park, from which we have collected over 230 responses, which is fantastic - we have been really eager to get feedback from a broad cross-section of local residents! We know the park is used in so many different ways, from families dropping into the playground after school, to the daily dog walkers, the bowls club users and football teams and the young people taking part in the youth activities provided by HKP at the pavilion, and we want the park to be a welcoming environment for everyone! We have lots of great plans and ideas in the early stages and you can keep an eye on events and what is going on in our park community via our social media pages on Instagram and Facebook. You can also contact the group on friendsofknoll@gmail.com to get involved or if you have any questions/comments for the group.

News from Martlets hospice…

Stranded fish

Martlets CEO to step down Imelda Glackin will be stepping down as CEO from her role at Martlets in 2022.

GENERAL

Hovarian reader Mark Barnham sent in this great photo, taken in September.

Imelda has worked at Martlets for 19 years, with the last seven years as CEO. Imelda has successfully overseen the organisation through considerable change, most recently to operate throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

He says: “Kate and I were sitting on the beach Friday evening when a shoal of mackerel chased whitebait onto the pebbles. Of course we helped ourselves to these stranded fish!”

Juliet Smith, Chair of Trustees, comments: “Imelda has been a force of nature as an inspiring leader and ambassador, admired and respected, not only in the local community of Brighton and Hove, but also throughout the hospice movement nationally. We have been privileged to have her as our CEO.” Imelda says: “It will be difficult to leave, but having positioned Martlets as an organisation providing the very best care and support to those with a life-limiting condition, this is very much the right time for someone else to now lead Martlets to the next exciting chapter.”

Imelda will continue in her role as Chief Executive until mid-March and it is very much ‘business as usual’ until then. Recruitment for a new CEO will commence shortly.

63 This month’s healthy living advice is from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

What ever happened to meat and two veg? What’s wrong with the humble carrot or tomato? No match for almonds, goji berries, kale, coconut oil, aloe vera, kale, quinoa, heralded as superfoods. Or are they?

For example, kale made it to the superfood hall of fame through an incredibly successful PR campaign devised to shift a glut of kale. Now, that’s not to say that kale does not contain important micronutrients like vitamins A, C, K, iron, calcium and all-important fibre. However, most green leafy vegetables will give you this. Some superfoods might be nutrient-dense but most don’t typically confer additional health benefits. They tend to be pricier, too!

GENERAL

Well, for the record, superfood is not a scientific term used by any registered nutritionist. It’s simply a marketing strategy to sell these products, books about them and create headlines.

Overly focusing on one food source will not ensure a varied and balanced diet. A rainbow-coloured array is important; different colours are associated with distinct nutritional properties. Unless your doctor or dietitian has prescribed you supplements, it’s foods over supplements every time. There are lots of benefits to getting your vitamins and minerals from real foods such as the fibres and water that they’re packed in.

convinced that that thinking is playing out as we’ve only been averaging around 3 out of the 5 veg over the last several years. The recently-published national food strategy reported on the low levels of fruit and veg intake and the poor quality of our diets which are increasingly made up of ultra-processed foods – a situation so bad that a recommendation was made to start substituting meat with some veg in ready meals to remedy this! We have such a burden of diet-related noncommunicable disease but if we, as a nation, could only eat more fruit and veg, this would greatly be reduced. Hardly a miracle cure!

Conversely the nation is still failing to meet their 5-a-day recommendation – which is only set as 5-a-day because public health professionals think the British people would feel overwhelmed and discouraged at the very thought of seven or ten servings of veg a day as is recommended in other countries. I’m not

But alas, we are only enticed to eat healthily by marketed forms of foods and this situation leads to non-meals and extremes – ‘superfoods’, smoothies, snack bars, ready-meals. Or is it that we don’t have enough time? Whatever the reason, we need to change our food culture. We can’t afford not to.

65 News on a council consultation…

Share your views on travel and transport People across Brighton & Hove are being given the chance to share their views on the future of travel and transport in the city.

Earlier in the summer, the council published a document which will form the basis of the Local Transport Plan 5 (LTP5). They have also now published a similar document, their first Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which sets out strategic plans for improving the walking and cycling environment in the city. The council now want your views on both documents to help shape their plans. LTP5 will set out the council’s outcomes and priorities for transport and travel to 2030. It will support the council’s move towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030, along with other plans and strategies. The council wants to reduce the need for people to travel and change how they travel.

GENERAL

A public consultation has been launched on two documents which set out a vision for how we move around Brighton & Hove actively, safely and sustainably, and make it more accessible for everyone.

Ideas in the plan include: •

A network of mobility hubs to provide seamless interchange between different forms of travel.

A Liveable City Centre to create an attractive central area by placing restrictions on vehicle access, with exemptions for disabled people and others, such as emergency services, local residents, local businesses, taxis and buses.

Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, where motor traffic is greatly reduced in a group of residential streets to create more liveable places. Traffic is reduced by installing “filters”, such as bollards and planters. An expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone.

The six priority areas of the plan are: •

Create an inclusive and integrated transport system

Develop streets and places that encourage and enable active travel

Increase public transport use

Reduce car use

Promote and facilitate the use of low and zero emission vehicles

Promote and use technology to reduce and manage travel.

You can find the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ parking/ltp5-and-lcwip and the closing date for comments is Monday 15 November.

67 News from the council…

Setting out the future for School Streets Members of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 21 September, approved a report on delivering School Streets to all eligible infant, junior and primary schools, with the first six to be implemented in the next year.

GENERAL

The approach to School Streets, as set out in the report, has been informed by the closures that were introduced in September 2020 to support the safe reopening of schools as part of the council’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The report recommended the delivery of School Streets at six schools per year. The priority schools for a closure in 21/22 will be: •

69 Meet an artist who would like to help us all to draw…

Local artist…Louise Prentice Illustrator and art teacher Louise Prentice lives in Hove and has a studio on Brighton seafront. She has recently launched Drompts, a drawing prompt sketchbook for would-be artists and doodlers. Tell us more about your sketchbook…

What sort of illustrations do you do yourself? Naturally curious, I like to experiment, work in various media, and use music for inspiration. Narratives play a big part in my creative process, and I love translating this into new concepts. My illustrations are whimsical, textured and responsive to my love of the world and the human need to play. My M.A. was in children’s illustration, so this genre flies close to my heart. Who are your favourite illustrators? This is difficult because I favour many artists depending on my mood or season. But my love for Shaun Tan and Dave McKean hasn’t wavered. Their work encapsulates much that I admire, but I love the colour, line use, and dreamlike qualities.

GENERAL

I’d become critical of my work; even my inner critic scolded the doodles in sketchbook. Fed up with the harshness of my internal dialogue, I came up with my drawing prompt sketchbook to have fun and allow myself to be silly and enjoy the process again. I’d like more people to feel this way, to enjoy drawing and spend time engrossed in creating for themselves without criticism. The intention is to encourage people to destress, find peace in a no-pressure way. Moving beyond being self-critical and self-limiting. Either way, to be themselves and have fun within the drawing prompts. My sketchbook is there to help them get going. You also create other forms of artwork… I can put a creative spin on most things in life; I’m a creative doodah, so to speak. My current pursuit is the Drompts book series (Halloween and Christmas editions) and I’m almost finished writing a children’s novel. Creating art is an inherent part of my soul, and I love to see and help nurture this in other people. What interests do you have besides art? Forests and hiking, for the energy and expanse in my mind they give me, and I love mudlarking on the Thames foreshore. My permit allows me to dig around and find pieces of history and what has come before us. Searching for lost artefacts makes my heart happy. Drompts is available via louiseprentice.co.uk or Amazon.

71 This article is by Hove resident Tamsin Bishton…

Three positive things to do with your climate anxiety Feeling stressed about climate change? Here are three things you can do to make a difference.

While politicians and big business get stuck in with the big picture challenge at Cop26 in Glasgow this month, as an individual it can feel like there’s no way to make a difference. But there are things we can do. Here are three tangible, positive ideas on how you can “think global, act local” on climate change in Hove. 1.

Ask the council about the local plan

The council published a programme in spring with the ambitious target of being a carbon neutral city by 2030. You can help keep councillors’ attention on the detail of that plan by asking a question at one of the many committee meetings held through the year. 15 minutes are reserved for questions at every meeting. Any resident can ask a question. How to ask a question •

Start on the council website here: https:// www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/council-and-democracy-draft/your-council/go-full-councilor-committee-meeting

Find the most relevant committee for your question - if in doubt, ask it at the main council meeting.

Send your question by email to the relevant Democratic Services officer for the committee (information will be on the agenda papers on the website) and cc: democratic.services@ brighton-hove.gov.uk

You don’t have to ask the question yourself in the meeting - you can nominate someone else to do this.

2. Get involved with improving transport in the city The council is consulting on the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan. See the council website for more info and then respond to the survey: https:// consultations.brighton-hove.gov. uk/parking/ltp5-and-lcwip/ Deadline: 15 November 3. Help get more bike hangars where they’re most needed The council will be putting 100 secure bike storage hangars across the city focusing on places with the highest interest and need. There’s a survey to complete. Take part if you’d like to see a hangar in your street: https:// consultations.brighton-hove.gov. uk/parking/cycle-hangar-survey/ Deadline: 14 November. Get involved. As Greta Thunberg says, no one is too small to make a difference, and the time for “blah blah blah!” is definitely over.

GENERAL

Facing climate anxiety is a real challenge. A recent survey of school children in Brighton and Hove by the Council showed that 55% of them are worrying about this issue. No surprise - there is a lot to feel anxious about. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stuck.

73 News from the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust…

Archaeology Gallery wins award A new gallery in the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery has won a national award for its innovative way of exploring archaeology. The Elaine Evans Archaeology Gallery won the Society for Museum Archaeology Annual Awards for Excellence 2020, winning the category for best exhibition for the way it illustrates the early history of Sussex.

The cutting-edge gallery focuses on seven people, five who were early residents of Brighton & Hove, who lived from the Ice Age to the Saxons. 3D reconstructions using scientific research from their remains have been recreated to show what they may have looked like. The science behind the facial reconstructions provides an instant understanding of how our ancestors looked over a 500,000-year period. DNA analysis has helped us understand skin, eye and hair colouring. It shows that different people from a variety of backgrounds and geographical origins have settled in Sussex through history. As the newest archaeology gallery in the UK, the gallery has been designed to appeal to visitors of all ages, and local schools now have access to inspiring displays of the Stone Age and the Romans to chime with the National Curriculum. Richard Le Saux, Senior Keeper Collections, said: “I’m very proud of the gallery and I’m so pleased our hard work has

GENERAL

The gallery opened in 2019 with funding from Hove resident and museum patron Elaine Evans. It is the first in Britain to provide visitors with an all-round experience of the period, by reconstructing the faces of early residents and recreating the atmosphere of the past using sound, film and images. Elaine Evans with schoolchildren at the opening of the gallery

been recognised by the Society of Museum Archaeology. The gallery closed soon after opening because of Covid so we know many people will not have had a chance to see it yet. We hope now that visitors can return, they will find it fascinating.” The museum will also feature some of the most important historical finds from the Sussex area including the internationally important Amber Cup, one of the largest prehistoric amber objects found in the world, the beautiful Romano-British bronze Woodingdean Stag, designated as an item of national significance by the Government, and the sarsen stone found in Mile Oak, believed to be part of a Bronze Age henge which would have been placed to track the movements of the sun and the moon. 74 An appeal from YMCA Downslink...

Help a young person facing homelessness You can change the life of a local young person facing homelessness for just 40p a day! Can you imagine what it would have been like to navigate your teenage years without a supportive family? Or, worse, that your home wasn’t a safe place to be? There are many reasons that young people become homeless, but it is never their choice. That’s the message from YMCA DownsLink Group, the south coast’s biggest youth charity, who are launching a new, hard-hitting campaign to drive awareness of youth homelessness. The statistics around youth homelessness speak for themselves: •

It is estimated that 20% of homeless people are aged 16 to 24.

Approximately 40% of 16-25 year olds in the UK have sofa-surfed at some point due to having nowhere to live.

61% of LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 who became homeless had first felt frightened or threatened by family.

Jack has an all too familiar story. His relationship with his family broke down after he came out as gay. He found himself homeless when he ran out of places to stay. He moved into YMCA DownsLink Group’s 24-hour supported accommodation, and, after two years is able to see a future.

Jack: “When I told my family I was gay it was probably the worst day of my life. My dad just couldn’t look at me and my mum wouldn’t stop crying. It made me feel terrible about myself – I got so depressed and low……..I was in a really bad place mentally – I think I just hated myself back then. Moving into the YMCA was the best thing to happen to me. The support workers were amazing and they just seemed to ‘get me’ and know what I needed. They encouraged me to join a local LBGTQ group and that was the start of me accepting myself for who I am. I feel so different now, I’ve mostly stopped self-harming and if I’m feeling low I know I’ve got people to talk to. I’m starting an apprenticeship soon and I feel so much more positive about the future.” By becoming a Room Sponsor, not only are you giving a vulnerable young person a home, you are giving them a second chance. Being young and homeless can create a cycle of poverty, ill-health, and exclusion that can be impossible to break. Your support will change lives. To find out more or to sign up visit https://www.ymcadlg.org/get-involved/donate/ room-sponsor/

Celebrate Christmas at Brighton Dome There really is something for everyone at Brighton Dome this December with a full festive season of live events. From South American circus to enchanting ballet, classic carols to new arrangements of favourite songs and a rebellion against Christmas convention in an online musical film.

Returning to Brighton with their sell-out Christmas show, Ballet Theatre UK’s The Snow Queen is an enchanting re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s festive fairytale - the story that inspired Disney’s Frozen. A perfect outing for the whole family, this talented young company of international dancers will perform the magic of ballet to a glorious score. To celebrate the end of the year in style, Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala promises an afternoon of classical music featuring favourites from the Strauss family and the wonderful world of Viennese operetta. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a rousing sing along and this year will be a special return for local choirs to the stage. Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus bring an evening of fun and frivolity featuring favourite festive tunes and sparkling new arrangements. The Choir with No Name join their London and Brighton choirs for a night of Christmas classics, with donations and profits from the event supporting the charity’s work with the homeless, in partnership

GENERAL

From 17 to 27 December, Circolombia’s circus-concert Acéléré will transport audiences to the bustling streets of Bogotá for an on-stage party that everyone is invited to. Featuring extraordinary acrobatic feats of breath-taking ability fused with live singing and dance, the performance is ideal for families, a friends’ night-out or an alternative Christmas staff celebration. The Snow Queen

with Brighton Housing Trust. And Brighton Festival Chorus host their joyful celebration of classical Christmas music, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Brighton Festival Youth Choir. Premiering online on Thursday 16 December, An_Other Christmas: Recorded Delivery is a rebellion against tradition for those less enamoured with the festive season. This free alternative Christmas film is a celebration of otherness, the others and the other in everyone, featuring music from artists Douglas Dare, Camille O’Sullivan, Eska and Duke Garwood. Tickets for all Christmas events will be available from Brighton Dome’s website and ticket office. Brighton Dome, Church Street, Brighton BN1 1UE brightondome.org Ticket Office: 01273 709709 Open for in-person bookings Monday-Saturday 10.00 am-5.00 pm
