4 Meet a local resident who has started his own cycle repair business…

Hove Park person… Matt Bentham Matt Bentham lives in Dyke Road. His job was moved to China during lockdown, so consequently he has started a cycle repair business, Devils Bykes, from his workshop. What was your job before lockdown? Before lockdown my job was a technology leader for a large global bank. I managed the data analytics technology department, with a team of about 200 people. Why did you decide to set up your own business? Lifestyle was the biggest reason; I’ve spent 21 years going up and down to London.

During that time I spent lots of time out of the country, working for global banks and having global teams. So the opportunity to work and live in Brighton had a strong pull, and opening my own business seemed a good way of doing that. Tell us more about Devils Bykes… For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in bikes. As a child I would take a sandwich and disappear for the day on my bike, only to surface again at tea time.

My passion is my mountain bike, having had a few on and off for 25 years. I’ve always maintained my bikes and I really enjoy fixing things. If there are new problems I like the challenge of finding solutions. Applying that knowledge to repairing other people’s bikes seemed like a good way to make a pastime into a business. How is it going so far? It’s going really well. We thought it would be slow to begin with, but Coronavirus and lockdown have driven people back onto their bikes. This has accelerated the start-up of the business, and we seem to be getting many new bikes every day; the only problem is that spare parts are sometimes scarce. What do you do to relax? Obviously I do like to go out on my bike, that is something I need to make more time for. Practical stuff is something that I enjoy, whether that involves fixing things, mending random objects or decorating our house. Cooking is fun, and that definitely helps me to relax. My other great love is music and another bonus of working from home is spending the day listening to Radio 6. At last I can keep up with the music scene. For more information, visit devilsbykes.com, email Matt at matt@devilsbykes.com or phone 07775 582898.

Trimming the Copse For three weeks in May, Three Cornered Copse echoed to the sound of chainsaws and wood chippers, as the council’s contractors went to work on the larger inhabitants of our woodland. Their focus was to take away the branches that threatened to fall across the paths and into the areas that people might be. Some of the trees are quite old and had some evidence of rot in the trunk. So they were reduced to a monolith. This provides habitats for insects and small invertebrates over the years to come, and lasts much longer than a trunk on the forest floor. There were a few concerns about doing this at the time when birds are nesting, and some of our members spoke to the contractors, who reassured us that they did a survey of the trees they were working on to ensure no nests were threatened. Arboriculturalists tend to be part ecologists and sympathetic to the fauna of a woodland; it was good to hear them recognising our concerns. Much of the work was “taking the weight” off some of the older beech trees, to keep them living but also safe from dropping on to populated areas.

a dozen bags were filled with the debris of picnics, drinking parties and coffee meetings.

Recently, the bottom lane to Goldstone Crescent has been churned up by contractors accessing building works in the garden of one of the houses. As a bridleway, this is prohibited to motor traffic, but despite this, the damage to the lane proceeded unchallenged. 10 Meet local artist, Kate Scott...

Hove Park Artist...Kate Scott Kate Scott is a contemporary artist living locally, very near Hove Recreation Ground. Having worked for many years part time as a counsellor in a women’s health organisation, she is currently focused on painting.

Kate was born in Brighton and then studied Fine Art Painting BA in London and an MA in printmaking in Brighton. She worked from various studios in London after graduating, but now has a studio at home in Hove. Kate is very inspired by nature and the environment; she experiences the physical act of painting like a conversation in which, using mark making and layers of colour, she taps into the silent voice that cannot be communicated any other way. She seeks to explore and crystallize the intangible sense of a particular place, and how it feels to be there, emotionally and physically. Kate’s work was recently hired by a production company to be featured in the first episode of ITV crime drama ‘Grace’, screened in March this year. The drama, based on the books by Brighton author Peter James, was filmed on location in iconic settings in Brighton. Several of her paintings were seen on the walls of a key character’s flat, and some will be exhibited this year as part of Artist’s Open Houses which will take place a month later than normal due to Covid-19.

The other artists are Gary Goodman, Kate Strachan, Ingrid Boucher, Milena Deparis, Nick Gardner and Jo Delafons. 1 Rigden Road, Hove, BN3 6NP will be VENUE 12 of the 7 Dials art trail in the Artists Open Houses brochure. The dates are Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th June – 11am – 6pm. It will be operating under Covid guidelines and a side gate can be used to enter the house where limited numbers will be kept to during the weekend. The exhibition will stay up for the following week, to be viewed by appointment. Contact Kate (info@katescottpaintings.com) for more information, or to be added to the mailing list for invitations. Kate’s work is in private collections in the UK and abroad, and she has exhibited in solo and group shows, and she is also a guest artist in Jane Palmer & Friends Open House in Fiveways Brighton, every weekend of June. info@katescottpaintings.com 07719 337676

Plans for Flexer Sacks factory site rejected... Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 5th May, have rejected plans for a development on Wellington Road and Camden Street, Portslade, and the former Flexer Sacks factory site on North Street. The site is in the South Portslade industrial area to the west of Boundary Road. Luna Group, whose directors include former Brighton & Hove Albion footballer Bobby Zamora and West Ham’s Mark Noble, proposed buildings of up to 11 storeys, with office and leisure space on the ground floor. The development would be built in three phases, with 65 flats built in Phase 1, up to 55 in Phase 2 and up to 16 in Phase 3. Phase 1 would provide only three parking spaces, but 38 parking spaces were planned for Phases 2 and 3. A planning officer’s report recommended approval, saying the scheme would make a significant contribution to the city’s housing shortfall. The council received 29 objections. Simon Page of St Andrew’s Road spoke at the Planning Committee on behalf of local residents. He complained that there had been insufficient public consultation and objected to the “abnormal height proposals”, saying the development would cause a parking overspill of at least 100 cars in an area where the ongoing parking problem had not been addressed. Ward councillor Les Hamilton accepted that the site was suitable for development, but thought this was too high. “If we halve the number of units and double the amount of parking, that would be possibly an acceptable option,” he said. David Williams, speaking for the developers, said that the scheme would deliver 136 homes, all in high-quality design buildings, without any impact on any residential properties in the vicinity.

In the committee debate, Cllr Joe Miller commented that the scheme would be a vast improvement on what’s there, which is unsightly: “It’s always been my view that, constrained by the sea and the Downs, there’s only one place we’re going to house people and that’s if we go up.” However, Cllr Carol Theobald said the development was “a ridiculous height” and Cllr Bridget Fishleigh said: “I think it looks really really horrible and they should go back to the drawing board.” The application was refused by 7 votes to 2 due to the poor quality of consultation with residents; the lack of parking spaces; the lack of three-bedroom-plus units; and the unacceptable visual impact. Committee chair Leo Littman said the committee would be very keen on the applicants coming back with an alternative that they might be able to support.

A new wholefoods store, Love Wholefoods, opened in May on Kingsway, near Hove Lagoon. Manager Alex Callahan tells us more… Why did you decide to open a wholefoods store on Kingsway? We identified the site as having a lot of potential - it is easy to park on Kingsway, there is a lot of footfall past the front of the shop and there aren’t many places in the local area selling quality food and drinks. The location will really come into itself in the summer as it is a convenient place to stock up on tasty treats to take to the beach. What do you sell? Our vision was to create a friendly, welcoming environment stocking an interesting range of high quality products. Wherever possible we are selling locally produced goods, supporting small businesses in and around Brighton & Hove and the wider area. We have a good range of gluten-free products, cater well for vegans, and have lots of healthy and organic everyday products. We also have fresh bread, seasonal locally-grown produce and a selection of wine (including some fabulous Sussex sparkling and still wines from the likes of Rathfinny and Stopham Estate), craft beers and ciders. What is your most popular product? It’s very early days so far (I’m writing this at the end of our second day of trading) but our fresh bread is proving to be very popular as well as our curated selection of wine and local beers. Sussex cheeses, antipasti and our eclectic coffee selection are also selling well.

How is it going so far? We have been welcomed with open arms by local residents and all the feedback has been very positive so far. We have lots of exciting plans that we will be putting into practice over the coming weeks including regular wine tastings, new product launches and special promotions. We hear you have also taken over the shop next door (339 Kingsway). What plans do you have for that? We are currently working through ideas for number 339 but it will most likely be a stylish homewares and gift shop and possibly a boutique garden centre in the large space we have out the back. Whatever it ends up being will look beautiful and will be a positive addition to the local area. Love Wholefoods is at 337 Kingsway, between Derek Avenue and Brittany Road. J.H. Volunteers at Wish Park are working with the artist Becca Angel on a second mural on the electricity substation, following the success of the first mural, painted in 2020. This year’s mural will be entitled “Who’s hanging out in Wish Park?” and will also feature the planting of shrubs, herbs and grasses alongside the mural. A kids art workshop is due to be held in the park on 29 May as part of the project, and some of this work will be incorporated in the final design. The workshop will include a “find the elephant” competition, which is a parkwide search for the names of sporty elephants. A social media campaign has been launched to fund the second mural. Local businesses have been terrific in supporting the project but at the time of writing there is still about £4,000 to raise. Becca and her team of artists are looking to start the mural on 28th June, with a celebratory launch picnic at the end of July.

20 Councillor Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward, on safety in Portland Road…

Wish Ward Councillor News After a succession of different campaigns to improve safety on Portland Road, and one particularly upsetting incident, our battle for improvements continues with a petition calling for a 20mph speed limit. We need your support if we are going to win this one. Safety on Portland Road has become a major concern in recent years. With more people using it, and of course, schools, nurseries, shops, takeaways and several large building sites nearby, Portland Road has become quite the worry.

Safety on Portland Road has become a major concern in recent years. With more people using it, and of course, schools, nurseries, shops, takeaways and several large building sites nearby... With the support of the community, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I were able to secure Hove’s first ever pavement parking ban outside Wish Park Surgery by School Road. The cars are now gone and trees are in place. It was a no-brainer but something of a bureaucratic nightmare to pull off. To tackle pollution around the schools – and to increase biodiversity and visual amenity – we worked on a project with parents (special mention to Deborah Griffiths in particular) to plant a hedge all of the way across the front of Hove Juniors. It’s now in place and looks fantastic. Related to this, we have worked closely with the schools to call on the Council to introduce build-outs to corners along the length of Portland Road to help kids walk to school. A thorough scheme has been drawn up but has sadly been delayed so that Valley Gardens can be finished (this would not be our priority of course). It is

very much still happening though and is mentioned in the petition. Speed is ultimately a factor in all of this and a 20mph limit now feels essential. Going faster than 20mph just feels totally inappropriate in some of the busiest sections of the street. We are under no illusion that the limit will be broken in the clearer sections of the street (the western end particularly), and that most drive slowly in the busiest sections already. Nonetheless, concerns over safety must be taken seriously and addressed. I’m sure that we can all agree that Portland Road now feels much more dangerous than Kingsway, New Church Road and Old Shoreham Road (the three other 30mph roads in our part of Hove). We’d hugely appreciate support and hope to submit to the Council as soon as possible. A link to the petition is as follows: https://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=764 Cllr Robert Nemeth robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

We are preparing in earnest for the Stoneham Park summer fair, which will be held on Saturday 17 July. Our theme for the event is “Happy Days are Here Again”, a song first used to celebrate the end of Prohibition in 1933, which aptly sums up how we all will be feeling once the last of the Covid restrictions are lifted. Fingers crossed!

We are still on the look-out for helpers for the day, as well as musicians, dancers, and entertainers. Please do get in touch with us by email if you would like to participate. If all goes according to plan, it will be a fabulous day out and a real celebration of a return to better times. After a six-month hiatus, we have now been given permission to hold the outdoor cinemas, as mentioned in previous issues, and we are also pleased to announce that The Snug café is due to reopen this month, six days a week. Stoneham Park has been very lucky to have our two favourite mural artists return to paint four fantastic aquatic murals on the back wall of the park. We asked for an underwater

scene, and look what we got! A fearsome shark, two playful dolphins, a sunken galleon, and cuddly red octopus! If you haven’t been to see them yet, be sure also to take a look at Harry Potter and Hogwarts on the kick wall. Once again, we extend our gratitude to Fek and Mazcan, two local talents of whom we can all be proud. On 7 June, we will be having our quarterly meeting to which all local residents are invited. It will probably be over Zoom, so please get in touch if you would like to come. Finally, Wednesday 16 June is Sussex Day so keep an eye on our flagpole that day! 31 This article is by Anja Ashton of Language Garden…

Five essentials to raising a bilingual child If you’ve thought about raising your child bilingually, but find the prospect daunting, or have previously tried and given up, then this article is for you. No matter what age your child, by following these five steps, you should be able to give them the wonderful gift of a second language. 1. Define your goals

GENERAL

Ask yourself what you want for your child. Would you like them to simply understand the second language, or be able to speak it, or read and write it, or ultimately to achieve a qualification that will allow them to work in the country of the second language? 2. Create an action plan With a bit of research, you can usually find a good range of resources. Every major language has a wide spectrum of learning materials from books and DVDs to educational software and apps. Once you’ve done your research, plan a weekly schedule with daily manageable activities. A Zoom call with relatives can be as valuable as more formal learning. 3. Maximise human exposure There’s no substitute for interacting with people who speak the second language. Indeed, without such interaction children don’t reach the comfort level that enables them to willingly use the language. 4. Activity based learning is king

5. Build a bilingual community When your child enters an English-speaking school, it is inevitable that English will become their stronger language, even if they continues to speak the second language at home. However, she can still progress in the second language if you continue to speak it to them. It will also make it much easier for them to learn new languages. Being a German mum in Brighton, it was very important to me that my children grew up bilingual. Back in 2014 I set up a small German kindergarten from our family home in Kemptown to create a community of families and children. Seven years on, we run a thriving pre-school setting at Falmer’s beautiful village hall. The children learn the language through creative play and adventures out in nature.

Children learn by doing, so any activity that uses their senses will enhance their learning. Using gestures helps them to learn the meanings of new words. So, for example, if you’re making pancakes, invite your child to get out the milk from the For more information contact Anja Ashton fridge, pour it in the bowl, count the eggs, on 07930 494822 or email mix in the flour and smell the vanilla sugar. info@language-garden.co.uk. 33 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

This photograph (ref AMS/7028/356/4) appeared on the front page of the Brighton Herald on 3 May that year, so it may have been an important event. Perhaps it was the first time that bowls had started again since the end of the war in 1945. It’s tempting to think so, as his audience looks very happy! Hove was – and still is – home to several bowls clubs. The dress code for players, depending on the event, is ‘whites’ (all white clothing), ‘greys’ (grey trousers or skirt and white tops) or ‘casual’. And while the bowls may look the same to the uninitiated, they vary in weight, from a lady’s ‘00’ which can be held in one hand, to a ‘7’ which most people can’t lift. There’s forehand, a straightforward cast from the right hand, and backhand, a throw from the same hand but from a starting position curved into the body. Passing by the greens (rinks) as play is in progress, it’s easy to underestimate the skills required. Although the idea is straightforward - get the bowl as close as possible to the jack (a small white ball)

which is rolled onto the rink first – it’s not easy, as each bowl is shaved on one side so it rolls on a bias. Players work to combine the pace of the bowl, which comes from the rink’s surface, with the line (direction) which comes from the bias. The weather adds complications. As veteran bowls player and Hove resident Nick Laver says, ‘The rink in the picture – at the Hove and Kingsway Bowls Club on Hove seafront – is a devil! The wind just swings your woods around!’ In recent years fewer people have been playing bowls and the local council has stopped maintaining the public rinks. One set is still maintained on Hove seafront but the other two there, as well as several in local parks, have been left to run to seed. Poignant reminders of a popular sport which has, perhaps, run its course, they will soon be unrecognisable. Without the diligent attention of groundsmen and their tools and chemicals it only takes weeks for weeds and holes to undo the work of years. www.thekeep.info

34 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at wildflowers in Hove…

Pavement Plants Now is the best time of year to go searching for wildflowers in Hove, and luckily for us and our crazy paving there are plenty of opportunities for them to grow and green our pavements, brick walls and cracked roads.

The Dandelion is ubiquitous. It can grow almost anywhere and is abundant in Hove on the Lawns, Hove Park and everywhere between. But the copiousness of this plant shouldn’t undermine its importance to wildlife. The Dandelion is one of the first plants to open and therefore is one of the most sought after plants by our spring bees, like this Tawny Mining Bee, as they provide essential nectar and pollen sources for them to feed and store in their nests for when their young hatch. Dandelions, named for the ‘lion’s tooth’-like leaves, are actually worth taking a closer look at. There are 250 species of Dandelion in the UK and each has slight variations in their flowers and leaves, some of which can be very rare, even the ones we walk past on the street daily. Another common sight is Shepherd’s Purse with its little white flowers and triangular seed heads, the shape of which give this plant its name. This is an interesting species for its journey from natural habitats to manmade urban areas. This is probably the most common flower in our pavements, yet you don’t see it as commonly in the wild, and even then it’s mostly along tracks and footpaths. Its main preference is for disturbed soil, so

before humans paved the towns, it would have been seen primarily in ploughed fields, before pesticides reduced its ability to survive. But this plant has been around before farming came along, so before then this plant was probably heavily linked to disturbance caused by wild grazing animals like Boar and Bison, even in Britain. Finally, one of the most delicate plants on our pavements and one for early risers is Scarlet Pimpernel. The flowers only open in sunlight and even then often close by early afternoon. The one in the photograph is actually in my garden, sprawling out from a bed in a typically untidy way, but the stunning little red flowers make up for it and are often visited by ants in the summer. These incidental plants provide fantastic resources for our urban wildlife, so take a closer look, and you might be pleasantly surprised by their appearance. glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

39 Community Champion Kay Sexton tells us about initiatives at the Weald Allotments…

The Weald Community Fridge Local writer Kay Sexton was chosen as a Community Champion earlier this year by Brighton and Hove Buses for devoting her free time to local initiatives at Weald Allotments in Hove, including the Weald Allotments Community Fridge.

We’re based on an allotment site so it seemed natural to share any over-abundance of fruit and vegetables with others. But we had no idea that we were going to be facing a pandemic that turned us into a frontline food provider in our first week! How does it work? We receive surplus food from supermarkets, combine it with fresh organic produce from our allotment-holders and distribute it to the local community on Thursdays and Sundays between 10:00-12:00. Anybody can come and collect a bag of food, no questions, no hassle, no waste!

resources to cook a hot meal or to heat their home. We hope that Soup Sunday will both offer a chance to eat a nourishing meal in pleasant company and - if necessary - share a cheap, simple and delicious recipe that they can later make at home.

Is there still a high demand?

Do you have a lot of volunteers?

Yes. Every week we have new people visit the fridge. Food insecurity is a hidden problem across our city, and many who look prosperous or secure may still be facing difficulties. Furlough and layoffs have made it tough for a lot of people at present. That’s part of our Soup Sunday strategy …

We do: fridge heroes, foragers and soup dragons! Until May 2021 we also had delivery drivers taking food to those most in need across the city, but today, as restrictions ease, we’re stopping deliveries to focus on building food resilience in our local community. Then there’s the countless anonymous voluntewers on the Weald Allotment site who donate amazing fresh fruit, veg and herbs every week, because without them we’d lose the backbone of our fridge’s supplies. And we’re always looking for more volunteers to join us.

Tell us more about your Soup Sundays… So Soup Sunday has three objectives. 1 - to bring together our allotment community once a month in the winter 2 - to offer a bowl of free, vegetarian soup to our wider local community 3 - to share an easy-to-cook recipe that may help people who are in ‘heat or eat’ - the form of food insecurity that is most common in winter when many individuals find themselves torn between using their

43 News from the council…

Good news...more loos! Brighton & Hove City Council have installed 24 new toilets on the seafront. The portable loos are located at six sites with high footfall along the seafront, with the aim of easing queueing outside existing toilets. They are open 24/7, with the existing toilets closing as normal at 8pm. Each site has four individual Portaloo cubicles, with two sites in Brighton and four in Hove, where demand for public loos has grown significantly in the last year. There are also separate urinal blocks at four of the sites. The locations, and nearest permanent toilets, are: Hove •

Opposite Brunswick Square on Hove Lawns. Four loos plus one separate urinal. Nearest, King’s Esplanade 460m.

Opposite Adelaide Crescent on Hove Lawns. Four loos only. Nearest, King’s Esplanade 175m.

Opposite Grand Avenue on Hove Lawns. Four loos only. Nearest, King’s Esplanade 180m.

Hove Street South near Hove Seafront Office. Four loos plus one separate urinal. Nearest, King Alfred 200m.

Brighton •

Opposite the Artist’s Quarter near the carousel. Four loos plus one separate urinal. Distance to nearest permanent loo is Shelter Hall or Dalton’s Bastion 400m. Next to the basketball court. Four loos plus one separate urinal. Nearest, Shelter Hall 200m.

Twenty public toilet sites in total The six new temporary sites have added to the 14 existing permanent loos, meaning there are 20 public toilet sites in total along the seafront. This includes the new toilets at Shelter Hall which opened in April. There are also dozens of loos in the pubs, cafés and restaurants along the beach. The temporary sites will be in place until the beginning of September. They will be cleaned three times a day at the weekends, bank holidays and school holidays, and twice on weekdays. The council aim to stock up all the toilets as much as possible with loo paper and soap. However, they cannot predict the amount individual people will use or, unfortunately, guarantee against theft. They therefore encourage people to carry their own supplies where possible…just in case.

The club is looking forward to re-opening its members bar and kitchen when the next stage in the COVID roadblock is reached. After a challenging game or three there’s nothing finer than a cold pint, sitting in the sun, admiring the view across those 11 perfect lawns. Come and see for yourself!

49 There’s a Comedy Festival this month at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

June at B.O.A.T. (Brighton Open Air Theatre)

For children, there’s a production of David Walliams’ best-seller “Mr Stink”; and a brand new musical adaptation of “The Further Adventures of Doctor Dolittle” by Illyria, which features a fully orchestrated score, amazing puppets and a plethora of songs that you’ll be singing along to for years to come. “The Ugly Duckling” is a lovely new ballet for the whole family. With crystal-clear story-telling, larger than life characters and gorgeous costumes, it tackles themes of social acceptance and liking yourself in a child-friendly, charming manner.

errors by Nikolai Gogol, performed by Year 12 students from Newman Drama Academy; and a humorous adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” by The Pantaloons. “The Bench” is a hilarious tale of an epic conflict over a public bench; and “Estella” is a ground-breaking, imaginative and vibrant adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, led by a band of three actor musicians. “Lord God” is a new musical comedy by Philip Reeve and Brian Mitchell, whose previous collaborations include “Pugs of the Frozen North” and “The Ministry of Biscuits”. Building on their reputation for thought-provoking comedy, Lord God takes a timely look at morality, faith, and why sometimes it is best not to take things too seriously. To celebrate the Summer Solstice, Brighton’s own maverick guitarist, composer and ukulele virtuoso Richard Durrant will be returning with his trademark blend of original music, British-flavoured folk, JS Bach and plenty of tales from the road, in his first appearance in front of a live crowd this year. 57 The Warren is back in Victoria Gardens as part of Brighton Fringe…

The Warren returns It has been a tough 12 months, but good times are on their way – starting with the return of Brighton’s favourite festival hangout: The Warren.

Highlights include alternative comedy stalwart Arthur Smith; the return of Ethiopia’s dazzling Circus Abyssinia, the live adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s beloved children’s book The Snail and The Whale, plus after-hours comedy club The Late Show, which will be playing host to comic powerhouses such as Reginald D Hunter, Zoe Lyons and Paul Sinha. It will mark a triumphant return for live entertainment after a year in which venues were forced to pull their programmes as the Government imposed a nationwide lockdown because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst The Warren was unable to go ahead, production company Otherplace quickly responded to the challenges of the crisis and by July had opened The Warren Outdoors, a new, socially distanced venue on Brighton beach. Offering a platform for performers who had seen their tours and festivals cancelled, acts including Jimmy Carr, Sara Pascoe and Russell Kane brought much-needed laughs to an anxious public. The same sense of innovation drives this year’s edition of The Warren at Victoria Gardens. Otherplace has mothballed its existing indoor venues and instead built two new spaces that offer the thrill of live entertainment within a Covid-secure en-

vironment. The McElderry is an open-air amphitheatre built out of shipping containers and named in memory of Adam McElderry, a friend of The Warren, who worked backstage in theatre before he passed away in 2015. The smaller venue, The Oil Shed, is constructed from chequered, repurposed oil drums allowing free-flowing ventilation around the theatre. Audiences in both theatres are seated with their own group at a safe distance from others in the auditorium. The Warren at Victoria Gardens runs until July 11, when both theatres will move down to the seafront for The Warren on The Beach, located on Madeira Drive just east of Brighton Palace Pier. An additional programme of comedy, theatre and family shows will then be on offer until 30 August. Find more information at warrenfestival.co.uk.

61 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

Positive people live longer! New research into ageing from Oregon State University shows that people with a positive outlook about ageing live an average of eight years longer than those with negative views.

One of the researchers further pointed out that our thoughts about ageing are very predictive of how we’re going to age. She advanced that even common comments such as ‘another senior moment’ could negatively impact your health and longevity, and concluded that the mind (words) and body are very closely interwoven. This comes as no surprise to me, working with patients with gut conditions that can be directly linked to their state of mind. I have noticed over the past 12 years in this field, that the more negative the person, the more anxious and the deeper their gut problems will be. So how can you improve your state of mind and positivity? Here are some great tips to help switch that niggling negative inner voice off. 1.

2.

3.

Don’t watch the news. Filled with negative and fear-inducing messages, a sure way to nip any positive thoughts in the bud, especially first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Watch your words: replace ‘but’ with ‘and’. Try it. You may find that your train of thoughts takes you down some unexplored inner wisdom. Snap a band: wear an elastic band around your wrist and snap it whenever negative thoughts and words come up. Replace these immediately with a positive or grateful thought.

Don’t watch the news

4.

Practise gratitude and self-praise. Three of each. Say them out-loud and write them down every night or morning.

5.

Meditate: to reset to a calmer, peaceful mind, rebalance your emotions and change your perspective of thought. Five minutes of closing your eyes and focusing on deep breathing will do just fine.

6. Acknowledge more: become great at acknowledging goodness and good actions in others and yourself. Negative thinking (and speaking) is a habit. All habits can be broken, if you choose to do so. These tips will work wonders right now, not just in your old age. Nathalie Sansonetti Nutritional Therapist & Health Coach Do you want support and accountability with your health? 63 YMCA DownsLink Group want to raise awareness of child criminal exploitation in the city…

WiSE up to criminal exploitation

This activity, known as Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE), has increased markedly over the last two years and Brighton is the top target of county lines dealers according to a new report from London City Hall, with vulnerable children as young as 10 being targeted. A new campaign, WiSE Up To Exploitation, is being launched by YMCA DownsLink Group, via its dedicated project leading on both child sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation, YMCA WiSE, to raise awareness of the issue. The new social media campaign, WiSE Up to Exploitation, has been devised by YMCA WiSE alongside a group of Brighton University student volunteers. It aims to raise awareness of child criminal exploitation and its links to drugs in Brighton and Hove. The campaign hopes to start conversations about recreational drug use in Brighton and Hove and the impact on children and young people who are exploited. Project worker Magdalene Mill explains: “Child criminal exploitation is a type of abuse where children are targeted, often through social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram; they are then

groomed and coerced into committing criminal acts. On the surface it may appear that children who are criminally exploited have made a freely given choice; however, among other tactics, intimidation, violence, sexual violence, debt bondage and weapons have been used to manipulate them to commit crimes.” Hove MP Peter Kyle, who until recently was also Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice, is backing the campaign. He says: “Consuming illicit drugs isn’t a pain-free choice. When someone orders their fix, they set off a chain of processes with exploitation at its heart. Young people are coerced to travel long distances, putting themselves in mortal danger and held in modern slavery to exploitative drug gangs. These gangs hold vulnerable young people in debt bondage, often threatening to injure or kill loved ones unless the victims do as they say.”__ To find out what you can do to help or how to spot the signs that someone you know may be being exploited, visit ymcadlg.org/wise-up-to-exploitation and follow @ymcawise on all social media platforms.

Have you ever thought about how drugs arrive in and move around our city? Did you know that children are used by organised crime groups to transport, store and distribute drugs and the profits of drugs, within Brighton and Hove, and across the country?

65 A Hove musician who specialises in working with young children…

Meet Simon Baker of LongTallSilly Simon Baker is a musician, singer-songwriter and children’s entertainer, who runs LongTallSilly children’s music parties. How did you become a children’s entertainer?

Tell us about your children’s parties… LongTallSilly music parties revolve around the original action songs and music I’ve recorded and produced. There are also musical games. Typically it involves the children doing stuff with instruments and props so it’s quite physical too. I use the recorded material through a PA and add in a lot of live singing, guitar, percussion and ukulele playing throughout the hour. Often I’ll adapt from my stock of games and songs according to what’s going to best suit those particular children on that day and I’ll usually try to get a few parents involved with some of the games. The kids seem to love that, especially if it’s a bit daft. What is the most memorable party you’ve done? Probably when a painfully shy little boy whose 3rd birthday party I’d just done came up to me as I was packing up, took a deep breath and said with the utmost sincerity, “That was the most fun I’ve ever had.” But there’s always moments of magic. On one occasion I was able to write a song especially for a little girl turn-

GENERAL

I am more of a singer/songwriter who’s specialised for 10 years in working with and writing for very young people and families, though it’s got to be fun so there’s always an element of entertainment involved. I was asked to do parties originally as an offshoot of the music sessions I was running in various early years settings. I try to make what I do more of an interactive experience for the kids than ‘a show’ per se. ing 5, since I knew the family personally as friends, that was kind of special. Tell us about your music… The songs are fairly story-based and often contain a secondary layer of humour aimed more at parents. I play and record everything myself, mixing electronica with live vocals and instruments. It’s quite a crazy eclectic mix of influences, but if there were a ‘genre leaning’ it’s probably towards the indie. One of my primary goals was to create rich and interesting musical content for children that wasn’t patronising or bland. How has lockdown been for you? Lonely, flat and two-dimensional! My real concern now is about finding the way forward for LongTallSilly music parties. It would be great to be able to finish the 4th album too. LongTallSilly children’s parties are available again from 21st June.

Sussex PCC Election Result... Katy Bourne has been re-elected as Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner, following an election on 6 May. Katy was elected with a total of 244,810 votes after a twostage count across East Sussex, West Sussex and Brighton & Hove. The runner-up was Paul Richards, who received a total of 128,259 first and second preference votes.

As no candidate had more than 50% of the votes cast, the two leading candidates went through to a second stage of the count when any second preference votes they have received on the other candidates’ ballot papers were added to their first preference vote total. Corn Exchange restoration

Brighton 7s Festival

One of Brighton & Hove’s most historic buildings has reached a major restoration milestone. Throughout the lockdown period, work has continued on an ambitious project to refurbish Brighton Dome’s Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.

righton Rugby Club is B hoping to host a new 10,000 capacity event in Waterhall Road from 11-13 June.

Scaffolding has now been removed from the Corn Exchange facade on Church Street and along the front of the Studio Theatre on New Road, giving a first glimpse of the exterior renovation work, which has included restoring the stonework and replacing the roof with 16,000 Welsh slate tiles.

Competitive rugby 7s will collide with the most creative music from the city and beyond, alongside a conference for rugby enthusiasts, providing three days of entertainment. There will be men’s and women’s competitions, as well as an all-ability mixed-gender touch rugby tournament. The best independent and innovative musical artists will be showcased on two stages across the three days.

Inside the building, work continues, with many of the original interior heritage features being restored. They include 6,500 linear metres of oak cladding installed along the length of the Corn Exchange walls and roof arches, and 34 oak pilaster columns recreated from archive drawings to match how the building would have looked over 200 years ago. Work also continues on further internal improvements including: •

major improvements to the Studio Theatre

creation of a magnificent new Corn Exchange viewing gallery and audience circulation space

new seating

new lifts and a dry air-cooling system.

79 Meet an award-winning local film maker who lives near the Hove Park area…

Local documentary maker… Phil Grabsky Phil Grabsky is a multi award-winning Brighton-based documentary maker. One film released recently to DVD is about painter Frida Kahlo. How did you start?

Why a film about Frida Kahlo? Frida was made for our cinema series Exhibition On Screen. We release five films a year to cinemas around the world. When we started EOS, it was always our intention to look as broadly as we could in terms of chronology, geography and gender.

us, inform us, and excite us. Picking any particular favourite is difficult. That said Monet, Raphael, Van Gogh and Cézanne would be in my top 10.

Frida Kahlo is arguably the world’s favourite female artist. And her face is very well known. But her biography and life much less so. When you think about it, she is a Mexican, disabled, transgressive artist that overcame all sorts of hurdles to become not only an extraordinary artist but also an extraordinary woman. It is a gripping story – and her art warrants our attention.

We are just now releasing a film about Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. The next film, due in September, is a super film about Raphael. In all our art films, we encourage the audience to not be afraid of art. Art surrounds us and there are no stupid questions. Just be inquisitive. It’s easy to glance and move away but actually the more you look the more you see.

Tell us about some of your other films…

Have a look at Phil’s films at www.seventh-art.com

Other films include Making War Horse, In Search of Mozart, In Search of Beethoven, history films with Terry Jones, and many more. Right now we are about to complete a twenty year project about a young boy called Mir growing up in Afghanistan. It is called My Childhood, My Country - 20 Years in Afghanistan and, I must say, it is really quite something. Who are your favourite artists? The reason that these artists are considered great is that, even after hundreds of years, they still have the power to move

81 One of the many shows coming to Brighton Fringe…

Twin magicians return home to Brighton Twin brother magic act Kane & Abel will provide an opportunity for people to enjoy live entertainment while making a return to their former hometown of Brighton. The magicians will be performing as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival at The Warren on Friday 4th June at 8.15pm and Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June at 1.15pm.

The show will mark a welcome return to his former hometown for Kane. He said: “When we first performed at the Brighton Fringe in 2018 I decided I didn’t want to leave. So I didn’t. I moved to Brighton and was in love with living in the city. When the pandemic happened, I was forced to move back to live with my parents in Shropshire. It’ll be great to be back in Brighton for these shows and hopefully, I’ll be able to also start the process of moving back. I’ve missed the thriving live entertainment scene, pubs, cafés, coffee shops, beach and the general vibe.” Abel said: “We have been fortunate enough to perform all over the world, from Adelaide to Rhodes, but there’s something about the Brighton audiences that you don’t get anywhere else. They

In “Split Egg: A Magic Show About Being Twins”, Kane & Abel perform magic and comedy inspired by clichés surrounding twins. Every question the identical twin brothers have been asked, whether they are harmless, hurtful or just hilarious, has been developed into the narrative of this fun-filled show. They prove they know what each other is thinking and feeling and whether they’ve ever used their similarities to steal each other’s girlfriends.

are without doubt the most supportive and enthusiastic people. We can’t wait to be back in Brighton and experience the whole festival.” Kane & Abel first started performing aged just 15 in Shropshire. They have since performed all over the world at five-star holiday resorts in Greece, Cyprus and Montenegro and arts festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Adelaide Fringe.
