News of the Kemptown Carnival…

Two Way Mirror Kemptown On Sunday 10 October, the Lantern Carnival Theatre stages Arthur Miller’s “Two Way Mirror”, a double bill of short postponed plays for the same two actors. It looks at relationships, reality, and how we interact and view one another, doing so in a witty, fast-paced, dark but warm way. It is regarded by many as Miller›s only oblique artistic exploration of his failed marriage to Marilyn Monroe. The cast includes Eleanor Stourton and Nigel Barber. In “Elegy for a Lady”, a shopkeeper attempts to help a man seeking a gift for a dying woman, only for them both to discover something about themselves. “Some Kind of Love Story” is classic Americana with a twist – a Sam Spade-style detective drama turns psychological when a private investigator tasked with proving a miscarriage of justice realises the only person who knows the truth is an old flame whose emotional fragility plays itself out in multiple personalities. 10 October, 7.30pm Tickets £15/£13 concessions at lanterntheatrebrighton.co.uk The Lantern Theatre, 77 St James’s Street (on the corner of Rock Place)

Due to the complexity around planning public events and the extra requirements to keep everyone safe, Kemptown Carnival has had to sadly take the very difficult decision to postpone this year’s carnival. We understand for some this will be disappointing as this was going to be the warm-up to our 100th anniversary year and we have been working hard to do this. After looking at everything objectively, we’ve taken the decision to create a more comprehensive carnival for 2022, along with a greater emphasis on the lead-up to what is going to be a much better year for events. All registrations will be saved and carried over to next year. More details will be published on our website over the autumn, along with fundraising events and more information on what you can expect next year. We know this will be upsetting for our local communities, but we want to thank you for your support and can assure you this decision wasn’t taken lightly. It was taken to ensure we create the best ever carnival for you whilst celebrating our 100th year anniversary. Stay safe Carnival Team

Graham Gouldman The Big 10CC’s Graham Gouldman was Broadway Sing originally scheduled to play at St George’s Church in 2020. His performance has now been rescheduled to Thursday 7 October.

Music Theatre 2000, who are celebrating 21 years of presenting quality musical theatre and opera, present The Big Broadway Sing on 16th October at St Mary’s Church. The show will include chorus numbers from Broadway and West End shows, with an ensemble of more than 75 singers, and featuring songs from: West Side Story, Oklahoma, Something Rotten, The Lion King, Chicago, Curtains, A Chorus Line, Kiss Me Kate, Carousel, Titanic, and many more. The conductor is Simon Gray and there will be guest soloists. Saturday 16th October, 3pm & 7pm St Mary’s Church, St James’s Street

Graham was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014 and he started his Heart Full of Songs concerts for the pleasure of playing his songs in their simplest form, acoustically. His concert features 10CC classics such as “I’m Not in Love”, “Dreadlock Holiday” and “The Things We Do for Love”. He also sings his songs “Bus Stop”, which was a hit for The Hollies, and “For Your Love”, a hit for The Yardbirds, along with some new material. Graham said: “Acoustic performances always create a very intimate atmosphere where every song - which is what it’s all about - can truly be heard. It also gives me a chance to explain how the songs came about and something of the writing process.” 7.30pm, 7 October, St George’s Church; tickets from seetickets.com

Tickets: £15, available from ticketsource. co.uk/showtimeproductions

Fine Music for Free The Saturday Fine Music for Free recitals have returned to St Mary’s Church. On Saturday 9 October mezzo-soprano Thalie Knights and Nico de Villiers on piano perform “L’étranger”: a French musical journey exploring the fantastical and exotic, including Ravel’s “Shéhérazade”, Debussy’s “Chansons de Bilitis”, “Quatre poèmes hindous” by Delage and “Chansons” by Hahn. On Saturday 23 October, John Bruzon performs a piano recital, playing works by Mozart, Brahms, Debussy and Liszt. Both concerts are FREE at 6pm, St Mary’s Church, St James’s Street For more information visit stmaryschurchbrighton.org.uk/whats-on

Kemptown person… Maisie Gervais of Gourmaisie Maisie Gervais of local business Gourmaisie lives in Kemptown and is a freelance baker, providing food for entertainment. She offers sweet and savoury home-baked food, catering to all diets, with locally sourced ingredients. How did you come to set up Gourmaisie? Originally, Gourmaisie was set up as an Instagram account, so I had a space to archive all of my baking pictures. Then over lockdown, I created and designed my website, and have since been building my brand slowly through word of mouth. Tell us about the food you offer… There is no limit to what kind of food I offer – I do sweet and savoury, but at the end of the day I seek to provide food for any and all kinds of occasions. I take pride in being able to cater to dietary requirements from vegan and gluten-free to meaty and cheesy heaven, I think it’s important to have all bases covered and not restrict my business to just one thing. So, whether you’re just after a cheeky batch of cupcakes, a full spread of nibbles for hosting a drinks night, an easy meal that you can shove in the oven for a dinner party, or a fancy occasion cake, Gourmaisie is at your beck and call!

olate fudge icing turned out better than my usual cream cheese frosting. Other interesting assignments have included catering for our office Christmas do and supplying around 300 cupcakes for a college leavers party.

What is the most popular food that you provide?

What do you like to do when you’re not baking?

It is mostly birthday and occasion cakes that I get commissions for at the moment, but it has been said by many that my brownies and flapjacks are unbeatable…

That’s a hard one, as if I had it my way, I would never stop baking! In between working full time for local natural skincare company Balmonds and having Gourmaisie on the side, I enjoy sewing and crafting, and I also do lots of creative writing which you can explore on my website.

What is the most interesting assignment you’ve been given? So far, I would say the most challenging assignment was a three-tiered vegan and gluten-free birthday cake. It can be hard to get the flavours and textures right, so I was especially proud when the choc-

Madeira Drive footpath diversion A new boardwalk is being installed as part of the Black Rock regeneration works. This means: • the footpath on the beach running from the naturist beach access to the Volk’s workshop will be closed for three months • the footpath will be diverted along the south side of Madeira Drive parallel to the railway track.

This will be one of the last times to catch this special live show of his ‘An Orkney Triptych’ tour before he embarks on journeys anew. Erland Cooper will be supported by Japanese musician and synthesist Hinako Omori, who’s based in London. Her debut EP, Auraelia, was built from four years’ worth of instrumental demos, lyrics and field recordings that she was able to thematically link and mould into songs after experiencing “a strange period of having daily migraines with auras for a month”. She said: “The physical reaction I was experiencing from the auras – the haziness/blurriness/partial loss of sight and spots of light surrounding everyday vision – also seemed to reflect the emotions I was feeling at the time – confusion, lack of clarity, ambiguity, mixed feelings of hope and melancholy…” Saturday 16th October, doors 7pm, St George’s Church

Landbuild are continuing the vegetated shingle works. This means: • the footpath from Black Rock car park to Volk’s workshop will be diverted for four months • access to and from the naturist beach will be on the east side of the car park • the footpath will be diverted along the south side of Madeira Drive parallel to the railway track. Footpath diversion signage will be placed at each end of the diversion.

Kemptown’s Cup of Joe Not, perhaps, the name you’d expect for a café run by a Frenchman. But Georges set up this café about seven years ago, and has been serving Kemptownians since, which means cooking from fresh everything from goat’s cheese tart to full English breakfast to creative crepes - and back to Eggs Benedict. Not forgetting a variety of healthy salads.

It’s situated at the end of a row of shops on the north side of St George’s Road – an ideal spot for sunning oneself at a pavement table with that cup of Joe, or with a good range of teas, soft drinks and delish cakes.

the culinary trade, although he spent time in the fashion industry as well. And a stint with our very own Gordon Ramsay back in London in the noughties, who referred to him as D’Artagnan, doubtless with affection!

Ah but wait! – there are different interpretations of “cup of Joe”. When Georges chose this name for his café-to-be, it was more in the sense of a place to go to chat, as well as partake of refreshment. Georges is very much the “front of house” man and enjoys conversing with his customers, and seeing them chatting with each other. Believe me, he is surprisingly easy to talk to.

Hence Cup of Joe is just not what you might suppose from a café in Kemptown. The menu is extraordinarily varied, as can be seen from the website: https://cupofjoebrighton.co.uk/ As Covid restrictions lifted, Georges has taken on more staff. He ensures they get proper training – as baristas so that we can all enjoy a perfect flat white – and in the kitchen, as we might observe when the door is left open! Are they also chosen for their fondness for conversation? – probably, they certainly join in to help create that good vibe we can appreciate along with our meal.

As well as being full of surprises. He did come to Britain from France, in fact from Lorraine, the home of the quiche. But his parents were from Sicily, and the food and culture at home when he was young was Italian. Small wonder he was destined for

Trees of life QUEENS PARK

Whenever people are asked what they value most about Brighton & Hove’s open spaces, trees generally feature high on their lists, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Chairman of the Friends of Queen’s Park. That’s certainly true for users of Queen’s Park, although, it has to be said, some of us barely notice them until one is toppled by a storm or becomes infected by killer diseases such as Dutch Elm or Ash Dieback. Then everyone sits up and pays attention and wants to see effective action taken to ensure that we have a legacy to pass on to future generations.

If successful, the planting will consider future changes to the Quiet Garden envisaged in the Conservation Management Plan. The scheme requires applicants to match fund the grant with volunteer input over the next three years. Saturday 16th October 2021

The Friends of Queen’s Park teamed up with the Craven Vale Community Association and put in a joint bid to plant 24 trees worth just under £14,500. The Craven Vale element is for ten walnut trees to supple-

ment those already in place, while Queen’s Park is hoping for hazel and birch to be planted in the area between the clock tower and the Quiet Garden, which, in the past, has been a site for anti-social behaviour.

Vintage Fair

Which brings me onto our own efforts to add to the variety of trees in Queen’s Park. The Forestry Commission launched the Urban Tree Challenge Fund in April to support the planting of 44,000 large ‘standard’ trees over a two-year period starting towards the end of this year.

The Quiet Garden from the clock tower

R u by HE RT

The Georgians and Victorians did their bit by planting 125 varieties of elms in the city, some of which can be found in Queen’s Park. Brighton and Hove City Council’s arborists have worked hard to keep our collection intact as far as possible – even if that has called for swift action to fell infected trees and replace them with more robust varieties. This means that there will be plenty of examples in the country’s National Elm Collection - a status given to the city in 1998 - to pass on to future residents.

17 Classical music in Queen’s Park…

Proposal for Music and Wine at new mast St Luke’s A new application has been made by CK Hutchison Networks for the installation of a 15m mast in Eastern Road, on the corner of Tillstone Street, following the refusal in July of a previous application for a 20m mast.

We are delighted to be back with live concerts. We are still operating some distancing guidelines and it’s possible to reserve physically distanced seating, please see our website for more details. We have two concerts this month.

Hutchison need the mast to provide the latest 5G mobile phone technology and say a site has been selected on a wide stretch of pavement which will not impede pedestrian flow. The 20m mast was refused by the council as they said it would appear “overly visually prominent within an otherwise open and spacious part of the streetscene, creating undue visual clutter and appearing as an incongruous addition causing harm to the character and appearance of the streetscene and detrimental to the setting of the Queen’s Park Conservation Area”. Hutchison are hoping that a five-metre reduction in the mast height will address these concerns. The application can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps.brighton-hove. gov.uk (BH2021/02984).

Ivana Peranic and Rachel Fryer

On Friday 1st October cellist Ivana Peranic and pianist Rachel Fryer will collaborate with the Illuminate Collective to perform work by female contemporary composers alongside Amy Beach and Rebecca Clarke. And on Friday 15th October we welcome for the first time pianist Dinara Klinton who will perform works by Russian composers including Taneyev, Lyadov, Glinka/Balakirev and the more well-known Medtner, Rachmaninov and Scriabin’s stunning 9th sonata. Following that we will have a break of a few weeks during the season of the Brighton Early Music Festival and the next concert will be on Friday 12th November. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB, and start at 7.30pm unless otherwise stated. Tickets £7 / £5 under-25s / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, please visit www.musicandwineatstlukes.com or contact musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com.

19 News from Green councillor Clare Rainey…

This summer has been characterised by intense and changeable weather, and the gradual lifting of COVID restrictions.

The unusual weather patterns have highlighted the ongoing effects of climate change, as has the recent International Panel on Climate Change report, which makes it clear that we urgently need to reduce our carbon dioxide emissions globally. We can all take steps to reduce our personal carbon footprint, and during the summer I attended the launch of the Queen’s Park community composting scheme, run with Brighton and Hove Food Partnership. This will reduce the volume of waste being transported and incinerated, and provide residents who join the scheme with locally-produced garden compost. Another new initiative in the ward is the Brighton & Hove Wood Recycling Project (The Wood Store) which has recently moved to new premises on Edward Street. I supported The Wood Store with part of my ward budget to invest in refurbishment of the new premises, and in new workshop tools. The project offers work experience and skills training to disadvantaged people, and employment opportunities. Wood and timber products are re-used rather than entering the waste stream, and carbon emissions from harvesting, milling and transporting virgin wood are avoided. New timber is currently expensive and in short supply so The Wood Store is attracting local building companies as customers.

Please visit: https://www.facebook.com/ woodrecycling/ if you are interested in volunteering. The gradual lifting of COVID restrictions allowed Brighton Fringe Festival to go ahead this year, an amazing achievement given the challenges the arts and cultural sector have faced in the past 18 months. I and other members of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture committee met with organisers to discuss better coordination between council departments so next year’s Fringe Festival can run more efficiently. I also organised a meeting of residents who regularly use Queen’s Park as an opportunity for people to voice the improvements they would like to see in the park, and am meeting with officers to discuss these. Finally I joined a session at Brighton Multicultural Women’s Cycle Club, which teaches cycling skills to local migrant women. The Club is a much-needed response to lockdown, meeting the need to socialise, integrate and be physically active, and gives women the skills and confidence to use cycling as a means of transport around the city. If you are interested in getting involved please contact: cicelylloyd@trustdevcom.org.uk Cllr Clare Rainey Clare.Rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk

23 An update from the Hanover Community Association…

Hanover Community Association Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally.

A wet and windy 30th July saw us relocate our garden indoors to enjoy The Rumboogie Allstars Blues Band. Another sell-out, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Our final gig was 20th August and featured School’s Out, who entertained our Hanover residents with a powerful medley of pop songs we had forgotten we loved - it was good to see all ages singing and bopping along. A big thank you to all our Hanover residents who supported both the local bands and the HCA to make the evenings so successful. Now school’s back in, we hope to resume our regular programme of classes and sessions. Hanover Breastfeed Drop-in on Tuesdays, Baby Sensory and Musical Bumps are returning shortly, please check Facebook for updates. After the success of the ‘Gigs in the Garden’ we are looking forward to welcoming back indoor activities later in the year, such as baby sales and makers fairs. Keep your eyes peeled for those or email us to join a waiting list.

HANOVER

One of the most missed things for many during the pandemic was the opportunity to hear and see live music performed in person. With this in mind, the HCA collaborated with the local talent of Hanover to try and rectify the situation. 23rd July saw our first ‘Gig in the Garden’ with bands The Five Believers and Friends Without Benefits. It was a sell-out, and the consensus was that it was great to be outside, enjoying good music with other Hanover residents.

25 News from the council…

A new album from a local record label working with artists in recovery…

Valley Gardens We Are Not Saints Survey Brighton-based record label We Are Not Saints helps artists in recovery from addiction to record music and develop creatively, pushing their career forward to what it otherwise would have been, before they found drink and drugs, and many have gone on to lead better lives. Chris De Banks

The first two phases of Valley Gardens have seen improvements to open spaces and transport corridors between St Peter’s Church and Old Steine, including new cycle lanes, priority lanes for public transport and landscaped spaces. Work on phase three, from the Old Steine to the Palace Pier, is due to begin in 2022. The council are asking people to complete an online survey about their experiences of using the space since the £11 million project was completed last summer. There are questions about what people think of its new features, how they use the space and how they travel through the area.

The label is headed by Chris De Banks who has been in recovery for five years himself. One artist working under their wings is Milky, a rising rap artist who writes honest bars about the highs and lows of his life, using his recovery story as fuel to create music. The importance of the label in Milky’s life is clear: “If I didn’t know the guys at We Are Not Saints, I don’t know where I’d be - probably floating around Brighton, not doing recovery properly; I’d be a bit lost. My confidence is boosting with every gig and everything we do.”

The survey is open until Sunday 24 October at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ parking/valley-gardens-phases-1-and-2

Milky’s debut album, “The Milky Way”, was released in September – find out more at wearenotsaints.co.uk

They are carrying out regular uniformed patrols and plain clothes operations, and working with partner agencies to address any problems arising from specific addresses. Our PCSOs try to attend resident meetings to provide advice and to be informed of new issues. Residents recognise them as a friendly, visible asset to the community. The collection of refuse in Hanover & Elm Grove has long been tricky. A one-size all approach does not work across the ward with its mix of narrow streets and terraced properties, and few front gardens for storage. We are often contacted about inaccessibility due to bins blocking pavements, and locating suitable spaces for communal bins is a challenge. In the coming months the council will be consulting on what works best for which street. Officers are also preparing a feasibility study for the introduction of a food waste collection service and looking at increasing the range of materials collected for recycling. Residents are increasingly complaining about noise from student houses. Both Brighton and Sussex Universities have dedicated email addresses where such

Councillors agreed £200k for street tree planting. They are also using potential match-funding. Officers are looking at the agricultural estate to identify potential planting sites, which will tie-in with the Whole Estate Plan. We are hoping that the Policy and Resources committee on 7th October will agree on the allocation of Carbon Neutral Funding for planting, which is coupled with grant income, and will enable the council to get large numbers of trees planted across the city. New trees have so far appeared on Islingword Road, Elm Grove, Pankhurst, and the corner of Totland and Hartington, thanks to the efforts of residents. We are concerned to see a recent planning application for the Montreal Arms on Albion Hill, which proposes the removal of the unique green ceramic tiles, and other works. Ward councillors have been in touch with planning officers to enquire if the tiles are protected. The planning number is: BH2021/03088 (via the BHCC planning portal) which gives more detail, and where you can lodge your views. Drop me an email, or tweet me: @steffingtonheg

29 News from Green councillor for Preston Park Siriol Hugh-Jones…

From ponds to parking and more... Councillors and officers alike were horrified by the pictures of unauthorised parking over the weekend of 21-22 August when the Thai Festival was in place, with the area next to the community garden effectively being turned into a car park, and other vehicles parked on grass verges and outside the fencing for the festival site. Worryingly, there were also cars attempting to enter the park just as the junior parkrun was getting under way. None of this was sanctioned by the Council and ward councillors have been assured by officers that strict conditions will be imposed in future, should the Thai Festival wish to return. In the meantime, if residents see unauthorised vehicles parked in Preston Park (or elsewhere), the number to ring is 0345 603 5469 (option 2).

31 News from the council…

Elm disease infects remaining Preston Park Twin Brighton & Hove City Council are extremely sad to report that the remaining Preston Park Twin elm tree – one of the oldest in the world - has become infected with elm disease.

Unfortunately, girdling may not save the twin as the risk of this infection spreading will continue until the end of this growing season and possibly the next two. Small, infected branches have already been removed and the girdled limb will also be removed once elm disease season has finished this year. The previous twin was felled in December 2019 after it was infected with elm disease. Despite efforts to manage the spread, the disease had reached the roots, making felling inevitable. The Preston Park elms are believed to have been planted 400 years ago. Elms remain the dominant tree throughout the city, with an estimated growing population of more than 17,000. Losses of trees to elm disease have been manageable over the years thanks to a council-led control campaign. However, the battle seems to be getting harder recently for a number of reasons. One of the most likely ways for a tree to become infected is via beetles breeding

FIVEWAYS

Emergency work to try and stop the disease spreading started immediately after it was discovered and careful monitoring is now being carried out. The infection has caught hold on a specific large limb within the canopy of the tree, which arboriculture experts have now ‘girdled’. Girdling means removing a section of bark around the complete circumference of the affected limb to hopefully stop the spread of the disease to other parts of the tree.

on elm logs. These logs may have been brought in from other parts of Sussex where there has been a massive rise in trees becoming infected. In recent years, there has also been a rapid increase in the number of wood-burning stoves being sold in the area, increasing the risk of contaminated wood coming into the city. The council asks you not to buy any logs for winter fuel if the supplier cannot guarantee that the wood isn’t elm and not to bring any elm timber into the city for use as garden ornaments, seating, etc. The council’s arboriculture team offers a free inspection of firewood and other timber. If the wood is elm, the council will dispose of it and give you a similar quantity free of charge. Contact them at: arboriculture@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

33 Stanford Avenue Methodist Church are looking forward to conducting same-sex weddings…

Good news from the Methodist Church On 30th June 2021 the Methodist Conference, the national governing body for Methodism in Great Britain, made a momentous decision, following years of prayerful consideration, to allow same sex marriages to be conducted on Methodist premises or by Methodist office holders.

Stanford Avenue Methodist Church Council, which is a representative group of our members, recently voted unanimously for same sex weddings to be held at the church as soon as it is legally possible, and our minister Rev Dan Woodhouse is excited at the prospect of conducting marriage ceremonies for same sex couples. Our church is a wonderful light spacious building with a mix of modern and original features which has been part of the community for over 120 years sharing God’s love with everyone who enters the doors. A warm welcome awaits anyone wanting to come to any of our services and activities and find out more about the work of the church. Following the Conference decision the Rev Sam McBrately, chair of the Dignity and Worth campaign, said when interviewed that “….. the Methodist Church was taking a courageous step to recognise and affirm the value and worth of LGBTQ+ relationships” or, as was said on Facebook when the decision was made at Stanford

Freedom of conscience clauses mean ministers can of course choose whether to conduct such weddings. Premises and Ministers have to be registered with the Registrar General for England and Wales and the church is awaiting the legal guidance on this which will be available very shortly.

Avenue, that “love is love no matter who it’s between” and “true Church inclusion”. For generations same sex couples have been denied the opportunity to take the step of marriage with their partners in a church setting but at Stanford Avenue we feel that those people who wish to be married in a church should be able to, no matter who they want to make that commitment with. If you are planning to get married and are considering Stanford Avenue Methodist Church as the venue, then your first contact needs to be with the minister of our church. The Rev Dan Woodhouse is looking forward to hearing from you at revdanwoodhouse@gmail.com

As life starts to return to ‘normal’, we’re delighted to report that we are able to resume our tree planting this winter season. In 2019 we planted 13 new trees including oaks, sweetgum, juneberries, cherry and pear. They are all doing very well thanks to our team of local residents who water them through the summer months. We now have funds and pledges for the remaining 50 trees and will plant 20 more this winter. We also have plans for a wildflower bed.

New interest in the healing powers of mushrooms It is probable that it was fungi breaking down rocks into earth that eventually created the soil allowing the evolution of plant life. A mushroom’s outer form or ‘fruiting body’ merely crowns what is underneath it. There is a complex and intricate mycelial network that unites entire ecosystems, and the largest terrestrial organism by mass is a honey mushroom found in the mountainous forested regions of the US. Fungi produce compounds that lab technicians still cannot reproduce, and we have barely scraped the surface of what we could learn from them. You may have seen recent reports on serious research into the medicinal use of chemicals found in mushrooms. These substances, called psilocybin, are being used to treat conditions ranging from drug or alcohol dependence to depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. While the practical implications of this research are still to be fully confirmed, it is timely to remember that other cultures have long been harnessing the healing power of mushrooms, and we now have the advantage of understanding the science behind how they can benefit the human system.

the aftermath of a pandemic and also as part of a preventative approach – if your internal health is good, your external defences stand a better chance of adapting appropriately to whatever is encountered in its environment. As ever, this does not mean we can all rush out to the nearest forest and start filling bags with unidentified fungi – aside from the potential illegality, it is absolutely essential that a reputable and reliable source is used or disastrous effects could ensue, possibly even fatal. If you are interested in benefitting from the compounds found in medicinal mushrooms, this is best achieved by using products that have been subjected to rigorous testing, and which are supervised by a trained practitioner. 41 Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra is back at Brighton Dome…

New season for Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra has returned to live concerts after a year of pandemic postponements. Before lockdown the orchestra pulled off a major coup in appointing one of the world’s leading musicians, Joanna MacGregor CBE, as their new Music Director. COVID delayed her first season, but one year on her exciting programme is being re-instated at Brighton Dome Concert Hall and other venues across the city.

Joanna said: “The past months have made us realise how important live performance is, and we’re thrilled to be back, sharing a glorious range of music with you. The Brighton Philharmonic has been performing at the Dome for nearly a century, and their concerts are for everyone: for classical concert-goers and students, young people and families.” Concerts in the first part of the season include “Playing with Fire”, a feast of Baroque music celebrating the elements. It’s directed from the harpsichord by Robert Howarth, joined by the great Canadian soprano Gillian Keith (7 November, Brighton Dome Concert Hall).

In December, there’s “A Celtic Christmas” - a fabulous first collaboration between Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra and the great Kathryn Tickell, the foremost exponent of Northumbrian pipes (5 December, Brighton Dome Concert Hall). There will be two festive performances of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, accompanied by the BPO Brass Quintet (18 December), and on New Year’s Eve at Brighton Dome, there’s an afternoon of “Viennese Classics”, featuring soprano Rebecca Bottone. 43 News from the council…

Electoral wards consultation The Local Government Boundary Commission wants to hear what the city’s communities think about their local area. A consultation on proposals for the city council’s electoral wards is running until 1 November 2021.

Boundary reviews help make sure that councillors represent about the same number of electors; ward arrangements help the council work effectively; and ward patterns reflect community ties and identities. The commission will use local views to help it draw up proposals for new council ward boundaries. Council leader Cllr Phélim Mac Cafferty strongly encouraged residents to take part: “The geographical areas which are used to elect city councillors often have important and historic community ties and hold a place in residents’ hearts. And we want to see these areas, or wards as they are called, faithfully represent how people think and feel about their community. It’s really important that how geographical areas are grouped together for elections makes sense to the people living there.”

GENERAL

The commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries, and the last review took place in 2003. Since that time Brighton & Hove’s communities have changed, and the population has grown.

To take part in the consultation, visit: consultation.lgbce.org.uk/node/29490

Vaccination centre at Churchill Square Brighton & Hove’s large-scale vaccination centre has moved from the Brighton Centre to Churchill Square shopping centre, into the former Topshop store. Free parking for one hour in Churchill Square’s Orange car park (Churchill 1) in Regency Road East is available for people attending the new site for their jabs over the coming weeks and months. The new centre also offers walk-in vaccinations for 16 and 17 year olds. Alistair Hill, the council’s director of public health, said: “It’s important that everyone takes up the vaccine offer, especially

because so many more of us are mixing socially again. We all need to consider the vulnerable people in our community who are most at risk of becoming ill if they catch Covid. Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and others.” To book your Covid-19 vaccination appointment at the new Brighton & Hove vaccination centre call 119, visit nhs.uk/covidvaccine, or walk in any time between 8.30am and 7pm.

PPE recycling scheme An innovative scheme to collect and recycle facemasks, gloves and other PPE has been launched in Brighton & Hove. The council has joined forces with recycling company Reworked to provide PPE recycling bins and hand sanitiser stations in busy areas of the city centre, including the popular SEA LIFE Centre, Komedia and i360.

The bins have been funded from the government and European Union’s ‘Welcome Back’ fund, which aims to ensure city centres and seaside resorts are ready to welcome back visitors safely as lockdown restrictions ease. Councillor Jamie Lloyd, deputy chair of the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee, said: “Facemasks have played a vital role in helping to keep us safe during the past year, but sadly they have also added to the litter on our streets, particularly in busy areas of the city. It’s a particular concern on our seafront and beaches where the masks can make their way into the sea, causing further harm to our precious marine wildlife. But we are delighted to be working with Reworked to collect used and unwanted masks and other PPE, removing them from the waste stream for recycling. 49 News from the council…

New copper roof Cycle lane enforcement for Studio Theatre

New legislation came into force last June which means councils can now use cameras as evidence to issue Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) by post to people who park in cycle lanes where there are currently restrictions on parking or loading. Currently, these include Church Street, London Road, Lewes road, Preston Road and West Street.

Built in 1935, the Studio Theatre (previously known as the Pavilion Theatre) in New Road was originally used as a supper room for the Corn Exchange and later converted to a theatre in the 1950s. The Studio Theatre stands out with its unique architectural features and different styles, including turrets and arched windows that mimic the Royal Pavilion nearby. Brighton & Hove’s planning committee approved the proposals to provide a new copper roof on 1 September. In recent years the roof has been patched up, but the copper continued to fracture and is now too fragile to repair. The pyramid-shaped roof will initially have a dramatic appearance as the new metal will be a bright copper colour. This will dull to a soft brown within the first year and continue to change back to the soft, mint green of the existing roof as the metal naturally ages.

From October the council are issuing PCNs to anyone caught on camera parking illegally in these locations. The PCN charge is £70, or £35 if paid within the first 14 days. Following this, the council will be looking at introducing the enforcement criteria at more sites across Brighton & Hove. The council are also expanding their enforcement of illegal parking in city bus stops.

It is important that the city’s cycle lanes are free for people cycling to use, but sometimes cyclists can find them obstructed by people who have parked inconsiderately. People who park in the lanes are given a short grace period to allow for pick-ups and drop offs only.

A new copper roof on Brighton’s historic Studio Theatre will see the Grade II listed building restored to its former glory as part of Brighton Dome’s major refurbishment.

GENERAL

Brighton & Hove City Council have begun taking action to reduce the number of people parking illegally in some of the city’s cycle lanes.

51 Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep on the history of Brighton’s Streamline Taxis…

A Brighton success story Who wouldn’t like a ride in one of these glamorous, gleaming taxis, with a uniformed driver at the wheel?

All the drivers in the picture look happy and for good reason, as by 1959 Brighton Streamline had been in business for over 20 years. It was an excellent example of a successful co-operative. Back in 1936 the majority of taxi businesses in Brighton and Hove were one-man operations, struggling to make a profit in the face of the private hire firms offering new cars and cheaper prices. That year the individual taxi drivers formed themselves into the separate associations of Hove Streamline and Brighton Streamline. In Brighton, under the leadership of Gordon Moody, around 100 taxi owners agreed to sell their vehicles and buy 33 new 14 HP Morris cars, supplied on lease, which were to be operated day and night on a rota. The drivers would then share the profits, after deductions of tax and other expenses. It took less than a year for the Brighton association to dominate the market. Its first annual report indicates that Streamline operated 73% of the town’s taxis and the company moved from North Street, Brighton, to larger premises at Middle Street. Having the exclusive rights to trade on Brighton Station’s forecourt must have

been an important factor in Streamline’s success and the company paid a premium of £365 per year to the Southern Railway Company for this. The Streamline model was rapidly adopted by other taxi owners across the country and associations in Southampton, Leamington Spa, Bristol, Blackpool, York, Guildford and Leeds were all formed in the late 1930s. The owners behind Streamline knew they were making history, and their scrapbook and collections of photographs, business cards and flyers record their achievements. The Keep is the fortunate holder of this archive (ref AMS/6858), which includes photographs of the first 13 cars (bought from the Morris Motors factory at Cowley, Oxfordshire) and a summary of tariffs and locations of telephone boxes (from where the customer called the taxi). In the collection you’ll even find the words of the Streamline Association song. But to see that, you’ll have to visit the archive! www.thekeep.info

These are some of Brighton’s Streamline Taxis, photographed outside the Pavilion entrance by an Argus photographer in June 1959 (ref ARG/3/8002). The picture didn’t appear in the newspaper that week so we can only guess that it was taken to mark a special occasion, perhaps a landmark number of cars added to the fleet. The proud driver in the foreground seems to be attaching the Streamline badge to the front of his cab. His shoes almost outshine the car’s front grille!

55 A social club in Sussex…

Brighton news…

The Group

Brighton Half-Marathon

There are plenty of things to do in Sussex. It’s just a matter of knowing where to find them – so says the founder of a Sussex club for unattached people. The Group was started in 2006 and has welcomed single people, aged 50 plus, ever since. Well, until Covid changed everything.

This year’s Brighton Half-Marathon will be run on 10th October. It was originally scheduled for the end of June but had to be postponed due to Covid restrictions.

In March 2020, like many clubs, The Group stopped meeting. But now that regulations have been relaxed, The Group’s social diary is already filling up. And in October it opens its doors again to new members.

There are hundreds of events every year, each one arranged by The Group’s own members. “That way we get loads of variety in the things we do. We have three holidays coming up, restaurant meals, theatre and walks, but an event can be as simple as making new friends by meeting in a coffee shop. It’s all about getting out, being with people, and having fun. We are definitely not a dating organisation. Some members have got together of course, and some have married, but our target is just to help people kickstart their social lives.” The Group has a website, www.thegroup.org.uk, and there’s

GENERAL

Tricia Bentley explains how The Group operates: “We have venues in five Sussex towns - Worthing, Burgess Hill, Brighton, Horsham and Lewes - and each of those venues hosts a club night every month.”

It’s the 31st year of the race, organised by local charity The Sussex Beacon who support a specialist HIV care centre in Brighton. It’s now one of the largest running events in the south-east. The race starts at 9am on Madeira Drive, close to the Steve Ovett statue. The route heads east towards Roedean School, then back west looping around The Level and along the seafront as far as Hove Lagoon before heading east again to the finish on Madeira Drive. There will be some road closures on the day – see brightonhalfmarathon.com for further information.

59 News of a sculpture based on Brighton dolphins…

New sculpture in Norfolk Square Norfolk Square Gardens, the community garden square just off Western Road, Brighton, is the home of a major new piece of public art in Brighton and Hove.

The sculpture, “Waves of Compassion” by Steve Geliot, was unveiled on 27 August. It is formed from the three original Old Steine “dolphins” designed by Amon Henry Wilds as part of the 1846 Victoria Fountain, now re-imagined for the 21st century. This type of stylised dolphin has been associated with Brighton for centuries and two still appear on the city’s coat of arms. In the 1990s the original “dolphins” were found to be structurally unsafe, unable to hold up the massive concrete bowl of the fountain. New castings were made for the Old Steine and originals stored at Stanmer – until now. In this inspiring new work, the dolphins support a wave of water with their massive tails, on which float one of four symbolic vessels, which will be changed over from time to time. These vessels include a container ship losing its load, an ancient coracle with a mysterious cargo, a fishing trawler and a life raft, each wreck prompting different ideas about our interaction with the sea. Sculptor Steve Geliot was inspired by the story hidden behind the historic ”dolphins”. He said, “I was intrigued to discover that

the ‘dolphins’ were actually based on the ‘great fish’ in the Jonah and the Whale story, illustrated in an old Dutch painting by Pieter Lastman. A key theme in Jonah’s story is compassion. It seemed to me that compassion as a theme, and the image of the wave, had great relevance to all of us in the face of what we have all been experiencing in this last year or so, and I wanted to explore four seasons of compassion.” A recent crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to create a beautiful setting for the sculpture surpassed its original target of £2,000. The donations are being used to line the piazza area either side of the sculpture with large sturdy containers, filled with green plants, visually connecting the piazza with the gardens below. At the top of the square, a new flowerbed will frame views of the sculpture from within the gardens. Speaking for the Norfolk Square Group, Keith Hipwood said: “It’s incredibly exciting for our community to see this major work of art, with deep roots in the history and culture of Brighton, coming to Norfolk Square Gardens.”

Time for Dementia

Martlets story features in art installation

The Time for Dementia project, supported by Alzheimer’s Society, pairs families affected by dementia with undergraduate students, helping to better educate them about life with dementia and the challenges that come with it. Brighton and Sussex Medical School medical students will be taking part and Alzheimer’s Society are now seeking families in the area who want to make a difference to training health professionals. Time for Dementia is a fantastic way for the next generation of healthcare professionals to gain first-hand knowledge of what it’s like living with dementia. If you would like to know more about the project, or you know someone with dementia and a family carer who would like to take part, please get in touch with us at timefordementia@alzheimers.org.uk or call 07483 137539. More information can also be found at alzheimers.org.uk/ timefordementia.

The Gratitude project is a nationwide art installation, featuring stories from the frontline of healthcare provision during the pandemic. Martlets has been invited to join as the voice of hospices who all experienced working with Covid-19 alongside NHS colleagues. The installation consists of 51 ‘Gratitude’ sculptures featuring the work of professional artists to pay tribute to the ongoing courage and dedication of NHS staff and key workers. The artworks will be displayed in public spaces in London, Manchester and Edinburgh before being sold to raise money for NHS Charities Together. Martlets features on the website www.thisisgratitude.co.uk and tells the story ‘Keep on Caring Through Covid’ from clinical nurse specialist Louise Gregory, read by Martlets Ambassador DJ Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim). Louise describes how her team had to quickly grasp the challenges of Covid and keep going the extra mile to do the best for their patients. The beautiful sculpture ‘A Hug for the World’ by artist Judith Berrill, who lives in Hove, is linked with Martlets’ story. You can find out how to support Martlets at www.martlets.org.uk/donate

A forthcoming exhibition by local artists...

Lockdown artwork at Brighton Dome

Elemental

Jo Delafons Aftermath Seafront by Graham Cameron

Cameron’s artwork will go on display in the venue’s Founders Room from 26 to 31 October. Alongside familiar scenes of the city, Cameron uses colourful motifs to describe his feelings. He says: “I’ve worked at Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival for 21 years, and during furlough I re-connected to the other version of me - the artist. I found myself drawing every day as a way to express how the pandemic was personally affecting me but also how I saw the outside world unfolding from the safety of my lockdown caravan.” Cameron’s artwork will be for sale via an online auction (details at brightondome.org), with 10% going to Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival’s charity. The Art of G Brighton Dome Founders Room, Church Street, BN1 1UE 11am - 3pm, 26 - 31 October 2021, free admission

Local artists Kate Scott (painter) and Jo Delafons (sculptor) both independently found solace and nourishment being out in nature and developed a friendship over lockdown. Their upcoming exhibition, “Elemental”, explores their experience of being outdoors and mindful in nature whilst also reflecting their inner emotions. Kate Scott’s abstract paintings use broad brushstrokes and veils of layered colour, evoking liminal spaces, shifting light, the buffeting of wind, or changing rhymes of water. The fragile build and precarious balance of Jo Delafons’ constructions reflects the delicate balance we live in with nature and our impact on it. “Elemental” runs from Tuesday 19th October to Sunday 24th October at Gallery 40, Gloucester Road, Brighton (5 mins walk from Brighton Station), 11am-6.30pm (Sunday 24th October 11am-4pm).

GENERAL

Over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, Brighton Dome employee Graham Cameron produced a series of striking illustrations detailing his experience of lockdown, the impact of Covid-19 on the arts and his time furloughed from work.

We’ve probably all felt the pull of nature while cooped up during lockdown. Artists are perhaps luckier than most in being able to distil something of that experience and process it through their work.

69 If you need an odd job doing, TaskHopper can help…

Local business…TaskHopper Josh Fozard left BHASVIC last year and has since set up a new business, TaskHopper, with fellow students Lewis Callard and Finn Pettigrew. TaskHopper provides a service for locals to find help with any task or odd job. Josh tells us more… Why did you decide to set up your own business?

Users post their tasks on the site, choosing their own price and task date, which are then displayed to our Taskers How does TaskHopper work? TaskHopper delivers a service to two different types of users. The first group includes anyone looking for help with odd jobs they have around the house and the second are people looking for some additional work. Users post their tasks on the site, choosing their own price and task date, which are then displayed to our Taskers who can apply freely to different tasks. What sort of tasks can you help people with? TaskHopper allows its users to post any task, so long as they are not dangerous or inappropriate. The most common tasks we receive are things like gardening, painting or tutoring, but you could even hire a chef for your BBQ, any task is possible.

Josh (centre) with Finn and Lewis

You also enjoy helping out in the community. Tell us about that… We believe the TaskHopper platform has the potential to be a great asset to the local community. Not only do we bring locals together to help each other, but our platform gives us a great opportunity to inspire people to help out around Brighton and Hove. Recently we challenged ourselves to clean up our biggest local parks, but this is just the first of a series of challenges we plan on completing to help the community. Tune in to our social media to catch more of us in the coming weeks. How is the business going so far? Great! We’ve just managed to launch our website after months of development. Our website allows us to make the whole process secure and fast, so we are looking forward to showing it to more users. For more information, visit taskhopper. co.uk or email support@taskhopper.co.uk

GENERAL

As students we knew finding a job could be almost impossible and TaskHopper provided a solution that could also ease the stresses of daily adult life. The adventure of creating something completely new and bringing it into the world was something that always appealed to us, and although the challenges of starting a business are diverse and have tested us in many ways, we haven’t looked back since.
