4 News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…

The destruction of a hedge On several workdays in 2018 and 2019, the Friends of Three Cornered Copse planted hundreds of native saplings along the border with Dyke Road Avenue on the bund. The new hedge was starting to develop encouragingly. One day in early December 2021, without any warning or discussion, the gardening team of Brighton & Hove Cityparks took only a few minutes to remove the hedge and mow the young trees to the ground. The bank contained Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Common Dogwood and Guelder Rose saplings that had become established; it was particularly disappointing as our ecology expert confirmed that the Blackthorn contained eggs of the rare Brown Hairstreak butterfly. The habitat we were trying to build and encourage has now been severely diminished. The bank is normally a feast of daffodils in the spring, and to our knowledge has never been mown before. The gardening team could offer no explanation why they had done this (particularly as it is not the

growing season). We can only postulate as to whether this was the same team that mowed the verge on King George VI Avenue (Snakey Hill) last spring, when the violet tulips were in full bloom. For the friends group, this was quite a hard knock to take, and devalues the work that we have put in over the years. The Cityparks department have promised to make amends, and supply new trees, but we remain unconvinced that they have taken steps to ensure that the mowing won’t happen again. Ironically, the Cityparks Ranger was with us for help and encouragement when we originally planted the trees. In the background there is the continuing threat of the Toads Hole Valley development, and the effect that will have on the copse. Amendments and objections are being collected by the planning team, but the proposals to shave the top north-east corner of the copse to provide more road space still remain.

It’s mid-winter in the copse, it’s muddy, but the trees are starting to bud and the snowdrops we planted at the very top of the wood are starting to show. Not the season for work days, more the season for leaving alone, so nothing planned as I write. It’s getting close to the time of year when young trees should be planted, particular the native species, for a hedge. A prompt to the Cityparks people to rectify their vandalism is probably overdue. News from Conservative councillors for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen and Vanessa Brown…

Hove Park Councillor News HOVE PARK SCHOOL On 10 January, Hove Park took 65 students to the Brighton & Hove Cross Country Championships at Waterhall. This was a great achievement for the school. We visited the Nevill Road Campus on 21 January to tour the school and speak with the headteacher, staff and students. TOADS HOLE VALLEY This is silly season now with more housing proposed in a newer application, but with less traffic modelled! In making a decision, the Council will base its assessment on a 2015 housing needs assessment which recommends the following strategic mix of homes: 1 bedroom (25%), 2 bedroom (35%), 3 bedroom (30%) and 4 bedroom + (10%).

NEVILL AVENUE Residents on Nevill Avenue raised growing safety concerns with a significant increase in parking on the road and speeding vehicles, despite the 20mph zone. Police have been undertaking speed checks and we met with residents on 14 January to explore options to resolve the matter. Nevill Avenue is not within a Controlled Parking Zone so instead of double yellow lines, officers can issue white Access Protection Markings where needed.

COUNCIL BUDGET We are still waiting for written answers from the Council on any investment made in the Hove Park Ward since 2019 and are specifically waiting for news on our budget wins for the ward SACKVILLE ROAD Artists Corner residents from last year. These include larger bins have said they spotted rats in their rubbish for the park and new basketball hoops, neither of which have materialised. after work to remedy concrete in the sewers left council bin lorry crews unable Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen to get down Landseer and Prinsep Roads. & Councillor Vanessa Brown The concrete came from building work on the Moda Living site. Council officers told vanessa.brown@brighton-hove.gov.uk us before Christmas that ‘We are needing 01273 291143 to reconfigure our work to be able to have samer.bagaeen@brighton-hove.gov.uk a small dustcart free to undertake regular 07562 437606 collections. We are aiming to initiate collections using this new method asap.’ This did not happen over the holidays and disruption is set to continue for some time. Do please get in touch if you have been affected by this. MALLORY HOUSE Extensive works were carried out for tree removal in the grounds around Mallory House, off Mallory Road. Trees that were not supposed to be removed were felled and, in response, we asked officers to visit the site. Area order TPO 2022 (1) was served on 7 January as a result. It is very expensive to plant new trees in the city and we should cherish the ones we have. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

News from the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust…

Booth Museum to create wildlife diorama

HOVE PARK

9

The Booth Museum of Natural History in Dyke Road has been awarded a £50,000 grant for a community project to create a new museum display inspired by the public’s love of birds and wildlife. Participants will help to create a new museum ‘diorama’ - a scene with 3D figures - that will provide scientific information for future generations. The Booth Museum aims to engage with residents of Brighton & Hove to discover what they love about nature and their thoughts about climate change in the city. Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust staff will run a series of fun pop-up events around the city to share the treasures of the Booth Museum and encourage people to think about natural history and climate change. The public will be asked what might be put in a modern Brighton diorama now, versus what would have been seen in the past. They will also be asked about their experience of wildlife in the city in their gardens, parks and streets. Workshops and school activities are also planned. After the public consultation, the Booth Museum will create the first diorama to be built in the museum for over a century. The museum showcases stuffed British birds collected by Edward Booth in the 19th century and displayed in dioramas he had made, the first known examples of birds displayed in recreations of their observed natural habitat and behaviour. Dioramas have since been used in museums around the world. The taxidermy birds and animals will come from existing historical collections or by preserving modern wildlife which died of natural causes or by accident.

The project aims to address the challenge of climate change faced by the natural world in the 21st century, using comparisons to cutting edge innovations in the 19th century study of British birds through the work of Edward Booth. It will demonstrate that the study of historical natural history collections can help our understanding of preserving natural history in the modern world and show that everyone can play their part in understanding the value of scientific museum collections. 10 This article is by Poets Corner resident Stella Stephens…

Raise awareness of bile duct cancer As a resident of Brighton and Hove for the last twenty years, just a few months ago I was enjoying an ordinary life, living in Poets Corner with my husband and children and working for the NHS. After some unusual pains in my abdomen I visited my GP who sent me for an ultrasound. I was relieved to be told all was normal and I went about my business. However the pain worsened and, after being fobbed off at A & E and the GP, I went out of area and unfortunately, after further investigation, I was found to have a tumour in my bile ducts, later found to be cancerous. Consequently, I had two-thirds of my liver removed and am currently undergoing chemotherapy. Some of you may remember a previous Hove resident, Sally Dalton, a wife and mother of two who was also diagnosed with bile duct cancer - cholangiocarcinoma - in 2020. Sally tragically died on 18th December 2021. Her cancer was only discovered after a routine scan for a different condition.

This is allegedly a ‘rare’ type of cancer but it is becoming more common with a significant increase of incidence in the last year. This is allegedly a ‘rare’ type of cancer but it is becoming more common with a significant increase of incidence in the last year. It is also a particularly aggressive form of cancer and, if not detected early, life expectancy beyond five years is very low. There is no room for error or a lack of awareness and education amongst the professionals we rely upon. It is likely that, had I not persisted, my cancer would have been detected too late for it to be operable.

With poor awareness comes minimal treatment options. In the UK we are far behind other parts of the world and currently do not offer liver transplants because detection is usually too late and therefore not considered a feasible option. We are desperately in need for more signatures to this petition to ask government to give this type of cancer some attention. Please take the time to sign and share: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/594451 It takes a few moments and could save many lives. You never think it will affect you and then it does. If you want to ask more questions or follow my journey you can find me on Instagram @starsa77 Love & luck Stella x

13 Local news…

The winter is usually a fallow time in Stoneham Park, so February is when we plan for the warmer spring and summer months. Even after such a busy autumn schedule, we still hope to make sure that there’s something going on in the park as often as we can. On Easter Sunday we expect to be able to hold an Easter egg hunt, and as we look further afield, hopefully there will be nothing stopping us from having a summer fair in June or July! What I would really like to concentrate on in the meantime is to get the nature trail planted, in partnership with the city council. As we mentioned in our article last month, the upkeep of the plants and trees, and watering them in the spring and summer, is very much down to a band of volunteers that we will be assembling.

The sun rises over brand new sports facilities in Stoneham Park

If you would like to help out at any of the events I have already mentioned, our next Open Air Cinema season, or any ideas you would like to contribute, and of course to get your hands a bit dirty with the trees and the gardening, then please get in touch with us. Better still, why not attend our next meeting which will be on Saturday, 26 February at 15.00. Please keep an eye on our website and our social media pages for the venue and final confirmation of the time. 17 A new kind of sport has just started at Hove Methodist Church…

Chi Lee and Sasha Loo are founders of The S Events, based in Hove. The S Events is the official licensee in the UK of HADO - an augmented reality sport - and they have just started sessions at Hove Methodist Church. We asked Chi and Sasha about the sport… Who can play? Regardless of age, gender or ability, anyone can jump right into this exciting sport. HADO integrates sports with technology by incorporating athletic ability and strategic skill to provide athletic enjoyment to everyone. You held the first HADO Brighton Open in December at Ralli Hall. How did that go? Tell us more about HADO and augmented reality sport… HADO is the convergence of physical sport and AR technology. It is the first AR Sport in the world that allows players to move freely in a real-life court environment. It involves throwing superhuman energy balls at your opponent and deploying protective shields. Success in HADO relies on a mix of strategies, agility and teamwork. What can we expect at the Hove Methodist Church sessions? Meet other HADO players and learn this exciting new AR Sport. Bring a friend or team up with others. You will learn how to launch energy balls from your hand and defend yourself with energy shields. Our HADO Sports coach will train you on using your AR equipment and teach you basic movements and coordination. You will get to team up and train with AI bots and compete in 1v1, 2v2, and 3v3 matches. This session is designed to help you improve your physical health, coordination, reaction speed, agility, teamwork, and much more.

Brighton is home to the HADO UK Champions, 2019, 2020, and 2021. It was an honour to host our first HADO Open Tournament in Brighton and have teams from around the country coming to compete, with fans from as far as London. It was a successful tournament with Brighton teams winning first, second and third place. We look forward to hosting more tournaments in Brighton this year and streaming live commentary matches on YouTube and twitch tv. What do you think is the future for HADO? We believe there will be more HADO athletes in the near future and Brighton will be the home arena for training and creating more champions. HADO AR Sport is now played in 36 countries and as e-sports are making their debut in the Olympics, we are certain HADO will be recognised as a professional sport appearing at major games and Olympics in the not so distant future. The Hove Methodist Church sessions are on Wednesdays at 16.00-19.00. To find out more, contact HADO AR SPORTS on 01273 030766.

19 News from Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Conservative councillors for Wish ward…

Two large Kingsway-related projects – one bad, one good – have dominated our work as Wish Ward Councillors in recent months. The first is the highly controversial issue of the A259 cycle lane consultation which we were successful in forcing the Administration to carry out. The consultation itself is welcome but its contents are not. It is more a list of pointless questions than a meaningful opportunity for residents to give a wide range of helpful views on an important local issue. Most concerning though is that the consultation does not adequately explain what is proposed. Essentially, the Council plans to remove a lane from the west-bound carriageway from King Alfred to the Lagoon to create a second cycle lane; in addition to that which is on the pavement already (one on the pavement, one on the road). Following huge congestion on the Old Shoreham Road following the removal of carriageways, there are of course concerns over the proposals, with the added issue on the seafront of multiple right-turns that will undoubtedly bring traffic to a stand-still. The second project is ‘Kingsway to the Sea’ to re-landscape the various spaces between Kingsway and the Promenade on the West Hove seafront. As some background, the project began with us commissioning our own study as Wish Ward Councillors some years back. Others clearly saw the potential for change and it was ultimately through the West Hove Forum that the community was able to win support from the Council for action; with funding from central Government. As far as community goes, in Wish Ward particularly, we are keen that both the

Friends of Hove Lagoon and Hove Beach Hut Association continue to act as principal consultees alongside the West Hove Seafront Action Group. Plans are still very much under development but it looks like our proposals for sensitive and sensible changes to the Lagoon, along with a new BMX pump track and park to the east, look likely to be included. We’ve otherwise been working hard to secure road safety improvements which take the form of numerous new junctions along Portland Road and a 20mph speed limit. Trees feature heavily in the project and can be seen popping up along Portland Road and on surrounding streets. We will shortly be announcing exactly what the tree offering for Glebe Villas is to be following over two years of fundraising and negotiations. Cllrs Robert Nemeth & Garry Peltzer Dunn Robert.Nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk Garry.Peltzerdunn@brighton-hove.gov.uk

23 Meet a local knitwear designer…

West Hove person… Julia Meecham Klein Julia Meecham Klein lives in West Hove and runs her own knitwear and jewellery business, Wired and Tangled, from a studio in St John’s Road. How long have you lived in West Hove? WEST HOVE

I have lived in West Hove for three years and love it. I lived in central Hove for several years and then moved out of the area for a while and had a family. Now we are all back and really happy to be here and enjoying Hove. What sort of products are available at Wired and Tangled? I make a lot of very colourful products. Mostly knitwear - cardigans, jumpers, dresses, skirts, hats, scarves, snoods, leg warmers and large pom pom hair clips, and some wovenwear clothing too. Do you do all your own knitting? Yes I knit and make everything myself from start to finish from my studio in Hove, using an industrial hand flat knitting machine and single and double bed domestic knitting machines and linkers. I also use various other machinery for wovenwear and jersey clothing manufacture. I hand crochet and hand knit too. I spent a year learning to make jewellery using books and online tutorials as I wanted to replace a ring that I bought at a festival for £5 which broke. I couldn’t find anything similar and missed it, so I thought I would make my own! I found it really rewarding, interesting and a whole new world of creativity so I carried on. It’s hard to make time for all the things I would like to create! I started making wovenwear when I was young and then specialised in knitwear whilst studying fashion and textiles at London College of Fashion and then went

back into education as a mature student and did a fashion knitwear design degree. What is your most popular item? I have put my clothes into shops and boutiques with my previous labels, and cardigans were what I sold most of. Since starting my online business I have mostly been making and selling accessories whilst I get going; the snoods are popular at the moment. How do you like to spend your free time? I spend a lot of my spare time walking along the Sussex beaches, sea swimming, cycling, reading, playing piano and guitar, doing yoga and rollerskating. I also really enjoy aerial arts, aerial hoop, trapeze and aerial yoga and of course knitting and making things! For more information visit wiredandtangled. com, email info@wiredandtangled.com or phone 01273 227400.

Extra storey for Dolphin Court approved WEST HOVE

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 12th January, have approved plans to build an additional storey above the Dolphin Court flats on the east side of Hove Street, on the corner of Vallance Road. The building is currently six storeys high, with 33 flats, and the extra storey will provide three more flats with roof terraces. The site is within the Old Hove Conservation Area. 19 objections were raised to the application. 15 of these were from neighbours who will be directly affected. The concerns raised included: an adverse effect on the conservation area; restriction of light to neighbouring homes; noise from the new roof terraces; noise and disruption from building works; and an increase in traffic and demand for parking spaces. The council’s Conservation Advisory Group recommended that the application be refused. They said that, although the application was to add a single storey, it would in fact be two storeys as the plant and lift over-run would add to the height. It would have a negative impact on the character of the Old Hove Conservation Area and a detrimental effect on the scale of housing in nearby streets. However, a report to the committee recommended that the application be granted, as it would provide three dwellings within an extension to an existing building, which is considered a significant benefit in a time of housing need, and it would provide a good standard of accommodation without a significantly adverse effect on heritage assets, neighbouring amenity or highways safety.

Computer-generated image showing the extra storey

At the committee, Cllr Clare Moonan supported the application, which is in her own Central Hove ward. She said: “Probably across the city we need to take these opportunities to build one extra floor where we can and where it’s proportionate.” Cllr Nick Childs agreed: “Whilst not ideal, the alternative as I see it is salami-slicing the South Downs and building on greenfield sites.” However, Cllr Dawn Barnett said that her concern was for the people who already live there. “A lot of people buy a top flat because that’s what they wanted, with noone above them, and they’re being forced now to have another two storeys on top of that and noise that they did not expect when they purchased their flat.” Cllr Carol Theobald thought it was an overdevelopment: “I think it’s just too much for that area.” The committee voted by six votes to two to grant the application.

29 News from the council…

Celebration of women’s football Brighton & Hove, as one of the nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities, is taking part in a National Lottery funded project to uncover the hidden history of women’s football in a summer of celebration of the game, its players and communities. In partnership with the FA, the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust joined a number of other organisations across England for the project which has been awarded £500,000 by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. It’s an important year for women’s football, as England hosts the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 and the Lionesses – the England women’s team - mark their 50th anniversary. However, the history of the game goes back a lot further than many might think. This year also marks 141 years since women’s football was first played professionally. Challenging perceptions The National Lottery funded project aims to challenge the common perception of women’s football being ‘new’ and change the nation’s understanding of ‘the English game’. For the very first time, information about every England player, captain, goal scorer and match score since 1972 will be researched, recorded and shared alongside the information that already exists about men’s football. Hosted on England Football’s website, the record will continue to be updated, ensuring future female players are part of the nation’s footballing story. The project will particularly explore the role of the LGBTQ+ community. Host city Brighton & Hove is one of nine UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 host cities, taking part in a fantastic range of community

events and celebrations this summer. Staff at The Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust are excited to work with local footballers, past and present, to explore, record and share the heritage of women’s football in the city. Teams such as Brighton GPO and Brighton Supporters Club were instrumental in the revival of women’s football in Sussex in the 1970s, changing attitudes towards women playing football, and paving the way for women and girls today to play football, both professionally and recreationally. Goal power! At the heart of the city’s offer is Brighton Museum’s major exhibition, Goal Power! Women’s Football 1895-2022, opening on 18 June. Plus, look out for costumed figures in the city’s Fan Zone during the tournament, sharing stories of women’s football from the past 130 years, and fun activities and thought-provoking events at Brighton Museum.

32 News of a council survey…

Safety of women and girls Brighton & Hove City Council are carrying out a survey investigating how safe women and girls feel in Brighton & Hove. They would like to find out about any experiences of violence against women and girls in the city and views on the support received. Your responses will inform the development of a new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy for the city, looking at how all services work together to make Brighton & Hove safe for everyone. This follows the launch of the new national ‘Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy’ in July last year, which includes a strong emphasis on safety in public spaces. The VAWG strategy will also sit beside the new Sussex-wide domestic abuse accommodation and support strategy. Violence against women and girls The term ‘Violence Against Women and Girls’ covers a range of serious violent crime types that disproportionately affect all females. These include: domestic abuse; sexual violence including rape; sexual exploitation; sexual harassment; stalking; ‘honour-based’ violence (HBV); forced marriage; faith-based abuse; female genital mutilation (FGM) or cutting; forced prostitution and human trafficking; violence against all women and girls in public spaces; online violence. The survey is focused on the experiences of anyone over the age of 16.

They would like to hear the views of anyone who lives, studies or works in Brighton & Hove, including all men and boys, on any experiences of these violent crimes. The survey is open until Sunday 20 February. You can find it at: https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov. uk/neighbourhoods-communities/vawgin-bh-survey/ All information will be strictly confidential. If you’d prefer not to respond to a particular question, you’ll be able to move onto the next one. No responses will be traced back to any individuals. Tackling violence

Are you looking to embrace your grey hair? With more people deciding to let their grey hair grow through, our teams have been looking at ways we can help you.

GENERAL

“If you are thinking of stepping away from the hair dye altogether you will need to have a plan in place. We encourage you to come in for a complimentary consultation”– says salon educator, Reid. “We will then put a plan in place for you to know what to expect and how to keep your hair in great condition during your transformation.” To Blend A first step would be to consider ditching the permanent hair colour and switch to a demi-permanent instead. “A Demi-permanent colour will cover up to 70% of white hair and what it doesn’t cover will blend. As this grows through it will give the hair natural looking highlights and a softer line of regrowth.” Says Senior Stylist, Alex. To Brighten Next, ask your colourist to start adding lighter pieces throughout your hair, starting at the hairline where it tends to go grey first. “The idea is to start creating a lighter, multi-dimensional base which allows us to work at putting lighter pieces in over time” says Senior Stylist, Steven. Maintenance It is important to know that there is always some level of maintenance involved when you start lightening your hair. We recommend having a bond building treatment with each colour service. Our clients’ favourite is Redken’s bonding concentrate which helps to keep your hair soft, strong and shiny. Gloss toners

How to care for grey hair “Grey hair has no natural pigment so it can become yellow over time,” explains Senior stylist, Lucy. “To prevent this from happening we recommend a clarifying shampoo to eradicate impurities, followed by a silver shampoo to neutralise yellowness and add softness,” she continues. Lastly, you’ll have noticed that the lack of pigment in grey hair also affects the texture. “It can also be dry and wiry,” Lucy suggests, so take conditioning seriously with the addition of a weekly moisture mask. 43 Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating 70 years on the throne…

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee On 6th February 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will have been on the throne for 70 years – longer than any previous British monarch. However, the main celebrations won’t take place until 2nd to 5th June, when there will be a four-day celebration of the Platinum Jubilee. The May Spring Bank Holiday will move to Thursday 2nd June and there will be an additional bank holiday on Friday 3rd June.

GENERAL

On Thursday 2nd June, celebrations will start with the Queen’s Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour), and beacons will be lit around the country as well as in the capital cities of Commonwealth countries. It is hoped that Hove Beacon will be lit for the occasion – a project is already underway to create a permanent lighting scheme. On Friday 3rd June there will be a Service of Thanksgiving for the Queen’s reign in St Paul’s Cathedral, and on Saturday 4th June, Platinum Party at the Palace, a live concert from Buckingham Palace, will be broadcast by the BBC. On Sunday 5th June local communities are invited to share their own Big Jubilee Lunch – for ideas on hosting an event, visit: edenprojectcommunities.com/blog/the-big-jubilee-lunch. The application process for street parties is detailed on the council’s website. Also on 5th June, The Platinum Jubilee Pageant, featuring over 5,000 people, will take place against the backdrop of Buckingham Palace. It will combine street arts, theatre, music, circus, carnival and costume, and will also honour the collective service of people and communities across the country. Platinum Jubilee medals will be awarded to serving frontline members of the police, fire, emergency services, prison services and the Armed Forces.

The Cleaning Gurus Having heard the laments of friends looking for reliable, trustworthy and effective cleaners to no avail, Vesna and Evelina decided to take matters into their own hands, resulting in the birth of Cleaning Gurus®. Starting from scratch in 2008, the women worked as cleaners themselves, working hard to create the reputation for an outstanding service and meticulous cleaning that has stayed with the company until today. Soon, Cleaning Gurus® was vetting and contracting additional local cleaners and has now grown into an award-winning company that recently started operating in Brighton & Hove to help with all your domestic or commercial cleaning needs ad hoc or on a regular basis. With a reputation for incredible service, Cleaning Gurus® used a variety of different cleaning products and chemicals to maintain their clients’ properties to the company’s meticulous standard. This began to concern our founders as their fantastic cleaning force were exposed

to potentially dangerous chemicals day in and day out. The environmental impact of plastic packaging and solvent chemicals was also a pressing issue in the wake of climate change. Client surveys proved that customers preferred and wanted to use eco-friendly, non-toxic products, but these products were difficult to find in local supermarkets. Vesna and Evelina decided that the only thing to do was to, once again, take matters into their own hands and make the products themselves. In 2016, The EcoGurus® was born, with the first line of non-toxic, eco-friendly, family safe products ready to be used. Created initially for their own cleaning force, the EcoGurus® products received such good feedback from clients that the line was expanded and introduced to the public marketplace. 47 A new play coming to Theatre Royal in June…

Michelle Collins to star in Cluedo Was it Miss Scarlett, with the revolver in the dining room…? Actress Michelle Collins, star of EastEnders, Coronation Street and 2000 Acres of Sky, is to star as the iconic Miss Scarlett in the UK tour of the new play Cluedo.

Michelle Collins said: “I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of Cluedo. It’s such an iconic game and I remember how much I loved playing it with my cousins when we were younger. I’m delighted that it’s being brought to the stage – and having really enjoyed reading the script, I’m sure audiences across the UK will love it.” When Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock, Reverend Green, Mrs White and Colonel Mustard arrive at a country house one dark and stormy evening, they are surprised to find they have all received the same intriguing invitation from Lord Boddy. It soon becomes clear that they all have something to hide as the mystery and hysteria grow and the inhabitants and guests of Boddy Manor are killed off one by one, with a variety of familiar weapons, leaving everyone to wonder, who will be next! This hilarious spoof of a thriller will keep you guessing right up to the finale as both the guests and audience try to work out whodunnit…. with what... and where! Just like the game, this UK premiere pro-

Producer Josh Andrews added: “We wanted an iconic actress to play such an iconic character and we could not be happier to have Michelle starring as Miss Scarlett in Cluedo. Both the game and Clue the movie are much loved by all ages, so it’s a privilege to bring this new play of Cluedo to the UK stage and it could not be in more suitable hands than our director, Mark Bell. Planning application for Brighton gasworks site A planning application has been submitted by St William Homes (in the Berkeley Group) to build a mixed-use development on the Brighton gasworks site, bounded by Roedean Road, Marina Way and Boundary Road. The proposed buildings range from three to twelve storeys, with 553 residential units, including apartments and townhouses, and 2,697m2 of non-residential floorspace. There will be a central “Green Link” for pedestrians through the site. The lowest buildings (three-storey townhouses) will be along the western boundary of the site. St William Homes say the development will regenerate an underutilised brownfield site. A number of positive comments have been submitted to the council, but there have also been a high number of objections. Some neighbours are concerned that the development is too tall and too dense, will overshadow neighbouring properties, create wind tunnels, and create extra traffic and parking problems. There are also concerns that development of the site risks releasing potent toxins into the atmosphere. One supportive resident said: “Looks good, well designed, and of an appropriate scale given this is an urban area and not a town, and good to know the embarrassment of the derelict gas site will soon be gone.” However, a resident of Arundel Street was concerned about the proposals: “I think the development is too big, the traffic around Arundel Street and Boundary Road will be horrendous, with no extra parking?? Not enough green space as promised, too high blocking light on the backs of our houses and increased noise pollution.” Another neighbour said: “Pro-

posing buildings of this height so close to low rise housing demonstrates a complete disregard, contempt even, for the lives of existing residents in the area.” A resident of Sussex Square said: “Our chief concern is about the contaminated nature of the site and the prospect of the development causing respiratory and other illnesses which have resulted from previous developments of gasworks sites.” The Kemp Town Society have also strongly objected, saying: “The density of the proposed development is significantly out of proportion with all surrounding architecture… This will have a serious and detrimental impact on current infrastructure, quality of life for residents and visitors, and public health and safety issues.” You can find full details of the plans and comment on the council’s planning register at: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk (search for application no: BH2021/04167).

61 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

The myth of the balanced diet

My advice? Firstly, don’t rely on ‘official’ measures of what’s healthy what’s not. For instance, the 5-a-day recommendations, and RDA (recommended daily allowance of nutrients), are based on dated, erroneous inaccurate data that goes as far back as 80 years. RDA levels (and dosage recommendations) in fact assume you are already healthy and just need a little topup from your high-quality unadulterated diet. Is your diet high-quality and unadulterated? It can’t be. Partly because of the lethal cocktail of toxins in our environment (air, water, food) that have accumulated (in our bodies) for the past 100 years. For instance, you might be shocked to know that an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants were found in the umbilical cord of newborn babies in a 2004 study. In addition, our food also has to withstand other challenges such as transportation, storage, mass agriculture that has depleted soils of essential nutrients, and processing and cooking. And let’s not forget chronic stress, over-medication and lack of movement – all very common modern habits. These all unfortunately contribute to struggling immunity, unhealthy gut microbiome and toxic bodies and minds. What’s the solution? I wouldn’t be doing a good job if I didn’t encourage you to do your best to increase

your intake of organic, fresh fruit, vegetables and nutrient-rich unprocessed foods… to about 25 or 30 DAILY servings. Yes, you read that right. And it’s obviously pretty much impossible. This is why so many use a plethora of high-quality supplements, as we’ve known for a long time that food – however pure and unprocessed it might be - no longer provides ALL the nutrients we require for optimal health – however amazing our ‘diet’. The missing element, however, that many forget, is the fact that without a healthy gut, you won’t absorb sufficient amounts of nutrients (from food or supplements) and will most definitely be “..wasting your money on vitamin and mineral supplements” (Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, 2019). You hear it every day: eat your daily five servings of vegetables and fruits! Eat less carbohydrates! Eat more protein! Eat less animal protein! It’s a wonder we actually find anything to eat in all that confusion of conflicting opinions and ‘research’!
