6 Meet a local artist…

West Hove Person…Paula Fahy Artist and teacher Paula Fahy lives in Leicester Villas. She will be exhibiting at this year’s Artists Open Houses festival in the last weekend of May and four weekends in June. What will your open house be like this year, with all the restrictions? It will be fantastic. I have been taking part in the festival for the last twelve years and have never been so excited! This year, once again, I have talented artists exhibiting alongside me and we will have such fun welcoming visitors into my home and garden safely. We will be following all suggested guidelines. Past years have been well attended with lots of positive feedback. We are part of the West Hove trail; a group of really inclusive and friendly people. Do have a look at the map when the leaflet pops through your letter box. We are all keen to show what we have been creating in the last two years.

I spend many hours taking photographs and use these to aid my memory of visits to the countryside and gardens providing a springboard to start my paintings Tell us about your artwork… My paintings are inspired by a love of colour and nature. I spend many hours taking photographs and use these to aid my memory of visits to the countryside and gardens providing a springboard to start my paintings. I use oil paint mixed with glaze medium. I work on the floor which allows me the freedom to be quite physical with the paint. I am trying to create a feeling of movement to reflect the vitality of the world around us. I love exploring colour combinations and often

start my paintings by using a fluorescent acrylic ground. My work varies in scale but most of it is quite large to allow me to achieve gestural marks that reflect a range of movements. Who are your favourite artists? I am inspired by many. Having taught for over 30 years, exploring artists’ work is a vital part of the curriculum and so I am discovering artists new to me constantly. However, I am always moved by the work of Mark Rothko, Albert Irvin and Cy Twombly. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love cycling, gardening, visiting galleries, walking and reading. I also enjoy our fantastic shops. I have realised I can get everything locally and do not need to use the supermarkets so much! West Hove is such a brilliant place to live and Leicester Villas is so friendly. I never want to move! For more information visit www.paulafahy.com

20-storey tower planned for Kingsway Synergy Property Group have revised their plans for the Gateway Hove site on the south side of Kingsway. The site is located between the “336” flats (next to the Gather Inn pub) and Pets Corner, to the north of Aldrington Basin. Planning permission was granted in 2013 for a development of business premises and 52 flats in six separate blocks varying from four to six storeys, known as PortZED; however, this was not built and the landowner, Colin Brace, is now working with Synergy.

The Gateway Hove site

Synergy consulted around 2,000 local homes last summer on proposals which included business premises and 172 homes in two zones of 6-11 storeys. Following this feedback, as well as pre-application discussions with the council, a new scheme is being drawn up.

The buildings would be in line with The Gather Inn and the developers are now looking at brickwork instead of glass as the primary material for the façades. There would be car parking in the levels below Kingsway and amenity spaces for occupiers on the tops of some buildings.

The developers have shown their latest plans to local groups including the Kingsway and West Hove Residents’ Association (KAWHRA) and the West Hove Forum. The number of flats has been reduced to 150 above business units.

KAWHRA Chair Peter Reeves commented: “Whilst the current proposals have taken some account of earlier consultation feedback, the concerns about overall bulk, over-development and likely overshadowing of nearby properties seem to have been The latest proposals show a continuous line largely ignored. 10 An update from your Local Action Team…

News from the West Hove Forum Parks and Open Spaces

An overflowing bin at Stoneham Park

At our last meeting on 31st March, one of the subjects discussed was parks and open spaces. All our representatives from local parks and open spaces groups have identified common issues. Most have had problems with vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Our local PCSO told us that there are now regular patrols to every business at Hove Lagoon and “Operation Apollo” means that there are now always two to four officers in Hove patrolling green spaces and the seafront. This was started last year due to Covid, in order to stop big groups gathering, but will continue this summer.

Last summer a lot of police were off work with Covid or self-isolating, but there should be more officers available this year. Last summer a lot of police were off work with Covid or self-isolating, but there should be more officers available this year. Stoneham Park will be prioritised for patrols as there are concerns there over anti-social behaviour. A number of complaints have been reported about drug dealing in parks and in the area around Hove Museum. If you see any drug dealing, please report this to 101 and the police can then follow it up. Another common issue for our open spaces groups is waste disposal. As Hove Lagoon comes under the council’s Seafront team, the bins there are emptied at weekends. There are no collections by Cityparks at weekends, however, which means that Wish Park and Stoneham Park have overflowing bins by Sunday. The Friends of Stoneham Park have been told

that they will get some extra bins, but no date for this has been given. Our councillors will raise this issue for us with the council. West Hove Seafront Action Group stressed the need for the council to gear up to deal with an extremely busy summer - in terms of both waste disposal and public toilet facilities. Sewage Pollution Following last year’s issues of sewage release and storm outflow polluting the sea off Hove and making the water unsafe, Hove MP Peter Kyle has held a couple of meetings over Zoom with an executive from Southern Water. Southern Water are now working with Surfers Against Sewage to develop an information release platform to alert users to any incidents of pollution and Peter has been invited to attend a task force on this issue in Peacehaven. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 26th May via Zoom. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

We welcome you to Boundary Implant Centre. Boundary Implant Centre is very well placed on our bustling Boundary Road, the surgery has been established for close to 50 years. Dr. Boji purchased the business in July 2020. Over the last year, Dr. Boji has taken the time to renovate the surgery bringing in state-of-the-art technologies to offer the best treatment he can locally. Having been practising for almost 30 years he holds extensive knowledge in his field. Alongside Dr. Boji there is a fabulous team of fully qualified staff at the practice ready to help complete your patient journey. We realise that very few people enjoy going to the dentist and we like to take the time to highlight the most common fears and create relations to make your visits more relaxing. At Boundary Implant Centre, we welcome nervous patients, offering a more relaxed setting to put you at your ease. What can we do? At Boundary Implant Centre we offer all your routine general dentistry needs, cosmetic treatments, and all forms of minor oral surgery. Is there a reason you have been putting off going to a dentist? A new patient examination is just £50 and includes all radiographs. (with this advert) Alongside routine treatments, Dr. Boji has a keen interest in oral surgery and placing implants, leaving many happy smiles with prices from just £1200. Another passion and service we offer is treatment with laser therapy. It is easy to neglect your gums because we cannot see what happens below the surface. It is quite common to see people with

bone loss and over time this can lead to loose teeth. Conventional gum treatments can be extremely uncomfortable, however with the system we use at Boundary Implant Centre bone regeneration is much more positive and relatively painless (words we like to read). Another special service we offer is impression-free treatments. Having a crown, denture, or gum shield made involves taking an impression in the mouth. Many patients fear this process, we are extremely excited to be able to offer impression-free treatments. All our dental treatments such as crowns will be prepared with digital imaging. We welcome you to Boundary Implant Centre. What can we help you with today? Call 01273 418404 email info@dentist-hove.co.uk

Hove and Kingsway Bowls Club is open again…

Hove and Kingsway Bowls Club Re-Opens... The greens are open again at the Hove and Kingsway Bowls Club on the seafront. 2020 was the 50th anniversary of the Hove and Kingsway clubs merging in 1970 and we had lots of events planned which had to be cancelled. This year looks much more promising. We have bands lined up to play outdoors on Sundays through the summer and we are looking forward to a full season of bowls. The clubhouse has had a lick of paint inside and out whilst closed and is now opening up again with its popular bar and café. We are lucky to have this community asset in the heart of Hove with two greens and modern changing rooms with lockers and loos right next to the greens. The club has a surprisingly wide age range of members and is now welcoming new members and those who fancy trying a sport which offers a great way of relaxing, keeping fit and socialising in the open air. Something we all need at the moment!

For those new to bowls the club has a wide selection of bowls for hire and people are often on hand to show you how to play. For those new to bowls the club has a wide selection of bowls for hire and people are often on hand to show you how to play. You can pay and play to use the greens if you want a casual try of the sport. The club also regularly hosts groups from the local community, from charities supporting vulnerable adults to organisations looking for team days out as well as groups of friends and family who want an open-air, easy-to-play activity to have a go at.

Although the greens are now open you may have noticed the netting around the greens is still in place. This is because last year the grass sustained a lot of damage from people using the greens for activities other than bowls. The grass is surprisingly easy to damage so we do ask that everyone keep off the grass, unless to play bowls, in which case come on down, we look forward to seeing you. This is the time to join the club as it is offering 50% off membership for the year. It is now £24 for adults and only £2.50 for kids for the year. There is also a couple’s membership for only £39. As a member you can play socially, enter club competitions or play in regular friendly matches with other clubs. We also have places in both the men’s and mixed league teams if you want to play competitively. Members also receive a 20% discount at the clubhouse bar and 10% off at the café. 17 Poets Corner news…

The last few weeks have been quite chilly, certainly compared with the same time last year. Still, the park is looking cheery and vernal as the trees come into bloom even if the grass is looking a little bit tired and the sandpit empties on the cold sea winds. Hopefully, as the end of Lockdown gets nearer, we can get on with making the place look fit for purpose again. Our call-out for volunteers for the summer fair provisionally in July got a good response. We are still on the look out for people to help run some children’s stalls, serve food and drink, and act as marshals on the day. If you can spare just an hour to help, that would be really appreciated. Those readers who are new to the area won’t know about the real ale bar and the Pimm’s stall we had back in 2019, the pizza, curries, hot dogs, ice-cream, bouncy castle, musical acts, children’s entertainers, assault course, face painting, hook-aduck and all the other fun. If you can help, please get in touch at events@friendsofstonehampark.uk. We are also on the hunt for anyone in a band, or who plays an instrument and would like to perform at the fair. We were lucky enough to have a fantastic accordionist at our last Christmas market and have been blessed with the sweet strumming of a ukulele player, folk musicians, choirs and brass bands before. So, if you have always wanted to perform in public but never felt able to give it a go, now’s your chance! This month might also be the month we go for the outdoor cinema. Please keep a look

out at our social media and our website, www.friendsofstonehampark.uk. If you haven’t been into the park for a while, you may not have seen that our mural painter in residence has been remarkably busy painting and re-painting the small kick wall. We have been treated to a 3D bee and then a 3D butterfly, the Incredible Hulk and now a new artist has come and painted the other side with an aquamarine woman with underwater wavy hair. It is fabulous! We are, as ever, grateful to Fek and, now, Mazcan who make the park look bright and beautiful even in the dreariest of times. 19 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

We all know that Westbourne Ward is an amazing place to live – probably the best place in the city – so it’s great to finally get back to visiting the wonderful shops, restaurants and pubs in our area following lockdown easing. Thank you to everyone who has made a huge effort to make this experience safe and enjoyable for everyone. We are expecting this summer to be very busy in the city and especially on the Hove seafront, so are lobbying hard for more bins, more collections and more public toilets. We’re really pleased that we have got some temporary toilets for Hove seafront. It’s not good enough and it’s not a longterm solution so the next step is to work to get the permanent ones renovated and expanded. We really want everyone who has a staycation in Hove to go home at the end of it and say “we love Hove and want to return next year”. More and more people are also keen on exercising, walking and cycling outdoors, so we’re in full discussions with the Seafront Development Team on getting the Western Esplanade revamped and fit for purpose. You have hopefully had a leaflet from us asking for your views on the stretch of seafront that includes tennis, bowls and multi-sport. If you didn’t receive one you can always email us your views. Our idea is not to dismantle or ruin the beautiful low-level, historic feel to the stretch but to get modern facilities that families in Westbourne can enjoy. Did you know we are a Fairtrade city with an impressive range of local shops and businesses which actively support Fair Trade partnerships with producers around the world? Fair Trade Brighton and Hove are proud of our innovative approach to promoting Fair Trade across the city. March was Fairtrade Fortnight and there were many events we were involved in including working with the Rwenzori Sus-

tainable Trade Centre (RSTC) in Western Uganda which works with Fairtrade coffee, cocoa and cotton farmers. We want to strengthen their trade links with Brighton & Hove-based coffee roasters. In April we were involved in the fashion revolution week, which focussed on fair and local production and recycling. Following Council’s approval of the 20 minute neighbourhood initiative, we are also involved in a local 20 minute neighbourhood project, exploring the potential to deliver environmental improvements locally through resident action. We hope this will encourage more residents to support our local business and visit our local parks and gardens and the seafront. 23 News from the Friends of Hove Park…

Return to Hove Park One would hope everyone would take care of this much loved park but unfortunately some people’s activities have been at its expense and its enjoyment by others. Litter just left where they’ve been sitting instead of

disposed of responsibly or taken home and even some plants vandalised - this poor goat willow with its main stem snapped off fortunately refuses to be beaten with new shoots growing up.

People have now returned to many of their previous activities in the park. The tennis courts and football pitch are back in operation and barriers have been removed from the adult exercise equipment. Visitors relax and enjoy the cherry and other spring blossom.

24 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Hove Park Councillor News COVID-19:

King George VI Avenue:

In the week up to Good Friday, the number of confirmed cases in the city fell by a healthy 50%, with the case rate among our most vulnerable 60+ residents the lowest of all the age groups. This was positive news, especially as that was the week when lockdown measures started to be eased.

Some of you were quite rightly upset that the grass verges (with tulips) were mowed last month without notice. Councillors were not notified so I have put your concerns to officers in very strong terms. This should not happen again. I just wish that officers were as quick to act on reports of anti-social behaviour as they are on rogue verges!

Contractor Cabinets on Nevill Rd: New telecoms cabinets were installed opposite the One Stop. I queried these with officers and an officer visited the site and measured the cabinets after the event. I can advise that they are considered permitted development (i.e. do not need planning permission) and that councillors were not consulted beforehand. It is unlikely that a mast could be installed without permission. Goldstone Retail Park: A new LIDL store opened at the Retail Park on 8 April. As your ward councillors, Vanessa and I welcome the jobs and the choice. We will monitor the impact on the local area so if you have any concerns (or praise) then please get in touch.

Highways and Transport Concerns: Apologies were received from officers for delays in responding to your concerns. Queries raised are being dealt with by different teams within the City Transport Division. Officers will be following up on Zone P consultation comments and doing site visits in mid-May. Discussions between officers and developers at Toads Hole Valley continue regarding the assessment of various transport options. More on this next time. Hove Park: Please take excess rubbish home with you and leave our park clean. More bins are on the way.

Sackville Trading Estate:

Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen

The developers, MODA, expect demolition work to start in June/July and I will have a rolling update here. Build work will begin along the southern boundary before moving to the middle of the site. MODA will organise invites for residents to visit the site if they so wish. We have also approached the three primary schools in the Hove Park ward (Aldrington, Bilingual and Cottesmore) and MODA will arrange for artwork from children at the three schools to go on the site hoardings.

29 Meet the Principal of Shoreham College…

Hove Park person… Sarah Bakhtiari Sarah Bakhtiari lives in the Hove Park area and became the Principal of Shoreham College in January 2021. HOVE PARK

How long have you lived in the Hove Park area? I have been lucky enough to live in the Hove Park area for 10 years. Before living here I had no idea that the Three Cornered Copse existed - a little sanctuary in the heart of our city! Why did you want to join Shoreham College? I’ve long been interested in Shoreham College - a school that prioritises the individual child and their wellbeing, that has an inclusive ethos and can nurture and support children on an Oxbridge pathway as well as those on an apprenticeship pathway. Shoreham College stands out as a school for families with no barriers to entry and no barriers to potential. A truly inclusive school, with children from age 3-16, our warm welcome extends regardless of gender, academic progress so far and ambition for the future. This resonates with my own sense of integrity and my own experience of being mum to three very different children. What will children get from Shoreham College that they might not get from another school? Happy children are successful children and wellbeing underpins academic success. Everything else will follow. Other schools may have rigorous entry requirements that test to see whether children fit the mould of the school. At Shoreham College, we have no predetermined ‘best fit’. Individuality is prized and we help

our children to grow into themselves and celebrate them as the unique individuals that they are. Are there any scholarships available? We have academic, arts, sports, and all-rounder scholarships and, as you will imagine, competition is strong for these prestigious awards. Children are nominated for a scholarship by their current headteacher, or if they are already at Shoreham College, by their assistant head. What are your interests outside work? I am kept out of mischief by my three daughters, two dogs and husband! My family are very sporty and whilst I share the enthusiasm, I do not share the ability! You will find me some distance behind, whether that be running, in a fitness class or snow ploughing my way slowly down a mountain. 31 News from the council…

A Road with a View Over the past 12 months, I have been fortunate to have one, perhaps surprising, view that has never failed to lift my spirits whilst out for permitted exercise or cycling to work on even the gloomiest wet winter morning - Portland Road stretching before me with Whitehawk Hill (topped by its huge communications mast) dominating the distant skyline.

GENERAL

With just a little imagination, the buildings and traffic are swept away and one can imagine the breath-taking view greeting early Neolithic tribal farmers as they gazed at the uninterrupted landscape eastwards. For crowning Whitehawk Hill is one of Britain’s earliest and largest stone age monuments – one of the earliest ritual circles in Britain (predating Stonehenge by 1,000 years), more ancient even than any other ritual circle to be found elsewhere in northern Europe. Some 5,500 years ago, our city’s earliest residents chose that commanding location, with its views over the sea and the Downs, to build a causewayed enclosure of four concentric rings of ditches and banks. Clearly visible to the Neolithic communities for miles around, it acted as a hub for people to gather for ceremonies (feasting, burials, worship) as well as for trade or defence. Visit the Elaine Evans Archaeology Gallery at Brighton Museum to find out more. To learn about the history of Hove, join a guided historical walking tour led by a local historian. Hove Actually Walking Tours are fun, informative and best suited to the incurably curious. Whether it’s your first visit or you have lived here your whole life, the tours are a great way to discover and uncover the area. 33 Advertorial; focussing on an ethical business aiming to end the use of single use cups...

Time for a Global WAKEcup? Global WAKEcup is a zero waste reusables brand with a mission to end single-use plastic pollution for good. Based in the UK, Global WAKEcup was born in 2018 after old friends Buffie and Nick got chatting about David Attenborough’s iconic Blue Planet series and realised they needed to get involved in the fight against single-use plastics.

Global WAKEcup is more than just stylish, sustainably sourced coffee cups and water bottles. It’s a movement towards a world where everyone can choose to reuse, and say no to single-use. Please support us and our charity partners by visiting our shop at: globalwakecup.com/ collections/shop Why we need a zero waste revolution Each year, 100 billion coffee cups end up in

landfill. A plastic bottle can take up to 1000 years to decompose. By 2050, there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish. These facts are what keep us going, and why we make our products from natural, recyclable materials like bamboo, stainless steel, copper and glass. As well as globalwakecup.com we supply Selfridges, Not On The High Street and The Queen’s Estate at Sandringham. Designed in the UK, we source materials and products from suppliers across the globe, with ethical standards for all workers in the supply chain a key priority, undertaking independent audits on an annual basis. We also use plastic-free packaging, including green jiffy bags, recycled cardboard and paper tape. From our #1weekplasticfree challenge to our podcast on climate action, we’re constantly campaigning for change at an industry and everyday level. Get involved by connecting with us on Instagram @ globalwakecup for daily zero waste inspiration. Small changes matter, so we hope that we can give you the tools to make a difference. Our charity partners We donate 10% of all our profits to the Marine Conservation Society. From organising mass beach cleans to campaigning for plastic bans, every purchase you make is helping fund vital work protecting sealife and marine habitats. www.globalwakeup.com

GENERAL

Fast forward to 2021, and the crisis is more urgent than ever.

34 Peter Kyle on life as an MP…

Peter Kyle celebrates six years as Hove MP We talk to Peter Kyle as he celebrates his sixth anniversary this month as Member of Parliament for Hove and Portslade. What made you want to become an MP? Pretty much every job I’ve ever had has involved a degree of advocacy, giving voice to people struggling to get heard. Over time it inevitably led to me spending more time with politicians trying to bring about change at the top. In the years running up to 2013, when I became a candidate, a few things happened that for the first time made me ask myself if I belonged out front trying to lead change or remain behind the scenes. Hove was a Tory seat at the time and I wasn’t the likely winner of a selection process, so the odds were totally stacked against me actually becoming an MP. But I had the very strong urge to stand up just once and say who I am, what I have to give and talk about my ambitions for our community and country. So that’s what I did and miraculously, almost unbelievably, here I am! What is the achievement you are most proud of since you were elected? Bringing politics to our high street so everyone feels connected to their MP and hiring a diverse group of people that I think are the kindest, most professional and hardest working of any political team in the country. Up in Parliament I’m most proud that I’ve simply got better at the job over time and that’s because I always jumped in despite how intimidating a lot of the situations were. Early on I was in the chamber, it was very rowdy and, frankly, terrifying but I had something in my head I wanted to say but wasn’t sure if I had the bottle to do

it. I remember thinking to myself, ‘People in Hove and Portslade chose you against the odds for a reason, and it wasn’t to sit quietly!’ Have you been able to do as much as you thought you would? Oh, I’ve got loads more done than I ever thought was possible from opposition! From getting Mike Ashley to admit in public that he’d failed his workers, which led to thousands of Sports Direct employees getting permanent contracts and workplace rights for the first time, right through to changing the law to prevent abuse survivors being cross-examined in court by their abusers. I loved being on the business select committee and playing a key role in delivering the energy price cap and the net zero carbon target and many more issues that really matter to people. Then there was the ‘Kyle-Wilson’ amendment which came within 12 votes of delivering a confirmatory referendum on Theresa May’s Brexit deal. It’s received wisdom that people go into politics full of idealism and gradually get it knocked out of you. For me it’s been the opposite. I’m taking on bigger and more ambitious challenges as time goes on! What is the most frequent question you get asked by constituents? ‘Are you related to Jeremy Kyle?’ is a common one (no, I’m not!). Most people who stop me in the street just want to make a quick comment about something in the news. But I’ll also get up

35 to 450 messages a day asking my views about everything from power generation from food waste (sounds great!) to scrapping the police because we’re a free society (err, no thanks!). Abuse towards people in public life is well known but I wish there was more recognition of just how friendly and kind most people are towards us.

The cost of renting or buying a home and generally living here really worries me. I detest the thought of someone being born, raised, educated and in love with our community but not being able to afford to live here when they become an adult. It’s why I’ve been so strident in getting excellent quality mixed property developments off the drawing boards, like the impending Moda scheme at Sackville Trading Estate. I’ve thrown myself into challenges that have failed to materialise for generations, like a new accessible footbridge by Hove Station. Also, the King Alfred development and something I’m hugely passionate about which is filling all that dead space between the Lagoon and King Alfred with world-class modern facilities that bring people and generations together in healthy, fun activity. You are also in Labour’s shadow justice team. Tell us about that… I’ve campaigned for so long on safeguarding issues like keeping women and girls free from harassment and violence, and getting the law up to date for emerging crimes like ‘sex for rent’. So when Keir called to offer me this job I said ‘yes’ before he’d even finished his first sentence! Speaking from the front bench gives you an amplified platform and loads more tools to utilise. In my 11 months on the front bench I’ve drafted an entire Victims Rights Bill which will give a whole set of rights to every victim of crime and persistent antisocial behaviour.

GENERAL

What do you see as the main issues for Hove at the moment?

What are you most looking forward to once restrictions are eased? Priority number one is to hug my dad, something I’ve not been able to do for over a year which is just unnatural! I totally love the gym. I will be standing outside, gym bag in hand, waiting for the moment it reopens! And then a trip to the cinema with my best mate and plenty of meals with friends will fill any spare time for many months to come! Finally, there’s one thing above all I just can’t wait for. It’s something that has kept me totally in love with our community for decades and I’m as excited for now as I am every other winter: sitting on Hove beach on a hot summer’s day, nibbling picnic food, going for dips in the sea, and enjoying it all with friends. It’s the highlight of my year without fail! You can email Peter at hove.portslade@ parliament.uk Telephone: 01273 933380 Website: www.peterkyle.co.uk

37 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Hove’s Secret Forest

GENERAL

As recently as the 90s there was an enormous forest that ranged from Brighton to Selsey, but now there are only remnants left. You’re unlikely to have heard of it, and you’ll almost certainly not have seen it. This is because it’s made of kelp and it lives beneath the waves.

Kelp is a giant seaweed and it can form massive swathes of waving green fronds in the shallows of the nearshore Sussex coastline. You can probably imagine that a large area of green sub-marine foliage adds a bit of structural diversity to the sea-bed and this is one of the reasons it is a magnet for sea-life. All the remnants of creatures that wash up on our pebble beach have to live somewhere, and that place is in what remains of the kelp forest just out of sight off our coast. Cuttlefish bones are common after a high tide and stormy weather, but these were once alive and swimming through the fronds of kelp. Kelp forests provide fantastic places for young fish to grow whilst being able to hide from predators such as seals. I hadn’t even heard of this habitat before I moved to Sussex so why should we care. Well, get ready for some pretty big reasons. One: climate change. Kelp draws down and locks up a seriously significant amount of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Kelp forest globally sucks out

twice the amount of carbon that the UK emits in a year! Two: flood defences. It doesn’t take an engineer to realise that having a load of anchored material on the seabed might get in the way of any big waves and considerably reduce the energy with which they hit our beaches. Who knows, maybe one day in 20 years when the kelp forests are back to their previous extent, the promenade won’t become an honorary beach every winter. Wishful thinking. And three: fish. Plants take out carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and shove out oxygen. Additional oxygen in the water increases the amount of life that can live in the water around the kelp and therefore increases the amount of fish living there, including commercial species. The Help Our Kelp Project has recently been successful in campaigning for a ban of trawling for fish in areas where kelp forest grew historically so hopefully we’ll feel some of the effects soon. Check out the project website for more information. glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

Free Covid tests now for everyone... Everyone can and is encouraged to take twice-weekly Covid tests, even when we have no symptoms. Around 1 in 3 people who have Covid show no symptoms. As lockdown measures begin to relax, regular rapid testing is fundamental to helping us quickly spot positive cases and stop any outbreaks. If we all get into the habit of taking regular tests, reporting our results and self-isolating if we’re positive, we can get back to seeing the people we love and doing the things we enjoy. In Brighton & Hove you can get tested in several convenient ways.

collect two boxes at a time; each box contains seven tests.

Pick up a test pack to take at home: If you’re happy to test yourself at home, you can collect tests from various locations.

NHS Test & Trace sites: These operate as symptomatic testing sites in the morning but are currently providing an afternoon collect option, where you can pick up test kits to use at home. Visit: find-covid-19-rapid-test-sites.maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk.

Pharmacy Collect and Community Collect: People can go to a participating pharmacy and pick up free test kits to use at home. Across Sussex, local authorities are also setting up test kit collection sites from libraries. Search this NHS England website - maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk/ findatestcentre.html - to find sites that offer collection of LFD (lateral flow device) test packs. In Brighton & Hove you can currently collect kits from: •

Jubilee Library – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday 10am–5pm, and Sunday 11am–5pm

Hove Town Hall – Monday to Saturday 8am–5pm, and Wednesday until 8pm

There’s no need to book and over the coming weeks more sites will be added. Only people over 18 should use Community and Pharmacy Collect. People can

Order online: If you can’t access tests through the other routes, you can order test kits online at www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests or by calling 119, which will be delivered to your home. Community testing: Tests can be booked at participating pharmacies or at a testing centre at Hove Town Hall. These tests are taken under supervision of a member of staff who will process your result within 30 minutes. They must be booked in advance at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/communitytesting If you have symptoms, book a PCR test: Anyone with symptoms of Covid should not use LFD test kits. 45 A new season at BOAT…

Brighton Open Air Theatre returns One of the first shows will be a production of Alan Bennett’s play The Lady in the Van, a funny and poignant tale about the generosity of the human spirit, possibly. It’s the original stage play of the popular film and is by the Sarah Mann Company, following their smash hit last year with Abigail’s Party. The cast will include Nathan Ariss, Nick Bartlett, Pip Henderson, Jack Kristiansen, Sarah Mann and Paul Moriarty.

“When Miss Shepherd drove her van into my garden in 1974 friends used to ask me if I was planning to write a play about her. I wasn’t, but 25 years later I did.” The play tells a mostly true story of Alan Bennett’s friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman, who lived in a van on his driveway in the 1970s. Alan Bennett said: “When Miss Shepherd drove her van into my garden in 1974 friends used to ask me if I was planning to write a play about her. I wasn’t, but 25 years later I did.” Miss Shepherd came for three months and stayed for 15 years. The play will run from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th May at 7pm, with matinées at 2pm on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost £15 (concessions £13.50).

49 News from the council…

Become a “groundwater guardian” That’s the message from The Aquifer Partnership (TAP), which is offering simple ways for residents, gardeners, community organisations and businesses to help safeguard the chalk aquifer of the South Downs that supplies water to over 1.2m people and is under increasing threat from climate change. High levels of nitrate have been recorded in Brighton & Hove’s water supply. TAP’s top tips for caring for the aquifer are: 1. Create a rain garden: Rain gardens are designed to mimic the natural processes that break down pollution and reduce flood risk by slowing water down. They use the power of plants to filter and cleanse polluted water. Easy to incorporate into a garden or allotment, it can be as simple as a planted area with gravel and sand layers below to cleanse water before it filters into the ground. For more advice see: raingardens.info 2. Drain your driveway: To avoid excessive surface water run-off, it’s a good idea to choose permeable paving and have it properly installed. Take a look at the Royal Horticultural Society’s guide to permeable driveways (rhs.org.uk). 3. Healthy plants – help your herbaceous perennials: You can prevent chemicals leaching into the groundwater by avoiding chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Well-rotted manure can be spread and dug into the soil in spring, rather than in the autumn. Companion plants help to attract beneficial insects, taking those unwanted pests’ attention away from your prize blooms and veggies.

Above: Create a rain garden Left: Phacelia will help improve soil health

4. Don’t leave your beds bare! Don’t leave your beds bare over winter – sow “green manure” seeds such as phacelia or crimson clover in the autumn and they will help improve soil health and prevent nitrate leaching. The flowers also attract beneficial insects like hoverflies. Phacelia makes an excellent companion for kale, broccoli and tomatoes – and it’s very fast-growing! 5. Only rain down the drain: Most road drains and surface drains are designed to carry only rainwater. Pouring pollutants down these drains is like pouring them straight into the groundwater via a soakaway. Just one litre of oil can pollute one million litres of drinking water. For more information about the work of TAP, visit www.wearetap.org.uk

51 News from the council…

With crowds of people gathering on the beach and seafront, Brighton & Hove City Council are urging people to take their rubbish home if bins are full.

Consultation on household waste tips The council are holding a consultation to ask residents their views on the future of the city’s household waste recycling sites, or tips. The first question is whether the council should start charging for certain types of materials that aren’t normal ‘household waste’ like rubble, soil, plasterboard, tyres and asbestos. The second question is whether there should be ID checks to ensure the people using the sites are Brighton & Hove residents.

They have put around 70 additional large communal-type bins on the seafront, but some people are still leaving their waste beside the existing triple bins while the new ones remain empty. Clear signage is being put on the new bins to ensure people know they can be used, as some people think they may be for trade use only. But even if these additional bins do become full, people should find a bin that isn’t full or take their rubbish home. Additional measures to tackle the build-up of waste on the beach and seafront include: •

Signage reminding people to take their litter home if the bin is full

Extra signage reminding people they face on-the-spot fines of £150 for littering

Additional staff until the end of the summer to collect waste

Pavement stencilling and vinyls from Brighton Station to the seafront reminding people to use a bin that’s not full or take their rubbish home.

As accepting non-household waste costs money, the council have decided it may now be time to start charging for disposing of rubble, soil, plasterboard, tyres and asbestos. The money charged would be reinvested into Cityclean services like street cleansing. Many councils already charge for some or all of these waste types. ID checks only take place at present for van users to ensure they are residents of the city and are not disposing of trade waste. However, evidence shows people from outside the city are using our recycling sites. This means Brighton & Hove taxpayers are paying for the disposal of waste from non-Brighton & Hove residents. The consultation ends on 31 May. You can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ rubbish-recycling-and-streets/household-waste-recycling-sites

57 Advertorial...an interview with Paul Leonard, the local businessman behind NESTY Homes...

Solving your Property Problems... Paul – can you tell us about NESTY HOMES? NESTY Homes is a Hove based family business here to solve people’s property problems. We help sellers, buyers, landlords and investors who need more support and better solutions than they’re currently being offered right now.

We also help renters who want to buy but don’t have the deposit yet or mortgage approval; buy with our rent-to-buy program. This works for both the seller and the renter as it’s guaranteed payment/ income for both sides of the agreement. Can you give an example of an assisted sale? Of course – ‘Glendaruel’ was a 2-bed terraced house that was not selling at the price the owner wanted. It needed lots of attention though the owner didn’t have the time or money to complete the work. We agreed with the owner a sell price they were happy with and we completely refurbished the place. I It sold within 12 days for over the asking price and even broke the record sell price for that size of property in the area! The house also received a record number of viewings and received 5 offers above asking price. It was a great result for everyone involved – allowing the owner a hassle-free way to move on. The agent was super-happy as the standard was above the norm for a refurbished place.

GENERAL

We help people sell their place when it’s not selling for the price they want. We do what’s called an assisted sale where we refurbish the property at no cost to the owner then we sell it for them. We ensure they get the sale price they want, handle all the refurbishing, decoration and management of the sale. Before

After

and price they wanted, with no hassle. The agency loved it as they’d seen the transformation, sold quickly - and higher than it would have been so got higher commission. The buyer got a lovely home to move into. What’s in it for NESTY? We get to do the thing we love – refurbishing – without the long-winded and additional costings of a purchase. We take on the risk that the property will achieve, a value that will encompass our costs plus profit – if it doesn’t, we miss out – not the owner, not the agent. How can someone find out more? Call, message or email us for a free, no obligation, no hard sell – happy to chat nestyhomes.com 01273 809503/07388 033621

61 Look out for the Pier to Pier bench…

Pier to Pier provides a snapshot of coastal life Throughout May/June, a bright orange audio bench will be appearing in a range of locations between Brighton and Worthing Piers. The bench will play recordings of local people, including a fisherman, a sea swimmer, a nurse, a busker, giving their views of what it’s like to live on the very edge of the country.

The public will be invited to sit on the bench at 10 locations across the 14 miles between the two piers. They will listen to a soundscape which includes fragments from 14 people who live and work along the coast. Stories include Ron, a Goring fisherman, describing being at sea during an eclipse. ‘There was nothing between the sea and the sky. I had to keep looking back. But out there was a complete black hole. Completely black, not anything, nothing at all.’ The audio reminiscences will also feature a soundtrack of a new arrangement created especially for the project by film composer Jocelyn Pook, responsible for the music in Eyes Wide Shut and Gangs of New York. This arrangement will be sung by over 50 community choir singers from all along the Sussex coast who have been rehearsing online before being recorded for the final piece. The bench will be positioned in spots looking out to sea, such as on Brighton Palace Pier, Shoreham Fort and in the South Downs National Park, and anyone is free to sit, take a moment and listen.

GENERAL

Pier to Pier is a piece of public art and has been created and devised by RAPT Theatre and will be running from 10 May 6 June 2021.

Emma Higham and Lisa Peck of RAPT Theatre explain: “This piece explores the notion of living on the edge and finding a point of balance in uncertain times. Our desire is to create something unique, accessible for all and uplifting as we come out of a challenging and difficult year. We hope that the act of walking, listening to others’ stories and sitting on a bench usually a spot for people to share conversations - will offer connection at a time when contact is limited.’ The sound installation can be experienced at any time and adheres to Covid-19 restrictions including social distancing. The first appearance of the bench is on 10 May at Brighton Pier. Pier to Pier is funded by Arts Council England, Chalk Cliff Trust and Enjoolata Foundation. More details and a map of the bench’s location can be found at https://www. pier-to-pier.com For more information, contact Emma Higham at rapt.theatre@gmail.com

67 Free creative workshops for children and young people…

Explore the science behind the Big Bang... Brighton’s arts charity Lighthouse is offering free online creative workshops on 8, 15 & 22 May for families and young people as part of its programme for this year’s Brighton Festival.

GENERAL

Led by Leap Then Look, whose creative workshops have been described by Tate galleries as “nothing short of brilliant”, children and young people are invited to explore the science behind the Big Bang using everyday objects found at home. The workshops are inspired by HALO, a multi-sensory installation by artists Semiconductor taking place this May at Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts, made with the help of physicists in response to a residency at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva. Also included in Lighthouse’s Brighton Festival programme is Informals II, an exhibition and live performance created by artists Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kὒuhne in collaboration with a group of young Brighton musicians.

“Our work is about making connections between art, technology, science and society and our programme for this year’s Brighton Festival shines a light on people and things that might not be immediately visible.” Alli Beddoes, Artistic Director and CEO of Lighthouse, says: “Our work is about making connections between art, technology, science and society and our programme for this year’s Brighton Festival shines a

light on people and things that might not be immediately visible. “From creative workshops exploring particle physics; to an audio trail featuring the voices of women on the outskirts of the city; and an exhibition challenging the stereotypes of Brighton’s youth subcultures - we’re inviting you to emerge from Lockdown and take a fresh look at the world.” Lighthouse’s programme for Brighton Festival is part of Re-Imagine Europe, co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union and supported by Arts Council England. Election for Sussex PCC

Wildlife haven success

An election for the next Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) will take place on Thursday 6 May. The PCC elections were postponed last year due to the Covid pandemic.

A set of city council ‘B Banks’ have been hailed a huge success after more than 700 different animal and plant species were found on them.

GENERAL

Police & Crime Commissioners are elected by the public to hold Chief Constables and the police force to account, effectively making the police answerable to the communities they serve. The candidates are: Jamie Bennett (Liberal Democrats) Kahina Bouhassane (Green Party) Katy Bourne (Conservative) Paul Richards (Labour & Co-operative Party)

71 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

You can’t outrun a bad diet If Sarah runs 200 miles a week and Kelly runs 50 miles a week and both eat 500kcal less than they burn a day, who loses more weight? Sarah and Kelly both lose the same number of pounds each week, right?

Professor Pontzer and his team compared the diets and physical activity levels of the Hadza, a hunter-gatherer group in Tanzania, and people in the US. The Hadza did five times more physical activity than Americans. They ate sufficient calories, surprisingly up to 20% of calories in their diets from honey, and included, shock horror, other carbohydrates like tubers. Nevertheless, when the actual number of calories burnt was measured, they burnt no more calories over the course of the day than the average American. How can that possibly be? They came to the conclusion that humans have a finite daily amount of energy they can use and that this capped energy budget is divided up between the body’s essential functions like the immune system, and activities like reproduction and physical activity.

Up until now, it was assumed that the more physical activity we do, the more calories we’ll be using overall, but this isn’t the case. Up until now, it was assumed that the more physical activity we do, the more calories we’ll be using overall, but this isn’t the case. Even though the Hadza were doing five times as much exercise, they still didn’t burn any more calories than the sedentary Americans.

GENERAL

New research totally shakes up the ageold energy balance model of ‘energy in equals energy out’. If you move more, you can eat more, right?

They then looked at markers of immune function and found that the Hadza had reduced ‘immunity’. They started to build a picture which showed that in order to maintain a consistent total daily number of calories burned, or total energy expenditure, the body compensates and takes this energy from our other essential functions like our immunity and reproduction. So, what does this mean in practice? It means you have to watch what you eat. You can’t outrun a bad diet. What it does not mean is that exercise is bad for you. On the contrary, exercise is not only important for maintaining weight, it helps our hearts, lungs and even our brains work well. Just don’t overdo it and listen to your body. Watch out for signs of RED-S, Relative Energy Deficiency Syndrome, eg illness, irritability or amenorrhea. And it definitely means enjoy your food, but in moderation; watch portion sizes and read the labels.

74 News from the council…

City moves towards a circular economy... Brighton & Hove has joined nine other partners from England and France to reduce the creation of waste and move to a circular economy. BLUEPRINT to a Circular Economy, funded by the Interreg France (Channel) England programme, is the first of its kind. It will provide practical solutions for designing out waste and pollution by reusing, repairing and recycling existing resources.

Circular economy principles are based on moving away from the ‘throw-away society’ to one that minimises waste and pollution. Circular economy principles are based on moving away from the ‘throw-away society’ to one that minimises waste and pollution. It keeps products and materials in use for as long as possible and supports the protection of natural resources. Putting the circular economy into practice The new project involves partner organisations across local government, higher education and the private sector. Together they will produce a set of strategies, policies and approaches – the BLUEPRINT model – which will give councils tools to put the circular economy into practice and increase recycling, reduce waste, create new jobs and encourage lasting behaviour change. The project includes training for those who need help finding employment or changing their job and will support residents and schools in changing their behaviour to reduce waste and increase recycling. It will also build on the work Brighton & Hove is doing to create a Circular Economy Routemap for the city.

Buy second-hand

How you can help Ten things you can do to support the project and help tackle the climate crisis: • Reduce your waste • Recycle as much as possible • Have a springtime declutter and see how much you can donate, sell or re-use • See if it can be repaired before buying a new one; learn how to fix things • Pull the plug on plastic and buy plastic-free • Buy second-hand in pre-loved and vintage stores • Give clothes a new life • Reduce food waste and use up leftovers • Take part in community composting • Find out more about the Zero Waste Family programme which will be developed by project BLUEPRINT. Brighton & Hove declared a climate and biodiversity emergency in 2018 and has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030.

77 This exhibition will be at the former Holy Trinity Church in The Lanes…

Fairytale installation at Fabrica In Spring 2021, Fabrica, Brighton’s Centre for Contemporary Art, will present ‘fairytale installation’ The Forked Forest Path by internationally renowned artist Olafur Eliasson. This landmark work will be one of Fabrica’s most immersive and memorable exhibitions to date, as it celebrates its 25th anniversary year. Produced in collaboration with Brighton Festival, the exhibition will run from 18 May to 20 June 2021.

As with many of Eliasson’s works, audiences are encouraged to physically engage with it in order to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Visitors enter via a narrow winding path which forks in the middle of the installation where they must actively choose one path to continue their adventure. The artist’s stipulation for recreating The Forked Forest Path is that galleries must only use branches and saplings sourced locally and sustainably in order to exhibit in their space. Fabrica have been working, since 2019, with Foxwood Forestry near Lewes and the Stanmer Park management team to generate the material for the exhibition. When the exhibition closes, the wood will be chipped and recycled as mulch for growing new trees at Stanmer Park. Liz Whitehead, Director, Fabrica, said: “We are delighted to be able to present this amazing work at Fabrica at the beginning of our 25th anniversary year programme. Through this playful and sensual artwork,

Visitors will be immersed in a space filled with branches, saplings and thinnings, combined with a strong, earthy smell reminiscent of a forest floor. All this works to create the illusion of being lost in a dense wooded environment. visitors will be asked to consider their relationship with nature, their ideas about the countryside and find out about the woods nearby that people can visit for themselves. 79 Great news for local acting group...

Windmill Young Actors... Windmill Young Actors is emerging out of lockdown with good news all round. During the first lockdown we received support from The Arts Council and Brighton and Hove City Council, giving us the ability to provide free online workshops in Script Writing, Film Making and Song Writing, Story Telling and Stage Combat to young people all over the city.

It is deeply reassuring to know that funding bodies want us to survive and continue to provide the work we do creating youth-led arts with the talented young people of this city. Tanushka Marah, the local theatre director who founded Windmill Young Actors, says: “We are excited to embark on a new phase for our youth theatre company. We are re-launching with a family show at Brighton Open Air Theatre and we are also opening free drama clubs in Brighton Youth Centre, Whitehawk and West Brighton soon. We want the experience of making and watching high quality drama to be accessible to all young people. We want drama to be as accessible and easy to join as football. We have free spaces for teenagers from low-income families and we are soon to open free clubs for younger people. Please get in touch with us to find out more.” We run clubs for 7-23 year olds all through the week. Everyone is welcome and taster classes are available. info@windmillyoungactors.com www.windmillyoungactors.com 07932 776 114

81 An underground arts venue is opening up east of the pier…

The Electric Arcade The Electric Arcade is a brand new live theatre, comedy, music and film venue nestled on Brighton beach, just east of the Palace Pier. This multifunctional space will provide a creative hub for Brighton’s diverse arts sector and access to high-quality live performance to the city’s discerning audiences.

Featuring two studio theatres and a main cabaret stage within its organic urban design Featuring two studio theatres and a main cabaret stage within its organic urban design, The Gaiety and The Pit also offer affordable rehearsal space for local artists right in the heart of the city. Ahead of live performance restrictions being eased, the venue’s two theatre spaces are going to be used as rehearsal spaces. Playing host to a range of local arts companies, the venues will house readings, meetings, rehearsals and become writing rooms throughout the spring for stand-up comedians, dancers, playwrights, poets and actors.

Artistic Director Nicola Haydn says: “We’ve always prided ourselves on finding and creating space for artists to develop and hone their skills and this is just an extension of that - nurturing new work is central to what we do. It’s great to be able to have a year-round home again so we can do just that. The performance spaces are due to open with live shows when further restrictions ease but from this weekend our stylish beach front patio is open for business. There might not be live theatre but the stunning view of the sun setting behind Brighton’s iconic pier certainly does provide a bit of drama!” Table bookings are open now and we recommend you reserve your space for this destination venue with front row seats to Brighton’s glorious sunsets. Super sad news...

Brighton Goodbye Comedy Garden Barry It is with great sadness and returns in July shock that we announce the Brighton Comedy Garden is returning to Preston Park from 14-18 July with the ultimate remedy for stand-up lovers from Brighton and beyond.

sudden passing in April of one of our distributors of The Hovarian, Barry Humphrey.

Nish Kumar

Tickets are now on sale for a very special open-air comedy extravaganza featuring stand-up king Dara Ó Briain, multi-award winning Sara Pascoe, observational wizard Josh Widdicombe, the riotous Tom Allen, plus Alan Davies, Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea, Phil Wang, Nina Conti, Reginald D Hunter, Ed Gamble, Sindhu Vee and many (many) more. This year’s specially redesigned event swaps Big Top tent for an awesome outdoor stage and a fully seated open-air theatre bursting with pop-up bars and local street-food heroes.

Barry helped distribute The Hovarian and before that The West Hove Directory for many years. Although we only really knew Barry in a work context he was a very kind, reliable and thoughtful person. He was always a step ahead and would show great initiative in sorting out potential issues before they arose and reporting back what he had done. He was a lovely man and a much valued member of the team and will be greatly missed.

For the full line-up and tickets, visit brightoncomedygarden.co.uk

Our deepest condolences go to his partner Paula and son Harrison.
