Poets Corner news…

The Friends of Stoneham Park Thirty-three days separated the end of one lockdown and the start of this one. With 8th March being mooted as a date for a partial re-opening, many local people will be hoping that this time things will be better managed than previously. Things aren’t helped by the smorgasbord of rules and exceptions we have had to experience. Stoneham Park has been not been spared the sense of confusion, even if it has been spared closure. Last March, the whole park was shut completely for over three months, as were schools, pubs, and many types of shops. In November, schools remained open and so did the park, which seemed to make sense. Now, a Solomonic judgment has been reached, as schools are closed but the park remains open. Despite the freezing weather last month, the park was packed most of the time in polar contrast to the first lockdown where it remained shut under a blazing hot sun. But one has to sympathise, however, with the many parents who see Stoneham Park as a release valve after

The old basketball hoop being removed spending an infuriating morning home-schooling their children. Older children will be happy that, after two-and-a-half years of nagging, the City Council finally accepted our offer to pay for new basketball hoops, and one of these has now been installed. The irony of the park being open and so busy is that the Council have for almost a year banned all volunteering activity of more than one person in their parks. That means no gardening, no tidying-up, and so on. This is such a shame because there is much to do. Regular visitors will have seen that there is even less grass growing than is normally the case, as our small green patches turn brown. This is partly down to a parched area two summers ago never actually recovering and to fallen leaves not being swept up last autumn. The leaves block out the light, air, and nutrients and means that the grass will struggle to regrow in the spring. Someone who threw the leftover vegetables from their Christmas dinner on the lawn, perhaps as some sort of rustic mulch, wasn’t helping, either! If you would like to do something about all this, then look no further than the Friends of Stoneham Park. Get in touch with us on info@ friendsofstonehampark.uk. We’d love to hear from you! Our next meeting, on Zoom, is on Monday 1 March at 7pm. Richard Hearnden The Hovarian would like to apologise for printing Richard’s January article in our February issue as well.

News of a great local charity relocating to Hove Methodist Church…

Stay Up Late charity relocate to Portland Road

Local charity Stay Up Late work with people with learning disabilities to match them up with a volunteer buddy through their Gig Buddies project. The aim is to use a common love of music to support them to develop an ongoing friendship. They are soon to be relocating to Hove Methodist Church in Portland Road. We asked Stay Up Late director Paul Richards about their plans… Tell us more about Stay Up Late… We started as a campaign by the punk band Heavy Load (I played bass). Three of the band members had learning disabilities and we were frustrated seeing many of our disabled fans leaving our gigs by 9pm because support staff couldn’t work late. Our story was featured in the feature documentary also called Heavy Load. Where are you moving from? We had an office at Emmaus but with Covid we wanted to find somewhere where we can hold socially distanced meetings (when allowed) and re-think everything about the way we operate as a charity.

as regular phone check-ins and individual buddies have been making regular contact. In March we launched an online festival ‘Coronavirusfest’ to keep the live music going, streaming sets from bedrooms across the land.

What are your plans once you’ve moved into Hove Methodist Church?

What sort of people can become Gig Buddies?

We’re working with our friends at Nam Yang Martial Arts and Brighton Table Tennis Club (both organisations who share our philosophy around inclusion and community) to help create a community hub. There’s already brilliant work going on at the church with Food and Friendship’s lunch clubs, Chomp and other groups so it’s an exciting time for all of us. Have your Gig Buddies managed to maintain contact throughout the pandemic? We’ve been running loads of online socials (pop quizzes, dance parties, art sessions etc) and coffee mornings as well

Anyone. As long as you’re happy to share your interest with someone with a learning disability. A ‘gig’ can be anything: a drum and bass rave, theatre, walking on the Downs or down at the front in a moshpit. It’s about finding that shared connection with someone and a person with a learning disability having someone in their life who’s not paid to be there. Just a good friend. If you’re interested we’d love to hear from you. For more information, visit stayuplate.org, email info@stayuplate.org or phone 0203 920 8471.

An update from your Local Action Team...

News from the West Hove Forum At our first 2021 meeting, at the end of January, one subject of discussion was the latest state of play with the many developments in West Hove. Sackville Trading Estate: 564 residential units and 260 care community units are to be developed in buildings of up to 15 storeys. Moda Living took ownership of the site in January. Archaeological digs have started and construction work is due to begin in April. New Church Road synagogue: The new synagogue and housing complex is progressing quickly and is expected to open early in 2022. King Alfred Leisure Centre: Crest Nicholson withdrew from the King Alfred development in 2019. The council are exploring alternative options, but due to Covid council officers had to delay doing more surveys last year. Sackville Hotel site on Kingsway: 52 flats are being built on the former hotel site (now known as Aurum Hove) at 189 Kingsway and the 8-storey development is nearing completion. Westerman Complex and Rayford House on School Road: Hyde New Homes are building over 100 homes and offices at the Westerman Complex in School Road. All the homes are due to be finished by autumn 2021. At the top of the same road, Rayford House, an office building, is being converted into over 40 flats under permitted development rights, with new-build sections on the west and east sides. Portland Road flats: The Planning Committee voted last July to give outline planning permission, subject to conditions, for up to 47 flats in a 3-4 storey building on the corner of Olive Road, to replace six houses. However, the developers failed to meet the conditions quickly enough,

New flats being built on the site of the former Sackville Hotel

so the application was refused in October 2020. 239-243 Kingsway: This eight-storey block of 37 flats on the west side of Braemore Road was refused planning permission last year but has recently been allowed on appeal. Gateway Hove: This scheme to build 172 flats in a building rising to 11 storeys above the south side of Kingsway, near The Gather Inn, has recently been through the pre-planning application process. It’s not yet known when a planning application might be submitted West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 31st March, via Zoom. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com.

Westbourne Councillor News Well done Westbourne Ward (and Hove) on maintaining good, safe practice during lockdown. We know that it’s been tough, and have struggled ourselves, but on the whole we can tell the community has pulled together once more. It’s been great to see people helping with food, such as the amazing Food and Friendship at Hove Methodist. And there’s a lot of locals offering free, online activities such as wellbeing and fitness in the spirit of community – so thank you. We also know there’s been problems – such as around Stoneham Park – and we’ve been liaising with the police on this, as well as issues such as speeding along the Poets Corner streets! The key to this is to report, report, report as the more the police hear about a problem spot the more they will prioritise resources. We have found that the easiest and quickest way to report incidents is via the online form at www.sussex.police.uk/ro/report We’ve also been busy within the council on pushing ahead with improvement plans for the seafront and Sackville Road areas. You will see new nets at the Esplanade tennis courts and landscaping work happening soon. The area has been in a state of ‘managed decline’ for too long and we want to see families using the outdoor health areas – needed now more than ever in our Covid world. The Sackville Trading Estate will soon start to see activity happening there as builders move in. We’ve asked the developer if the Hove community can have an input on what goes on the hoarding boards that will surround the site. Use your imagination and send us your ideas to Christopher. henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Please look out for the Hove Station neighbourhood plan, which covers part of the Poets Corner area, too.

Council committee work has continued – this has included speaking on and signing up to the “Excluded UK” campaign, which is demanding support for people excluded from the Government’s Covid support schemes. Carmen has also been working on proposals for an electric vehicle car share, the Climate Assembly and the proposed ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ). In her role as chair of Brighton & Hove Fair Trade, Carmen has been busy helping to organise events for the Fairtrade Fortnight, including the community bake-off - get involved by 5th March here: https://www.bhft.org.uk/fair-trade-brighton-and-home-bakes-2021/ Chris and Carmen Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

13 Meet a former member of ABBA tribute group Björn Again…

Teresa Jane Davis (known as TJ Davis) lives in West Hove. She is a professional singer who has performed as a backing vocalist for Gary Numan, Blur, Tom Jones and D:Ream (with physicist Brian Cox). She did the vocals on Sonic the Hedgehog games and also played Frida in Björn Again for many years. How did you become a singer? It was all I ever wanted to do. I’m from Leeds, went to music college for a year then decided I needed to move to London to pursue my career. I answered every audition going, from pop/rock bands to West End theatre roles, and finally decided the live music scene was where I wanted to be. I’ve done a lot of recording sessions, as well as having my own record out in 2001, but have always preferred touring! Tell us about being in D:Ream with Brian Cox… We sort of crossed over in the band at first but Brian came back to do the Labour Party conferences in 1997 when Labour used D:Ream’s song ‘Things can only get better’. Brian’s great, lovely to work with, but I think he definitely prefers the life of a physicist.  What was it like performing in Björn Again? Did you meet any members of ABBA? I love Abba, so it was a dream come true to perform the songs all over the world. I still perform them with the band 1974 (we are all ex-members of Björn Again) and we do large concerts in Scandinavia every autumn. Some of the band have met the Abba members, but unfortunately I haven’t! What has been the highlight of your career so far? Ooh there’s a few… Supporting the Spice Girls at Wembley Stadium with Björn Again in 1998.

Performing at the Royal Festival Hall when Labour came to power in 1997 – memorable night! First time on Top of the Pops, Christmas Day  What are you doing these days in West Hove? I still gig and tour, but of course that has been severely restricted this year due to the pandemic. I can only hope live music opens up when it is safe to do so, I think we all need it! I have volunteered for ‘Food and Friendship’ since March, which makes hot meals and delivers food to vulnerable and elderly people. I sing for them too at Hove Methodist Church Hall but that part is closed at the moment. I’m looking forward to doing that again when we can. 16 An update from the Friends of Hove Lagoon on their planting scheme consultation…

Hove Lagoon Planting Scheme Thank you for your valuable comments on our planting scheme consultation. We had many responses and are unable to respond to each one in person, so have grouped answers to similar questions below. Comments about specific plant species have been shared with Nick the Landscape Architect. We will do our best to incorporate feedback into the designs considering any conditions placed upon us by the council as land owner, our grant funding and of course the exposed coastal site. We are also overwhelmed by the offers to volunteer. If Covid-19 laws around group activities are relaxed when the time comes for planting we’ll be in touch. Why did you choose that location? Our original ambition was to plant a much larger area but as we started getting quotes it became clear this would not be affordable. With the more modest grants available we wanted to create a quieter area to relax and contemplate nature away from the sporting activities on the south side and family activities around the café and play area on the east side of the lagoon whilst retaining a large grassy open space on the north side. Why have you chosen this style of planting? This style of perennial planting not only suits the exposed coastal conditions, it provides year-round visual interest, increases biodiversity and is more sustainable and cost effective than planting annual bedding plants. It’s a proven concept for civic landscapes used around the UK, Europe and North America designed to provide dense groundcover and keep maintenance costs down by reducing the available space for weeds to grow.

Why didn’t you include any shrubs or larger plants? We had a specific instruction from the council not to include woody shrubs. Many parks in our area are dominated by shrubs which have become too large and woody with patches of bare earth beneath. Properly maintaining shrubs creates a significant volume of woody green waste that is costly to transport off site for composting. At the end of their life they require heavy equipment to remove the roots and leave significant gaps that are costly to fill. Could you include some trees in the scheme? When we first introduced the concept of a planting scheme it included small trees but we had some objections about blocking views. We also have some concerns about planting trees that close to the sea as spray is carried several hundred metres inland from the beach during winter storms and can kill young trees. Even established trees are often deformed or experience stunted growth due to the salty air, as can be seen in Wish Park where trees tend to “lean” inland. What will the scheme look like over winter? Like other similar schemes the plants are designed to be left in place over winter. Grasses and seed heads provide structure as well as food sources for wildlife and cosy hibernation spots for invertebrates. We’ll then clear the dead plants in late winter ready for new growth in spring.

Could you introduce some height or features like boulders?

Why not use funds to repair the pavilions or improve hard landscaping?

We do intend raising the planted area around 15cm using soil and mulch but to raise it any further would require heavy plant and importing a significant volume of topsoil. Similarly, to make sufficient visual impact a boulder would need to be very large and need heavy plant to lift them into place making them cost prohibitive.

The council is responsible for maintaining the structural and hard landscaping of the lagoon. Our grant funding cannot be used to supplement their budget; it can only be spent on incremental improvement projects that meet specific criteria. We do however lobby the council on maintenance matters and make suggestions for longer term improvements should council funding become available.

Are the plants chosen safe for dogs? We have checked the planting list against publicly available information from The Dogs Trust to make sure our planting list is dog friendly.

18 West Hove news…

HMO plans for Adastral House approved Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 10th February, approved plans to turn Adastral House at 7-8 Westbourne Villas from a hotel into a 19-room large house of multiple occupation (HMO). The hotel is a semi-detached pair of three-storey houses, which have been in unauthorised use as a 21-bedroom hostel for the homeless for the past two years. The owners believe the property is unviable as a hotel as it’s too far from the city centre. A planning officer’s report said that a management plan had been provided, which gave officers confidence that the premises would not have a significant adverse impact on neighbours. Residents receive a low level of support and the service is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as well as security officers being employed overnight. A condition has been added to restrict the property to a maximum occupation of 19 residents. Ten objections were received, eight of which were from properties directly affected. Concerns expressed included the safety of other residents in the street and the high number of HMOs already in Westbourne Villas. One objector wrote: “There is a large concentration of older people in their 70s, 80s and 90s in the immediate vicinity of The Adastral, many shielding or self-isolating, confined in their homes. Many have expressed fear for their peace and security by this proposal.” Planning consultant Gareth Giles, speaking on behalf of Westbourne Villas residents who had objected to the application, said that the management plan was unenforceable and the property could be let or sold as a large, unsupervised HMO at any time. As the house next door was also an HMO,

there would be three HMOs in a row. He said residents supported the principle of well-run accommodation for homeless people but a credible management plan should be submitted. Westbourne ward councillor Carmen Appich asked the committee to refuse the application, as there was a lack of confidence in the management plan and she already receives a lot of complaints about another hostel in the street. She was also concerned about the loss of the hotel at a time when Hove seafront is getting more popular. Angelique Glata, director of Elemel, the Community Interest Company which runs the hostel, said it formed part of the council’s homeless initiative. The hostel is full; it doesn’t have a transient population and six of the residents have been there since 2018. There is not a time when there is not a member of staff in situ, she said, and they have a very strict policy on anti-social behaviour. The committee voted by 7-2 to approve the application.

21 Meet a writer who has recently moved to West Hove…

Jo Furniss moved to West Hove during the first lockdown. She is a former BBC journalist who has published three suspense novels, the latest of which, The Last to Know, was released last August. Her first novel, All the Little Children, was an Amazon Charts bestseller. Why did you move from journalism to writing novels? The urge to write fiction was always there, waiting to get out! After I had kids, I took an online Masters and wrote my first novel; All the Little Children is about a mother surviving in post-pandemic England - I was worried no-one would believe it, and yet here we are… Tell us about The Last to Know… It’s a psychological suspense with a dash of gothic. American journalist Rose Kynaston relocates from overseas to the childhood home of her English husband. But Rose and her son receive a cold welcome to Hurtwood. The villagers whisper the name Kynaston like it’s a curse. Everyone knows what happened at Hurtwood House twenty years ago. Everyone except Rose . . . How do you get the ideas for your books? My former life as an expat has helped! My second novel, The Trailing Spouse, was inspired by jet-set business travellers in Singapore - could you get away with murder if you’re in a different city every week? The Last To Know came from my move back to the UK. It got me thinking about how our younger selves can haunt us, if other people won’t let the past lie. Are you writing at the moment? The move to Hove inspired something new; a historical crime story about a servant called Victory, who goes undercover at a well-known girls school on a clifftop to investigate the suspicious death of a teacher. It’s set in 1899 and a light-hearted yomp,

despite the body count! I’m hoping to send Victory undercover in the pre-cinema film industry at St Ann’s Well Gardens next. Why did you decide to move to West Hove? Living close to the sea was a must. Plus, I was spoiled by Singapore, which is culinary heaven, so the food scene was a draw. And, finally, Hove Library is a treasure; you will find me haunting the historical research section! The Last to Know by Jo Furniss is available from Amazon, Waterstones or Bookshop. org (or it can be ordered from independent bookshops) in paperback, e-book or audiobook.

23 Some great photos from the Friends of Hove Park…

When does Winter end? Depends on whether you use astronomical, meteorological (or some other) definitions. Astronomical Spring (which refers to the position of Earth’s orbit in relation to the Sun) starts at the vernal (spring) equinox when day and night are of equal length and varies between 19th and 21st March, whereas Meteorological Spring (a three-month season, based on the annual temperature cycle and coinciding with the calendar) always starts on the first day of March. Whatever the definition, this challenging and chilly winter is drawing to a close and we can look forward to the renewed life of spring with hopefully increased freedom to enjoy it. Before ending, winter provided a freezing blast from Storm Darcy, another ‘Beast from the East’. Unlike elsewhere in the county, there was only a light sprinkling of snow in Hove Park making it easier for walkers but disappointing for the eager sledgers who nevertheless did their best to make use of the mix of mud and snow.

Lastly, in anticipation of a spectacular display of blossom this month here’s a photo from last March.

The snowy children’s playground was being enjoyed but other exercise facilities around the park stood forlorn waiting for their release from restrictions. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Goldstone Farm Goldstone Farm lay to the east of Sackville Road. This photograph shows the old farm cottage, while it was still in occupation by one of the farm workers. It stood at the southern end of what is now Goldstone Lane and was passed by the crowds going to and from the Brighton & Hove Albion ground, which was originally a meadow leased from the farm. The photo was taken not long before the cottage was given up, about 1930.

27 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Hove Park Councillor News This remains a dynamic area so if you have specific questions then please do get in touch and I’ll do my best to provide or seek an answer. The Brighton Centre opened at the end of January as a vaccination hub, providing us with our 36th vaccination centre in Sussex but serving primarily Brighton and Hove.

Hove Park: The playground works tender was completed at the beginning of February and sent out to companies. We should see the works begin once the council processes are completed in return. On request from Cllr Brown and myself, staff from Cityclean and Cityparks undertook reconnaissance walks to determine which locations in the park could accommodate larger bins following persistent complaints and requests. Four locations were identified, including in the park opposite 2 Woodland Drive where a truck could potentially empty/collect rubbish from a larger 1100-litre bin. We will pursue this with officers.

Engaging With Schools On Climate: As an urbanist and your councillor, working in the areas of resilience and climate change, I was invited by the Politics Project to speak to Year 11 pupils at Hove Park School in January. In March, I will be taking part in a council Q&A tackling the climate emergency in Brighton, Hove & Portslade. Details are on Eventbrite so please register. I also took part in a schools climate emergency Q&A in February. This was online with pupils from nine schools in the city, including our own Hove Park, Blatch-

ington Mill and Cardinal Newman. It was a pleasure taking and answering questions from a very engaged younger generation. I took part alongside the city’s MPs, Peter, Caroline and Lloyd.

Zone P Consultation: There were a small number of minor changes requested, extensions of double yellow lines or amendments to parking bays, which officers will be investigating when they are able to conduct site visits again. If you disagree with these officers’ assessments, then please get in touch.

Transport Consultation: Having made temporary changes to our transport network, the Council has another consultation asking for residents’ views on the existing temporary cycle lanes as well as other proposals such as pedestrian and cyclist access only at Weald Avenue/Old Shoreham Road junction to help manage queuing traffic and a protected cycle lane on Nevill Road, between Old Shoreham Road and Nevill Avenue. The consultation closes on 14 March. Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen Samer.Bagaeen@brighton-hove.gov.uk

29 News on the latest census coming up in March…

Everyone will benefit from Census 2021... Households across Brighton and Hove will be asked to take part in Census 2021 this spring.

Census outputs inform where billions of pounds of public funding is spent on services like transport, education and health – on cycle routes, schools and dental surgeries. Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It helps businesses to understand their customers and, for example, decide where to open new shops. Plus, those doing research, like university students and people looking into their family history, use census data. It provides important information on population diversity, allowing organisations to know whether they are meeting their responsibilities and triggering action where necessary. Census 2021 will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “The census provides a unique snapshot of our communities,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at ONS, said. “It benefits everyone. Based on the information you give, it ensures millions of pounds are

GENERAL

The census, run by the Office for National Statistics, is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941. Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone, from central government to organisations such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services. invested in emergency services, mental health care, school places, hospital beds, houses, roads, GP’s and dentist’s services. “No-one should miss out. Everyone can complete online with a new search-asyou-type ability and paper forms for those who need them.” Census day will be on March 21, but households will soon receive letters with online codes explaining how they can take part. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. 31 News from the council…

A project which has been supporting women and children fleeing domestic abuse and violence in Brighton & Hove is now looking for the help of local residents.

Free Q&A for business owners Brighton Chamber will be hosting another ‘Your Questions Answered’ session to support small businesses post Brexit.

The council’s Access Fund for Sustainable Travel team, working in partnership with Cranks, Sustrans and RISE, has been reconnecting women and children with the joy of cycling by supplying bikes and training to those staying in a city refuge. The project has helped to build confidence and empowerment in both the women and children, as well as supporting them to get around the city and reduce travel costs. The council are now looking for people to donate their unwanted bikes so that they can be reserviced and used to continue the project at the refuge. If you could help, please email lucy.dance@sustrans.org.uk. Among those who have been helped by the project: A mother who was given support to help teach her sixyear-old to ride for the first time.

‘De-risking international trade’, a free virtual session, will be held on Monday 15 March from 1-2pm and is open to all business owners in Brighton & Hove. The event is part of ‘From Brighton with Love,’ a package of support designed to help business owners through EU transition and give them the confidence to embark on international trade. The session is designed to highlight some of the risks and look at ways of mitigating or at least understanding the financial exposure for businesses - a ‘pocket checklist’ of all the issues facing a business when trading internationally.

33 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

Laura Bayley... a lifetime of achievement And for one of the revolutionary pioneers in the development of British cinema at the turn of the twentieth century, one who broke all the cinematic boundaries before many of the men of her age, recognition of her prolific career and outstanding achievement is long overdue. By the time Laura Bayley married George Albert Smith in 1888, she had already carved out a successful career as a Victorian actress reputed for her creative talent and comic style. Settling together in Hove, the couple leased the pleasure gardens of St Ann’s Well where, enthused with the embryonic film industry, George built one of the world’s first film studios and converted the pump house into a film development laboratory. Together this dynamic duo experimented with early motion film and today George Smith is recognised as one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation. Meanwhile, Laura herself not only starred in the world’s first movies but was probably the world’s first woman comedian on film. In those early days, everyone mucked in during the filming process and Laura was no exception. Filmmaker in her own right, she worked independently behind the camera and is credited with directing many of her own Biokam (early home camera) films in and around Hove. In 1906, Smith invented the first successful colour film process (Kinemacolor). In addition, he is widely regarded as the inventor of many of the film-editing and special effects which are still used in

Laura Bayley starring in Mary Jane’s Mishap (1903)

modern filmmaking today - superimposition, wipes, dissolves, pulls, reversing, close-ups, double-exposure, dream-time effects, multi-angle and multi-perspective cinematography. Unquestionably, Laura contributed to the development of these experimental techniques and was a significant figure in her own right. So, here’s to Laura Bayley in recognition of her outstanding achievement in advancing the art forms of the moving image. 35 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Breeding birds Like me, you’ve probably been feeling a little better recently. That could be for a few reasons after a troubling winter, but for me it’s because it’s now light after 5pm! And with light comes new life most obvious in the form of singing birds occupying our parks and gardens.

Well, despite living in loose colonies the males defend their nesting hole with gusto and the bigger and blacker the mark on his chest the bolder he is likely to be... But this all relies on personal experience. If you have a personal fondness for the red-listed House Sparrows and their restless romances among the hedgerows as I do, then it may provide the benefits that more tuneful birds offer. But what are they doing in the bushes that causes such a fuss? Well, despite living in loose colonies the males defend their nesting hole with gusto and the bigger and blacker the mark on his chest the bolder he is likely to be, usually the cause for the rustling whether that be fighting or mating, both reaching a climax during spring. House Sparrow pairs are relatively faithful to one another for passerines, but this is

GENERAL

As well as increased day lengths, birdsong floating through your window can have a restorative effect on your mental health but, this very much depends on the species. If you are lucky enough to have a Blackbird, Robin or Dunnock as your neighbour, their light but complex tunes provide greater levels of relaxation than short loud unmelodic bursts. If your eaves are full of House Sparrows, their constant calls may not be quite so healing.

nothing compared to the Tits! Blue and Great Tits are some of the most promiscuous birds in our garden and 40% of nests are likely to have a chick where the male isn’t the genetic parent. The female mates with multiple partners. It’s not clear exactly why, but increasing genetic diversity is one factor that has several benefits. The males may or may not be conscious of this, but their bodies definitely are! If several males are mating with a female, a reproductive arms race commences, so in garden birds with high levels of promiscuity, the males have evolved to grow very large testes relative to their body size as the one that produces the most sperm is more likely to be the parent. So I’ll end this article in an exercise of gratitude: that bird testes are carried internally! glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

37 News from Martlets hospice…

Community asked to ‘March for Martlets’ Martlets are asking people in the community to connect with hospice care and get moving during the month of March with their fundraising activity ‘March for Martlets’.

March for Martlets will be the charity’s first event of 2021 and, due to Covid restrictions, people are encouraged to sign up and pledge to raise sponsorship for their own personal walking, running or marching target. Martlets cares for local people across an area of 34 square miles of Sussex, taking in Brighton and Hove, from Portslade in the west to Newhaven in the east. The charity is hoping people will be inspired by that distance, so whether it’s a 3.4km walk per day, 34 times up and down the stairs every morning or 34 miles in total, everyone can make a difference - sign up at www.martlets.org.uk/take-part Over the past 12 months, Martlets’ charity shops have had to close during lockdown and all fundraising events have been cancelled - while the need for hospice care and support is greater than ever. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Martlets has seen a 25% rise in calls to its phone hub, which offers expert advice and support to patients, families, carers and other professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In many cases, crisis callers were only one call away from ringing 999. Due to the impact of Covid-19 and social distancing measures, many people with a terminal illness are having to cope with

long periods of isolation. They may also have decided not to go to hospital for treatment or visit their GP as often. This means the team at Martlets are working harder than ever to reach and support many more people with complex needs. Signing up to March for Martlets to raise a donation, no matter how large or small, will help Martlets to keep caring. Martlets Chief Executive Imelda Glackin said: “Working through Covid has felt relentless and support from our community at this time would mean so much to everyone as we need to make sure we can keep on doing what we do as we move forward. We really hope that our community will connect with us again and show they care through ‘March for Martlets.” www.martlets.org.uk

39 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

Let’s put a spring in our step Spring is definitely on its way. There’s nowhere better to have a picnic outdoors than in our green and pleasant land, as my friends from hotter climates often point out.

It’s important not to talk of foods in isolation; we celebrate the true gloriousness of them when fused into delectable dishes. And often the right combination brings out each ingredient’s nutritional properties, such as the good fats from the olive oil dressing enable us to absorb the fat-soluble vitamins such as E from leafy salads or the vitamin C from apricots helps us absorb the iron in a lamb tagine. Variety is key; the healthiest guts are those eating 30 different types of fruit and veg over a month. There’s no such thing as superfoods; you don’t need to fork out on exotic varieties to get nutritionally-rich crops. In fact, usually the more locally-grown, the better for you and the planet. Beautiful Easter combos like peas, broad beans and mint are rich in fibre, which help lower cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease as well as being a great source of plant protein. Or there’s spinach containing energy-boosting iron and bone-strengthening magnesium. Griddled fennel is a delightful accompaniment

Mel’s Ironing Service Free Collection & Delivery Call 07861 730098

to pan-seared fish, high in vitamin C and potassium, to accompany the humble new potato which is packed full of vitamin C, too. The much-despised green leafy vegetables are associated with a lower risk of diabetes, and if cooked right, butter if you like, are yummy. Asparagus has a high vitamin E content and folate, the B vitamin that helps fight heart disease. They go rather well with an egg dish. Watercress has been found to have more vitamin C than oranges, more calcium than milk, and more iron than spinach. The soup’s good and easy to make at home, lower in salts and sugar than the shopbought stuff! And I can’t leave without mentioning amazing artichokes which help lower cholesterol which reduces the risk of heart disease. If you’re stuck for what to do with veg, the easy way to start is to simply add them to the meals you already make like stews, pasta sauces and roasts. J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

43 Choose your heart-pounding moment for children’s hospice care…

Adrenaline challenges for Chestnut Tree House We all need a breath of fresh air in 2021, and what better way to get it than to take on an adrenaline-fueled challenge. Jayne and Lydia

Perhaps you’ve always fancied a skydive over Salisbury Plains or even an exhilarating wing walk? These activities are naturally socially-distanced, so if you’re looking for an extra thrill while fundraising for your local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House has you covered:

Jayne braves 320ft abseil

Bungee Jump: Saturday 5 June, Steyne Gardens, Worthing

It was an experience she will never forget and she urges others to take on the challenge too. “This was the first time I had ever done anything like this; I was really out of my comfort zone,” says Jayne. “But I knew that I was doing something for an incredible charity, and that helped me through it.

White Cliffs Abseil: Saturday 3 July, Peacehaven Heights Clifftop Skydives: Saturday 17 April, Sunday 15 August and Sunday 31 October, Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury Wing Walk: Sunday 18 July, Headcorn Aerodrome, Kent

44 A new novel about creating a simpler and kinder society…

“The Line” by Jay Harlow Brighton and Hove resident Jay Harlow has recently published her first novel, ‘The Line’. She tells us more....

Jay Harlow

But can they turn things around, before it is too late?

THE LINE

England, the 2020s The world is falling apart and someone needs to change it for the better. Who has the power to take up the challenge? No-one is above the law. Except one woman. With a sense of humour and a little help from her friends, she is on a mission to draw a line under the past. And to prove that life can be good again. Politics are out, people are in.

WILLOWBRIGHT

Why did you decide to write this book? At the moment, everyone needs cheering up, a few laughs, and a positive view of a possible future. So it’s a very contemporary book about mutual support, encouragement, and creating a simpler and kinder society, where humanity and nature take precedence over technology and big business. I asked myself, “Who could really change everything? Who is above the law?” The answer came to me and the plot followed from there.

Why will The Line appeal to Brighton and Hove residents? It’s about a diverse bunch of caring, imaginative, ordinary citizens, who unexpectedly get the chance to take over running the country. How does that happen? Someone with the power to dismiss the government has become as frustrated by all the current crises as the rest of the nation. And she decides it’s time for control to be handed to the people. Is it a political book? It’s about the issues which are really most

45 important to those who are not politicians. Keeping our jobs, homes and sanity. Protecting our loved ones and the world we live in. It’s a unique storyline with an intriguing plot, plus lots of ideas for ways to address isolation, improve our health and happiness - it just needs the right people to put the plans into action. Why did you choose to self-publish?

GENERAL

It’s the only way for an author to maintain their own vision of the book and its distribution. I’m keen to support smaller, ethical, independent outlets, rather than the major commercial retailers and websites. So please get in touch if you’d like to earn commission for your shop, blog, website, charity, social group....or if you have any other enquiries. Where is The Line currently available? 47 A tribute to a Hove resident who died in January…

Hugh Brammer 1925-2021 Some people are lucky and remain passionately interested in their work throughout their lives. Our friend, Hugh Brammer, who died aged 95 on 13th January, a Covid victim, was one.

Hugh started his career in 1952 in the Colonial Service in Africa before joining the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). In 1961 he was posted to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) to lead the soil survey of the country with local colleagues. During the Liberation War in 1971 he was evacuated, but returned to the newly independent Bangladesh as Senior Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture in 1974. He stayed until he retired from FAO in 1987. Returning to the UK and coming to live in Kingsway Court, Hove, Hugh had a wonderfully fulfilling Third Age. He devoted himself to research and writing 11 books on the agro-ecology, disaster risks and development challenges of Bangladesh. His seminal efforts laid the basis for planning the agricultural development of this small country of great rivers with a population of over 150 million.

49 Simon Baxendale tells us about a computer support charity for which he volunteers…

AbilityNet During the pandemic, Information Technology has never been more important in keeping the more vulnerable folks in our community connected to their family and friends. But what happens when an IT problem crops up?

AbilityNet is a charity offering a totally free service to those most in need of IT support. A team of over 300 skilled volunteer IT specialists, on call, and ready to pick up the phone to talk users through the most trivial of computer tasks, to the highly complex. Backed up by a community of specialists, sponsored by IBM and Microsoft, the team has been taking calls throughout the crisis, keeping people connected, from all backgrounds and abilities. Each volunteer is DBS checked, and in pre-virus days, could offer house visits to help clients with their issues.

Its strapline is “Creating a Digital World Accessible to All” which underpins all the services it offers. For example, here in Hove, (not real names), there was Colin, who needed help installing Zoom so he could resume his remote AA meetings. Or Janet, who couldn’t get her bluetooth keyboard working (new battery was supplied). Or Lorraine, whose donated MacBook was unusable, since she had no passwords, or privileged access. So the MacBook was wiped and a new operating system installed with her own ID. Sometimes the work is trivial, other times it takes hours, but the client is re-connected to their network, and the benefit of this is enormous to those amongst us who are isolating and staying safe.

GENERAL

When the tablet, or laptop they use, starts to malfunction? How do they install Zoom, Skype, restore emails, backup documents, or cope with the scam messages that have escalated lately?

AbilityNet was founded over 20 years ago and has grown into an organisation with total UK coverage. Its strapline is “Creating a Digital World Accessible to All” which underpins all the services it offers. The website has a library of webinars and factsheets about how to adapt technology for the disabled, or adjust workplace environments to make life easier. So if you know of someone elderly or disabled, struggling with IT, why not suggest they get in touch with AbilityNet and see if our volunteers can help? It’s totally free, and it may take just minutes to get something up and running again. Digital exclusion is an unintended consequence of the modern connected world we inhabit, but AbilityNet serves to connect the disadvantaged to the resources that many of us take for granted. www.abilitynet.org.uk

51 Hove news…

Petition to save Hove & Portslade seafront Hove resident Andrea Lewis presented a petition to Full Council on 28th January to save Hove and Portslade seafront.

The petition called for the repair of seafront railings and furniture. It said: “The railings, benches, shelters are eaten away by corrosion and are becoming increasingly dangerous. Bits and pieces are breaking off in front of our eyes, layers upon layers of paint are peeling off. Yes, times are hard, however, how come the Brighton part of the seafront (railings, benches, fences) looks decent and Hove and Portslade are falling apart, literally? Even our beautiful landmark, the Peace Statue is surrounded by corroded fencing and crumbling concrete.”

The ePetition was signed by 1,112 people and a paper version was signed by 396 residents.

She commented that dereliction and neglect attracted antisocial behaviour and crime, but said there was, however, a strong sense of community and residents had been very supportive, offering their time, expertise and painting skills to volunteer when necessary. She had noticed that a few dangerous parts of the seafront had already been made safe, but she asked the council to take immediate action to re-establish safety. The petition has now been referred to the council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee on 11th March for consideration.

New food bank The Cornerstone Community Centre at St John the Baptist’s Church in Church Road, Hove, on the corner of First Avenue, is hosting an open-toall food bank between 2pm and 4pm on Saturdays until the end of March. No referrals are required.

The ePetition was signed by 1,112 people and a paper version was signed by 396 residents.

Anyone wishing to donate food or essential items can drop them in to the centre on Fridays between 9am and 7pm.

Andrea told the council: “Last July I witnessed and managed to stop a little girl from running into a corroded railing along

55 News from the council…

Field officers tackle community concerns Field officers dealt with thousands of cases across the city last year, responding to concerns ranging from noise nuisance to fly-tipping.

bonfires, dust and smoke

illegal street trading

encampments on pavements and in parks

breaches of planning regulations

The Field Officer service was launched in 2018 to take council services out to local communities and tackle issues raised by residents and businesses. Field officers are in action seven days a week until 8pm, providing a fast response to help prevent potential problems escalating. The team work across council services such as planning, environmental health and housing to respond quickly to issues reported by residents through the services’ usual routes. An update on the team’s work was provided in a report to the Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture (TECC) Committee on 14 January. The report says the Covid-19 pandemic has presented challenges, making it difficult for the team to meet residents in person in the same way as they did previously. However, field officers are continuing to work with local people, other council departments and other organisations in the city to get to the root of local concerns and solve problems. Noise triggers the most complaints and prompt action by the team has resulted in 90% of noise investigations being resolved without further complaints. Councillor Steph Powell, joint chair of the TECC Committee, said: “The field officers aim to resolve issues quickly and effec-

tively. With more people at home during lockdown, dealing with noise nuisance and preventing further problems has been particularly important over the last year, and helped to avoid disputes between neighbours. The Covid-19 pandemic means it hasn’t been possible for field officers to get out and about to meet residents at neighbourhood meetings and community events as they did during 2019, but these will be reintroduced as soon as restrictions allow. I’d like to say a heartfelt thanks to all the field officers for all their hard work throughout this most challenging time.” Reporting issues To report a noise problem, visit: brighton-hove.gov.uk/environment/ noise-pollution-and-air-quality/ report-noise-problem Or phone: 01273 294 266 (weekends: 01273 293 541) To report problems such as potholes or fly-tipping, visit: brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/council-and-democracy/ feedback-about-council-services/ report-a-problem

57 Nicole Urbanski sent us this lovely story about her fashion business…

From Hove to Hollywood Just like so many other single mums, COVID-19 threw many challenges my way; from home-schooling to managing work.

In March 2020 I saw my business disappear into thin air. As a bespoke dressmaker/designer I enjoyed meeting my customers face to face, it was vital. Being able to offer choices of samples to touch and try and to be fitted was the unique selling point of my business. Suddenly and within a week, everything I had built over the years was gone and I had to adapt - there was no other option. Without technical knowledge and a strong belief that selling clothes online wouldn’t work for me, I had no choice but to refresh my dormant shop which I had opened years ago on Etsy, but failed to make more than twenty sales in two years. I persevered, made small improvements daily, took advice and realised how just a few changes to my shop could make a difference. Sending out regular newsletters to my customers helped and I was able to inform them of new products and special offers. I adjusted my pricing; working from home had reduced my overheads drastically which allowed me to be more competitive. I was asked to ship the jacket as soon as possible as there would be a fitting with the actress the following Friday. Then, only a few weeks ago, I received an email telling me that the designer loved the jacket and that Priyanka Chopra is wearing it in a film called ’Text for You’, which has just been bought by Netflix and will soon be aired. 63 Advice from professional organiser Nicola Austin, founder of Life of Libra…

Declutter It Our homes are our sanctuary. They are having to work harder than ever, as multi-functional spaces to accommodate living, working, studying, dining and sleeping. We can all find ourselves not getting the best from our homes because we’ve filled them with things that don’t help us achieve the life we want. Our homes can become glorified storage units and spaces we want to escape from, rather than retreat to.

The average person has 3,000 cubic feet of their home filled with items they rarely or never use and we typically wear 20% of the clothes we own 80% of the time. Decluttering for me isn’t about minimalism, perfectly folded clothes or colour coordinated cupboards, and definitely not about having a perfect home (spoiler alert – there’s no such thing). For me, decluttering is about sitting down with a cup of tea without having to move things off the chair beforehand or being able to find and enjoy that treasured item rather than remembering which box in the loft it got stuffed into. It’s about having an easier life with better mental health and wellbeing. The less ‘stuff’ we have in our homes, the less ‘stuff’ we have to tidy up, the less head space is taken up with the ‘stuff’ and the less money we spend on buying and storing the ‘stuff’. Research shows that people who live amidst clutter experience higher stress levels. The biggest motivator among those who want to declutter is improved mental health.

GENERAL

The average person has 3,000 cubic feet of their home filled with items they rarely or never use... People often feel overwhelmed by their clutter. They feel a lack of control in managing it and don’t know where to start, so they don’t. This can lead to feelings of guilt and despair, that then lead back to feeling overwhelmed, resulting in a vicious cycle. Starting is often the hardest part, but by tackling a small decluttering task – a 10-minute drawer declutter – it can give you an instant visual boost and reduce that overwhelming feeling. My number one piece of advice is to start small. This is a lesson I’ve learned the hard way! If you start with one kitchen cupboard, a sock drawer or one bookcase shelf and decide for each item whether you’re going to keep it, recycle it, donate it or throw it away, the small successes soon build up, making larger areas or more complicated clutter, like sentimental items and photographs, easier to tackle. 69 News of a study by Brighton & Sussex Medical School…

Huge increase in skin cancer rates A study published by Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) has found that incidence rates of skin cancer have increased more than 550% in males and 250% in females in England since the early 1980s.

BSMS say that skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with about 16,200 new cases each year. The main environmental risk factor is excessive exposure to UV radiation from the sun. It is estimated that about 86% of all skin cancers in the UK are attributable to excessive exposure to sunlight. The second most important cause of skin cancer is exposure to artificial sources of UV radiation from indoor tanning beds or lamps. Professor Anjum Memon, Chair in Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine at BSMS and lead author of the study, said: “We observed that the steepest increase was in males (more than two-fold that of females) and at old ages. The steeper increase in males is consistent with their relatively greater sun exposure and poor sun-protective behaviour.” Peter Bannister, medical student at BSMS and co-author of the study, said: “The study also showed, for the first time, that the rates of skin cancer in young people (aged 0-34 years) in England have stabilised (or levelled off) during the last two decades. This finding suggests that public health campaigns targeted at children, adolescents and parents may be favourably influencing skin cancer incidence. The stabilisation of incidence in young people is encouraging and emphasises the importance of continued and sustained primary prevention measures to further improve sun-protective behaviours – such as avoidance of excessive exposure to

sunlight and indoor tanning, appropriate clothing and application of sunscreens.” The study also shows that the site of skin cancer is most likely associated with the pattern of UV radiation exposure. Rates of skin cancer of the trunk have increased 817% in males and 613% in females since the 1980s, and skin cancer of the arms has increased by 750% in males and 518% in females. This is most likely attributable to lifestyle and societal changes such as sunbathing, holidays abroad and the use of sunbeds. The full study is published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe and can be read at thelancet.com/journals. “Where in Hove?” answers from page 59.
