Hollingdean & Stanmer councillor news It was great to get Zoe John, the Green Party candidate, elected in the Hollingdean and Stanmer by-election in May and we’ve been busy since then, reaching out to residents across the ward. This has included hosting GoodGym in Bates Estate at the end of July to help us clear some of the pathways that had been blocked by overgrown bushes, and with the residents in Saunders Park View, who overlook the building site of the Preston Barracks development and have had ongoing problems with disruption and which we have been able to establish a better, more direct link to the developers and the council teams involved so that we can get faster answers to their questions in the future. Some of the key priorities in the ward are to improve our parks and green spaces and we are really happy to have the renovation of Haig Park in Coldean completed. We won funding from the council for this last year and there is £3 million additional investment that has been put aside by the Greens for further renovation of playgrounds across the city, including £100k for Hollingdean Park and £50k for Wolseley Road Park, to be completed over the next few years. In addition, one really great success story has been Stanmer Park and I’ve had lots of people contacting me letting me know how impressed they are with the One Garden Brighton area in the restored walled garden. If you haven’t been already, it’s the perfect time during the warmer weather to pop up and enjoy the park, which also has another new play-

Martin and Zoë in Stanmer Park

ground at the entrance to the park, which has proven extremely popular. Last but not least, just a quick update on two campaigns: Our “Wildflower Ward” project has been delayed because of COVID but we had a good meeting with council officers at the start of August to walk around Hollingdean and identify sites for planting and will be taking forward more detailed work on this with the Growing Hollingdean group over the next few months. We’re also keen to work on implementing measures to calm the flow of traffic in the residential areas of Hollingdean and Coldean and making them more “liveable neighbourhoods”. We’re in conversation with a few groups on plans to change the look and feel of their streets and we’d like to hear from other residents who want to bring about change in their area, so please get in touch. You can contact me via my email Martin.Osborne@brighton-hove.gov.uk or use 07510 500383.

Fiveways news…

10 News from the council…

Parking Zone J review Residents in the Preston Circus area who live within Parking Zone J are being asked to have their say on proposed changes to the parking scheme. The council are consulting on proposals which could see the parking scheme split into two separate parking schemes (J1 and J2). Residents wishing to take part in the consultation should complete the online Parking Zone J questionnaire by 6 September at: consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk/ parking/area-j-review Background In June 2018, residents presented a petition to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee. It was outlined that the original advantage of the Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) was that residents could park during the day and overnight within reasonable walking distance of their homes. However, it was felt that Zone J has now become too large following extensions to the scheme. Since the extension of Zone J north of the railway line, residents have had parking difficulties, particularly in the evening. What happens next? Residents are now being asked if they feel changes need to be made to parking controls in Zone

J. The results will be presented to the ETS committee on 16 November. If the results of the consultation show support to split the zone, the council will then consult with residents again on details of the proposed changes. The results of a further consultation will be presented to a future ETS committee. More information Residents in Parking Zone J can request a paper version of the questionnaire by calling 01273 290 510 and leaving a message with your name and address. They can also call 01273 295 654, between 10am and midday, Tuesday to Thursday until 2 September 2021 when the council will be able to answer any questions you may have.

13 Lina Talbot tells us about a great café inside St George’s Church…

This is the name to be found on the website for the café inside St George’s Church, although my friends and I say “going to Sandro’s”. In partnership with the church, he has been running the catering side of things as chef, waiter and now Covid sanitiser for the past five years, and really has created a hidden gem. One reason is that it’s out of view inside the church, where we can sit and enjoy a delicious meal of the day while absorbing the cool space and restrained neoclassical décor. At the time of writing (July 21st) there are ten tables for café guests inside the main church building, which is of course light, airy and spacious with its high ceiling and windows. Or we can take our meal outside to the benches of the nicely designed garden space with its attractive flower beds and stalwart row of chestnut trees, providing welcome shade in times of heatwave. Sandro, originally from northern Portugal, creates his meals with European flair. His fried onion is just tinged with brown, his avocado perfectly ripe, and his focaccia quite delicious. The selection of drinks covers all tastes - I am partial to the hot chocolate. My friend says that the Bakewell tart is magnificent. (I don’t dare feed my temptation…)

Sandro at the café

group meetings begin again in earnest in September, he will need to take on a helper.

For Sandro has a second, most important, role – as has the interior of St George’s Church and the Crypt beneath – providing for the local community. All manner of groups including the local U3A meet Other meals of the day include ham & cheese toasties, grilled vegetables & feta, here regularly as well as more largescale events taking place - music contuna with cheese & onion, all on a choice certs, talks, annual awards events and of of brown, white or that lovely focaccia course food events. For those participants bread. And Portuguese empanadas as well – everything made by Sandro himself seeking refreshment, Sandro is there and always ready to lend a listening ear: the in the kitchen downstairs. I don’t know where he finds the time for it all! When the need to chat can be as important as the need for coffee! Of course the events programme has been battling with Covid New lights/sockets Darren Clarke restrictions, but hopefully everything will to full re-wires Home Electrical be back to “almost normal” come SepGuaranteed low rates Services Call Darren tember. 15 News from the council…

A project to restore Brighton & Hove’s historic seafront lighting is beginning. The first stage will involve making safe the heritage listed lanterns and brackets, which have deteriorated following decades of exposure to the harsh seafront conditions. These will be replaced with temporary lighting which will be in place for at least 18 months. The lanterns and brackets will be safely stored while restoration and design work is carried out. The lamppost columns will remain in place. The second phase of reinstating the iconic design will begin in early 2022. The project, which will take at least 2-3 years to complete, will mean a significant investment in the region of £2million from the City Transport Capital Programme. The council will be updating a webpage created specifically for this project (brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/ parking-and-travel/roads-and-highways/ street-lighting/restoring-heritage-lighting-seafront). Inspections of 80 of the seafront lighting columns on Marine Parade and Madeira Drive last year found that more than half posed a significant health and safety risk. 20 columns had their lanterns re-

placed with temporary lighting in October 2020. The council are now having to do the same with 40 more. All materials will be safely stored until decisions are made on what can be reused and what may need replacing. In addition to this work, 50 streetlight lanterns are being replaced on the north side of Marine Parade. The lanterns are not listed by Historic England and are being replaced with new like-for-like LED lighting. Again, these materials will be safely stored while it’s determined if they could be reused or recycled.

Kemptown news…

Electric Vehicle Rally The inaugural London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally, which was to have taken place in July, unfortunately had to be postponed due to a rise in Coronavirus cases. A new date of Saturday 18 September 2021 has now been set for the event, which will showcase the development of electric vehicles. The road at Madeira Drive will be closed to host a mile-long village of workshops, displays, entertain-

ment, challenges, food and drink. The vehicles will depart from Westminster at 8.30am and are due to reach Madeira Drive between 10.30am and 1.30pm, with a presentation taking place between 2.30 and 4pm.

Melting Vinyl is giving exciting artists the opportunity to perform in the beautiful setting of St George’s Church. For their next concert, they present Greenness and Oddfellow’s Casino, in person on 30th September and streamed via YouTube on 13th October. Greenness is the musical project of French singer-songwriter Cess Frangi and English producer and composer Graham Pratt. Based in Brighton, they draw inspiration from hybrid genres, such as trip-hop and folktronica. Their music aims to create an immersive and emotional experience through the use of various acoustic instruments merged with electronic beats, sound effects, field recordings and evocative bilingual lyrics.

QUEENS PARK

This photo was taken around 1900-1904 by George Ruff Junior, who took many photographs of working-class children. These children seem to be reasonably clad for the period, two wearing Eton collars and all wearing lace-up boots.

Shoes were seldom worn then. The fox terrier was a popular breed of dog at this time. The boy on the left appears to have a cat on a lead!

22 A Queen’s Park traffic calming initiative…

Speedwatch VOLUNTEERS needed We have been in action locally for almost three months now, monitoring traffic speeds, and have been surprised by the lack of respect of some drivers for local speed limits and the safety of local people walking our streets. If we as a community are to be even more effective in making our streets safe for all people, we need to ensure our Speedwatch team has sufficient numbers to monitor local traffic speeds regularly, so speeding drivers get the message that it is antisocial and dangerous to ignore speed limits. We are covering eight locations and need help to be even more effective. We would welcome your active support and participation to make a big difference to local road safety. Can you give your community 30 minutes of your time once or twice a week? That’s it :) If you can help or know anyone who would actively help, it would be great. To find out more and/or volunteer, please get in touch. Queen’s Park and St Luke’s Community Speedwatch Group Email: qparkandstlukes@gmail.com More information at https://communityspeedwatch.org/

23 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

What a relief to be back together! You could sense the relief at the beginning of last month when, at last, the community was able to gather together for Bark in the Park, the popular dog show, which made its reappearance for the first time since 2019, writes Geoffrey Bowden, the Friends of Queen’s Park chairman.

The event was the first under the more relaxed Government COVID regime and helped raise much-needed funds which will go towards the maintenance of the park as local authority budgets continue to be squeezed.

QUEENS PARK

Leo, the Golden Retriever, took it all in his stride though. Not only was he judged to be the Handsomest Dog, he walked off with the prized rosette that declared him to be Best in Show. His human, Emma Southerby, was, understandably, proud as punch.

A modest start to the reintroduction of the Friends Group’s community programme. The next is set for December when we will come together at the Royal Spa Nursery to belt out some traditional carols to raise our spirits and, hopefully, a few more pennies to add to the park maintenance fund. Watch this space for the announcement of the exact date.

25 News from Elaine Hills, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News

A new gate at the racecourse; photo by Clare Rainey

The latest report by the International Panel on Climate Change revealed the shocking pace of environmental destruction and the need to drastically cut the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. A major way to lower emissions is to reduce the dominance of motorised vehicles in cities by creating safe walking and cycling infrastructure. The Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, which I sit on, recently agreed to continue work on improvements to walking and cycling on the A259 seafront road, along Western Road and on the A23 from Preston Circus to Patcham roundabout. But it was of great sadness to Greens that Conservative and Labour councillors voted for the removal of the temporary cycle lanes on the Old Shoreham Road. This is a huge blow to the people who have written to councillors saying they need the lanes to feel safe cycling to school and work. And the decision means that the council is likely to lose Government funding for further improvements to our roads. Greens will continue to push for a network of cycle lanes across the city. In July I hosted a second ‘liveable neighbourhood’ webinar. Chantal Spencer, a local disability activist, spoke of the difficulty in navigating a wheelchair or mobility scooter along our narrow pavements, which are

often blocked by bins and don’t have enough dropped kerbs. Local charity Possability People will be carrying out an accessibility audit in the coming months. The needs of our most vulnerable residents must be a key part of the Liveable Hanover and Tarner scheme. Another measure to complement the scheme could be an electric car-sharing club. Brighton EV Share expects the first cars to be on Ewart Street, but residents will be consulted first. To find out more, contact: bhevshare@gmail.com The recent installation of fencing around the racecourse made it difficult for residents to access the area so I asked council officers to look into ways to restore it. They met with racecourse managers who have put in two accessible gates. An exhibition of “My Dream Street” posters goes on display in the foyer at Jubilee Library, 13-26 September. Come and see what the children of local schools would like their streets to look like and have a go at designing your own. Finally, as I write this, I’m down with Covid. It’s like a nasty cold, but could have been a lot worse without having received the vaccine. Please keep yourself and those around you safe by getting vaccinated, if you haven’t already. Go to nhs.uk to find out more.

As well as dealing with residents’ issues, councillors have to make decisions to improve the wellbeing of everyone across the city.

27 An article on wheelie bins from a Hanover resident…

Don’t rubbish Hanover I’ve lived in Whichelo Place, Hanover, for 27 years. Yes there have been a lot of changes – some good, some bad. Clearly I’m happy here or I’d have moved, wouldn’t I?

But what spoils the brightly-painted terraced houses with their vibrant potted plants outside? Yes, you’ve guessed it - the permanent fixture of the GREEN WHEELIE BIN – not forgetting three or four black containers per household for added “decoration”. Some of the contents of open containers get whisked around by wind and rain, thus littering our streets further. (The Council provide nets to prevent this.) We are creating a hazard for pedestrians, inviting pests/rodents and (dare I say it?) lowering the tone of the neighbourhood.

As a bit of a researcher I bothered to find out that there is a bye-law to say that waste-containers/bins etc should not be left on the pavement days prior to the collection date. Oh and yes – there’s a fine too (not exceeding £80). I’ve never heard of this being put into practice, have you? Now, most people think of fly-tipping as a rogue-builder’s way of free disposal of rubbish into the countryside. Yes – but did you know that we can all be fly-tippers by simply leaving a piece of unwanted furniture outside our homes (“please take me, I’m free!”)? Electrical items like fridges, washing machines, TVs etc are not likely to be in working order and therefore will remain for weeks cluttering up the pavements. I’ve even seen a used mattress left outside for days – can you guess why no one wanted it? (The MINIMUM fine for fly-tipping is currently £400, by the way, and it’s a criminal offence.) Most people in this street have cars - the council refuse tip is less than five minutes away. For non-electrical goods there’s always a welcoming charity shop. For a reasonable charge the Council will collect large unwanted items. I often find myself walking around the North Laine and recently asked a chap who was tending his outdoor plants what provision was there for refuse collection. There wasn’t a wheelie bin in sight! They are lucky enough to be able to dispose of waste in nearby communal bins. Come on Hanoverians – let’s get our act together please and put our refuse out a day prior to collection.

The wheelie-bins are on wheels for a reason – so that you can easily move them through the house into the garden (we all have one here). Here’s hoping... Kris

29 News from Hanover Action…

Green home improvements... The latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report warns us that irreversible damage to the planet from climate change is already underway and clearly spells out we need to take radical action to prevent further harm. Extreme weather events throughout the world over the Summer have highlighted this. Hopefully the COP26 conference in November in Scotland will help steer us in the right direction but closer to home is there much we can do?

The government’s Green Homes Grant programme which would have provided a significant amount of funding for green improvements was cancelled last year. But support to achieve the scale of changes required is urgently needed and we hope there will be an announcement later this year on a new grant system. In the meantime we need to consider what we could do with our homes and learn from examples about what works. Much of the housing in Brighton is Victorian with solid wall construction and little insulation, so energy use is typically high. These homes are hard to improve but we have some great examples in Hanover! In September 2021, Hanover Action will be hosting a free webinar to focus on real life examples. Three local householders will share their experiences of green home

HANOVER

In Brighton, there seems to be a strong awareness of the need to live green, with recycling and reuse and eating less meat etc becoming a way of life for many. But what about reducing energy use in the home?

improvements, and talk about what motivated them, how successful this has been and what advice they would give to others. Topics will include solar panels, external wall insulation and air source heat pumps. This is part of a Brighton and Hove City Council funded project we are working on in partnership with the Low Carbon Trust (LCT) and they will be hosting three further webinars which will provide expert advice on green home improvements. They will also be publishing a series of virtual tours of eco-homes, including several in Hanover. To book your place, visit: https://greeningourhomes.eventbrite.co.uk

32 Meet a local musician…

Hanover person... Penelope Trappes Penelope Trappes is an Australian musician who lives in Hanover. She has just released her third album, ‘Penelope Three’, on Houndstooth and will be performing at The Rose Hill on September 30, as part of a UK tour. How did you come to live in Hanover? After living in London for seven years, last year I decided to move seaside as the pandemic was in full force. Previous to living in London, I was a long-term resident of NYC and, because of all those years living in a massive metropolitan city, I had maxed out my desire for that kind of lifestyle. Having grown up near the eastern coastline of Australia, I yearned to return to a life closer to the water. Funnily, Brighton was the first place in the UK where I ever played a live show, in 2008. I loved it here back then! We opted for London first, but finally, we made it here! As a child my family was always based on top hills like Hanover, which I have always loved, and when I left home I found the happiest places for me were also hillside. Tell us about your music… I have been involved in music for many years in more beat-oriented projects, but since moving to the UK I have started writing and producing my own slow, meditative music as a solo artist with more of a nod to 80s 4AD, This Mortal Coil, Slowdive or Portishead. I wanted to be more honest about my art as a woman and as a mother. I had more ‘real’ stories I needed to write and tangible meditative drones I needed to share with the world. Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from film, photography, art and books. Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman, Ana Mendieta, Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Tracy Emin, among others. Before

Covid, I used to get a lot of inspiration from travel, though now that’s been taken up with nature, alongside meditation, mindfulness and yoga, which has brought me to a place of self-reflection and self-awareness. Who are your own favourite musical artists? I have a monthly three-hour-long show on 1BTN Radio in Brighton - noon on the fourth Wednesday of every month - that is filled with experimental, meditative, mostly beatless music that I adore. So much amazing music out there - to name a few: Julianna Barwick, KMRU, Keely Forsyth, Ana Roxanne, Gazelle Twin and also longtime favourites: Grouper, Alice Coltrane, PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Low, Nina Simone and Kate Bush. What do you like to do to relax? Float in the sea. For more information and tickets, visit therosehill.co.uk/events.

35 This article is by John Rawlings of the Natural Medicine Practice…

Re-evaluating our approach to childhood fevers Recent findings from the three Royal Colleges of Medicine show that parents who have not previously experienced their children having a fever were taking them straight to A&E, rather than following the advice to seek help from their GP, pharmacy, or the option of the individualised, integrated approach of a qualified natural medicine practitioner.

Understandably, fevers can cause a scary time for both the parents and the child, but it helps to be informed first. Investing in a good quality clinical digital thermometer allows a parent to take their child’s temperature accurately. If a baby under three months has a temperature of 38C or higher, parents should immediately seek medical advice or bring the child into A&E. For babies of three to six months old the NHS benchmark is 39C. For under-twos, a fever of above 38C lasting for more than a day should be checked, as should fever spikes of 40C for a child of any age. It is vital that a child with fever be kept hydrated with plenty of cool but not chilled water, and if bathed it must be in tepid but never cold water, to avoid bringing on a chill. Babies of two to four months old often spike a fever - a naturally occurring fever often resolves itself as a cold, diarrhoea, or skin rash, as the toxins are eliminated from the system. From a natural medicine perspective, it is considered unwise to routinely block the beneficial natural process of fever, unless deemed necessary. The body raises its internal heat to impede the function of the pathogen(s) in an attempt to protect

itself. Providing the fever is not above 39C and does not run for more than two or three days, it is preferable where possible and safe to allow the time for it to run its course without automatic recourse to suppressive measures, such as over the counter anti-inflammatories and pain killers. GENERAL

The pressures on A&E departments this summer are comparable with those usually expected only in winter, and a significant proportion is due to parents bringing in young children with mild fevers that could be cared for effectively at home.

37 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

In ‘the trenches’ at school It’s September 1939. Just back in school after the August holiday, a group of children from Ditchling Road School (now Downs School) pose for the camera in the school’s newly-finished ‘trenches’ or ARP shelter (ARG/3/2204). They look suntanned and happy and are probably excited by the disruption which the war has caused.

Reading the weekly logbook, probably written by the head teacher (E/ SC/164/4/1) we can discover what was happening in these early months of the war. The usual enemies of classroom attendance – freezing weather, colds, measles, scarlet fever and influenza – were still there, but now there would be air raids. In early November, a parents’ meeting was held to discuss air raid precautions, after which parents were conducted through the trenches. During the Christmas holidays the electric light in the trenches failed (you can see it here in working order!) and wasn’t repaired until the following April. In May 1940, air raid drills recommenced, particularly practice in climbing out of the vertical metal-bar ladders which functioned as emergency exits. The real air raid warnings, and the raids themselves, started in August, just after the school had reopened after a reduced two-week holiday. The logbook records that, ‘school life has been very much upset by air raid alarms – two occurring while children were in school and two during the dinner hour, thereby delaying

the start of the afternoon session.’ This first week was merely a precursor, however, of continuous disruption to school routine which was to continue well into 1941. Sometimes children could be in and out of the trenches several times a day, for periods lasting from ten minutes to well over an hour. On Tuesday 17 and 24 September, there were afternoon raids without warning. In the first, ‘The children were hurried into the corridors and classrooms where there is protection from glass.’ During the second, ‘The children ducked under desks as the sound of a falling bomb was heard.’ There isn’t a trace of panic in the logbook’s cool description of these events. But it must have been a terrible time. One can’t help but empathise with the teachers; their difficult job must have become even more challenging at this time of national emergency. www.thekeep.info

GENERAL

It would be half-days only at school for the next few months, as the school premises would be shared with two Croydon schools, South Norwood Infants and Gonville Infants. Gas masks had been distributed in July and air raid wardens visited the school on 22 September to examine every child’s mask.

39 Meet teacher and founder of Alta Academy of Dance, Deborah Mercer

A Passion for Dance Professionally trained dancer and teacher Deborah Mercer, who lives in Brighton with her family, set up Alta Academy of Dance last year – a dance school with classes for all ages.

Why did you decide to set up a Dance School? I was keen to combine my passion for teaching and nurturing the next generation of dancers with my creativity and organisational skills. Alta was borne initially out of coaching my own daughter, as well as private lessons for a range of students and small group classes for those who wanted additional focus on their technique and artistry. This has now developed into a full timetable of classes for all ages! Tell us more about the school and classes available? We currently offer a range of ballet and PBT (ballet conditioning) classes for children and adults in venues in Brighton and Hove – some are purpose-built dance studios with sprung floors, mirrors and

barres and others are lovely, large community spaces. We also run workshops, repertoire classes, choreography, private lessons, exam coaching and audition preparation lessons (including photography and video).

GENERAL

Born and brought up in Hong Kong, I started ballet at the age of 5 on doctor’s orders to help with my asthma. I progressed through all my Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) ballet exams and successfully auditioned for the HK Ballet Group where I performed group and solo roles alongside professional dancers. I subsequently trained at the world-renowned Académie Princesse Grace in Monaco, where I performed in shows at the Palais de Congrès and in an Operetta televised for French TV. My training continued at Rambert Ballet School (as it was known then) and I qualified as a teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance. I have been teaching in Brighton and Hove for many years ever since.

Photo: Birdy Peacock

What is your background?

This past year, our classes really helped everyone to stay connected and active and maintained training for those aiming for a career in dance. We care for and value each student, paying great attention to detail and celebrating every achievement - big or small. We are immensely proud of our students’ successes, from distinctions awarded in recent ballet exams to coveted places on Associate training programmes at top UK establishments such as The Royal Ballet School, English National Ballet School and Central School of Ballet. We are enrolling now for the Autumn Term and have added new pre-school, conditioning, and adult classes. Sign up today for your free trial quoting `SB21’ or contact us for more information. 41 September is Recovery Month…

Local charity – Kennedy Street Clare Kennedy is the founder and CEO of local charity Kennedy Street CiO, which she set up with her actor husband Kevin Kennedy aka Curly Watts from Coronation Street and West End musical superstar. The charity offers support, signposting and connection to individuals, families and businesses interested in recovery from addiction.

Our charitable work started as a result of our own experience. When we started seeking recovery support 25 years ago, we didn’t know where to start or who to turn to; our GP at the time didn’t know what to do with us. Kevin was a very high functioning alcoholic and I was using drink and drugs to help me cope with the marriage I’d found myself in, or so I thought. To all the world looking in, we had it made, but what people didn’t know was alcohol, and drugs in my case, were destroying not only our lives but our marriage as well. Eventually, by sheer chance, we met someone who offered us some recovery guidance. At Kennedy Street we believe that free, person-centred guidance, support and recovery options should be easily accessible to EVERYONE. Can you help with any kind of addiction? Yes, we offer recovery support, signposting and connection to anyone interested in recovery for any kind of addiction including process addiction, eg gambling. Have the lockdowns led to more people needing your help? Yes, before the lockdown, we operated a small recovery outreach project in any free space we could find, offering life and business coaching skills. It’s easy to stop drinking and drug taking, but it’s difficult to stay stopped, so our primary focus was helping those choosing recovery to flourish. Then, when lockdown hit, a new service

emerged - a recovery helpline. Our phone line went from five calls to over 100 calls in a week. Because we are embedded in the recovery community, we were swiftly able to connect callers to freely available Zoom support groups. We also started to collate a national list of free and private recovery rehab support.

GENERAL

How did you come to set up Kennedy Street?

What sort of people have you helped? 97% of the calls we have received over the last 18 months have been from functioning addicts, nurses, teachers, other frontline service providers, business owners, furloughed staff etc. Do you need any volunteers? Yes, we are always in need of volunteers - business volunteers primarily, preferably those with their own established careers who are looking to get involved with a start-up charity, eg marketing, social media or corporate partnership development. 47 This article is by Kate Elms, who volunteers at this community bookshop…

A bookshop with a difference... A bookshop with a difference has popped up in Cranbourne Street in central Brighton. The Book Makers is a partnership between local author William Shaw, arts charity Creative Future and independent bookshop Goldsboro Books, and its aim is not just to sell books - although there are some wonderful titles on offer - but also to provide inspiration, practical support and a welcoming, creative space for emerging and under-represented writers. Photo by Kitty Wheeler Shaw

There will also be opportunities to discover new sources of creative inspiration, such as the Mass Observation Archive, plus sessions where writers can simply come together to work in peace. The project’s emphasis on inclusivity is reflected in the programme, with talks and events tackling themes of race, class, identity, health and wellbeing.

The Book Makers will be open from Wednesday to Saturday until the end of December this year, and is staffed entirely by volunteers. As well as some brilliant fiction, the shop stocks publications for writers, including those just starting out From this month, a programme of events subjects range from learning to read like a put together by Creative Future, New writer to getting an agent. GENERAL

The project came about through a Brighton & Hove City Council initiative to offer vacant premises to arts organisations for a six-month period. Shaw and Creative Future Director Jane McMorrow spotted an opportunity to promote the work of established local writers and, at the same time, to develop a mentoring programme in which their skills and experience could nurture new voices from diverse backgrounds. Writers contributing to the project include Sharon Duggal, Elly Griffiths, Paul Burston, Vaseem Khan and Bethan Roberts, author of My Policeman, which is currently being made into a film set in Brighton starring Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee and Rupert Everett.

49 News from the council…

Disposal of batteries Brighton & Hove City Council have reminded residents not to dispose of old, unwanted or dead batteries in their general waste or recycling. The advice comes after a bin lorry was set on fire in July because someone left a bag of household batteries in their rubbish. Some of the batteries exploded inside the waste holder which set alight other waste. To ensure the fire could be put out, the lorry had to tip the whole of its contents onto the road for the fire service to extinguish.

What to do with unwanted batteries: The council haven’t collected batteries for years, so instead they should be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Sites (near Old Shoreham Road, Hove, and off Wilson Avenue, Brighton) or dropped off at one of the many battery recycling points throughout the city, including most local supermarkets. You can also find your nearest recycling location at recyclenow.com by entering your postcode, town or city.

Batteries that can be recycled are: • All household batteries including ‘button’ batteries from watches • Battery packs from laptops, mobile phones, power tools and remote-control units • Car batteries should be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Sites You can also help by: • Using rechargeable batteries where possible • Selling or donating working, but unwanted, battery-powered electronic items instead of throwing them away. This can be done by contacting the reuse and recycle service RevaluElectricals by Tech-Takeback (techtakeback. com/revaluelectricals.html) • Removing a battery from a product and recycling it separately and responsibly If a battery cannot be removed from a product, the whole item should be recycled at the Household Waste Recycling Sites, the council’s small electricals recycling points or RevaluElectricals by Tech-Takeback.

GENERAL

Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: “Thankfully no-one was injured, but the situation could have been far worse for the driver and crew, and potentially passers-by. The incident shows that batteries thrown into ordinary bins, household waste or with other recycling are extremely dangerous. They can easily get squashed, compacted, punctured, shredded or soaked in liquids. When this happens, they can ignite, resulting in fires that endanger lives, cause expensive damage and disrupt waste services. Damaged batteries are also dangerous as they contain chemicals and materials that can harm the environment if they aren’t recycled responsibly.”

51 Healthy living advice from health coach Siobhan McHenry…

Avoid lifestyle disease Over the past 18 months, non-Covid health concerns have moved out of focus. Consequently, we are seeing an increase in lifestyle-related disease, like Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). Please take a few minutes to understand how this dysfunction can take hold and steps you can take to slow progression and with commitment reverse it. Check food labels

Key Major Contributors to Metabolic Dysfunction (T2D) • High-glycaemic diet – allows rapidly digested / absorbed sugars, eg sweetened beverages, juice, refined grains, sweetened foods and excessive intake of fructose.

• Stress – increases cortisol and/or adrenaline which increase blood sugar separate from diet. • Genetics – innate levels of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity in specific cell types. But not sufficient alone to result in T2D. • Oxidative stress/toxicity – myriad sources including water, food, air, stress. • Age – innate insulin resistance increases with age. • Lack of exercise – reduces insulin receptor sensitivity. Minimizes utilization of fuel intake. Promotes lower muscle mass. • Essential fatty acid deficiency – impairs cell membranes and insulin receptor sensitivity.

greater cravings for refined carb foods, lower metabolism and sedentary habits. Progressive Solution • MAKE THE CUT Reduce sugar input. (Check food labels – sugar is in unsuspected savoury goods.) Eat whole, natural food that changes genetic expression, shifts the microbiome, reduces oxidative stress and slows glucose loading. • USE THE GLUT – Increase glucose utilization through regular exercise. • SHIFT THE GUT – Eliminate glucose storage as fat by paying more attention to your food input versus energy output through exercise. Create the shift to fat for fuel / energy production. • OUT OF THE RUT - Restore insulin sensitivity to glucose by adopting a lifestyle including the above steps.

• Medications – corticosteroids, some hypertension drugs (diuretics, beta-blockers), some anti-psychotics and statins deplete magnesium and reduce insulin sensitivity.

Avoiding and reversing T2D is possible. I have helped clients in both instances through guidance and support. The most important first and vital step is wanting to make the change but, with the right help and support this change is possible.

• Low energy from hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue or hormone imbalance can cause

• Highly-processed foods – decrease availability of minerals such as chromium, biotin and magnesium, critical for maintaining healthy insulin sensitivity, and increase ingestion of inflammatory chemicals. Often contain inflammatory trans fats or excess levels of refined seed oils, both of which impair insulin sensitivity at the cell membrane.

Brighton Marathon 2021

Ageing Well Festival

This year’s Brighton Marathon takes place on Sunday 12th September, with the runners heading off from Preston Park after 9am.

The Ageing Well Festival 2021 in Brighton & Hove is set to return from 20th September to 4th October with a full and varied programme of events based around a Creative Ageing theme.

Throughout the weekend, a huge Beach Village will be installed next to the finish line in Madeira Drive for everyone to enjoy. The Beach Village will have a redesigned layout to create more space. There will be a few other changes this year to mitigate any risk from Covid-19. The start area in Preston Park has been redesigned so that runners are able to socially distance and they have been asked not to bring supporters to the park. This year’s BM Ride for cyclists has had to be cancelled in order to enable the start procedure for runners to be spaced out.

The festival provides fantastic opportunities to connect with friends, old and new, and most importantly have an abundance of much needed fun. The Ageing Well team have worked closely with colleagues in Public Health to bring this year’s festival, which is a mixture of online and live events to ensure there is something for everybody to enjoy safely. The programme is being distributed widely across the city. Check out the website for updates on events: ageingwellfestival.org

There will be a number of road closures on 12th September. For more information, visit brightonmarathonweekend.co.uk

54 News from the Plant Your Postcode group…

What’s happening with street trees? At the moment we have an issue with our street trees: many are being felled, quite properly, because they’re unstable. They’re old or diseased, a legacy of Victorian planting and elm disease. But it’s proving difficult to replant them in our residential streets. mature elm can be valued at over £100,000 for the ecological services it provides, and that typically property prices are 18% higher if there are trees in the street. The council’s Tree Strategy is due to be published very shortly. . . let’s do everything we can to prevent our green city becoming a treeless and grey city. Let’s encourage our council to consider the planting and re-planting of our street trees as the very high priority it should be. plantyourpostcode.org Train news…

Plant Your Postcode was set up to enable small communities to fundraise for trees in their local streets. However, replacing trees where there is an existing stump can cost thousands of pounds – the pavement and road may need to be resurfaced because of root damage for instance. We know that currently our council does not have the finances to replace all our disappearing street trees, and we know that there is a problem with expecting local communities to raise such large sums of money for replacement trees in their areas. We know the ecological and the psychological value of street trees: the calming effect of the greenery, the wildlife that trees attract, the reduction of noise as well as cleaning the air and providing shelter and shade. There’s also a financial benefit: did you know for instance that a

Bee Bus Stop...

The solar-powered shelter, also known as a ‘Bee Bus Stop’ has a roof planted with a mix of wildflowers and sedum plants, which are rich in nectar and a favourite of bees and other pollinating insects. As well as helping pollinators, the shelter will also absorb rainwater, support the city’s biodiversity and is powered entirely by solar energy. It’s also fitted with a smart lighting system, which only turns on the courtesy lighting when a passenger is present, further minimising its environmental impact. All elements of the new shelter are fully recyclable as it has been designed with principles of circular economy. This means at end of life nothing needs to go to landfill.

great; it will be a little haven for wildlife. I’d really like to see many more of them around the city. We all know that there has been a serious decline in biodiversity and insects. And the green roof on this bus stop is a perfect way to give nature a breathing space. But this is also about humans - pollinating insects are a key part of the food chain with so much of what we eat dependent on pollination. The Bee Bus Stop is just another example of how we’re working to improve the city’s biodiversity, climate and air quality year-round.”

The Bee Bus Stop’s installation follows quickly after a petition launched by Brighton & Hove resident Yazmin Muir which asked for Bee Bus Stops in the city after The shelter has been paid for, installed and seeing Clear Channel Living Roofs in Utrecht in the Netherlands. 57 The Brighton & Hove Food Partnership tell us about a Day of Action on 29 September…

A day to celebrate planet-friendly food Did you know that our food system is one of the biggest contributors to climate change? Here in the UK, food contributes up to 30% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we waste 10 million tonnes of food every year and 90% of fisheries are fully exploited or overfished.

In order to achieve the UK’s climate and other goals we must reduce levels of food waste and consumption of the most carbon-intensive foods.

photo by Karen Lloyd, chef at The Gardener

This means: • Eating less meat, of all types • Eating less cheese, and moderating milk consumption • Shifting the balance of the diet towards more plant-based foods, including plant-based sources of protein such as beans and pulses • Minimising food waste Less and better meat: As well as eating less meat and dairy, we can make a positive impact on our planet by buying from farms with high animal welfare standards and a low impact on nature and biodiversity. The simplest way of doing this is choosing products with a credible animal welfare certification such as RSPCA Assured, LEAF marque, organic or Pasture for Life. Join a low carbon lunch: Whether you are an individual eating lunch solo or an organisation serving food, you can join in on 29 September by organising a ‘low carbon lunch’.

A low carbon lunch is a meal with ingredients that have lower GHG emissions. It includes mostly vegetables, with high welfare meat, fish and dairy, and food sourced in ways that result in healthier and prosperous communities. A low carbon lunch will most certainly be a colourful lunch that is not only good for the planet but good for our health 2 and a feast to our taste buds. Post your photos on social media. Don’t forget to tag @btnhovefood and include the hashtags #lowcarbonlunch #Food4Planet and #FoodPartnership. Last thing to remember is to eat everything you cook or serve and if you can’t use it, take it home or give it to someone else. Additional resources: There are a number of excellent resources to help you adopt planet-friendly menus, including Friends of the Earth’s ‘Kale Yeah’ toolkit and the One Planet Plate project from the Sustainable Restaurant Association.

You can sign up now for the Hedgerow Hike, which takes place in September. You can walk anywhere: for example, around your garden, on local footpaths or roads; in a park or local nature reserve; or in the South Downs National Park. You could even take on the South Downs Way or the High Weald Landscape Trail.

“Hedgerows are vitally important,” says CPRE Sussex Director Kia Trainor. “They are major features of the Sussex landscape and essential habitats supporting over 2,000 species, including our muchloved hedgehogs and dormice.” Hedgerows also help in the fight against climate change. Each year a new hedgerow can absorb the amount of carbon produced by a car travelling over 620

miles. With their leaves at the level of pedestrians, hedgerows are natural barriers to harmful air pollution in our streets – making our towns healthier places. Join the Hedgerow Hike at: www.cpresussex.org.uk/hedgerow-hike/ and sign up by requesting a sponsorship form or setting up a Just Giving page. CPRE Sussex stands up for a beautiful and thriving Sussex countryside that enriches all our lives. See: www.cpresussex.org.uk

New Youth Employment Hub for Brighton & Hove A new youth employment hub is now open to Brighton & Hove residents under 25. The hub, created by Brighton & Hove City Council in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), provides digital and in person support for young people to reach their education, employment and training goals.

GENERAL

Refurbished premises to the east of the city in Montague Place, Kemp Town, offer a physical space for young people to access computers, meet with advisors and get careers and employment support, while a digital hub provides a wealth of information online including the latest local job and training opportunities, how to apply to college or university, write a stand-out CV or application and where to find financial support and benefits. The hub aims to support at least five hundred 16–25 year olds over the course of the next year and increase employment, training, up-skilling, volunteering and apprenticeships in the city.

people who often fill these jobs who have suffered the consequences. The job market for people leaving education has also left many looking for jobs for the first time without opportunities.

Councillor Hannah Clare, Chair of the Children, Young People and Skills Committee, said: “Young people have been affected by the pandemic in many ways, and not least through the increase in youth unemployment.

“It’s therefore critical we do all we can to support our young people to fulfil their potential and find work.”

Dance and circus theatre at Brighton Dome

Passagers plays with the fascination and freedom of travel, both nostalgic and symbolic. Even in a time when travel is restricted, it allows audiences to be transported to another world in which a colourful and diverse group of strangers meet on board a train. Through the course of their journey, in a temporarily-suspended reality, they get to know each other, sharing their stories and revealing their emotional states through virtuoso acrobatics - vaulting somersaults, breath-taking trapeze, daredevil balances on the highwire - and contemporary dance, narrative and song. A variety of ticket prices are available, including family groups. Passagers director Shana Carroll says: “Passagers was originally designed as an ode to travel - departure versus arrival, chance versus choice, familiar versus foreign, confinement versus border-crossing. The show has now taken on a whole new dimension I’m not sure I could ever have imagined. I hope it will make us treasure the days of simple, liberating travel and celebrate a return to greater freedoms.” Also performing at Brighton Dome in September are Brighton’s platinum-selling singer-songwriter Passenger, aka Mike Rosenberg; singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist YUNGBLUD as part of his Life on Mars tour; as well as bands Hawkwind and Jethro Tull. Comedy in September includes Frank Skinner, Jimmy Carr, Chris Ramsey and

67 It’s the end of the summer season at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

September at the Brighton Open Air Theatre The acclaimed Brighton Shakespeare Company are finally back at the BOAT this month with Julius Caesar, a timeless classic of corruption, murder and mayhem (8-11 September). There’s also a fearless adaptation of Richard II by Quandary Collective (15-18 September).

The Great Gatsby is an evening of jazz, prohibition-style, with Heartbreak Productions and the Nick Carraway quartet. Nick is not only the band leader but a top-notch storyteller, and when he’s in the mood he can take you back to the summer of 1922 when he lived next door to none other than the infamous Jay Gatsby (1-2 September). For families, Terry Deary’s Twisted Tales is a brand new original comedy by the author of Horrible Histories. Three actors perform over 100 roles in as many minutes of fact-based fun, with Mr Pimm, a Victorian schoolteacher, battling against all odds to teach his pesky pupils a thing or two with hilarious consequences (3 September). In Between Spaces by Signdance Collective is a story investigating identity in the age of transient digital glitches. It centres on five characters who perambulate in a world outside of time. The show is accessible for deaf and hearing audiences and has both creative subtitling and sign theatre throughout the production, which are integral to the performance (22 September).

The Down for the Count Swing Orchestra

There’s also Open Air Cinema with Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe (23 September). Music this month includes a Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, with four classics presented by Opera Anywhere: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance and Patience, all in one weekend (4-5 September). You can join the Down for the Count Swing Orchestra as they celebrate the Legends of Swing in their own unmistakeable style – expect songs from the likes of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Ella Fitzgerald (19 September). Brighton’s own The Alter Eagles return to BOAT on 24 September, and the Brighton Beach Boys are back to close the season with a wide collection of the harmonies created by Brian Wilson (26 September).
