4 News from Green councillor Siriol Hugh-Jones…

Councillor News for Preston Park ward... The pandemic has made us all much more aware of nature on our doorsteps and our easy access to the South Downs National Park. The council is currently consulting residents and stakeholders on the City Downland Estate Plan. This will inform the future management and use of the city’s downland estate, 12,800 acres located within the South Downs National Park that the council acquired in the late 19th and early 20th century.

New local business… Made in Shed Looking back, we all reacted differently to that first lockdown. It was warm and sunny, making a huge difference to our headset and levels of activity. My reaction was to build. As lockdown loomed I gathered as many materials as I could lay my hands on. It looked like a long haul ahead and suppliers were closing down daily. Escaping to ‘happy place’ Some years ago I built Shed in our garden in Fiveways. A space to escape from the computer as a jobbing brand and design consultant and just make stuff. I’ve always been a bit of a skip raider and upcycler so spent many happy hours making reclaimed timber assemblages, cutting stencils, creating lamps from found objects and generally tinkering away. It became what is now formally acknowledged as my ‘happy place’. It was a pallet build, lined with a mate’s dismantled shed, insulated and had south-facing salvaged double-glazed doors, so was very snug too. I sold a few pieces, had a couple of a custom hardwood gate and fence, an exhibitions and ‘Made in Shed’ became a indoor treehouse with lovely reclaimed really positive hobby thing. floorboards and a platform double bed Busy = happy with under-stair storage. A new business was born. When lockdown #1 came I threw myself at Shedxtension – a bigger workspace and wood store – made from locally salvaged old decking. Then I threw myself at rebuilding Sea View, the kid’s old tree house with views across the city. My mantra: keep busy = keep happy. Putting in a lot of hours for the duration of lockdown, I was keeping fit and being creative, which fought off the groundhog and kept me sane in the very strange situation we all found ourselves in. I shared photos as I went and then people started asking me if I took commissions. Before I knew it I had designed and made

Happy new business So 2021 sees the official relaunch of Made in Shed with a new website and projects including a garden snug, an adaptable work-from-home bedroom and a garden painting studio – all happy spaces that mean a lot to their owners’ quality of life and wellbeing. And I’m spending less time at the computer, more time covered in sawdust. Couldn’t be happier. Loving the change. Stay well. Simon Bottrell, Head Shedster www.madeinshed.online

Local councillor stands down Tracey Hill, Labour councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward, is standing down from Brighton & Hove City Council for family reasons. Councillor Hill, who was first elected to the council in May 2015, and was re-elected in May 2019, has taken the decision to resign her post in order to move away from the city to take on caring responsibilities. Her time on the council has included stints as Chair of the Planning and Housing Committees, as well as serving on the Licensing Committee.

“I’m really sad to be stepping down early from my councillor role, but family circumstances have made it necessary.” Councillor Hill said: “I’m really sad to be stepping down early from my councillor role, but family circumstances have made it necessary. I’ve enjoyed my time on Brighton & Hove City Council, and I’m glad I was able to serve as part of a Labour administration that did so many positive things for the city. I will miss being a councillor, particularly the residents of Hollingdean and Stanmer, who I feel privileged to have represented. I wish my Labour colleagues all the best for the future and want to thank them and all the officers I’ve worked with for their hard work and dedication.” Labour Group Leader, Councillor Nancy Platts, said: “I am very sorry to lose Tracey from the Labour Group and I personally want to thank her for her tremendous contribution to the Labour Party both as a

member and subsequently as a councillor. She has worked hard for her residents in Hollingdean & Stanmer for over five years and shown huge dedication to her work on committees too. She will be a great loss to the local Labour Party and to the council. We know this has been an incredibly difficult decision and, as usual, Tracey has approached it with honesty and integrity, thinking about what is best for her family and her residents and putting them first. Labour colleagues join me in being sad to see her go and we want to wish her and her family all the very best for the future.” It is not yet known when a by-election will take place.

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News Just days into 2021, we plunged back into lockdown. While the Government instructed secondary schools to move classes online for all but vulnerable children and children of critical workers, primary schools were told to stay open to all. I had emails from worried parents saying it didn’t feel safe to be sending their children to school. They were concerned about the high Covid rates (it had soared 500% in a month in the city), and the new variant being easier to transmit. I was among a group of colleagues that decided to move learning online for most of our primary school children before term started, against Government advice. However, a day into the new term, the Government u-turned, instructing primary schools to close across England. I imagine keeping most children out of school for that one day will have reduced Covid cases but we’ll never know. But it was our responsibility to put measures in place to keep residents safe. However, I’m becoming increasingly concerned that children suffer the effects of lockdown most. The number of under-16s suffering from a probable mental health problem has jumped to 16% since Covid measures were introduced last year. In Brighton and Hove more staff have been recruited to deliver activities to help prevent mental health problems developing in children. And the Schools Wellbeing Service is running on weekdays through lockdown, and parents, carers or professionals worried about a child can call them on: 01273 293481. Another way to keep people safe is by reducing road danger. There was a 70%

drop in car-related injuries during the first lockdown, when there was far less traffic on the road. Choosing to drive less helps create a less threatening environment, nicer for all. It was with this in mind I introduced a proposal, seconded by Labour, to sign the Road Danger Reduction charter. It points to the need to discourage the use of motor traffic when other modes are as viable. Signatories also pledge to design infrastructure that encourages more people to travel in ways that have less potential to cause harm. This complements other plans to encourage people to travel actively while reducing pollution and carbon dioxide emissions. The Hanover Liveable Neighbourhood pilot is one such initiative, designed to cut through traffic and improve air quality. I’ve mentioned this a lot here, so please skip over to my Queen’s Park colleague Clare Rainey’s column, to find out more. Finally, I get a lot of correspondence about communal bins. They are being considered because green bins on pavements can reduce accessibility, a particular concern for people in wheelchairs or pushing buggies. But the decision will be down to residents and a consultation is planned later this year. Meanwhile, if you can bring your bin indoors, please do. Elaine.Hills@brighton-hove.gov.uk

19 News from Hanover Action…

With skylarks ascending over Brighton Racecourse, the lambs bleating at Bevendean farm, spring is in the air; it is time to think greenery, flowers and growing food. With our milder Brighton climate, many plants have been growing throughout winter with just temporary halts of an occasional frost. Following several years of plant swapping, Hanover Action are planning a community plant swap event, whether in person, socially distant or virtual. The plant swap can be for house plants, vegetables, annuals and perennials. It is aimed at a creating a blooming, verdant Hanover. It is not only trees that produce oxygen and reduce pollution but any green plant can make a difference and help the planet. There are some great sources of inspiration and help. Infinity Foods’ Seedy Sunday has been cancelled but seeds are available from their website, especially if you take part in Hanover Action’s Plant Swap (google Seedy Sunday Brighton). The Plant Swap scheme is well advanced in Sheffield (have another google and for Facebook do see the Brighton UK Plant Swap/Sell group). Keep an eye out on the Hanover Action social media outlets for further updates but get growing for 2021… So where to start? If growing for colour, choose nasturtiums, hollyhocks, verbascums and cosmos from seed and they do well in Hanover. Split geraniums, comfrey, hellebores and ferns for plants to swap, and establish in pots to get them ready for swapping.

the pure joy of growing things, just seeing those carrot tops growing in a saucer of water is a marvel. Why not put avocado stones in a pot of compost? 20 years on London avocados are now starting to bear fruit. For houseplants, baby spider plants and ivy shoots will easily take root in a jar of water. Using compostable coffee cups for pots which can go straight into the ground is good for seedlings and bamboo forks and chip forks make good labels and help reduce waste and our dependency on plastic. www.hasl.org.uk

When it comes to growing vegetables from seed, squash, courgettes, pumpkins and tomatoes do well here – they just need a sunny spot. Even in a shady spot, spinach, chard and parsley can grow. For Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

21 News from Green councillor Clare Rainey…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park... While Greens don’t agree with the Government on much, this is music to our ears. Cutting car journeys will mean cleaner air and a cut in atmospheric CO2, a greenhouse gas responsible for climate breakdown. Safer and more pleasant streets will make active travel more pleasurable, so we’ll see healthier and happier residents too. Here in Brighton and Hove, we are doing what we can to make the city a great place to walk and cycle. Pavements have been widened in parts of St James’s Street to make physical distancing easier on narrower stretches. Madeira Drive will soon have a 4-metre-wide protected cycle lane, which will create more space for people walking too, by moving the current cycle path off the pavement.

More changes are afoot in the city to make active travel easier and safer and we’re making sure residents can have their say via a consultation...

via a consultation, which you’ll find on the council’s website. Neighbouring ward Hanover and Elm Grove is introducing the city’s first low traffic neighbourhood which will benefit some Queen’s Park residents. The main purpose of the pilot scheme is to stop traffic cutting through the area’s narrow streets en route to other parts of the city. While emergency vehicles, deliveries and drivers living within the area will have access, the drop in traffic will provide safer spaces for walking, cycling and socialising and for our children, playing out. While the request to the council came from community group Hanover Action, the scheme will benefit the area between Albion Hill and Edward Street too. Modal filters such as planters and bollards will stop traffic cutting through the area. Residents will be involved in making decisions about what they would like to see in their own streets. You can find out more at hanoverandelmgrove.net/home/liveable-neighbourhoods. Such measures should reduce traffic around Carlton Hill and make it easier for pupils at the school to cross.

But changes need to consider those who live, work and run businesses. The previous Labour administration closed Madeira Drive to vehicles following the first Covid Clare Rainey lockdown to give people more outdoor Clare.Rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk space in which to exercise. While many enjoyed this, some thought it was unfair to those who can only access the area by car. Following consultation with residents, businesses and disability groups, the road has since been reopened one way to vehicles. More changes are afoot in the city to make active travel easier and safer and we’re making sure residents can have their say Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps recently said that the Government wants 50% of all journeys in towns and cities to be cycled or walked by 2030.

22 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Hello hello hello! Friends of Queen’s Park (FoQP) recently organised a community Zoom meeting to look at policing in and around the park with Sean Chandler, one of two Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) covering the patch, as its special guest, writes Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. On paper Sean’s degree in creative writing isn’t an obvious grounding for the role of a PCSO apart, perhaps, from equipping him to submit a well-crafted report. More relevant is being Brighton born and bred. He can rightly claim to know his patch thoroughly.

The PCSO role has changed significantly since Sean started his career eight years ago. Originally they were familiar faces on our streets who painstakingly built up relationships with individuals, businesses and groups in their allotted patches. Their presence reassured those who like to see a uniform on the street, but more importantly, the networks and trusted relationships they established enabled them to build up a picture of potential problems before they turned into something more serious. Crime not happening as a result of the subtle interventions of PCSOs is hard to convert into neat pie and bar charts, so after the 2008 crash and austerity cut-backs, PCSOs were low hanging fruit. Culling was drastic and the few officers who remained ended up with huge patches and, inevitably, they became more reactive. There are signs that the original use of PCSOs is slowly returning. For instance, Sean says that once schools re-open he may find himself back in front of pupils of his alma mater, St Luke’s. Engaging with groups such as the FoQP via Zoom and other online platforms offers a cost-effective channel to re-engage the public. Even during last month’s FoQP meeting valuable ‘intel’ was gathered.

One issue, dealers conducting their illicit business around the park, resulted in this advice from Sean. Capture as much information as you can which includes description and car registrations; some people choose to capture images of these incidents which can be sent by email to him or his colleague Katie Harris. However if you do decide to take images, only do so if it’s completely safe and DON’T put the image online as this can compromise it being used later as evidence. It won’t always be possible to reply to each email, but Sean wants to reassure the community that everything brought to a PCSO’s attention gets fed into the system to help build a better picture of where police resources can be effectively targeted and cites a recent bust of one of the country’s largest cannabis farms in Hove which came about in part as result of intelligence shared by the public.

29 Local news…

Brighton Gasworks consultation The site has been allocated for redevelopment in Brighton & Hove City Council’s City Plan. It was in use for gas production from 1818 to 1860 and has since been used for gas storage and distribution. Since 2012 gas has been stored in underground mains, so the two remaining gasholders are no longer in use and only a small part of the site is now needed for operational use. A deputation from AGHAST (Action on Gasworks Housing Affordability, Safety and Transparency) attended a council meeting last October to express their concerns that development of the site risks releasing potent toxins into the atmosphere. The council’s response was that all planning applications must be determined in line with planning legislation and any approval would be subject to stringent conditions to address land contamination, overseen by the Health and Safety Executive.

The masterplan by the developers, St William, is to deliver 600-700 new homes, as well as new jobs through about 2,000m2 of employment space. The masterplan by the developers, St William, is to deliver 600-700 new homes, as well as new jobs through about 2,000m2 of employment space. St William presented their initial proposals last summer. Feedback from the first consultation showed that many people were concerned that the overall scale of the design was too big, particularly the tallest building which was 15 storeys. In

Artist’s impression of the Green Link looking north

response, the designers have reduced the height of the tallest building from 15 storeys to 13. They have also reduced the height of the five-storey block on Boundary Road to four storeys, with the upper storey set back. A “Green Link” is proposed by the developers to provide a pedestrian connection through the site from De Courcel Road and Marine Drive to the junction of Roedean Road and Marina Way. This has been altered so that it is much wider and now enters the site more directly from the north-east. The route will be made up of a continuous chain of green space with pockets of planting, lawn and trees. A new square at the northern end of the site is intended to become a focal point for the local community. St William hope to submit a planning application in spring 2021 and, if they receive planning permission, they aim to start construction in the first half of 2022. For more information and to complete the consultation, visit brightongasworks.co.uk. You can also phone 0203 675 1502 to request a hard copy of the consultation. The deadline for comments is Friday 5 March 2021.

31 Kemptown news from the council…

Duke’s Mound to get a facelift Early work is beginning on reinvigorating Duke’s Mound as part of the Black Rock development. The large non-native plants which are currently overgrown in the area, affecting access and the view of the sea, will be cut back to help create more native plant biodiversity.

Trial removals of some of the tamarisk at Duke’s Mound have already taken place with positive results and details of the full scale of removal are still being decided, likely to take place over a four to six week period. About three-quarters of these non-native bushes are due to be removed as part of this stage of the project, which the council are managing with their partner organisations, Land Use Consultants and EH Treecare.

Indigenous Sussex seeds will be sown in March, using specialist techniques to cope with the steep slopes. Indigenous Sussex seeds will be sown in March, using specialist techniques to cope with the steep slopes. The new habitat will start to emerge progressively over the next few years and will include species such as rampion, mullein and bird’s foot trefoil in addition to local grass species from the Downs. The works form part of the recently approved Black Rock Regeneration Scheme, which will also include widespread beach habitat creation in the area and refurbishment of the Grade II listed buildings on the site, the Temple and Reading Room.

KEMPTOWN

With the ongoing regeneration of the eastern seafront, the council are taking the opportunity to cut back some non-native tamarisk shrubs to allow new native grassland seed to flourish.

Councillor Tom Druitt, Chair of the Black Rock working group, said: “We need to act now to make a real difference and removing the wildly overgrown tamarisk to allow the native species to thrive will bring local grassland habitats back to life. The tamarisk was introduced many years ago and has grown so extensively it has prevented light reaching the ground, limiting all other species and discouraging people from accessing the area - removing them will bring this area back into use for everyone and make it more of a pleasure to visit.” Jon Bannister of Land Use Consultants said: “The area we know as Duke’s Mound will look rather bare for 2021, but once the chalk grassland seed has started to take and to grow through the summer months, we will see the new species beginning to develop into a more colourful and attractive area which will also encourage greater variety of wildlife.”

Unwanted bikes needed... A project which has been supporting women and children fleeing domestic abuse and violence in Brighton & Hove is now looking for the help of local residents.

Free Q&A for business owners

The council’s Access Fund for Sustainable Travel team, working in partnership with Cranks, Sustrans and RISE, has been reconnecting women and children with the joy of cycling by supplying bikes and training to those staying in a city refuge. The project has helped to build confidence and empowerment in both the women and children, as well as supporting them to get around the city and reduce travel costs. The council are now looking for people to donate their unwanted bikes so that they can be reserviced and used to continue the project at the refuge. If you could help, please email lucy.dance@sustrans.org.uk. Among those who have been helped by the project: A mother who was given support to help teach her sixyear-old to ride for the first time.

‘De-risking international trade’, a free virtual session, will be held on Monday 15 March from 1-2pm and is open to all business owners in Brighton & Hove. The event is part of ‘From Brighton with Love,’ a package of support designed to help business owners through EU transition and give them the confidence to embark on international trade. The session is designed to highlight some of the risks and look at ways of mitigating or at least understanding the financial exposure for businesses - a ‘pocket checklist’ of all the issues facing a business when trading internationally.

The scribbled date at the top of this leaflet – 2 Oct 1929 – was probably the day when Evelyn and Sidney Brittain from Northampton were enjoying their complimentary luncheon given by Neville’s company to potential purchasers at the Holborn Hotel in London. A draw for a ‘free gift house’ also took place at the event. Perhaps with retirement in mind, the Brittains made a down payment on a plot in Homebush Avenue and paid £2 a month for the next four years, finally completing the purchase in November 1933. By then the Peacehaven Estates Co had gone into liquidation. Several of the roads were never made up and the plots remained undeveloped. This explains the surprise experienced by walkers at the back of the estate today as they often come across one of the original bungalows, lived in, modernised and well maintained, but seemingly in the middle of nowhere and accessible only by a dirt track! Evelyn and Sidney Brittain eventually decided not to retire to Saltdean but moved to Kettering in Yorkshire. Sidney died in 1974 and Evelyn ten years later. Although they kept all

GENERAL

The land, about 600 acres to the east of Brighton in Piddinghoe and Telscombe, was bought by Charles Neville in 1914. After the First World War it was divided into plots for development by Neville’s South Coast Land and Resort Company and advertised as the ‘Garden City by the Sea’. The leaflet states that ‘plots coloured red are sold’ and that, ‘Almost every site on this plan has a magnificent view over the English Channel. The Estate rises gradually from the front, and the back position has an elevation of almost 400 feet above sea level.’

the papers and advertising material relating to their purchase, we don’t know whether they ever actually came to Saltdean to see their chosen plot of land. Perhaps their dreams of coming to the south coast were, like the developers’ plans, no more than wishful thinking. Nevertheless, archivists at The Keep are grateful to their daughter’s donation of these papers which document interesting developments along the south coast between Brighton and Newhaven in the inter-war years. www.thekeep.info

39 News from Martlets hospice…

Community asked to ‘March for Martlets’ Martlets are asking people in the community to connect with hospice care and get moving during the month of March with their fundraising activity ‘March for Martlets’.

March for Martlets will be the charity’s first event of 2021 and, due to Covid restrictions, people are encouraged to sign up and pledge to raise sponsorship for their own personal walking, running or marching target. Martlets cares for local people across an area of 34 square miles of Sussex, taking in Brighton and Hove, from Portslade in the west to Newhaven in the east. The charity is hoping people will be inspired by that distance, so whether it’s a 3.4km walk per day, 34 times up and down the stairs every morning or 34 miles in total, everyone can make a difference - sign up at www.martlets.org.uk/take-part Over the past 12 months, Martlets’ charity shops have had to close during lockdown and all fundraising events have been cancelled - while the need for hospice care and support is greater than ever. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Martlets has seen a 25% rise in calls to its phone hub, which offers expert advice and support to patients, families, carers and other professionals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In many cases, crisis callers were only one call away from ringing 999. Due to the impact of Covid-19 and social distancing measures, many people with

a terminal illness are having to cope with long periods of isolation. They may also have decided not to go to hospital for treatment or visit their GP as often. This means the team at Martlets are working harder than ever to reach and support many more people with complex needs. Signing up to March for Martlets to raise a donation, no matter how large or small, will help Martlets to keep caring. Martlets Chief Executive Imelda Glackin said: “Working through Covid has felt relentless and support from our community at this time would mean so much to everyone as we need to make sure we can keep on doing what we do as we move forward. We really hope that our community will connect with us again and show they care through ‘March for Martlets.” www.martlets.org.uk

45 News on the latest census coming up in March…

Everyone will benefit from Census 2021... Households across Brighton and Hove will be asked to take part in Census 2021 this spring.

Census outputs inform where billions of pounds of public funding is spent on services like transport, education and health – on cycle routes, schools and dental surgeries. Charities and voluntary organisations often use it as evidence to get funding. It helps businesses to understand their customers and, for example, decide where to open new shops. Plus, those doing research, like university students and people looking into their family history, use census data. It provides important information on population diversity, allowing organisations to know whether they are meeting their responsibilities and triggering action where necessary. Census 2021 will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “The census provides a unique snapshot of our communities,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at ONS, said. “It benefits everyone. Based on the information you give, it ensures millions of pounds are

invested in emergency services, mental health care, school places, hospital beds, houses, roads, GP’s and dentist’s services. “No-one should miss out. Everyone can complete online with a new search-asyou-type ability and paper forms for those who need them.” Census day will be on March 21, but households will soon receive letters with online codes explaining how they can take part. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations. For more information and advice on how to answer the questions, visit census.gov.uk.

GENERAL

The census, run by the Office for National Statistics, is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941. Understanding the needs of the nation helps everyone, from central government to organisations such as councils and health authorities, plan and fund public services.

47 News from the council…

Field officers tackle community concerns Field officers dealt with thousands of cases across the city last year, responding to concerns ranging from noise nuisance to fly-tipping.

bonfires, dust and smoke

illegal street trading

encampments on pavements and in parks

breaches of planning regulations

The Field Officer service was launched in 2018 to take council services out to local communities and tackle issues raised by residents and businesses. Field officers are in action seven days a week until 8pm, providing a fast response to help prevent potential problems escalating. The team work across council services such as planning, environmental health and housing to respond quickly to issues reported by residents through the services’ usual routes. An update on the team’s work was provided in a report to the Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture (TECC) Committee on 14 January. The report says the Covid-19 pandemic has presented challenges, making it difficult for the team to meet residents in person in the same way as they did previously. However, field officers are continuing to work with local people, other council departments and other organisations in the city to get to the root of local concerns and solve problems. Noise triggers the most complaints and prompt action by the team has resulted in 90% of noise investigations being resolved without further complaints. Councillor Steph Powell, joint chair of the TECC Committee, said: “The field officers aim to resolve issues quickly and effec-

tively. With more people at home during lockdown, dealing with noise nuisance and preventing further problems has been particularly important over the last year, and helped to avoid disputes between neighbours. The Covid-19 pandemic means it hasn’t been possible for field officers to get out and about to meet residents at neighbourhood meetings and community events as they did during 2019, but these will be reintroduced as soon as restrictions allow. I’d like to say a heartfelt thanks to all the field officers for all their hard work throughout this most challenging time.” Reporting issues To report a noise problem, visit: brighton-hove.gov.uk/environment/ noise-pollution-and-air-quality/ report-noise-problem Or phone: 01273 294 266 (weekends: 01273 293 541) To report problems such as potholes or fly-tipping, visit: brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/council-and-democracy/ feedback-about-council-services/ report-a-problem

Next step for School Streets

New ‘Street Support’ website

Work began in February to build on the council’s School Streets project at three city primaries.

A new online service providing advice, support and resources for homeless people and rough sleepers has been launched in Brighton & Hove.

New semi-permanent measures are being installed on roads near the entrances to Downs Junior, Brunswick and St Luke’s primary schools in preparation for the full return of children to the classroom, potentially in March. All three schools ran successful School Streets schemes in September 2020 to support the safe return of children to the classroom, thanks to the commitment and dedication of local community volunteers. The School Streets closures aim to improve road safety and air quality outside the city’s schools, as well as enabling physical distancing and promoting sustainable, active travel for school journeys. The success of the scheme to date means that physical measures are now being trialled to determine which model works best to sustain School Streets over the long term. The council are also working with other schools to assess their suitability for School Streets in the future. Residents living on or close to these roads have been sent a letter about the measures, which are being installed on a trial basis through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. Residents, parents and the wider community can also comment and give feedback. There are exemptions to the restrictions, including residents of the street and Blue Badge holders.

The Street Support – Brighton & Hove website (streetsupport.net/brightonand-hove) and smartphone app has been launched by a coalition of faith groups and voluntary sector partners, working with the council and backed by Sussex Police. The aim is that Street Support Brighton & Hove will become a one-stop shop to help people experiencing homelessness and everyone working with them. A street count at the end of January showed there were nine people sleeping rough in the city – the lowest figure since the council have been doing bi-monthly counts. The street outreach team continue working to help everyone sleeping on the streets into safe accommodation. If you’re concerned about anyone sleeping rough, please report it through the Streetlink website (streetlink.org.uk) or call 0300 500 0914. J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

51 A new novel about creating a simpler and kinder society…

“The Line” by Jay Harlow Brighton and Hove resident Jay Harlow has recently published her first novel, ‘The Line’. She tells us more....

But can they turn things around, before it is too late?

WILLOW BRIGHT £9.99

THE LINE Jay Harlow

WILLOWBRIGHT

charity, social group....or if you have any other enquiries. Where is The Line currently available?

From City Books in Hove, The Steyning It’s about a diverse bunch of caring, imaginative, Bookshop, and direct from: ordinary citizens, who unexpectedly get the theline@willowbright.uk chance to take over running the country. How does that happen? Someone with the power to dismiss the government has become as frustrated by all the current crises as the rest of the nation. And she decides it’s time for control to be handed to the people. Is it a political book? It’s about the issues which are really most important to those who are not politicians. Keeping our jobs, homes and sanity. Protecting our loved ones and the world we live in. It’s a unique storyline with an intriguing plot, plus lots of ideas for ways to address isolation, improve our health and happiness - it just needs the right people to put the plans into action. Why did you choose to self-publish? It’s the only way for an author to maintain their own vision of the book and its distribution. I’m keen to support smaller, ethical, independent outlets, rather than the major commercial retailers and websites. So please get in touch if you’d like to earn commission for your shop, blog, website, Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

GENERAL

Why will The Line appeal to Brighton and Hove residents?

England, the 2020s The world is falling apart and someone needs to change it for the better. Who has the power to take up the challenge? No-one is above the law. Except one woman. With a sense of humour and a little help from her friends, she is on a mission to draw a line under the past. And to prove that life can be good again. Politics are out, people are in.

Jay Harlow

At the moment, everyone needs cheering up, a few laughs, and a positive view of a possible future. So it’s a very contemporary book about mutual support, encouragement, and creating a simpler and kinder society, where humanity and nature take precedence over technology and big business. I asked myself, “Who could really change everything? Who is above the law?” The answer came to me and the plot followed from there.

Why did you decide to write this book?

53 Healthy living advice from health coach Siobhan McHenry…

Fuelling your immune system I would like to highlight six steps that are standard to boosting your immunity, within your control and won’t cost you anything. They are tips I regularly direct clients to as viruses are ubiquitous and need a resilient immunity. Our immune system is centred in the gut so there are certain ways to fuel it. 1. Vitamins A, C, D and Zinc - protect against bacterial and viral infections by eating foods rich in these vitamins. I prefer natural sources rather than supplements (unregulated).

Vitamin C - supports the immune system and helps boost absorption of iron from plant sources. Food sources eg red pepper, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, citrus and frozen berries. Vitamin D - acquired in two ways: sun exposure and through food such as eggs, liver, fatty fish (salmon, tuna), butter and some mushrooms. As sun is scarce at the moment, I personally use a liquid supplementation 2000-3000IU - Vitamin D with K2. If Vitamin D is low, there may be an elevated susceptibility to infection. Zinc - has anti-viral, anti-microbial properties that prevent viral replication and help strengthen your innate immune response. Food sources eg cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, cocoa and some shellfish.

4. Sleep - not getting enough dramatically impairs our ability to resist illness. The “rest and digest” state allows your body to repair and prepare. Seven hours + is optimal. 5. Fresh Air - being outdoors has been proven to boost our natural endorphins which then boosts our immunity. Anything from 30 – 60min of fresh air every day will most definitely help. 6. Wash your hands - we all know this now but a good wash with soap, not merely a splash, will wash away unwanted bacteria. There you have it, a six-step approach to fuel and optimise immune functioning, completely in your control! Brought to you by Siobhan @ healthfullives

2. Eat the rainbow - keep inflammation at bay by consuming a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and other sources of fibre like legumes, quinoa, nuts and seeds. 3. Avoid sugar and reduce processed foods - sugar interferes with our production of white blood cells, impairing our immune response. Please be mindful of processed foods as they can contain high levels of sugar when we least expect it. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Vitamin A - in egg yolks, milk and butter, but also beta-carotene, found in squash, carrots and pumpkin, converts to Vitamin A in the body.

55 Simon Baxendale tells us about a computer support charity for which he volunteers…

AbilityNet During the pandemic, Information Technology has never been more important in keeping the more vulnerable folks in our community connected to their family and friends. But what happens when an IT problem crops up?

AbilityNet is a charity offering a totally free service to those most in need of IT support. A team of over 300 skilled volunteer IT specialists, on call, and ready to pick up the phone to talk users through the most trivial of computer tasks, to the highly complex. Backed up by a community of specialists, sponsored by IBM and Microsoft, the team has been taking calls throughout the crisis, keeping people connected, from all backgrounds and abilities. Each volunteer is DBS checked, and in pre-virus days, could offer house visits to help clients with their issues.

Its strapline is “Creating a Digital World Accessible to All” which underpins all the services it offers. For example, here in Brighton and Hove, (not real names), there was Colin, who needed help installing Zoom so he could resume his remote AA meetings. Or Janet, who couldn’t get her bluetooth keyboard working (new battery was supplied). Or Lorraine, whose donated MacBook was unusable, since she had no passwords, or privileged access. So the MacBook was wiped and a new operating system installed with her own ID. Sometimes the work is trivial, other times it takes hours, but the client is re-connected to their network, and the benefit of this is enormous to those amongst us who are isolating and staying safe.

GENERAL

When the tablet, or laptop they use, starts to malfunction? How do they install Zoom, Skype, restore emails, backup documents, or cope with the scam messages that have escalated lately?

AbilityNet was founded over 20 years ago and has grown into an organisation with total UK coverage. Its strapline is “Creating a Digital World Accessible to All” which underpins all the services it offers. The website has a library of webinars and factsheets about how to adapt technology for the disabled, or adjust workplace environments to make life easier. So if you know of someone elderly or disabled, struggling with IT, why not suggest they get in touch with AbilityNet and see if our volunteers can help? It’s totally free, and it may take just minutes to get something up and running again. Digital exclusion is an unintended consequence of the modern connected world we inhabit, but AbilityNet serves to connect the disadvantaged to the resources that many of us take for granted. www.abilitynet.org.uk

61 A new autobiography by a former Brightonian…

My Journey as a Belly Dancer Elizabeth Gordon grew up in Brighton, living in Seaford and Rottingdean. She moved to London where she worked in a solicitors’ office during the day and as a belly dancer by night. She now tells the story in her recently published book “My Journey as a Belly Dancer”. We lived in a house on the cliff in Rottingdean facing the sea with the back garden overlooking the windmill on the Sussex Downs. In my teens I was a mod and visited the coffee houses in the Lanes, where we listened to the latest pop songs on the jukebox. Well-known pop groups visited the Hippodrome and I was lucky enough to get tickets on the front row to see Gerry and the Pacemakers, Roy Orthey had such fond memories of me, but bison and the fabulous Beatles.
