Made a New Year’s resolution? Someone once said to me ‘it is not the direction of the wind that determines where you get to but the set of your sails’. My resolution for 2022 is to try and maintain a tolerant, empathetic and non-judgemental attitude toward others, to try to be positive and compassionate in the face of any and all scenarios that may arise in these unpredictable times.

Meet a local resident who loves meditating on the seafront…

Becca Kilvington is a born and bred West Hovarian. She now lives near Hove Lagoon and is a meditation teacher. What is your background?

How did you become a meditation teacher?

My family going back generations are from Hove and the Sussex area. My grandfather took over St Christopher’s School on New Church Road in the 1950s and my family have had close ties and lived in its proximity ever since.

I started meditating about eight years ago to help me with the challenges of parenthood. It immediately helped me improve my sleeping patterns and reduce my stress and anxiety. I delved deeper, spent a few years studying meditation and then in the first lockdown I completed my teacher training certification and have been teaching ever since.

I grew up on Coleman Avenue and went to school at St Christopher’s and Brighton Girls. After a decade of travelling, studying and working in London, I moved back to Hove, met my husband Andy and three daughters followed shortly afterwards. We have lived by the lagoon for 14 years now.

I run online learn to meditate courses (next course starts on 17 January 2022), lead a dropin Breathwork & Meditation class at the Tree of Life Centre on a Saturday in Hove, I teach meditation to children in schools and offer 1-2-1 kids meditation therapy. What are the benefits of meditation? There are countless benefits to meditating which are individual to each person. Studies have shown that daily practice reduces symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, stress, high blood pressure and depression, and it increases happiness, joy, connection to yourself and others, mental clarity, focus and creativity. In essence, by giving yourself some supercharged meditative downtime each day, your mind and body can rebalance and heal. It’s very empowering. What is your favourite place to go in West Hove?

Without doubt the seafront. I find the sight, sound and smell of the salty sea incredibly calming so if I have a spare 30 minutes in my day, I will always head to the beach no matter the weather. I love running my beachside meditation classes at Rockwater in the spring and summer to tap into all those meditative elements that the sea naturally provides. Flats proposed for Saxon Works site... An application has been submitted by Martin Homes to build a five-storey block of flats and a three-storey office building on the Saxon Works site, on land to the rear of 303-305 Portland Road. The site is in the south-eastern corner of the Portland Road Trading Estate, near Olive Road. An existing industrial building, currently in use as a steel and iron workshop, and a Martin Homes marketing building would be demolished and replaced by 33 flats and 220 square metres of commercial floorspace. The design is by Landivar Architects, who say that the scale of the scheme will relate directly to the neighbouring Martello Lofts flats to the west (also a Martin Homes development). Martin Homes say: “The proposed development is of a contemporary design but responds to the character, style and detailing of adjacent façades and features and would significantly improve the streetscene of Portland Road.”

An application has been submitted by Martin Homes to build a five-storey block of flats and a three-storey office building on the Saxon Works site. An application to demolish six houses on Portland Road (295-305) and build a three-to-four storey development, including up to 47 flats, was refused by the council in 2020. The proposed development would be accessed from the private Portland Road Trading Estate access road on the western boundary of the site. There would be a total of 24 car parking spaces – three at ground level and 21 in the basement – and

An artist’s impression of the proposed scheme

62 cycle parking spaces. The developers say the proposals are not expected to result in a significant impact on traffic in surrounding roads. There have been a number of objections from neighbours to the plans, with concerns over increased traffic, the height of the development, the design, overdevelopment and privacy. One neighbour commented: “The neighbouring development has yet to be completed or fully occupied implying there is not the desire for such scale of development in the area – especially as this development exceeds the scale of that.” You can find full details of the plans and comment on the council’s planning register at: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk (search for application no: BH2021/04068).

Have your say on A259 improvements Residents living near proposed walking, cycling and accessibility improvements to part of the A259 (seafront) are being given the chance to have their say on the plans. A six-week consultation started on 29 November and will end on 9 January 2022. The council would like comments on their proposals for the area between Fourth Avenue and Wharf Road, which include increasing pavement space, extending the protected westbound cycle lane and increasing the number of parking spaces for Blue Badge holders. Residents in the area have been sent information through the post. This information and the consultation can also be found on the council’s One Journey Better webpage www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/onejourneybetter/seafront-a259-active-travel-scheme. To request a paper copy of the consultation email transport.projects@brighton-hove.gov. uk or call 01273 292480. What are the proposals? The walking, cycle and accessibility improvements will be formed of two sections, from Fourth Avenue to Hove Street and from Hove Street to Wharf Road. They include: • Additional pedestrian space, including outside seating space • Raised table junctions and dropped kerbs to assist wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs • Extension of the westbound cycle lane with cyclists separated from motor vehicles • Additional cycle parking spaces, including space for larger and adapted bikes • Additional loading bays and parking spaces for Blue Badge holders. More details can be found on the consultation page. Background In spring 2020, the council secured funding through the Government’s Active Travel Fund to

The council propose to widen pavements outside shops

make walking and cycling improvements to the A259. In August 2020 they installed a temporary westbound cycle lane from West Street to Fourth Avenue. Since the cycle lane was installed, the area has seen an 85% increase in cycling compared to 2019, with 4,897 trips recorded along this stretch on an average day during June 2021. In February 2021, a public consultation was held on the temporary cycle lane between West Street and Fourth Avenue and proposals to improve the space between Fourth Avenue and Wharf Road. At a special meeting of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee in July 2021, members agreed that the council should consult further with businesses and residents directly impacted by the plans for the area between Fourth Avenue and Wharf Road, and in November 2021 the ETS committee agreed to make the temporary cycle lane between West Street and Fourth Avenue permanent. Comments are being received until Jan 9.

Ruins of Aldrington Church The original Aldrington Church (St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road) was built in the 12th century and was dedicated to St Leonard in 1402. With a decline in population by the 16th century, the church gradually fell into decay, then lay in ruins for many years. In 1878, the Ingram family restored it on its old foundations. Where possible, the features of the old church were copied in the new one, and in the case of the two lancet windows in the chancel the actual old stones were used. This photograph was taken in March 1859.

News from the West Hove Forum Kingsway to the Sea Brighton & Hove City Council’s Seafront Development Manager, Toni Manuel, joined our last meeting on 26th November to update us on the Kingsway to the Sea regeneration project. The council has been awarded £9.5 million for this project from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund, to spend on infrastructure that improves everyday life. Kingsway to the Sea covers the area from Hove Lagoon to the lawn by the King Alfred. It will deliver: • An expansion of outdoor family facilities at Hove Lagoon • Improved biodiversity and attractiveness of green spaces • Improved public realm and public art • New routes for pedestrians and cyclists • New and improved sports facilities, including Padel (a form of tennis), beach tennis, croquet and traditional tennis, and investment in the bowling club facilities

Over 70% of respondents said that they regularly visited the area. Popular requests were sand courts, another café/restaurant, a roller-skating surface and improved tennis courts, as well as a new skate park, Padel tennis courts, artificial sports pitches and a pump track. People didn’t want the lawns to be overdeveloped; they would prefer green spaces where they can be quiet and relax.

15 News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

It seems a long time since we were talking to residents in Westbourne in 2018 about the need for family-friendly activities on Hove seafront, some TLC for the landscaping around the promenade, more public toilets and a total revamp for the sporting facilities on Kingsway. So we’re over-the-moon to have worked with a myriad of local groups, council officers, businesses and Peter Kyle – our MP – to secure the funding for this project! You’ll hopefully have heard by now about the so-called Kingsway-to-the-Sea project, which now has £9.5 million for the work. There has already been considerable public consultation about what you would like on this western stretch of the beach, but if you feel like you have not had an opportunity to input your thoughts and ideas we would love you to get involved in the West Hove Seafront Action Group (WHSAG). Throughout 2022 there will be meetings and the opportunity to hear what plans are evolving and to offer your opinion. You can find out more by contacting Rose Hetherton, WHSAG Secretary, at WHSAGBN3@gmail.com We have already heard that you do not want any large development, would like some quiet space – maybe a sensory garden area – a much enhanced revamp of the sports facilities, and much (much!) improved public toilets. The money is not linked to a new King Alfred Leisure Centre, but we will be applying maximum pressure to complete the regeneration of the Hove seafront by finally seeing a new leisure centre for us over this side of town. The council have published a Sports Facilities Investment Plan, and we’re excited to see that this includes a recommendation to find a site for a brand new leisure centre. You can read more here: https://bit.ly/3lLclJ4

Finally, we have to mention the problems so many residents have been contacting us about, and that’s renewing parking vouchers. We tried so hard to get a Mobile Unit (that’s a van to you and I!) while Hove Town Hall is closed but the decision was made to move everything online. Whilst many problems have been ironed out we want to apologise if you’ve had issues that weren’t your fault. And please do contact us if you are still encountering a nightmare – we can speak to the team and try to resolve it for you. Hopefully you can be with friends and family over Christmas and New Year and we wish you the very best. Chris and Carmen Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

17 News from Poets Corner-based charity Stay Up Late…

Stay Up Late charity want to say a big thank you to Hove for welcoming us and helping us become part of this wonderful community. We’ve been very busy this year developing three great projects with local people and supporting our participants to reconnect after lockdown. We have been running a Public Living Room for local people and people with a learning disability to come together and form friendships with purpose.

We have been running a Public Living Room for local people and people with a learning disability to come together and form friendships with purpose. The Public Living Room started outside in the summer with monthly drop-ins and consultation about what Hove Public Living Room could look like. When it was safe to come together indoors we have been running a weekly Living Room on Thursday between 5-7pm in the crush hall and kitchen at the Hove Methodist Church. Lots of tea, cake, coffee, healthy smoothies, laughs, crafty acts and chats have been had. During the darker winter months the Living Room will move to Friday mornings, but we hope to begin evening sessions again in the spring. If you are local and interested in volunteering at the Living Room, for a couple of hours a week, email info@stayuplate. org or telephone our office, 020 3920 8471. We would not have been able to develop this project without our wonderful helpers Christian, Shannara and Fran. What a fantastic team! We have also received so much support from the church, Food

and Friendship, Nam Yang and other local groups, thank you all. Camerados, a national organisation that helps communities reduce isolation and connect together, guided this project and visited in December where we danced around in oversized underwear! It is part of their national campaign: “When life is pants, come together and share some fun”. Andy, Minister at the church, won the pants on/ off race with a total of 42 in one minute! We have also developed our Sports Buddy project, which complements our Gig Buddies project. Both projects enable people with a learning disability to get active and be part of the wider community. Volunteers are trained and supported, then matched to a buddy to play/attend sports events or go to gigs/shows. Have a look at our website if you would like a fun volunteering role in the New Year. www.stayuplate.org.uk Hove is where our hearts are and we really appreciate the welcome and support you continue to give. 19 Meet a local magazine editor…

Marcus Webb lives in Poets Corner. He is co-creator and editor of quarterly magazine Delayed Gratification and his book “An Answer For Everything” has just been published. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? We’re coming up on 10 years now. We were only going to be here for a year or two, the place is addictive. What do you like about the area? This is the first place I’ve ever lived where I’ve really felt part of a community. I love how everything I enjoy – cafés, shops, pubs, restaurants, a swim in the sea, a park for the kids - is within ten minutes’ walk. I’m a sucker for a pub quiz and there are some great ones within staggering distance. I’m also a big fan of Stefano’s pizza van and Quaff. Covid restrictions have made me realise just how lucky we are to be living somewhere with everything. What sort of magazine is Delayed Gratification? Delayed Gratification is an independent print magazine dedicated to Slow Journalism. We return to major events at least three months after they occurred to tell people what happened next. It’s designed as an antidote to the increasingly speedy, kneejerk nature of news journalism and is filled with longform features, beautiful photo essays and infographics. Tell us more about your book, “An Answer For Everything”… We’ve been running infographics in the magazine since we first started in 2011 and we’ve always wanted to create an entire book of them. When Covid began we finally stopped talking about it and did it. Each of the 200 infographics in the book answers one of life’s big questions – so

we tell you everything from what’s the best thing since sliced bread to whether there really are plenty more fish in the sea. We’ve got questions about politics, sport, film, everything really. It was amazing what I found out while doing the research. Did you know that there are nine hammocks on the moon? What do you like to do to relax? I like to go to the Amex Stadium whenever I can (although don’t tell anyone – I’m actually a Leicester City fan) and pre-Covid I went to a lot of gigs in town. Other than that it’s a walk in the Downs, taking the paddleboard out when it’s sunny or one of those pub quizzes. I’m worried I might be turning into a Hove cliché. For more information on Delayed Gratification, visit www.slow-journalism.com. “An Answer For Everything: 200 Infographics to Explain the World” is published by Bloomsbury.

21 Local news…

It remains to be seen whether this year will mark the return to non-Covid normality. Now in its fourth year, Covid-19 keeps donning new disguises and uses them to stalk us even more. As they say, we are learning to live with the virus. Last year, we were fortunate enough to put on a wonderful autumn schedule of three Open Air Cinemas, a brass band concert, and a children’s immersive puppet show. Once spring comes we hope to be able to run events like an Easter egg hunt (cancelled the last two years) and have some live music in the park. We would also like to carry on the cinema programme, too. These events, even the little ones, are a lot of hard work. But they are rewarding to take part in and so I ask, please, that if anyone would like to help in the preparation of these future events, then please get in touch with us. We were also very fortunate to be awarded a grant by the Forestry Commission worth over £10,000. In order to get this, we had to team up with the Friends of Wish Park and the Friends of Davis Park and I had to fill in one of the most complicated application forms ever! Late last year, we finally got confirmation that we will be expecting a delivery of trees to plant in Stoneham Park in the new year. All we now need are a team of helpers to ensure that they are watered and looked after, especially in the spring and summer. Please get in touch if you would like to help your community in this way.

Equally, we were pleased to have been given a grant from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund through the West Hove Forum, money which will go towards purchasing some more tools for our park tidy-ups and to subsidise the substantial costs of putting on the Open Air Cinemas. This will be a great boon to our activities. But grant funds, as grateful as we are to receive them, are no substitute for hands-on help, so please consider making helping us your new year’s resolution. 23 News from the Friends of Hove Park…

Best wishes for 2022 Normality seemed a little closer as the Santa bus again wound its way round the streets after last year’s break, although without a door-to-door collection – the photo shows it starting its 2021 journey from the top of Hove Park. HOVE PARK

The inscription on the information plaque by the ‘Goldstone’ at the southern end of the park had become very worn and was scarcely legible but has now been restored by the Council and is pristine white again. The Friends have gradually restarted some activities to improve the park including gardening sessions. More plug plants have been added to the wildflower mound, and temporary barriers erected by the gardeners across the entrances with a ‘Wildflowers Growing. Please Keep Off Mound’ notice will hopefully give some protection. Elm and ash trees in the park are unfortunately being lost to disease like elsewhere in the city. However the good news is funding should be available during the year to provide various varieties as replacements and actually increase the number of trees in the park. The Friends are hoping to run a comprehensive schedule of events in 2022, starting with their popular Easter Egg Trail as usual on Easter Monday. So, on those positive notes, the Friends would like to wish you all the best for the New Year.

29 Local resident Gareth Hall shares his views on the plans for Toads Hole Valley…

Toads Hole Valley plans The road network needs careful planning if we are to cope. This is the final chance to get it sorted because once Toads Hole Valley is built there won’t be any more land to build new roads on. However, the only plans I have seen to deal with this gridlock are for a couple more sets of traffic lights and a few speed humps. One of the main access/entrance routes into Hove is by Snakey Hill (King George VI Avenue). This route is already severely congested, resulting in cars being forced to gain access to the bypass from adjoining roads that were never designed for so many vehicles using them now, let alone when this additional increase kicks in. Toads Hole Valley is a wildlife oasis; it is home to the last surviving colony of hazel dormice in Brighton and Hove. Their numbers have declined by half in the UK in the last 20 years. Dormice are shy; they don’t like noise. They live in trees and bushes and they hibernate. What are the plans for Brighton and Hove’s dormice? Well, we’re going to squeeze them into a smaller and smaller space wedged between the bypass, a supermarket, houses and factories. There will be a dormouse bridge which will enable them (if they can find it) to seek a new place they can call home in the Three Cornered Copse. Sadly this fairy tale ends there for the dormice as the copse is a very popular dog walking area and dormice are a real delicacy as far as dogs are concerned (there’s quite a few cats up there too). If we can’t protect our local wildlife then we can

hardly complain at the extinction of other species round the world. So come on, Brighton and Hove Council. Don’t bow to pressure from developers. At the very least get some robust workable plans in place before the Toads Hole Valley development is agreed that sorts out the roads and gives us and our wildlife a future to look forward to. If you want to comment on the proposals you can do so by emailing: Planning.Applications@brighton-hove.gov.uk Hurry up though. Time is running out.

Samuel Chapman Salon cuts the confusion with hair colour Are you confused when your stylist talks about semi-permanent and a demi-permanent colour? Or what a toner means? “Say goodbye to colour confusion by reading our simple guide below”, says colour expert, Steven. There are four main types of hair colour: Temporary, Semi, Demi and Permanent. Temporary Temporary or ‘wash out’ hair colour is ideal if you want to experiment with some exciting colours for a one-off occasion.

Temporary hair colour doesn’t penetrate the hair and can be washed out easily, so it’s a fun and versatile option. Semi-permanent colour or ‘Toner’ Semi-permanent colours last up to 20 shampoos. They coat the hair without penetrating it. Otherwise known as a ‘toner’ they add your perfect shade over blonde or lightened hair, also great at refreshing faded colour. Our salon toners also include a special bonder to help strengthen your hair. Demi-permanent – to enhance and refresh Demi-permanent colour takes longer to wash out because it penetrates the hair. Senior Stylist, Lucy suggests, “If you’re colouring your hair for the first time a demi means no long commitment, chat it through with your stylist – we’re always delighted to advise you.” Demi-permanents work well if you want to avoid obvious root regrowth while having a longer-lasting colour. They are great for blending greys, darkening the hair and adding fabulous shine.

GENERAL

“Whether you want to be bright & bold, or a soft pastel, temporary colour is the perfect solution. We love ‘Manic Panic’ Vegan colours for beautiful results.” advises In-salon trainer, Reid.

You’ll have to deal with re-growth, but we can advise on the best way to touch up those roots when they start to show. Our Hairline root touch is popular in between permanent root tint services! Keep your colour from fading and your hair feeling stronger, softer and shinier when you add Redken bonding concentrate to your colour service. Thinking about a change? Permanent Permanent is a great choice if you’re looking for grey coverage or wanting to lighten or darken your hair permanently. Permanent colour penetrates deep into the hair, which means it won’t wash out. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

33 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Voting at Hove Town Hall 1959 It’s Thursday 8 October 1959, Polling Day across the country. The Argus photographer has chosen the perfect moment to catch a cross-section of the people of Hove on the steps of the town hall as they go about their civic duty (ref ARG/3/8161R).

The old town hall, an enormous Gothic red brick building, had been opened in 1882. It was the epitome of Victorian imperial confidence and very grand indeed. There was a great hall, tower, three balconies and stained glass tracery windows. The inaugural banquet served lark and kidney puddings, venison, pheasants, wild duck and oysters, all, of course, washed down with the finest champagne. Just out of vision in this photograph is the glazed porch featuring the Hove coat-ofarms and decorative shields. In its early years the building really was a feast for the senses, dominating the eyes and ears of walking along Church Road. Each day, at three-hourly intervals, the carillon of 12 bells in the tower would play a well-known tune, a different one for every day of the week. Saturday would be either ‘Rule Britannia’ or ‘God Save the King’. As if that wasn’t enough, in 1906 the illuminated clock in the tower marked every hour, ‘with sonorous and penetrating chimes’, according to an unhappy ‘G Matthew, Indi-

an Service (retired)’. In the great hall were concerts and organ recitals, although, by the time of our photograph, a Hove councillor had pronounced organ recitals to be, ‘as dead as a Dodo’. Some Hove residents will still remember the early hours of Sunday of 8 January 1966 when they were woken by fire engines from as far away as Horsham and Hastings racing to the fire which was engulfing their town hall. Gutted and roofless, it was finally demolished in 1971. Swept away, too, was the vision of Hove entertained by its first town commissioners, that of an incipient city bursting with civic pride, celebrating all that ‘progress’ had to offer. If you can describe befriending in three words, what would they be? “Enriching, enjoyable, fun (we laugh a lot).” What is your experience of the charity?

Eco-Business Director of Field Studies Council Philip Turvil said: “The magnificence of urban trees isn’t fully revealed until you really get to know what species are growing where and how they boost our wellbeing by giving colour, shade, wildlife and so much more. The free tree

identification and care guides from the Field Studies Council will help Brighton & Hove households grow their knowledge and connection to trees they live amongst in their gardens, streets and parks.” The distribution of free tree guides is part of a new programme led by Trees for Cities to increase tree canopy cover in smaller coastal cities and towns. Over 55,000 trees will be planted across 83 locations in 7 coastal towns and cities. The project will engage local communities with nature through this transformational greening and inspire a new generation to plant and protect urban trees. The project is also part of The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Local residents will be invited to get involved and “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”. Registration for the free tree identification guides closes on 10th January 2022. 47 News from the council…

New council homes in Portslade A ‘topping out’ ceremony was held on 2nd December at a development of 42 new council homes in Victoria Road, Portslade.

At the topping out ceremony, Councillors David Gibson and Siriol Hugh-Jones, cochairs of the Housing Committee, marked the development reaching its highest point. The project is one of the largest so far in the New Homes for Neighbourhoods (NHFN) building programme, which is Photo courtesy of Jon Rigby/Brighton Independent providing more council homes across the city. across the city.

Sustainability features: The Victoria Road development will be the first new council housing project in the city with a ground source heat pump system to provide heating and hot water for residents. The homes will benefit from other sustainability features as well, including a light gauge steel frame, solar panels and high levels of insulation. There will be a landscaped communal garden for residents, plus living walls on six elevations of the blocks of flats. The scheme will also provide a new civic outdoor space with trees and seating for people using Portslade Town Hall.

Providing more council homes: The Victoria Road development is part of a package of measures to provide much-needed additional homes in the city. Other recent NHFN developments include 30 flats completed at Hawkridge Court, Selsfield Drive, Brighton, last year and 12 flats in Buckley Close, Hangleton. A total of 242 low cost homes are also being built in Coldean, in a development by Homes for Brighton & Hove, a partnership of the council and housing association the Hyde Group, and 104 homes are being built in Wellington Road, Portslade. Plans are progressing for a new community hub and more than 200 council homes in Moulsecoomb.

51 Congratulations to Councillor Amy Heley…

Struggling to pay food or energy bills?

Brighton councillor Household Support receives national Fund award Households in Brighton & Hove who are struggling to pay for food, fuel and other essential costs can get extra help this winter. Local Discretionary Social Fund If you receive benefits and need help to pay for essentials, you can apply for help from the council’s Local Discretionary Social Fund. This fund can provide help with buying food; paying for gas and electricity if you use a key card or a meter; essential items such as beds, cookers or fridges. Community Hub

The Councillor Awards celebrate the contributions of local councillors across England and Wales. Brighton & Hove City Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty, councillor for Brunswick and Adelaide ward in Hove, and independent councillor Bridget Fishleigh, who represents Rottingdean Coastal, were also shortlisted for awards. Cllr Mac Cafferty was shortlisted for the Leader of the Year award, which was won by Cllr Georgia Gould of Camden Council.

If you don’t receive benefits and need help to pay for essentials, you can request support from the council’s Community Hub. Discretionary Council Tax Support If you already claim Housing Benefit or Universal Credit and need extra help to pay your council tax, you can apply for discretionary council tax support.

The awards ceremony took place in London and the winners were selected by a group of judges that included senior councillors and leading stakeholders from across the sector.

The extra support is available until 31 March 2022 and the funding provides vouchers rather than cash.

Amy later said on Twitter: “Really shocked and honoured to have won this award, and huge congratulations to all the other shortlisted young councillors who I admire so much.”

STOMP returns to Brighton & Hove Multi-award-winning show STOMP is returning to Brighton & Hove to raise funds for The Old Market theatre (TOM).

The Old Market is where creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas first collaborated and performed together over 30 years ago. Since then the show has toured all over the world and was also featured as part of the 2012 London Olympics closing ceremony. It’s a perfect event for the whole family and a chance to see a global spectacle up close. The show is being performed as part of The Old Market’s “Gig for a Gig” scheme, where established artists support the next generation of talent by donating performances to TOM. 100% of the profits from the show will pay for new artists to perform on TOM’s stage in the future. The last Gig for a Gig event was donated by Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim, in May 2019. With these performances, the show will also celebrate its 30th anniversary, and TOM will celebrate its belated 10th anniversary.

GENERAL

TOM will become the intimate home of STOMP from February to May 2022. The show is presented as part of a fundraising drive for the venue, and the run will also see members of the company provide workshop opportunities for schools, young people and community groups. Winner of multiple awards including the Olivier, Obie and Drama Desk awards, STOMP sees a troupe take everyday objects, such as matchboxes, wooden poles, brooms and hubcaps, and turn them into a percussive juggernaut of a performance.

Co-creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas said: “This is all about giving back. We love this city, and we love The Old Market as it holds such a special place in our hearts. We want to do what we can to provide an injection of cultural energy into Brighton and Hove, and we also want to continue to provide opportunities for new artists to perform at The Old Market by raising the funds needed to ensure that TOM can carry on for many, many years to come.” STOMP opens at The Old Market (Upper Market Street, Hove BN3 1AS) on Wednesday 16 February 2022. Tickets start at £15 and are available from The Old Market Box Office on 01273 201 801 or via theoldmarket.com.

Coming up at Brighton Dome Kevin Clifton - Burn the Floor

Van Morrison

Kevin Clifton in Burn the Floor

Former Strictly Come Dancing favourite Kevin Clifton is due to be finally burning the floor at Brighton Dome on 23 January. The event has been rescheduled several times due to the Covid pandemic. After the sell-out success of the first ever UK tour of Burn the Floor in 2019, this fiery, energetic and revolutionary ballroom production will, once again, set the stage alight with a mix of eclectic live music, jaw-dropping choreography and ground-breaking moves. Feel the intensity of the passionate tango, be swept away by the romance of the waltz and be captivated by the sensual, alluring rumba.

London Philharmonic Orchestra In “Stormclouds and Spring Flowers” (29 January), the London Philharmonic Orchestra will play Debussy’s Printemps (Symphonic Suite) and Première Rhapsodie, Copland’s Clarinet Concerto and Dvořák’s Symphony No 7, conducted by Kazushi Ono, with Andreas Ottensammer on the clarinet.

Also at Brighton Dome this month (27 & 28 January) is prolific recording artist Van Morrison. The multi-Grammy award-winning Northern Irish singer-songwriter, who was knighted in 2016, has had a stream of hits such as Brown Eyed Girl, Moondance, Jackie Wilson Said, Have I Told You Lately and Gloria, and is still recording new music.

February shows Performers coming to Brighton Dome in February include Strictly’s Anton Du Beke and his professional dancing partner Erin Boag with Showtime, a glittering celebration that pays tribute to some of the world’s greatest icons of entertainment, including Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Tom Jones and many more. Also in February, the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing two works by Mendelssohn, including Fingal’s Cave, as well as works by Ravel and Fauré, with a 21-year-old virtuoso from Shanghai, Junyan Chen, on piano. TV documentary maker and presenter Stacey Dooley will be in conversation, following the publication of her new book exploring the mental health crisis in Britain and its impact on young people. Coming up at Theatre Royal Two Cigarettes in the Dark Two Cigarettes in the Dark is a new comedy by Stephen Wyatt coming to Theatre Royal Brighton from 4-9 April as part of a UK tour.

(Bergerac, Doctor Who), Michael Lumsden and Timothy Watson (Alistair Lloyd and Rob Titchener in The Archers), Natasha Magigi, Juliet Garricks and Hilary Tones. Fatal Attraction

When happily married attorney Dan Gallagher meets charming editor Alex on a night out in the city, they both commit to a night of passion they can’t take back. Dan returns home to his family and tries to forget his mistake, but Alex has different ideas. Dan’s about to discover that love is a dangerous game. The play stars Kym Marsh as Alex Forrest, Oliver Farnworth as Dan Gallagher and Susie Amy as Amy Gallagher. The Tiger Who Came To Tea

Bright, witty and fiercely independent, Isabel is not ready to let go just yet. In a series of encounters with an old friend and her two sons, by turns funny, startling and poignant, home truths are exchanged, and her past begins to emerge. As Isabel confronts her own hidden regrets and family secrets, we learn what hides below the surface of this proud mother, wife and friend. Finally, Isabel is able to make peace with her life and say goodbye. Dame Penelope Keith, renowned for her stage and television work including The Good Life and To The Manor Born, will play Isabel. She will be joined by Liza Goddard

A delightful family show is coming to the Theatre Royal from 1-3 February – a stage version of Judith Kerr’s classic children’s story, The Tiger Who Came To Tea. The musical play is coming direct from the West End and is packed with oodles of magic, sing-along songs and clumsy chaos! Shrek The Musical If you’re looking for a half-term treat for the children, there’s an amateur production of Shrek from 16-19 February, bringing the much-loved animated film characters to the stage in this uplifting story of a little ogre. 65 The mysterious story of the Preston Manor Fabergé…

Finding Fabergé Curators at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery are trying to solve an international mystery after the chance discovery of forgotten Fabergé items.

This cache of Fabergé yielded a gold-mounted photograph frame in translucent purple enamel, important enough to imply some sort of royal provenance. Next to it was another smaller frame in rose pompadour enamel. There were two enamelled gum pots, one with a moonstone finial and the other topped with a garnet and objet de luxe, in the form of a striking blue stamp damper. The exquisite five items are now on show at the museum with a question-mark at the centre of the display. Although both photographs show women of high status, there is no record of who they are. However, Geoffrey Munn has an idea that one of the women might have royal connections. He said: “The lady in the purple frame looks very like Princess Alice of Battenberg, mother of the Duke of Edinburgh.” The Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust are now hoping other people can help identify the two mysterious women. In another twist to the story, RPMT curatorial staff have discovered a link to a British spy which may explain how the items ended up in Britain. Dame Ellen Thom-

In 2019, Geoffrey Munn, fine jewellery expert on BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow, was visiting Martin Pel, the fashion curator at the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, when he spotted just the corner of some Fabergé items wrapped up in tissue paper in the museum stores. Geoffrey knew straight away that he was looking at work produced in Russia, under the watchful eye of Carl Fabergé, the famous Imperial Court jeweller to the tzars.

as-Stanford, who used to own Preston Manor, had a stepson Henry Vere Benett, nicknamed Croppy, who was based in St Petersburg during the Russian revolution in 1917. During this time, he wrote to his stepmother saying he “hunted long and often in jewellers and bric a brac [shops]” to send back to her. Could Croppy have picked up this Fabergé collection from a Russian émigré fleeing the revolution? In such desperate times, many people sold their riches and art works to fund their escape. Curator Martin Pel said: “These are beautiful items which we’d like to know more about. If you have information contact info@rpmt.org.uk or call 03000 290906.” Brighton Museum & Art Gallery Until June 2022

67 News from the council…

Response to cycle hangar survey The council have thanked around 2,000 residents who responded to a recent survey on cycle hangars for Brighton & Hove.

The cycle hangar scheme will be rolled out in stages following further consultation through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). This will give all affected residents and businesses a further chance to have their say on the proposed cycle hangars at particular locations once decided. It’s hoped the first cycle hangars will be in place early in 2022 along with information on how to apply for a space.

The six-week survey was launched at the start of October to gauge demand for 100 new cycle hangars for residents to safely park their bikes near to their homes where they don’t currently have space. The cycle hangars are approximately the size of one car parking space and can store six standard sized bicycles. Steve Davis, Co-Chair of the Environment,

GENERAL

The six-week survey was launched at the start of October to gauge demand for 100 new cycle hangars for residents to safely park their bikes near to their homes where they don’t currently have space. The results of the survey are now being analysed and requests will be assessed against criteria before a shortlist of 100 locations is drawn up.

Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “I’m delighted so many people got involved in the survey and expressed an interest in having cycle storage near their home. I’m sure there are a lot of residents who would cycle more or consider buying a bike if they had a safe and secure place to keep it. We know that people who live in blocks of flats or in HMOs simply don’t have the space to have them indoors, or would struggle to carry them up and down stairs. “If we’re to encourage active and sustainable travel, we have to support residents by providing the changes they need, that will make walking and cycling a real possibility for them - regardless of where they live in the city. I really can’t wait to see the first hangars hit the streets.”

69 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

New dawn, new day, new year There’s a lot we can do to deal with this dark and gloomy time of year. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to health. Someone’s brisk walk will be another person’s stroll and a flapjack might be a treat for a sedentary person but fuel for a runner. Our lifestyles and genetics are different so consider what suits you. Here’s three top tips that generally apply to most of us. In winter we’re short on natural light which we need to regulate our body clocks and as an all-important source of vitamin D. Vitamin D works with calcium and phosphorus for strong healthy bones, muscles and teeth and is also important for protecting muscle strength. All adults and children over the age of one should consider taking a daily supplement containing ten micrograms of Vitamin D especially during autumn and winter. A supplement only needs to contain ten micrograms to meet the recommendation – those with a higher content of vitamin D are unnecessary and could be harmful in the long run. Limit light from screens late at night; they can interfere with our circadian rhythm and disrupt sleep. Good sleep equals good mood. Regular exercise Going for regular walks has heaps of benefits especially in nature which studies have shown improves mental health. It’s far more beneficial integrating shorter walks throughout the week than just one really long one at the weekend. It helps manage your blood sugar and improves your circulation. If you’re embarking on a new exercise regime, it’s better to start small and build. The all-too-familiar story is going hell for leather and not being

able to stick with the programme. Choose something you can maintain and enjoy! Then gradually increase the load. Quality over quantity New year diets should focus on quality over quantity. Go for varied balanced diets based on whole foods and plenty of fruit and veg. Vegetable consumption has been associated with high levels of mental wellbeing. The reasons why diets higher in protein and fibre work is that they take more energy to digest. They kept you fuller for longer whilst absorbing fewer calories. Go for slow energy-releasing complex carbs and avoid added sugars. Steer clear of unhealthy unsustainable fad diets - check out https://www.bda.uk.com/resource/ fad-diets.html for more info. As for ‘detoxes’, you have a liver for that, just cut down on the ‘excesses and toxins’ in the first place.
