WEST HOVE

One silver lining has been, however, an awakening of the sense of community amongst many people - the idea that man is not an island but part of something much bigger and how one’s neighbour is doing is actually an extension of how we ourselves are doing. It is an approach that amongst the disruption and upset has actually led to many great community initiatives. Once a vaccine is rolled out and life hopefully returns to near normal, let’s remember that valuable lesson learnt in 2020.

So finally 2020 comes to an end and what a challenging time it has been. So many fundamental changes to virtually everybody’s lives with lots of upheaval and worry.

Autumn in the Copse Our plans for the first scheduled work day for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse (since the first lockdown) were enthusiastically received last month, and a hand-picked elite band of six volunteers were nominated to clear paths, move fallen branches, check planted shrubs, all self-tooled and operating within social distance guidelines. With cruel coincidence, the selected date was November the fifth, the first day of Lockdown 2.0, as it is known. So no work day. The housekeeping of Three Cornered Copse remains un-started as we wait for the lifting of social restrictions. In the meantime, autumn has definitely arrived, bringing the fabulous colours of beech trees and of course, the mud. A particularly wet November has rendered several of the paths only navigable by the more sure-footed of our visitors. The plans of the Toads Hole Valley development, recently published with amendments, may have a solution to the mud problem. One of our members has spotted proposals for the “Provision and improvement of pedestrian and cycle access through Three Cornered Copse

(may include the provision of hot rolled asphalt surfacing) to improve sustainable access to and from the Development.” The purpose is to provide a path for cyclists and pedestrians from the top of the copse down to Hove Park, so our new neighbours in Toads Hole Valley can quickly access its facilities “providing opportunities for exercise”. This is explained as an alternative to providing “sport/ recreation” on the Toads Hole Valley site. There’s also a proposal to provide a path across the corner at the top of the copse between Dyke Road Avenue and King George VI Avenue. Details can be found in the documents on the planning website. (Look for the document titled BH2018_03633-EIA_MITIGATION_-_SUMMARY_ OF_CHANGES_TO_SCHEME-15908759.pdf) We have lived with several plans to build paths through the copse over the years, but none have actually materialised, presumably for budget reasons. At one point there was a clearly defined bridle path through the woods, for horses to use, but this has become overgrown and is quite narrow in places. Whether the new proposals will be accepted remains to be seen. Certainly controversial, for there are those that view the copse as a precious wild green space at the edge of our city, that should have no kind of development of this type. As the end of the year approaches, we hope for some bright cold days to have our final work day for 2020. Have a very peaceful Christmas, from The Friends of Three Cornered Copse. Simon Baxendale

6 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…

Where are we with Toads Hole Valley? I am conscious as I write this that we are coming out – hopefully as planned – of Lockdown 2.0 and that all of you and yours are safe and well. On Toads Hole Valley, as you know, I had been pushing for some months now, with officers and with the developers, on better engagement and information sharing with the residents of Hove Park. The last meaningful consultation happened in November 2018. Hove Park person…Nick Powell Nick Powell lives in the Hove Park area. For 20 years he ran Ricochet, a Brighton-based TV company, making programmes such as Supernanny and Escape to River Cottage. He sold the company in 2013, allowing him time to pursue other interests, and he has now written his first illustrated children’s book, Poppy Goes Wild. What have you been doing post Ricochet? I have become involved with some fantastic ventures…including Snow Camp, a Hove based charity which uses snow sports to inspire change in young people trapped by inner city life…and a craft brewery called Ibex in the French Alps…a great excuse to go skiing and to drink plenty of beer. Tell us about Poppy Goes Wild… Poppy is a plucky, nature loving young girl on a mission to save her grandad’s farm by returning the countryside to how it was 50 years ago, when wild flower meadows flourished, otters raced and kingfishers swooped through the idyllic landscape. Poppy is unstoppable in her efforts to encourage long lost wildlife to return. Why did you decide to write about rewilding? I was born in the 60s, since when much of our wildlife has disappeared, largely due to pollution and the mass use of pesticides in farming. In a fun way, I wanted to engage readers in the 5-9 age range with the magic of nature on their doorstep, and for them to learn how they can help to return wildlife and to safeguard its future. What do you think we should be doing in the city to encourage rewilding? I would love every park and green space to have a rewilding area and for every school to plant a wild flower patch and install a pond. And if we all cast wild flower seeds in our gardens and window boxes,

the city would be humming to the wonder of more birds, bees, butterflies and dragonflies than we could have imagined. Where is your favourite local spot to enjoy nature? Anywhere on the South Downs, and anywhere where I can find a wild flower, so that’s plenty of local spots. I love to go mountain biking from Ditchling Beacon, stopping to watch skylarks soaring and kestrels hovering, before moving on to the gorgeous wild flower meadows of Malling Down. Poppy Goes Wild by Nick Powell is published by Little Steps Publishing and is available in local bookstores and online at Waterstones and Amazon.

WWII – The Long Road Home

Rockwater Igloo Village

“Charlie’s Letters”, a film by young film director Elliott Hasler from West Hove, is now available across digital platforms and on DVD under its new title “WWII – The Long Road Home”.

Rockwater beach bar on West Hove seafront now has an igloo village on the lawn, where customers can sit in groups of up to six people in their own heated plastic igloo.

The film was completed when Elliott was just 16 and is based on his great-grandfather’s experience of escaping a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy during World War Two, with his wife and young son anxiously awaiting news back in Brighton. The film originally premiered at the Brighton Fringe in 2017. Elliott, now 20, is currently filming his second feature film, “Vindication Swim”, while also in his final year of a history degree at Exeter University. It’s another true story – this time about Mercedes Gleitze, a native Brightonian who was the first British woman to swim the English Channel. “WWII – The Long Road Home” is now available from: Asda, Tesco and Morrisons, Sky Store, iTunes, Amazon and HMV (certificate: 15).

Your igloo will light up red if you need service, with an option to order from an app, and there is a speaker for atmospheric music. The menu includes hot dogs, stews and much more, and there are plenty of vegan options available. Sadly, the igloo village had to close due to the lockdown shortly after its opening at the end of October, but it’s proving very popular and Rockwater hope to reopen it in December. (Their takeaway shacks have remained open.) To book or see the menu, visit www.rockwaterigloovillage.co.uk.

Christmas at St Leonard’s Church St Leonard’s is planning to hold the following Christmas services, if restrictions are lifted: Midnight Mass at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve and Christmas Morning Holy Communion at 9.30am. 12 Meet the founder of SML College…

West Hove person…Ian Cunningham Ian Cunningham lives in West Hove and runs Self Managed Learning College (SML College) in Fishersgate. He has recently published a book on Self Managed Learning. What is Self Managed Learning? Young people decide for themselves what they want to learn, how they want to learn and why they want to learn. They are supported by a caring community of 36 other students (aged 9-16) and an experienced staff team. There is no curriculum, no imposed timetable (students create their own) and there are no classrooms or formal lessons. The approach has been used for over 40 years with many of the largest businesses, local authorities, Government departments and hospitals and been the subject of extensive academic research. How did you come to set up SML College? Given the success of SML with organisations, I was asked to help to introduce it in schools in other countries. I was then persuaded to set up something locally. Having started in community centres we moved to my house (then in Preston Park) with 12 students and three staff. From there we moved to the Brighton Youth Centre (with 18 students) and then to Fishersgate three years ago.

How do your students fare once they’ve left?

We have independent academic research showing that our ex-students move on to satisfying careers - usually via further education or sixth form college. Those that don’t continue in education seem to end up in high level jobs at an early age – for example, before the age of 21 being What sort of students use the college? an events manager or head of IT for a The students encompass the whole range company. of academic abilities and social classes What do you like to do relax? 15 News from Councillor Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward…

Community planting schemes – especially those involving trees – have been a major priority for Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and me over the past few years. Joining other local success stories such as the Secret Garden and the reinvigorated Ingram Crescent rose garden is a delightful project at Hove Junior School – where the playground meets hectic Portland Road and pollution is a real issue. We have worked closely with Deborah Griffiths of the school’s PTA for over one year now to raise funds for a new hedge to take pride of place behind the school’s tall black railings. Its purpose is to absorb pollution, increase biodiversity and improve visual amenity. We know that pollution is an issue by the way because Deborah and I tested it personally! The hope is that the hedge will soon be thick enough to allow the removal of the black netting that covers the railings presently. Deborah has been great in pushing the project forward. Raising funds hasn’t been easy; not

least because a deep fortified trench had to be dug. The work has now been carried out by J Davies Building Ltd and around 100 fine specimens of elaeagnus from English Woodlands are ready to go in. The project wouldn’t have been possible without financial support and for that we must thank Elaine Evans, Hove Civic Society, Sussex CPRE, the West Hove Forum and James Ridsdale from dataJAR. Garry and I also contributed our £2,000 annual ward budget to the scheme. The Council is taking an incredibly long time to get on with nearby projects for which we have raised funding such as on School Road and in Stoneham Park. Some good news is that we recently met with the Council’s experienced tree officer to test under-street services for conflicts with tree-planting on Glebe Villas. The street can accommodate trees which means that the project can proceed in principle. I’m also delighted to report that we have distributed 90 rowans and silver birches to Wish Park, the Secret Garden and Ingram Crescent rose garden. They were given to us by TV gardener Kate Bradbury who, in turn, received them from the Woodland Trust. We soon hope to publicise the long-awaited Hove Lagoon planting scheme and several other fun local projects. We hope that everybody is safe and well at this troubling time and urge any Wish resident with any issues to get in touch. Cllr Robert Nemeth, Wish Ward Robert.Nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

16 A lovely tribute by Pedal People to a well-loved local resident…

Remembering Eileen Odom (Sept 1928 – Feb 2020) On Monday 9 November, Pedal People Brighton honoured the life of local personality Eileen Odom with a trishaw ride from the Lagoon to Madeira Drive.

Eileen (left) and Brenda (right) enjoying their trishaw rides with volunteer cycle pilot Simon

A service in March to celebrate Eileen’s life was postponed because of Covid-19 rules, and we hoped to encourage friends to mourn by cheering at the trishaw ride on the promenade. Sadly we were not allowed to do that under the new lockdown rules.

Aldrington, understanding the need to keep people together in difficult times. In later years she loved to say that she was the ONLY life member of the Hove Horticultural Society! She always enjoyed opportunities to be outside in a garden or at her beach hut.

Eileen loved her weekly trishaw expeditions as she could go to places she remembered from her 80 years as a Hove resident. She moved to Poets Corner when WWII broke out, going to Davigdor School and then working at Lipton’s Grocers in George Street. She brought up her daughters Maureen and Sheila living behind the watchmaker and jewellers in Boundary Road, and became Guide Captain and Ranger Leader at 7th Hove (Aldrington) and Commissioner for West Hove. She encouraged many young women to achieve their potential.

She loved the adventure of travel and visited China, Australia and New Zealand, and back-packed across the USA carrying her important wedding hat in a box! Her travelling companion, Brenda Wells, was our representative on the memorial trishaw ride.

She was a member of the church family and church warden at St Leonard’s,

Eileen’s daughters, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were unable to cheer the trishaw on its way because of Covid restrictions. We think many local people have memories of Eileen and would have wished to be there too. Maureen Knight and Sheila Chapman (Eileen’s daughters)

Sea Cadets don’t let Covid-19 stop them Despite having to suspend weekly parades, boating activities, courses and offshore voyages, the Hove & Adur Sea Cadet unit at Marmion Road (and the wider Royal Navy family in general) really stepped up their efforts to support their young people this year. POETS CORNER

They made an incredible investment to keep their Junior Cadets, Senior Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets engaged during these difficult times. As the world moved online, 85% of units provided ‘Virtual Sea Cadet’ training, along with grants for cadets who needed help to access a computer. The focus was on maintaining the mental health of cadets through multiple channels: • Video tips on handling isolation from two Royal Navy submariners. • Regular challenges and activities. • Video tours of the offshore vessels and from across the Royal Navy. • National courses were remastered for online delivery.

• A ‘Virtual Summer of Adventure’ to replace offshore cruises.

• Weekly Chaplaincy videos from around the country.

• An online Junior Cadet Summer Camp.

• Weekly emails to parents and cadets on the Sea Cadet Covid-19 response from the Captain Sea Cadets (Captain Phil Russell RN) with local updates from the Area Officer (Commander Trevor Price RN). They also ensured that the cadets didn’t miss out on opportunities for personal development and progression by: • Alternative Duke of Edinburgh achievements. • Putting the Junior Sea Cadet training programme online. • Weekly Zoom training to keep cadets connected.

Through the hard work of the adult volunteers, Hove & Adur earnt a Burgee from the Captain Sea Cadets, as they were one of the first units to complete the extra preventative measures to resume sailing, powerboating and rowing in Southwick Ship Canal. They even managed to return to parading until Wave II struck. Their efforts enabled the cadets to continue their progression, with numerous qualifications and promotions being earnt, several Junior Cadets even achieving the coveted “Commodore’s Pennant”, the highest award for a Junior Cadet. As they embrace the new normal, it’s onwards and upwards for this great organisation.

• Specialist online STEM sessions in marine engineering and computing.

Sea Cadets is a national youth charity, working with 15,000 young people between 10 and 18 years old across the UK.

• Quizzes and competitions to win offshore voyages on one of their five training ships.

23 A brilliant new map to celebrate local businesses…

Portlandia Traders Group We’ve been fortunate to see many new varied businesses open up in the last 24 months along Portland Road and in the Poets Corner area. The benefits of this will be felt locally. Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent shop means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. This is simply because the nearby shop owners and their employees, who you are spending your money with, will then spend that money within the local community themselves, thus recirculating the money. Small, local businesses are surprisingly the largest employer of jobs nationally (60%). Not only this, but local employers are more likely to pay a higher average wage than their commercial chain counterparts. Popping out to your local gift shop, florist, restaurant or café builds familiarity with a friendly ‘hello’ and a little small talk. Independent means variety, choice and added character to an area and yes, home-owners who live near high streets with thriving independent businesses benefit from a boost in property value too. Best of all, a thriving local high street makes your area a great place to live! With funding support from the Economic Development Team at Brighton & Hove City Council, Portland Road and Poets Corner traders have collaborated to produce a map by talented illustrator Lisa Holdcroft. This celebrates all the businesses in the Portlandia area, showcasing the breadth and variety on offer and that everything you need is in one place this Christmas and

beyond and right on your doorstep! The variety and diversity of the Portlandia area has been improving over the last few years; lockdown is having a huge impact on independents, shop local and help maintain the quality of the local area. We hope the new map shows the breadth of services available on your doorstep and will encourage you to shop local and help maintain the momentum of improvement. The message this December (and beyond) from all the businesses of Portlandia is, Love Your Area. Shop Local, Stay Local, Enjoy Local and we hope the map will enable you to explore more of the independently owned businesses in this area. The map will be distributed through The Hovarian, but extra copies will be available from the Portlandia traders featured. Portlandia Traders Group

The Friends of Stoneham Park Here we are again in another lockdown. Luckily, Stoneham Park has remained open, or at least for the most part.

POETS CORNER

One thing that never changes, of course, is the passing of the seasons. In the last month I have seen plenty of squirrels scampering up trees and darting along the park’s perimeter fences and walls. Fungus, which always seems to put in an appearance at this time of year, has sprouted up along the decaying roots of now-gone mighty elms. And, of course, parts of the ground are presently almost completely covered in fallen leaves. The few leaves that are left still attached to the trees are yellow and orange and, before long, we will be in winter again.

It seems surreal to recall that the park first locked down at the back end of last winter, with spring, summer, and most of autumn now behind us.

29 News from Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum…

Vision for a new Hove Station Quarter

But the Plan is already having an impact. Early in the New Year the Council will consult the public on its draft Hove Station Master Plan. This will provide detailed planning guidance on the implementation of the policies of both the City Plan and the Neighbourhood Plan. Para 1.4 states that ‘The vision of this document is to transform the wider masterplan area into a successful mixed-use Hove Station Urban Quarter.’ Sounds familiar? Para 2.14 accurately quotes the Neighbourhood Plan’s overall aim to ‘facilitate the regeneration of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Area in a way which realises its potential by creating a vibrant and inclusive community, focused on a new Hove Station Quarter, as a great place to live, work and relax’.

for the delivery of what is now a shared vision. How many new dwellings will the Council accept in the proposed medium to highrise redevelopment of the Conway Street area, bearing in mind that 218 have already been approved for the Hove Gardens project which will begin construction in the New Year? Given that the Council is a major landowner in the area how many will be genuinely affordable? Will the Hove Gardens example of essentially car-free development be replicated in the rest of the area? Will the Council commit to investing a fair share of the developers’ cash contributions in and around the new Hove Station Quarter?

Finally, will the Master Plan emphasise the need for a new traffic management and parking plan to ensure that the construction of some 1300-1400 new dwellings, combined with 500 plus in Toads Hole, will not deliver a Hove Station Quarter free of ‘rat-runs’ but bounded by increasingly The Master Plan fully commits to our policy congested roads? of the coordinated redevelopment of the Mike Gibson Conway Street area with improved links Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan over and under the railway to the major Co-ordinator Council-approved developments of over 1000 dwellings to the north. It draws on and develops a variety of specific Neighbourhood Plan proposals, including a major upgrade of our proposed Community Hubs - the Honeycroft area and the immediate environs of the station. Thus the Council has adopted the Neighbourhood Plan vision of a new integrated urban quarter which straddles the railway line. Put simply, the local community’s vision for the future has now been adopted as the Council’s vision.

31 Meet a local resident who’s published a book on adoption…

Local person…Sarah McGeough Sarah McGeough lives in Artists Corner. She has just published her first book, “Eddy Finds a Family”, to help children understand the concept of adoption. How long have you lived in the Artists Corner area? POETS CORNER

We moved from London to Hove in December 2019, a week before Christmas. It was a little manic to say the least but it was certainly the best decision we have ever made. It felt like home straight away. Why did you decide to write a book? Since adopting our son, I always felt I would like to write a book to describe our journey as a family. One day through lockdown I was scrolling on Facebook and found Michael Heppell’s Write That Book group and decided to join. I connected with so many wonderful and supportive people who have been my cheerleaders all the way. I then joined the Masterclass and it really did change my life. Interestingly I had never contemplated a children’s book but then everything clicked into place. Tell us more about “Eddy Finds a Family” … It takes a sensitive and emotional subject and makes it fun and engaging for children to enjoy. Flossy and Frank Flamingo are unable to have a chick of their own. Eddy Emu is in foster care and in need of a loving home. It’s a heart-warming story about adoption that follows their journey as they find each other and become a family. What did your son think about the book? I have had great pleasure in reading ‘Eddy Finds a Family’ to my son. He has been my chief editor, asking questions about the characters and commenting on the draft illustrations. It has been wonderful for him

to have such involvement in creating my first book. Having a child’s perspective has helped fine-tune the story and illustrations so I have confidence it will appeal to many children. Where in Hove do your family like to go (when there’s no lockdown!)? Our son loves Sea Life and he insists we go at least once a month. We adore living by the sea now so take every opportunity to walk down to the beach, splash in the water and enjoy the view. We also love visiting the local wetlands and nature reserves, although we are still yet to see a kingfisher. A special hardback limited edition of “Eddy Finds A Family” is now available to buy at www.theflamingofamily.co.uk or email eddy@theflamingofamily.co.uk.

34 Congratulations to David Bowden…

Get your Christmas tree collected and recycled for charity…

David Bowden awarded MBE...

Christmas tree recycling

David Bowden of Woodland Drive, Hove, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours, for services to cricket and the community in Sussex.

The Brighton and Hove Soiree Rotary Club, in partnership with Mishon Mackay, will arrange to collect and recycle your Christmas tree for a minimum donation of £5.

David has dedicated nearly 50 years of service to Sussex Cricket, Preston Nomads CC and the Aldridge Cricket Academy. He was elected President of Sussex Cricket in 2015/2017 and was the first chairman of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, the charity which runs activities for the community. He was also made a “National Lifetime Achiever” by the England & Wales Cricket Board in 2016. Professionally, David served as District General Manager of Brighton & Hove Health Authority between 1975 and 1991. Since retiring in 2000, he has been chair of the Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals and also the Sussex Air Ambulance Board. David was naturally thrilled when he received notice of the award, but said that he is humbled by such recognition as his various involvements have given him much joy and enabled him to meet many great people along the way. He is most grateful of all to his wife, Pauline, whose advice, support and patience have been indispensable.

A full 100% of the donation will go towards Rotary-supported local charities. So, no more pine needles in your car, and every tree is recycled safely into soil improver or compost. Please go to our website to book your tree collection at: http://bit.ly/ HSR-Xmas Please leave your tree outside by 9am on Thursday 7 January and leave the rest to us.

David has yet to hear if and when he will be invited to Buckingham Palace to receive his medal, bearing in mind the huge backlog of such ceremonies caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. To advertise to 12,000 HOVE homes visit www.brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk or call 01273 551021

Planning applications and appeals The planning system can appear confusing and daunting. Mention the word ‘planning’ and it is often met with a roll of the eyes followed by a story that does not end well – normally a refusal notice, withdrawn application or a completed development that bears limited resemblance to the applicant’s initial dream.

At CMK Planning we aim to make your experience with the system as streamlined as possible. We provide our clients with a plain English, realistic professional opinion, whether you want to consider a new residential extension, explore maximising the development potential of your site, or

engage CMK Planning to appeal a refusal for your bespoke dream home. We are committed to assisting you with a clear and realistic way forward. On behalf of our clients, we have a proven track record in securing planning permissions and winning appeals and this has been consistently demonstrated in 2018, 2019 and 2020. If you would like to book an informal consultation with our director, Colm McKee MRTPI, please email info@cmkplanning.com We look forward to hearing from you.

CMK Planning is an independent planning practice with a proven track record in successful planning appeals and securing planning permissions. We draw on a range of expertise within the built environment sectors including chartered architects (RIBA) and conservation specialists. From minor to major, we can help you navigate all aspects of the planning system.

Rightly or wrongly, ‘town planning’ has traditionally conjured up images of red tape, clipboards and site notices. The recent ‘relaxation’ of planning rules has not necessarily helped and, it appears, introduced some further confusion. Additional changes are on the horizon.

Hove storms

GENERAL

It might be December – and snow is still the traditional theme – but we’re much more familiar with this type of weather during the festive season!

This photograph of Hove promenade on the morning after a storm was taken during the late 1930s (ref ARG/3/3059). Conditions are still horrendous as we can see the five council workmen struggling against the wind and rain as they try to clear away the pebbles and seaweed that have washed up onto the pavement. Four of them have formed a phalanx in order to give a greater push to the shovels! We can just about make out the rest of Hove and Brighton seafront, and the West Pier, in the mist. Although the image is over 80 years old, it’s instantly recognisable to anyone familiar with Hove. Very little seems to have changed, although standing here today you would see Flag Court in the gap between Courtenay Gate and the building on the corner of Medina Terrace. But there are the same lampposts, seafront railings, and – dare it be said – benches, although the benches have been moved nearer to the sea wall. Today’s promenade is heavily marked with double yellow lines, public information notices, instructions and cycle lanes. There are larger refuse bins, which

is just as well, as the wire mesh container hung on the rail is definitely not up to twenty-first century waste! To the right there’s a good view of Hove’s beach jetty, probably built at least thirty years before this photograph was taken. An ornamental shelter now takes up most of the space but in August 1920 it was the perfect viewpoint for watching Hove Regatta. Images from the archive of Thomas Wiles (AMS 7312), a photographer living in Newtown Road, Hove, show the beaches and promenade packed with families dressed in their best and eagerly watching the yachts. In 1920 the event featured three seaplanes which offered flights to the public. During a race later that afternoon one of them came down spectacularly into the sea and was written off. Fortunately, no one was hurt! Looking at this image, it’s hard to imagine that anything like a regatta could even be dreamt of in such wild surroundings. But we know better. That’s part of the delight of living in Hove! www.thekeep.info

41 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Slugs and snails! What has loads of teeth but only one foot? It’s less a riddle than a nerdy question, and one that is pointless as the title of the article rather gives it away. But as well as those trivial titbits, I hope to begin changing the perception behind at least some of the slugs and snails we share our gardens with.

GENERAL

The most common species is the boringly, but appropriately, named Garden Snail (pictured). I would bet almost anything on this snail being present in the garden of anybody receiving this copy of The Hovarian! Being generalists and plucky animals to boot, snails have done extremely well for themselves in human-dominated habitats being able to adjust from damp woodland habitats to gardens with relative ease.

I would bet almost anything on this snail being present in the garden of anybody receiving this copy of The Hovarian! For those with native woody plants in your gardens such as Hawthorn, Field Maple or Blackthorn you may have a slightly more odorous visitor, the Garlic Snail. The shell of this snail is a flattened disc and, should you feel inclined to poke it, it emits a strong garlicky aroma. However, this is not the famous snail of continental cuisine. That mantle is worn by the unfortunate Roman Snail, introduced to Britain during Roman occupation and, due to its apparent demand from restaurants, it is now protected by law in the UK. The last species I’m going to talk about is the Leopard Slug. Although relatively stream-lined, it isn’t particularly fast and spends most of its time eating algae, fungi and dead plant material… yum. However, if it’s lucky enough to find a bit of tasty carrion it won’t say no and research has shown

that the presence of this slug in a garden reduces the dominance of species more likely to eat your prized cabbages, so it’s one to keep around. I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned this yet, but slugs and snails are hermaphrodite meaning they possess both male and female reproductive organs. Mating can be a painful experience for snails that use the misleadingly delicately named ‘love dart’. It’s more of a spear that is stabbed into the prospective mate through the foot injecting a dose of hormones that increase the chance of successful reproduction. I’ll leave the final word on slugs to David Attenborough. Go to YouTube and search ‘leopard slug mating’ and I’ll promise you’ll not be disappointed (but maybe disgusted). glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

43 YMCA DownsLink ask if you can help a vulnerable young person this Christmas…

Love in a Box... We all want to feel loved at Christmas. This year, more than ever, we need your help. YMCA DownsLink Group is the biggest youth homelessness charity in the South East; every night we provide a safe home to 763 vulnerable young people. Many of those are in Brighton & Hove. After such a tough year, we want to make sure everyone we look after in 24-hour supported accommodation receives a personal present, so they feel the love and care many of us take for granted. Around 30% of the young people living with us are care leavers, so don’t have family to go back to for Christmas.

Covid-19 has added a new complexity. Not only are a lot of our young people struggling financially because they have lost jobs and income, but many have been feeling isolated and lonely. Love in a Box started in Brighton & Hove. Businesses, schools and organisations across the city were asked to fill shoe boxes with gifts for young residents in our supported housing for Christmas Day. It was an overnight success, our residents were delighted to have presents to open, but also to feel the love and care of their local community. It has grown to be an annual, organisation-wide, campaign.

45 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

Fall in love with food again It’s understandable that gut sufferers will often blame food for their digestive issues. After all, we seem to react quickly to specific foods after eating. Or do we? What started the myth around ‘food is the enemy’ is our misconception that food isn’t important. We are mostly disconnected from cause and effect when it comes to what we put into our bodies, to the point where some of my clients are baffled about their painful guts while continually drinking soft drinks (for example).

What may be causing you to have difficulties digesting is everything around food. That includes the way you eat, how you feel about the food you’re about to eat, how much stress and anxiety there is in your life. And this explains why the one thing I repeatedly say to all my clients is: “How you eat – not what you eat – is the most important element in gut health.” Why? Simple biology: your digestive processes – enzymes, bile and acid productions, bacteria health and liver function to name a few – switch off – as soon as your brain detects stress. That’s pure survival instinct. So you could have the most perfect food on your plate, but if your ability to produce any of the above crucial digestive processes is off – you will not digest it. And it will harm your gut. What’s the solution? Stop the stress before, during and after eating.

GENERAL

We eat mostly what our emotions or advertising tell us to eat, whenever and whichever way, while driving, answering emails, watching the news. And we expect our guts to get on with digesting it all. Then we wake up when our bodies – and guts – tell us ‘enough is enough’! Breathe: take a minute to breathe deeply into your gut to help your brain and gut relax. Mood check: do not eat if upset, rushed, stressed, over-excited. Wait until you’ve calmed down. Watch how you eat: are you chewing well, being mindful of what you’re eating, and slowing down? Learn to love your food: shift your focus on enjoyment rather than fear, blame and guilt. Be grateful for your food: gratitude will put you in the right frame of mind for optimal digestion. 51 Jack Noddings has written a children’s adventure series set in Brighton…

Local author – Jack Noddings Jack Noddings of Elm Grove has written a children’s magical adventure series, Way And The Witch, set in Brighton. The first book, Giggling Zombies In Brighton, received a great response and the second, Saving Christmas, is to be released in December, with 30% of profits going to local children’s charity Rockinghorse. What is your background?

GENERAL

I’m from a village outside Brighton called Forest Row, and went to school in Horsham. I’ve been a jobbing TV comedy writer for the last ten years, working with Channel 4, BBC Three and Comedy Central, among others. I’m now self-publishing the Way And The Witch series and the response from the local community has been very encouraging. Tell us more about Way And The Witch… Way And The Witch is a magical adventure children’s book series about 11-yearold Way from Hanover and her best friend Stella, a witch. They have to protect Brighton from things called Wild Enchantments, a very dangerous kind of magic. It’s a fun, high energy series with lots of twists Jack’s nephew Tenzin Keal enjoying Way And The Witch and turns and plenty of heart! Why did you set the books in Brighton? It’s my home and I love it. It’s so unique! I liked the idea of mixing Brighton’s vibrant character with a magical adventure story. Plus, when I was young, I would have been so excited to have read a book set in places I knew - it would have made the experience much more personal. “I’ve been there!”, “I know where that is!” That’s what I imagined young Brightonians saying as I wrote it. What age group are the books suitable for? I wrote it for 7 to 12 year olds but I think any age can enjoy it. Especially if you’re from Brighton. I think you’ll get a thrill out

of seeing places you know, like the pier, Hanover, the Lanes, the Level and much more, in a new and fun way. Why did you choose to support Rockinghorse? I was born with club foot and had multiple operations at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, which the Rockinghorse raises money for. I needed a charity to appear in the first book and it seemed like an obvious fit. They have been very supportive of the book. A limited edition collection of the first two Way And The Witch books is available at wayandthewitch.com

53 News from the council…

Green Flag awards Urban Seven of the city’s parks have been design awarded prestigious Green Flags this year after being ranked some of the best in the country. consultation The Urban Design Framework will be used to guide planning applications and ensure designers and developers provide high quality new buildings and attractive public spaces that are usable for all residents. Hove Park; photo by Stephen Batey

The national awards, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, have been given to Hove Park, Stoneham Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens, Easthill Park, Kipling Gardens, Preston Park and The Level for being well maintained with excellent facilities. Hove Park is celebrating a 16th success and Stoneham Park picked up its 11th award. Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “This is a fantastic achievement and shows how committed our City Parks staff, friends groups and volunteers are in maintaining the parks to the highest standard year after year. Covid has and is giving the council many challenges, including in our parks and open spaces, so it’s even more pleasing to see we have continued to provide excellent facilities for our residents and visitors during these difficult times.” The Green Flags are usually awarded in July each year but were delayed this year due to the pandemic.

A central theme running through the guidance is the way in which good design can help provide inclusive, accessible, sustainable and climate-resilient new development. This will help the city achieve its aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and support the carbon neutral plan. Your views will feed into the final version of the guidance. Communities will have an opportunity to see how their contributions have shaped the final document when it is taken back to the committee for review. The aim is to adopt the new guidance in early 2021. You can find the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk. Comments can also be given by email to planningprojects@brighton-hove.gov.uk or in writing to: Draft UDF SPD Policy Projects and Heritage Team, Brighton & Hove City Council, First Floor Hove Town Hall, Norton Road BN3 3BQ. The closing date for comments is 11 December.

57 Paula Wrightson, Venue Officer at Preston Manor, on Christmas past…

An Edwardian Christmas at Preston Manor

So, we must turn to contemporary sources describing Christmas celebrations in other grand residences. A 1904 article, “Christmas with the King and Queen” in The London Magazine, tells of Christmas at Sandringham as celebrated by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Ellen Thomas-Stanford at Preston Manor would aim for a Brighton equivalent. A prettily decked Christmas tree would be placed in the hall, gifts sourced from the most fashionable tradesmen and department stores; a church service on Christmas morning, an afternoon walk in the gardens if the weather was fine. At Sandringham gifts were presented to the hard-working servants and estate workers, “handsomely bound books, articles of jewellery, etc from the King, and books, art pottery, art needlework, wood carving and silk dresses from the Queen”. The crowning ceremony of the day was Christmas dinner, an evening meal for the Edwardian upper-class. Servants clad in splendid liveries stood at attention in the new Preston Manor dining room (added in 1905), tables were laden with the best china and plate and decorated with hothouse flowers. The menu would include beef, turkey, plum pudding and mince pies, foodstuffs we would recognize today. After the meal Ellen would emulate her Queen in leading the ladies to the drawing room for chatter or a game of bridge leaving the men to port, cigars and talk of sport and politics.

GENERAL

I am frequently asked, at this time of year, how the resident household celebrated Christmas at Preston Manor and I’m afraid I don’t know. Charles and Ellen Thomas-Stanford, the last private inhabitants, did not leave us evidence by way of diaries, letters, or photographs of their celebrations.

Christmas celebrations lasted into the night. At Sandringham, the servants had their Christmas dinner the following day. However, I can’t picture Ellen Thomas-Stanford doing as the royals did and joining the merriment below stairs. Her son John described his mother as “a terrific snob”. Former housemaid Ethel Cook, interviewed aged 78 in 1984, says of a servants’ Christmas, festivities were “only what we made ourselves”. When asked, “Did you get any presents from upstairs?” she replied, “Oh, no.” Charles and Ellen sometimes spent Christmas on the balmy island of Madeira, changing the festive mood downstairs back home. Then “in the servants’ hall they really had fun, and they had the workers, the men would join in with the celebrations and they had a party. All above board of course.” To check opening times and find out more about Preston Manor visit www.brightonmuseums.org.uk

59 Brighton Open Air Theatre in Dyke Road Park are hoping that their Christmas season can go ahead...

BOAT Christmas Season For the first time ever, BOAT is producing in-house not one, but two Christmas productions, in rep. These outdoor, socially-distanced and Covidcompliant shows last one hour each and play for two and a half weeks leading up to Christmas.

BOAT’s modern adaptation of “The Snow Queen” is a perfect family Christmas adventure - funny, magic and full of surprises. Greta’s brother, Kay, has been acting strange. He’s mean and moody and won’t play games. The Snow Queen must have snatched him and left an imposter in his place! With her new friend, the wise-cracking, fame-hungry talking Crow to guide her, Greta must set out across the snow to search for her brother in the Snow Queen’s palace and bring him home in time for Christmas. 8-24 December, 5pm (2pm Sundays); £12 (children £8) “Hansel and Gretel?” is a postmodern pantomime. Bill and Toni have just met and fallen head-over-heels for each other. Problem is, they’ve met on stage, and Bill’s been plucked from the audience to play Hansel … with Toni playing her sister Gretel. This is the least of enigmatic director Mal Sixsmith’s troubles, as Simon the Dame

GENERAL

BOAT encourages visitors to wrap up warm, bring blankets, umbrellas and something dry to sit on, and treat yourself to a mulled wine at the bar before settling down to enjoy the show. These may very well be the only Christmas shows in Brighton this year, so whether it’s a gorgeously re-told classic fairy-tale, or a musical deconstruction of the traditional pantomime, there’s something for you at BOAT this Christmas.

demands his role be expanded beyond its paltry 14 pages. Featuring musical numbers from Cardi B to Kate Bush, “Hansel And Gretel?” asks the important questions: what is postmodernism? What is pantomime? Is this really a kid’s show, or just a load of pretentious twaddle? Honestly? Probably, yes. But there is a rapping dragon, so it’s worth coming just for that. 8-24 December, 7.30pm (4.30pm Sundays); £15 (children £10); age 8+ You can book tickets at www.brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk or call TicketSource on 0333 666 4466.
