Eltenton’s Stores, on the corner of Trafalgar Street and York Place, was a very old-established business. E Hoadley founded it as a grocery and post office in 1868, when the rest of York Place was all private houses up to The Northern Hotel at 31 York Place (now The Hobgoblin). In the 1880s H Eltenton took over and the family business survived for many years, but closed down not long after the photograph was taken. Extra storey for site of former Red Lion pub Planning permission has been granted for an additional storey above 99-100 North Road, to create two flats with terraces, and extensions to the first and mezzanine floors for office space.

9 Lavender Jones sent us these great photos of former lodges at Queen’s Park…
This postcard taken c1890s shows a man pushing a pram, an unusual sight in those days. Behind him is a creeper covered building and side entrance to what was ‘Egremont Lodge’. no doubt worked on Queens Park. ‘Egremont Lodge’ was one of three at each entrance to the park, now all gone. There were only three rooms and a family of five lived there for several decades.

13 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…
WARNING: This month’s article might read as if it has been written by those grumpy old men from the Muppet Show, but once in a while it is good therapy to let loose, writes Geoffrey Bowden, Treasurer of the Friends of Queen’s Park.
FIVEWAYS
Last year the Council launched a consultation on dealing with graffiti and tagging. As I write, the results of that consultation are awaiting to be laid before the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee. Under the rules governing these things, no one outside the Council was allowed a quick peep under the wraps to see what is being proposed, so what follows is pure speculation. First, judging by September’s Keep Brighton and Hove Tidy campaign, we cannot expect any new money to tackle the city’s endemic spread of tagging and unsightly graffiti. Apart from supplying the materials and protective gloves, the Council will be looking to community power to remove the majority of the tags seen in our composite photograph taken in and around the park. The exception is you can still call on Cityclean to remove anything that’s offensive and tagging on council-owned property. I am hoping that includes communal bins, a personal bugbear of mine. They act as spray-can-merchant magnets. Private property owners, whether that’s homes, retail outlets or business premises will be expected to pay for the services of private firms to handle the clean-up. Similarly, operators of public facilities, such as bus and telephone companies will need to be pressed to remove graffiti from their property too. Which brings me to volunteer power. The Friends of Queen’s Park and the Friends of the Pepperpot rely on local people to help keep the park and surrounding
QUEENS PARK
Why don’t you just tag along?
areas clean. But here’s the rub. Currently the Government’s new Covid restrictions mean that clean-up blitzes will need to be restricted to no more than six people at a time. This will limit the amount of tag removal that can be achieved on any one day. It will probably mean packs of six working in different parts of the park, rather than a larger number focussing on, say, the children’s playground – a regular target for the taggers. The long and short of it is that it will be up to local Friends groups to keep plugging away organising, often with the support of local councillors, supervised clean up drives. To do that we need a pool of willing volunteers. So do get in touch: http:// www.fqpbrighton.net/contact-us/ if you can spare time to help out.

5G Mast for Marine Drive allowed...
New 5G mast proposed
An appeal has been allowed by the Planning Inspector for a 20m 5G phone mast and associated equipment to be installed on the south side of Marine Drive, opposite the Courcels flats at the bottom of Arundel Street, to replace the existing 15m mast and provide improved 5G coverage for the area. The planning application was refused by Brighton & Hove City Council in September 2019 on the grounds that the mast and associated cabinets would appear overly visually prominent and create undue visual clutter within the streetscene and the Kemptown Conservation Area. The council had received 91 objections to the mast. However, Planning Inspector Guy Davies has allowed an appeal against the council’s decision, saying that the installation would not interrupt key views of any listed buildings or their settings as it would be of a slim profile, positioned some distance away and located on the opposite side of Marine Drive from them. He said that any limited harm to heritage assets would be outweighed by the benefits of improved wireless communications. In answer to concerns about the potential effects on human health of a 5G mast, he said that the proposal would comply with guidelines published by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).
A planning application has been submitted to the council for a phone mast on the south side of Eastern Road/Edward Street.
The proposed site; © 2020 Google
A 20m mast with associated equipment is proposed by Hutchison 3G (H3G) to be located opposite Park Street and Tillstone Street. H3G say it’s needed to provide the latest 5G technology. They say that the proposed site is adjacent to a car park, on a stretch of Eastern Road where a number of commercial properties are found, thus minimising the number of residential properties overlooking the site. The council has received objections from neighbours who are concerned about the height of the mast, its effect on the conservation area and possible adverse health effects from 5G technology, particularly as it would be located within 200m of Queen’s Park Primary School and The Royal Spa Nursery School. The application can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk (BH2020/02228).

17 Meet the new Music Director of the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra…
Kemptown person… Joanna MacGregor How does it feel to be joining the Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra? I’m delighted – I’m only the fourth Music Director in nearly a hundred years! The orchestra celebrates its centenary in 2025. I’m following in the footsteps of Barry Wordsworth, who’s worked with them for thirty years; as a young pianist he conducted me playing concertos by Beethoven and Grieg, so it feels fun to take over the reins from him. I’ve run several music festivals over the years – most recently in Bath, and Dartington Summer School – so working closely with a well-established orchestra feels creative, adventurous and festive. I’ve lived in Kemptown for twenty years, and it’s great to be involved with Brighton venues and audiences. When does the orchestra plan to perform again? Sadly we had to postpone our full 20-21 symphonic season – it will happen next year instead – so we’re offering online talks and performances between now and Christmas, which you can see on our website; then chamber concerts early next year. We’ll resume big orchestral concerts as soon as we’re allowed back into Brighton Dome, with our regular large audience.

classical greats – large works by Mozart, Brahms, Elgar and Shostakovich - as well as film and folk, tango and jazz. Will you be performing with the orchestra yourself? Absolutely – I rather like directing from the piano. You’ll hear me in a range of work, from Mozart to Piazzolla, as well as collaborating with other artists. Did you manage to keep busy during lockdown? Well, one of my jobs is Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music – so that meant a lot of Zoom teaching! I plunged into all 32 of Beethoven’s sonatas, for a full cycle at Canterbury Festival this October – which is still going ahead, miraculously. And I enjoyed giving a few livestream recitals, as well as filmed performances: very much part of our lives now.
What can we expect in your next programme? There are several things going on now! Online, you can hear illustrated talks about Bach, Beethoven, Erik Satie, Piazzolla and For more information on the Nina Simone – a rich mix. 19 Catherine Considine looks back through the last few months…
From our Kemptown Correspondent KEMPTOWN
How are you? Hard, isn’t it? Scrolling through photos on my phone recently, I found a curious record of our corner of Kemptown slamming into lockdown and slowly emerging. I sense a forced jollity in March as I stomp around the house in a swimming hat, unable to swim in the sea. And endless shots of the dog wandering down narrow pathways on the Downs as we attempt to cheerily avoid people on our daily walk. Come Easter there is a frenzy to a new baking habit. Supermarkets declare a shortage of flour and yeast so alongside the obligatory banana loaf shots are pictures of scavenged alternatives. A brown paper bag of 00 flour delivered in place of their normal pizzas from Woodbox, and a jewel-bright sack of gram flour bought from Emmanuel the Asian Grocer on the corner of our street. Avoiding supermarkets I find myself exploring locally. Just up from Emmanuel, Dubleaus, the veggie grocer starts a delivery service. - This is one is Knock-and-Drop. Says Mike to a delivery guy as he hands over a box. On my phone the memory is coloured bright. A snap of fruit and veg crates bursting with oranges, reds and greens. She’s got the bug. She says just bang the door and leave the box. Don’t wait. Late spring / early summer a friend drops the runts from his greenhouse by our door and we plant beans and tomatoes, courgettes and butternut squash. I venture as far as Bedford Hardware for string but somehow come home with ribbons. Photos show bare bamboo frames tied jauntily with yellow and pink bows.
Waiting. June, I creep back into the sea. A dip with friends at sunrise on the longest day. We meet in front of Beach Box under a flaming sky. We have flasks and cake and hope. July, August, September, I swim, we paint the sheds blue, and vegetables grow so big the ribbons all but disappear. Dubleaus moves four doors up the street to bigger space. My curiosity in Emmanuel’s store stretches to the spice shelves. Curries, chutneys and flatbreads pepper my phone album. How am I? The answer isn’t easy. But I have narrowed it down to this: I love where I am. And I love who I am with. I am happy. And I am grateful for the opportunity to see that. Catherine Considine

21 News from Labour councillor Theresa Fowler…
Councillor News for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward Tracey Hill and I have restarted our roving surgeries where we walk around the ward, and we ask residents to let us know of any issue that they would like us to look at. We usually do a litter pick and ask if there are any problem areas that need special attention. On a recent roving surgery, we met with the Hollingbury Park Tennis Club to learn about their fundraising drive to resurface the courts. They need to raise £25,000. Anyone can play on these courts for free, excluding on club allocated times, and it was great to hear that their membership had increased over Summer, and you can join the club at half price for the rest of the year. I really enjoy these walks around my ward meeting residents and seeing first-hand what issues are affecting them.

25 Meet a new resident of Fiveways…
Fiveways Face…Roz Swaffer Roz Swaffer lives in Grantham Road and is Company Manager at West Marine Services, Brighton’s one-stop shop for all boating requirements, based at Brighton Marina. How long have you lived in Fiveways? I’m now into my second week living in this part of Fiveways and have to say I’m loving the quietness of the area and the friendliness of neighbours. It clearly has a lovely, community spirit to it, which is what I came in search for when I decided to move. West Marine Services is a family-run business that’s been going for over 20 years now, providing a comprehensive range of boating services, for both in-the-water and boatyard settings. We’re proud main dealers for Volvo Penta, Yanmar and Mercury brands offering parts sales, service and repairs based out of Brighton but covering the South East. In terms of jobs we’d most likely carry out, think inboard and outboard engine servicing, general mechanical repairs, most electrics and plumbing, and yard maintenance work. What is your role in the company? I’ve just been promoted to Company Manager as part of an exciting restructure that also involved a couple of my colleagues being given shiny, new titles too. I take care of project management, the customer services experience and earn myself brownie points making a nice cuppa for my teammates who return to the workshop after a hard day or having been caught in the rain. Tell us more about West Marine Services…
Do you enjoy boating yourself? I’ve grown up around boats and the water, have an RYA Level 2 Certificate in Powerboating, and recently started my journey to become a more capable sailor, which began last autumn and is now set to continue. I’m also looking to become part of a local sailing crew over the coming months, so I can actually start learning the ropes properly. What do you like to do in your spare time? I’m very much into cycling daily and would opt to bike anywhere given half the chance. I enjoy discovering somewhere new (more at home these days than away for obvious reasons), and love cooking all sorts of world foods, with a particular penchant for something Lebanese, given my mixed heritage. Earlier this year, I began as a telephone volunteer for the intergenerational befriending charity Time to Talk Befriending and have been successfully paired with a lovely lady who just turned 90 earlier this month! 31 Councillor news from Steph Powell, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…
Hanover Councillor News It’s been a busy summer for the council. The Green Party were handed the administration following Labour resignations on 23rd July 2020, and the city has a minority Green council. As such councillors’ individual roles changed overnight.
The East Sussex Fire Authority had its meeting on 3rd September. A good number of residents completed the consultation. As a result of your responses, the authority considerably changed the recommendations to something more acceptable to Greens, Labour and the Fire Brigade Union. One proposal however suggested the fire service stop attending people trapped in lifts, and to stop attending birds trapped in netting. Greens successfully reversed these through amendments, and these services will now continue. Ward News: We held our first face-toface ward surgery on 12th September at the Phoenix Community Centre. Fingers-crossed we can continue.
Local residents who’ve worked tirelessly to have planters placed on corners off Elm Grove to stop cars accessing the pavement will finally have their efforts rewarded. The council have given the go-ahead and residents are working with Hanover Action to get this implemented. Please let us know if your road will benefit from this. I hope like me, you love the Valley Gardens transformation. We all value outside spaces, but anti-social behaviour and litter blight these spaces. We have set-up a new graffiti/tagging hotline: 01273 295063. And to coincide with the Great British September Clean, we invited everyone to take part in a city tidy-up between 14th and 28th September. This was kick-started by jet-washing some of the dirtiest streets. The city has much to offer and we want to attract visitors back. As part of our recovery a welcoming, clean city is essential. I am here to represent and assist in matters relating to the local area. Please feel free to drop me a line: steph.powell@brighton-hove.gov.uk. Mobile: 07795 335967.

33 An intriguing new novel based on a true story…
Murder in Hanover? Kemptown-based author Barry Silsby has recently published his first novel, “Young Murder?”, which fictionalises the true story of his great-grandmother’s alleged murder in Hanover in 1893. Where in Hanover did the alleged murder take place?
FIVEWAYS
It took place in 1893 in Whichelo Place. The novel is set all over Brighton but Hanover has the core of the action with ‘The Constant Service’ pub, Islingword Road and Grant Street all featuring as well as The Level and Queen’s Park close by. How did you discover the story?
HANOVER
This was a family legend about how my great-grandmother was burned to death following a fight with her lodger when an oil lamp was thrown but it was research in contemporary newspapers that revealed how big the news of it was at the time. Tell us more about the novel… It is a courtroom drama, a detective story and a family saga all in one. The main protagonists are twelve-year-old Louisa who was the only witness to the killing of her mother, Wheatley, the young Brighton detective who investigated the crime and, of course, the lodger who allegedly committed the murder. The novel is based on a true story and many of the characters’ names are accurate, but their actions and motives are pure fiction. The ‘Truth or Fiction’ section at the end of the novel tells the true story and includes actual photographs of some of the characters. What kind of books do you usually write? Previously my publications were all to do with my work as a teacher and education consultant. Books to help children with their studies, for parents and for teachers, but I always wanted to write fiction. ‘Young Murder?’ is my first novel.
Do you have any more novels planned? Of course. Following the positive reaction to the young detective Wheatley from ‘Young Murder?’ I have begun his further adventures in Victorian Brighton, provisionally titled ‘Just Wheatley?’ I am also working on a fantasy entitled ‘Arthur’s Women’ based on the Arthurian legend but from the point of view of the women who are so influential in the story but are usually reduced to background characters. See my website http.//barrysilsby.org for more information. “Young Murder?” by Barry Silsby is available from Amazon.

35 Black History Month continues in Brighton with online and live activity…
Black History Month 2020 October 2020 marks the 17th year for Black History Month in Brighton, since a 2003 event at the Old Market, organised by Bert Williams MBE and Sarah Lee from Brighton & Hove Black History.
Like most festivals this year, celebrations this year are moving to online spaces for safety reasons due to coronavirus-19, but don’t expect to see a diminished appetite for enjoyment of this special month. These events are the tip of the iceberg so make sure to check our website for more events and details. Banyan Tree Theatre Group has teamed up with Komedia Sundae Club to share the magic and mystery of East African heritage with a story to inspire and enlighten young minds on Sunday 5 October as an online event. Writing Our Legacy will host its popular Poetry Room (3 Oct), an online event compered by poet Akila Richards featuring poets Jinhao Xie and Neelam Saredia-Brayley, live African music from Gambian master percussionist Musa Mboob, DJ set from DJ Fever2Ray from African Night Fever. The monthly Writers of Colour Social features Eleanor Hope and Sharon Duggal (30 Oct). Supported by Arts Council England. Throughout October, urbanflo creative will produce a physical exhibition at three

different sites in the city plus a virtual exhibition linked to two festivals as part of neXus arts exchange, which is a collaboration between artist Vian Roos in association with Vrystaat Arts Festival (South Africa), Brighton Fringe (UK) and Lagos Fringe Festival (Nigeria). neXus explores our global connectivity and offers a unique platform for artists to connect with each other and to explore new ways of interdisciplinary, intercultural and international collaborative practice. Brighton & Hove BME Heritage Network will continue its Windrush Day celebrations with an event and launch of an online archive, showcasing two years of Windrush activity led by Network members, as part of its Windrush Presence 2020 programme. 37 News from the council…
The phone line is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, with a voicemail function outside of these hours. Environmental enforcement officers can fine anyone found drawing graffiti on public and private land where they don’t have the landowner’s permission. They will issue fixed penalty notices of £150. The council are also working closely with Sussex Police on prosecuting offenders. Residents can also call the hotline to report fly-tipping.
Bus pass times Older person’s bus pass travel time has reverted to the previous hours of 9am to 4am. 24-hour concessionary travel was introduced temporarily during the height of lockdown restrictions to help older people travel earlier in the day. Reverting the hours is designed to reduce the number of older and younger age groups mixing in the busy morning commute time. Those with an older person’s bus pass can still travel on city buses between 9am and 4am on weekdays and all day on weekends and Bank Holidays. The 24-hour travel allowance remains for Brighton & Hove disabled person’s pass holders.
Brighton & Hove City Council is to consult on a plan to reduce the total number of school places across the city by 360 for the academic year starting in September 2022, because of predictions of a large number of surplus places, which could lead to some schools facing financial problems. The Children, Young People and Skills committee agreed on 14th September to a public consultation on proposals to reduce the Published Admission Numbers of nine schools in the city. The Brighton schools affected are: Balfour Primary School (from 120 to 90 pupils); Downs Infant School (from 120 to 90 pupils); Moulsecoomb Primary School (from 60 to 30 pupils); and Stanford Infant School (from 90 to 60 pupils). Consultation on the proposals will run from 5 October to 27 November. Decisions will then be made early in the new year. The consultation will be available on the council’s consultation portal at https://consultations. brighton-hove.gov.uk/

39 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…
One of the last shepherds of Sussex It looks timeless, this portrait of a shepherd with his crook, sheep dog and behind him a herd of Southdown sheep with their young.
Coppard came from a line of shepherds. His father, also called Nelson, was born in 1863 and featured as one of the ‘Shepherds of Sussex’, a series which appeared in the Sussex County Magazine in 1933. In the interview Nelson Coppard senior refers to his father, who had worked as a shepherd in a ‘butcher blue’ smock, corduroy trousers and a white overcoat in bad weather. Nelson junior, born around 1887, is aged about 50 in our photograph. He holds his shepherd’s crook, essential to the work, which was used to catch sheep by the hind leg and lambs by the neck. Crooks were very personal items. They were usually made at a local forge and the shepherd himself would choose and fit the wood (often hazel) for the crook-stick. This photograph (Ref AMS 6734/1) was given to The Keep by a donor whose
GENERAL
In fact the photograph was taken around 1940, and shows Nelson Coppard the younger, shepherd at Court Farm, Patcham. In 1940 Patcham had only recently been absorbed into the Borough of Brighton, the 1930s estate meeting the Downs at Braeside Avenue. The original village, dominated at the centre by church, long barn and farmhouse, had a duck pond, pigeon house and donkey wheel to draw water from the deep well. It had uninterrupted access to the hills and fields to the north and west. Today the A27 divides the village from its original downland roots, and, together with the A23, provides a constant background of traffic noise.
mother lived in Braeside Avenue. The lady befriended Coppard between 1947 and 1952 and got into the habit of taking him tea and cold drinks. On hot days, having a paraffin-operated fridge, she would cool bottles of orange squash in the freezer and take them out to Coppard. The shepherd was mystified by the block of ice in the bottle which was bigger than the neck. Despite receiving a lengthy explanation about fridges, which were still quite rare articles, he would say that he, ‘still didn’t understand how that ice got in there’. www.thekeep.info

Memories of Holy Trinity Church
Brighton Marathon – The Edit
It is part of a project run by Fabrica, a community art space that now lives in Holy Trinity Church. The outcome of the research will be a publication telling the story of the Holy Trinity. We want to hear your memories of Holy Trinity Church and the adjoining Robertson Hall in the years before Fabrica took it over in 1996. Your stories could be featured in the publication and shared on our project blog. Perhaps you or your parents worshipped at the church, or attended special community events? Perhaps you or someone you know came to the church in the period after it was deconsecrated in 1984, but before Fabrica opened its doors in 1996? All types of memories are welcome; we are keen to hear from the local community. Read about our research so far through this site: https://fabricapastpresentfuture.home.blog/ Contact us at pastpresentfuture@fabrica.org.uk or via the Fabrica office - 01273 778646.
The Brighton Marathon team are planning to stage Brighton Marathon Weekend – The Edit on Hove Lawns on Sunday 11th October 2020, a Covid-19 compliant event. Runners will first take part in a 20-mile virtual challenge between 30th September and 11th October. On 11th October they can then complete their marathon on a fast, flat 10k course (6.2 miles) that loops out to Shoreham Port, before weaving back along Hove seafront. They will be running alongside participants of the BM10k. Covid-19 safety measures mean that each participant can only have one spectator. Runners can alternatively choose to complete a full virtual marathon.

43 A spotlight on our local children’s hospice…
Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice Your support… Chestnut Tree House is your local children’s hospice and they care for children and young people with life-shortening conditions in your local community, all of whom are unlikely to reach adulthood. From having a day out exploring Brighton’s vibrant seafront, receiving care in their own homes, to meeting amazing animals, your support means that Chestnut Tree House is always there for families like Zac’s.
“We were given this diagnosis at our 20week scan and we were shortly referred to Chestnut Tree House, our local children’s hospice,” says Dad, Adam. “When I was about 24-weeks pregnant we visited Chestnut Tree House for the first time,” says Mum, Dawn. “You hear the word hospice and you get frightened; you think of a sad and gloomy hospital setting. But it’s not like that, we walked in and it instantly felt like a home away from home, it was amazing. We stayed for dinner, had a swim with the boys, it is such an amazing place. “When Zac was about six months old, we had our first community visit from Chestnut Tree House. It’s our only chance to relax and not to worry; sometimes we go out to the cinema, or for dinner – it’s the only time Adam and I can eat together.” As well as community visits, the family also visit Chestnut Tree House for respite care. “We all stay together at Chestnut

Zac’s Story: Three-year-old Zac was born with Semilobar Holoprosencephaly, an abnormality of brain development in which his brain doesn’t properly divide into the right and left hemispheres, resulting in severe complex needs and a life-shortening condition. Tree House, it’s like a little holiday for us where we can have precious family time. Zac is so happy to visit the House; when we drive there, he knows where he is going and you can see he just gets so excited, he’s so happy when he is there.” One of the family’s favourite things to do at Chestnut Tree House is to visit for the activity days. “We’ve met amazing animals, a bubble-pop man, been to a medieval day, made some furry friends – Zac loves it, the boys love it, and we just love watching them all make amazing memories together.” Get involved: From taking part in a mega cycle challenge, soaring through the skies or volunteering in our charity shops, there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with their local children’s hospice. 49 Infected logs are killing the city’s elms; here’s what we can do to help…
Biggest-ever rise of elm disease This year has seen the biggest-ever rise in elm disease in Brighton and Hove. Tree expert Alister Peters, who is a long-serving member of the council’s tree team, says, ‘It’s been the worst rate of infection in my memory.’ A large number have had to be felled in various streets across the city, especially in our local area, and council staff are struggling to curb the spread of the elm beetle which causes the disease.
GENERAL
A big cause of the problem is infected logs that have come into the city. With the advent of winter and the increase in popularity of log burning stoves, residents are asked, when they buy logs for the winter, to do all they can to ensure the logs are not elm. ‘The best thing is to ask your supplier what type of wood they’re sending,’ says one log supplier. That way householders can do what they can to ensure only elmfree log supplies come into the city. If there is any doubt DO NOT BUY THE LOGS. On average it costs £3,000 to replace a street tree – and it takes an elm several years to reach a leafy maturity. Brighton and Hove houses the national elm collection and some species in the city are world famous, but all the elms are under threat from elm disease. The city would look a very different place without them. It’s good that those of us that buy logs can do Sue Shepherd plantyourpostcode.org something to help.
