Petition to close greyhound stadium... A petition to close Brighton & Hove Greyhound Stadium in Nevill Road, owned by Coral, was debated by the council at its full meeting on 17th December. Racing has been continuing at the stadium behind closed doors during lockdown. The e-petition had been signed by more than 9,050 people, with 2,097 further paper signatures. It said: “Every week at least two dogs fall, are injured or die at this stadium. 10,000 dogs are removed from the racing circuit every year as more dogs are bred for this industry. The dogs may be exported abroad to countries like China for breeding and racing, killed as surplus to requirements or languish in isolation in kennels for the rest of their lives. All London tracks have closed; let Brighton and Hove be the next. The land in Nevill Road could be used for much needed affordable housing.”

Lead petitioner Sarah Whitehead, representing the Close Hove Dog Track Campaign, told the meeting she was particularly worried about the number of children going to the stadium, despite children not being allowed into betting shops. Green councillor Elaine Hills, responding, said that she too would like to see an end to greyhound racing in the city. However, there was no licence for the council to revoke. “Hopefully by seeing the level of opposition from people within the city Coral will rethink keeping the stadium open, or perhaps the decline in numbers of people attending greyhound racing events will make them realise it’s time to close the stadium, but I look forward to the day when we see an end to this cruel activity which has no place in a caring city like ours.” Labour councillor Jackie O’Quinn also supported the campaign against greyhound racing, saying that current regulations weren’t sufficient. Hove Park ward councillor Vanessa Brown said she wasn’t a lover of greyhound racing herself but the stadium held many charity events and it wasn’t a council decision to make: “There are regular inspections of the health and wellbeing of the dogs and a vet has to be on hand at all the meetings.” She had concerns that many local residents were upset by loud and abusive protests outside the stadium. She said many local people relied on the track for their livelihood and the Conservative Party would not be supporting the petition. Councillors voted to note the petition.

5G Mast: As an urbanist and your councillor, I believe that mast and cabinet infrastructure is hideous and unsightly and is being railroaded by the telecoms operators with little regard for local residents and local place and character. A previously submitted application to upgrade the existing mast site at the junction of Goldstone Crescent and King George VI Avenue (BH2020/01501) was refused and, although not the stated ground for refusal there were objections from the Local Highway Authority regarding pedestrian safety and visibility at the junction. I had asked the applicants to look again at the design in that location but they were not able to provide a clear visibility splay for vehicles approaching the junction from Goldstone Crescent. Moreover, the lawned central area at the junction does not form part of the adopted highway and as such is not available for deployment of equipment.

still get a sufficient depth of verge. This is required to enable the equipment to be set back a minimum of 600mm from the kerb and avoid the necessity to have cabinet doors opening directly onto the footpath, a pedestrian hazard. It is also necessary to avoid the potential damage to tree roots. You can see the location in the attached image so thoughts welcome please. Officers have consistently said that the legal position is that the Council does not owe the public at large a duty of care when determining 5G planning applications. This of course does not stop your councillors fighting your corner. The advice from Public Health England, to which the Council is entitled to give significant weight, is that the roll out of 5G does not pose consequences for public health.

The Wintry Copse For years, Britain’s national parks have been trying to attract more visitors from a broader range of backgrounds and ages. In 2020 Lockdown, they got more than they bargained for. During these months, where travel was banned and local exercise was encouraged, and limited, people have been heading to our green spaces in greater numbers than ever before. This, of course, creates side effects. For example in 2020, the Peak District in Derbyshire had to double its budget for litter collection, and Snowdonia developed a nuisance parking problem. Three Cornered Copse seems to have been blessed with similar phenomena, albeit on a smaller scale. More families, cyclists and runners have swelled the usual dog walking population each day, which has inevitably taken its toll on the woods and grassland. This will recover of course, but the efforts of the Friends of Three Cornered Copse have been needed more than ever in the past 12 months. Of course the workdays, led by a Park Ranger, have not been possible, so much of the heavy lifting and path clearance hasn't happened, during the time when it has been needed most.

Inevitably not all picnickers are thoughtful enough to clear the empties, and we rely heavily on the individuals that patrol and collect the abandoned bottles and cans. Litter has been a problem. With no gatherings permitted in our gardens and bars, liquid picnics have been popular in places like the copse. Inevitably not all picnickers are thoughtful enough to clear the empties, and we rely heavily on the individuals that patrol and collect the abandoned bottles and cans. (If you see them please say “thank you”, it helps enormously.) At the end of last

year, The ButterflyCup was launched, the UK's first ever lidless, plastic-free, environmentally friendly disposable coffee cup (www.butterflycup.com ). We pick up many plastic coffee lids in Three Cornered Copse; I suspect Hove Park and Green Ridge have a similar problem. Let’s hope our local takeaway coffee shops get to start using these as soon as possible. In the meantime, oblivious to our pandemic, the wintry copse continues its cycle. Snowdrops are starting to rise tentatively above the mud, precocious cow parsley shoots are beginning to carpet the forest floor, and the hazel branches are in bud. The woodpeckers have been seen once again; their distinctive drilling can be heard high up in the leafless branches of the taller beech trees. Soon, the muddy paths will be baked hard as concrete, and perhaps the Friends of Three Cornered Copse can start to work again, perhaps with additional members from our new visitors? Simon Baxendale

12 Meet the Secretary of the Friends of Hove Lagoon…

West Hove Person…Sue Johnson Sue Johnson lives in Derek Avenue and is the Secretary of the Friends of Hove Lagoon. How long have you lived in West Hove? Nearly 9 years. We moved from Blackheath in 2012 and spent that summer surrounded by builders’ rubble and watching the Olympics on TV. Why did you volunteer to get involved with the Friends of Hove Lagoon? I put my hand up at the wrong time!! Seriously though, I had recently retired from 30 years in local government and I was keen to get involved in the local community in some way. The packed public meeting at the Big Beach Café in 2016 to set up a new Friends of Hove Lagoon group seemed ideal, particularly as I lived nearby. I haven’t regretted a single thing since.

Are you hoping to go ahead with LagoonFest this year?

Many people have expressed their wish for it to happen and lots want to volunteer, so that must count for something! Kingsway flats appeal allowed A decision last July by the council’s Planning Committee to refuse permission for a part-five part-eight storey block of 37 flats at 239-243 Kingsway, between Braemore Road and Berriedale Avenue, has been overturned by a Government planning inspector. The development by Agenda Homes will replace three two-storey houses, and 71 objections were received to the original application, with neighbours saying that they would lose considerable amounts of sunlight and the development would dwarf their properties. Hove MP Peter Kyle and Wish ward councillors also objected, although the council’s planning officer recommended approval of the application. Planning Inspector Guy Davies said in his appeal report that the proposed building at eight storeys would be comparable in scale to the nearest apartment blocks at Berriedale House and Braemore Court. He said it would be of a significantly larger scale than the existing buildings on the site but that such a contrast in scale is a feature of the apartment blocks along the seafront and the more domestic scale buildings around them. He acknowledged that the outlook from neighbouring properties would change significantly but considered that it would not have such an overbearing or dominant effect as to be harmful to the living conditions of neighbouring occupants.

19 West Hove news…

Rockwater beach bar on Kingsway has had its planning application for alterations, including a glazed first floor extension above their flat roof, approved by the council’s Planning Committee, despite an officer recommendation for refusal. Some other alterations were previously approved in 2020. the new roof would be only 2.8m higher than the existing roof. In the debate, all the committee councillors were very positive about the changes already made. Cllr Daniel Yates said the Babylon Lounge had been one of the ugliest things along Hove seafront, but the transformation of the site over the last year had been considerable and it was now a much more attractive place.

The planning officer’s report concluded that, while the principle of regenerating the property was supported, the additional height of the proposed roof extension would result in an overly prominent building that would contrast starkly with the other seafront buildings in the vicinity. However, 587 letters of support for the application were received by the council. The application was also supported by Peter Kyle MP as well as the West Hove Seafront Action Group. There were 38 letters of objection and the council’s Conservation Advisory Group objected, saying the additional height was unprecedented along this stretch of the seafront. The committee, meeting on 13th January, heard concerns over noise and anti-social behaviour from a representative of the Walsingham Road Residents’ Association, Ian Coomber. Westbourne ward councillors Carmen Appich and Chris Henry both spoke in favour of Rockwater. Chris Henry pointed out that

The committee voted by 8-1 to approve the application because of its social and economic benefits and because it is a positive addition to Hove seafront. Rockwater is currently closed, including the shacks, until Covid-19 restrictions are eased. Sadly, their igloo village on the lawn was damaged in December storms and the igloos are now being sold.

New mast approved... A planning application for a new phone mast in Portland Road, on the corner of Olive Road outside Portland Business Park, has been approved by the council. The 17.5m grey mast with associated equipment will provide 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G coverage for Telefónica users in the area and will replace an installation on the rooftop of the Saxon Works building in Olive Road.

21 This West Hove resident has been busy writing during lockdown…

Paul Murray of Langdale Road has recently published his first book, “Poached Eggs, Javelins, Easy Cash and Hangovers”. He tells us more… They say you come back to your roots which is certainly true in my case as, having been born in close proximity to Hove, l have now lived here for almost 20 years and my wife has lived here all her life. I followed three careers, as an insurance broker in London, Manchester and Liverpool, a service station manager and licensee on the M62 motorway, the M3 motorway and in Salisbury, and as a contract cleaning manager, which took me to all parts of England. Now, having retired in Hove Actually, I am embarking on my fourth career as a writer and l would say that the recent lockdown has given me the perfect opportunity to write the book that has been waiting to happen for years. Up until now l had only written for a few trade magazines and had some newspaper articles published, although when in Liverpool many years ago l wrote a show for what was called “Comedy Playhouse”. The idea here was that members of the public were invited to write a half hour show for television and if successful it could be turned into a series. I believe Steptoe & Son started this way. Unfortunately, when my script arrived the BBC told me they had run out of money and couldn’t use it. It was then confined to the bin by my then wife! I am hoping for better things with my book which deals with the four subjects mentioned in the title and, whilst it is written with tongue-in-cheek humour, all four are based on my life experiences and have been proven to work. The hope is that when adapted to people’s individual circumstances some of the findings will work for them too! At the very least it should

prove to be an amusing read. To follow this book l have plans to write a novel about a young man who inherits a large country house and goes on to find a book his grandfather wrote on the secret of long life. When he follows the book through, he reveals some very startling revelations and of course there is involvement of chickens and poached eggs!! I originally thought this would make a great suspense story as a TV serial but am reliably informed that there is virtually no chance of invading that market. Perhaps if the book were to be a success it could go on to be serialised. We can all dream! “Poached Eggs, Javelins, Easy Cash and Hangovers” is available from Amazon.

23 More information on their planting scheme from the Friends of Hove Lagoon…

Last month we shared some information about the Friends of Hove Lagoon’s planting scheme which hopes to be breaking ground this spring. Here are a couple more images which show the areas to be planted and the planting plan for the quadrant around the northern pavilion nearest to The Gather Inn.

For more details about the scheme and a few more images please go to our social media pages (details below). The Friends of Hove Lagoon would welcome any and all feedback, but specifically… 1.

What do you think of the choice of area to be planted?

2.

What do you think of the choice of plants/style of planting?

3.

Is there anything you would like to see added to or altered in the scheme?

4.

Do you think the planting scheme will improve the environment of Hove Lagoon?

5.

Do you think using local volunteers to maintain the planting is a good way of involving the local community?

For your questions and comments, or if you would like to get involved in the scheme as a volunteer, please contact: friendsofhovelagoon@gmail.com @LagoonHove (Twitter) @friendsofhovelagoonandfest (Instagram) https://www.facebook.com/FriendsHoveLagoon/ Sue Johnson Have a local editorial item? 24 Meet a local chocolate maker…

Poets Person…George Wellicome George Wellicome is a former pastry chef who opened his own handmade chocolate shop, the Brighton Cacao Company, at 115 Portland Road (near Rutland Road) in December. He also sells his chocolate online. Do you live in Hove? Yes I do. I live on Holland Road, by the sea which I love. How did you learn to make chocolate? I first learnt how to make chocolate whilst studying an intensive pastry course in London at Le Cordon Bleu. They have some of the best pastry chefs in the world to learn from, and they are incredibly knowledgeable. One of our teachers, called chef Olivier, was a huge inspiration to me. His skill level and his vast knowledge about chocolate, with such ease, he was able to create some of the most incredible products I have ever tasted. The passion, skill and knowledge that the chefs at Le Cordon Bleu possess made me want to learn more. The day after my first class I applied to work at an amazing chocolatier in London called Rococo Chocolates to expand my knowledge even further. Tell us more about your chocolate… We have some amazing chocolate that comes from all over the world, from South and Central America to Africa. We have a range of flavoured bars and individual chocolate truffles as well as bonbons. Some that are unusual pairings but they really work. Our USP for our chocolate is quality, and abnormal flavour pairing. I want to give people the wow factor when they try our chocolate. By using single origin chocolate, not only are we able to pair our chocolate with some unusual but satisfying flavours, we are also able to create a story behind the product, having reasons for why we pair certain flavours together.

What is your most popular product? The Pink Peppercorn and Himalayan Salt, and the Orange and Lime bars are amongst the most popular. We have a selection of individual chocolates which we change up each quarter. Our most popular individual chocolate is our hazelnut latte or our dark and stormy flavours (dark rum and ginger). How is it going so far? It has certainly been a rollercoaster of a year; despite the challenges, it has been incredible. Since opening the shop, we have had amazing and positive feedback. The main aim last year was to get to December and still have the shop. Going forward, we are hoping to start expressing ourselves more, and to continue to deliver high quality delicious products for everyone to enjoy. The Friends of Stoneham Park We can only hope that this coming year proves to be better than the one just departed. With vaccination underway, the pandemic that has affected all our lives we hope will be substantially mitigated within the next 12 months. What does that mean for us in the Friends of Stoneham Park? There is a chance, but nothing more than that, that we will be able to stage some events once the weather improves and the difficult winter months are behind us. If so, then we hope to have another go at holding the outdoor cinema and will contact those who won free tickets in the ballot back in September. If that works out well, then we may have some more screenings. Likewise, we might be able to hold an Easter egg hunt in the park come April, and this is under active consideration. If

But that is a long way off and there are, to borrow a phrase, many known unknowns and a good helping of unknown unknowns. Last month, we had a Zoom meeting at which, once again, we were pleased to welcome a new face. Matters for discussion included the general state of the park, litter, and fly-tipping. 29 News from Councillor Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward…

Wish Ward Councillor News

POETS CORNER

First to report this month is the outcome of the appeal for the refused planning application for an eight-storey building containing 37 flats at 239-243 Kingsway on the seafront between Braemore Road and Berriedale Avenue. The Planning Inspector allowed the appeal, despite neighbours, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I campaigning against. Across the road at Hove Lagoon, some good news is that repairs are underway to, or planned for, existing play equipment including the Kompan Supernova (raised roundabout) and Kompan Cyclops (large tripod with basket). A proper consultation is planned for early 2022 for full refurbishment in 2022/3. Garry and I pledge to campaign for equipment that can be used by kids with disabilities. A new skate park is planned too and of course the Friends’ wonderful planting scheme. Along similar lines, we are campaigning with the Friends of Wish Park for much better opening hours for the disabled toilet in Wish Park. Discussions with the new nursery in the Saxon Road pavilion also include lowering the new fence around the building and laying a path to replace access that has been lost through the old nursery’s play area. Progress for a new nature area in the south-west corner of Stoneham Park is ticking along. The Friends have taken the initiative to draw up plans which is fantastic. Garry and I have secured funds from the Council. It’s now a question of agreeing a design and a timeline. Just around the corner, working with Deborah Griffiths of Hove Juniors PTA, the new hedge with around 100 elaeagnus bushes is in place at the front of the school. It looks phenomenal but is not yet fully visible from the road. The aim is to tackle pollution and encourage biodiversity. We were delighted to allocate £2,000

from our ward budget for this cause (and allocate a further £2,000 for trees on Glebe Villas). At the bottom of Tamworth Road, we have worked closely with Tracy Stuart of the Neighbourhood Watch along with residents and traders to tackle fly-tipping. A new bin compound is now in place along with a pledge from the Council to install communal bins along Portland Road. Finally, congratulations to the volunteers at the rose garden on Ingram Crescent for their great work in recent months. As soon as the law allows, we’ll be organising another volunteer session to assist the Blooming Boundary Campaign on Boundary Road to get the planters there back in shape. 31 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Sussex County Cricket Ground Hotel Today the site of all this activity is an empty space containing some rubble and surrounded by hoardings, although it will soon be 37 luxury flats and a new pub. It’s in Eaton Road, just by the entrance to the Cricket Club, and used to be a pub called the Sussex Cricketers.

This photograph from c1952 (ref ARG/3/7284) is interesting as it shows the original Victorian villa, built about 1880, undergoing a major extension to the public bar. Rather than demolish and build again the builders are simply extending the boundary of the building at ground level before taking down the exterior walls to create a larger internal area. Later extensions at the side expanded the space further, and although some of the first floor was left untouched, the graceful romanesque windows and balcony, together with the original sign, were lost. Many additions and alterations had been carried out on the Cricket Ground Hotel since 1899, including the erection of various tea pavilions in the 1920s: Tamplins Brewery managed them all. However, this was the job which completely changed the building’s appearance at street level. It created an impersonal and anonymous introduction to the cricket ground, wiping out any indication of its rich history.

GENERAL

It wasn’t a particularly appealing building, made up of attachments and extensions tacked on to an older structure, but locals who have been monitoring its demolition over the past months have doubtless shared some regrets.

ground, accompanied by their bicycles, members of the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Then it became a military parade ground with a rifle range. In 1917 there was a stoolball match between wounded soldiers who had lost an arm and a team of ‘ancient lawyers’. The following years saw the county fairs, baseball matches, Girl Guide rallies, and, latterly, concerts and the occasional boxing match.

Perhaps we should thank the editor of the Evening Argus or Gazette for deciding to cover the extension to the Sussex County Cricket Ground Hotel that day in 1952. It’s not often that builders and their buildings It’s a history of surprises. Since its opening are captured during work in progress, and in 1872 the ground itself has been used for the image is particularly valuable now that many purposes, cricket often being last the work itself has disappeared from our on the list. 33 News from the council…

Vaccination scam alert

Bulky Waste Service

Some people have received suspicious calls, text messages and doorstep visits offering the Covid-19 vaccination. Some of these calls are asking for payments.

Brighton & Hove City Council has now taken control of its popular ‘bulky waste’ service.

All calls asking for payments are scams. Please ignore all such offers. GENERAL

The national vaccination programme is being run by the NHS. Nobody else. And it is free. The NHS will contact you to invite you for an appointment when it is your turn. To protect yourself and your family members from fraud and criminals, please remember that the NHS will not: • text you and ask you to enter personal details on a link • call you and ask you to press buttons on a keypad • ask for payment or for any bank details • ask to come to your home. If you receive a call you believe to be fraudulent, hang up and report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Please do not contact the NHS or turn up to get a vaccination before they contact you. The NHS is currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to people most at risk from coronavirus and those who work closest with them. These people include care home residents and staff, followed by people over 80 and health and social care workers. Other people will then be offered it in order of age and risk.

The service, which collects white goods and other big, unwanted household items, has been managed by the council and run by an outside contractor in recent years. However, the council has decided to totally operate the service which will increase revenue in the long run and help improve recycling rates. Any goods that can be reused will be made available to residents who are disadvantaged or on low incomes.

The service allows residents to get rid of large household items including furniture like tables and chairs, beds, mattresses, wardrobes and even upright pianos. The service allows residents to get rid of large household items including furniture like tables and chairs, beds, mattresses, wardrobes and even upright pianos. The council are also collecting electrical and kitchen equipment including washing machines, fridge freezers, cookers and TVs. The prices for collecting the goods remain the same. Booking can be made by calling 01273 290798.

35 Louise Peskett tells us about her new book on women’s history in Brighton and Hove…

The Fearless and the Fabulous Writer and tour-guide Louise Peskett created the popular Notorious Women of Brighton walks in 2013 to help people discover the rich women’s history around the city. She has now published a book, “The Fearless and the Fabulous, a Journey through Brighton and Hove’s Women’s History”. Tell us more about your book…

GENERAL

It takes the form of a journey around Brighton, stopping off at 90 sites of interest. I had the idea during the first lockdown as I thought it would give people the chance to do an interesting self-guided walk around town. People can also do the journey from their own armchairs of course. Who is your favourite woman in the book? I have great respect for them all as they each swam against the tide and forged new ground in different ways. I’m a great fan of Marguerite Patten, who lived in Withdean in later life and played such a great part in helping people in wartime make their rations go further by inventing recipes such as peapod soup and eggless cake. I became obsessed with collecting her 1970s recipe cards from eBay and now have some wonderful and colourful recipes for meals including jelly and luncheon-meat, sometimes in the same dish! I also love Pauline Crabbe who I met in the 1990s. Pauline wasn’t only a talented actress, becoming the first black actress to appear on British TV, she became a pioneering social worker, who changed the lives of many women for the better. What was the weirdest story?

of 1905, driving her car at a terrifying 79.75 mph down Madeira Drive. She was a secretary for Napier cars and was taught to drive because the management thought she‘d be useful eye-candy in publicity. It seems she ran with the brief a bit further than expected, triumphing in races all over Europe, setting water speed records and becoming one of the first women to pilot a plane!

Maybe Edith Tudor-Hart, who quietly settled down to run an antiques shop in the North Laine after a successful career, spying for the Soviet Union and playing a major part in the Cambridge Spy Ring. “The Fearless and the Fabulous” is available Or Dorothy Levitt who set a Ladies World from historywomenbrighton.com or contact Speed Record at the Brighton Speed Trials historywomenbrighton@outlook.com Have a local editorial item? 37 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Wildlife recording As (hopefully) we’re staring at the end of the third lockdown with a little more hope than we did six weeks ago, you may have started to notice changes in the outside world during your daily exercise. Meagre to begin with, the momentum of new life is beginning and reaching a crescendo through July before grinding to a halt again next December.

One of the positives of consecutive lockdowns is that people have used this opportunity to create, or rebuild a connection with nature... One of the positives of consecutive lockdowns is that people have used this opportunity to create, or rebuild a connection with nature that had been lost in the pre-Covid world by visiting open wild spaces or even spending more time in the garden. A way of cementing this bond beyond the restrictions is by recording the wildlife that you see or hear. Last year saw a huge increase in moth trapping, attracting moths to a bright light in order to count and identify them in the morning when they’re sleeping. This can be done by using purpose built traps, or as I tried before being told off by my partner, leaving the bathroom light on overnight with the window open. Moths are often dismissed as ‘boring

brown jobs’ but a closer look will see that they’re made up of intricate designs of a whole palette. And with the internet and social media, identifying moths to species is much easier. Making the record is also much easier thanks to the app iRecord. Simply create an account, press the big plus sign and type in the species you saw and the date. Your phone can use its GPS to put in the location automatically. Then all you need to do is press the big ‘Upload’ button and you’re finished! And it’s not just for moths. Biological records can be made for any animal, plant or fungus that you might see so you can tailor it to your own interests. Wildlife records are important for several reasons, really it’s just good fun trying to identify what you’ve seen. If you’re looking for a hobby that means you can keep going outside this year, start recording. Look at the Sussex Biological Recording Centre website for more info or get in touch. glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

39 News from Brighton and Hove Food Partnership…

Wasting food feeds climate change Did you know that throwing away food is one of the biggest contributors to climate change? 25-30% of global greenhouse gases are caused by food production, yet a third of all food produced is never eaten.

To highlight the impact that wasting food has on climate change, this year Brighton and Hove Food Partnership have launched a citywide food use campaign to get us feeding bellies and not bins. As well as a significant contributor to global warming, wasting food costs an average family of four around £720 a year. It’s the equivalent of losing a whole bag of lovely food on a weekly shop.

According to the national waste advisor WRAP, we wasted less food during lockdown. But there is some good news. According to the national waste advisor WRAP, we wasted less food during lockdown. Being at home more made us check in our fridges more often and use up our leftovers. We just need to keep up those good habits. It’s the easiest and cheapest way to help the environment.

1. Make a shopping list and meal plan before you shop. It’s never a good idea to go shopping when hungry as you tend to buy more than you need. 2. Chill the fridge out. Your fridge will keep food safer for longer if set between 2 and 5 degrees. 3. Freeze leftovers and things typically wasted like bread and milk. Food can be frozen right up to its ‘use by’ date. Make sure your freezer is below -18 degrees. Brighton and Hove Food Partnership will be organising citywide activities for the first ever national Food Waste Action Week from 1 – 7 March. Visit their website for more food use tips and find out how you can get involved. https://bhfood.org.uk If on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, join in the conversation and share your own food use tips by following @btnhovefood. Brighton and Hove Food Partnership recently led the city’s bid for the Gold Sustainable Food Places Award. We’re the first place in the UK to achieve this award.

Here are three tips that can make a big difference to the amount of food wasted in the home. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

GENERAL

In the UK, most food waste - 70% - is wasted in our homes. Every year we chuck 4.5 million tonnes of edible food into our bins together with all the precious resources it took to produce and transport it. The most commonly wasted foods include milk, bread, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and poultry.

43 News from the council on the city’s Climate Assembly…

A carbon neutral future In Brighton & Hove, a group of residents has been planning ahead, sharing their vision of a carbon neutral city in 2030 and how this could be achieved. Members of the innovative Climate Assembly have launched a series of recommendations on transport to steer the city towards its ambitious carbon neutral goal. The assembly brought together a diverse group of 50 people from across the city to learn about climate issues, discuss them with one another, and make recommendations about what should happen and how things should change. The assembly’s suite of measures are designed to tackle transport-related carbon emissions in the city. The ten recommendations aim to increase active travel around the city and expand healthier pedestrianised areas. They are ranked in the assembly’s own order of priority. • A car-free city centre

• Messaging should focus on what people gain rather than lose and educate or expand knowledge

• The public transport system should be affordable and accessible

• There should be a focus on incentives rather than sanctions as interventions.

Members of the assembly have asked the council to focus its efforts on making sure • The council should actively consult and there is no need for private car use (unless someone is disabled/has a blue badge). engage with the community • Creation of healthier low traffic or pedestrianised communities

• Introduce mobility hubs (recognisable places connecting up different types of travel – for example cycle hire, train station, parking and transport information) • Cyclists should be prioritised over cars through well-designed dedicated cycling networks that are safe and practical for day-to-day use as well as leisure • Introduce a ‘park & ride’ to minimise car use in the city • Make public transport a more convenient alternative to driving a car

The recommendations will be considered by the city council as part of planned work on transport and climate change. This work recognises that we should take into account everyone’s needs, allow some vehicle access and provide positive benefits for the whole city. A summary of the initial work on possible options for a Liveable City Centre and an expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone was due to be presented to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee on 19 January. A report on the council’s Carbon Neutral Plan will be brought to committee in March 2021.

ro-Caribbean heritage to have a seat at a committee for BHCC, combined with my professional background in business development and marketing, provides me with the opportunity to share ideas, opinions and issues from a perspective that may not have been previously highlighted or considered by decision makers. It is also an opportunity to challenge stereotypes that may have previously prevented people of colour from gaining access to powerful positions. I hope my position will encourage confidence in others who are passionate about their communities to represent and have a seat at the table. Are there any particular issues you hope to highlight? I think the Black Lives Matter Movement combined with the pandemic have highlighted many issues in terms of the injustices some experience more than others nationally and globally. My objective is to push for more opportunities and outcomes that support our community to move forward. I am keen to work on campaigns that support ‘un-marketing’ racism through celebrating culture, diversity and inclusion. I would like to encourage more networking and integration with the hope that this supports more diversity in business, education and politics.

What are your interests outside work? I like to keep busy! Even when I am not working, I am working; researching something of interest, collaborating with other creatives or trying to learn something new. I enjoy keeping active; prior to lockdown I would attend the gym regularly and walk whenever possible. I also love to travel and see the world for myself … I have really missed this in recent times. 47 News from the council…

Be alert for rogue builders With lockdowns, and holiday plans cancelled, many people have decided to make home improvements instead. This has resulted in complaints to Brighton & Hove Trading Standards about unscrupulous builders, who have either failed to carry out work or done a poor job. These include an elderly resident who responded to a flier through the door and paid £20,000 for roof repairs, which failed to stop the roof leaking.

For further advice, please contact the Building work in the home is currently allowed Citizens Advice Consumer Service under national lockdown rules with approprionline (citizensadvice.org.uk) or call on ate Covid-19 safety measures in place. 03454 04 05 06 or 0808 223 1133. Don’t get caught out: Follow these simple but important steps…

This information will be then be referred to trading standards.

1. Never employ anyone who cold calls at your home, and be wary if they can start immediately. 2. Make sure you get details of reliable accredited builders from approved trader schemes, for example the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme (buywithconfidence.gov.uk/ brighton-hove-city-council) 3. Always get written proof of what you and your builder have agreed to in the form of a contract, including: • Time scale for the work to be completed. • Payments in stages - never pay all the money up front. It’s also best to avoid paying in cash or by banker’s draft as you get no financial protection. 4. Check with the council’s Building Control and planning departments regarding building regulations and planning permission, as some consumers assume their builder or architect are dealing with this.

49 The council wants people’s views on new cycle lanes and other travel changes…

Consultation on new travel schemes Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee, meeting on 18th December, agreed to progress work on five new travel schemes to be delivered using Tranche 2 of the Active Travel Fund from the Government.

The council is using the Government’s Active Travel Fund to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic by providing safe access to walking and cycling routes. For Tranche 2 of this fund, the following schemes are proposed: • Old Shoreham Road A270 – continuation of temporary segregated cycle lanes from Hangleton Road to near the western city border • Kingsway / Wellington Road A259 – continuation of temporary segregated cycle lanes from Fourth Avenue to the west • London Road A23 – permanent upgrade of existing cycle lane to segregated cycle lanes and upgrades to key junctions • Western Road – permanent improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and bus users along this key corridor • Madeira Drive - work has begun on phase 1 – the road is now operating one-way eastbound following the full closure previously. Future works to be completed in phase 2 include provision of a cycle lane, increasing the number of blue badge bays, and changing the

GENERAL

They also approved a plan for meaningful public and stakeholder consultation on these schemes, prior to their implementation, as well as consultation on the Tranche 1 Active Travel schemes for the A259 seafront road and the A270 Old Shoreham Road cycle lanes. In addition, the committee agreed the proposed terms of reference for a new Active and Inclusive Travel Forum.

orientation of pay & display parking – the scheme is being delivered under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order and will therefore be consulted on separately to the other schemes. A six-week period of public and stakeholder consultation will start no later than 1st February for the first four schemes. The outcomes of the consultation will then be presented to the ETS Committee, alongside final scheme proposals which will have been influenced by the consultation responses. The consultation will include an online questionnaire, leaflets to be sent to properties directly affected and postcards to be sent to a wider area of properties affected. There will also be public opinion surveys and information circulated to those not directly affected and to stakeholders and community groups, who will be invited to join online sessions. 51 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

5 easy steps to improve gut health Has food become the enemy in your quest for health? I’m often asked by clients what is the most important habit to have in order to have great digestion. You might think I would recommend you cut out dairy or gluten, but one of the most ignored and important ways to improve digestion is to eat the right way.

GENERAL

What do I mean by that? Take time, breathe, appreciate and respect what you’ve spent time, effort and money putting on your plate and enjoy every morsel - mindfully. Why should you eat mindfully? First: slowing down your meals and being fully present will make a big difference to the amount you eat. This will ease digestion and allow your gastric acid and enzymes to work more efficiently. Second: when you eat mindfully, you are more aware of the tastes, texture, smells and appearance of your food and this might fill you up with gratitude – a far more positive way to view food. Third: gratitude will trigger the release of endorphins and other ‘feel good’ hormones that will help nourish your entire being not just physically but also emotionally and spiritually. Food will become your ally, no longer the enemy. So how do you achieve this state of ‘food nirvana’? 1.

2.

Pause and check how you feel - if upset, stressed, rushed etc, don’t eat. Only eat when you can take your time and feel relaxed. Breathe through your gut before eating to instantly relax and trigger the production of enzymes and acids in your body that allow digestion to take place.

3.

Slow down your meals to 20 minutes. This will help you feel when you’re almost full and avoid overeating.

4.

Put down your fork: between each mouthful to help you slow down further.

5.

Engage every sense: to help you feel completely appreciative and aware of your body, your food, the present moment.

Starting with these great habits before you even consider eliminating any ‘suspected’ food will not only help prepare your digestive system to tolerate and enjoy most foods, it will also give you a sense of peace and appreciation that will impact your whole life. Do this without moderation! Nathalie Sansonetti, Nutritional Therapist & Health Coach Want support to achieve your 2021 health goals? 53 BSUH Charity launches Valentine’s campaign to spread love for NHS staff…

Show some Valentine’s love for local NHS staff January seemed never ending and February isn’t providing much relief. Everyone is feeling the effects of an extremely challenging 2020, and a tough start to 2021.

Here at BSUH Charity, we wanted to launch a feel-good campaign to try and lift the mood of local NHS staff in whatever small way we can. At BSUH Charity, we are dedicated to raising money for all wards and departments across BSUH NHS Trust’s four hospitals: The Royal Sussex County Hospital, The Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, The Sussex Eye Hospital and Princess Royal Hospital. We are inviting the local community to share their words of thanks, positivity and love with staff across the hospitals, by sending Valentine’s cards. The public can support this via two routes: 1.

2.

Get creative! Make and send your own Valentine’s card to the charity for the NHS (post or e-mail). We will then share these with staff. Get selective! Choose one of our card designs that we will print and share on your behalf.

The cards are general messages of love and support to BSUH staff as a whole, rather than individuals. We will share it with staff and patients across all of our hospitals. It’s time for an ‘injection’ of love and warmth and we’d love as many local people to be involved as possible. We would like to remind staff that people really care and value them. There is no charge, but if you would like to make a donation to BSUH Charity Covid-19 campaign (www.justgiving.com/campaign/ helpbsuh) that would be very welcome. This

will help us to look after the long-term wellbeing of NHS staff working to keep us safe during this pandemic. Also, please do share work in progress images as you make your cards, so we can share on our social media channels. 55 Admission numbers are to be reduced for nine schools across the city…

School Admission Numbers Brighton & Hove City Council’s Children, Young People & Skills Committee, meeting on 11th January, approved a reduction in school places across the city.

GENERAL

The council held a public consultation in the autumn on a plan to reduce the total number of school places across the city by 360 for the academic year starting in September 2022, because of predictions of a large number of surplus places, which could lead to some schools facing financial problems. The Published Admission Numbers (PAN) of nine schools in the city will now be reduced as follows: •

Balfour Primary School from 120 to 90 pupils

Benfield Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils

Brunswick Primary School from 120 to 90 pupils

Downs Infant School from 120 to 90 pupils

Goldstone Primary School from 90 to 60 pupils

Moulsecoomb Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils

Stanford Infant School from 90 to 60 pupils

West Blatchington Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils

Hove Park School and Sixth Form from 300 to 180 pupils.

Sue had always been a great supporter of the Albion, and Donatello’s is woven into the fabric of the club - both literally and metaphorically. As shirt sponsor, they supported the club in some of its toughest times and have remained as a loyal backer ever

Sue was well-known throughout the city for her charity work. Donatello, in the Lanes, is a family business, now run by her three sons. The restaurant had sponsored Brighton & Hove Albion’s shirts in the past and was very popular with footballers as well as other celebrities and politicians down for the party conferences. The many charities Sue supported include Brighton Housing Trust and the Martlets. Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom said: “Everyone at the club was devastated to learn the

There was barely a positive event, campaign or good cause without Sue being part of making it happen. She made great food accessible to all, was a brilliant businesswoman, and just thoroughly decent.”

Lighthouse has launched an online public survey and series of short films - Let’s Talk Public Art to encourage residents and communities across Brighton & Hove to voice their opinion about public art in the city. Commissioned as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s 10-year Public Art Strategy, the community consultation will inform the framework for the council’s policy, ensuring the city’s diverse residents, neighbourhoods, their narratives, histories and experiences are equally reflected. Lighthouse want to hear your thoughts and are hosting a free public meeting online, led by Dom Bailey, Chair of Brighton Experience Group. The informal event is open to anyone who wants to listen in or voice their opinion: Let’s Talk Public Art - Digital Campfire: 10am to 12 noon, Fri 5 February 2021 To take part in the survey, watch the films or register for the event visit: lighthouse.org.uk/events/ lets-talk-about-public-art
