POETS CORNER

It has been quite a journey with many twists and turns, with the most dramatic happening in 2020 with the pandemic and a total restructuring of the business and the creation of The Hovarian and its sister publication The Brightonian. Six months in, these new magazines have quickly taken root in their respective communities with lots of great feedback from residents and businesses alike. Please keep sending in your suggestions.

HOVE PARK

This November marks our sixteenth year producing local magazines in Brighton and Hove. It all started with the first edition of The Fiveways Directory back in November 2004.

Meet the owner of Treacle & Ginger café…

West Hove person…Lisa Green Lisa Green lives in Aymer Road and owns Treacle & Ginger café at 164 Church Road. Following the lockdown, it reopened in September as an artisan café and retail space. What have you done to adapt the café to help you survive? We recognised that we must adapt to the new circumstances. We were too small to open successfully as a café and at Aymer Arts we were unable to open as part of the Artists Open Houses. We decided to combine the two. We collaborate with local artists and makers and small independent businesses to offer a fantastic range of gifts and homeware, alongside take-away coffee, tea and cake. There is also space to sit in our lovely courtyard and admire the sculpture and plants for sale there.

Doors and Conservatories

What sort of food do you offer? We concentrate on savoury pastries and gorgeous sweet treats; our cakes are scrumptious! We always have gluten-free and vegan options too. We try to source as locally as possible and we use Pharmacie coffee and MD Tea, both local to Brighton. What is your speciality? It’s got to be our Salt Caramel tart with chocolate ganache, or the wonderful chocolate and Guinness cake! Tell us about the artwork that you stock… We stock work by a wonderful range of local artists who make everything from ceramics, paintings, prints, greeting cards, garden sculpture, 3D treasure boxes, textiles, chairs, upcycled found objets d’art, and jewellery. We also work with small independent suppliers too and have a range of soy wax candles, skincare and soaps that are cruelty free and vegan.

West Hove news…

Wish Park Mural On 2nd October, Hove MP Peter Kyle joined local residents, artists and sponsors in Wish Park to cut a ribbon to celebrate the completion of the new mural on the electricity substation and the planting of the adjacent land. The project was funded by the local community and made possible by the commitment of a large number of residents who gave up their time. It was painted by artists from Red Herring Studios, based in Portslade, who gave over 120 hours of their free time. 42 plants have been planted in the land adjacent to the mural and a planter beneath the mural has been filled with grasses and herbs. There is also a bug hotel, a bird box and a cherry tree. Residents plan to paint the other wall of the substation in the spring and add a bench.

Wish Park Phone Mast Plan Gardening Group Rejected Residents around Wish Park have formed a new Gardening Group. Sixteen people turned out for the first session in September. They meet on the first Saturday of each month at 9.30am at the Saxon Road pavilion and finish around 11am. If you have gloves and garden tools, please bring them with you. They do have a small selection of both. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, volunteers will be working in socially-distanced groups of up to six people.

A planning application to install an 18-metre 5G phone mast in Boundary Road, outside Colosseo restaurant, was refused by the council, following 110 objections from neighbours and ward councillors. The council said that the mast and associated cabinets, due to their positioning, height and bulk, would “appear as overly prominent, dominant and incongruous features in the streetscene, with a resultant significant detrimental impact upon the character and appearance of the area”.

News from the churchwardens at St Leonard’s Church…

St Leonard’s Aldrington We have been back in church for our Sunday services at 9.30am for nearly two months now and it has been lovely to welcome back most of our usual congregation, a number of newcomers and many of our regular team of locum priests.

The church remains open for private prayer and reflection on Thursday afternoons from 2-3pm and some of you may prefer this quieter time. 1st November 9.30-10.30am All Saints and All Souls’ Day Come and join us at church to celebrate the saints and martyrs of our church and also to remember our loved ones in this special service. 2nd November is All Souls’ Day when we remember those who have died. At this time when many families have tragically been bereaved, we will be holding a special Communion service on Sunday 1st. We will be remembering our departed loved ones in gratitude and thanksgiving and there will be the chance to light candles during the service. If you would like to put any names on the list of the departed, either the recently

departed or any others you wish to remember, please let us know. 8th November 9.30-10.30am Our Remembrance Service (non-Eucharistic) will be held at 9.30am. We will be observing the two minutes silence, though a little early, as Archdeacon Martin has to leave to attend the Remembrance Service at the War Memorial in Brighton. If you would like to attend either of these services you will need to book a place (no charge) so that we know we have not exceeded the safe number of seats. If you are on our mailing lists please reply to the email invitation you will be sent. Or you can book a place by contacting us on: stleonardsaldrington@outlook.com or by leaving a message on: 07907 806370. Everyone is most welcome to come to any of our services. All the necessary safety precautions are in place.

What’s happening at the Secret Garden During our recent uncertain times, the Secret Garden behind St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road has provided a wonderful, peaceful sanctuary to many, many people: those with no gardens of their own, young families, dog walkers and nature lovers from all walks of life. The group of volunteer gardeners have managed to continue the good work in the garden and have seen a colourful display of flowers during the summer, the harvesting of many vegetables this autumn and a bumper production of honey from the bee hives. We have received generous funding and donations from various organisations and well-wishers in the past year and much work is planned for the year ahead: we are currently looking to build a ‘living’ gazebo to offer both a visual attraction to the garden and shelter to workers during sudden downpours; ideas are in place for a wishing well so that visitors can express their appreciation of the continued voluntary work; we also have plans to replace the pond liner which has perished during

the very hot weather, not an easy task!! Much fun is had and a great community spirit is enjoyed during our sessions so do consider coming along to join us. New volunteers are always welcome and (distanced) sessions continue on Saturday mornings from 11am. Secretgardengroup@outlook.com

News of this year’s West Hove Arts Trail…

Artists Open Houses in Hove November 21st to December 13th This year’s Artists Open Houses is almost here! The postponement (no prizes for guessing why) from May to an early Christmas date of November was a disappointment for the local artists of Hove but there has been a silver lining... As with much of the arts sector, the lifeblood events have simply not been possible, e.g. exhibitions and art fairs. So, whilst only a small number of open houses are physically open, many artists of your local West Hove Arts Trail are embracing online exhibitions via the aoh.org.uk website. From here you’ll be able to click through to the artists’ websites and Etsy stores to view more and buy online.

The vibrant West Hove arts scene includes: ceramics, paintings, prints, photography, mixed media and crafted gifts. Much of the art world has been forced to quickly move online, and it’s now easier than ever to enjoy and purchase art from the comfort of your favourite armchair with a cuppa and a biscuit or two. Art is often an investment to be enjoyed day after day and, with spending far more time at home, now could be the time to treat yourself or do a spot of online window shopping ahead of Christmas.

Don’t forget a small number of West Hove open houses will be open alongside the online only ‘venues’. Details of both can be found at:

15 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

As we head into autumn your Westbourne councillors have been working hard on the issues that arose over summer and particularly the changes that happened over lockdown.

POETS CORNER

Westbourne Councillor News

Chris with PCSO Aidan Goodwin, Tracy Stuart and Norman the dog

For example, residents reported a surge in anti-social behaviour, car crime, drug dealing and littering. We worked carefully with the council and the police on how we can keep our lovely neighbourhood friendly and thanks to some amazing community champions and our PCSOs we’ve made great progress. There are now new Neighbourhood Watch schemes around the area and many streets have adopted WhatsApp groups to keep in touch and flag up problems. It’s been a show of amazing community spirit. As part of this we did a walk-around with Westbourne’s PCSOs to chat over the ‘hot spots’ and meet local residents. Special thanks goes to Tracy Stuart who has worked incredibly hard to set up a Poets Corner Neighbourhood Watch, and shows what local people can achieve with some help and support from our

community. We really hope you now see a difference in local nuisance issues, and remember the best way to get a problem resolved is to ensure the police are aware of it by filling out the online form: https:// www.sussex.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/ how-to-report-a-crime/ Carmen has been working hard on a post-Covid economic recovery for the city and Chris has been liaising with MP Peter Kyle on how to support the small, local businesses in our area. Around Portland Road and beyond we have a fantastic network of local shops and we are determined to help support and protect them through this difficult time. If you can shop local for your Christmas presents this year, please do! Chris Henry and Carmen Appich Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

16 News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…

Déjà Vu in Stoneham Park All this talk of a second coronavirus wave and with it a new lockdown, or a temporary circuit break, has given us all a real sense of déjà vu. Seven months ago, I wrote our last article for the Poets Pages magazine. The first covid wave was crashing over us then, and it seems like it is happening all over again. It is strange to look back to March and see that I reported the Brighton Marathon being postponed to September (it was cancelled in the end) and professional football matches being halted for three weeks (the Premier League actually took 14 weeks off). With Wimbledon being called off completely and the Olympic Games in Tokyo being put back a year, the effect of the pandemic is as deep as it is broad. The Friends ended up cancelling all its activities over the spring and summer. We had hoped to hold a couple of events in the autumn, but our plans for an outdoor cinema have been scuppered by the second wave, if that is what it turns out to be. The council had approved our screening for 3 October. But then the heavens opened, and the rain meant we had to postpone the event. By the next weekend, we learned that the coronavirus was bearing down on us again and approval had been withdrawn. We fully understand the reasons, as staying safe is our top priority. But, don’t worry, as Arnold Schwarzenegger might have said in The Terminator - we’ll be back! The Friends did, however, manage to gather together some volunteers to do some weeding around the little play park in the middle of September. We cleared J.H. over twelve sack-loads of unwanted and unsightly plants. Many thanks indeed to those who turned up to help. Your assistance was greatly appreciated. Finally, we managed to host a meeting of park users and local residents at the beginning of October. It was good to see a couple of new faces and to hear some new ideas for improving the park and concerns that have troubled the park’s neighbours. If you want to find out what happened and when our next meeting will be, then please take a look at our website, www.friendsofstonehampark.uk. Richard Hearnden

There is no record of when the pit was filled up but, as it was near to the present Hove Recycling Centre, it may gradually have been filled up by refuse over a period of some years. Plans for the houses and shops in that part of Old Shoreham Road show that particular attention had to be paid to their foundations, doubtless due to their proximity to the old pit. 22 This year is a significant anniversary for a local Hove Park business, 1990-2020...

Dog’s Life celebrating 30 Years of Canine Care... As a local postman in Hove, Roy Alldred used to see dogs at home alone. So with time to spare he put an advert in the local press for a dog walking service; he was amazed at the response. He realised there was a need for this kind of service for dog owners who could not be home 24 / 7. So he gave up his job as a postman to provide this service. Postmen traditionally have a difficult relationship with dogs. Did you? Yes, once a Yorkie bit my little finger when I put my hand through the letter box! I had stitches!! That'll teach me to not invade its territory! Have you always been a dog lover? Yes, I was brought up with dogs throughout my childhood...they have always been loyal and great company as well as very protective. You started with dog walking. What services do you offer now? I am licensed for Boarding having part of my house specially adapted to comply with the local authorities’ requirements, with a large secure garden and CCTV cameras. I do still operate dog walking where I collect the dogs locally, then return them home after long romps in the South Downs countryside. I am insured and have a first aid certificate for dogs. In 30 years, what is your favourite memory?

To celebrate with Roy please see the website and video... We offer a special boarding price for the festive season between December 21st & January 4th. We do dog walking for £9 for a maximum of two hours depending on the age, size and agility of the dog Call or text to 07713091705 to discuss. email: earl.dogslife@gmail.com www.dogwalkingbrighton.co.uk

I have many! Among my most treasured are the friends I have made during the years. One of my clients still employs me to take their dogs, 28 years later (different dogs, of course). They go away a lot so I look after their 2 Springer Spaniels. Also I have seen children grow up and who now have children of their own who employ me to care for their dogs… a real family affair! 25 Meet a volunteer host for Sussex Nightstop…

Hove Park person…Rita Garner Rita lives near Hove Park and is a volunteer for local charity Sussex Nightstop. Sussex Nightstop co-ordinate volunteer hosts who provide a safe place to stay for people who are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Why did you join Sussex Nightstop? HOVE PARK

I was chatting to friends and said, ‘If only there was a way, I could offer my spare room to someone who would otherwise be homeless.’ ‘Nightstop,’ they replied. So, I contacted them and signed up to their training sessions with other new hosts. These gave me real insight and confidence to be a host. What kind of people come to stay with you? The people who have come to stay have been between 16 and 25 with all kinds of interests. Some want to chat and others just want to be alone and everything in between. It seems obvious but I’ll say it, you can’t generalise. There isn’t a ‘type’ of person who uses Nightstop.

What do you enjoy about being a host?

Homelessness is so devastating for people and through Nightstop I feel I am doing a small thing to support people. There have been some challenges but I I like being with people and meeting have always felt safe and supported and there is always the 24/7 on-call support to people who are different to me, learning from them and their life experiences. check-in with should anything come up, whether urgent or if the person is running The people who stay with me don’t even realise what they are giving me but it is so a bit late. For a few people I have really enriching and also, I am doing something worried about their vulnerability and the small but important for my fellow humans. choices and decisions they make about their relationships but through my host For more information on volunteering, visit: training I know it is not for me to advise www.sussexnightstop.org.uk/contact-us/ them. The next morning you always get or call 07788 318 905. a call from the co-ordinator and I download everything that might be important including how it has affected me if something is distressing. This has meant I don’t hold responsibility for something but can stay in role as the host offering a safe, welcoming place to sleep and eat. Have there been any challenges?

27 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Citizens, assemble! It’s been a privilege to serve on the Council’s 2030 Carbon Neutral cross-party working group for a little over a year now. This is not a coincidence of course. In more than one city, local authorities went on the hunt for innovative solutions to seek ideas from their residents about the path for a different future.

We need the Section 106 money to deliver affordable housing for the city, we were also told. Those who told us that of course had forgotten that delivering affordable housing was not why s106 was set up in the first place. It was set up to deliver infrastructure, and that’s something for another day perhaps. Going back to the working group, an important deliverable from this group is, and will be, the Brighton and Hove Citizens’ Assembly for climate. As a forum for sharing ideas, citizens’ climate assemblies have gained traction in cities like Oxford. The idea behind the assembly in our city is that it brings together a small number of residents, randomly selected to reflect local demographics, alongside a panel of advisors to help shape how the city could address environmental challenges and prioritise actions to take forward. Not everyone of course agrees that these assemblies are in themselves effective. A recent report by Nesta, published in March 2020, suggested that involving citizens through dry and traditional techniques

HOVE PARK

For us in Hove Park, we experienced recently this difference in the shape of planning decisions blighting our skylines with tower blocks and houses permitted on our back gardens. Not much of a public debate or consultation. We needed the numbers, we were told. This will give us affordable houses, we were told.

such as surveys, town hall meetings, and citizens’ assemblies could be seen as tokenistic rather than leading to real change. That’s our challenge then. Having set up the assembly, how do we ensure it champions real change? The assembly has kicked off using a virtual format and, from 700 residents who responded to the wider invitation to join the assembly, 50 members were chosen and will have met twice by the time you read this article. The meetings are held virtually on Zoom with 22 Ipsos MORI staff facilitating. It is looking at transport in the city, a challenge for our residents in Hove Park at the best of times. Let’s look out for good outcomes but also join the conversation online at https://www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/climate-change/brighton-hove-climate-assembly Cllr Prof Samer Bagaeen Samer.Bagaeen@brighton-hove.gov.uk

31 News from the council…

EU Settlement Scheme Latest government figures show that 20,280 European Union citizens living in Brighton & Hove have now applied to stay in the UK after the Brexit transition period ends on 31 December.

As a consequence of the 2016 referendum,

when 52% of the British population voted to leave the EU, all EU citizens, as well as those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, need to apply to the EU settlement scheme if they want to protect their right to continue living, working and accessing healthcare in the UK from next year.

If you know of someone who is eligible who hasn’t yet applied, please encourage them to do so at: www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families. The application process is free.

GENERAL

Cllr Marianna Ebel, chair of the council’s Brexit Working Group, said: “In Brighton & Hove our message is clear, we want our EU residents to stay and we will support them in continuing to make the city their home.”

Cllr Marianna Ebel

Bin Consultation The council has launched a public consultation on what should be done about the hundreds of business waste bins that line our streets and pavements. At present traders can leave their bins outside their premises all day. But with so many trade bins being placed on our pavements the council is receiving mounting complaints about them blocking pavements and roads, attracting fly-tipping and vermin, and causing problems with social distancing. It’s a very tricky issue, so the council wants to find a way forward that works for everyone. The consultation sets out the issue and then gives a number of options on what can be done to keep the trade street bins to a minimum. The main idea

is to introduce ‘Time-banded Collections’ (or T-Zones) in the city centre and areas where there is high footfall, narrow pavements and heavy traffic. The city centre has been divided into 13 of these T-Zones. T-Zones would mean in certain areas of the city, businesses would only be allowed to have their bins and/or bags of waste on the highway between 6am and 9am for collection purposes. The consultation ends on Monday 24 November. You can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/rubbishrecycling-and-streets/commercial-bins/

33 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

“ Burn him in a tub of tar. Burn him like a blazing star”(traditional rhyme) Two hundred years ago, although Catholicism had been legal in the UK since 1791, Catholics did not enjoy full civil rights. The 1820s saw the question of Catholic emancipation raging across the land: George IV, many politicians, and literary figures (including Coleridge and Wordsworth) professed fiercely anti-Catholic views whilst “No Popery” mobs rioted against Catholic emancipation legislation.

Henry Solly recounted his schoolboy memories of this intense political climate from his time at Dr Morrell’s Academy in Hove (south-east of Hove Street, in the area of St Aubyn’s today). Dr Morrell - a liberal-minded, non-conformist minister - heartily supported Catholic emancipation and so would not let the boys hold their bonfire on Guy Fawkes’ Day itself nor allow any ceremonial or effigy. Solly recalls a blissful day spent on the Downs; he imagined himself a cavalry officer in the recently ended Napoleonic Wars as he scampered around under the bright sunshine foraging for gorse for the bonfire. However, their “grand jubilation” around the traditional tar-barrel bonfire was curtailed when “a horde of roughs, men as well as boys, from the surrounding districts, before long broke in upon us with irresistible fury, flung the burning brands about, rolled the blazing tar-barrel over the grass” and drove boys and masters pell-mell to the refuge of the school.

GENERAL

Meanwhile, traditional 5th November revelries in Brighthelmston were marked by mischief, mayhem and madness, occasionally spilling over into wanton violence - flaming tar-barrels careering down North Street; High Constable’s house attacked; firing of pistols mingled with the explosion of rockets and yells of the mob; reading of the Riot Act; troops advancing along the Steine, bayonets fixed. “Terrors of Emancipation”, a satirical cartoon by Charles Williams from 1829

Henry Solly became one of the most remarkable social innovators of his age, an activist in almost every radical cause to benefit the working class (Chartism, abolition of slavery, universal suffrage, free education, co-operative movement, teetotalism). 35 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Hovarian Hedgehogs Ever wondered what that weird snorting, scuffling noise is coming from your garden once darkness falls? Foxes playing? Possibly. Rats? Too guttural for them. Tipsy people on the way back from Church Road? Maybe…

The chat-up lines are boorish, consisting of inarticulate snorts and puffs combined with an apparently irresistible circling of the female. Unimaginably, it can take some time for him to pique her interest. And if this pressure of rejection isn’t enough, the noise often attracts rival males that can make a poor bachelor’s attempts even more frantic and delay the proceedings. But don’t worry, after all that effort the male Hog isn’t rewarded with a needle attack to the privates and a quick trip to A & E. Nature knows, and the female flattens her spines to accommodate the grateful male. Needless to say after all that, copulation is a fleeting affair. Now, let me tell you why Hedgehogs are good for your garden and why we should be doing our best to conserve them in Hove. They are generalist invertebrate predators with sharp teeth that can quickly dismantle both soft- and hard-bodied creatures. These include some of Hove’s most notorious garden pests, slugs, but will also take caterpillars and beetles, and they need them because at this time of year they have to put on a self-isolation

GENERAL

If these noises are heard during May and June, then it may just be the intimate courtship of one of the UK’s most special mammals, the Hedgehog. And to say the whole operation is a delicate one is an understatement. As with most quadrupedal mammals, mating is performed facing the same way, which a prickly issue for a male Hog.

panic-shop of weight. Hedgehogs need somewhere undisturbed and of stable temperature to hibernate over winter where they can lose between 10-20% of their bodyweight. So what can you do to attract them? First, keep a part of your garden messy where there’s plenty of places for slugs, worms and other invertebrates to hide away; this will be the Hogs’ larder. Second, a specially bought Hedgehog home or pile of dead-wood or rubble pile (with suitable hedgehog-sized gaps) will give them somewhere to shelter. And finally, find a way to create access into your garden by creating a little Hedgehog hole (about 4x4 inches). The typical Hove brick walls don’t make this easy, but if you have a wooden gate this would be perfect. And then you can find out whether you already have them by using a wildlife camera, or a Hedgehog tunnel to see their footprints (check out the excellent Hedgehog Street website for details). glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

37 A local charity supporting the families of prisoners…

Sussex Prisoners’ Families De wasn’t expecting her son to go to jail. It was his first offence and she had been assured by his legal team that his previous good record would go in his favour. So when he was given a 5 year sentence, her world caved in.

A Google search put De in contact with Sussex Prisoners’ Families – an organisation set up in 2013 to support the 5,000 families a year in Sussex who have someone sent to prison. We support families practically and emotionally, providing one to one advice, support groups and outings for children and families feeling the strain. People come to us with different needs. Some are wearily familiar with the criminal justice system. Others are brand new – bewildered by the terrifying and baffling new world they have been thrown into. Most are consumed with crippling anxiety about their loved ones behind bars. Problems range from the basics such as which prison they have gone to, to worries about the prisoners’ health to advice about visiting. Many callers to our advice line are parents whose sons have mental health or learning difficulties, terrified about their chances of coping in what can be an unforgiving system.

Charity director Sam Hart (centre) with Hove MP Peter Kyle and court volunteers at HMP Lewes visitors’ centre

how to broach the issue of imprisonment, leaving children with an unclear or false idea of where their parent has gone. “I just googled prisons and found all these horrible pictures of brutality and bars,” recalls one young person whose dad was sent to prison. “I was terrified.” Small wonder that prisoners’ children are 2-3 times more likely to develop mental health problems than their peers. As Christmas approaches and the loss of a loved-one becomes harder to bear, our hard-working, compassionate team will be on hand to support families through the struggle.

Covid-19 has exacerbated the problem. To reduce the chances of the infection spreading within the system, prison visits Sam Hart (Director) were stopped for several months. Although they have now resumed, they are www.sussexprisonersfamilies.org.uk at reduced capacity and many families are Facebook.com/sussexprisonersfamilies choosing instead to move to video visits. 01273 499843 Children are suffering too. The loss of their mum or dad combined with stigma which can result in bullying at school is hard for children to take. This is combined with the fact that parents sometimes struggle with Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

39 This month’s healthy living advice is from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

Strong hearts in tough times

Replace white bread and pasta with wholegrain foods Many nutrition fads focus on looks but less on what’s going on inside. A sobering fact is that heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK and globally, accounting for a huge proportion of disability-adjusted life years. 7.4 million people live with cardiovascular diseases which is twice as many as with cancer or Alzheimer’s and costs the NHS £19 billion*. The top risk factor for cardiovascular disease is diet and related to other risk factors such as central obesity, that’s belly fat to you and me*. You can have a ‘healthy’ BMI but be carrying unhealthy fat around your organs. Our hearts work even harder in illness, so how can we make them fighting fit? Drastic short-term action is rarely proven to work. This is contrary to Michael Mosley’s rapid weight loss claims on TV this summer; but his five lucky volunteers did have the support and guidance of top experts to monitor this extreme and potentially dangerous low-calorie diet. Are these guys still on the wagon and have friends? I wonder. Two factors strongly influence the success of behaviour change: (1) intrinsic motivation; we have to want to do it for our own meaningful reasons; and (2) a conducive

environment; do we live in a place where the healthy option is the easiest one? Is our community supportive? Who holds us accountable? Family? Friends? If the answer is ‘no’, you could uproot yourself from your social circles or environment. The evidence certainly suggests that there are healthier places to live. The more realistic and desirable approach is taking small steps, a few at a time, and swapping healthier habits into your current routine without a total lifestyle makeover. Here’s what these swaps could look like (spoiler alert: get ready for familiar-sounding, unsexy, life-saving advice!): replace white varieties with wholegrain foods; substitute bad fats (e.g. butter, coconut oil) with good fats (e.g. olive oil, nut butters); up your veg intake, e.g. add a portion into your pasta; eat less red meat, e.g. replace half the beef in a stew with beans; and reduce salts and sugars, e.g. save soft drinks for weekends. For tons more ideas try www.heart.org.uk or www.nhs.uk/ live-well/eat-well/healthy-food-swaps/ *Sources: British Heart Foundation, 2020; ourworlddata.org; The Lancet, 2015.

Pavement Weeds... A petition on weed management signed by 200 people was brought to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 29th September, calling for the council to effectively manage weeds.

Cllr Lee Wares, Group Spokesperson for the Conservatives on the committee, also tabled a question on what was being done to clear the weeds and whether sufficient resource and funding would be made available to repair and replace pavements damaged by weeds. The committee chair, Green Party councillor Amy Heley, said in her response that a plan had been developed in 2019 to end the use of pesticides in the city’s parks, open spaces, pavements and highways. This means that manual techniques are now used for the removal of weeds. She said: “When adopting this approach, Cityclean were open that they would not be able to remove the weeds to the same extent as before and therefore there would be more weeds. However, this also brings some benefits of encouraging insects and increased biodiversity. Indeed, many residents have asked us to not remove weeds when they have seen the insects flourish.”

SPARKS 1st

Cllr Heley said that most of the worst affected areas in the city had been cleared. However, the weeding schedule had been quite badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and the weeding season would end in October when the focus would change to leaves and the positive and negative impacts of manual weed removal would be reviewed. Cllr Heley continued: “We will take this time to trial new brushes for the mechanical sweepers and review funding equipment and resources for the following year. A report will be brought to committee in the new year. Our street cleansing operatives continue to work hard to remove weeds and leaves from the most affected areas of the city.” Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

45 City news…

On 9th October, Cineworld temporarily closed its chain of cinemas until further notice, including its cinema at Brighton Marina.

This is due to a delay in the release of some big commercial films, such as the latest James Bond film “No Time to Die”. At present there is no set date for re-opening. A statement from Cineworld says: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will communicate our future plans to resume operations once film studios are able to bring their pipeline of major movie releases back to the big screen. We can assure you that once a line-up of movie releases is confirmed, we will be ready to re-open our cinemas, as we did in July, with the same safety levels you have already seen while at the same time keeping the great experience that you are used to getting from us.” Picturehouse Cinemas are owned by Cineworld, so those cinemas have also sadly been shut temporarily, including The Duke of York’s in Preston Road, which opened in 1910 and is one of the oldest cinemas in the world, and Duke’s at Komedia in Gardner Street.

Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions and every penny will go towards helping people in the city to alleviate their fuel poverty. People in difficulty will be referred to Brighton Lions and direct applications will not be accepted. Donations can be made at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas should be sent to Brighton Lions Club, c/o 9 Westfield Crescent, Brighton, BN1 8JB. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.

Some Odeon cinemas are to close during the week but will stay open from Friday to Sunday. At the time of writing, Odeon Brighton on West Street was still open all week. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

47 City news‌ The Old Shoreham Road cycle lane

Old Shoreham Road cycle lanes: At a meeting of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 29th September, councillors approved amendments to the Old Shoreham Road temporary cycle lanes (between The Drive and Hangleton Road), which were introduced in May as part of the Covid-19 Urgent Response Transport Action Plan. A report to the committee said there had been a 61% increase in the number of cyclists using the new cycle lanes, compared to the number using the same stretch of road in 2016. However, 64% of respondents to a survey did not support the scheme. A key concern was the issue of queues at the Olive Road right-hand turn. Councillors agreed that amendments be made, including to the right-hand turn into Olive Road and the Carlton Terrace junction. Council officers will continue to monitor the impact of the new cycle lanes and gather evidence for a future decision on keeping or removing them.

significant concerns about congestion caused by reducing the capacity at the Palace Pier roundabout. The section of the cycle lane between the pier and West Street was removed and the report to the ETS committee said that this appeared to have addressed the issues. The council will continue to adjust the scheme as necessary. Measures under consideration for the future include a high quality, segregated cycle lane from Brighton to Shoreham.

49 Congratulations to all those receiving honours from the Queen…

Queen’s Birthday Honours Several Hove residents have been honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, which were delayed this year due to the Covid-19 crisis.

She said: “I’m humbled by this award, which reflects the dedication of a huge number of people rather than any individual endeavour. My hope is that the recognition afforded by the OBE focuses attention on podo, on the structural problems that mean it exists at all, on efforts to make care accessible to all patients, and on protecting the next generation from this entirely avoidable condition.” Alan McCarthy of West Hove receives an MBE for services to the NHS. He is Chair of the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, as well as the Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also a former Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove City Council. Alan said: “It’s been a privilege to work with so many great people throughout my public sector career. It’s really recognition for all they’ve done. I’ve just been fortunate to work with so many brilliant people over so many years.” Sally Beamish receives an OBE for services to music. She is a composer whose works include chamber, vocal, choral and orchestral music, as well as music for theatre, film and television. She also plays the viola. Sally said: “In these bleak times for music and the arts, it means a lot to me that creativity, and the role of the creator in society, have been recognised as important to all of us, and vital to the wellbeing of a healthy society.”

CINECITY returns... Brighton’s film festival CINECITY is back in November for its 18th edition and not surprisingly things are a little different this year. The Innocence

They have joined forces with other leading regional film festivals to present AMPLIFY! – a new online festival which will be available right across the UK. This celebration of cinema, supported by the British Film Institute, will run online from 6th-22nd November, alongside a select number of CINECITY screenings at the Depot, Lewes. The programme is F-Rated with at least 50% of the programme directed by female film-makers. There is also a spotlight on new directors with first features comprising much of the programme. “The Innocence” (La Inocencia), directed by Lucia Alemany of Spain in her debut feature, is about a teenage girl who dreams of leaving her hometown to become a circus artist. Her parents are good people, but not especially in tune with the needs and desires of their young daughter. The transition from innocence to adulthood is portrayed magnificently by lead actress Carmen Arrufat. “I Still Breathe” by London-based film-maker Alfred George Bailey is his response to the death of George Floyd. It’s a short film, combining sharp, eloquent interviews with elements of performance and dance.

There are many debuts from local film-makers; NEW VOICES supported by Screen and Film School Brighton, is a showcase for young film-making talent and CINECITY OPEN is a programme of short films selected from open submissions to the festival. For the full programme and to book, visit www.amplifyfilm.org.uk

Nevill Fireworks call it a day... The Nevill Fireworks company have sadly decided to call it a day and are no longer going to organise their annual displays in Nevill Road. Their statement says: “After more than a decade of spectacular firework displays at the Nevill Playing Fields we have decided not to continue this year, and we don't have any plans to run any more events in the future. We're really proud of the shows we produced despite some challenging conditions, and hope that you have enjoyed yourselves whatever the weather! Thanks for your support over the years.”

53 News from the council…

Organisations within the city have been awarded over £6 million as part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future. The Brighton Centre

The Brighton Centre, Brighton Dome, Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust and Brighton Pride are some of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support. Brighton & Hove is a hotbed of cultural activity and the pandemic has deeply impacted the organisations that make the city what it is. The majority of culture and leisure organisations are relatively small and do not have significant reserves to rely upon. This cash injection will support these organisations in what are some of the toughest times they have had to face. However, some parts of the sector have yet to benefit from a specific package of support and still face many of the same problems they did in May. In the coming weeks, all organisations that are eligible are urged to apply for further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector.

Fly-tippers beware Brighton & Hove City Council are launching a clampdown on fly-tippers by installing CCTV and number plate recognition cameras at some of the city’s worst dumping grounds. Fly-tipping costs the council more than £100,000 a year. The cameras are mobile so can and will be moved around the city as a deterrent to people who wilfully break the law by dumping their unwanted items on the street, at recycling points or on public and private land. Since lockdown, enforcement officers have issued 116 fines for fly-tipping, totalling more than £46,000. Common examples of fly-tipping are: dumping household items like mattresses beside communal bins or recycling points; residents leaving their unwanted items on the pavement or outside their homes in the hope others will take away or reuse them; tipping rubbish or building materials in green spaces. There are many lawful ways to dispose of unwanted items including taking them to one of the city’s two household waste recycling sites or giving them away free on social media platforms. The new cameras follow on from the council setting up a fly-tipping hotline - 01273 295063 – where people can report a fly-tip crime.

55 A new book for local history enthusiasts…

Ghosts of the past

GENERAL

Author Calvin Partridge has produced a new colour 40-page book merging pictures of Brighton today with those taken from exactly the same spot up to 150 years before.

What inspired you to start such an unusual project?

You say it was harder than expected. What were the main difficulties?

My son was studying the Second World War and I thought if we merged local photographs from the 1940s with ones taken from the same spot today it would bring the subject to life. It turned out to be harder than I expected but I was hooked and expanded it to cover a larger period.

Firstly there was finding precisely the same spot the original was taken when many of the buildings have changed, while capturing people in poses that would fit the scene when merged.

What are you aiming to do with the book? In the modern-day photographs, people walk the streets unaware of the ghostly images from the past that have come to life around them. I hope it will encourage people to take an interest in those who have walked the same streets before them and how our city has changed.

Secondly modern lenses distort photographs differently to the Victorian bellows cameras. Finally the Victorian cameras were bulky so photographers would often mount their tripods on a horse and cart. It was then easy to stop in the road to take a picture in the light traffic, but the same was not true for me struggling to take the same picture from 10 feet in the air in the middle of a road at Seven Dials!

School Streets needs you

GENERAL

The council are asking parents, carers and residents in Brighton & Hove if they could help support the safe travel of children into some of the city’s schools.

A number are taking part in the School Streets project, which sees temporary timed closures of roads close to schools’ entrances during drop-off and pick-up times, during term time. The closures are managed by trained volunteers, most of whom are parents or carers of children attending the school. But there’s a need for more so that each school can manage the closures each day. Alberto Zanni volunteers at Brunswick Primary School, one of those taking part in the scheme. He said: “It’s been a great start to the project and the children are really enjoying the extra space. People living on the street have been very supportive too. I think they like having fewer cars using the road for a couple of hours a day. It would be great if we had a few more volunteers though. We want to see this project continue but we need more people to help with the road closures and it really doesn’t take up a lot of your time.”

Volunteer and parent Alberto supporting the closure near Brunswick Primary School The schools currently in need of volunteers include Hove Junior School in Portland Road and the Connaught Annexe of West Hove Infants. Volunteers are needed for approximately 30-60 minutes in the morning and afternoon, depending on the school, and help setting up and removing barriers. Please see the ‘Participating Schools’ section on the School Streets webpage (www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ school-streets-brighton-and-hove) for more information. DBS checks may be required and volunteers are supplied with full training and PPE. If you would be interested in supporting the schools taking part in the project and would like to know more, please email school.streets@brighton-hove.gov. uk giving the name of the school you’d be happy to support.

59 News from the council…

Whole Estate Plan To help create the plan, the council is seeking the views of residents, groups and organisations in the city and will be launching a public consultation in November. The consultation will include three online discussion groups, facilitated by consultants Planning for Real. The council’s City Downland Estate consists of around 12,500 acres and is mostly situated within the South Downs National Park. The Estate was initially acquired by the Council around 100 years ago with the aim of protecting the town’s water

supply and controlling development. The new plan will refresh the previous City Downland Policy, created in 2006, which resulted in significant improvements including an increase in public access. It will include all council owned land within the South Downs National Park, the Agricultural Estate, parks and land used for leisure, sport and recreation. To find ÿÿ out more, visit: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/CDE And look out for the postcards which are ÿÿ being delivered across the city! currently

GENERAL
